Theory predicts that fish should assort in shoals on the basis of similar phenotypic traits to minimize predation risk and to maximize foraging efficiency. A single phenotypic character, body size, was considered and the hypothesis tested that free-ranging fish shoals are sizeassorted. Furthermore, a second test investigated whether fish within multi-species shoals are more strongly size-assorted with conspecifics than with heterospecifics. Twelve fish shoals, each comprising two different species (golden shiner Notemigonus crysoleucas , and banded killifish Fundulus diaphanus ) were caught in the littoral zone of a north temperate lake using a beach seine. Shoal membership size ranged from 36 to 776 fish, and mean standard body length of members ranged from 18 to 34 mm. Fish were assorted by body size at two different levels, namely, between shoals and at the level of species within shoals. Body sizes of shiners and killifish within shoals were significantly different in seven out of 12 shoals, with killifish being the larger species in five cases and shiners being the larger one in two cases. Because there is considerable overlap in body size between the two species in the population, the observed species-related size-assortativeness within shoals was not just the by-product of a directional size difference (between species) in the population. These findings provide strong quantitative evidence for size-sorting in free-ranging fish shoals and raise questions concerning the formation of multi-species fish shoals. 相似文献

When choosing between shoals differing in Schistocephalus solidus infection status, uninfected test sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus showed a preference for joining uninfected conspecifics when shoal sizes were equal, but reversed this preference when the relative size of the infected shoal was increased by a factor of 3. When given a choice between a shoal composed of size-matched minnows Phoxinus phoxinus and a shoal composed of the same number of all uninfected or all S. solidus -infected sticklebacks, test fish always preferred the sticklebacks, regardless of their infection status, over the minnow shoal. These observations suggest that species, parasite status and shoal size are all of importance when fish decide which shoal to join. 相似文献

Male and female zebra fish Danio rerio were given choices of shoals that differed in sex and size. Male zebra fish preferred to associate with female shoals over male shoals, but had no preference when given a choice between a mixed‐sex shoal and either a male or female shoal. Female zebra fish showed no significant preference when given a choice between male and females shoals, nor between mixed‐sex shoals and either male or female shoals. When given choices between shoals of differing size, females preferred to associate with the larger shoal, whether or not they were composed of males or females. Males, however, had no preference for larger shoals over smaller shoals, whether or not they were composed of males or females. These results showed that male zebra fish were capable of distinguishing between males and females solely on the basis of visual cues. Furthermore, these results demonstrated a significant difference between the shoaling choices of male and female zebra fish, which may indicate a difference in the function of shoaling for the two sexes. 相似文献

Summary Restriction patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from threePhaseolus species were examined to estimate their relative genome sizes and to determine the level of interspecific variability and relatedness. Three restriction endonucleases that produced relatively simple profiles were identified and used to determine the genome size of the three species. Taking into account fragment stoichiometries, the average estimates across enzymes were 456, 324, and 400 kb, respectively, forP. vulgaris, P. coccineus, andP. acutifolius. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) differentiated the species when the mtDNAs were digested with seven endonucleases and hybridized with five cosmid clones covering ca. 200 kb of mtDNA sequences. Proportions of shared restriction fragments between every two species were computed as F-values and demonstrated thatP. vulgaris andP. coccineus are more related to each other than either is toP. acutifolius, and that the latter has a similar degree of relationship to the other two species. 相似文献

There is an increasing interest in the relationship between adult coral reef fishes and their parasites; however, there is almost no information concerning post larvae (i.e. newly recruited) fish and their parasites. Newly recruited and juvenile fish are highly sensitive to their environment and they have a very low survival rate. Fish grouping behavior has been studied in several ways and many studies have shown that increasing group size might be a way to share a cost linked to parasitism, via a dilution effect. To my knowledge, this hypothesis has never been tested for juveniles of fish. The potential influence of school size and density of a juvenile coral reef fish, Haemulon flavolineatum (Haemulidae), on the success of a monogenean fish parasite, Haliotrema sp., was studied. First, the fish acquired their monogeneans when they were more than 40 mm long, size corresponding also to a change in their foraging behavior. Second, there was a positive effect of fish density on the success of the establishment of the parasite on the host population. Finally, although the parasite success was not directly related to fish group size, the parasite abundance was higher for intermediate shoal size. These results are discussed in terms of the consequence parasitism may have on a fish's shoaling and to a larger extent on the fish population. 相似文献

