Abstract. We investigated changes in the composition and abundance of understory species after fire in the southern boreal forest around Lake Duparquet, Québec. Ten plots of 100 m2 were sampled in each of eight sites varying in post-fire age from 26 to 230 yr, with 20 1-m2 quadrats in each of these 80 plots. Variation in the understory was described by DCA ordination and interpreted as a regeneration succession series. Thickness of the organic layers, stand age and canopy composition were all correlated with vegetational change. This change was not constant throughout succession; some old sites showed an increase in the diversity and abundance of certain pioneer species. This was partly related to openings in the canopy resulting from a major outbreak of spruce budworm, which affected sites dominated by Abies balsamea. The ordinations were performed on both the 100-m2 plots and the 1-m2 quadrats. Heterogeneity within sites was larger at the 1-m2 scale and there was a great deal of overlap in the position of the quadrats in ordination space. At the smaller scale of analysis, stand age and thickness of the organic layers were not correlated with the changes observed in the understory.  相似文献

To simulate feeding by the spruce budworm ( Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.), the apical current-year shoots on 1-year-old branches in the uppermost whorl of 6-year-old balsam fir [ Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.] trees were either removed completely by debudding before the start of the growing season or defoliated 0, 50, 90 or 100% shortly after budbreak. Debudded branches were treated at the apical end with 0, 0.1 or 1.0 mg of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (g lanolin)−1. Ninety % of the 1-year-old needles were also removed from some of the experimental branches. After ca 4 weeks of growth, the radial width of new xylem and the level of IAA were determined in the 1-year-old internode. The IAA content was measured by radioimmunoassay.
The removal or defoliation of current-year shoots inhibited tracheid production and decreased the IAA level. Exogenous IAA stimulated tracheid production and increased the IAA level in debudded branches. Current-year shoot defoliation also inhibited current-year shoot elongation. The inhibitory effect of current-year needle removal on all parameters generally increased with increasing intensity of defoliation. The removal of 1-year-old needles did not affect the IAA level or current-year shoot elongation, nor did it influence tracheid production in branches with current-year shoots. However, removal of 1-year-old needles inhibited tracheid production in debudded branches supplied with exogenous IAA. The results indicate that (1) IAA is involved in the control of tracheid production in the 1-year-old internode, (2) IAA is supplied primarily by current-year shoots, and (3) defoliation by the spruce budworm inhibits tracheid production partly by decreasing the supply of IAA.  相似文献

The acceptance behaviour of the parasitic wasp, Trichogramma minutum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), was studied on two types of egg masses of eastern spruce budworm (SBW), Choristoneura fumiferana Clemens. Host eggs were obtained from moths that had been fed balsam fir or artificial diet during their larval stages. Parasitoids were reared from both types of hosts. Host acceptance assays were conducted where females were provided with a single egg mass and with a choice between egg masses. Regardless of the parasitoid's rearing host, females parasitised hosts reared from artificial diet more often than those from balsam fir. Response was consistent in both no-choice and choice assays. Rejection of hosts tended to occur during the examining stage of behaviour, suggesting that acceptability is judged externally. If a host was accepted, the same number of eggs were laid per egg mass regardless of treatment.  相似文献

Abstract. Natural dynamics in the boreal forest is influenced by disturbances. Fire recurrence affects community development and landscape diversity. Forest development was studied in the northeastern boreal forest of Quebec. The objective was to describe succession following fire and to assess the factors related to the changes in forest composition and structure. The study area is located in northeastern Quebec, 50 km north of Baie‐Comeau. We used the forest inventory data gathered by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ). In circular plots of 400 m2, the diameter at breast height (DBH) of all stems of tree species greater than 10 cm was recorded and in 40 m2 subplots, stems smaller than 10 cm were measured. A total of 380 plots were sampled in an area of 6000 km2. The fire history reconstruction was done based on historical maps, old aerial photographs and field sampling. A time‐since‐fire class, a deposit type, slope, slope aspect and altitude were attributed to each plot. Each plot was also described according to species richness and size structure characteristics. Traces of recent disturbance were also recorded in each plot. Changes in forest composition were described using ordination analyses (NMDS and CCA) and correlated with the explanatory variables. Two successional pathways were observed in the area and characterized by the early dominance of intolerant hardwood species or Picea mariana. With time elapsed since the last fire, composition converged towards either Picea mariana, Abies balsamea or a mixture of both species and the size structure of the coniferous dominated stands got more irregular. The environmental conditions varied between stands and explained part of the variability in composition. Their effect tended to decrease with increasing time elapsed since fire, as canopy composition was getting more similar. Gaps may be important to control forest dynamics in old successional communities.  相似文献

