Background and aims

Plants absorb and carry soluble silica from soils and then deposit SiO2?·?nH2O within themselves producing amorphous silica particles known as phytoliths. Trace amount of organic carbon is occluded during phytolith formation referred to as phytolith-occluded carbon (PhytOC). This carbon fraction has been recognized as an important way of carbon biosequestration. Previous studies have investigated the PhytOC contents of many crop plants and their contribution to global carbon sink. However, the PhytOC in soil is less focused. In this study, we investigated the distribution of soil PhytOC in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP).

Methods

Twenty-six soil profiles were collected in the Chinese Loess Plateau. A wet oxidation method was used for phytolith extraction. Occluded carbon was determined by element analyzer.

Results

Our results showed that the soil PhytOC density (SPCD) ranged from 0.757 to 23.110 g/m2 among different soil profiles. The SPCD of profiles in the Southern CLP was generally higher than that in the Northern CLP. It was estimated that 5.35 Mt of PhytOC was stored in the upper soil of the CLP. We also estimated the annual phytolith flux into the Yellow River from the CLP by soil erosion and about 2.5 Mt of phytoliths eroded and transported into rivers per year.

Conclusions

Our study indicated that PhytOC was one of the potential biosequestration way and phytoliths had an important influence on biogeochemical cycle of silica. Our results suggested that the soil PhytOC was mainly influenced by different plant communities.  相似文献

Biochar from Miscanthus: a potential silicon fertilizer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Background and aims

Silicon (Si) is largely recognized to improve plant growth subjected to various biotic and abiotic stresses. As plants accumulate Si in the form of readily-soluble phytolith, we examine the possibility of using phytolith-rich biochar as a bio-available Si source for increasing the agronomical productivity of Si high-accumulator plants while augmenting soil fertility and C sequestration.

Methods

By adding three different biochars (Miscanthus x giganteus straws, coffee husks and woody material) at two different concentrations (1 % and 3 %; w/w) to soil samples, we investigated the effects on the soil respiration, the chemical characteristics and the kinetic release of bio-available Si (CaCl2-extractable Si).

Results

Here we show that the biochar from Miscanthus straws was the most attractive amendment. Its incorporation at a 3 % rate improved the soil fertility parameters (pH and available cations) and combined the highest mean residence time of carbon (C) in soil (MRT?=?50 years) with the highest rate of release of bio-available Si. We attribute this result to the presence of phytoliths in this biochar, as revealed by SEM-EDS analysis.

Conclusions

Not only did the biochar from Miscanthus enhance both soil C sequestration and fertility, but the results of this study suggest that it can also be considered as a potential source of bio-available Si. Although our conclusions should be substantiated in the field, we suggest that Miscanthus biochar could be used as a potential source of bio-available silicon for the culture of such crop as Si-accumulator plants growing, for instance, in highly weathered tropical soils with low content in carbon, nutrients and bio-available Si.  相似文献

Background and aims

Phytolith occluded carbon (PhytOC) is of interest for isotope studies, dating of sediments and the capture and storage of carbon. Many methodologies have been used for the isolation of phytoliths from plant material; however, there are wide disparities in the PhytOC contents when determined by different methodologies. In this study we examine the utility of the two main methods used for quantifying PhytOC.

Methods

These methods are: (1) a microwave digestion followed by a Walkley-Black digestion, and (2) H2SO4/H2O2.

Results

Method (1) produced PhytOC values over 50 times higher than those acquired by method (2). SEM examination indicated that the differences were likely due to shattering of the phytoliths by method (2) allowing consumption by the acid and peroxide of PhytOC .

Conclusion

These results indicate that for the samples analysed here: 1] the modified microwave method allowed the total PhytOC to be measured, 2] the H2SO4/H2O2 method allowed the PhytOC within the tightly packed silica matrix to be measured, and 3] the PhytOC retained within the phytolith cavities could possibly be calculated by subtracting 2] from 1]. For the samples analysed here most of the PhytOC resided in the phytolith cavities.  相似文献

Aims

Carbon (C) bio-sequestration within the phytoliths of plants, a mechanism of long-term biogeochemical C sequestration, may play a major role in the global C cycle and climate change. In this study, we explored the potential of C bio-sequestration within phytoliths produced in cultivated rice (Oryza sativa), a well known silicon accumulator.

