Based on the data collected in five marine expeditions of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute from 2002 through 2007, the spatial and temporary variability of benthic communities in the Central Depression of the Barents Sea (licensed plot of the Shtokmanovskoe condensed gas deposit) has been analyzed. The range of quantitative characteristics and the variability of species composition of deep-water zoobenthos have been determined. The influence of an insignificant change in the collecting method on the obtained results has been examined.  相似文献

We assessed the long-term (16 years) effects of introducing piscivores (northern pike) into a small, boreal lake (Lake 221, Experimental Lakes Area) containing abundant populations of two planktivorous fish species. After the introduction, pearl dace were extirpated and yellow perch abundance was greatly reduced. Daphnia species shifted from D. galeata mendota to larger bodied Daphnia catawba, but the total zooplankton biomass did not increase, nor did the biomass of large grazers such as Daphnia. Phytoplankton biomass decreased after the northern pike introduction, but increased when northern pike were partially removed from the lake. Phosphorus (P) excretion by fish was ∼0.18 mg P m−2 d−1 before pike addition, declined rapidly to approximately 0.03–0.10 as planktivorous perch and dace populations were reduced by pike, and increased back to premanipulation levels after the pike were partially removed and the perch population recovered. When perch were abundant, P excretion by fish supported about 30% of the P demand by primary producers, decreasing to 6–14% when pike were abundant. Changes in phytoplankton abundance in Lake 221 appear to be driven by changes in P cycling by yellow perch, whose abundance was controlled by the addition and removal of pike. These results confirm the role of nutrient cycling in mediating trophic cascades and are consistent with previous enclosure experiments conducted in the same lake.  相似文献

Summary Variations in under-ice scalar irradiance, P vs I parameters and the CHLa C–1 ratio of natural assemblages of sea-ice microalgae from the Barents Sea growing at -1.8°C in May and September 1988 are described, including one diurnal station. CHLa C–1 ratios of 0.031–0.071 mg mg–1 indicate shade adaptated assemblages both in May and September. Values for B (photosynthetic efficiency) were generally low, e.g. 0.0025–0.0078 mg C (mg CHLa)–1 h–1 (mol m–2 s–1)–1, and should be typical for self-shaded algae in mats or aggregates of about 4 mm thickness. Provided no self shading and the typical spectral distribution of light under ice without algae, B would, however, be about 2.5 times higher. Photoinhibition of the photosynthetic response was negligible. Maximum carbon uptake P m B was 0.15–0.24 and 0.032–0.088 mg C (mg CHLa)–1 h–1 in May and September, respectively. Diurnal variations were small, particularly for P m B . Calculations of the maximum specific gross growth rate yielded an upper limit of 0.20–0.24 and 0.01–0.04 d–1 for assemblages in May and September, respectively; the latter may have been in a resting stage.Contribution No. 245, Trondhjem Biological Station  相似文献

This study considers variability in phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacterial abundances and production rates, in one of the most oligotrophic marine regions in the world–the Levantine Basin. The temporal dynamics of these planktonic groups were studied in the coastal waters of the southeastern Mediterranean Sea approximately every two weeks for a total of two years. Heterotrophic bacteria were abundant mostly during late summer and midwinter, and were positively correlated with bacterial production and with N2 fixation. Based on size fractionating, picophytoplankton was abundant during the summer, whereas nano-microphytoplankton predominated during the winter and early spring, which were also evident in the size-fractionated primary production rates. Autotrophic abundance and production correlated negatively with temperature, but did not correlate with inorganic nutrients. Furthermore, a comparison of our results with results from the open Levantine Basin demonstrates that autotrophic and heterotrophic production, as well as N2 fixation rates, are considerably higher in the coastal habitat than in the open sea, while nutrient levels or cell abundance are not different. These findings have important ecological implications for food web dynamics and for biological carbon sequestration in this understudied region.  相似文献

