The effects of temperature on the development and survival of Shijimiaeoides divinus barine were examined in the laboratory in 2008. The eggs and larvae were reared at temperatures of 15, 17.5, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C with a long-day photoperiod of 16 h light : 8 h dark (16L : 8D). The highest hatchability of eggs was 88.0% at 20°C, but hatchability at high temperatures of 30 and 35°C was 30 and 0%, respectively. The lowest and highest survival rates from the first to third instar were 18.8% at 15°C and 76.9% at 20°C. Few deaths were observed after the fourth instar. The shortest developmental periods of the eggs and larvae were 4.0 and 15.8 days at 30°C, and the durations of the egg and larval stages increased significantly as the temperature decreased. The developmental zero and thermal constants were 9.6°C and 82.6 degree–days for the egg stage, and 10.7°C and 306.8 degree–days for the larval stage. The developmental period of the natural population of S. divinus barine in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture was calculated using the developmental zero, thermal constants and Azumino City temperature data.

Abstract
No immature stages of Culex annulirostris were found during field sampling in 1979–1980 when the average water temperature was < 17 °C; they reappeared when the average water temperature was 19 °C and reached the peak density (mean 107 immatures/cylinder) at 26.5 °C.
The effect of 6 temperatures (15–40°C) on egg hatching, development and survival of the immature stages of Cx annulirostris in the laboratory showed that at 15 and 40°C, eggs failed to hatch and larvae died in the first instars. The optimum temperatures for egg hatching and the survival of immature stages were 25 and 30°C. At these temperatures, 85 and 82% respectively of egg rafts hatched, the mean number of larvae per raft was 258 ± 9.8 and 260 ± 11.4 with immature survival of 83.5 and 79.0% respectively. Mean time to hatch at 20–35°C ranged from 1.2 d (35°C) to 2.9 d (20 °C). Developmental times from first instar to adult ranged from 7.1 d (35 °C) to 25.2 d (20 °C). The threshold for development of the immatures was 15.6 ± 2.5°C and the thermal constant was 142.9 ± 26.5 day—degrees (incubation temperatures 20–35°C). At less suitable temperatures of 20 and 35 °C, hatching (57.5 and 45%), number larvae per raft (mean 139.8 ± 9.8 and 102.6 ± 14.2) and survival were low.

1 Development and survivorship of Coelophora inaequalis (F.) were evaluated in the laboratory on the brown citrus aphid, Toxoptera citricida (Kirkaldy) at 20 and 25 °C. Coelophora inaequalis could complete its life cycle feeding on T. citricida at these two temperatures. The developmental period from egg to adult was significantly longer at 20 °C (24.7 d) than at 25 °C (15.9 d). The survivorship of combined immature stages were higher at 25 °C (39.2%) than at 20 °C (34.3%). 2 The effects of prey densities (4–64 aphids per leaf disk) on the functional responses of C. inaequalis fourth‐instar larvae and female adults were investigated using grapefruit leaf disks over a 24‐h period at 25 °C and a photoperiod of LD 14 : 10 h. Logistic regression analyses indicated that fourth‐instar larvae and adults exhibited a type II functional response to aphid density. Fourth‐instar larvae had a higher search rate (0.1305) than C. inaequalis female adults (0.0989). The handling time of fourth‐instar larvae (30.4 min) was significantly longer than that of female adults (5.8 min). Collectively, C. inaequalis appears to be a promising biological control agent of T. citricida in the citrus groves.

Nephaspis oculatus (Blatchley) is a predator of whiteflies including Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and B. argentifolii Bellows and Perring. The usefulness of this and other coccinellid predators of whiteflies could be improved by better information on responses to different temperatures experienced in the field. We reared N. oculatus from egg to adult in incubators at six constant temperatures and observed a linear relationship between developmental time and temperature for all preimaginal lifestages through all but the highest temperatures (33°C). Four larval instars were observed, although a significant proportion of third instar larvae molted directly to the pupal stage at 29°C and above. Complete life table data were obtained at all temperatures except 33°C. Survivorship was greatest over all immature stages at 26°C and finite and intrinsic rates of increase were highest at this temperature. Although 26°C appeared to be the optimum temperature for population growth, estimated rates of increase at all temperatures tested above 20°C were within 75% of the maximum, indicating that the beetle can perform well within the temperature range usually found in greenhouses.

