Prolactin, which induced significant gain in body weight and in the weight of the cervical and abdominal fat deposits had no effect on daily total food intake in spotted munia. The hormone changed the feeding pattern from a modal type to almost continuous feeding, increased whole body oxygen consumption of the birds, and had no effect on total hopping index. Prolactin-induced fattening, therefore seems due to neither an increased caloric intake, nor a decreased metabolic expenditure, but probably reflects better utilization of food. 相似文献

The available data on maximal running speeds of mammals are presented, and the relationship between speed and body mass is considered. For all mammals ( n = 106), maximal running speed scales as (body mass)0–17 ; however, the largest mammals are not the fastest, and an optimal size with regards to running ability is suggested ( 119 kg). Maximal running speeds are, on the average, somewhat more than twice maximal aerobic speeds.
Within the Artiodactyla, Carnivora or Rodentia, maximal running speed is mass independent, in agreement with theoretical expectations for geometrically similar animals (Thompson, 1917; Hill, 1950). McMahon's (1975 b ) model for elastic similarity is therefore not supported by the available data on maximal running speeds, and there appears to be no necessary correspondence between scaling of limb bone proportions and running ability. 相似文献

Objective: This study used a precise weighing method to assess whether tooth loss was related to nutrient intake in elderly Japanese subjects. Material and methods: Fifty‐seven subjects aged 74 years were randomly selected from a longitudinal interdisciplinary study of ageing. Complete 3‐day food intake data were obtained by a precise weighing method. The dietary intakes of energy and nutrients were calculated based on the Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan (5th ed.). A clinical evaluation of the number of teeth present was carried out. Multiple regression standardised coefficients for each nutrient was estimated based on a continuous scale adjusted for gender, smoking habits, and educational level. After dividing the subjects into two groups according to the number of teeth present (0–19, 20+), the difference in the intake of nutrients and the amount of food consumed per day was evaluated. Results: The number of teeth present had a significant relationship with the intake of several nutrients. In particular, total protein, animal protein, sodium, vitamin D, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, niacin, and pantothenic acid were significantly associated with the number of teeth present and with the two groups (0–19, 20+). The intake of vegetables and fish, shellfish, and their products was significantly lower among subjects with fewer teeth. Conclusion: This study suggests that there was a significant relationship between nutrient intake, such as minerals and vitamins from food, and tooth loss. 相似文献

Life span of the second leaf of wheat(Triticum aestivum L., cv. Grana) plants was studied from day 8 to day 50 of plant age in a variant with nitrogen (+N) and in a variant in which
plant senescence was induced by the omission of nitrogen from the nutrient solution (−N). Seed protein was the sole source
of nitrogen for these plants. Specific leaf mass (SLM) in the −N variant, and specific leaf area (SLA), the mass of fresh
leaf, soluble protein content and total nitrogen content in the +N variant peaked by day 22 of plant age (that is by day 19
of leaf age). Dry matter content, leaf length and leaf area, and SLM in the +N variant peaked by day 29 of plant age (that
is by day 26 of leaf age). The ontogeny of the second leaf in the variant with enhanced senescence was shorter by at least
14 days. Plants from this variant showed typical symptoms of N deficiency, that is yellowing of leaves, tip burn, and lack
of tillering. However, the growth and biochemical characters studied did not indicate an earlier onset of the senescence of
the second leaf of −N plants. Both +N and −N variants reached their peaks (with the exception of an earlier peak by day 12
in case of total nitrogen content in the −N variant) on the same day of leaf age. Thus the first part of the leaf life span
from leaf growth initiation to full expansion was of the same length in both the control and N-def icient plants. The stage
of the proper senescence of the second leaf of −N plants was very short; the leaf completely died away within 7 days after

Meat intake is associated with the risk of colorectal cancer. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate interactions between meat intake and genetic variation in order to identify biological pathways involved in meat carcinogenesis. We performed a literature search of PubMed and Embase using “interaction”, “meat”, “polymorphisms”, and “colorectal cancer”, and data on meat–gene interactions were extracted. The studies were divided according to whether information on meat intake was collected prospectively or retrospectively. In prospective studies, interactions between meat intake and polymorphisms in PTGS2 (encoding COX-2), ABCB1, IL10, NFKB1, MSH3, XPC (Pint = 0.006, 0.01, 0.04, 0.03, 0.002, 0.01, respectively), but not IL1B, HMOX1, ABCC2, ABCG2, NR1I2 (encoding PXR), NR1H2 (encoding LXR), NAT1, NAT2, MSH6, or MLH1 in relation to CRC were found. Interaction between a polymorphism in XPC and meat was found in one prospective and one case–control study; however, the directions of the risk estimates were opposite. Thus, none of the findings were replicated. The results from this systematic review suggest that genetic variation in the inflammatory response and DNA repair pathway is involved in meat-related colorectal carcinogenesis, whereas no support for the involvement of heme and iron from meat or cooking mutagens was found. Further studies assessing interactions between meat intake and genetic variation in relation to CRC in large well-characterised prospective cohorts with relevant meat exposure are warranted.

