In a study relating geographic distribution ofAotus populations with karyotype and coat pattern,Hershkovitz (1983) suggested that this genus comprises nine species.A. vociferans (2n=46) is distributed along the left bank of the Maranon river, andA. nancymai (2n=54) along the right bank of the same river. In the present study we analyzed the karyotypes of 11A. vociferans and 11A. nancymai specimens using G- and C-banding and NOR-staining. Of these animals, fiveA. vociferans were sympatric with fiveA. nancymai in Isla Aramaza, Colombia; oneA. vociferans was sympatric with threeA. nancymai in Yahuma, Peru; oneA. vociferans was sympatric with threeA. nancymai in Terezinha I, Brazil. No signs of hybridation between the taxa was observed at any time, with allA. vociferans having 2n=46 and allA. nancymai 2n=54, as previously reported in the literature. These data suggest thatA. vociferans andA. nancymai should indeed be distinct species.  相似文献

Serum and urine analytes were compared between adult wild-caught and adult colony-born owl monkeys (Aotus nancymae), to determine if normative clinical pathology data were similar. Significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) were noted in serum protein, glucose, sodium, urine calcium, calcium clearance, and fractional clearance of calcium between the two groups. The results suggest that reference data for feral owl monkeys is not completely applicable to colony-born animals, however, the differences are too small to be of clinical significance.  相似文献

Population densities of two species of night (or owl) monkeys (Aotus nancymai and Aotus vociferans) were estimated using transect census methods. Densities of Aotus nancymai were approximately 46.3 individuals/km2 in lowland forests and 24.2 individuals/km2 in highland forests. For Aotus vociferans densities were 33.0 individuals/km2 in lowland forests and 7.9 individuals/km2 in highland forests. A. vociferans occurs north of the Río Amazonas-Marañon and A. nancymai south of it, except for the northern enclave between the Ríos Tigre and Pastaza. The two species are nowhere sympatric. However, the two known karyotypic forms of A. vociferans occupy the same habitats throughout the Peruvian range of the species.  相似文献

The nine allopatric species of Aotus recognized represent two natural groups distinguished by karyotype, color, and pelage patterns. Correlated with these group characters are reported differences in serum proteins and degrees of susceptibility or immunity to experimental infection with malarial parasites. The primitive gray-neck species group of Aotus contains A. brumbacki (new species), A. lemurinus (with subspecies lemurinus and griseimembra), A. trivirgatus, and A. vociferans. The derived red-neck group contains A. nancymai (new species), A. miconax. A. infulatus, and A. azarae (with subspecies azarae and boliviensis). Only the two new species are described but a key to the species and subspecies gives the diagnostic characters of each. The gray-neck group occurs almost entirely north of the Amazon, the red-neck group almost entirely south. The distributional exceptions are enclave populations resulting from river bend cutoffs. Formation of an enclave population of A. nancymai is discussed and available information on the biology of this species is reported.  相似文献

In the Amazon lowlands of Peru, Aotus nancymai and A. vociferans were observed to use four different types of sleeping sites: (1) holes in the trunks and branches of dry or senescent trees; (2) concavities in polyaxial branching nodes of trees protected by dense entanglements of creepers, climbing plants, vines, and masses of diverse epiphytes; (3) complex sites among masses of epiphytes, climbers, and vines; and (4) simple sites among thickets and dense foliage. Each type is described. There was competition and sharing of sleeping holes between Aotus and other nocturnal arboreal mammals.  相似文献

The observation of remarkable karyotypic variation in owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus) stimulated us to study the chromosomal evolution of this New World genus. As an extension of this project, we examined the chromosome complement of a “phenotype-B” Aotus population from Peru. In addition to karyotype V(2n = 46), two new karyotypes with diploid numbers of 47 and 48 were identified. A G-band comparison of these karyotypes indicated that the chromosome number polymorphism in these Peruvian owl monkeys resulted from a single fusion or fission event involving a single metacentric and two acrocentric chromosome pairs. This mechanism is also known to be responsible for the chromosome number polymorphism in at least two other populations of phenotype B Aotus, one from Colombia and the other from Panama.  相似文献