The impact of balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Miller) flowering on nutritional and allelochemical quality of pollen, current-year and one-year-old foliage is studied in relation to spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) growth, development and utilization of food and nitrogen. In the laboratory, using fresh food from the field, we simulated conditions of low larval population density, in which there is no current-year foliage depletion during the spruce budworm feeding period. Similarly, we simulated conditions of high larval population density when current-year foliage depletion occurs.Because of the high nutritive value of pollen (high amounts of amino acids and minerals, especially nitrogen; low monoterpene content), insects from flowering trees reached the fifth instar five days earlier than those from non-flowering trees, and had heavier dry- and nitrogen-weights at the beginning of the fifth instar. At budbreak, switching from pollen to current-year foliage negatively affected conversion efficiencies and digestibilities of food and nitrogen (AD; ADN; ECDN; ECI; ECIN). The switch from pollen to new foliage had a detrimental impact on fifth-instar survival and on newly-moulted sixth-instar dry- and nitrogen-weights. Moreover, during the fifth instar, balsam fir flowering reduced the nutritive value of current-year foliage, which in turn, might have contributed to the reduced larval growth. Nevertheless, during the sixth instar, balsam fir flowering affected the biochemistry of current-year foliage in ways that enabled larvae to compensate for their low fifth-instar biological performance; larvae also managed to reach pupal dry weight similar to larvae reared on non-flowering trees. Current-year foliage from flowering trees contained less nitrogen, total soluble sugars and total monoterpenes. Those foliar characteristics enabled larvae to increase food and nitrogen consumption rates (RCR; RNCR), because of lower repellency and/or post-ingestional feedback from monoterpenes.As for current-year foliage, balsam fir flowering reduced nitrogen, total soluble sugar and total monoterpene contents in one-year-old foliage during the sixth-instar feeding period. These characteristics enabled sixth-instar larvae, fed on old foliage from flowering trees, to have high relative food and nitrogen consumption rates (RCR; RNCR). Larvae were also able to reach higher relative growth rates (RGR) and relative nitrogen accumulation rates (RNAR) compared to larvae reared on one-year-old foliage from non-flowering trees. Finally, larvae on flowering trees had pupal dry weight similar to those from non-flowering trees, but reached the adult stage nine days earlier.Regardless the foliage type consumed by spruce budworm larvae during the sixth instar, pollen consumption during early larval stages reduced total development time, and thus exposure time to natural enemies. This phenomenon might increase larval survival. Balsam fir flowering changed the biochemistry of one-year-old and current-year foliages, but did not affect pupal dry weights of larvae reared on flowering trees compared to those reared on non-flowering trees. Thus, at low population density, spruce budworm populations in balsam fir flowering stands might be favoured over those in balsam fir non-flowering stands. In addition, when larvae consumed one-year-old foliage during the entire sixth instar, those on flowering trees are probably favoured over those on non-flowering trees. However, because flowering trees produce less new foliage than non-flowering trees, current-year foliage depletion may occur earlier on flowering trees than on non-flowering trees. Thus, at similar larval population density, larvae on flowering trees might have to feed on one-year-old foliage earlier than those on non-flowering trees. In that case, spruce budworm populations on non-flowering stands would be favoured over those on flowering stands.  相似文献

Abstract. The concentrations and contents of organic matter and nutrients in organic deposits on the forest floor were estimated along a 231-yr chronosequence following fire at the southern limit of the boreal forest in eastern Canada. The sampling design was stratified to take into account the variability related to the presence of the principal tree species as well as to the presence of large gaps created by a recent spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) outbreak. The forest floor showed a steady accumulation of organic matter and total nutrients with time-since-fire and a 50 % decrease in the concentrations of available P and K, but not N (as determined by aerobic incubation). The increase in forest-floor weight was accompanied by an increased storage of available N, Ca and Mg. The availability of N and Ca was more strongly affected by tree species and gaps than by time-since-fire. A high N-availability was observed under Betula papyrifera and in gaps, while high a Ca-availability was found near Populus tremuloides and Thuja occidentalis. In old sites, the forest floor of gaps, created by a recent spruce budworm outbreak, had a necromass similar to that of a young forest, but the low concentrations of available P and K of an old forest.  相似文献

