According to current theory, anti‐predator benefits promote group formation in open‐dwelling ungulates. An inverse relationship between vigilance effort and group size has been documented frequently and thought to reflect the consequent decrease in perceived predation risk as group size increases. In contrast, competition costs are supposed to set the upper limit to the number of individuals that can forage together. As anti‐predator behavior is no longer functional in the absence of predation and competition costs might be affected by resource distribution, the net benefit of aggregation will depend on the particular combination of predation risk and habitat structure experienced by the individual. To test this hypothesis, group‐size effects on female time allocation and within‐group aggression rate were compared between two guanaco populations exposed to contrasting levels of puma predation. Habitat structure within both sites consisted of mosaics of shrublands and grasslands, and group‐size effects were also compared between these habitat types. Females under predation risk showed a strong reduction in vigilance as the number of adults in the group increased, whereas females from the predator‐free population showed overall low levels of vigilance, regardless of group size. These results emphasize the anti‐predator significance of the group‐size effect on female vigilance, as well as guanaco plasticity to adjust time allocation to local conditions. On the other hand, within‐group aggression rate increased with the number of adults in the group. Aggression rate was almost null within groups located in grasslands but was significantly higher in shrublands, regardless of predation risk, suggesting that the more heterogeneous distribution of shrubs increases the interference competition level. These results strengthen the notion of predation pressure and habitat structure as major determinants of the balance between costs and benefits of group living, and highlight the potential of individual behavioral patterns to make qualitative predictions about group‐size variation within territorial ungulates.  相似文献

Aphid-infested cereal trap plants were used to detect the effects of aphid sex pheromone components on aphid parasitoid activity in arable field margins. The presence of aphid sex pheromones significantly increased parasitization levels by aphid parasitoids on the plants. By placing plants alongside and at varying distances away from a pheromone-releasing vial, the technique was used to measure the distance over which a point source of aphid sex pheromone could increase parasitization levels. Pheromone-releasing vials significantly increased parasitization by the generalist parasitoid Praon volucre on plants adjacent to vials and on plants placed 20 cm away. When the distance between pheromone-releasing vials and aphid-infested plants was increased to 1 m, parasitization by P. volucre was increased only on the plant adjacent to the vial, whereas parasitization by the specialist parasitoid Aphidius rhopalosiphi was also increased on plants placed 1 m away. This indicates a possible difference between the parasitoids in their foraging behaviour in response to semiochemical cues during host selection. When the experiment was repeated with some trap plants placed 3 m away from the pheromone-releasing vial, parasitization was again concentrated on plants directly alongside the vial, but only P. volucre appeared to be active in the field at the time of this experiment, so the effect on A. rhopalosiphi could not be assessed. The results are encouraging for the prospects of using aphid sex pheromones to manipulate parasitoids in order to improve aphid population control.  相似文献

The effect of anoxic incubation of small slices of isolated rat hearts on respiration, internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, and mitochondrial ultrastructure was investigated. Anoxic incubation for 72 h induced apoptosis accompanied by internucleosomal DNA fragmentation and changes in respiration and mitochondrial ultrastructure. The mitochondrial population was characterized by morphological heterogeneity. In a significant part of the mitochondrial population there were signs of mitochondrial swelling and appearance of electron-dense mitochondria. Anoxia also induced the appearance of an atypical (and previously unknown) population of small electron-dense mitochondria. They were characterized by unusual localization inside electron-light mitochondria. Under anoxic conditions the inner mitochondrial membrane formed electron-dense ordered structures. All changes described here reflect two opposing processes occurring in mitochondria: apoptotic destruction and compensatory processes responsible for maintenance of mitochondria.  相似文献

