Objective: This study investigated ethnic and sex differences in the distribution of fat during childhood and adolescence. Design and Methods : A cross‐sectional sample (n = 382), aged 5–18 years, included African American males (n = 84), White males (n = 96), African American females (n = 118), and White females (n = 84). Measures for total body fat (TBF) mass and abdominal adipose tissue (total volume and L4‐L5 cross‐sectional area) for both subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) depots were assessed by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry and magnetic resonance image, respectively. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs) were used to determine ethnic and sex differences in TBF (adjusted for age) and ethnic and sex differences in SAT and VAT (adjusted for both age and TBF). Results: Age‐adjusted TBF was greater in African Americans (P = 0.017) and females (P < 0.0001) compared with Whites and males, respectively. In age‐ and TBF‐adjusted ANCOVAs, no differences were found in the SAT. The VAT volume was, however, greater in Whites (P < 0.0001) and males (P < 0.0001) compared with African Americans and females, respectively. Similar patterns were observed in SAT and VAT area at L4‐L5. Conclusions: The demonstrated ethnic and sex differences are important confounders in the prevalence of obesity and in the assignment of disease risk in children and adolescents.  相似文献

Glycaemic control deteriorates frequently in adolescents with diabetes. There is a considerable body of work on the effect of psychological aspects of management in this age group, but few randomized controlled trials of the effect of specific behavioural therapy and lifestyle modification on the improvement of glycaemic control. Of recent interest have been the observations from the Hvid?re Study Group on cross-cultural differences in glycaemic control. The average glycosylated haemoglobin in 22 centres, across 18 countries, varied in young people, with HbA1c levels ranging from 7.6 to 10.2%. No obvious differences in management were identified in this survey that could account for the disparities in glycaemic control. Data from the Scottish Study Group demonstrated similar variation in average glycaemic control in centres across a single culture. Using the qualitative methodology of anthropological research, some specific factors were identified that appear to influence young people's response to diabetes management and strategies employed by health professionals in their advice and care of the diabetes, particularly in relation to intensive insulin regimens. The main cultural factors influencing glycaemic control appear to be communication, reciprocal support between young people and professional heart carers and family structure within an individualistic, as against an egalitarian, society. Shared beliefs about teenage risk behaviour together with the medicalization of adolescence within medical culture also appears to be highly influential. The aim of this educational discussion group was to explore how a variety of health care professionals from distinctive cultures approach diabetes care delivery in this age group. The specific success and difficulties in different cultures in managing the young person with diabetes were investigated. Also discussed was how qualitative research methodology may generate further research in this area.  相似文献

A total of 1,167 stool specimens collected from 0.6-6 years old patients attending King Abdel Aziz University Hospital (KAUH) in Riyadh, were examined for intestinal parasites. Of these 243 (20.8%) were positive. Giardia lamblia (13.5) and Enterobius vermicularis (4.2%), were the commonest parasites found. Other parasites present include Ascaris lumbricoides, Entamoeba histolytica and Hymenolepis nana. Abdominal pain (38.6%) and diarrhoea (27.6%) were the most common causes of referral presented among both males and females examined groups. Out of 211 patients positive for different parasites and showing different causes of referral, 45.5% were accompanied with abdominal pain and 22.3% having pruritus ani, while the percentage of patients having diarrhoea and positive for different parasites (9.5%) are less. It has been concluded that diarrhoea is not a major sign of parasitic infestation in 0.6-6 years old age group. Other causes of referral include, loss of appetite, underweight and failure to thrive which are mainly associated with Giardia lamblia infection.  相似文献

The ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) during graded exercise was defined as the oxygen uptake (VO2) immediately below the exercise intensity at which pulmonary ventilation increased disproportionally relative to VO2. Since VAT is considered to be a sensitive and noninvasive measure for evaluating cardiorespiratory endurance performance, the purpose of the present study was to determine normal values in children. We examined 257 healthy children (140 boys and 117 girls) varying in age from 5.7 to 18.5 years, during treadmill exercise. The data were analyzed in relation to sex and age. In boys the lowest VO2max (ml X min-1 X kg-1) was found in the youngest age group (5-6 year). In girls, on the other hand, no significant increase occurred with age. For VAT, expressed as ml O2 X min-1 X kg-1 or as a percent of VO2max, a significant decrease was found in boys and girls with age. This suggests an increase in lactacid anaerobic capacity during growth. In contrast to observations in adults, only low correlations were found between VO2max and VAT (r = 0.28 in boys and r = 0.52 in girls), which suggests that the development of the underlying physiological mechanism does not occur at the same rate in growing children. These data provide normal values for VAT that can be used for clinical exercise testing in the pediatric age group.  相似文献

