The daily dietary intake of nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) by 42 young children, 21 boys and 21 girls, from 4 to 7 years of age, living in urban and rural areas of Germany and having different food consumption behaviour, was determined by the duplicate method with a 7-day sampling period. Dietary records were also kept by the children's parents for the 7-day sampling period. Individual reported food items were identified, assigned to food groups and, together with known Ni and Zn concentrations of foodstuffs, daily intake rates were calculated. The same method was used for calculations of the energy, fat, protein and carbohydrate intake rates.The levels in the food duplicates, determined by atomic absorption spectrometry, were in the range of 69–2000 μg Ni/kgdry weight (geometric mean (GM): 348) and 7.1–43 mg Zn/kgdry weight (GM: 17.5). Daily intake rates based on the 294 individual food duplicate analyses were 12–560 μg Ni/d (GM: 92.3) and 1.5–11 mg Zn/d (GM: 4.63). The results from the dietary records were 35–1050 μg Ni/d (GM: 123) and 1.7–15 mg Zn/d (GM: 5.35).The results of the daily intake rates from both methods showed a correlation with regard to Zn (r=0.56), but no correlation was found between either the Ni intake rates determined with both methods or between the Ni intake rates measured by the duplicate method and calculated intake rates from the dietary records of energy, fat, protein, carbohydrates or drinking water. In the case of nickel, the discrepancies between the methods lead one to suppose that the main factors influencing Ni intake by food are not directly caused by easily assessable food ingredients themselves. It is possible that other factors, such as contaminated drinking water or the transition of Ni from kettles or other household utensils made from stainless steel into the food, may be more relevant. In addition there are some foodstuffs with great variations in concentrations, often influenced by the growing area and environmental factors. Further, some food groups naturally high in Nickel like nuts, cocoa or teas might not have been kept sufficient within the records. In summary, the dietary record method gave sufficient results for Zn, but is insufficient for Ni.Based on the food duplicate analysis, children living in urban areas with consumption of food products from a family-owned garden or the surrounding area and/or products from domestic animals of the surrounding area had about one-third higher Ni levels in their food than children either living in an urban area or children consuming products exclusively from the supermarket. Only slight differences were found with regard to Zn.Compared to the recommendations of the German Society of Nutrition (DGE) (25–30 μg Ni/d and 5.0 mg Zn/d), the participants of the study had a clearly increased Ni and, in view of the geometric mean value, a nearly adequate Zn intake. Health risks are especially given with regard to the influence of nickel intake by food on dermatitis for nickel-sensitive individuals. 相似文献

The ratios of 15N to 14N and 13C to 12C tend to be higher in marine than in terrestrial organisms. The concentrations of these isotopes in human bone collagen consequently can be used to make inferences about the contribution of marine and terrestrial resources to prehistoric diets. The utility of studying 15N/14N and 13C/12C ratios in conjunction with each other is illustrated by our analysis of 40 human burials from archaeological sites in the Santa Barbara Channel area of southern California. The mean delta 13C and delta 15N values (in per mil) of collagen from these skeletons decrease progressively from the Channel Islands (delta 13C = -14.0, delta 15N = +16.3) to the mainland coast (delta 13C = -14.5, delta 15N = +14.9) to the interior (delta 13C = -17.2, delta 15N = +10.9). These data suggest that Indians living on the Channel Islands during the late prehistoric period were heavily dependent on marine resources. The inhabitants of the mainland interior, in contrast, had a diet composed largely of terrestrial foods. From their isotope ratios, it appears that the Indians who lived on the mainland coast consumed a mixed diet containing substantial quantities of both marine and terrestrial resources. Differences in 15N/14N and 13C/12C ratios of individuals from mainland sites dating from the early and late prehistoric periods show that the marine component of the diet increased substantially through time. These isotopic data are consistent with pathological, faunal, and artifactual evidence of increased marine resource exploitation during the late prehistoric period. 相似文献

