Voluntarily shifting attention to a location of the visual field improves the perception of events that occur there. Regions of frontal cortex are thought to provide the top-down control signal that initiates a shift of attention, but because of the temporal limitations of functional brain imaging, the timing and sequence of attentional-control operations remain unknown. We used a new analytical technique (beamformer spatial filtering) to reconstruct the anatomical sources of low-frequency brain waves in humans associated with attentional control across time. Following a signal to shift attention, control activity was seen in parietal cortex 100–200 ms before activity was seen in frontal cortex. Parietal cortex was then reactivated prior to anticipatory biasing of activity in occipital cortex. The magnitudes of early parietal activations were strongly predictive of the degree of attentional improvement in perceptual performance. These results show that parietal cortex, not frontal cortex, provides the initial signals to shift attention and indicate that top-down attentional control is not purely top down.  相似文献

Morphine is among the most effective analgesics. However, many evidences suggest that, besides the well-know analgesic activity, repeated opioids treatment can induce some side effects such as dependence, hyperalgesia and tolerance. The mechanism of noxious information transmission in the central nervous system after dependence is not clear. An important neurotransmitter, dopamine (DA) participates not only in the process of opioid dependence but also in pain modulation in the central nervous system. In the present study we observed changes of electrical activities of pain-excitation neurons (PENs) and pain-inhibition neurons (PINs) in the caudate nucleus (Cd) following the development of morphine dependence. We also observed the role of DA on these changes. Our results revealed that both the latency of PEN discharges and the inhibitory duration of PIN discharges decreased, and the net increased values of PEN and PIN discharges increased in the Cd of morphine dependent rats. Those demonstrated that electrical activities of both PENs and PINs increased in morphine dependent rats. DA inhibited the electrical activities of PENs and enhanced those of PINs in morphine dependent rats.  相似文献

Modelling of the Coupling between Brain Electrical Activity and Metabolism   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In order to make an attempt at grouping the various aspects of brain functional imaging (fMRI, MRS, EEG-MEG, ...) within a coherent frame, we implemented a model consisting of a system of differential equations, that includes: (1) sodium membrane transport, (2) Na/K ATPase, (3) neuronal energy metabolism (i.e. glycolysis, buffering effect of phosphocreatine, and mitochondrial respiration), (4) blood-brain barrier exchanges and (5) brain hemodynamics, all the processes which are involved in the activation of brain areas. We assumed that the correlation between brain activation and metabolism could be due to either changes in the concentrations of ATP and ADP following activation of Na/K ATPase that result from the changes in ion concentrations, or the involvement, in different phases of metabolism, of a second messenger such as calcium. In this article, we show how this type of model enables interpretation of MRS and fMRI published data that were obtained during prolonged stimulations.  相似文献

During the discriminant analysis of the bioelectric brain activity, we found that there is a separate subgroup of children with autistic spectrum disorders that is close to the group of schizophrenia spectrum disorders but does not coincide with it. Differences between the experimental groups indicate the significance of impairments in the left frontal-temporal region, i.e., in the area responsible for speech development. When comparing the group of children with autistic spectrum disorders with other groups, we observed the significance of high-frequency rhythms.  相似文献

Motor alalia refers to a number of disorders of expressive speech that are caused by the dysfunction of cerebral structures in the period when the formation of the speech system is not complete. This form of speech disorder is considered as a language disorder characterized by a persistent disturbance of the assimilation of a system of linguistic units. The possible cause of deviations in the development of speech function in children is a disproportion in the levels of development of speech structures in the left and right hemispheres, and this temporary dominance is often associated with an increased activity in the right hemisphere. According to the results of electroencephalographic studies, in children aged five to six years, there are two types of changes of the bioelectric potential system interaction of the brain cortex. The disorders of the spatial organization of interregional EEG correlations are more pronounced in either the left or right hemispheres of the brain. Thus, motor alalia can be accompanied either by disturbances in the interaction between Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas of the left hemisphere, or between symmetrical areas of the right hemisphere.  相似文献

An attempt was made to reveal the mechanisms of adaptation of the human brain to fractional hypoxic load. With this in mind, the dynamics of spontaneous EEG was studied in a 10% hypoxic test performed before and after a course of normobaric hypoxic training. It was shown that under acute hypoxic conditions, the electrical activity of the brain is switched from the -range frequencies to the generation of medium-amplitude slow-wave oscillations predominantly of the range. This condition of electrogenesis is of a stable character and does not change upon external photostimulation. The training course of hypoxic therapy increases the EEG changes that are revealed. The switch to the generation of slow-wave medium-amplitude oscillations is likely to reflect the adaptation changes.  相似文献

With the aim of studying the formation of brain mechanisms of voluntary activity regulation in junior schoolchildren and the role of these mechanisms in the acquisition of the skill of writing, a complex neuropsychological investigation was carried out. In the EEG of children with learning problems and a deficit of voluntary activity regulation (VAR), signs of the functional immaturity of the fronto–thalamic regulatory system (FTS) were found. Comparative neuropsychological analysis revealed a specific impairment of the VAR in these children in the form of pronounced impulsiveness, instability of a program, problems in switching over from one program to another, and self-control difficulties. It is concluded that the functional maturation of the FTS is a mechanism of VAR development. It is shown that the VAR deficiency in children with FTS immaturity is combined with a delay in the development of semantic and mediating speech functions. It was found that the features of the development of the higher mental functions in seven- to eight-year-old children with FTS immaturity specifically affect both the semantic and graphic aspects of writing acquisition.  相似文献

