Arsenic is one of the most important water pollutants because of its carcinogenicity. The association between arsenical poisoning and the development of internal malignancies and skin cancer is well known. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) sets maximum contaminant level goals at zero for carcinogens. In this study are presented groundwater arsenic concentrations in the area of naturally rich boron sources of Turkey. Water samples were collected from the Hisarcik, Turkey, area, which has a large boron mine. An inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry method was used to analyze arsenic concentrations in water samples. The arsenic levels in water ranged from no detectable amounts to 3.00 mg As/L (mean: 0.46 ± 0.07SD). This mean As level exceeds by a factor of 10 the USEPA's current Maximum Contaminant Level of 0.05 mgAs/L. Some possible health problems associated with consumption of arsenic-contaminated water are discussed and public health interventions proposed. 相似文献

Blackfoot disease is a peripheral vascular disease resulting in gangrene of the lower extremities. Although extensive epidemiological
study has implicated high arsenic content in artesian well water in the endemic area, there is more to learn about the etiology
of the disease. In this study, effort is paid on multielement determination and arsenic speciation in order to find out whether
the trace element concentration pattern in well water in the Blackfoot disease endemic area is different from those of two
control areas. Experimental results indicate that the concentrations of Fe, P, Na, and Ba in well water in the Blackfoot disease
endemic area are found to be significantly higher than those of the controls, but they are still below the drinking water
standard. The total arsenic in well water in the endemic area (671±149 ppb) is much higher than that of one normal control
area of Hsin-Chu (<0.7 ppb), but is a similar level as that of other control areas of I-Lan (653±71 ppb) where no Blackfoot
disease has ever been found. It was also found that the insoluble arsenic in the endemic area (21.9 ppb) is much higher than
that in two control areas (≤1.8 ppb), and the concentration ratio between As(III) and As(V) species in the endemic area (2.6)
is much lower than that in one of the control areas, where the total arsenic is also high (14.7). The possible connection
of Blackfoot disease with trace elements, arsenic species, and possibly other as yet undefined environmental factors in the

Soil Water Retention on Gold Mine Surfaces in the Mojave Desert 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An experimental analysis of soil water retention was conducted on three substrates (an abandoned road, an overburden pile, and a heap leach) created by gold mining activities in the Mojave Desert in southeastern California. We mixed each substrate with straw, and the overburden pile and heap leach with growth medium, then applied surface rock mulch to half the plots in an attempt to increase soil water‐holding capacity for revegetation efforts. For each of the six treatments (controls included) we monitored soil water with time domain reflectometry following both a simulation of a rainfall event and a natural rainfall that occurred immediately following the simulation. Both the simulation and the rainfall increased soil water between 3 and 8%, depending on the substrate. Water retention patterns in the two‐week periods following each water addition were similar between the simulation and rainfall, and among all substrate types as values returned to background (pre‐water) conditions. The abandoned road substrate had higher background water content (16.5%) than the overburden pile (6%) and heap leach (5%). The road also had three times higher organic matter and five times higher soil nitrogen than the other two sites. Soil water retention was improved on the overburden pile by the addition of just surface rock mulch or of straw‐plus‐rock mulch. On the heap leach, increases were found with rock mulch only or with growth medium‐plus‐rock mulch. Rock mulches did not improve soil water retention and straw additions decreased soil water on the abandoned road. Judicious use of soil amendments can improve soil water conditions and improve revegetation efforts on disturbed lands in desert environments. 相似文献

Total concentrations of Hg, Al, Fe, As, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Mn, Co, V, and Zn were determined in surface sediments collected from 21 locations within the gold mining impacted Pra River basin in southwestern Ghana. Samples were collected during both the rainy and dry seasons. We hypothesized that in the rural southwestern portion of Ghana, the lack of industrial activities makes artisanal gold mining (AGM) by Hg amalgamation the main source of water resource contamination with heavy metals. Therefore, metals showing concentration trends similar to that of Hg in the studied system are likely impacted by AGM. We found that total-Hg (THg) concentrations in riverine sediments are rather low as compared to other aquatic systems that are impacted by similar mining activities. Measured THg concentrations ranged from 0.018 to 2.917 mg/kg in samples collected in the rainy season and from about 0.01 to 0.043 mg/kg in those collected during the dry season. However, the determination of the enrichment factor (EF) calculated using shale data as reference background values showed signs of severe contamination in most of the sampled sites. In the dry season, THg concentrations correlated positively and significantly to the concentrations of As (r = 0.864, p < 0.01), Cu (r = 0.691, p < 0.05), and Ni (r = 0.579, p < 0.05). Based on our previously stated hypothesis, this could then be an indication of the impact of AGM on ambient levels of these 3 elements. However, the determined concentrations of Cu, and Ni co-varied significantly with Al, suggesting that natural sources do account for the observed levels. Accordingly, both AGM and metal inputs from weathered natural deposits are likely co-responsible for the observed levels of Cu and Ni. In contrast, the lack of correlation between As and Al tends to suggest an impact of AGM on As levels. Overall, our data suggest that besides Hg and to some extent As, the impact of AGM on ambient levels of investigated metals in the gold mining impacted Pra River remains negligible. Finally, the increase in metal concentrations from the dry to the rainy season underlines the impact of changes in hydrologic conditions on levels and fate of metals in this tropical aquatic system. 相似文献

