Three cases of group fusion were observed among vervet monkeys in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, during the 1984 drought. In all cases, group fusion involved the migration of at least two females into a small neighboring group. Following migration, the females' natal groups ceased to exist. Although migrants initially assumed low ranks, none received high rates of aggression, and two rose in rank 6 months after their arrival. Migrant females appeared to employ a number of “strategies,” including grooming, allomothering, participation in intergroup encounters, and the formation of coalitions against males and each other to hasten integration. Results suggest that the causes of male and female migration differ fundamentally, and that group fusion occurs primarily in response to the inability of small groups of females to compete successfully with other groups for resources.  相似文献

IL-10 has been suggested as a possible parameter for human African trypanosomiasis stage determination. However, conclusive experimental studies have not been carried out to evaluate this, which is a prerequisite before a potential test can be validated in humans for diagnostic purposes. We used the vervet monkey model of trypanosomiasis to scrutinize IL-10 in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Five adult males were experimentally infected with T. b. rhodesiense. The infected animals became anemic and exhibited weight loss. Parasitemia was patent after 3 days and fluctuated around 3.7 × 107 trypanosomes/ml throughout the experimental period. The total CSF white cell counts increased from pre-infection means around 3 cells/μl to a peak of 30 cells/μl, 42 days post-infection (DPI). IL-10 was not detectable (< 2 pg/ml) in serum prior to infection. IL-10 serum concentrations increased to 273 pg/ml 10 DPI coinciding with the first peak of parasitemia. Thereafter the levels declined to a mean value of 77 pg/ml 34 DPI followed by a significant rise to a second peak of 304 pg/ml (p < 0.008) 42 DPI. There was no detectable IL-10 in CSF. IL-10 synthesis is thus stimulated both in the early and transitional stages of experimental trypanosomiasis. That IL-10 is produced in early stage disease is an interesting finding unlikely to be detected in humans where it is difficult to determine the exact time of infection. The IL-10 peak observed on day 42 of infection might indicate onset of parasite neuroinvasion coinciding with a peak in white blood cell counts in the blood and CSF.  相似文献

A study was undertaken of a unique sample of 63 wild vervet monkeys Cercopithecus aethiops from a single population in Uganda collected over 35 days in 1947. Twenty-five were immature (12 females and 13 males) and 38 were adults (16 females and 22 males). Body mass, external measurements, masticatory and other masses were recorded for each individual at the time of collection, and for a few specimens, the development of the reproductive organs. Each individual was evaluated for cranial capacity, limb length and dental eruption. The comparison of immature and adult animals illustrates the mosaic nature of growth in the different body systems, as well as female–male differences. An ancestral model is proposed for catarrhine growth and development, with particular reference to sex differences. This model provides a framework for assessment of immatures and for the reconstruction of socio-ecological effects on life-history stages in populations of fossil monkeys, apes and early hominids.  相似文献

Serum IgG, IgA, and IgM levels were measured in domestically bred African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) ranging in age from 0 day to 49 months as well as in adult (5 years or older) animals of wild origin. Transplacental transfer of IgG was observed. IgG, IgA, and IgM levels increased with increasing age except for a temporal decrease of IgG level in the first month of life.  相似文献

Relatively large (n = 20-30) samples of formalin-fixed brain specimens from five Old and New World monkey species were examined in a study measuring anatomical temporal-lobe asymmetries. Linear measurements of the length of the Sylvian fissure were taken on each cerebral hemisphere to evaluate lateral differences related to development of auditory association cortex. The results indicate significantly greater Sylvian fissure length on the left hemisphere than on the right hemisphere in four of these species. Measurements of a different parameter on Saimiri sciureus brain specimens (length of anterior portion of the Sylvian fissure) also suggested temporal-lobe asymmetry favoring the left hemisphere. Other measurements (length of the Sylvian fissure lying posterior to the central sulcus, and dorso-ventral position of the Sylvian point) in Macaca mulatta and M. fascicularis did not reveal significant right/left-hemisphere differences. Sylvian-fissure length determined from photographs of M. mulatta hemispheres in contrast to results of direct measurements did not yield significant right/left-hemisphere asymmetry. We mention possible reasons why previous anatomical studies of brains from monkeys did not discern temporal-lobe asymmetry, and we also discuss whether or not certain of these asymmetries in monkeys foreshadowed the evolution of language-processing areas of the cerebral cortex in hominids.  相似文献

To elucidate compositional changes of the arteries with aging, the authors investigated the relationships among average contents of calcium, phosphorus, sulfur, and magnesium in the arteries by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The arteries used were the thoracic and abdominal aortas, coronary, common carotid, anterior, middle and posterior cerebral, vertebral, basilar, internal thoracic, axillary, radial, truncus celiacus, common, internal and external iliac, femoral, popliteal, and umbilical arteries. It was found that high correlations were found between the average contents of calcium and phosphorus, between the average contents of calcium and magnesium, and between the average contents of phosphorus and magnesium in the arteries, but not between the average contents of sulfur and the other elements. These correlations revealed that as the content of calcium and phosphorus increased in the arteries, the magnesium content increased simultaneously in the arteries, but the sulfur content did not. It is likely that magnesium forms compounds with phosphorus in the arteries.  相似文献