1 Nosema fumiferanae infections in populations of both sexes of spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana moths, collected live above the forest canopy (canopy moths), within the tree crown (crown moths) and in drop trays (dead moths), were examined over a 5‐year period in New Brunswick, Canada. 2 The incidence of infection and of moderate–heavy infections in canopy and crown moths of both sexes increased concomitantly with moth eclosion, indicating that N. fumiferanae retards larval/pupal development, with infected moths, particularly those having higher disease loads, emerging later in the season. 3 Infection rates differed among canopy, crown, and dead female, but not male, moths. Canopy (i.e. emigrating) females had a lower incidence of infection, lower incidence of moderate–heavy infections, and had longer forewings and higher dry weights, than crown females. These results suggest that N. fumiferanae infections negatively affect aspects of female, but not male, flight performance. Regardless of infection, forewing length and dry weight of both canopy and crown females declined over the moth flight period, but infected females in both moth types were smaller than their uninfected counterparts. Forewing lengths and dry weights of moderately–heavily infected females were most severely affected. 4 Despite high annual infection rates in parents, only a small percentage of offspring (second‐instar larvae) that established feeding sites each spring were infected, indicating that high rates of horizontal transmission occurred annually throughout the larval period. 5 The present study indicates that whether N. fumiferanae infections are a debilitating sublethal factor in spruce budworm populations depends more on the disease load than on the overall incidence of infection. The potential importance of N. fumiferanae infections on various fitness parameters related to host dispersal is discussed.  相似文献

  1. The jack pine budworm Choristoneura pinus pinus is a defoliator distributed throughout the range of jack pine Pinus banksiana in North America. Jack pine budworm feeds primarily on jack pine. More than 2400 hectares of defoliation of red pine Pinus resinosa were noted during an outbreak of C. pinus pinus from 2004–2008 in Minnesota and Wisconsin, U.S.A.
  2. Defoliation of red pine across thousands of hectares, detectable during aerial surveys, is a significant deviation from historical records.
  3. Fifty‐six study plots were established across 15 counties of Minnesota and Wisconsin to quantify densities and impacts of jack pine budworm in locations showing defoliation of both red pine and jack pine.
  4. Populations of jack pine budworm on red pine behaved similarly to those on jack pine, consuming pollen cones and vegetative shoots. The mean number of egg masses per branch and per site was greater on red pine than on jack pine at study sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin, respectively.
  5. It is not known what led to the outbreak of jack pine budworm on red pine, nor is it clear whether landscape‐scale defoliation of this magnitude represents an isolated incident or a shift in relative host use. Hypotheses regarding the mechanisms behind this alternative host use by jack pine budworm are discussed.

Abstract. The ability of male spruce budworm moths, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), to orientate to and locate virgin female moths was investigated in a laboratory wind tunnel. When presented with two caged ‘target female’ moths, more than 99% of the male moths locked on and flew directly to the females. When confined for 3 h before release, downwind of a three-dimensional array of thirty-five evenly distributed female moths (a density of 40/m3), over 90% of the males still successfully oriented to one or another of the females, although not always to the target females. With an array of thirty-five septa containing either E-11-tetradecenyl acetate on E-11-tetradecenol there was no visible change in behaviour; >90% of the males flew directly to the two target females, which indicates that neither the acetate nor the alcohol has potential for mating disruption. An array of thirty-five septa containing a 955 blend of E- and Z-11-tetradecenal, the main components of the spruce budworm sex pheromone, significantly reduced the numbers of male moths able to locate the target females, and effects were concentration-dependent. The highest concentration, which gave a release rate similar to that of a calling female, produced the same level of disruption as the thirty-five females, but sensory fatigue became a factor in addition to ‘false trail following’. Lower concentrations were significantly less effective, with no evidence of sensory fatigue. At all concentrations significant numbers of males flew to the septa (false trail following), but when male moths were left uncaged in the tunnel for a further 3h, most eventually located the females. This suggests that false trail following alone will not prevent mating. The level of disruption was not improved by the addition of 2% tetradecanal to the 955 blend. Similar levels of disruption to the 955 blend were obtained with an 80:20 blend. A 5050 blend still caused a significant amount of false trail following, but less than the other blends. The ability of male spruce budworm to orientate to off-blend trails was enhanced if the males were first exposed to the natural, female-produced pheromone.  相似文献

1 A variety of silvicultural techniques have been suggested for managing forest defoliating insects. The objectives focus on minimizing defoliation or minimizing damage from defoliation. 2 The theoretical foundations of many approaches have been built upon observation and correlation, and very little reliable empirical evidence exists to support the objectives of silvicultural manipulations. Existing experimental data have yielded inconsistent results. 3 We review the conceptual framework and underlying assumptions of the major silvicultural approaches recommended or in use in North America. 4 Well‐designed, long‐term studies are needed to clarify the effect of silviculture on defoliators and their effect on forests.  相似文献