This study investigated the dissolved trace metal contamination levels of Zn, Sr, B, Al, Ba, Fe, Mn, Li, V, Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Se, and Pb in 23 surface waters of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) in China. Coefficients of variation with 66–260% reflected large spatial variations of concentrations of metals. Compared to drinking water guidelines established by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the primary trace metal pollution components (Al, B, V, and Zn) were above drinking water standard levels by 82.6%, 47.8%, 52.2%, and 52.2%, respectively. Preliminary risk assessments were determined via the Hazard Quotient (HQ) to evaluate the human health risk of these metals. HQingestion of V indicated potential deleterious health effects for residents. Hierarchical cluster results revealed that clusters 1, 2, and 3 were primarily affected by pollution from industrial and domestic activities, natural and agriculture activities, and oil fields, respectively. Principal component analysis results indicated Fe, Mn, Al, and Ba were controlled by natural sources, whereas anthropogenic activities led to high pollution levels of Al, B, V, Zn, and Sr. 相似文献

The distribution of Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, and Zn in sediment and surface water, and some physico-chemical characteristics of Orogodo river sediments, were evaluated. The sediment pH ranged from 5.1–7.3; conductivity values ranged from 34.5 to 389.0 μScm?1. Total nitrogen values ranged from 0.06–0.10%, NH3-N values ranged from 0.25–0.44 mgkg?1, percent total organic carbon ranged from 0.21–1.68%, and total phosphorus values ranged from 0.004–0.02% for dry and wet seasons. The sand fraction consists of 87–95%, silt fractions ranged from 0–2%, and clay fraction between 4–13%. The mean concentrations of metals (dry weight basis) in the streambed sediments ranged from 1.92–17.37 mgkg?1 for Cu, 0.98–4.78 mgkg?1 for Ni, 0.01–32.98 mgkg?1 for Mn, 353.22–2045.64 mgkg?1 for Fe, 69.96–100.16 mgkg?1 for Zn, 0.21–1.32 mgkg?1 for Cr, and Cd was less than 0.001 mgkg?1 for wet and dry seasons. The mean concentrations of metals in the surface water ranged between 0.01–0.05–0.05 mg/L for Cu, nd-0.11 mg/L for Ni, 0.001–0.31 mg/L for Pb, 0.001–1.82 mg/L Mn, 0.01–3.52 mg/L for Fe, 0.16–0.61 mg/L for Zn, nd-0.007 mg/L for Cr, and <0.001 mg/L for Cd. Based on principal component analysis, two main sources of metals in the Orogodo River can be identified: (i) Cr, Cu, Pb, and Fe are mainly derived from industrial sources; (ii) Mn, Zn, and Ni associated with traffic activities. No element examined had a contamination/pollution index value greater than unity (pollution ranges). This implies that the multiple pollution indices obtained from the analysis showed that Orogodo River sediments were not polluted with heavy metals. 相似文献

Sighting frequency and food habits of the leopard tortoise (Geochelone pardalis) were studied in northern Tanzania from October 1993 to June 1996. Sighting frequency varied significantly between protected (0.22 mhr?1) and unprotected sites (0.59 mhr?1), and between Arusha (0.27 mhr?1) and Serengeti sites (0.56 mhr?1). The tortoise diet comprised mostly plants (97.8%) and rarely inorganic matter (2.2%). A total of 47 plant species from 21 families was eaten. Forbs made up 74.5% of the plant items and monocots the remainder. Succulents contributed 51.0% of the plant items eaten while grasses and legumes accounted for 16.8% and 13.5%, respectively. Some plant items were eaten more frequently than their occurrence in the habitats. 相似文献