This study was designed to examine the effects of alterations in dietary carbohydrate (CHO) intake on the performance of high-intensity exercise lasting approximately 10 min (EXP 1) and 30 min (EXP 2). Trained subjects exercised to exhaustion on four occasions on a cycle ergometer at 90% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max; EXP 1, n = 5) and 80% of VO2max (EXP 2, n = 7). The first two tests were familiarisation trials and were carried out following the subjects' normal diet. Normal training was continued but standardised during the periods of dietary control. The subsequent two tests were performed 2 weeks apart after 7 days of dietary manipulation. The two diets were a 70% and a 40% CHO diet, isoenergetic with each subject's normal diet and administered in a randomised order. At both exercise intensities, time to exhaustion following the high CHO and low CHO diets was not different [mean (SD) EXP 1: 11.56 (3.78) min and 8.95 (2.35) min, P = 0.22; EXP 2: 26.9 (7.4) min and 26.5 (6.5) min, P = 0.90]. No differences in resting blood metabolite concentrations were found apart from a lower beta-hydroxybutyrate (beta-HB) level following the high CHO diet in EXP 2. Blood lactate was higher after exercise at 90% of VO2max following the high CHO diet. Blood lactate was higher, and beta-HB lower during exercise at 80% of VO2max following the high CHO diet. No differences were found in the other blood metabolites tested. The respiratory exchange ratio after 15 min of exercise at 80% of VO2max was higher on the high CHO diet. No differences in oxygen uptake, heart rate (EXP 2) or ratings of perceived exertion (both experiments) were found between conditions. These results indicate that moderate changes in diet composition during training do not affect the performance of high-intensity exercise in trained individuals when the total energy intake is moderately high. 相似文献

Numerous studies have shown that zinc nutrition influences the growth of several types of tumor. However, the influence of zinc nutrition on mammary tumorigenesis is not known. To study the effects of dietary zinc intake on N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced mammary tumorigenesis, female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed an egg-white-based diet providing 3 (Z3), 12 (Z12), or 31 (Z31) mg zinc/kg diet ad libitum. In addition, two pair-fed controls, PFZ12 and PFZ31, were also included. Fourteen weeks after MNU injection, cumulative tumor incidence and total number of tumors were lower in Z3 rats than in Z12 and Z31 rats. Cumulative tumor incidence and total number of tumors were lower in Z3 rats than in PFZ12 rats, but were the same as in PFZ31 rats. Cumulative tumor incidence and total number of tumors were also lower in pair-fed controls than in their corresponding ad libitum controls, but were the same between the ad libitum controls. Overall, the results showed that the effect of marginal zinc deficiency on MNU-induced mammary tumorigenesis in rats was primarily the result of a reduced feed intake associated with marginal zinc deficiency rather than zinc per se. 相似文献

There is a need for a tool to assess dietary intake related to the habitual dietary glycaemic index (GI) and fibre in groups with large numbers of individuals. Novel metabolite-profiling techniques may be a useful approach when applied to human urine. In a long-term, controlled dietary intervention study, metabolomics were applied to assess dietary patterns. A targeted approach was used to evaluate the effects on urinary C-peptide excretion caused by the dietary treatments. Seventy-seven overweight subjects followed an 8-week low-calorie diet (LCD) and were then randomly assigned to a high-GI or low-GI diet for 6 month during which they completed 24-h urine collections at baseline (prior to the 8-week LCD) and after randomisation to the dietary intervention, at month 1, 3 and 6, respectively. Metabolite profiling in 24-h urine was performed by 1H NMR and chemometrics. Partial least squares (PLS) analysis indicated that urinary formate could discriminate between high-GI and low-GI diets (correlation coefficient r = 0.82), and this finding was confirmed statistically (P = 0.01). PLS analysis also indicated that urinary hippurate could be associated with fibre intake, but this finding was not confirmed statistically. No associations between GI and urinary C-peptide were found. Our results emphasise that application of metabolomics is useful in the assessment of dietary exposure related to dietary GI and fibre seen at group level in a nutritional metabolomic study of human urine. As our design allowed for large variations in individually selected food items, biomarkers identified at group level may be interpreted as more general and robust markers, largely not confounded with markers from single dietary factors. 相似文献