Egg size is a widely-studied trait and yet the causes and consequences of variation in this trait remain poorly understood. Egg size varies greatly within many avian species, with the largest egg in a population generally being at least 50% bigger, and sometimes twice as large, as the smallest. Generally, approximately 70% of the variation in egg mass is due to variation between rather than within clutches, although there are some cases of extreme intra-clutch egg-size variation. Despite the large amount of variation in egg size between females, this trait is highly consistent within individuals between breeding attempts; the repeatability of egg size is generally above 0.6 and tends to be higher than that of clutch size or laying date. Heritability estimates also tend to be much higher for egg size (> 0.5) than for clutch size or laying date (< 0.5). As expected, given the high repeatability and heritability of egg size, supplemental food had no statistically significant effect on this trait in 18 out of 28 (64%) studies. Where dietary supplements do increase egg size, the effect is never more than 13% of the control values and is generally much less. Similarly, ambient temperature during egg formation generally explains less than 15% of the variation in egg size. In short, egg size appears to be a characteristic of individual females, and yet the traits of a female that determine egg size are not clear. Although egg size often increases with female age (17 out of 37 studies), the change in egg size is generally less than 10%. Female mass and size rarely explain more than 20% of the variation in egg size within species. A female's egg size is not consistently related to other aspects of reproductive performance such as clutch size, laying date, or the pair's ability to rear young. Physiological characteristics of the female (e.g. endogenous protein stores, oviduct mass, rate of protein uptake by ovarian follicles) show more promise as potential determinants of egg size. With regards to the consequences of egg-size variation for offspring fitness, egg size is often correlated with offspring mass and size within the first week after hatching, but the evidence for more long-lasting effects on chick growth and survival is equivocal. In other oviparous vertebrates, the magnitude of egg-size variation within populations is often as great or greater than that observed within avian populations. Although there are much fewer estimates of the repeatability of egg size in other taxa, the available evidence suggests that egg size may be more flexible within individuals. Furthermore, in non-avian species (particularly fish and turtles), it is more common for female mass or size to explain a substantial proportion of the variation in egg size. Further research into the physiological basis of egg-size variation is needed to shed light on both the proximate and ultimate causes of intraspecific variation in this trait in birds. 相似文献

A bi-monthly underwater visual census was conducted in the subtidal habitat of Nagahama, Wakasa Bay, Sea of Japan, over 5 years
from January 2002 to December 2006. A total of 83 fish species and 63,328 individuals were recorded over 120 1-h visual censuses
composed of three 2 × 200 m transects. The number of both total individuals (abundance) and species (richness) were strongly
correlated with the bottom-water temperature. Species richness was greatest in summer (July–September), with 10–20 species
per 400 m2, when the sea-bottom temperature was highest (24–28°C), and lowest in winter (January–March), with 1–8 species per 400 m2, when the temperature was lowest (10–12°C). Five species, i.e., rockfish, Sebastes inermis, wrasse, Pseudolabrus sieboldi, two species of goby, Acentrogobius pflaumii and Tridentiger trigonocephalus, and pygmy filefish, Rudarius ercodes, were frequently observed and present in more than 200 of the total of 360 total transects. While the presence of most fish
species was dependent on water temperature, some species were independent of water temperature, including anchovy, Engraulis japonicus, S. inermis, wasp fish, Hypodytes rubripinnis, A. pflaumii and pufferfish, Takifugu poecilonotus. Jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus, was the most abundant fish, being most typically seen from spring through autumn, with a total of 21,850 individuals observed
over the whole census period. Some species showed strong annual fluctuations in abundance. The interannual stability in fish
abundance and species richness was probably because the fish assemblage was composed of a sufficiently large number of species,
but with the number of each species fluctuating over time. A comparison of the present survey to one in 1970–72 revealed that
over the last 30 years southern fish species have significantly increased whereas those indigenous to northern waters have
decreased.

