Background and objectiveSince ancient times, honey has been used due to its nutritional and therapeutic value. The role of honey has been acknowledged in the scientific literature however, its use has been controversially discussed and has not been well accepted in modern medicine especially for diabetic patients. This study aimed to investigate the role of honey in diabetic patients.MethodsIn this study, we identified 107 research articles from data based search engines including “PubMed”, “ISI-Web of Science”, “Embase” and “Google Scholar”. The research papers were selected by using the primary key-terms including “Honey”, “Honey bee” and “Diabetes Mellitus”. The research documents in which “Honey” and “Diabetes Mellitus” were debated are included. After screening, we reviewed 66 papers and finally we selected 35 studies which met the inclusion criteria and the remaining documents were excluded.ResultsThis study investigated the preclinical, clinical, human and animal model studies on honey and diabetes mellitus and found that honey decreases the fasting serum glucose, increases the sting C-peptide and 2-h postprandial C-peptide. Although, there is a dearth of data and literature also contrary discussed the use of honey in diabetic patients.ConclusionHoney decreases the fasting serum glucose, increases fasting C-peptide and 2-h postprandial C-peptide. Honey had low glycemic index and peak incremental index in diabetic patients. The use of honey in diabetic patients still has obstacles and challenges and needs more large sample sized, multi-center clinical controlled studies to reach better conclusions.  相似文献

The fifth Clonal Plant Workshop entitled 'Clonal plants and environmental heterogeneity – space, time and scale' was held at the University of Wales, Bangor, from the 9th to the 14th September 1997. The workshops began in 1988, when a small group of plant scientists with different backgrounds met in the Netherlands to discuss plant clonality. This meeting was followed by workshops in 1990, 1992 and 1995 in Sweden, the Czech Republic and Hungary, respectively. The purpose of the Bangor meeting was to continue to integrate knowledge from a wide range of biological disciplines to attempt a better understanding of clonal plants in the context of the heterogeneous environments in which they occur. This special issue is a collection of a number of the presentations at the Bangor workshop. The effects of spatial and temporal environmental heterogeneity on individuals, populations and communities are, of course, diverse, and this collection of papers is not intended to provide a synthesis of the ecological consequences of environmental heterogeneity. Rather, this special issue more accurately reflects progress in various areas of clonal plant research including population dynamics of ramets and genets, mathematical modelling and molecular techniques. We wish to thank all participants of the workshop for their contribution and trust that they found the meeting as stimulating and enjoyable as we did. We are indebted to the authors and the many referees for their friendly cooperation and to Plant Ecology for publishing the proceedings. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the following that made the workshop possible: The British Ecological Society, The Tansley Fund of the New Phytologist Trust, The Countryside Council for Wales, The Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (Bangor) and Skye Instruments Ltd, Wales.  相似文献

There is a considerable body of information regarding bacterially enhanced corrosion, however, this review focuses on diatoms (unicellular algae) whose contribution to biocorrosion is less well studied. The reasons why diatoms have been neglected in studies of biocorrosion in natural waters are discussed and the question whether diatoms should be considered as inert with respect of electrochemical processes is considered. A particular focus is given to the case of stainless steels (SS), which are widely used in variety of applications in natural waters. Basic information on the cell biology of diatoms is included in the review, particularly with respect to their ability to ‘sense’ and adhere to surfaces. Investigations at the nanoscale are reviewed as these studies provide information about the behavior of cells at interfaces. Recent advances include the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM), although only a few studies have been applied to diatoms. Regarding the electrochemical behavior of SS, the mechanisms by which diatoms influence the potential ennoblement process is discussed. Such studies reveal the association of diatoms, in addition to bacteria, with biocorrosion processes.  相似文献

Central venous catheters (CVCs) nowadays constitute critical devices used in medical care, namely in intensive care units. However, CVCs also represent one of the indwelling medical devices with enhanced risk of nosocomial device-related infection. Catheter-related infections (CRIs) are a major cause of patient morbidity and mortality, often justifying premature catheter removal and an increase in costs and use of resources. Adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on the surfaces of indwelling catheters is elemental to the onset of pathogenesis. Seeking the prevention of CVC colonisation and CRI, a variety of approaches have been studied, tested and, in some cases, already applied in clinical practice. This review looks at the current preventive strategies often used to decrease the risk of CRIs due to colonization and biofilm formation on catheter surfaces, as well as at the more recent approaches under investigation.  相似文献