The yellow ladybeetle, Illeis koebelei Timberlake, is a potential biological agent for powdery mildew. The objective of this study was to construct development and oviposition models of I. koebelei. Development experiment was conducted at eight temperatures ranging from 15.4 to 39.5?°C. Development rates were well fitted with linear and nonlinear models. Lower developmental thresholds for egg, first instar, second instar, third instar, and fourth instar larva, pre-pupa, pupa, and total immature stage were estimated to be 3.6, 12.7, 12.1, 11.3, 11.3, 12.8, 14.7, and 14.2?°C, respectively. Their respective thermal requirements in degree days (DD) were 86.6, 16.0, 22.5, 30.2, 49.3, 14.5, 43.8 and 217.4, respectively. Survivorship was the highest at 25.1?°C for immatures. Oviposition experiment was conducted at nine temperatures, ranging from 15.4 to 35.3?°C. Mean fecundity ranged from 18.6 eggs at 29.3?°C to 205.3 eggs at 20.3?°C. It was well described by extreme value function. Adult survival and cumulative oviposition rates of I. koebelei were fitted to a sigmoid function and a two-parameter Weibull function, respectively. Findings of this study provide basic information for ecology of I. koebelei. They can be used to optimize environmental conditions for mass-rearing and shipping, comparing optimal occurrence conditions between I. koebelei and powdery mildew, and forecasting phenology and population dynamics of I. koebelei in the fields.

Abstract The effect of temperature on rate of development and survival of the immature stages of a subtropical population of the black jezebel, Delias nigrina , was studied under laboratory conditions at a range of constant temperatures. Mean developmental times from first-instar larva to adult varied from 29 days at 27°C to 52 days at 19°C; the development threshold temperature and thermal constant were estimated to be 9°C and 494 degree-days, respectively. Larval developmental rates reached physiological maximum at the higher temperatures tested (25−27°C). Pupal development, by contrast, was not affected in the same way as larvae by higher temperature. Survival of the immature stages varied inversely with temperature: survival was highest at 19°C and significantly reduced at 27°C. Mortality at the higher temperature was attributable mainly to final-instar larvae and pupae. These findings indicate that, compared with other tropical pierids that have been studied, D. nigrina has: (i) a comparatively low temperature threshold; (ii) a slow rate of development; and (iii) a poor tolerance to moderately high temperatures. Physiologically, these features are more characteristic of a temperate butterfly than a tropical one. This physiological response appears to be reflected by the temperate nature of the genus as a whole, which may be related to its period of origin and evolution during past climatic events.

Development and survival of the immature stages of an aphidophagous ladybeetle, Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) was investigated at five constant temperatures, viz. 20, 25, 27, 30 and 35°C, using Aphis gossypii Glover as prey. Developmental period of all the life stages were significantly affected with change in constant temperature and developmental rate increased with increase in temperature. Theoretical lower thermal threshold for complete development and thermal constant was 10.39°C and 465.11 Day‐degrees, respectively. Of the various life stages, first instar larvae were most susceptible to mortality at temperatures between 20 and 30°C, whilst pre‐pupae suffered least mortality. Egg‐mortality was maximum at 35°C. Female biased sex ratios were obtained at all five temperatures tested with higher proportion of females at the extremes of temperature, thus suggesting that females are more thermal‐tolerant. Lowest mortality of immature stages with maximum larval survival and adult emergence was recorded at 27°C, while reverse was the case at 35°C. Thus, 27°C may be considered best for the laboratory rearing of P. dissecta.

The effects of group size on the survival and development of young larvae of Pryeria sinicaMoore were investigated by laboratory and field experiments. Under laboratory conditions, about 20% of isolated larvae died of unsuccessful feeding in the first instar, however, larvae survived successfully in aggregations of four or more individuals. In the field, larvae emerge in early spring and wait for new leaves to open before feeding. In this period, the larger the group size of hatchlings the survival rate became higher. The nest-web spun by hatchlings was considered to play an important role in protecting them from desiccation. In the period that larvae began to feed on leaves, more than 36 larvae are necessary to aggregate for the successful establishment of feeding groups. The nest-web played an important role also in the establishment of feeding group. However, the natural group size of the first instar larvae was larger than the minimum group size to spin a sound nest-web in the field experiment. On the other hand, in later stage, larvae in a large group did not have an excess advantage in survival or developmental rate over larvae in a small group. It was found that the experiments on survival and developmental rates could not explain the reason that this species maintain large compact groups in the most part of larval period.