Liana species have a variety of habitat preferences. Although morphological traits connected to resource acquisition may vary by habitat preference, few studies have investigated such associations in lianas. In previous work on temperate lianas, we observed (1) free standing leafy shoots and (2) climbing shoots that clung to host plants; we examined relationships between habitat preference and shoot production patterns in five liana species. Among the five species, two were more frequent at the forest edges (forest-edge species), and two were more common within the forests (forest-interior species). The proportion of climbing shoots in current-year shoot mass of young plants (3–8 m in height) was greater in the forest-edge species (45–60%) than in the forest-interior species (6–30%). In consequence, there was a greater leaf mass ratio in the total current-year shoots of forest-interior species. This, combined with a greater specific leaf area, endows forest-interior species with a leaf area per unit shoot mass double that of forest-edge species. Forest-edge species had longer individual climbing shoots whose length per unit stem mass was smaller than in forest-interior lianas. Extension efficiency, measured as the sum of the climbing stem length per unit current-year shoot mass, was thus similar between forest-edge and interior species. In conclusion, liana shoot production patterns were related to species habitat preferences. A trade-off between current potential productivity (leaves) and the ability to search for hosts and/or well-lit environments (climbing stems) may underpin these relationships. 相似文献

Evidence from rodent studies indicates that the beta-cell-derived neurohormone amylin exerts multiple effects on eating behavior, including reductions in meal size, intake of highly palatable foods, and stress-induced sucrose consumption. To assess the effect of amylin agonism on human eating behavior we conducted a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled, multicenter study investigating the effects of the amylin analog pramlintide on body weight, 24-h caloric intake, portion sizes, "fast food" intake, and perceived control of eating in 88 obese subjects. After a 2-day placebo lead-in, subjects self-administered pramlintide (180 microg) or placebo by subcutaneous injection 15 min before meals for 6 wk without concomitant lifestyle modifications. Compared with placebo, pramlintide treatment elicited significant mean reductions from baseline in body weight on day 44 (-2.1 +/- 0.3 vs. +0.1 +/- 0.4%, P < 0.001), 24-h caloric intake (-990 +/- 94 vs. -243 +/- 126 kcal on day 3, P < 0.0001; -680 +/- 86 vs. -191 +/- 161 kcal on day 43, P < 0.01), portion sizes, and caloric intake at a "fast food challenge" (-385 +/- 61 vs. -109 +/- 88 kcal on day 44, P < 0.05). Pramlintide treatment also improved perceived control of eating, as demonstrated by a 45% placebo-corrected reduction in binge eating scores (P < 0.01). The results of this translational research study confirm in humans various preclinical effects of amylin agonism, demonstrating that pramlintide-mediated weight loss in obese subjects is accompanied by sustained reductions in 24-h food intake, portion sizes, fast food intake, and binge eating tendencies. 相似文献

A mother, her adult son, four adult males and six adult females from a free-ranging group at Katsuyama were paired in a cage
in the sexual seasons from 1976 to 1980. The paired subjects were classified into the following three types: mother and son,
familiar pairs and unfamiliar pairs. The familiar pairs consisted of monkeys who had been in the Katsuyama group until about
six months before the experiment. The unfamiliar pairs consisted of monkeys who had not met each other at all or who had not
met each other for more than eight years before the experiment. Serial mounts which terminated with ejaculation occurred in
nine of ten unfamiliar pairs, four of five familiar pairs, but there were none between the son and mother. The son and mother
did not appear to be sexually aroused between themselves, although they were sexually active to other partners. However, on
rare occasions, the son mounted singly on the mother, and on one occasion he ejaculated. Their interaction did not change

