Equations for the motion of an individual dust grain in the double layer of a negatively charged cylindrical probe in a glow discharge plasma are derived and solved numerically. The distribution of the electric potential near the probe is determined, and the grain charge is calculated as a function of the distance from the probe for different probe potentials. The trajectories of grains with different initial energies are traced. An analysis of the grain trajectories shows that, at a certain distance from the probe, high-energy grains may be recharged; i.e., the grain charge may change sign. The grains are found to have no direct effect on the probe current in a dusty plasma of a glow discharge.  相似文献

Results from experimental studies of ordered dust structures in plasma are reviewed. The experimental conditions and the data on the grain size and intergrain distance in plasma dust crystals are analyzed. It is shown that intergrain distance is a function of the grain size. The range of the ratio of the dust grain size to the Debye radius within which plasma dust crystals can form is determined. A volume cell surrounding a dust grain in plasma is considered. It is found that the potential and charge of the grain depend substantially on the intergrain distance. The charge, potential, and potential energy of a dust grain in a plasma dust crystal, as well as the electrostatic force exerted by the plasma field on the grain, are calculated by the method of molecular dynamics as functions of the intergrain distance. The corresponding analytic approximations and the criterion for the establishment of a steady-state intergrain distance are proposed.  相似文献

The possibility is studied of the formation of ordered dust-grain structures in a low-temperature thermal plasma consisting of electrons, ions, and micron-sized charged dust grains. The range of the required values of the coupling parameter Γ defining the degree to which the plasma is nonideal is calculated using the results of diagnostic measurements carried out in a plasma consisting of combustion products of propane in air with grains of different materials. The results obtained show that the most favorable conditions for the formation of strongly correlated grain structures (for both positively and negatively charged grains) take place at the maximum grain number density and a plasma temperature close to the minimum flame temperature (∼1600 K). In this case, the optimum grain radii lie in the range 4–10 μm and the maximum value of the parameter Γ is less than 200. Since the calculated values of Γ give an upper estimate, liquidlike ordered structures are most likely to form in a thermal plasma. Based on the results of the analysis, it is stated that an increase in the parameter Γ and, accordingly, the formation of plasma-crystal structures in a thermal plasma can only occur for positively charged grains. __________ Translated from Fizika Plazmy, Vol. 26, No. 7, 2000, pp. 626–632. The screening of the grain charge in a nonequilibrium plasma is studied with allowance for electron and ion fluxes to the grain surface and the bulk processes of production and loss of charged particles in an argon plasma. The objective of the paper is to investigate how the conversion of monatomic Ar+ ions into diatomic Ar2+ ions influences the screening of the dust grain charge in a plasma produced by an external gas ionization source. It is found that the conversion of positive ions leads to the onset of a second ion species in the plasma and, as a consequence, to a three-exponential screening of the grain charge; moreover, in a certain range of plasma parameters, all three screening constants are of the same order of magnitude. Analytical results are compared with the data of numerical simulations carried out based on the drift-diffusion approximation.  相似文献

A model of dust grain charging is constructed using the method of moments. The dust grain charging process in a weakly ionized helium plasma produced by a 100-keV electron beam at atmospheric pressure is studied theoretically. In simulations, the beam current density was varied from 1 to 106 μA/cm2. It is shown that, in a He plasma, dust grains of radius 5 μm and larger perturb the electron temperature only slightly, although the reduced electric field near the grain reaches 8 Td, the beam current density being 106 μA/cm2. It is found that, at distances from the grain that are up to several tens or hundreds of times larger than its radius, the electron and ion densities are lower than their equilibrium values. Conditions are determined under which the charging process may be described by a model with constant electron transport coefficients. The dust grain charge is shown to be weakly affected by secondary electron emission. In a beam-produced helium plasma, the dust grain potential calculated in the drift-diffusion model is shown to be close to that calculated in the orbit motion limited model. It is found that, in the vicinity of a body perturbing the plasma, there may be no quasineutral plasma presheath with an ambipolar diffusion of charged particles. The conditions for the onset of this presheath in a beam-produced plasma are determined. __________ Translated from Fizika Plazmy, Vol. 29, No. 3, 2003, pp. 214–226. The formation of the ion flow to a dust grain and the distribution of the electric potential in a low-pressure dusty plasma are investigated theoretically with allowance for ionization in the intergrain space. Poisson’s equation similar to the Langmuir plasma-sheath equation is solved numerically with the use of partial analytic solutions at the boundary of the Seitz-Wigner cell and in thin layers in the intergrain space. The charge and potential of a dust grain are found as functions of the grain radius and cell size. The grain potential and the total cell potential energy as functions of the cell size display weak minima, whose positions correspond to the observed intergrain distance in dusty crystals.  相似文献

