The Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima, an Arctic shorebird, displays unusual sex roles during breeding. In a 5-year study in Svalbard, in the Norwegian high Arctic, data were collected on the roles of the sexes in this species. Purple Sandpipers were similar to most shorebirds in that males actively courted females, established territories and vigorously defended their territories from intruders. Both sexes shared incubation duties approximately equally over the entire 21-day incubation period. Males incubated very little initially, but increased their effort significantly during the first 11 days of incubation to over 50% of the time from days 11–21. However, Purple Sandpipers contrasted with most other shorebird species in that females discontinued their breeding efforts at hatching. In nearly all cases, broods were attended solely by the male until the chicks reached fledging age (or even longer). Nonetheless, the pair bond must be described as monogamous because neither males nor females were found to re-mate or lay a second clutch during a season. This pattern of parental care, which is found only in very few other shorebird species, is discussed in an evolutionary context.

The masses of 3229 Purple Sandpipers Calidris maritima from Britain were analysed for differences related to age, season and size. First-year birds were lighter by 2 g. There was only a slight increase in mass in mid-winter, in contrast to other waders wintering in Britain, suggesting that Purple Sandpipers are less at risk to cold weather and food shortages. Their winter fat reserves were low but their breast muscles were relatively larger than other small waders wintering in Britain. Their plumage was slightly heavier and their breast and belly feathers were longer. There was a large increase in mass in May by first-year and adult birds prior to migration. The 'long-billed' population showed a greater relative increase in May, compared with the 'short-billed' population, perhaps reflecting different migration distances.

Summary The hypothesis that intense predation, variable food availability, and increased social interactions in high density populations have been important factors promoting the evolution of polygynous and promiscuous mating systems in certain Calidridine sandpipers (Holmes and Pitelka, 1966) is examined in breeding populations of the Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri) in subarctic Alaska.Western Sandpipers breed in a habitat consisting of a complex mosaic of wet low-lying marshes and relatively well-drained, heath-covered tundra. They defend small territories and nest on the latter, while some feeding also occurs there. Most foods however are obtained off territory in the wet marshes and along the shores of lakes, rivers and sloughs.Densities in the nesting areas ranged from 132–196 pairs/40 ha at the base of a low range of hills to 200–300/40 ha on hummocks surrounded completely by marsh. These densities, the highest reported for a Calidridine sandpiper, are relatively constant from year to year. The mating system of the Western Sandpiper is monogamous, both sexes incubate and care for young. Correlated with a strong single pair-bond and stable populations is a strong tendency to return to the same site. Of sandpipers marked, an average of 57.6% of males and 48.8% of females returned in succeeding years, frequently to the same territory or its immediate vicinity. Of the pairs returning to the study area in subsequent years, 61.5% reunited. The restriction of nesting activities to heath tundra is considered to be a result of the protection it provides for nests. With the separation of nesting and feeding areas and with relatively abundant food sources that are not significantly affected by weather, a large nesting area is not required, allowing high densities of Western Sandpipers to occupy the patches of heath-covered tundra. In this ecological context, the high intensity of social interactions has not resulted in the evolution of a nonmonogamous mating system. Indeed, the increased protection afforded offspring by the presence of both parents is probably the most important selective force promoting the evolution of the monogamous mating pattern in Western Sandpipers.

Several plant-herbivore hypotheses are based on the assumption that plants cannot simultaneously allocate resources to growth and defence. We studied seasonal patterns in allocation to growth and putatively defensive compounds by monitoring several chemical and physical traits in the leaves of mountain birch from early June (budburst) to late September (leaf senescence). We found significant seasonal changes in all measured characteristics, both in terms of concentrations (mg g-1) and amounts (mg leaf-1). Changes were very rapid in the spring, slow in the middle of the season, and there was another period of fast changes in the senescing leaves. Co-occurring changes in physical leaf traits and concentrations of several compounds indicated a seasonal decline in foliage suitability for herbivores. Concentrations of protein and free amino acids declined through the growing season whereas individual sugars showed variable seasonal patterns. The seasonal trends of phenolic groups differed drastically: concentrations of soluble proanthocyanidins increased through the season, whereas cell wall-bound proanthocyanidins, gallotannins and flavonoid glycosides declined after an initial increase in young leaves. We failed to find proof that the seasonal accumulation of phenolics would have been seriously compromised by leaf or shoot growth, as assumed by the growth/differentiation balance hypothesis and the protein competition model hypothesis. On the contrary, there was a steady increase in the total amount of phenolics per leaf even during the most active leaf growth.