This study assessed the effect of leaf age on construction cost (CC) in the mangrove species Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, and Rhizophora mangle growing in their natural habitat. Leaf osmolality values were species-specific, the highest in A. germinans (1 693 mmol kg–1) and the lowest in L. racemosa (1 270 mmol kg–1). In the three species, contents of chlorophyll (a+b) (Chla+b) and nitrogen (N) per unit of leaf area were maximal in adult leaves and tended to decline with age. Leaf mass to leaf area ratio (LMA) and ash content increased during leaf ageing. Similarly, as leaves aged, a significant increase in leaf construction cost per leaf area (CCa) was observed, while per leaf mass (CCm) it remained almost constant, suggesting a sustained production of leaf compounds as leaves became older. CC was positively correlated with LMA and heat of combustion (Hc) per leaf area, suggesting differences among species in the quantity and composition of expensive compounds. Leaf half lifetime (t0.5) showed contrasting values in the three mangrove species (60, 111, and 160 d in L. racemosa, R. mangle, and A. germinans, respectively). Overall, L. racemosa was the species with less expensive leaves to construct while leaves of A. germinans and R. mangle had the highest CCm and CCa, respectively. Leaf longevity was positively correlated with the ratio between CC and maximum photosynthetic rate (P max), clearly showing the existence of a balance between leaf costs and benefits.  相似文献

The effects of two entomopathogenic fungal endophytes, Beauveria bassiana and Purpureocillium lilacinum (formerly Paecilomyces lilacinus), were assessed on the reproduction of cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera:Aphididae), through in planta feeding trials. In replicate greenhouse and field trials, cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum) were inoculated as seed treatments with two concentrations of B. bassiana or P. lilacinum conidia. Positive colonization of cotton by the endophytes was confirmed through potato dextrose agar (PDA) media plating and PCR analysis. Inoculation and colonization of cotton by either B. bassiana or P. lilacinum negatively affected aphid reproduction over periods of seven and 14 days in a series of greenhouse trials. Field trials were conducted in the summers of 2012 and 2013 in which cotton plants inoculated as seed treatments with B. bassiana and P. lilacinum were exposed to cotton aphids for 14 days. There was a significant overall effect of endophyte treatment on the number of cotton aphids per plant. Plants inoculated with B. bassiana had significantly lower numbers of aphids across both years. The number of aphids on plants inoculated with P. lilacinum exhibited a similar, but non-significant, reduction in numbers relative to control plants. We also tested the pathogenicity of both P. lilacinum and B. bassiana strains used in the experiments against cotton aphids in a survival experiment where 60% and 57% of treated aphids, respectively, died from infection over seven days versus 10% mortality among control insects. Our results demonstrate (i) the successful establishment of P. lilacinum and B. bassiana as endophytes in cotton via seed inoculation, (ii) subsequent negative effects of the presence of both target endophytes on cotton aphid reproduction using whole plant assays, and (iii) that the P. lilacinum strain used is both endophytic and pathogenic to cotton aphids. Our results illustrate the potential of using these endophytes for the biological control of aphids and other herbivores under greenhouse and field conditions.  相似文献

We investigated the chemistry of Dufour’s gland secretions in Formica argentea Wheeler (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Formicinae), an understudied species common in the Western and Midwestern United States and Canada. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry reveals that undecane is the most prominent component in this ant’s Dufour’s gland extracts. Behavioral bioassays show that exposure to the compound significantly increases activity level in workers but does not act as a trail pheromone. This suggests an alarm function for undecane, which is consistent with other species of Formica. Taken with previous research, these findings provide evidence for evolutionary analyses of this character in this family of insects.  相似文献

The symmetry breaking observed in nature is fascinating. This symmetry breaking is observed in both human crowds and ant colonies. In such cases, when escaping from a closed space with two symmetrically located exits, one exit is used more often than the other. Group size and density have been reported as having no significant impact on symmetry breaking, and the alignment rule has been used to model symmetry breaking. Density usually plays important roles in collective behavior. However, density is not well-studied in symmetry breaking, which forms the major basis of this paper. The experiment described in this paper on an ant colony displays an increase then decrease of symmetry breaking versus ant density. This result suggests that a Vicsek-like model with an alignment rule may not be the correct model for escaping ants. Based on biological facts that ants use pheromones to communicate, rather than seeing how other individuals move, we propose a simple yet effective alarm pheromone model. The model results agree well with the experimental outcomes. As a measure, this paper redefines symmetry breaking as the collective asymmetry by deducing the random fluctuations. This research indicates that ants deposit and respond to the alarm pheromone, and the accumulation of this biased information sharing leads to symmetry breaking, which suggests true fundamental rules of collective escape behavior in ants.  相似文献