Observations were made of growth rate and variation in colour pattern of the leopard tortoise ( Geochelone pardalis babcocki ) in northern Tanzania between October 1993 and June 1996. Growth rate differed significantly between tortoises, with immature animals (6.9 ± 1.4 mm month−1 ) and females (5.7 ± 1.3 mm month−1 ) exhibiting higher rates of growth than adult animals (2.9 ± 0.8 mm month−1 ) and males (3.2 ± 1.1 mm month−1 ), respectively. The faster growth rate in immature animals suggested that growth rate declined with age. The difference in growth rates between the sexes was ascribed to sexual dimorphism, adult females being larger and therefore growing faster than males.
The carapacial colour pattern observed in the northern Tanzanian tortoises was generally similar to that described elsewhere in the species' range. The colour pattern varied between Arusha and Serengeti District tortoises. Animals at the Arusha sites tended to be sparsely coloured (55.6%) compared to the Serengeti tortoises, which had a buff colouration with radiating spots (89.3%).; The sparse colouration provides effective camouflage in the drier Arusha habitats, as does the buff colouration with black spots in the wetter, darker habitats in the Serengeti. 相似文献

This study examined Tessier's fractions of Pb, Cd, and As in the sediments and their potential toxic effects on four aquatic animals, i.e., Enchytraeus of Lumbricidae, Cipangopaludina chinensis of Viviparidae, Cybister japonicus Sharp of Dytiscidae, and Perccottus glenii Dybowski of Odontobutidae in Zhalong Wetland, Northeastern China. Results show that Cd poses a high risk to the biota in Zhalong Wetland. The geo-accumulation indices indicate that the region only has background concentrations of As, although it is slightly polluted by Pb and is seriously polluted by Cd. The exchangeable fraction receives minor contributions from these metals: 0.8% for Pb, 2.8% for Cd, and 4% for As. Three reed organs and four aquatic animal groups contain detectable concentrations of Pb, Cd, and As, with the following order of increasing concentrations: stem < rhizome < root < Viviparidae < Odontobutidae < Dytiscidae < Lumbricidae. Relatively low bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of As occurred in four aquatic organisms, whereas significantly higher BAFs of Pb and Cd were found in the earthworm than other aquatic organisms (P < 0.05). The earthworms (Enchytraeus of Lumbricidae) were recommended to be used as a suitable indicator for Pb, Cd, and As toxic risk level in this region. 相似文献

The effects of river flow diversion on biodiversity were assessed using Coleoptera as an indicator group in three habitats of the Kihansi Gorge (Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania), before and after commissioning of a hydropower plant. Data collected using sweep netting and pitfall traps showed that the effect of diversion of the river flow was site-specific, affecting particularly the spray habitat. Rarefaction analysis of both sweep netting and pitfall samples indicated that the expected richness of Coleoptera declined significantly in all habitats after commissioning of the power plant. Sweep netting and pitfall samples showed that the highest Shannon–Wiener diversity index value before the diversion of the river flow was in the spray zone, but the index value decreased after diversion. Changes in the other two habitats were less prominent. Analysis of variance using diversity index values from five pitfall samples in each habitat type before and after commissioning indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the diversity index between the two sampling periods or among the three habitat types. Renkonen's similarity index between habitats showed that pitfall samples had higher similarity (87%) than did samples from sweep netting (69%). It is suggested that for mitigation purposes, artificial spray systems, which have been installed in other wetlands of the Kihansi Gorge, also be installed to cover the whole Lower Wetland in which this study was undertaken. In order to maintain overall biodiversity in the Kihansi Gorge, it is suggested that the ecosystem conservation approach be prioritised. 相似文献

We investigated breeding seasonality and population dynamics of three rodent species, Lophuromys flavopuncatus, Grammomys dolichurus and Praomys delectorum, in the Magamba Forest, Western Usambara Mountains, north‐east Tanzania. Capture–mark–recapture studies were conducted in 2002–2004. Reproductive conditions of males and females showed temporal variations, an indication of breeding seasonality. Animals were reproductively active between February and May. Rainfall in November–January was instrumental for the onset of breeding and continued throughout the wet season. The recruitment of new individuals born during the season led to highest population densities between end of May and August. Populations declined progressively towards the end of the dry season (September–October). Only P. delectorum showed a marked density increase during January–February, indicating greater survival and/or recruitment during the November–January rains. The study shows that despite a relatively stable environment of the forest reserve, rainfall has strong influence on reproduction and population dynamics, probably because of its effect on primary food resources. 相似文献