Methods

The rice phytolith extraction was undertaken with microwave digestion procedures and the determination of occluded C in phytoliths was based on dissolution methods of phytolith-Si.

Results

Chemical analysis indicates that the phytolith-occluded C (PhytOC) contents of the different organs (leaf, stem, sheath and grains) on a dry weight basis in 5 rice cultivars range from 0.4 mg?g?1 to 2.8 mg?g?1, and the C content of phytoliths from grains is much lower than that of leaf, stem and sheath. The data also show that the PhytOC content of rice depends on both the content of phytoliths and the efficiency of C occlusion within phytoliths during rice growth. The biogeochemical C sequestration flux of phytoliths in 5 rice cultivars is approximately 0.03–0.13 Mg of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents (Mg-e-CO2) ha?1?year?1. From 1950 to 2010, about 2.37?×?108?Mg of CO2 equivalents might have been sequestrated within the rice phytoliths in China. Assuming a maximum phytoliths C bio-sequestration flux of 0.13 Mg-e-CO2 ha?1?year?1, the global annual potential rate of CO2 sequestrated in rice phytoliths would approximately be 1.94?×?107?Mg.

Conclusions

Therefore rice crops may play a significant role in long-term C sequestration through the formation of PhytOC.  相似文献

Background and aims

Seasonally flooded South American savannas harbor different kinds of mound-field landscapes of largely unknown origin. A recent study used soil carbon-isotope depth profiles and other proxies to infer vegetation history in murundu landscapes in Brazil. Results suggested that differential erosion, not building-up processes (e.g., termite mounds), produced mounds. We tested this approach to inferring mound origin in a mound-field landscape in French Guiana.

Methods

We examined carbon-isotope depth profiles of soil organic matter, phytolith profiles and contemporary vegetation composition in mounds and inter-mounds.

Results

Relative abundance of C3 and C4 plants across habitats was very different from that in murundu landscapes; C3 plants were better represented in inter-mounds than on mounds. Habitat differences in C3/C4 distribution were subtler than in murundu landscapes, limiting inference of vegetation history based on carbon isotopes. Still, carbon-isotope and phytolith depth profiles gave similar pictures of vegetation history, both favoring a building-up hypothesis, corroborating other evidence that these mounds are vestiges of ancient agricultural raised fields.

Conclusions

Carbon-isotope depth profiles are unlikely to be adequate for deciphering origin of mound-field landscapes from vegetation history in seasonally flooded savannas. Including data on current vegetation and phytoliths makes inferences more robust.  相似文献

Aims

A pot study spanning four consecutive crop seasons was conducted to compare the effects of successive rice straw biochar/rice straw amendments on C sequestration and soil fertility in rice/wheat rotated paddy soil.

Methods

We adopted 4.5 t ha?1, 9.0 t ha?1 biochar and 3.75 t ha?1 straw for each crop season with an identical dose of NPK fertilizers.

Results

We found no major losses of biochar-C over the 2-year experimental period. Obvious reductions in CH4 emission were observed from rice seasons under the biochar application, despite the fact that the biochar brought more C into the soil than the straw. N2O emissions with biochar were similar to the controls without additives over the 2-year experimental period. Biochar application had positive effects on crop growth, along with positive effects on nutrient (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) uptake by crop plants and the availability of soil P, K, Ca and Mg. High levels of biochar application over the course of the crop rotation suppressed NH3 volatilization in the rice season, but stimulated it in the wheat season.