Two types of sex pheromone-emitting trap, a simple louvred trap and a commercially-produced wasp trap (Waspy®) designed or modified as delivery systems for entomopathogens, were tested using an isolate of the pathogen Verticillium lecanii . Their efficiencies for capturing winged autumn females (gynoparae) and males of Phorodon humuli in a hop garden and a plum orchard were compared with each other and with catches by yellow-painted water traps. Gynoparae rarely entered either type of pathogen dissemination trap. Males only entered traps that released (1 R , S ,4a R , 7 S , 7a S )-nepetalactol, the sex pheromone of P. humuli . In the hop garden, approximately five times as many males entered the modified Waspy® as entered the louvred traps, whereas in the plum orchard similar numbers of males were caught in both traps. On average, males visited the modified Waspy® trap for 34.1 ±7.9 (SE) min. Males spent about 50% of their time in the arena where the entomopathogen would normally be present and a further 20% of the time on the inside of the arena lid alongside the pheromone source. Out of a sample of 16 live aphids removed from a trap dispensing V. lecanii , 9 died from infection by the pathogen and 5 of the 16 initiated colonies of the fungus after they walked on a sterile agar plate for five minutes. None of the 15 aphids collected from traps without V. lecanii became infected or initiated colonies of the fungus on agar plates.  相似文献

We report the detection of cavitation events in corn (Zea mays) plants growing under field conditions in Greeley, CO. To our knowledge this study reports the first successful attempt to monitor continuously for long periods the cavitation events of a crop plant using acoustic detection techniques. Cavitation events occur in corn plants using acoustic detection techniques. Cavitation events occur in corn plants irrigated daily when the xylem pressure potentials fall below about −1.0 megapascals. In unirrigated corn we estimate that approximately half of all vessels cavitate on any one day when xylem pressure potentials fall below about −1.8 megapascals. We postulate that root pressure developed every night in irrigated and unirrigated corn is adequate to rejoin cavitated water columns.  相似文献

Under subzero degree conditions, free water contained in biological cells tends to freeze and then most living things die due to low temperatures. We examined the effect of a variable magnetic field on Drosophila under supercooled conditions (a state in which freezing is not caused even below the freezing point). Under such supercooled conditions with the magnetic field at 0°C for 72 hours, −4°C for 24 hours and −8°C for 1 hour, the Drosophila all survived, while all conversely died under the supercooled conditions without the magnetic field. This result indicates a possibility that the magnetic field can reduce cell damage caused due to low temperatures in living things.  相似文献

Heat-shock proteins (HSPs) are known to be expressed in plants experiencing high-temperature stress. We have examined the expression of class I cytoplasmic low molecular weight (LMW) HSPs and find that these HSPs also frequently accumulate in seeds, seed pods, and flowers during a normal growing season. We first examined the expression of class I cytoplasmic LMW HSPs by western blot analysis in a range of seed samples from both commercially grown and wild legumes. LMW HSPs were present in all seed samples, indicating that these HSPs are regularly expressed in these tissues. To examine more specifically conditions under which LMW HSPs were produced during an average growing season, additional studies of Medicago sativa were carried out during the fall season in Tucson, AZ. Plants were irrigated to avoid conditions of water stress, and canopy temperature was monitored throughout the study period. LMW HSP expression in leaves, flowers, and developing seed pods was analyzed by western blotting. Results show that in the field HSPs are frequently produced in flowers and seed pods, even in plants that show no HSP expression in leaves. Parallel greenhouse studies indicate that HSP expression in seeds is in part developmentally regulated. In total our data suggest a more widespread occurrence of HSPs in optimal growth environments and emphasize their potential role during reproduction.  相似文献