Spatial patterns of morphological and genetic polymorphisms between the two banded killifish sub-species ( Fundulus diaphanus diaphanus and F. d. menona ) provide evidence that these sub-species represent distinct evolutionary lineages corresponding to glacial races of Atlantic and Mississippian origins. Individuals with intermediate phenotypes in Lake Ontario and the upper St Lawrence River probably result from secondary contacts between these races. The hybrid zone unexpectedly extends to Lake Erie and involves the introgression of the F. d. diaphanus mitochondrial genome into fish with morphology like that of F. d. menona . 相似文献

The behavioural response of downstream moving European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) to velocity gradients created by orifice weirs placed in a flume were studied. The aim was to identify interspecific variation and test two hypotheses: (1) a more abrupt velocity gradient would induce a higher avoidance response and over a greater distance, and (2) fish would acclimate to the velocity gradient by incrementally sampling conditions closer to the orifice until successful passage occurred. European eel moved along the channel floor and walls, responding after physical contact with the weir. Brown trout moved downstream head first and switched orientation at the velocity gradient without contacting the structure. Brown trout spent longer than European eel immediately upstream of a channel floor orifice, although time to pass was similar; but less time at a mid-column orifice despite taking longer to pass. The mid-column orifice delayed both species longer. European eel passed orifices head first on initial encounter with no rejections, whereas brown trout passed tail first. Positions where brown trout first switched orientation and closest point to the orifice reached during initial approach occurred closer to a channel floor than mid-column treatment. Brown trout did not appear to acclimate to the velocity gradient by sampling successively closer to the orifice. The species-area relationship is an important factor in the study of species diversity, conservation biology, and landscape ecology. A deeper understanding of this relationship is necessary, in order to provide recommendations on how to improve the quality of data collection on macrofungal diversity in different land use systems in future studies, a systematic assessment of methodological parameters, in particular optimal plot sizes. The species-area relationship of macrofungi in tropical and temperate climatic zones and four different land use systems were investigated by determining the macrofungal species richness in plot sizes ranging from 100 m2 to 10 000 m2 over two sampling seasons. We found that the effect of plot size on recorded species richness significantly differed between land use systems with the exception of monoculture systems. For both climate zones, land use system needs to be considered when determining optimal plot size. Using an optimal plot size was more important than temporal replication (over two sampling seasons) in accurately recording species richness. 相似文献

While factors affecting shoal mate choice have been examined extensively in adult guppies (Poecilia reticulata), few studies have focused on the shoaling behavior of juveniles. In this study, juvenile guppies were tested for their ability to shoal as well as their response to shoal mates of different body size and to shoals with different numbers of individuals. In dichotomous choice tests, 10-day-old guppies (mean body length=8.83 mm), 30-day-old guppies (13.17 mm) and 50-day-old guppies (18.6mm) were given the opportunity to swim near shoals of five fish or an empty chamber. In most cases, the juvenile fish demonstrated shoaling behavior, swimming near a group of fish rather than an empty chamber, regardless of the age of the stimulus shoal. When presented with two shoals, one of similar age and body size and one of dissimilar age and body size, only the 50-day-old guppies showed a significant preference for the age-matched shoal. Similarly, when choosing between a large shoal and a small shoal, only the 50-day-old guppies spent significantly more time near the larger shoal. Thus, while juveniles at each age shoaled, only 50-day-old fish demonstrated the shoal mate discrimination seen in adult fish. 相似文献

In order to test the temporal stability within and the reproducibility of larval fish assemblages between years, the larval
fish assemblage at Helgoland Roads, North Sea (NE Atlantic) was quantitatively sampled almost daily from January 2003 to December
2005. The survey resulted in a total of 462 samples containing 50,632 larval fish of at least 42 taxa. In winter the larval
fish assemblage was mainly dominated by larvae emerging from demersal eggs. This changed gradually to larvae hatching from
pelagic eggs. Larvae from pelagic eggs dominated the ichthyoplankton assemblage in summer. A remarkably stable seasonality
in terms of dominance patterns with recurring, season-specific fish assemblages was observed over the 3 years, despite substantial
variation in environmental conditions such as a temperature difference of almost 20°C between summer and winter. The lesser
sandeel (Ammodytes marinus), was the only species which showed significant fluctuations in abundance between the years. After removal of this species
from the analysis, the dominance patterns of the remaining fish species were almost identical between years. 相似文献