A knowledge of the seasonal variation in births and deaths during normal years is important for analyses of the effects of wars, famines, epidemics or similar privations on these two variables. In studies of seasonality, multiple trigonometric regression models are more flexible than the simple sine curve. The seasonal variation in mortality in Iceland, 1856-1990, shows a strong secular decrease, and a connection between this and the epidemiological transition is considered. As a consequence of the severe famine in Finland in 1867-68, the mortality for the whole year 1868 was almost four times as high as during normal years, and the seasonality of the mortality was even more accentuated. The birth rate in Finland during 1868 was about 70 percent of that during normal years and showed an aberrant seasonality, with a strong trough from October 1868 to February 1869 (fewer conceptions between January and May 1868, when the food shortage was severe).

For most organisms, both within‐year (i.e. seasonal) and between‐year variations in demography are important components in shaping the population dynamic patterns observed on a multiannual scale. These two sources of variation have, however, rarely been studied simultaneously. Most of the recent work on small rodent population dynamics, for example, has focused on between‐year variation. Densities of seed‐ and fruit‐eating rodents, such as the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus), are in particular known to have between‐year variation related to seed crop production. Here we report on the analysis of a long‐term (1976–1982) capture‐mark‐recapture (CMR) study of the bank vole in Belgium. The study was done on two grids, an open and a fenced grid. As part of the CMR statistical analysis, we propose a general modelling approach which allows for a detailed understanding of the relative importance of seasonal and between‐year variation in survival. We demonstrate that most of the seasonal variation corresponds to a lower apparent survival in spring compared to the rest of the year. During winter, apparent survival was lower on the open grid than on the fenced grid. Dispersal is therefore concluded to be an important determinant of the seasonal pattern. The between‐year variation in survival is largely attributable to variation in seed crops, and is comparable in magnitude to the seasonal variation.

Purple Sandpipers wintering on the Kincardine coast had a protracted autumn arrival (one-quarter and three-quarters of the birds arrived on 30 July and 21 October respectively, 83 days) but a faster spring departure (one-quarter and three-quarters departed on 9 April and 27 May respectively, 48 days). The long arrival period was partly due to differences in the migration phenology of the two main wintering populations: short-billed birds from Norway arrived before the long-billed birds, probably from Canada. There was a smaller difference in departure times of the two populations: short-billed birds left before the long-billed birds. Minimum annual survival was estimated from resightings of 92 marked birds. There was no evidence that survival differed between adults and first-years or between birds of different bill-size classes, which were of different sex and geographical origin. Minimum annual survival was estimated to be 79.5%(se = 2.8%). The similarity between the mortality rate (20.5%) and the percentage of first-year birds in populations of Purple Sandpipers probably reflects balanced population dynamics.

A quantitative method was developed to describe Lophodermium (Rhytismataceae, Ascomycetes) populations on Pinus thunbergii needle litter, and seasonal patterns of population variation were examined based on this method. We focused on the formation
of black zone lines across needles and the production of Lophodermium ascocarps on needle portions delimitated by zone lines. The study was carried out at a soil erosion control site on a mountain
slope and at a coastal sand dune site. Most Lophodermium spp. on needle litter were identified as L. pinastri according to morphological characteristics of ascocarps and ascospores and DNA analysis. Zone lines were produced on needles
when isolates of L. pinastri were in contact with other isolates of L. pinastri or with isolates of other species in dual culture tests. This observation provided a rationale to consider that individual
colonies with ascocarps and delimitated by zone lines were occupied by a single Lophodermium isolate. Frequency of occurrence of Lophodermium colonies, total colony length, and mean colony number per needle were higher at the coastal sand dune site than at the soil
erosion control site. Total colony length and mean colony number also varied with season. Mean colony length and mean ascocarp
number per colony were not different between sites or seasons.

Summary The filamentous chlorophyte Spirogyra forms a mat covering extensive areas of Spirogyra Lake, a small, shallow, Antarctic lake. It has an annual growth pattern, with a maximum standing crop of 400 g chlorophyll- m-2 during the ice-free summer period. Nutrient concentrations were low and there was evidence for P-limitation. The attainment of such a high standing crop was probably dependent on the lake's high specific dilution rate. Radiation flux was very low under winter ice cover and Spirogyra died back almost completely. The lake water became hypoxic and inorganic nutrients accumulated in both the water column and overwintering algal filaments. Spore formation was not observed, but changes in the composition of filaments indicated that polysaccharides, which had accumulated in summer, were depleted over the long, ice-covered winter period.

