BACKGROUND: Discrimination between edible and contaminated foods is crucial for the survival of animals. In Drosophila, a family of gustatory receptors (GRs) expressed in taste neurons is thought to mediate the recognition of sugars and bitter compounds, thereby controlling feeding behavior. RESULTS: We have characterized in detail the expression of eight Gr genes in the labial palps, the fly's main taste organ. These genes fall into two distinct groups: seven of them, including Gr66a, are expressed in 22 or fewer taste neurons in each labial palp. Additional experiments show that many of these genes are coexpressed in partially overlapping sets of neurons. In contrast, Gr5a, which encodes a receptor for trehalose, is expressed in a distinct and larger set of taste neurons associated with most chemosensory sensilla, including taste pegs. Mapping the axonal targets of cells expressing Gr66a and Gr5a reveals distinct projection patterns for these two groups of neurons in the brain. Moreover, tetanus toxin-mediated inactivation of Gr66a- or Gr5a-expressing cells shows that these two sets of neurons mediate distinct taste modalities-the perception of bitter (caffeine) and sweet (trehalose) taste, respectively. CONCLUSION: Discrimination between two taste modalities-sweet and bitter-requires specific sets of gustatory receptor neurons that express different Gr genes. Unlike the Drosophila olfactory system, where each neuron expresses a single olfactory receptor gene, taste neurons can express multiple receptors and do so in a complex Gr gene code that is unique for small sets of neurons.  相似文献

Taste is crucial for honeybees for choosing profitable food sources, resins, water sources, and for nestmate recognition. Peripheral taste detection occurs within cuticular hairs, the chaetic and basiconic sensilla, which host gustatory receptor cells and, usually a mechanoreceptor cell. Gustatory sensilla are mostly located on the distal segment of the antennae, on the mouthparts, and on the tarsi of the forelegs. These sensilla respond with varying sensitivity to sugars, salts, and possibly amino acids, proteins, and water. So far, no responses of receptor cells to bitter substances were found although inhibitory effects of these substances on sucrose receptor cells could be recorded. When bees are free to express avoidance behaviors, they reject highly concentrated bitter and saline solutions. However, such avoidance disappears when bees are immobilized in the laboratory. In this case, they ingest these solutions, even if they suffer afterward a malaise-like state or even die from such ingestion. Central processing of taste occurs mainly in the subesophageal ganglion, but the nature of this processing remains unknown. We suggest that coding tastants in terms of their hedonic value, thus classifying them in terms of their palatability, is a basic strategy that a central processing of taste should achieve for survival.  相似文献

The olfactory systems of insects and mammals have analogous anatomical features and use similar molecular logic for olfactory coding. The molecular underpinnings of the chemosensory systems that detect taste and pheromone cues have only recently been characterized. Recent advances in taste physiology provide evidence against the traditional “western” notion that there are only four basic tastes. Each substance elicits a singular “signature” on the peripheral taste nerve, but in some cases the signals form separate clusters within the continuum of taste perceptions. We will discuss the taste abilities of nonhuman primates in terms of threshold and above-threshold responses to potential foods. As diets have evolved in species' environments, tastes have responded adaptively in order to maximize energy intake. In turn, food plants have evolved nutrients and toxins in relation to the tasting abilities of consumers. These compounds can be beneficial or harmful in various environments and at different concentrations. This cost-benefit ratio concerns all primates, including Homo sapiens populations living at subsistence level, and must be taken into account, together with psychosensory and sociocultural factors, to understand food choices.  相似文献

A total of 98 MZ and 67 like sexed DZ adult twin pairs were studied for taste sensitivity to P.T.C. The MZ pairs were also tested for their food favoritism. A P.T.C. screening test showed a concordance in "tasting" or "non-tasting", within the MZ versus the DZ pairs. For the comparison of food choices of the P.T.C. tasters and non-tasters (members of MZ pairs) a quantity called "Tastership Test Point" (TTP) was constructed. Based on an analysis of the TTP values it may be suggested that taste sensitivity to P.T.C. and food preferences are not completely unrelated characters. These results serve as a contribution to the authors' previous findings obtained in Hungarian adolescents.  相似文献

Energy homeostasis plays a significant role in food consumption and body weight regulation with fat intake being an area of particular interest due to its palatability and high energy density. Increasing evidence from humans and animal studies indicate the existence of a taste modality responsive to fat via its breakdown product fatty acids. These studies implicate multiple candidate receptors and ion channels for fatty acid taste detection, indicating a complex peripheral physiology that is currently not well understood. Additionally, a limited number of studies suggest a reduced ability to detect fatty acids is associated with obesity and a diet high in fat reduces an individual's ability to detect fatty acids. To support this, genetic variants within candidate fatty acid receptors are also associated with obesity reduced ability to detect fatty acids. Understanding oral peripheral fatty acid transduction mechanisms and the association with fat consumption may provide the basis of novel approaches to control development of obesity.  相似文献