Tsetse flies, the vectors of trypanosomiasis, represent a threat to public health and economy in sub‐Saharan Africa. Despite these concerns, information on temporal and spatial dynamics of tsetse and trypanosomes remain limited and may be a reason that control strategies are less effective. The current study assessed the temporal variation of the relative abundance of tsetse fly species and trypanosome prevalence in relation to climate in the Maasai Steppe of Tanzania in 2014–2015. Tsetse flies were captured using odor‐baited Epsilon traps deployed in ten sites selected through random subsampling of the major vegetation types in the area. Fly species were identified morphologically and trypanosome species classified using PCR. The climate dataset was acquired from the African Flood and Drought Monitor repository. Three species of tsetse flies were identified: G. swynnertoni (70.8%), G. m. morsitans (23.4%), and G.pallidipes (5.8%). All species showed monthly changes in abundance with most of the flies collected in July. The relative abundance of G. m. morsitans and G. swynnertoni was negatively correlated with maximum and minimum temperature, respectively. Three trypanosome species were recorded: T. vivax (82.1%), T. brucei (8.93%), and T. congolense (3.57%). The peak of trypanosome infections in the flies was found in October and was three months after the tsetse abundance peak; prevalence was negatively correlated with tsetse abundance. A strong positive relationship was found between trypanosome prevalence and temperature. In conclusion, we find that trypanosome prevalence is dependent on fly availability, and temperature drives both tsetse fly relative abundance and trypanosome prevalence. 相似文献

Patterns of revegetation on natural and human-caused disturbances in grasslands and savannas of the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, were investigated by recording species compositions on all disturbances, in the undisturbed vegetation, and in unique microhabitats in 51 sites along a north-to-south transect through the park. The 487 resulting samples were ordinated by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and classified by two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). Natural disturbances were, in most cases, ordinated near or classified together with the climax sample from the same site but human-caused disturbances were classified separately. Human disturbances from all regions of the park were classified together in one group, while natural disturbances were divided into communities associated with different rainfall regimes. Natural disturbances were revegetated by species growing in the surrounding undisturbed communities while human-caused disturbances were revegetated by a set of ruderal species not found in the undisturbed communities nor in natural disturbances.Plant nomenclature follows Clayton a.o. In this study, an assessment is made of the environmental impacts of heavy metal concentration and fractionation in bed sediments of the saline Maharlu Lake, SW Iran. Total elemental analysis indicated that sediments were highly enriched in Pb and Cd. Sequential extraction analysis revealed that salt of the lake is probably highly contaminated with Cd, Pb, and Co. Due to the oxidizing conditions of the lake, the organic matter fraction of the elements was not significant. In all sediments, Cd, Pb, Co, Mn, and Zn were strongly associated with exchangeable plus carbonate fractions, with mean percentage of 76.4%, 65.3%, 56%, 40.9%, and 34.3%, respectively. On average, the percentage of Ni associated with the sum of the exchangeable and carbonate fractions was 19.8%. Cr, Fe, and Cu fractionation indicated that these metals are environmentally inert and immobile. Statistical relationships among metal fractions and sediment properties showed that Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, and Mn were mainly from recent anthropogenic sources, while such sources were less important for Cr, Cu, and Fe. Surface water has been extracted from Arusha National Park (ANP) to meet human demand for over 30 years; however, there has been no evaluation of the impact of extraction on surface water quality, budget or ecological integrity. A reduction in water availability and flow is likely to also have impacts on the distribution and space use of large mammals. To assess the surface water quality and budget, 30 water sources were measured for three months over the dry and wet seasons. Nearly 70% of water is extracted, with the complete extraction of surface water common during the dry and early wet seasons. However, extraction did not lead to a decrease in downstream water quality, but wetland plant diversity was highest in areas with no surface water extraction. Extraction also influences large mammal space use: abundance along seven transects was typically higher upstream of extraction sites, especially in the case of large herbivores. Impacts of extraction therefore include the disconnection of streams, changes in space use of large mammals, decreases in plant diversity and changes in species composition of the riparian wetlands. We therefore recommend that monitoring and evaluation of extraction as well as sustainable water use practices be introduced as a matter of urgency. 相似文献