The genus Bacillus includes a great diversity of industrially important strains, including Bacillus atrophaeus (formerly Bacillus subtilis var. niger). This spore-forming bacterium has been established as industrial bacteria in the production of biological indicators for sterilization, in studies of biodefense and astrobiology methods as well as disinfection agents, in treatment evaluation and as potential adjuvants or vehicles for vaccines, among other applications. This review covers an overview of the fundamental aspects of the B. atrophaeus that have been studied to date. Although the emphasis is placed on recent findings, basic information’s such as multicellularity and growth characteristics, spore structure and lifecycle are described. The wide biotechnological application of B. atrophaeus spores, including vegetative cells, is briefly demonstrated, highlighting their use as a biological indicator of sterilization or disinfection.  相似文献

In many large-scale conservation or ecological problems where experiments are intractable or unethical, regression methods are used to attempt to gauge the impact of a set of nominally independent variables (X) upon a dependent variable (Y). Workers often want to assert that a given X has a major influence on Y, and so, by using this indirection to infer a probable causal relationship. There are two difficulties apart from the demonstrability issue itself: (1) multiple regression is plagued by collinear relationships in X; and (2) any regression is designed to produce a function that in some way minimizes the overall difference between the observed and predicted Ys, which does not necessarily equate to determining probable influence in a multivariate setting. Problem (1) may be explored by comparing two avenues, one in which a single best regression model is sought and the other where all possible regression models are considered contemporaneously. It is suggested that if the two approaches do not agree upon which of the independent variables are likely to be significant, then the deductions must be subject to doubt.  相似文献

Background

The goal of Roll Back Malaria (RBM) is to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality by 50% by the year 2010, and still further thereafter until the disease becomes no more a threat to public health. To contribute to the monitoring and evaluation process of this goal, two surveys were carried out in 2000 and 2003 in households and health facilities in the Kassena-Nankana district, northern Ghana using the RBM-WHO/AFRO monitoring and evaluation tools for malaria control activities.

Methods

Data were collected from mothers/caretakers on signs/symptoms of the most recent malaria attack for their under five year old children; the management actions that they took and their perception of health services provided at the health facilities, bednet use, antenatal attendance and place of delivery for the most recent pregnancy, malaria prophylaxis during their last pregnancy. Community health workers and herbalist/traditional healers were also interviewed about the types of health services they provide to community members.

Results

The results revealed a significant improvement in knowledge among mothers/caretakers over the three-year period; this affected caretakers' initial management of illnesses of their young children. The management in terms of the type and dosage of drugs used also improved significantly (p < 0.0001) over the period. Reported insecticide-treated bed net use among children under-five years and pregnant women significantly increased between 2000 and 2003 (p < 0.0001). Health professionals had improved on adoption of their quality of care roles. The intensification of malaria control activities and awareness creation in this district over a three year period had started demonstrating positive results towards reducing malaria disease burden.

Conclusion

Periodic performance assessments through surveys as described and prompt feedback of results to stakeholders in the locality serves as a catalyst to improving malaria control in malaria-endemic countries.  相似文献

Stem cell research holds a promise to treat and prevent age-related degenerative changes in humans. Literature is replete with studies showing that stem cell function declines with aging, especially in highly proliferative tissues/organs. Among others, telomerase and telomere damage is one of the intrinsic physical instigators that drive age-related degenerative changes. In this review we provide brief overview of telomerase-deficient aging affects in diverse stem cells populations. Furthermore, potential disease phenotypes associated with telomerase dysregulation in a specific stem cell population is also discussed in this review. Additionally, the role of telomerase in stem cell driven cancer is also briefly touched upon.  相似文献