Serum and urine analytes were compared between adult wild-caught owl monkeys (Aotus nancymae) and adult wild-caught squirrel monkeys (Saimiri peruviensis) to determine if normative clinical pathology data were similar. An objective of the study was to confirm that species of neotropical primates are distinct with regard to physiologic parameters, and should not be considered interchangeable in biomedical research. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were noted in many serum and urine analytes between the two groups. The results suggest that reference data for wild-caught owl monkeys are not applicable to squirrel monkeys, and the differences are sufficiently large to be of clinical significance. These findings illuminate the diversity among species of neotropical primates.  相似文献

Non-human primates belonging to the Aotus genus have been shown to be excellent experimental models for evaluating drugs and vaccine candidates against malaria and other human diseases. The immune system of this animal model must be characterised to assess whether the results obtained here can be extrapolated to humans. Class I and II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins are amongst the most important molecules involved in response to pathogens; in spite of this, the techniques available for genotyping these molecules are usually expensive and/or time-consuming. Previous studies have reported MHC-DRB class II gene typing by microsatellite in Old World primates and humans, showing that such technique provides a fast, reliable and effective alternative to the commonly used ones. Based on this information, a microsatellite present in MHC-DRB intron 2 and its evolutionary patterns were identified in two Aotus species (A. vociferans and A. nancymaae), as well as its potential for genotyping class II MHC-DRB in these primates.  相似文献

We have reported nine distinct karyotypes for Aotus, of four pelagic phenotypes, and suggest that this single species has undergone extensive subspeciation. We reconstruct the mechanism of chromosomal evolution and propose a hypothesis about the events of subspeciation in Aotus. We speculate that isolated groups of ancestral individuals living in several confined areas have separately accumulated a fusion or inversion pair as a result of inbreeding. A subsequent reassociation of descendants from these individuals led to the formation of offspring with mixtures of fusion or inversion pairs in their complements. They, in turn, radiated into different ecological niches accompanied by adaptive genetic changes and eventually gave rise to the present forms of Aotus distinguishable by their karyotypes, but not easily recognizable by ordinary taxonomic criteria.  相似文献

We described the karyotypes detected in 23Aotus specimens captured on Southwestern Amazon region (63°30'W, 9°00'S). This region should be occupied byA. nigriceps. However, the animals described here have a fur pattern and a karyotypes similar to those ofA. azarae boliviensis andA. infulatus. The females presented 50 chromosomes and the males 49 as a consequence of fusion between the chromosome Y and an autosome. This sample presented polymorphisms of G- and C-banding and NOR-staining. These animals are karyotypically intermediate betweenA. a. boliviensis andA. infulatus. The taxonomy and karyotypic evolution of these taxa are discussed.  相似文献

Rodent cells were hybridized with owl monkey (Aotus) cells of karyotypes II, III, V, and VI. Aotus-rodent somatic hybrid lines preferentially segregating Aotus chromosomes were selected to determine the chromosomal location of the major histocompatibility complex and other genes with which it is syntenic in man. Based on correlation between concordant segregation of the chromosome as visualized by G-banding and expression of the Aotus antigens or enzymes in independent Aotus-rodent hybrid clones, we have assigned Aotus gene loci for the MHC, GLO, ME1, SOD2, and PGM3 to Aotus chromosome 9 of karyotype VI (2n=49/50), chromosome 10 of karyotype V (2n=46), and chromosome 7 of karyotypes II and III (2n = 54 and 53). On the basis of banding patterns we previously postulated that these chromosomes of the different karyotypes were homologous. The gene assignments reported here provide independent evidence for that hypothesis. Aotus chromosomes 9 (K-VI), 10 (K-V), and 7 (K-II, III) are homologous to human chromosome 6 in that they all code for the MHC, GLO, ME1, SOD2, and PGM3. The structural differences between these homologous chromosomes probably resulted from a pericentric inversion.Abbreviations used in this paper MHC major histocompatibility complex - HLA human lymphocyte antigen - PGM3 phosphoglucomutase-3 - ME1 cytoplasmic malic enzyme-1 - SOD2 superoxide dismutase-B - GLO glyoxalase 1 - OMLA owl monkey leukocyte antigens - K karyotype - 2-M 2-microglobulin - DMEM Dulbecco's modification of Eagle's medium - PEG polyethylene glycol - HAT hypoxanthine, aminopterin, and thymidine - KC1 potassium chloride - G-band-trypsin Giemsa band  相似文献