Background: Although the BMI is widely used as a measure of adiposity, it is a measure of excess weight, and its association with body fatness may differ across racial or ethnic groups. Objective: To determine whether differences in body fatness between white, black, Hispanic, and Asian children vary by BMI‐for‐age, and whether the accuracy of overweight (BMI‐for‐age ≥ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 95th percentile) as an indicator of excess adiposity varies by race/ethnicity. Methods and Procedures: Total body dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) provided estimates of %body fat among 1,104 healthy 5‐ to 18‐year‐olds. Results: At equivalent levels of BMI‐for‐age, black children had less (mean, 3%) body fatness than white children, and Asian girls had slightly higher (1%) levels of %body fat than white girls. These differences, however, varied by BMI‐for‐age, with the excess body fatness of Asians evident only among relatively thin children. The ability of overweight to identify girls with excess body fatness also varied by race/ethnicity. Of the girls with excess body fatness, 89% (24/27) of black girls, but only 50% (8/16) of Asian girls, were overweight (P = 0.03). Furthermore, the proportion of overweight girls who had excess body fatness varied from 62% (8/13) among Asians to 100% (13/13) among whites. Discussion: There are racial or ethnic differences in body fatness among children, but these differences vary by BMI‐for‐age. If race/ethnicity differences in body fatness among adults also vary by BMI, it may be difficult to develop race‐specific BMI cut points to identify equivalent levels of %body fat.  相似文献

Maternal modification of offspring sex in birds has strong fitness consequences, however the mechanisms by which female birds can bias sex of their progeny in close concordance with the environment of breeding are not known. In recently established populations of house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), breeding females lay a sex-biased sequence of eggs when ambient temperature causes early onset of incubation. We studied the mechanisms behind close association of incubation and sex-determination strategies in this species and discovered that pre-ovulation oocytes that produce males and females differed strongly in the temporal patterns of proliferation and growth. In turn, sex-specific exposure of oocytes to maternal secretion of prolactin and androgens produced distinct accumulation of maternal steroids in oocyte yolks in relation to oocyte proliferation order. These findings suggest that sex difference in oocyte growth and egg-laying sequence is an adaptive outcome of hormonal constraints imposed by the overlap of early incubation and oogenesis in this population, and that the close integration of maternal incubation, oocytes' sex-determination and growth might be under control of the same hormonal mechanism. We further document that population establishment and the evolution of these maternal strategies is facilitated by their strong effects on female and offspring fitness in a recently established part of the species range.  相似文献

Aluminum was determined in serum samples obtained from 533 Saudi female pupils aged 6–8 years who attended primary public school in Riyadh City, Capital of Saudi Arabia. The aluminum mean value was 23.21 ± 15.25 g 1–1 in the range of 5.98–206.93 g 1–1. Serum aluminum levels of pupils attending the Northern school area were higher than levels found in pupils from other school areas (Southern, Eastern and Central). Renal variables had no correlation with serum aluminum. On the other hand, a significant positive correlation was found between serum aluminium above 49.2 g 1–1 and urea (r = 0.6, P < 0.002). Although 53% of the screened schools had aluminum in water above the European Union (EU) acceptable limit of 50 g 1–1, there were no differences in aluminum in water between the four different school areas in Riyadh. Factors such as drinking water, diet and the use of aluminum utensils may have contributed to this result. As there is a bulk of literature which highlights the adverse developmental effects of aluminum on children and infants, it would be advantageous to establish regular aluminum monitoring.  相似文献

Models of physiological systems facilitate rational experimental design, inference, and prediction. A recent construct of regulated growth hormone (GH) secretion interlinks the actions of GH-releasing hormone (GHRH), somatostatin (SRIF), and GH secretagogues (GHS) with GH feedback in the rat (Farhy LS, Veldhuis JD. Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol 288: R1649-R1663, 2005). In contrast, no comparable formalism exists to explicate GH dynamics in any other species. The present analyses explore whether a unifying model structure can represent species- and sex-defined distinctions in the human and rodent. The consensus principle that GHRH and GHS synergize in vivo but not in vitro was explicable by assuming that GHS 1) evokes GHRH release from the brain, 2) opposes inhibition by SRIF both in the hypothalamus and on the pituitary gland, and 3) stimulates pituitary GH release directly and additively with GHRH. The gender-selective principle that GH pulses are larger and more irregular in women than men was conferrable by way of 4) higher GHRH potency and 5) greater GHS efficacy. The overall construct predicts GHRH/GHS synergy in the human only in the presence of SRIF when the brain-pituitary nexus is intact, larger and more irregular GH pulses in women, and observed gender differences in feedback by GH and the single and paired actions of GHRH, GHS, and SRIF. The proposed model platform should enhance the framing and interpretation of novel clinical hypotheses and create a basis for interspecies generalization of GH-axis regulation.  相似文献