Pregnant SD rats were exposed to ethanol (25 % (v/v) ethanol at 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 g/kg body weight from GD8 to GD20) to assess whether ethanol-derived acetaldehyde could interact with endogenous monoamine to generate tetrahydroisoquinoline or tetrahydro-beta-carboline in the fetuses. The fetal brain concentration of acetaldehyde increased remarkably after ethanol administration (2.6 times, 5.3 times and 7.8 times as compared to saline control in 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g/kg ethanol-treated groups, respectively) detected by HPLC with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatization. Compared to control, ethanol exposure induced the formation of 1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (salsolinol, Sal), N-methyl-salsolinol (NMSal) and 1-methyl-6-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline (6-OH-MTHBC) in fetal rat brains. Determined by HPLC with electrochemical detector, the levels of dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine in whole fetal brain were not remarkably altered by ethanol treatment, while the levels of homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid in high dose (4.0 g/kg) of ethanol-treated rats were significantly decreased compared to that in the control animals. 4.0 g/kg ethanol administration inhibited the activity of mitochondrial monoamine oxidase (51.3 % as compared to control) and reduced the activity of respiratory chain complex I (61.2 % as compared to control). These results suggested that ethanol-induced alteration of monoamine metabolism and the accumulation of dopamine-derived catechol isoquinolines and 5-hydroxytryptamine-derived tetrahydro-beta-carbolines may play roles in the developmental dysfuction of monoaminergic neuronal systems.  相似文献

Laboratory-reared males of the cactophilic Drosophila pachea exhibit a spontaneous and sex-specific suppression of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity within 4 days after eclosion. A lack of ADH activity also is usually seen in wild-caught males, although relatively high activity is always seen in female flies. In the present study we examined the effectiveness of different alcohols and related compounds, including several found naturally in necroses of the host cactus, to induce suppressed ADH activity in wild males of D. pachea and to serve as enzyme substrates. The primary alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, and 1-pentanol), and the secondary alcohols (2-propanol and 2-butanol), each induced activity after 24 h exposure, although to different degrees. 1,2-Propanediol was usually effective as an inducer, but 2,3-butanediol usually was ineffective. Little or no induction was seen with 1-octanol, 2-pentanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, or acetaldehyde. Although the compounds tested varied in their ability to function as ADH substrates, methanol was the only alcohol that showed no activity staining. Ethanol induction of ADH activity was apparent after 3-6 h exposure and induced activity decreased dramatically within 1 week of flies being placed in an alcohol-free environment. Ethanol exposure did not induce ADH in adult female D. pachea, or in adult males and females of D. acutilabella in which control males show reduced ADH activity compared to females. The implications of the loss of ADH activity in adult males of D. pachea, as they relate to feeding ecology and fitness, are discussed.  相似文献

Background

In October 2007, a cluster of patients experiencing a novel polyradiculoneuropathy was identified at a pork abattoir (Plant A). Patients worked in the primary carcass processing area (warm room); the majority processed severed heads (head-table). An investigation was initiated to determine risk factors for illness.

Methods and Results

Symptoms of the reported patients were unlike previously described occupational associated illnesses. A case-control study was conducted at Plant A. A case was defined as evidence of symptoms of peripheral neuropathy and compatible electrodiagnostic testing in a pork abattoir worker. Two control groups were used - randomly selected non-ill warm-room workers (n = 49), and all non-ill head-table workers (n = 56). Consenting cases and controls were interviewed and blood and throat swabs were collected. The 26 largest U.S. pork abattoirs were surveyed to identify additional cases. Fifteen cases were identified at Plant A; illness onsets occurred during May 2004–November 2007. Median age was 32 years (range, 21–55 years). Cases were more likely than warm-room controls to have ever worked at the head-table (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 6.6; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.6–26.7), removed brains or removed muscle from the backs of heads (AOR, 10.3; 95% CI, 1.5–68.5), and worked within 0–10 feet of the brain removal operation (AOR, 9.9; 95% CI, 1.2–80.0). Associations remained when comparing head-table cases and head-table controls. Workers removed brains by using compressed air that liquefied brain and generated aerosolized droplets, exposing themselves and nearby workers. Eight additional cases were identified in the only two other abattoirs using this technique. The three abattoirs that used this technique have stopped brain removal, and no new cases have been reported after 24 months of follow up. Cases compared to controls had higher median interferon-gamma (IFNγ) levels (21.7 pg/ml; vs 14.8 pg/ml, P<0.001).