The variation in dietary exposure to acrylamide (AA) has been studied through measurement of hemoglobin adduct levels from AA, as a measurement of internal dose, in a sample from the blood bank of the Malmö Diet and Cancer Cohort (n = 28,098). The blood donors are well characterised with regard to their food habits, and 142 individuals were selected to obtain highest possible variation in the adduct levels from AA (none, random or high intake of coffee, fried potato, crisp bread and snacks, food items estimated to have high levels of AA).Among 70 non-smokers the AA-adduct levels varied by a factor of 5, and ranged between 0.02 and 0.1 nmol/g, with considerable overlap in AA-adduct levels between the different dietary groups. There was a significant difference between men with high dietary exposure to AA compared to men with low dietary exposure (P = 0.04). No such difference was found for women. As expected a higher level (range: 0.03–0.43 nmol/g) of the AA-adduct, due to AA in tobacco smoke, was found in smokers. Smoking women with high dietary exposure to AA had significantly higher AA-adduct levels compared to smoking women with low dietary exposure (P = 0.01). No such significant difference was found in smoking men. The median hemoglobin (Hb) adduct level in the randomly selected group of non-smokers was compatible with earlier studies (0.031 nmol/g).The variation in the average internal dose, measured as Hb adducts, was somewhat smaller than estimated for daily intake by food consumption questionnaires in other studies. Thus, the observed relatively narrow inter-individual variation in AA-adduct levels means that estimates of individual dietary AA intake have to be very precise if they should be useful in future cancer epidemiology. 相似文献

Summary Populus tremuloides, a clonal angiosperm, is a major food item for many temperate-region herbivores. Clonal variation in chemical composition has potentially important implications for vertebrate herbivores because a single clone may be areally large and hence, may comprise a large part of available forage. The objectives of this study were: (1) to examine spatial variability in nutrient concentrations and quality within and among 24 clones of trembling aspen, and (2) to evaluate these differences with respect to cervid nutritional requirements; notably Cervus elaphus and Odocoileus hemionus. Between-clone concentrations of all chemical components were significantly different. In terms of cervid nutrition, most clones provided adequate concentrations of Ca, Mg, Mn, and Zn. Crude protein was limiting in some clones and P in most. Additionally, P metabolism may be impaired by the high Ca:P ratios typical of some clones. Of the structural constituents, neutral detergent fiber showed the greatest intraclonal variability. Dry-matter digestibility varied sufficiently to conjecture that cervid energy balances may be affected. Overall, although clone-to-clone differences were not so substantial to conclude that selective browsing would be nutritionally cost-effective, it is proposed that cervids stand to benefit by fortuitously browsing on nutritionally superior clones owing to the multiplier effect. 相似文献

Summary We examined within- and between-group differences in aspects of feeding and nutrient intake among adult females of a single
population of baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. Differences in time spent feeding, daily energy and protein intake and feeding efficiency
(nutrient intake per minute spent feeding) reflected differences in resource base, reproductive condition and parity. Baboons
that partially fed from a lodge garbage dump spent less than half the time feeding than those that were feeding totally in
the wild. During this greatly reduced feeding time, the garbage-feeding group had a similar daily energy intake and only a
slightly lower daily protein intake relative to wild-feeding baboons. Consequently, the feeding efficiency of the semi-provisioned
baboons was appreciably higher than that of the non-provisioned baboons. For the totally wild-feeding baboons, samples were
large enough to permit analyses of feeding time and nutrient intake during different reproductive states and parity. Females
spent more time feeding and had higher daily energy and protein intake when they were pregnant or lactating than when they
were sexually cycling. Nulliparous females spent more time feeding than their multiparous counterparts. The daily energy intake
of nulliparous females was higher than that of their multiparous counterparts, but their daily protein intakes did not differ
significantly. Pregnant or lactating and nulliparous females had higher feeding efficiency than their sexually cycling and
multiparous counterparts. The two nulliparous females in the garbage-feeding group spent more time feeding but did not take