Serum corticosterone was previously studied in numerous elasmobranch fishes (sharks, skates and rays), but the role of this steroid, widespread throughout many taxa, has yet to be defined. The goal of this study was to test whether corticosterone varied in response to acute and chronic capture stress, and across the reproductive cycle in the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, and Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina. Serum corticosterone in S. tiburo increased following capture and again 24 h post-capture, possibly caused by interference with 1α-hydroxycorticosterone, the primary stress hormone in elasmobranchs. Higher serum concentrations in males compared to females were observed in both species. Variations in corticosterone also occurred during the reproductive cycle in both species. Consistent with other taxa, elevations in male bonnethead sharks and stingrays coincided with peak testicular development and mating. Elevations in female bonnethead sharks occurred from the time of mating through sperm storage into early gestation. In contrast, corticosterone levels in female stingrays were low during their protracted mating season, but elevated through late gestation and parturition. These results indicate that corticosterone has a limited role, if any, in acute and chronic stress associated with capture in S. tiburo, but likely has physiological functions associated with its glucocorticoid properties across the reproductive cycle of both species.

Aggressive behaviours and correlates of dominance in Purple Sandpipers Calidris maritima at a communal winter roost
Aggression and the competitive ability of individual Purple Sandpipers were studied at a communal winter roost in northeast England. Aggression was most intense in high winds and more frequent in moderate breezes than when wind speeds were high or low. Higher wind speeds resulted in a drop in aggression rate, as birds had to face into the wind to maintain their balance. The ability of an individual to secure a sheltered roost position was related to its size and sex, larger individuals being dominant over those smaller than themselves. Purple Sandpipers exhibit reversed sexual size dimorphism and females were thus dominant over males. There was also weak evidence that adults were dominant over first-winter birds. The importance of size and sex in determining dominance at the roost is discussed in relation to the evolution of reversed sexual size dimorphism in Purple Sandpipers and similar shorebirds.

We show that in a long-distance migrant shorebird species with outspoken seasonal changes in body mass and composition, the red knot Calidris canutus , the ratio between the masses of the small flight muscle ( musculus supracoracoideus , powering twists and active upstrokes of the wings) and the larger flight muscle ( musculus pectoralis , for the downstrokes) is far from constant. During an annual cycle the supracoracoideus / pectoralis ratio varied more than twofold between values of 0.058 (±0.005 SE) in early winter period and of 0.124 (±0.05 SE) on the High Arctic tundra breeding grounds. The ratios thus spanned a range from those typical of soaring raptors and seabirds to those of fast and agile fliers and birds with rapid take-offs. The overall average ratio was 0.102 (±0.001 SE, for non-starved knots, and 0.103±0.001 including starved knots) and did not differ between males and females. As predicted from the known functions of supracoracoideus and pectoralis , the ratio was a negative function of body mass. However, after arrival on the breeding grounds (0.124) and during winter starvation (0.135) particularly high ratios were reached: these may be times when wing-manoeuvrability (in flight display and during the evasive 'rodent run' away from predators at the nest) and an ability for rapid take-off and active up-strokes (from –near– the nest, and in times of depletion of flight muscle mass during winter starvation) may be at premium. The particularly low ratio of 0.06 in early winter is puzzling. Many aspects of avian phenotypes have recently been shown to be intraindividually variable. To a twofold seasonal variation in flight muscle mass ( Dietz et al. 2007 ), we can now add the twofold variation in the ratio between the muscles for the upstroke and the downstroke.

Positional behavior in adult red colobus monkeys (Colobus badius) was examined in a variety of ecological contexts. Using a focal-animal methodology, we assessed how data collected by different observers, in different years, in different seasons, and in different forests affected estimates of positional behavior. In all, 23,000 bouts were recorded. Variation in frequency is greatest in the common behaviors, especially arboreal quadrupedalism. Significant behavioral differences occur more often in the context of different forests than in annual or seasonal comparisons. The activity of feeding exhibits the largest frequency changes across positional behavior and ecological context. In all, red colobus monkeys exhibit substantial amounts of flexibility in positional behavior across different ecological contexts.

Seasonal and vertical variations of the main microbial communities (heterotrophic bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton, auto- and heterotrophic nanoflagellates, ciliated protozoa and microalgae) and auto- and heterotrophic activities were estimated in a brown-colored humic and moderately acid lake in central France, the lake of Vassivière. The results demonstrated the dominant role of light in the vertical distribution of autotrophic and mixotrophic microorganisms which are confined to the 0–5 m layer during thermal stratification. The bacterial biomass was high throughout the water column probably because of the great availability of dissolved organic matter. Consequently, the predatory microzooplankton and particularly the various trophic groups of ciliated protozoa, were distributed in the water column according to the vertical distribution of the particular food resources (detritus, bacteria, algae). However, despite the great abundance of algae and bacteria, biomass of flagellated and ciliated protozoa was relatively weak. Most of the phytoplanktonic biomass was filamentous (Diatoms) or colonial (Cyanobacteria) and therefore almost probably difficult to ingest for algivorous microzooplankton. Regarding the low abundance of bacterivorous protozoa, the relation with the special physicochemical properties of this lake is discussed.