Conclusions

Converting straw to biochar followed by successive application to soil is viable for soil C sequestration, CH4 mitigation, improvements of soil and crop productivity. Biochar soil amendment influences NH3 volatilization differently in the flooded rice and upland wheat seasons, respectively.  相似文献

The physiological and anatomical responses of different concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mM sodium silicate) of Si foliar-application in improving the chilling tolerance of Dendrocalamus brandisii plantlets were investigated. The Si-supplemented D. brandisii plantlets exhibited better chilling tolerance, associated with the enhancement of photosynthetic pigment and soluble sugar and starch content, increasing CAT and SOD activities and decreasing MDA and H2O2 level, as well as thicker leaf blades and mesophyll tissues. Furthermore, distinct changes in phytolith morphology were observed, including formation of a new phytolith morphotype (dumb-bell with nodular shark), significantly higher frequency of elongated phytoliths, and the increased length of elongated and elliptical phytoliths. Results indicated the physiological and anatomical response showed weak positive linkage with increasing amount of silicon applied, and the 1.0 mM sodium silicate on D. brandisii plantlet leaves was the most effective treatment in enhancing chilling tolerance.  相似文献

Key message

Factors influencing branch growth differed between a qualitative element (whether a branch grows) and a quantitative element (the amount of biomass accretion).

Abstract

We measured branch growth in saplings of four evergreen broad-leaved tree species growing in a temperate Japanese forest. A hierarchical Bayesian approach was used to model two elements of branch growth: a qualitative component [whether branches produce new annual shoots (ASn)] and a quantitative component (total ASn mass). The two components were influenced by somewhat different factors. The probability that a branch would produce ASn was affected by the total mass of previous-year annual shoots (total ASn–1 mass), branch age, relative branch height, canopy openness measured at the branch tip, maximum canopy openness within a single sapling, and the interaction between canopy openness and maximum canopy openness. The total ASn mass was influenced by the total ASn–1 mass, relative branch height, branch inclination, and maximum canopy openness. These two components of branch growth should be considered separately when tree architecture is modeled. In addition, we detected interactive responses among branches within individual saplings. The relative importance of interactive modular response and branch autonomy may differ depending on the status of plants, such as individual age, environmental conditions, and the timing of the measurements. We found considerable similarities in the responses of branch growth to the internal and environmental factors among the species studied. We also found some among-species differences in branch growth responses to the explanatory variables measured.  相似文献

Aims

Two pot experiments in a “walk-in” growth chamber with controlled day and night temperatures were conducted to investigate the influence of elevated temperatures along with rice straw incorporation on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions as well as rice yield.

Methods

Three temperature regimes–29/25, 32/25, and 35/30 °C (Exp. I) and 29/22, 32/25, and 35/28 °C (Exp. II), representing daily maxima/minima were used in the study. Two amounts of rice straw (0 and 6 t ha?1) were applied with four replications in each temperature regime. CH4 and N2O emissions as well as soil redox potential (Eh) were monitored weekly throughout the rice-growing period.

Results

Elevated temperatures increased CH4 emission rates, with a more pronounced effect from flowering to maturity. The increase in emissions was further enhanced by incorporation of rice straw. A decrease in soil Eh to <?100 mV and CH4 emissions was observed early in rice straw–incorporated pots while the soil without straw did not reach negative Eh levels (Exp. I) or showed a delayed decrease (Exp. II). Moreover, soil with high organic C (Exp. II) had higher CH4 emissions. In contrast to CH4 emissions, N2O emissions were negligible during the rice-growing season. The global warming potential (GWP) was highest at high temperature with rice straw incorporation compared with low temperature without rice straw. On the other hand, the high temperature significantly increased spikelet sterility and reduced grain yield (p?<?0.05).

Conclusions

Elevated temperature increased GWP while decreased rice yield. This suggests that global warming may result in a double negative effect: higher emissions and lower yields.  相似文献

Aims

Plant species can influence fire intensity and severity causing different immediate and long-term responses on the soil microbial community. The main objective of this work was to determine the role of two representative Mediterranean plant species as soil organic matter sources, and to identify their influence on microbial response before and after heat exposure.

