The Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella, is infected with A-group Wolbachia (wKue), and the almond moth, Cadra cautella, is doubly infected with A- and B-group Wolbachia, which are designated as wCauA and wCauB, respectively. In both insects, the Wolbachia populations increased greatly during embryonic and larval stages. The Wolbachia population doubled every 3.6 days on average in E. kuehniella larvae, whereas those of wCauA and wCauB doubled every 2.1 days in C. cautella larvae. The populations of wCauA and wCauB that had been transferred into the E. kuehniella background increased at similar rates to that of wKue in the natural host E. kuehniella, suggesting that the host genetic background influences Wolbachia proliferation. To examine whether the populations of the two Wolbachia variants in double infection is regulated collectively or independently, we measured the infection load in the ovaries of three transfected E. kuehniella lines in different infection states: single infection with wCauA, single infection with wCauB, and double infection. The density of each Wolbachia variant did not differ significantly between the singly and doubly transfected hosts, suggesting independent regulation.  相似文献

Wolbachia, a causative agent of various reproductive changes in arthropods, induces cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) in the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella. Two strains of E. kuehniella, Yokohama and Tsuchiura, harbor closely related Wolbachia, but the Yokohama strain expresses stronger CI than the Tsuchiura strain. A transinfected E. kuehniella strain that harbors the Wolbachia derived from the almond moth Cadra cautella, expresses weak CI at a similar level to the Tsuchiura strain. In the present study, we measured the Wolbachia density in the testis of the three E. kuehniella strains in order to examine the effects of bacterial strain and infection load on the expression of CI. When individuals of the same strain were compared, a correlation of bacterial density to CI level was observed. In addition, the Wolbachia density was higher in the Yokohama strain than the Tsuchiura strain in agreement with the CI levels expressed. However, this relationship did not hold in the comparison between the naturally infected and transinfected strains that carried phylogenetically distant Wolbachia.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The incidence of diapause in Ephestia kuehniella Zeller from an unhealed granary in Scotland was influenced by both photoperiod and temperature. At 25°C, nearly 50% of larvae entered diapause when reared in continuous darkness (DD) and up to 30% did so in short photoperiods. Little diapause was detected around LD 14:10 but a second, smaller peak of about 20% occurred at LD 16:8 and LD 18:6, falling away again to nearly zero in continuous light. More larvae entered diapause when reared continuously at 15 or 20°C than at 25 and 30°C. However, when larvae reared from hatch at 25°C in LD 16:8 were transferred after 1 week to 15°C in LD 9:15, almost twice as many entered diapause as did those reared at 15°C throughout. The sensitive phase for diapause induction occurred near the start of the final instar. The mean duration of diapause was between 2 and 3 months in most photoperiods at 20 and 25°C, and was shorter at 15°C. However, in DD at 25°C, it lasted about 7 months. Termination of diapause was hastened in larvae reared at 25°C in DD by transferring them to LD 14:10, and also by chilling them at 7.5°C for 6 weeks before returning to 25°C in DD. In an unhealed store in southern England, viable adults emerged from May to July and originated from larvae which terminated diapause relatively late. It would appear from the results of transferring larvae back to the laboratory at various times during the winter that some phases of diapause development were completed quite early after exposure to low temperatures, although no further development took place in the store until temperatures rose again in April.  相似文献

Survival analyses, investigations of extinction and persistence, are executed for populations represented by a nonautonomous differential equation model. The population is assumed governed by density dependent and time varying density independent demographic parameters. While traditional approaches to extinction postulate extinction on an infinite time horizon and at zero abundance level, survival analysis is developed not only for this traditional setting but also on a finite time horizon and at a nonzero threshold level. A main conclusion is that extinction of a temporally stressed population is determined by a totality of density independent and density dependent factors.  相似文献

Crowding effects of larvae on survival and development were examined for the broad-horned flour beetle, Gnathocerus cornutus (F.). The larvae matured about 3 weeks after hatching regardless of their densities, but pupation was severely hindered by crowding. There existed an upper limit for the number of the pupae produced and its mechanism was studied by a statistical analysis of the distribution patterns of pupal cells and the experiment in which glass tubes were artificially supplied in addition as pupation site. These studies show that G. cornutus larvae have a habit to construct cells for pupation and this habit leads to a contest competition for pupation site at high densities. The significance of the contest competition for population regulation was discussed comparing the results on Tribolium confusumJacqueline duVal .  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A positive relationship is shown between the frequency of successful completions of courtship and the extent of development of the 'calling' posture of E. cautella females. Further relationships are shown between the frequency of successful completions of courtship and the positions in which calling females hold their antennae. During late photophase, calling females which hold their antennae forward are less likely to mate than are similarly calling females which hold their antennae back over the wings, whereas in early scotophase this relationship is reversed, and calling females which hold their antennae forward are more likely to mate than are similarly calling females which hold their antennae back. These observations are discussed in relation to the diel rhythm of the species, disturbance, and female receptivity to male courtship.  相似文献

Several studies have indicated that mating disruption (MD) successfully reduces population densities of stored product moths, for example, the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). However, practical issues, such as finding control plots, replication, and lack of similarity between replicates, often incur problems in full-scale investigations and often draw focus from the added results. We here present results from long-term monitoring of E. kuehniella populations in two similar flourmills in Poland, one treated with pheromone for MD and one left untreated and used as control. Pheromone-mediated MD was applied during 2 years. Thirty pheromone dispensers (one per 100 m3 factory volume), each releasing about 2 mg ( Z,E )-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate per day, were used. Pheromone-baited traps were used to monitor the moth populations in the MD mill and in a nearby untreated mill. The reduction in trap catch during the MD treatment was about 90% or more, compared with the untreated mill or pre-treatment periods of the MD mill. The reduction was larger during the 2nd year of MD than during the 1st year. These results contribute to the picture that MD is an effective method to control moth species infesting stored products.  相似文献