The effect of temperature on predation by Ilione albiseta (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) on Lymnaea peregra was investigated at 14°, 17°, 20°, 23° and 26°C. The mean dry weight of snail tissue (Lymnaea peregra) attacked and consumed per day by first and second instar I. albiseta larvae was highest at 20°C while for third instar and total larval duration period it was greatest at 23°C. The mean number of snails killed per day during the third instar was also highest at 23°C. The total amount of snail tissue consumed by I. albiseta larvae increased significantly from first to second instar and from second to third instar at each constant temperature. Mean survival period of unfed first instar larvae decreased from 28.4 days at 14°C to 11 days at 26°C and the mean length of the second instar cephalopharyngeal skeleton decreased with increasing temperatures. As temperature increased the rate of consumption of oxygen (dissolved in water) by first and third instar larvae rose.

This paper is concerned with the bionomics and demography of Pediculaster fletchmanni Wicht (Acari: Siteroptidae) under controlled conditions (20 ± l, 22 ± 1 and 25 ± 1℃, 70% ± 5% relative humidity and a photoperiod of 16L : 8D hours). Glass Petri dishes inoculated with Trichoderma sp. mycelia were used as substrate and food source. The mean developmental time of the egg and the active larva did not differ significantly at the various constant temperatures, but these periods were significantly different for the quiescent larval stage. The preoviposition period ranged from 2.3 to 2.8 days, the ovipositional period increased with temperature increase, and all females died immediately after oviposition. The development of active larvae was the fastest of all life stages. The developmental threshold ranged between 5.25-14.22℃ the highest value being observed for the quiescent larval development. For immature development required 89.29 degree-days. Values of rm (intrinsic rate of increase) were 0.229, 0.398 and 0.386 for 20, 22 and 25℃ respectively. Finite rates of increase (λ) increased along with increasing temperature from 20-25℃ consequently the population doubling time (D) and mean generation time (T) showed significant differences with increasing temperature.

Insects can increase their resistance to cold stress by prior exposure to non-lethal cold temperatures. Here, we investigated the supercooling capacity and survival of eggs, 3rd and 5th instar larvae, and pupae of Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) during CA, and responses to various pre-treatment protocols, including constant temperatures, thermoperiods, and RCH, RHH, RCH + RHH and RHH + RCH combined with thermoperiods. Only acclimated eggs demonstrated a significant decrease in SCP, from −20.7 ± 0.3 to −22.9 ± 0.3 °C, among all experimental groups compared to non-acclimated stages. Survival increased by 17.5% for eggs, 40.0% and 13.3% for 3rd and 5th instar larvae, and by 20.0% for pupae after CA. Compared to controls, survival of eggs under the conditions of thermoperiod (5:15 °C), thermoperiod (5:15 °C) + RHH, and thermoperiod (5:15, 10:20, and 15:25 °C) + RCH significantly increased. In addition, survival of 3rd and 5th instar larvae and pupae increased under the conditions of thermoperiod (5:15 °C) and thermoperiod (5:15 °C) + RCH, possibly due to the induction of heat shock proteins or cryoprotectants. However, the pre-treatments of thermoperiod + RCH + RHH and thermoperiod + RHH + RCH did not significantly enhance survival of any developmental stage. These adaptive responses may allow S. exigua to enhance supercooling capacity and survival in response to seasonal or unexpected diurnal decreases in environmental temperatures.