Discussion

This novel polyradiculoneuropathy was associated with removing porcine brains with compressed air. An autoimmune mechanism is supported by higher levels of IFNγ in cases than in controls consistent with other immune mediated illnesses occurring in association with neural tissue exposure. Abattoirs should not use compressed air to remove brains and should avoid procedures that aerosolize CNS tissue. This outbreak highlights the potential for respiratory or mucosal exposure to cause an immune-mediated illness in an occupational setting.  相似文献

As a result of the work of the Public Health Laboratory Service Working Party on Rubella (1970) it was possible to examine the children of 60 susceptible women who were in contact with rubella during their pregnancy and who subsequently showed serological evidence of the infection, despite immunoglobulin prophylaxis. When the children were assessed between 8 months and 4 years 8 months of age a blood sample was also taken and tested for rubella antibodies so that a retrospective diagnosis of congenital rubella infection could be made. Only 19% of children exposed to subclinical maternal rubella showed evidence of intrauterine infection compared with 53% of those born to mothers who had clinical rubella. One of the 26 children exposed to subclinical maternal infection had a rubella defect, compared with 9 of the 34 children exposed to clinical maternal rubella.  相似文献

Background

Less than 45% of U.S. children meet the 60 min.d-1 physical activity (PA) guideline. Structured after-school PA programing is one approach to help increase activity levels. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and short-term impact of a supervised after-school PA and nutrition education program on activity levels.

Methods

Forty-two 3rd-5th graders from an inner-city school in Boston, MA were randomly assigned to a 10-wk after-school program of either: 1) weekly nutrition education, or 2) weekly nutrition education plus supervised PA 3 d.wk-1 at a community-based center. At baseline and follow-up, PA was measured using accelerometry and fitness (VO2max) was estimated using the PACER 15-m shuttle run. Additional measures obtained were non-fasting finger stick total cholesterol (TC) and glucose levels, waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), percent body fat (%BF), and blood pressure (BP). Values are presented as mean±SE, unless noted otherwise.

Results

Thirty-six participants completed the study (mean±SD; age 9.7±0.9 years). Participants attended >80% of the sessions. After adjusting for accelerometer wear time and other design factors, light and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) increased in the nutrition+PA group (+21.5±14.5 and +8.6±8.0 min.d-1, respectively) and decreased in the nutrition only group (-35.2±16.3 and -16.0±9.0 min.d-1, respectively); mean difference between groups of 56.8±21.7 min.d-1 (light PA, p = 0.01) and 24.5±12.0 min.d-1 (MVPA, p = 0.04). Time spent in sedentary behaviors declined in the nutrition+PA group (-14.8±20.7 min.d-1) and increased in the nutrition only group (+55.4±23.2 min.d-1); mean difference between groups of -70.2±30.9 min.d-1 (p = 0.02). Neither group showed changes in TC, BP, WC, %BF, BMI percentile, or fitness (p>0.05).

Conclusions

The supervised afterschool community-based nutrition and PA program was well accepted and had high attendance. The changes in light PA and MVPA has potential to promote weight maintenance in inner-city elementary school children, however longer term studies with larger samples are needed.

Analysis of the character and systemic organization of cerebral reactions to external effects aids in adequate evaluation of functional and adaptive human capabilities in norm and pathology. Changes in the spatiotemporal organization of the EEG (according to visual and spectral coherence analyses, as well as localization of equivalent dipole sources of pathological EEG phenomena) and the electrooculogram in response to afferent stimuli at different stages of postcomatose recovery of mental activity were studied in 84 patients with severe brain injury in a prolonged postcomatose unconscious state. Both standard indifferent (a rhythmically flashing light and an acoustic tone) and functionally significant (a moving contrasting black-and-white strip, a red spot, the mother’s voice, music, etc.) afferent stimuli were used. Functionally different reactive changes in the EEG were detected even in deep inhibition of consciousness (a vegetative state). EEG reactions including a strengthening of pathological foci in the CNS with dominant features suggested a poor prognosis. In the absence of such foci, a positive activating effect on mental recovery was found for afferent stimulation, in particular, functionally significant stimulation. Learning appears to be ubiquitous among animals, as it plays a key role in many behaviors including foraging and reproduction. Although there is some genetic basis for differences in learning ability and memory retention, environment also plays an important role, as it does for any other trait. For example, adult animals maintained in enriched housing conditions learn faster and remember tasks for longer than animals maintained in impoverished conditions. Such plasticity in adult learning ability has often been linked to plasticity in the brain, and studies aimed at understanding the mechanisms, stimuli, and consequences of adult behavioral and brain plasticity are numerous. However, the role of experiences during post-embryonic development in shaping plasticity in adult learning ability and memory retention remain relatively unexplored. Using the house cricket (Acheta domesticus) as a model organism, we developed a protocol to allow the odor preference of a large number of crickets to be tested in a short period of time. We then used this new protocol to examine how enrichment or impoverishment at two developmental stages (either the last nymphal instar or young adult) affected adult memory. Our results show that regardless of nymphal rearing conditions, crickets that experienced an enriched rearing condition as young adults performed better on a memory task than individuals that experienced an impoverished condition. Older adult crickets (more than 1 week post adult molt) did not demonstrate differences in memory of the odor task, regardless of rearing condition as a young adult. Our results suggest that environmentally-induced plasticity in memory may be restricted to the young adult stage.  相似文献