This study was aimed to examine the risk of chronic arsenic (As) exposure for the residents living in Nui Phao, Thai Nguyen in the northern Vietnam. Groundwater, vegetables, human hair, and nail samples were collected from volunteers living in Nui Phao. The results revealed that 75% of the groundwater samples had As exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water guideline of 10 µg L?1. The result of As concentration for most of the vegetable samples was greater than the WHO/FAO safe (0.1?mg kg?1). The result of hair and nail samples in this study showed that 3.5 and 20% of the samples had As concentration exceeding the level of As toxicity in hair and nails, respectively. The result of health risks indicated that the potential health risk of As contamination is greater for groundwater than vegetables. The total hazard quotient (HQ) value through vegetables ingestion and drinking water exceeded 1.0 suggesting potential health risk for local residents. The calculation of potential carcinogenic risk through both consumption of vegetables and drinking water was low cancer risk in adults. Other food sources and the exposure pathways are needed to exactly assess health risks in this area. 相似文献

Bengal Basin is known for severe arsenic contamination. In the present study, we have isolated six bacteria from the arsenic contaminated surface water of Bengal Basin. 16S rDNA sequence analysis identified them as Microbacterium oleivorans, Acinetobacter soli, Acinetobacter venetianus, Acinetobacter junii, Acinetobacter baumannii, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus. All the isolates possess arsenic accumulation potential and high molecular weight plasmid (>10 kb). PCR amplification indicated the presence of arsenic-resistance genes (arsB and aoxB) either in the genome or plasmid or in both in the isolated bacteria (except in Acinetobacter venetianus). Mating among closely‐related individuals in small and isolated plant populations may result in reduced vigour of the inbred offspring, i.e. inbreeding depression, especially in naturally outbreeding plants. Occurrence of inbreeding and inbreeding depression was studied in Saintpaulia ionantha ssp. grotei, a threatened endemic plant species with a narrow ecological amplitude from the East Usambara Mountains. The level of inbreeding (measured as the fixation index, F) was investigated in twelve populations by analyzing variation at one microsatellite marker locus. The effect of one generation of selfing and outcrossing on the progeny fitness was studied by controlled crosses in two small patches that differ in the level isolation. The fixation index (F) across the populations was on the average 0.21 and varied among the populations from substantial inbreeding (F = 0.58) to surplus heterozygosity (F = −0.29). High inbreeding depression (δ) was observed at early and late stages of the life‐cycle. The isolated patch exhibited lower inbreeding depression than did the non‐isolated patch. The results of this study suggest that inbreeding and subsequent inbreeding depression are potential threats to the survival of Saintpaulia populations. 相似文献

Lime, sepiolite and peat were used as amendments to study their effects on the chemical speciation of Cd and Pb in a polluted paddy soil under moist and water-logged conditions. The results showed that application of amendments reduced acid-extractable Cd (up to 12.56% and 5.07%) and Pb (up to 6.69% and 2.68%) in moist and water-logged soils, respectively. The reducible Cd and residual Cd was increased while the oxidizable Cd was decreased after adding amendments. However, the oxidizable Pb was increased while the residual Pb was decreased in amended soil, and the reducible Pb presented a different changing trend under moist and water-logged conditions. The soil pH was significantly correlated with different fractions of Cd and Pb in soil, which indicated a distinct influence of soil pH on the redistribution process of Cd and Pb fractions in amended soil. 相似文献

Trace metals concentrations in sediments from the Egyptian Mediterranean coast were determined to evaluate the levels of contamination. The highest concentrations of metals were generally found in the middle region of the coast. Sediment pollution assessment was carried out using Enrichment Factor (EF), Geoaccumulation Factor (Igeo), Contamination Factor (CF), Modified Degree of Contamination (mCd), and Pollution Load Index (PLI). Association of adverse effects to aquatic life was determined using the classification of sediments according to three sets of sediment quality guidelines. The mean EF values were found to fall in the following sequence: Cr > Pb > Ni > Zn > Cu > Mn. The results demonstrated that the EF of metals in the sediments of the middle region was lower than those recorded in the western region and Rafah Station at the eastern region; the difference in the EF levels was significantly correlated with Fe concentrations along the study area. Based on the average Igeo of target elements, the Egyptian Mediterranean coast could be considered not polluted with Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn (Igeo ≤ 0). The modified degree of contamination was >1.5, indicating zero to very low contamination. The calculated PLI were less than 1, indicating only baseline levels of pollution. There were small differences between the results obtained with the three used SQGs. Highly significant correlations were found between the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Co, Cr, and Ni, suggesting similar sources and/or similar geochemical processes controlling the occurrence of these metals in the sediments. 相似文献