A photoperiodically-controlled diapause of the long-day, short-day type was identified in a brown-winged, yellow-eyed strain of Ephestia cautella (Walker). The proportion of larvae diapausing in very long photoperiods was less than in short photoperiods. The mean critical photoperiod, here defined as that photoperiod giving half the maximum percentage of insects that diapause in response to photoperiod at a given temperature, was between 12 and 13 hr for the long-day reaction at both 20 and 25°C. The principal sensitive phase occurred near the time of the last larval moult. The mean duration of diapause was 2–3 months at 20°C and slightly longer at 25°C. The optimum temperature for diapause development was near 15°C, all larvae pupating within 24 days after a 45-day exposure at this temperature. Diapause could be terminated whenever larvae diapausing at 20°C were exposed to as few as five long (15 hr) photoperiods at 25°C. Long photoperiods at 20°C, or short photoperiods (9 hr) at 25°C were less effective in terminating diapause.  相似文献

Tolerance to Bacillus thuringiensis crystal endotoxins (Bt-toxins) is correlated with an elevated immune status in larvae of the flour moth Ephestia kuehniella. To gain more specific information about the effector pathways involved in the protection against the toxin, we studied the effects of Bt-toxin formulations in susceptible (non-induced) and tolerant (immune-induced) larvae after natural (parasitism-mediated) and chemical (tropolone-mediated) suppression of defence reactions. Although melanization in hemolymph was significantly reduced, there was no significant effect on susceptibility to the toxin in parasitised or tropolone-treated larvae. This suggests that melanization of hemolymph is correlated with an elevated immune status but not responsible for the observed tolerance to Bt-toxin. To examine whether hemolymph proteins exist in the gut lumen and function as pro-coagulants, we compared gut and plasma proteins of immune-induced with those of non-induced larvae. Here we show that the lipid carrier lipophorin represents a major component in the gut lumen and interacts with mature Bt-toxin to form a complex.  相似文献

A nuclear matrix fraction was prepared from ovaries of the achiasmatic flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella, by removal of the chromatin, using detergent treatment of homogenized ovaries or dissected ovary tips followed by DNase digestion and high salt extraction. Removal of DNA and histones from the nuclei was demonstrated by Feulgen staining and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), respectively. By light microscopy, ribbon-like structures similar in dimension to the synaptonemal complex were observed in the oocyte after digestion of the chromosomes. Electron microscopic examination of matrix preparations of pachytene cells showed a defined synaptonemal complex structure with both lateral and central elements. Such structures were not found in either the fully differentiated nurse cells or in follicle cells which were exposed to the same preparative technique concurrently. However, in early post-pachytene nurse cells the typical polycomplex structures, formed in these cells from the synaptonemal complex, were found in nuclear matrix preparations. The results suggest an association of synaptonemal complexes with the nuclear matrix.  相似文献

A field population of Evetria cristata was studied in 10 plots in 1962 and in 6 plots in 1963. These plots were divided into 2 or 3 groups of different population levels of the shoot moth in respective years. The survival of the insect was then analysed in these different groups of plots. The survival rate of E. cristata from eggs to adults in the first generation was found always higher in the group with low population density, which indicates the existence of some factors that affect the population more severely when the insect is more abundant. Lissonota evetriae and Pediobius sp. seemed to have killed more proportion of the hosts where the shoot moth density was high. However, the total effect of the all natural enemies was not always great in the plots with high density of the moth. The survival of the second generation of the moth in 1963 was observed to be much higher at any population level than in the other generations.  相似文献

Though there are many problems on the usefulness of the logistic curve, it may be necessary to examine before discussing these problems whether or not the actual data fit to the theoretical values. It has been clarified in this paper that the relation between the population density and its rate of increase per individual described by the differential equation (1) is represented by a straight line on a finite difference diagram on which Ni+1−Ni/Ni values are plotted against Ni+1. Utilizing this linear relation we may examine the fittness of the logistic curve to the actual data and when it is fitted we may estimate the parameters of the logistic equation by (5) and (6). The result of the application of this method to the experimental populations of azuki bean weevil indicates that the relation between parent and progeny densities fits well to the logistic type as has been proved byFujita andUtida (1953) who utilized the linear reltion between 1/R+2σ and parent density where R is the apparent rate of reproduction and σ is a constant dependent primarily upon the length of adult life (0≦σ≦1).  相似文献

With resistance of insect pests to synthetic pesticides on the increase, the role of parasitoid wasps as biological control agents is expanding in pest and resistance management strategies. One of the predictors of reproductive success of endoparasitoids is the relative size of the wasp at host emergence. While in idiobiont parasitoids, where the host stops feeding after parasitism, the wasp size is determined by the host size at the time of parasitism; the size of koinobiont wasps, where the host continues to feed after parasitism, is dependent on additional factors. Here we show that the host mass and temperature are important factors that determine survival and development of the koinobiont endoparasitoid Venturia canescens in late instar larvae of the flour moth Ephestia kuehniella.  相似文献