The biomass and productivity of sea ice algae was assessed in the northwestern Barents Sea in May 2004. Sea ice algal pigment content was patchy with a mean of 18.5 ± 8.9 mg Chla m−2. The algal community was dominated by the diatom Nitzschia frigida. Primary production measured by 14C incubations was between 0.37 and 2.8 mg C m−2 h−1, which compared well with oxygen-based methods using the diffusive boundary layer approach (0.071–1.1 mg C m−2 h−1). Given the differences in the irradiances under which these two sets of measurements were made, there was a strong level of consistency between the two sets of results. Measurements of primary production were consistent with previous Arctic measurements but high spatial heterogeneity made a regional estimate of production inappropriate.  相似文献

The dynamics of zooplankton biomass and the biomass of the key copepod species Calanus finmarchicus were studied in the southern Barents Sea. The effect of climatic factors, i.e., water temperature and the atmospheric indices, on the zooplankton was assessed. It was found that the biomass of the zooplankton correlated positively both with the water temperature and winter NAO index of the previous year. In this study, we examined a 3000 km2 area to the southeastof Bear Island in the central Barents Sea with respect to copepodabundance and depth distribution at nine stations in March,April and May of 1988 and 1989. In order to describe the populationdynamics of the most prominent species in the area during theperiod of study, the annual ascent and abundance of Calanusfinmarchicus, Metridia longa and Calanus glacialis are shown.Stage abundance, vertical distribution and cohort developmentdid vary between species and years at one site. The number ofspecies and the complexity of the data for the entire area studiedhave encouraged us to search for more significant and persistentpatterns by using a canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Weincluded a total of 27 species and stage categories, latitude,salinity and sigma from the nine stations in 1989 We performedthis analysis for 1989. since we only have environmental data(CTD) available from the same stations in that year The species-environmentrelationship showed that the zooplankton community could notbe grouped according to area (latitude) or environmental (sigma,salinity) conditions during March–May in 1989. This meansthat the differences in environmental conditions in the areaof study in 1989 do not mediate any consistent gradient in thezooplankton community. When comparing the copepod data for bothyears. the largest differences are associated with the depthand month vectors. The largest interannual variation is seenin the copepod community in the depth strata from 100 to 400m. and is related to a lesser degree of similarity among thespecies and stages found in this depth interval throughout thestudy. Two species were particularly responsible for the interannualdifferences: Pseudocalanus acuspes CV and females, and C glacialisCV and adults. Changes in these two species are clearly relatedto major shifts in the hydrographic conditions between the 2years, where 1988 was generally colder compared to 1989.  相似文献

A large-scale survey was conducted in August 2004 to estimate the size of the Barents Sea polar bear subpopulation. We combined helicopter line transect distance sampling (DS) surveys in most of the survey area with total counts in small areas not suitable for DS. Due to weather constraints we failed to survey some of the areas originally planned to be covered by DS. For those, abundance was estimated using a ratio estimator, in which the auxiliary variable was the number of satellite telemetry fixes (in previous years). We estimated that the Barents Sea subpopulation had approximately 2,650 (95% CI approximately 1,900–3,600) bears. Given current intense interest in polar bear management due to the potentially disastrous effects of climate change, it is surprising that many subpopulation sizes are still unknown. We show here that line transect sampling is a promising method for addressing the need for abundance estimates.  相似文献

Dvoretsky VG. and Dvoretsky AG. 2011. Morphometric differentiation of Pseudocalanus minutus populations in the Barents Sea. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 00 : 1–12. We investigated spatial variations in the morphometric characteristics (total length of body, lengths of cephalothorax, abdomen and antennules, and their relative proportions) of Pseudocalanus minutus, an abundant copepod species across the Barents Sea in August–September 2007. Females were found to have higher values for the measured parameters than males. The average absolute morphometric characters of both sexes increased from the south to the north. In most cases, parameters were similar in the southern, central, and eastern regions delineated by cluster analyses of oceanographic variables. The morphometric characteristics were strongly correlated with environmental variables in both males and females. Multiple regression analysis showed that temperature together with salinity explained 72–85% (in females) and 38–91% (in males) of the total variations in the log10‐transformed morphometric parameters. According to principal component analysis and discriminant function analysis, two distinct groups could be separated in the Barents Sea. The first group included the copepods from the northern region; the other included populations from the southern, central, and eastern regions. The observed morphological variation can be interpreted as geographical variation connected with hydrological variability.  相似文献