Results are presented from Monte Carlo calculations of the electric charge of dust grains in a plasma produced during the slowing down of the radioactive decay products of californium nuclei in neon. The dust grain charging is explained for the first time as being due to the drift of electrons and ions in an external electric field. It is shown that the charges of the grains depend on their coordinates and strongly fluctuate with time. The time-averaged grain charges agree with the experimental data obtained on ordered liquidlike dust structures in a nuclear-track plasma. The time-averaged dust grain charges are used to carry out computer modeling of the formation of dynamic vortex structures observed in experiments. Evidence is obtained of the fact that the electrostatic forces experienced by the dust grains are potential in character.  相似文献

A pig model was used to investigate the difference in metabolic response of plasma between whole grain wheat and wheat aleurone. Six pigs were fed in a cross-over design iso dietary fiber (DF) breads prepared from whole grain wheat and wheat aleurone and with a wash-out diet based on bread produced from refined wheat flour made iso-DF by adding Vitacel. The pigs were fitted with catheters in the mesenteric artery and the portal vein, which allow studying the enrichment of nutrient in plasma after passing the gastrointestinal tract. LC–MS measurements showed the presence of oxygenated fatty acids (oxylipins) in the plasma of pigs and with discrimination between whole grain wheat versus wheat aleurone and refined flour. The oxylipin-marker of this difference was identified as a mixture of 13-hydroxy-9,11-octadecadienoic and 9-hydroxy-10,12-octadecadienoic acid (13-HODE and 9-HODE). Similar oxylipins were also found in the flour and the bread consumed by pigs. Since the germ is part of the whole grain flour, the germ is most likely responsible for the elevated level of oxylipins in plasma after whole grain wheat consumption. This finding may also point towards bioactive compounds, which can be used as novel lipid candidate biomarkers of whole grain intake versus aleurone. Principal component analysis discriminated between venous and arterial plasma samples. We identified glycine conjugated and unconjugated bile acids to be responsible for this discrimination. Moreover we discovered the existence of unsaturated bile acid in the plasma of pigs.  相似文献

Pollen hydration and germination on the "wet" stigma of Nicotiana tabacum L. were studied by SEM and TEM to reveal the role of the stigma in selecting the germinative pore, and in establishing the axis of polarity in the pollen grain. Pollinated stigmas were fixed with glutaraldehyde or osmium tetroxide vapour, or processed with rapid freeze fixation and freeze substitution. Fixation was performed in 5, 15 or 30 min and 3.5 h after pollination. The tube easily emerged from either pore, this process not depending on the pollen grain orientation relative to the stigma. The orientation of pollen tubes remained random till their length becomes longer than the pollen grain diameter. The TEM analysis of ultrastructural changes in poral regions during pollen hydration and germination showed that the germinative pore was positioned just near the generative cell and vegetative nucleus. Within the first 5 min after pollination a new layer of the electron-lucent wall adjacent to the plasma membrane was formed in the region of a future germinative pore. Following 15 min, marked changes were revealed in the cytoplasm region, close to the germinative pore. Minute dictyosome vesicles were accumulated near the plasma membrane. Small mitochondria and short ER cisternae were distal to a zone of secretory vesicles. The data suggest that the axis of polarity in the germinating pollen grain is predetermined by a spatial organization of the vegetative cell.  相似文献

The potential of a slowly moving test charge in a positive-dust-electron plasma is calculated taking into account dust grain charge fluctuations, as well as collisions between neutral atoms and electrons and dust grains. The results should be useful for understanding the shielding in a dusty plasma sheath with levitated grains.  相似文献

The propagation of weakly nonlinear dust sound waves in a dusty plasma containing two different-temperature ion species is explored. The nonlinear equations describing both the quadratic and cubic plasma nonlinearities are derived. It is shown that the properties of dust sound waves depend substantially on the grain size distribution. In particular, for solitary dust sound waves with a positive potential to exist in a plasma with distributed grain size, it is necessary that the difference between the temperatures of two ion species be larger than that in the case of equal-size grains.  相似文献

The problem of screening of the charge acquired by a dust grain in a two-temperature plasma is considered. The influence of the trapped ions on the screening effect and on the frictional force exerted on a dust grain by an ion flow is investigated. It is shown that the ions trapped by a grain radically reduce the frictional force in the ion flow because their distribution is determined by the temperature of the cold buffer gas. The mechanism for the onset of the reactive force that accelerates the grain in the direction opposite to that of the flow is explained. It is based on the momentum transfer from the flow of the ions that are additionally accelerated in the grain field to the atoms of the buffer gas. As a result, the momentum carried by the charge-exchange atoms out of the “ions + grain” system exceeds the momentum they have carried into the system; this gives rise to a reactive force directed opposite to the ion flow (the negative frictional force). The magnitude of the reactive force is estimated.  相似文献