The study was designed to examine the gender-related differences in maximum mechanical power output in various short-burst activities during growth. The subject sample consisted of four subgroups: 9 boys (14.11 +/- 0.6 yr), 9 boys (10.67 +/- 0.71 yr), 7 girls (14.29 +/- 0.49 yr), 7 girls (10.57 +/- 0.54 yr). We measured peak power (PP), mean power (MP), fatigue index (FI) during 30-s WAnT, squat jump height (SJH) and power (SJP), and counter movement jump height (CMJH) and power (CMJP), maximum speed over 20-metre distance (S20). Lactation concentration was measured in the 3rd and 5th minutes after the WAnT Ratio normalisation and ANCOVA were used to remove the influence of the differences in muscle (MM) and body mass (BM). Male adolescents had higher absolute values of PP (P < 0.05), MP (P < 0.05) than female. Ratio normalisation showed that boys had higher PP/BM (P < 0.05), PP/MM (P < 0.05), MP/BM (P < 0.05), MP/MM (P < 0.06) than girls. The ANCOVA adjustment for MM showed differences between genders in PP (P < 0.001), MP (P < 0.001), SJH (P < 0.05), SJP (P < 0.05) and CMJP (P < 0.001), whereas the ANCOVA adjustment for BM showed differences only in PP (P < 0.001), MP (P < 0.001). Prepubertal boys had higher absolute values only in SJP (P < 0.05). We concluded that variations in body composition could not be the only key to gender-related differences in power output in short-burst activities.  相似文献

Sex differences in aging and longevity have been widely observed, with females consistently outliving males across human populations. However, the mechanisms driving these disparities remain poorly understood. In this study, we explored the influence of post-pubertal testicular effects on sex differences in aging by prepubertally castrating genetically heterogeneous (UM-HET3) mice, a unique mouse model that emulates human sex differences in age-related mortality. Prepubertal castration eliminated the longevity disparity between sexes by reducing the elevated early- to mid-life mortality rate observed in males and extending their median lifespan to match that of females. Additionally, castration extended the duration of body weight growth and attenuated the inverse correlation between early-age body weight and lifespan in males, aligning their growth trajectories with those of females. Our findings suggest that post-pubertal testicular actions in genetically diverse mice are primarily responsible for sex differences in longevity as well as growth trajectories. These findings offer a foundation for further investigation into the fundamental mechanisms driving sex-specific aging patterns and the development of potential pro-longevity interventions.  相似文献

Studies involving substantially lengthy rat surgeries require extended anesthesia periods and often involve use of sodium pentobarbital (PENT). Results of previous experiments from our laboratory and elsewhere suggest that the duration of anesthesia and the need for anesthetic supplementation may differ between male and female rats. In the study reported here, we induced anesthesia in male and female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 10 for each sex), using a three-step procedure: brief induction with 5% isoflurane inhalation, PENT (50 mg/kg of body weight, i.p.), combined with 50 mg of PENT/kg given intragastrically. Adequate anesthesia depth was confirmed by absence of a response to a toe pinch. Plasma PENT concentration was measured at sequential 20-min periods and was found, on average, to be lower (P = 0.03) in male (13.28 +/- 1.13 microg/ml) than in female (20.27 +/- 0.66 microg/ml) rats, and decreased more rapidly (P = 0.003) in male rats. Distribution to a fractionally greater lean body mass and more rapid metabolism in males may account for these differences and explain the need for anesthetic supplementation in male, but not female rats.  相似文献

Based on the data of 203 male and 179 female schoolchildren from Eastern Austria (Burgenland), aged between 6 and 10 years, sex typical differences in body composition (absolute and relative body fat, lean body mass) and weight status were analyzed. Body composition analyses were carried out by means of BIA method, weight status was estimated using BMI percentiles (BMI > 90th percentile defined overweight, BMI > 97th percentile defined obesity). Statistically significant sex differences were found for all body composition parameters, girls exhibited a significantly higher amount of absolute and relative body fat, whereas their male counterparts exhibited a significantly higher amount of lean body mass. Regarding weight status, no statistically significant sex differences were observable, however, a higher amount of girls could be classified as overweight or obese. Evolutionary and sociocultural explanations for these observations are discussed.  相似文献