This paper presents data on 48 individuals of the rare high-boreal crab speciesGeryon tridens Krøyer, 1837, retrieved from the stomachs of cod caught in the southwestern part of the Barents Sea and adjacent waters in 1987–1997. There was only one large male with a carapace width of 58 mm; the other individuals were juveniles with carapace widths of 21–48 mm and masses of 3.2–27.5 g. The length: width ratio of the crab carapaceL=(0.85±0.06)H and the dependence of mass on carapace width (cm)W=0.4637H 2.73 atr=0.99 were calculated. Analysis of the data provides evidence that this crab species is expanding its range to the northeast and is sustaining its invasion of the Barents Sea, where it was first recorded no less than 10–15 years. It is concluded that this species now permanently inhabits the region of the Finmarken and Rybach'ya banks, forming rather dense aggregations there, and, on sites of cod catches, it predominantly inhabits depths of 180–320 m, where the warm Atlantic waters dominate and sand-silt bottoms prevail. These bottoms are favorable for the sheltering of crabs, which have a burrowing mode of life.  相似文献

The extent, thickness and age of Arctic sea ice has dramatically declined since the late 1990s, and these trends are predicted to continue. Exploring the habitat use of sea‐ice‐dependent species can help us understand which resources they use and how their distribution responds to a changing environment. The goal of this study was to develop predictive models of the habitat use of an Arctic apex predator. Polar bear Ursus maritimus habitat use in the Barents Sea subpopulation was modelled with seasonal resource selection functions (RSFs) using satellite‐linked telemetry data from 294 collars deployed on female polar bears between 1991 and 2015. Polar bears selected habitat in the Marginal Ice Zone, with a preference for intermediate sea ice concentrations (40–80%). They spent most time in areas with relatively short travel distances to 15 or 75% ice concentration, and during spring and autumn they exhibited a preference for sea ice areas over the continental shelf or over shallower bathymetry). Predictions of the distribution of polar bears in the Barents Sea area can be made for specific sea ice scenarios using these models. Two such predictive distribution maps based on the autumn seasonal model were made and validated against two independent polar bear survey datasets collected in August 2004 and August 2015. The distribution of optimal polar bear habitat has shifted strongly northwards in all seasons of the year during the 25 yr study period.  相似文献

Comparative study of phytochemical compositions of the most widespread brown algae species (one laminarian and four fucoid algae) from Barents Sea has been performed. A modified technique for mannitol determination in brown algae is proposed. It was revealed that fucus algae (fam. Fucaceae) contain 3% (of total dry weight) less mannitol than laminaria (Laminaria saccharina). The contents of alginic acid and laminaran in the Barents Sea fucoids are more than 10% less compared to laminaria. The alga L. saccharina contains almost two times more iodine than the species of fam. Fucaceae. The amounts of fucoidan and sum lipids in the Barents Sea fucoid algae is higher than in Laminaria saccharina (4–7% and 1–3%, respectively). In terms of contents of main biologically active compounds, fucus and laminarian algae from Barents Sea are inferior to none of the Far-Eastern species. The Barents Sea algae may become an important source of biologically active compounds.  相似文献

Temporal variations in morphological characters of the shells were studied in 12 samples of mussels M. galloprovincialis Lam. from the Black Sea commercial collectors that belong to different generations. The samples were shown to be diverse in every studied character and the degree of characters' variability in the samples was different. The morphological diversity of samples diminished with age. Different generations from the same habitat had specific features of age-related variability expressed as different rates of age-related changes and direction and degree of variability. This effect is considered as an index of the influence of ecological conditions on the shell growth and formation.  相似文献