The evolutionary history and differentiation of the owl or night monkeys (Aotus),remain poorly resolved. Variation in pelage and skeletal morphology is relatively minor across their broad range, but cytogenetic studies have revealed that at least 12 karyotypically distinct forms exist, with 2Nchromosome numbers ranging from 46 to 58. We obtained DNA samples from three putative species- A. lemurinus, A. nancymae, and A. azarae-and five karyotypes (I, II, III, IV and VI), amplified the mitochondrial cytochrome coxidase subunit II gene (COII) via PCR and sequenced it. Comparisons of the sequences indicate relatively high levels of sequence divergence among the putative species (4.3 to 6.3%), and suggest that the taxa are genetically quite distinct and have likely experienced extended periods of isolated evolution. The levels of COII divergence represent approximately one- third of the levels found between divergent platyrrhine genera, such as Aotus, Saimiriand Callimico.Using estimates of substitution rates of COII evolution in hominoid primates, the estimated date of divergence for the AotusCOII sequences is 3.6 million years. The AotusCOII data support the existence of multiple species of Aotus, with origins predating late Pleistocene climatic events. Although A. nancymaeand A. azaraeboth live south of the Amazon River and have been considered members of the same species group, phylogenetic analysis of the COII sequences does not support a close relationship between them.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of G-banded karyotypes was performed for seven species of Chiroptera, representing two families (Phyllostomidae and Molossidae). Despite the differences in diploid and fundamental numbers, extensive homologies between six karyotypes were identified: A . planirostris, P. lineatus, S. lilium, G. soricina, P. hastatus (Phyllostomidae) and M. rufus (Molossidae). Robertsonian rearrangements and pericentric inversions account for the differences between the karyotypes of phyllostomid and molossid species. The homologies and rearrangements observed reinforce the monophiletic origin of phyllostomids and the inclusion of species in different subfamilies. In situ hybridization with genomic DNA revealed considerable conservation of the karyotypes, including C. perspicillata, that did not show G-band homologies with the other species analyzed. For the first time, chromosomal evidence is presented of a common origin for Phyllostomidae and Molossidae.  相似文献

Hematologic data gathered over a period of 4.8 years from 196 owl monkeys,Aotus trivirgatus, were analyzed to find if karyotypic differences existed. It was found that none of 30 animals of karyotypes K-I and K-VI developed hemolytic anemia, whereas 46 of 99 animals of K-II, K-III and K-IV did (p<0.005). Analysis of hemograms of normal owl monkeys showed that mean percent eosinophils varied markedly, K-I monkeys having lowest counts, 3.2%, and K-VI animals having the highest, 33%. These results establish that idiopathic eosinophilia and hemolytic anemia in this species are probably unrelated but susceptibility to both has a strong genetic component.  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) may play important roles in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA is an inflammatory disease involving joints and other systems including salivary glands. To assess NO production in RA patients, we compared levels of serum, urine, and salivary nitrite and nitrate (NOx) in patients with RA and normal subjects, and we examined the relationships of these measures to disease activity. Serum, urine, and NOx levels as well as renal creatinine, NOx clearance and fractional excretion rates were compared in 25 RA patients and 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Subjects were hospitalized for 3 days and placed on a NOxrestricted diet. NOx was assayed using nitrate reductase and the Griess reagent. RA activity was assessed using standard clinical and laboratory measures. While consuming a restricted diet for 3 days to eliminate the effects of oral intake of NOx, 24 hour urinary NOx excretion decreased in both RA patients and healthy controls. Urine NOx levels at all time points were not significantly different between RA patients and normal subjects. Serum NOx levels also decreased during the 3 days of NOx restriction, but RA patients had higher serum NOx levels at all time points compared with the control group. Likewise, serum NOx/creatinine ratios were higher in RA patients than in controls. Although basal salivary flow rate and tear flow were lower in RA patients, salivary NOx levels did not differ between normal and RA subjects. While renal creatinine clearance was not different between the two groups, we found that RA patients had lower renal NOx clearance and lower renal NOx fractional excretion. After correction of p values for multiple comparisons, there were no significant relationships for the RA group between measures of disease activity and the urinary NOx, serum NOx, or urinary NOx clearance. Despite interest in the use of NO as a marker of disease activity, alterations in renal NOx clearance and fractional excretion in RA make it difficult to assess in vivo NO production even with strict dietary restriction of NOx intake.  相似文献