Question: To what extent do small‐scale disturbances in the forest canopy, created by natural disturbance agents, affect stand development? Doubts exist as to whether small canopy openings have any real effect on the understory tree recruitment, especially in boreal forests. Location: Conifer and mixed stands in the Gaspesian region in eastern Québec. The main natural disturbance agents are recurring outbreaks of Choristoneura fumiferana (eastern spruce budworm) and winds. Methods: Linear transects in 27 sites were used to describe the gap (< 0.1 ha) regime parameters, including gap fraction, gap size and change in disturbance severity through time. Three stand types were distinguished, based on a gradient of abundance of tree host species for the eastern spruce budworm. The impact of gaps was evaluated on the basis of changes in the number, the period of recruitment, and the composition of tree saplings present within gap areas. Changes were measured along the gap size gradient, and according to the pattern of recent budworm epidemics. Results: The gap fraction is highly variable (18%‐64%) and is on average relatively high (42%). Gap sizes have a positively skewed distribution. In most cases the growth rate among gap filling saplings increased sufficiently to date disturbance events. The composition and the structure of understory trees were affected by gap formation. The number of shade‐intolerant tree species did increase during or following periods of particularly severe canopy disturbances. However, the establishment or survival of shade intolerant species was not restricted to larger gaps or more intensely disturbed periods. Conclusions: In sub‐boreal forests of Eastern Canada, small scale disturbances in the tree canopy influence stand regeneration dynamics, but not to the extent that parameters such as sapling composition and recruitment patterns depend on gap regime characteristics.  相似文献

1 Nectar provided by flowering plants has been suggested as an important factor enhancing parasitism rates of herbivorous insects. Artificial nectar has been shown to increase parasitoid longevity and fecundity in laboratory studies. 2 We studied the influence of understory nectar on parasitism of the spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana in a field experiment in which we either removed understory flowering herbs or sprayed a sucrose solution on the understory vegetation in 0.25 ha quadrats. 3 Cohorts of laboratory-reared second instars were transferred the field to evaluate parasitism in the quadrats. The larvae were harvested as fifth instars and reared for parasitoids. 4 Parasitoids of early instars caused greater mortality in the supplemental sucrose treatment than in the vegetation-removal treatment or the control. Parasitoids of older larvae did not respond to the treatments. Larger-scale treatments may be necessary to elicit a response by the larger parasitoids that attack older larvae.  相似文献

Abstract. In order to describe and compare the post‐fire succession patterns of the two ecological regions (mixed‐wood and coniferous ecoregions) of northwestern Quebec, 260 forest stands were sampled with the point‐centred plot method. The mixed‐wood ecological region belongs to the Abies balsamea‐Betula papyrifera bioclimatic domain whereas the coniferous ecological region belongs to the Picea mariana‐moss bioclimatic domain. In each plot, tree composition was described, surficial deposits and drainage were recorded, and fire history was reconstructed using standard dendro‐ecological methods. Ordination techniques (Correspondence Analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis) were used to describe the successional patterns of forest vegetation and to correlate them with the explanatory variables. The results showed the importance of surficial deposits, the time since fire and the ecoregion in explaining the variation of stand composition. Abies balsamea tends to increase in importance with an increase in time since fire, and this trend is more pronounced in the mixed‐wood region. Even when controlling both for surficial deposits and time since fire, differences in successional trends were observed between the two ecoregions. As all the species are present in both ecoregions and as they are all observed further north, our results suggest that both the landscape configuration and fire regime parameters such as fire size and fire intensity are important factors involved in these differences.  相似文献

Abstract. The percentage of above-canopy Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (%PPFD) was measured at 0, 50 and 100 cm above the forest floor and above the main understory vegetation in stands of (1) pure Betula papyrifera (White birch), (2) pure Populus tremuloides (Trembling aspen), (3) mixed broad-leaf-conifer, (4) shade-tolerant conifer and (5) pure Pinus banksiana (Jack pine) occurring on both clay and till soil types. %PPFD was measured instantaneously under overcast sky conditions (nine locations within each of 29 stands) and continuously for a full day under clear sky conditions (five locations within each of eight stands). The percentage cover of the understory layer was estimated at the same locations as light measurements. Mean %PPFD varied from 2% at the forest floor under Populus forests to 15% above the understory vegetation cover under Betula forests. Percent PPFD above the understory vegetation cover was significantly higher under shade intolerant tree species such as Populus, Betula and Pinus than under shade tolerant conifers. No significant differences were found in %PPFD above the understory vegetation cover under similar tree species between clay and till soil types. The coefficient of variation in %PPFD measured in the nine locations within each stand was significantly lower under deciduous dominated forests (mean of 19%) than under coniferous dominated forests (mean of 40%). %PPFD measured at the forest floor was positively correlated with %PPFD measured above the understory vegetation and negatively correlated with cumulative total percent cover of the understory vegetation (R2 = 0.852). The proportion of sunflecks above 250 and 500 mmol m–2 s–1 was much lower and %PPFD in shade much higher under Populus and Betula forests than under the other forests. Differences in the mean, variability and nature of the light environment found among forest and soil types are discussed in relation to their possible influences on tree succession.  相似文献