PDZ domains are small globular building blocks that are amongst the most abundant protein interaction domains in organisms. Over the past several years an avalanche of data has implicated these modules in the clustering, targeting and routing of associating proteins. An overview is given of the types of interactions displayed by PDZ domains and how this relates to the current knowledge on their spatial structure. Furthermore, the different levels on which PDZ – ligand binding can be regulated and the consequences of PDZ domain-mediated clustering for activity, routing and targeting of interacting proteins will be addressed. Finally, some cell and animal models that illustrate the impact of PDZ domain-containing proteins on (multi-) cellular processes will be discussed.  相似文献

Lipid oxidation is a common metabolic reaction in all biological systems, appearing in developmentally regulated processes and as response to abiotic and biotic stresses. Products derived from lipid oxidation processes are collectively named oxylipins. Initial lipid oxidation may either occur by chemical reactions or is derived from the action of enzymes. In plants this reaction is mainly catalyzed by lipoxygenase (LOXs) enzymes and during recent years analysis of different plant LOXs revealed insights into their enzyme mechanism. This review aims at giving an overview of concepts explaining the catalytic mechanism of LOXs as well as the different regio- and stereo-specificities of these enzymes.  相似文献

Aspergillus is a fungal genus comprising several hundred species, many of which can damage the health of plants, animals and humans by direct infection and/or due to the production of toxic secondary metabolites known as mycotoxins. Aspergillus-specific antibodies have been generated against polypeptides, polysaccharides and secondary metabolites found in the cell wall or secretions, and these can be used to detect and monitor infections or to quantify mycotoxin contamination in food and feed. However, most Aspergillus-specific antibodies are generated against heterogeneous antigen preparations and the specific target remains unknown. Target identification is important because this can help to characterize fungal morphology, confirm host penetration by opportunistic pathogens, detect specific disease-related biomarkers, identify new candidate targets for antifungal drug design, and qualify antibodies for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. In this review, we discuss how antibodies are raised against heterogeneous Aspergillus antigen preparations and how they can be characterized, focusing on strategies to identify their specific antigens and epitopes. We also discuss the therapeutic, diagnostic and biotechnological applications of Aspergillus-specific antibodies.  相似文献

Last summer we officially launched the Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine, published by BioMedCentral, with the aim of establishing a serious, peer-reviewed, open-access online journal that focuses on the multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary fields of ethnobiology and ethnomedicine, drawing on approaches and methods from both the social and biological sciences. The strong start vindicates the widely held belief that the journal responds to a real need within the research community. The success of the journal has been most gratifying. The steady influx of submissions of high scientific standards illustrates the strong demand for a dynamic, proactive, and open-minded scientific journal in these research areas. Our aim has been to dedicate JEE to the "scientific communities" worldwide, particularly those in the developing countries.  相似文献

Abstract

The formation of complex species in the dimethyltin(IV) and trimethyltin(IV)-carboxymethyl-L-cysteinate (carbocysteinate) systems in NaClaq, at different ionic strengths, and in a multicomponent Na+, K+, Ca2+ ,Mg2+, Cl? and SO42-? medium representative of the seawater major composition, is discussed. Experimental results give evidence for the formation of the following species (L = carbocysteinate): [(CH3)2Sn(L)]0, [(CH3)2Sn(HL)]+, [(CH3)2Sn(OH)(L)]?, [(CH3)2Sn(OH)2(L)]2? in the DMT–CCYS system, and [(CH3)3Sn(HL)]0, [(CH3)3Sn(L)]? and [(CH3)3Sn(OH)(L)]2? in the TMT-CCYS system. The ionic strength dependence of formation constants was taken into account by an extended Debye Hückel type equation and by the SIT (Specific ion Interaction Theory). Measurements were carried out also on the dimethyltin(IV)-glutamate and trimethyltin(IV)-glutamate systems in NaClaq, owing the strict similarity of glutamate and carbocysteinate. Results obtained show the formation of complex species having the same stoichiometry as those formed in the DMT- and TMT-carbocysteinate systems, with very similar stability, confirming that carbocysteinate behaves as a dicarboxylic amino acid without involving the sulfur-bridge potential binding site in metal coordination.  相似文献