To elucidate the mechanism of element accumulations in the arteries with aging, the authors investigated the mass ratios among calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium in the common iliac arteries by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The subjects consisted of 16 men and 8 women, ranging in age from 65 to 93 yr. It was found that there were extremely significant correlations between calcium and phosphorus contents, between calcium and magnesium contents, and between phosphorus and magnesium contents in the common iliac arteries. In regard to the mass ratio, although the mass ratio of calcium to phosphorus was almost constant, the mass ratios of magnesium to calcium and phosphorus were different at early and advanced stages of the accumulation of calcium and phosphorus. It was found that both the mass ratios of magnesium to calcium and phosphorus were higher at an early stage of the accumulation of calcium and phosphorus in the arteries than at an advanced stage of the accumulation.  相似文献

Background Relatively little is known about the effects of very low‐level exposures to nerve agents where few signs or symptoms are present. Methods African green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabeus) (n = 8) were exposed for 10 min, whole‐body, to a single concentration of soman (0.028–0.891 mg/m3). Results EC50 values for miosis were determined to be 0.055 mg/m3 and 0.132 mg/m3 when defined as a 50 percent reduction in pupil area and diameter, respectively. In general, performance on a serial probe recognition task remained unchanged at lower concentrations, but responding was suppressed at the largest concentration tested. Soman produced concentration‐dependent inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity and, to a lesser extent, butyrylcholinesterase activity. Conclusions These results characterize threshold soman exposure concentrations that produce miosis in the absence of other overt signs of toxicity and extend previous studies indicating that miosis is a valuable early indicator for the detection of soman vapor exposure.  相似文献

To explore reasons for a high accumulation of Ca and P occurring in the coronary artery of Thai with aging, the authors investigated age-related changes of elements in the coronary artery, ascending aorta near the heart, and cardiac valves in single individuals, and the relationships in the elements between the coronary artery and either the ascending aorta or cardiac valves. After an ordinary dissection by medical students at Chiang Mai University was finished, the anterior descending arteries of the left coronary artery, ascending aortas, mitral valves, and aortic valves were resected from the subjects. The subjects consisted of 17 men and 9 women, ranging in age from 46 to 76 yr. The element content was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The average content of Ca and P was the highest in the coronary artery and decreased in the order aortic valve, ascending aorta, and mitral valve. The Ca, P, and Mg content increased in the coronary artery in the fifties and in the ascending aorta, aortic valve, and mitral valve in the sixties. It should be noted that the accumulation of Ca, P, and Mg occurred earlier in the coronary artery than in the ascending aorta, aortic valve, and mitral valve. It was found that with respect to the Ca, P, Mg, and Na contents, the coronary artery correlated well with both the aortic valve and ascending aorta, especially with the aortic valve, but it did not correlate with the mitral valves. This finding suggests that the accumulation of Ca, P, Mg, and Na occurs in the coronary artery together with the aortic valve and ascending aorta, but not together with the mitral valve. Because regarding the accumulation of Ca, P, and Mg, the ascending aorta and aortic valve are preceded by the coronary artery, it is unlikely that the accumulation of Ca, P, and Mg spreads from the ascending aorta or aortic valve to the coronary artery.  相似文献

Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) are very important minerals in reptile nutrition, but many diets still are not balanced. To achieve optimal growth, including a healthy skeleton and a strong shell, a well‐balanced supply with these minerals is prerequisite. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the digestibility of diets with different calcium levels, with special emphasis on the digestibility of minerals. Fourteen captive‐born juvenile Galapagos giant tortoises of the Zurich and Rotterdam Zoos were used. The animals were housed indoors at a mean temperature of 23°C and 25°C, and at 65% and 60% humidity, respectively. The animals from the same zoo were fed the same diet, which consisted of vegetables, herbs, and a mixture of different Ca sources. Daily mixed fecal samples of all tortoises were collected from day 8 to day 18. A Weender analysis was performed and the HCl‐insoluble ash was used as an indigestible indicator (marker) for the determination of the apparent digestibility. The Ca content of the mixed feedstuffs of diet I was 1.43% on a dry matter basis, and the Ca:P ratio in the food was 3.9:1. In diet II, the Ca content was 2.06% on a dry matter basis, and the Ca:P ratio in the food was 4.8:1. Diet III contained 7.33% of Ca on a dry matter basis, and the Ca:P ratio in the food was 6.7:1. The digestibility of Ca in diet I was 42%. The other examined minerals, Mg and P, had a digestibility of 54% and 84%, respectively. In diet II, the digestibility of Ca was 63%, of Mg 76%, and of P 88%, and in diet III the digestibility of Ca was 82%, of Mg 92%, and of P 91%. The results of this study indicated that higher Ca concentrations in the diet led to an increased apparent digestibility of Ca, Mg, and P. Previous studies have found that P nutrition of plants is an important factor in the uptake and translocation of Mg and Ca, and increasing root osmotic hydraulic conductance (Lo) and osmotically driven xylem exudate flow (Jv). Experiments were designed to determine if the observed changes in Mg and Ca uptake and translocation, Jv, and Lo from altered P nutrition are related or are separate functions. When six-week old squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) plants grown in perlite were treated with P levels ranging from 50 to 400 μM P for seven days, Jv and Lo increased as P treatment level increased. Xylem exudate concentrations of Mg and Ca were maintained as Jv increased, resulting in an increase in total flux of these mineral elements. The increase in Mg and Ca flux in the xylem exudate correlated with increased shoot Mg and Ca levels as P nutritional level was raised. Further studies with greenhouse grown plants indicated that the increases in Jv, Lo, and Mg and Ca flux were more responsive to changes in P nutritional level than to similar changes in levels of other anions. In hydroponically grown squash plants, xylem exudate was collected for a 20 min period after 0, 2 and 4 h in treatments of 50 and 500 μM P or after P treatment was increased from 50 to 500 μM. Immediately after nutrient solution P was increased (time 0), there was a 33% increase in Jv and a 22% increase in Lo when compared to the 50 μM P treatment. The Jv and Lo of the 50–500 μM P treatment did not equal levels of the continuous 500 μM control at time 0, but were similar after 2 and 4 h. Flux of Mg and Ca did not increase as rapidly as Jv in the 50–500 treatment indicating that regulation of Mg and Ca uptake and xylem loading by P may lag behind that of water movement. 目的:观察去睾丸和睾酮补充对雄兔骨密度和血清钙、镁、磷的影响.方法:周龄相同的雄性新西兰白兔随机分成对照组、去睾丸组和睾酮补充组(去睾丸后肌注十一酸睾酮).同等条件下饲养20周后测量各组兔全身骨密度、腰椎骨密度、股骨颈骨密度,并检测血清总睾酮(TT)、雌二醇(E2),脱氢表雄酮(DHEA)水平以及血清钙(Ca2 )、游离钙([Ca2 ]i)镁(Mg2 )、磷(P)和碱性磷酸酶(AKP)浓度.结果:去睾丸组血清TT水平明显下降(P<0.01),睾酮补充组血清TT水平升高接近对照组(P>0.05).去睾丸组血清E2和E2/TT比明显高于对照组(P<0.01),睾酮补充组血清E2和E2/TT下降,接近对照组水平(P均>0.05).与对照组相比,去睾丸组血清Ca2 、[Ca2 ]i、Mg2 以及AKP浓度明显升高(P均<0.01),睾酮补充组血清Ca2 、[Ca2 ]i、Mg2 以及AKP浓度较去睾丸组低,接近对照组水平(P>0.05).股骨颈骨密度在去睾丸组明显低于对照组和睾酮补充组(P<0.01),而后两组无差别(P>0.05).结论:去睾丸后雄兔血清TT明显下降,E2和E2/TT比以及Ca2 、[Ca2 ]i、Mg2 和AKP浓度明显升高,骨密度显著下降,睾酮补充使上述异常明显改善.  相似文献

Several New World atheriniforms have been recognized as temperature‐dependent sex determined (TSD) and yet possess a genotypic sex determinant (amhy) which is primarily functional at mid‐range temperatures. In contrast, little is known about the sex determination in Old World atheriniforms, even though such knowledge is crucial to understand the evolution of sex determination mechanisms in fishes and to model the effects of global warming and climate change on their populations. This study examined the effects of water temperature on sex determination of an Old World atheriniform, the cobaltcap silverside Hypoatherina tsurugae, in which we recently described an amhy homologue. We first assessed the occurrence of phenotypic/genotypic sex mismatches in wild specimens from Tokyo Bay for three years (2014–2016) and used otolith analysis to estimate their birth dates and approximate thermal history during the presumptive period of sex determination. Phenotypic sex ratios became progressively biased towards males (47.3%–78.2%) during the period and were associated with year‐to‐year increases in the frequency of XX‐males (7.3%–52.0%) and decreases in XY/YY‐females (14.5%–0%). The breeding season had similar length but was delayed by about 1 month per year between 2014 and 2016, causing larvae to experience higher temperatures during the period of sex determination from year to year. Larval rearing experiments confirmed increased likelihood of feminization and masculinization at low and high temperatures, respectively. The results suggest that cobaltcap silverside has TSD, or more specifically the coexistence of genotypic and environmental sex determinants, and that it affects sex ratios in wild populations.  相似文献