Flying male spruce budworm ( Choristoneura fumiferana [Clem.]) moths responding to virgin females and to synthetic pheromone in a wind tunnel maintained a constant rate of upwind progress when held by moving optomotor cues at a constant distance from the pheromone source. When allowed to progress upwind to the source, however, they slowed their upwind speed progressively as they approached it.   • 1 The prevalence, intensity and transmission of Nosema fumiferanae (Thomson) (Microsporidae) infections and potential impacts on the survival of field populations of spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) were examined in three plots in New Brunswick, Canada, from 1983 to 1992.
  • 2 The highest prevalence of N. fumiferanae infection in post‐hibernation second‐instar larvae occurred in the plot where prevalence in female pupae was the highest in the previous generation, suggesting higher rates of vertical transmission. There was little change in the prevalence of N. fumiferanae infections between the second and sixth instars in the later generations. In the two other plots, N. fumiferanae prevalence increased by approximately 25% from the second to sixth larval stadia. Coincident with the changes in N. fumiferanae prevalence were substantial declines in the populations of spruce budworms, making it difficult to determine rates of horizontal transfer of the disease.
  • 3 In all plots and in all years, there were progressive increases in the intensity of N. fumiferanae infections (spore loads/individual) from the second to sixth instars and pupae.
  • 4 Annual spruce budworm mortality associated with N. fumiferanae was ≤15% of all mortality in reared specimens and was positively correlated with but generally less than 30% of annual N. fumiferanae prevalence.

This study evaluated factors that influence the regurgitation behaviour of sixth instar spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana Clemens (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), reared on balsam fir, Abies balsamea (L.) Mill. (Pinaceae), under various experimental conditions in the laboratory. Upon physical disturbance, larvae discharged a median volume of regurgitant of 0.4 μl when fed and 1.6 μl when food‐deprived. Larvae deprived of food for 24 or 48 h disgorged more regurgitant than larvae feeding on balsam fir foliage, and the effect was consistent for laboratory‐reared and field‐collected larvae. The water content of the foliage fed upon by larvae had no immediate impact on the volume of regurgitant; following a 24‐h period of food deprivation, however, larvae that previously fed on fresh foliage discharged >2.5 times more regurgitant than larvae that previously fed on dry foliage. Self‐regulated regurgitation by larvae, measured using the number of regurgitant stains on filter paper, was >10 times higher when larvae had access to balsam fir foliage than when they were starved. The number of larvae confined inside the Petri dish (one or four individuals) had a relatively small effect on regurgitation. Larvae were deterred from feeding when balsam fir needles were entirely covered with regurgitant, but not when only a portion of the foliage was treated. These results suggest that the regurgitant does not serve as resource marking or spacing pheromone. The high level of regurgitation by larvae after contact with ants suggests that the regurgitant has evolved in part as a defence mechanism against natural enemies.  相似文献

在ELISA间接法中,应用单克隆抗体检测感染云杉卷叶蛾核型多角体病毒(Choristoneura fumiferana nuclear polyhedrosis virus,CfNPV)的云杉卷叶蛾幼虫体内多角体蛋白和病毒粒子。三龄幼虫喂饲表层涂有CfNPV的人工饲料(2×10~5PIB/cm~2)后6小时,即可在幼虫抽提液中检出多角体蛋白抗原(每条幼虫含0.14μg)和病毒粒子抗原(每条幼虫含0.32μg),随后此两种抗原量逐渐增加,直至第5天。而用染色涂片镜检法,则在添食病毒后3天才可观察到有少量多角体,病虫的病症需5~6天后才出现。因此,本法是一种快速、特异和敏感的检测杆状病毒的方法,其敏感度为1ml含10ng提纯的病毒粒子或多角体蛋白都能被检测出来。  相似文献