Methods

A laboratory heating experiment (300 °C for 20 min) was performed using soil collected under Pinus hallepensis (PIN) and Quercus coccifera (KER). Dried plant material was added before heating for a total of six different treatments: non-heated control samples amended with the original plant material (PIN0 and KER0); PIN samples heated with pine (PINp) or kermes oak litter (PINk); KER samples heated with kermes oak (KERk) or pine litter (KERp). Heated soils were inoculated with the original fresh soil and different microbial parameters related to abundance, activity and possible changes in microbial community composition and chemical soil parameters that could be conditioning microbial response were measured for 28 days after inoculation.

Results

The effect of heating on the soil microbial parameters studied was influenced to a small extent by the plant species providing fuel, being evident in soil samples taken under pine influence. Nevertheless heating effect showed marked differences when plant species influence on soil origin was analyzed.

Conclusions

In general, samples taken under pine appear to be more negatively affected by heating treatment than samples collected under kermes oak, highlighting the importance of vegetation as a fresh organic matter source in soil ecosystems before and after fire.  相似文献

Aims

Phytomanagement of metal-polluted soils requires information on plant responses to metal availability in soil, but the predictability of metal accumulation in plant shoots and/or roots may be limited by metal toxicity and inherent shortfalls of the bioavailability assays.

Methods

We measured the uptake of Cd and Zn in a Salix smithiana clone grown in a pot experiment on soils with different characteristics and metal availabilities, determined by conventional soil single extractions (0.05 M Na2-EDTA and 1 M NH4NO3), soil solution obtained by centrifugation, and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT). The Cd and Zn phytoavailability after a 2-year phytoextraction by willow was assessed by metal accumulation in the straw of the following barley culture.

Results

The phytoextraction efficiency was largest on a moderately polluted acid soil. Biomass and shoot Zn concentrations of S. smithiana were better predicted by DGT-measured Zn concentrations in soil solution (C DGT) than by Zn concentrations in the soil solution and extractable soil fractions. The weaker correlation for Cd in shoots may be related to relative Cd enrichment in the plant tissues. The metal accumulation in barley straw was unaffected or increased after a 2-year phytoextraction.

Conclusions

The shoot Zn and Cd removal of the tested Salix clone can be predicted by C DGT concentrations and is highest on either calcareous or moderately polluted acid soils. Single extraction with NH4NO3 and the C DGT value of Cd were not able to predict shoot Cd removal on the tested soils. Only shoot removal of Zn was predicted fairly well by the C DGT value.  相似文献

Introduction

In a recent paper, Warren et al. (2013) illustrated the potential of neutron radiography to visualize water dynamics in soil and plants.

Methods

After injection of deuterated water (D2O) in soil, the authors could monitor the changes of D2O concentration in roots.

Results

Based on the radiographs, the authors concluded that D2O was transported from roots growing in a wet soil region to roots in a dry region, proving hydraulic redistribution between roots. However, this interpretation depends on the correct estimation of D2O concentration in soil.

Conclusions

The experiments of Warren et al. (2013) could also be explained by diffusion of D2O from soil to roots, without hydraulic redistribution within the root system.  相似文献

Silica phytoliths are microscopic structures of amorphous hydrated silica (SiO2·nH2O) formed by specialized plant cells. Besides their biological roles, physical, chemical, and structural properties of biogenic silica offer a wide spectrum of applications in many fields of industry and technology. Therefore, processes involved in their formation recently become a very interesting topic to study. However, optical transparency and microscopic sizes of silica phytoliths do not allow their visualization and localization by classical light microscopy methods. Their observation thus requires phytolith isolation, technically difficult or lengthy sample preparation procedures, or a work with toxic chemicals. In this paper we are proposing a novel method for visualization of silica phytoliths in Sorghum bicolor root endodermal cells by fluorescence microscopy using alkali mounting solution (pH 12). This method offers an easy and quick preparation of the samples and high contrast imaging. Based on our results we can assume that the proposed fluorescent method for silica phytolith investigation allows observation of multiple samples in relatively short time period and thus might be applicable also for high-throughput screenings. Using this method we found out that after a 3-day cultivation of sorghum plants the minimal needed concentration of sodium silicate, limiting the formation of silica phytoliths in the root endodermis, was 25 µmol dm?3. The positive correlation of sodium silicate concentration in the substrate with the phytolith diameter was also observed.  相似文献

Aims

To assess the effects of atmospheric N deposition on the C budget of an alpine meadow ecosystem on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, it is necessary to explore the responses of soil-atmosphere carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange to N addition.