Summary Physical, nutritional and defensive qualities of seeds differ in the extent to which they influence granivore preference. In a study aimed to quantifying those differences, Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii) were found to prefer the seeds of just three of twenty-nine species: Cryptantha crassisepala, Oryzopsis hymenoides and Salsola kali. Oryzopsis hymenoides was most preferred during the early plant growth season (April–July); preference for S. kali peaked during late (August–November) and dormant (December–March) seasons; and greatest preference for C. crassisepala occurred during dormant and early seasons. Regression of forage ratios, averaged across seasons, against seed length, mass, abundance, patchiness, percent nitrogen, energy content, and chemical defenses showed seed length to be the most important predictor of seed preference. Seed length combined with nitrogen (protein) content and levels of two defensive compounds, saponins and non-protein amino acids, to account for 68% of the variation in seed preference. The importance of seed length rather than biomass indicated that there are limits to the ability of D. ordii to detect small seeds and that small size facilitated escape of dispersed seeds. Seasonality in preference suggested, however, that seed escape was encountered by predispersal harvesting of newly maturing seeds still on plants. Maximization of protein intake contradicted previously published observations, but presumably reflected low nitrogen availability. In addition to small size, the presence of saponins or non-protein amino acids in seeds was sufficient to negate the positive influence of higher protein content. 相似文献

A recent study demonstrated that variation in enamel cap crown formation in the anterior teeth is greater than that in the molars from two geographically distinct populations: native indigenous southern Africans and northern Europeans. Eighty southern African and 69 northern European premolars (P3 and P4) were analyzed in the present study. Cuspal, lateral, and total enamel formation times were assessed. Although cuspal enamel formation times were not consistently different between the two populations, both lateral and total enamel formation times generally were. Bonferroni-corrected t-tests showed that southern Africans had significantly shorter lateral enamel formation time for five of the six cusps, as well as significantly shorter total enamel formation time for these same cusps. An analysis of covariance performed on the lingual cusps of the upper third and fourth premolars showed that differences in enamel formation times between these populations remained when crown height was statistically controlled. A further goal of this study was to ascertain, based on perikymata counts, what Neandertal periodicities would have to be in order for their teeth to have lateral enamel formation times equivalent to either southern Africans or northern Europeans. To this end, perikymata were counted on 32 Neandertal premolars, and the counts were inserted into regression formulae relating perikymata counts to periodicity for each population and each tooth type. Neandertal enamel formation times could be equivalent to those of southern Africans or northern Europeans only if their hypothetical periodicities fall within the range of periodicities for African apes and modern humans (i.e., 6-12 days). The analysis revealed that both populations could encompass Neandertal timings, with hypothetical periodicities based on the southern African population necessitating a lower range of periodicity (6-8 days) than those based on the northern European population (8-11 days). 相似文献