Developmental and survival rates of the locally important diaspidid pest, Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Signoret) reared on Solanum tuberosum L . tubers were examined under light and dark conditions; humidities of 33, 53, 62 and 75% relative humidity (RH); varying population densities; constant temperatures in the range of 20 to 30oC and at cycling temperatures of 12 h at 14°C and 12 h at 30°C. Developmental rate was slightly lower under constant light conditions but mortality was higher in the dark, particularly amongst the males. At 26°C, there were no differences in developmental rate in relation to the various humidity levels. However, survival was significantly lower at 33% RH, with females suffering higher mortality than males. Population density was found to have no effect on developmental rate or size of the females. Overall mortality increased in line with population density although the result was poorly correlated. Within the range 20-28°C developmental rate increased with rising temperature but decreased at 30°C. Thermal summation and polynomial regression data show a theoretical lower thermal threshold for development of 12.47°C. The thermal constant was 541.7 degree days. Survival was lowest at 20°C and 30°C and highest at temperatures in the median range and under cycling conditions. Male survival was significantly higher than that of the females at 30°C and under the cycling regime of 14/30°C. The results suggest that the optimum conditions for rearing A. cyanophylli on potatoes would be at temperatures in the range 24-26°C and humidities of 55-65% RH.

A sustainable colony allowed investigations into attachment substrates, diet and temperature in the development of the immature stages of Cq. linealis and its local congener Cq. xanthogaster. As immatures, these mosquitoes attach to submerged plants for respiration, and various field‐collected and laboratory‐raised plants were compared with non‐living substrates. Hydroponically‐grown wheat plant seedlings provided the most suitable attachment substrate. Development and survival of immatures to eclosion were investigated with three types and three quantities of a standardized diet. Development and survival at rearing temperatures between 10° and 30° C were also investigated. Diet type appeared to have little influence on development. However, at the lowest diet quantity, development to pupation was significantly reduced while the highest diet quantity impacted on the eclosion of pupae. Mean duration of immature development for Cq. linealis increased as temperature decreased. Time from 1st instar to median eclosion did not differ significantly between 23° C (6.0 weeks) and 25° C (5.3 weeks), although it was 10 weeks at 20° C, and 30° C was lethal. For Cq. xanthogaster, similarly, mean duration of immature development increased as temperature decreased, with development time from 1st instar to median eclosion significantly longer at 20° C (7.5 weeks) compared to 23° C (5.0 weeks) and 30° C (4.0 weeks).

Effects of buprofezin (Applaud), a chitin synthesis inhibitor, on survival and development of eggs, three instars, and pupae of Chrysoperla rufilabris (Burmeister) were determined in the laboratory. Buprofezin at three tested concentrations (100, 500, and 1,000 mg [AI]/liter) did not affect the viability and development of eggs when the eggs were treated, or third instars and pupae when those stages were treated. Although the degree of effects by buprofezin on larvae varied with instar, buprofezin at the higher concentrations (500 and 1,000 mg [AI]/liter) reduced survival rates 17-47% and prolonged the overall development from first instars to adult emergence by 2 or 3 d when first instars were treated, indicating that the first instar is the most vulnerable stage. When second instars were treated, the survival of C. rufilabris from second instars to pupae was not significantly affected. However, the developmental time from second instar to adult emergence was longer in the treatments with the highest concentration (1,000 mg [AI]/liter) than that with the lowest concentration (100 mg [AI]/liter). The compatibility of buprofezin with natural enemies in integrated pest management programs is discussed.

Temperature and food quality can both influence growth rates, consumption rates, utilization efficiencies and developmental time of herbivorous insects. Gravimetric analyses were conducted during two consecutive years to assess the effects of temperature and food quality on fourth instar larvae of the forest tent caterpillar Malacosoma disstria Hübner. Larvae were reared in the laboratory at three different temperatures (18, 24 and 30 degrees C) and on two types of diet; leaves of sugar maple trees Acer saccharum Marsh. located at the forest edge (sun-exposed leaves) or within the forest interior (shade-exposed leaves). In general, larvae reared at 18 degrees C had lower growth rates and lower consumption rates than larvae reared at the warmer temperatures (24 and 30 degrees C). Moreover, the duration of the instar decreased significantly with increasing temperatures. Type of diet also affected the growth rates and amount of food ingested by larvae but did not affect the duration of the instar. Larvae fed sun-exposed leaves consumed more food and gained higher biomasses. Values of approximate digestibility and efficiency of conversion of ingested food were also higher when larvae were fed sun-exposed leaves. Higher growth rates with increasing temperatures were primarily the result of the shorter stadium duration. The higher growth rates of larvae fed sun-exposed leaves were possibly the result of stimulatory feeding and consequently greater food intake and also a more efficient use of food ingested. This study suggests that the performance of M. disstria caterpillars could be enhanced by warmer temperatures and higher leaf quality.