The MHC class I molecule plays an important role in immune response, pathogen recognition and response against vaccines and self- versus non-self-recognition. Studying MHC class I characteristics thus became a priority when dealing with Aotus to ensure its use as an animal model for biomedical research. Isolation, cloning and sequencing of exons 1–8 from 27 MHC class I alleles obtained from 13 individuals classified as belonging to three owl monkey species (A. nancymaae, A. nigriceps and A. vociferans) were carried out to establish similarities between Aotus MHC class I genes and those expressed by other New and Old World primates. Six Aotus MHC class I sequence groups (Ao-g1, Ao-g2, Ao-g3, Ao-g4, Ao-g5 and Ao-g6) weakly related to non-classical Catarrhini MHC were identified. An allelic lineage was also identified in one A. nancymaae and two A. vociferans monkeys, exhibiting a high degree of conservation, negative selection along the molecule and premature termination of the open reading frame at exon 5 (Ao-g5). These sequences high conservation suggests that they more likely correspond to a soluble form of Aotus MHC class I molecules than to a new group of processed pseudogenes. Another group, named Ao-g6, exhibited a strong relationship with Catarrhinis classical MHC-B-C loci. Sequence evolution and variability analysis indicated that Aotus MHC class I molecules experience inter-locus gene conversion phenomena, contributing towards their high variability.  相似文献

The karyotypes of Dugesia japonica from the southern part of the Southwest Islands of Japan (the Nansei Shotô) include diploidy, triploidy, mixoploidy, and mixoaneuploidy. Animals having karyotypes based on n = 8 were found on Okinawa Island, Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island, and Yonaguni Island, while animals having karyotypes based on n = 7 were found on Okinawa Island, Miyako Island, and Ishigaki Island. Toward the northern end of this island chain, at Tanegashima Island, Yakushima Island, and Amami-Ôshima Island, karyotypes based on n = 8 occurred; and on one of these, Tanegashima Island, n = 7 also occurred. Our data provide further support of the karyotypical distinction between the two subspecies of D. japonica: D. j. japonica has karyotypes based on n = 8 and D. j. ryukyuensis has karyotypes based on n = 7. Taking into consideration the geological history of the Southwest Islands and the ties of their faunas to those of adjacent areas, we can explain the current geographical distribution of the two subspecies in these islands as the result of two separate invasions by D. japonica, one in the Miocene and one after the early Quaternary.  相似文献

The R-banded karyotypes of two Indriidae, Propithecus diadema and Indri indri, are described and compared with each other and with those of the other species of this family, previously reported, Avahi laniger and Propithecus verreauxi. These comparisons show that 30 chromosomal rearrangements, including 21 Robertsonian translocations and eight pericentric inversions, differentiate these karyotypes. A phylogenic diagram is proposed, showing the early separation of Avahi and the relatively late divergence of the three other species. A populational evolution has occurred between the three other species, but Indri is clearly separated from the two other species by at least five complex rearrangements, although it shares four Robertsonian translocations with P. verreauxi but not P. diadema.  相似文献

Karyotypes of 82 individuals from five Platyrrhini species (Alouatta caraya, Aotus azarae, Callithrix jacchus, Cebus apella, andSaimiri sciureus) were studied and compared using a G-banding technique. Cytogenetic analysis showed full chromosome or full arm homologies among these geographically neighbouring species. A small number of chromosomal rearrangements (inversions, deletions, and translocations) could be detected among these taxa. These five species are closely related in chromosomal evolution. An interesting correspondance was found betweenCebus apella chromosomes and those of the other four species.Alouatta caraya andCebus apella are the closest species.Callithrix jacchus andAotus azarae would have the most separated karyotypes.  相似文献