Porcine embryonic loss during early gestation is a serious problem in swine production. Improving embryonic survival can be achieved by maternal manipulation. Protein and energy are two major components of the diet, which play decisive roles in embryonic survival. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of enhancing maternal protein or energy intake on embryonic survival during early gestation in gilts and to explore the underlying mechanism. From day (d) 0 to 30 of gestation, 40 gilts (Landrace × York) were randomly allocated to 5 diets according to daily intake of low (L, National Research Council (NRC) recommendation for gestation gilts), medium (M, 20% higher than NRC) or high (H, 40% higher than NRC) CP or metabolisable energy (ME) (LCPLME, MCPLME, HCPLME, LCPHME, HCPHME). Gilts were sacrificed on d 30 of gestation, and number of foetuses and corpora lutea, embryonic survival rate, uterine weight, and total volume of allantoic fluid were recorded or calculated. Gene expression was determined by Quantitative Real-time PCR (qPCR), western blot or immunohistochemistry. Results showed that increasing protein or ME intake significantly increased embryonic survival rate. Compared with diet LCPLME, plasma progesterone (P4) concentration in diet LCPHME increased at d 14 and d 30 of gestation. Progesterone receptor (PGR) was found not to be expressed in the epithelia but was strongly expressed in the stroma of the endometrium. Increasing protein or ME intake did not alter PGR expression in the endometrium. There was also no change in the amount of P4, hepatocyte growth factor, and fibroblast growth factor-7 in the endometrium. The mRNA abundance of cationic amino acid transporter 1 in the endometrium in diet LCPHME and HCPHME was significantly lower than in diet LCPLME. Diet HCPLME showed a tendency to increase neutral amino acid transporter 1 mRNA expression in the endometrium compared to diet LCPLME (P = 0.087). In conclusion, increasing maternal protein or ME intake had a positive effect on the embryonic survival. Increased protein intake by 20 or 40% did not alter plasma P4 level, but increasing ME intake by 40% improved plasma P4 concentration at d 14 and 30 of gestation. Increasing maternal protein or ME intake did not induce PGR expression in the endometrium. Maternal protein and energy intake likely mediate transportation of cationic and neutral amino acids from mother to foetus to affect embryonic survival and development. 相似文献

Several case-control studies have reported possible associations between heterocyclic amine (HCA) intake and the risk of cancer. However, the validity of a questionnaire to assess HCA intake has hardly been examined. In particular, no biomarker which could serve as an independent measure of habitual HCA intake has been established. Therefore, the validity of a questionnaire to assess HCA intake by means of a biomarker remains to be investigated. In this study, we examined the availability of hair HCAs as a biochemical indicator of dietary intake of HCAs. Study subjects were 20 volunteers (7 men and 13 women) aged 25–57 years, either residents of Tokyo or the neighboring cities in Japan. We collected individual weighed dietary records (DR) over 28 consecutive days. Approximately 3–5 g of hair was collected twice from all subjects before and after DR at intervals of 1–3 months. The mean (S.D.) 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) level of hair was 1376.0 pg/g hair (928.9) and 16.6 ng/g melanin (12.3). A steady increase in the mean PhIP level in hair from the lowest to the highest tertile of the grilled/stir-fried meat intake was observed (P = 0.009), but not in the grilled/stir-fried fish intake (P = 0.461). The PhIP level in hair was highly correlated with the grilled/stir-fried meat intake (r = 0.68) but not with the grilled/stir-fried fish intake (r = 0.28). These observations were made of hair with and without melanin adjustment. The present study indicates that the PhIP level in hair can be used as a biological indicator of dietary intake of HCAs. 相似文献

Octadecenoic (18:1) trans-fatty acid fractions from margarine, butter and plasma phospholipids (PL) were isolated by silver ion TLC, and nine positional isomers (n-11-n-3) were identified by GC-MS based on their ozonolysis products. The GC analysis of the isolated fractions gave similar peak profiles and separated seven trans-isomers (n-11-n-6 and n-3). Without a preceding isolation step, the reproducibility of the Gc method for plasma PL elaidic (18:1 n-9 trans) and trans-vaccenic acids (n-7) was 3.4 and 2.7% (R.S.D.), respectively. These trans-isomers were rapidly incorporated and cleared in plasma PL and they closely reflected both increased and decreased intake of 18:1 trans-fatty acids during moderate fat substitutions. Significant associations between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and PL elaidic and trans-vaccenic acids appeared in habitual margarine users only. 相似文献