The embryos of maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines GS02, GS07, GS08, GS11 and GS15 were used as receptor materials to optimize the receptor system from the aspects of genotype, medium components and stress (PEG6000, mannitol, salt and low phosphorus). The results showed that GS07 had the highest induction rate (95.2%). Orthogonal test analysis showed that the best combination of medium components in induction was A2B3C1D3(2), namely, the concentration of 2, 4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) was 4 mg·mL-1, the concentration of L-Proline (L-Pro) was 0.8 mg·mL-1, and the concentration of silver nitrate (AgNO3) was 10 mg·mL-1 (or 5 mg·mL). Interestingly, we found that the optimal medium supplemented with 30 g·L-1 PEG6000 or 80 g·L-1 mannitol was suitable for antioxidant enzyme activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in GS07 callus. Exogenous 10 mmol·L-1 Ca2+ in the medium components with 100 mmol·L-1 sodium chloride (NaCl) could improve the activity of antioxidant enzymes in GS07 callus. Callus of GS07 could divide normally and grow well in medium components with 27 mg·L-1 KH2PO4. This study enhanced the adaptability of maize callus to stress and optimized the culture conditions.

The ability of a rhizobacterium to protect tomato plants against naturally occurring diseases as well as to improve crop yield under field conditions was studied. The rhizobacterium was introduced to the plants through seed microbiolization. Treatments consisted of different frequencies of fungicide (Chlorothalonyl) sprayings (5, 10 or 20 applications) of tomato plants grown from either microbiolized or non‐microbiolized seeds over a 90‐day evaluation period. Treatment of non‐microbiolized seeds without fungicide application was included as a control. The progress of the following three naturally occurring diseases was evaluated in the field and quantified: early blight (Alternaria solani), late blight (Phytophthora infestans), and septoria leaf spot (Septoria lycopersici). All treatments resulted in reduced disease severity when compared with the control treatment. Highest final fruit yields were found after treatment of plants grown from non‐microbiolized seeds and sprayed with fungicide 20 times over 90 days, and for treatment of plants from microbiolized seeds that received 10 fungicide spray applications, although all treatments increased yield over that obtained in the control treatment. The results demonstrate that combined rhizobacterial and chemical treatments in the field may permit reducing fungicidal spraying frequency while at the same time increasing crop yields.  相似文献

CO2 uptake and diffusion conductance of Valencia orange fruits(Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) were measured in the field duringthe growing season of 1977/78 to ascertain if, as in the leaf,stomata control photosynthesis and transpiration under changingenvironmental conditions. Measurements were made on 15 yearold trees grown in a sandy loam soil and receiving either adry or a wet treatment. Fruit diffusive conductance was measuredwith a modified water vapour diffusion conductance meter andgross photosynthesis was measured with a 14CO2 uptake meter.Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was measured witha quantum sensor. Fruits exposed to light assimilated CO2 ata rate which was 25–50% of that assimilated by leaves.The uptake was dependent on fruit size, PAR, chlorophyll content,and on diffusive conductance of the fruit epidermis. Epidermalconductance showed a diurnal trend which was similar in shapeto that of the leaf except in the late afternoon. Cuticularconductance of the fruit was calculated and ranged between 0.22and 0.30 mm s–1. It was speculated that the CO2 uptakeby the fruit could support the growth of flavedo cell layerswhen exposed to light. Dry soil caused an increase in the 14CO2uptake by fruit possibly caused by the increased potential areaof the stomatal opening per unit of fruit surface area.  相似文献

Many organisms use chemical cues from a variety of sources to mediate predator avoidance. Response to heterospecific alarm cues has been demonstrated for tadpoles within but not among taxa and alarm response behavior has seldom been examined under field conditions. This study examined the response of three sympatric amphibian larvae and predaceous larval Dytiscus sp. (diving beetle) to damage-release signals in natural ponds by using capture rates from treated funnel traps as an index of larval behavior. Hyla regilla (Pacific tree frog) tadpoles avoided traps treated with either crushed conspecifics or with Rana aurora (red-legged frog) tadpoles but the larger ranids and Ambystoma macrodactylum (long-toed salamander) did not respond to either treatment. H. regilla tadpoles were likely susceptible to any potential predators of ranid tadpoles in these ponds and this result is consistent with the hypothesis that a response to heterospecific alarm occurs in sympatric prey with shared predators.  相似文献