Methods

Based on a multi-form, low-level N addition experiment, soil CO2 effluxes were monitored weekly using the static chamber and gas chromatograph technique. Soil variables and aboveground biomass were measured monthly to examine the key driving factors of soil CO2 efflux.

Results

The results showed that low-level N input tended to decrease soil moisture, whereas medium-level N input maintained soil moisture. Three-year N additions slightly increased soil inorganic N pools, especially the soil NH 4 + -N pool. N applications significantly increased aboveground biomass and soil CO2 efflux; moreover, this effect was more significant from NH 4 + -N than from NO 3 ? -N fertilizer. In addition, the soil CO2 efflux was mainly driven by soil temperature, followed by aboveground biomass and NH 4 + -N pool.

Conclusions

These results suggest that chronic atmospheric N deposition will stimulate soil CO2 efflux in the alpine meadow on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau by increasing available N content and promoting plant growth.  相似文献

Aims

Two field microcosm experiments and 15N labeling techniques were used to investigate the effects of biochar addition on rice N nutrition and GHG emissions in an Inceptisol and an Ultisol.

Methods

Biochar N bioavailability and effect of biochar on fertilizer nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) were studied by 15N-enriched wheat biochar (7.8803 atom% 15N) and fertilizer urea (5.0026 atom% 15N) (Experiment I). Corn biochar and corn stalks were applied at 12 Mg?ha?1 to study their effects on GHG emissions (Experiment II).

Results

Biochar had no significant impact on rice production and less than 2 % of the biochar N was available to plants in the first season. Biochar addition increased soil C and N contents and decreased urea NUE. Seasonal cumulative CH4 emissions with biochar were similar to the controls, but significantly lower than the local practice of straw amendment. N2O emissions with biochar were similar to the control in the acidic Ultisol, but significantly higher in the slightly alkaline Inceptisol. Carbon-balance calculations found no major losses of biochar-C.

Conclusion

Low bio-availability of biochar N did not make a significantly impact on rice production or N nutrition during the first year. Replacement of straw amendments with biochar could decrease CH4 emissions and increase SOC stocks.  相似文献

Key message

fap 1 mutation is caused by a G174A change in GmKASIIIA that disrupts a donor splice site recognition and creates a GATCTG motif that enhanced its expression.

Abstract

Soybean oil with reduced palmitic acid content is desirable to reduce the health risks associated with consumption of this fatty acid. The objectives of this study were: to identify the genomic location of the reduced palmitate fap1 mutation, determine its molecular basis, estimate the amount of phenotypic variation in fatty acid composition explained by this locus, determine if there are epistatic interactions between the fap1 and fap nc loci and, determine if the fap1 mutation has pleiotropic effects on seed yield, oil and protein content in three soybean populations. This study detected two major QTL for 16:0 content located in chromosome 5 (GmFATB1a, fap nc) and chromosome 9 near BARCSOYSSR_09_1707 that explained, with their interaction, 66–94 % of the variation in 16:0 content in the three populations. Sequencing results of a putative candidate gene, GmKASIIIA, revealed a single unique polymorphism in the germplasm line C1726, which was predicted to disrupt the donor splice site recognition between exon one and intron one and produce a truncated KASIIIA protein. This G to A change also created the GATCTG motif that enhanced gene expression of the mutated GmKASIIIA gene. Lines homozygous for the GmKASIIIA mutation (fap1) had a significant reduction in 16:0, 18:0, and oil content; and an increase in unsaturated fatty acids content. There were significant epistatic interactions between GmKASIIIA (fap1) and fap nc for 16:0 and oil contents, and seed yield in two populations. In conclusion, the fap1 phenotype is caused by a single unique SNP in the GmKASIIIA gene.  相似文献

Background and aims

Plant physiological traits and their relation to soil N availability was investigated as regulators of the distribution of understory shrub species along a slope in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantation in central Japan.