Cell competition is a struggle for existence between cells in heterogeneous tissues of multicellular organisms.Loser cells,which die during cell competition,are normally viable when grown only with other loser cells,but when mixed with winner cells,they are at a growth disadvantage and undergo apoptosis.Intriguingly,several recent studies have revealed that cells bearing mutant tumor-suppressor genes,which show overgrowth and tumorigenesis in a homotypic situation,are frequently eliminated,through cell competition,from tissues in which they are surrounded by wild-type cells.Here,we focus on the regulation of cellular competitiveness and the mechanism of cell competition as inferred from two different categories of mutant cells:(1) slower-growing cells and (2) structurally defective cells.We also discuss the possible role of cell competition as an intrinsic homeostasis system through which normal cells sense and remove aberrant cells,such as precancerous cells,to maintain the integrity and normal development of tissues and organs. 相似文献

Leaf trichome variation was studied in a population of Wigandia urens (Hydrophyllaceae) in relation to water availability, diversity of herbivorous insects, and grazing rates. Plants of W. urens have glandular and urticant (stinging hairs) trichomes, and it is possible to distinguish two types of leaves: smooth leaves with only glandular trichomes and bristly leaves with both types of trichomes. Density of urticant trichomes was negatively correlated with weekly mean precipitation. Fourteen species of insects in five different orders feed on leaves of W. urens throughout the year. Grazing rates varied according to type and age of leaves. Grazing rates were lower in smooth than bristly young leaves but the rates were similar for mature leaves. Secondary metabolites, screened using qualitative methods, showed similar classes of compounds in both types of leaves. Bristly leaves had significantly higher concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorous and water and these nutritional differences were well correlated with the differences in grazing rates between bristly and smooth leaves. 相似文献

We determined the effect of dietary protein on the distribution of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) binding proteins in chicken plasma. Three groups of male broilers (n=6 per group) were fed (ad libitum) isocaloric diets containing 12, 21 or 30% dietary protein. Birds were fed respective diets beginning at 7 days of age and killed at 28 days. No differences were observed between adequate (21%) and high (30%) protein intakes for any of the parameters investigated (growth criteria, plasma levels of IGF-I, growth hormone or IGF-binding proteins). Feeding protein deficient diets (12%) resulted in a 34% decrease in body weight, 17% decrease in feed intake and a 39% increase in feed/gain ratio. IGF-binding proteins in plasma samples were separated by SDS-PAGE and transferred to nitrocellulose sheets. Nitrocellulose blots were probed with [125I]chicken IGF-II. Four regions of binding activity corresponding to 70, 43, 30 and 24 kDa were observed in all samples. Birds consuming 12% dietary group protein had less than 50% of the 43-kDa binding activity of birds consuming 21 or 30% dietary protein. The 30-kDa binding activity was 42% lower in the 12% dietary protein group compared to birds consuming adequate protein. In contrast, 70- and 24-kDa binding activities were not influenced by dietary protein. Chickens consuming 12% dietary protein had higher levels of growth hormone and lower levels of IGF-I than those consuming 21 or 30% dietary protein. These data indicate that in chickens, the circulating levels of at least two independent IGF-binding proteins are influenced by dietary protein. 相似文献

Quantitative (or real-time) PCR was used to amplify food-specific DNA and measure consumption rates and digestion efficiencies of four foods - two prey (Aphis glycines and Leptinotarsa decemlineata eggs) and two non-prey (Zea mays pollen and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae) species - over different larval stages of Coleomegilla maculata. The amount of Z. mays pollen consumed increased as larvae aged, but not proportionately with larval size, such that consumption rates decreased uniformly with insect age. While aging larvae fed A. glycines had a similar pattern in their diminishing consumption rates, they consumed similar amounts of A. glycines regardless of age, suggesting a negative feedback mechanism for consumption of this species of aphids. Older larvae digested three of the four foods significantly more efficiently than younger larvae, the exception being larvae fed A. glycines which was digested at a similar rate throughout the larval stage. There was a significant effect of time on food quantity detected for all four species of food. We conclude that C. maculata expands its physiological capacity for digesting prey and non-prey foods as they age in order to better accommodate the increased nutritional needs of the older larvae. This strategy has important implications for the life history strategies of zoophytophagous insects and how they function within foods webs. 相似文献