The influence of the neutral component of the dusty ionospheric plasma on the process of dust grain charging is analyzed. Microscopic ion fluxes onto a dust grain are calculated with allowance for the interaction with the neutral components of the ionospheric plasma for both negatively and positively charged dust grains. For the latter case, which takes place in the presence of intense UV or X-ray solar radiation, the electron heating caused by the photoelectric effect is also investigated. It is found that the efficiency of electron heating depends on the density of neutral particles. The altitudes at which these effects appreciably influence the charging of different types of nano- and microscale dust grains are determined. It is shown that these effects should be taken into account in describing noctilucent clouds, polar mesosphere summer echoes, and physical phenomena involving grains of meteoric origin.  相似文献

The properties of magnetosonic waves that propagate perpendicularly to the external magnetic field in a polydisperse dusty plasma and the frequencies of which are about the dust cyclotron frequency are analyzed. A dispersion relation containing integrals of functions of the dust grain radius is derived and investigated as a function of the parameters characterizing the polydisperse properties of dust. It is found that, in a polydisperse dusty plasma, the low-frequency magnetosonic mode splits into two branches. The first, lower frequency branch has a cutoff, while the higher frequency branch has a resonance. Between the two branches, there is a forbidden frequency range within which electromagnetic waves cannot propagate perpendicular to the magnetic field. The width of the forbidden frequency range is determined as a function of the slope of the distribution function of dust grains over radii and the interval within which the dust grain radii lie.  相似文献

The first numerical study is presented of the self-consistent potential of a dust grain in a nitrogen plasma with a condensed disperse phase at room and cryogenic temperatures and at high gas pressures for which the electron and ion transport in the plasma can be described in the hydrodynamic approximation. It is shown that the potential of the dust grain is described with good accuracy by the Debye potential, in which case, however, the screening radius turns out to be larger than the electron Debye radius. The difference between the radii is especially large in a plasma with high ionization rates (about 1016–1018 cm?3 s?1) at room temperature. It is found that, in a certain range of the parameters of a nitrogen dusty plasma, the parameter describing the interaction between the grains exceeds the critical value above which one would expect the formation of plasma-dust structures such as Coulomb crystals. For a plasma at cryogenic temperature (T=77 K), this range is significantly wider.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of coagulation of dust grains of different sizes injected into a low-temperature plasma of an RF discharge in argon. A theoretical model describing the formation of dust clusters in a low-temperature plasma is developed and applied to interpret the results of experiments on the coagulation of dust grains having large negative charges. The grain size at which coagulation under the given plasma conditions is possible is estimated using the developed theory. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data.  相似文献

Charged particle transport and kinetic processes in a low-temperature dusty plasma are numerically simulated. Dust grains are represented as spheres with a given radius. The self-consistent electric field in the plasma surrounding a charged dust grain is calculated taking into account the perturbations of plasma quasineutrality near the grains. It is shown that applying an external electric field leads to a rearrangement of the plasma space charge and a break of the spherical symmetry of the electron and ion density distributions around the grain. The mutual influence of two identical charged dust grains is considered, and the energy of the electrostatic interaction between the grains is calculated. It is shown that this energy has a minimum at a certain finite distance between the grains.  相似文献

Examples of solutions to transcendental equations that arise in mathematical problems of plasma physics are considered. Earlier, such equations were solved only by approximate methods. The use of a new function—the Lambert W function—has made it possible to obtain explicit exact solutions that can help to refine the existing relevant theories. As examples, the following problems from different branches of plasma physics are considered: the equilibrium charge of a dust grain in a plasma, the structure of the Bohm sheath, the diameter of the separatrix in a Galathea-Belt system, the transverse structure of an electron beam in a plasma, the energy loss rate of a test charged particle in a plasma, and the structure of the Sagdeev pseudopotential for ion acoustic waves.  相似文献

In this paper the effect of the microstructure of remote plasma‐deposited amorphous silicon films on the grain size development in polycrystalline silicon upon solid‐phase crystallization is reported. The hydrogenated amorphous silicon films are deposited at different microstructure parameter values R* (which represents the distribution of SiHx bonds in amorphous silicon), at constant hydrogen content. Amorphous silicon films undergo a phase transformation during solid‐phase crystallization and the process results in fully (poly‐)crystallized films. An increase in amorphous film structural disorder (i.e., an increase in R*), leads to the development of larger grain sizes (in the range of 700–1100 nm). When the microstructure parameter is reduced, the grain size ranges between 100 and 450 nm. These results point to the microstructure parameter having a key role in controlling the grain size of the polycrystalline silicon films and thus the performance of polycrystalline silicon solar cells.  相似文献