The feeding process of Japanese monkeys on soy beans which were scattered over a sandy beach on Koshima islet was studied.
Younger monkeys were able to pick up more beans when 8 kg of beans were divided and given two times (“two times feeding”)
than when the whole amount (8 kg) of beans was given at one time (“one time feeding”). The effect of saturation of the food
intake capacity in younger monkeys at the first feeding in “two times feeding” did not appear at the second feeding one hour
later. The minutely intake of soy beans (feeding speed) for each age class was analyzed. The decline of feeding speed in adult
females after the peak in “one time feeding” was not related to the decline in density of beans on the ground, and this decline
was caused by saturation of their food intake capacity.
Adult females were divided into four classes according to their dominance rank order: high, lower-high, higher-low, and low
classes. The total amount of intake in “one time feeding” was far larger in the high class than in any of the other classes.
The total amount of feeding in the first feeding of “two times feeding” increased in accordance with rise in the dominance
rank class, and there was no relation to rank and total feeding amount in the second feeding of “two times feeding.” Differences
existed in the process of feeding between the rank classes. The feeding speed of the low class was as high as that of the
high class on the curve of minutely intake, while the low class stopped feeding much earlier than the high class. The lower-high
class displayed a low feeding speed, and stopped feeding the latest. The order of the duration to stay and to feed in the
feeding area was lower-high > high > higher-low > low, and this order did not change under the three different feeding conditions,
“one time feeding,” and the first and second feedings of “two times feeding.” Adolescent females tended to stay the longest
duration in the feeding area among all age classes. Both the lower-high class females and adolescent females had an unstable
social status in the Koshima group, and their social status affected their feeding behaviors. The feeding behaviors were similar
in attitude depending on social status, and are considered to be maintained for a fairly long time.
The feeding strategy of the lower-high class, in staying a longer duration in the artificial feeding area, and departing later,
may be effective under the artificial feeding conditions, but it may be a bad strategy in a natural habitat where the food
is not so clumped as in artificial feeding, and where choice of other food patches is possible. The above results agree well
with previous reports for the Koshima group, indicating that the rank of the lower-high class females was unstable (Mori et al., 1989), and that their reproductive success was low (Watanabe et al., 1992). 相似文献

Phylogenetic incongruence between nuclear and mitochondrial markers in the Asian colobines and the evolution of the langurs and leaf monkeys 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Evidence of incongruence between mitochondrial and nuclear gene trees is now becoming documented with increasing frequency. Among the Old World monkeys, this discordance has been well demonstrated in the Cercopithecinae, but has not yet been investigated in the Colobinae. The mitochondrial relationships between the colobine genera have recently been clarified and cluster Presbytis and Trachypithecus as sister taxa to the exclusion of Semnopithecus. This is incongruent with previous morphological hypotheses that suggest the latter two are sister taxa, and perhaps even congeneric. In addition to analyzing a previously published 10,896 bp mitochondrial dataset, we sequenced and analyzed a 4297 bp fragment of the X-chromosome in order to test the competing mitochondrial and morphological phylogenetic hypotheses. The results from the mitochondrial dataset again support a Presbytis+Trachypithecus group while the X-chromosomal dataset supported a Semnopithecus+Trachypithecus group. A Shimodaira-Hasegawa test performed on both datasets indicates that the mitochondrial and X-chromosomal trees are significantly better at explaining their respective datasets than alternative topologies (p<0.05). We suggest that differential lineage sorting or ancient hybridization may be the cause of this strong discordance between the mitochondrial and X-chromosomal markers in these taxa. 相似文献

Blood glucose, gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and gastrin secretions were measured over a three-hour period following the ingestion by normal subjects of a mixed meal with two different caloric levels (1055 Kcal and 1192 Kcal). No VIP secretion was observed after either meal. Gastrin release was not modified by the increase of caloric intake (mainly carbohydrates and lipids), whereas GIP secretion was significantly more important after the meal with the highest caloric value (peak at 30 mn: vs. and integrated response vs. ). This difference could not be attributed to glucose since the blood glucose levels were not significantly different. It is more probably related to the total amount of ingested food. This suggests the existence of rapid mechanisms of adaptation to the incoming load of the GIP-producing cells. 相似文献

AbstractNeural activity was recorded in the secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) of macaque monkeys during a simple feeding task. Around the border between the representations of the hand and face in SII, we found neurons that became active during both retrieving with the hand and eating; 59% had receptive fields (RFs) in the hand/face and the remaining 41% had no RFs. Neurons that responded to touching objects were rarely found. This suggests their sensorimotor function rather than tactile object recognition. 相似文献

Significant correlations (P<0.05) between meals and preceding intervals were shown more often by Japanese quail when fed on diluted mash (40% cellulose) than with undiluted mash or pellets. They showed significant correlations between meals and succeeding intervals with about the same frequency on all three foods. Most of the correlation coefficients were low, but experiments in which interval length and meal size were manipulated artificially confirmed that close relationships between meals and intervals can occur, and appear to verify the existence of short-term hunger and satiety mechanisms. Possible explanations for the low correlation coefficients shown by several bird species are discussed, and it is concluded that meal-eating is controlled by a very flexible system. There is no evidence that the timing of meals depends on fixed set points, and it is suggested instead that degrees of hunger and satiety may determine the probabilities of a meal starting or stopping, such a system being associated with emptying and filling of parts of the digestive tract. 相似文献