Methods

At the study site, previous studies demonstrated that both net and gross soil nitrification rates are high on the lower slope and there are dramatic declines in different sections of the slope gradient. We examined the distributions of understory plant species and their nitrate (NO 3 ? -N) use traits, and compared the results with the soil traits.

Results

Our results show that boundaries between different dominant understory species correspond to boundaries between different soil types. Leucosceptrum stellipilum occurs on soil with high net and gross nitrification rates. Hydrangea hirta is dominant on soil with high net and low gross nitrification rates. Pieris japonica occurs on soil with very low net and gross nitrification rates. Dominant understory species have species-specific physiological traits in their use of NO 3 ? -N. Pieris japonica lacks the capacity to use NO 3 ? -N as a N source, but other species do use NO 3 ? -N. Lindera triloba, whose distribution is unrelated to soil NO 3 ? -N availability, changes the extent to which it uses NO 3 ? -N in response to soil NO 3 ? -N availability.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that differences in the physiological capabilities and adaptabilities of plant species in using NO 3 ? -N as a N source regulate their distribution ranges. The identity of the major form of available soil N is therefore an environmental factor that influences plant distributions.  相似文献

Background and aims

Increasing the concentrations of the essential micronutrient Zn in staple crops like grain is desirable for human nutrition. We investigated the long-term ability of municipal treatment works sewage sludge, liquid sewage sludge and ZnCO3 applied to soils to increase Zn in in wheat grain (Triticum aestivum L.) in a number of field experiments conducted on different soils.

Methods

We used six long-term field experiments that were set up on contrasting soils in England and the target applications were built up between 1994 and 1997. Topsoil samples and harvested grain samples were taken and air dried in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005. Relationships between grain Zn concentrations and soil properties and changes with time were examined.

Results

Wheat grain Zn concentrations increased with soil Zn concentrations in a similar log-log relationship with all of the Zn sources tested. Comparing total or extractable Zn in soil as explanatory factors showed little benefit of using extractable Zn measurements to predict grain concentrations over total Zn. Additional factors such as soil pH or organic carbon did not explain much more of the variation in grain Zn in our experiments. However, grain Zn concentrations did not respond at all at a site with pH 7.7.

Conclusions

Sewage sludge applications to soil can increase grain Zn concentrations for at least 2 to 8?years after application and has similar effectiveness to ZnCO3.  相似文献

Background and aims

Under chronically elevated N deposition, N retention mainly occur at high soil C-to-N ratio. This may be mediated through soil microbes, such as ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi, saprotrophic fungi and bacteria, and the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between soil microbes and forest floor C-to-N ratios.

Methods

Soil samples from 33 Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst) forests in Denmark and southern Sweden in a forest floor C-to-N ratio gradient (ranging from 14 to 35) were analysed regarding the content of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) to estimate their soil microbial community composition and the relative biomasses of different microbial groups. The relation of EM biomass to total fungal biomass was estimated as the loss of the fungal PLFA 18:2ω6,9 during incubation of soils and the production of EM mycelia was estimated using fungal in-growth mesh bags. The soil microbial variables were correlated to forest floor C-to-N ratio, NO 3 - leaching, soil pH and stand age.

Results

Fungal proportions of microbial biomass, EM to total fungi and EM mycelial production were all positively related to C-to-N ratio, while NO 3 - leaching was negatively related to C-to-N ratio.

Conclusions

Both EM and saprotrophic fungi change with forest floor C-to-N ratios and appear to play a central role in N retention in forest soil. A better understanding of the mechanisms behind this process may be revealed if the role of recalcitrant fungal metabolites for N retention (and soil C sequestration) can be identified. Research along this line deserves further studies.  相似文献