基于2014年贫困户实地调查数据,运用集对分析和障碍度模型对宁夏海原县农户生计脆弱性及其胁迫因子进行实证分析.结果表明: 海原县农户生计脆弱性总体较高且呈现地貌和民族差异化,平原区、河谷川地山间洼地农户生计脆弱性低于土石山区、黄土梁区和中山地貌区;回汉混居村农户生计脆弱性高于纯回族与纯汉族村.农户自身必要资产的缺乏和外部地理环境敏感性的胁迫是海原县农户生计脆弱的深层原因.生计结构不合理与生计方式单一导致生计脆弱性长期积累;地理环境的不易改变使扶贫资源的地区可进入性降低.农户生计应对能力的提高需建立明确的村级水权分配制度,实施教育贫困户对口帮扶,加大生计方式多元化转型的成本投入,开发村域连锁综合商品市场.农户生计脆弱性的治理应把“公路村村通”建设放在“村村通工程”更突出的位置,坚持气象防灾和保险企业减灾相结合,开发农业生产保险系统.  相似文献

Majority of research on attractiveness is restricted to faces of European origin. The perception of attractiveness may, however, vary across communities due to variations in both facial morphology and local standards of beauty. We investigated the relative contribution of four facial markers of attractiveness based on 101 female facial portraits (standardized, non-manipulated) from Cameroon and Namibia, which were assessed by local male raters and by raters from a distant European population, the Czech Republic. Images from Cameroon include only women of Bantu origin, while Namibians are represented by women of both Bantu (Owambo/Herero) and Nama origin. While controlling for age and BMI, we explored the relationship between female attractiveness and a set of facial traits: fluctuating asymmetry, averageness, shape sexual dimorphism, and skin color (rated and measured in CIELab color space).In the Cameroonian sample, local male raters favored lighter-skinned female faces with morphology closer to average. The attractiveness of Nama women as rated by Nama men positively correlated with lighter complexion, but this did not extend to rating by Cameroonian men. The attractiveness of Namibian Owambo/Herero women was positively associated with facial femininity and lighter complexion when judged by both Cameroonian and Nama male raters. In all samples, the attractiveness as rated by Czech men was predicted by age and BMI, but not by skin color. We found no significant association between attractiveness and fluctuating asymmetry in any of the tested samples. When controlling for age, the effect of skin color on attractiveness turned to be non-significant in the Owambo/Herrero and Nama sample, but remained significant in the Cameroonian sample. Variations in skin color thus represent an important factor of African female attractiveness within the African context, but they do not seem to affect judgements made by European raters. Sensitivity to some facial markers of female attractiveness thus seems to be restricted to regional populations and/or constrained by shared ethnicity.  相似文献

A number of essential processes in the development of Myzus persicae are initiated in early larval life. During this period the food quality often affects further development. This paper deals with the question whether amino acids, known to be necessary for developmental processes, play a specific rôle in diet acceptance. The amino acid methionine appeared to stimulate food uptake to a great extent. Experiments with diets containing 32P showed that food uptake within 1 hr by first-instar larvae on diets of unequal nutritive value was markedly different.
Résumé La qualité de la nourriture que reçoit Myzus persicae pendant le début de sa vie larvaire détermine souvent les modalités de son développement ultérieur (production de formes aptères où ailées par exemple). On a charché à déterminer si les acides aminés, reconnus comme étant nécessaires au développement, jouent seulement un rôle spécifique dans le métabolisme des Aphides ou si ils interviennent comme facteurs stimulant la prise de nourriture. La méthionine en particulier se révèle avoir un rôle important comme phago-stimulant; en l'absence de méthionine la quantité de nourriture absorbée est diminuée. Par contre sur des aliments dépourvus d'histidine et d'isoleucine, le taux de nourriture absorbée ne change pas.Des expériences de choix alimentaire, entre deux substrats placés côte à côte, ou disposés en couches superposées, montrent que dans le ler cas les Aphides peuvent se localiser sur le milieu le mieux équilibré en ces acides aminés, et dans le second cas peuvent enfoncer leurs stylets jusqu'au milieu le plus favorable. L'adjonction de 32P à l'un des milieux permet d'apprécier la quantité de nourriture prélevée.

The effects of a 10-day low-calorie diet (LCD; n = 8) or exercise training (ET; n = 8) on insulin secretion and action were compared in obese men (n = 9) and women (n = 7), aged 53 +/- 1 yr, with abnormal glucose tolerance by using a hyperglycemic clamp with superimposed arginine infusion and a high-fat drink. Body mass (LCD, 115 +/- 5 vs. 110 +/- 5 kg; ET, 111 +/- 7 vs. 109 +/- 7 kg; P < 0. 01) and fasting plasma glucose (LCD, 115 +/- 10 vs. 99 +/- 4 mg/dl; ET, 112 +/- 4 vs. 101 +/- 5 mg/dl, P < 0.01) and insulin (LCD, 23.9 +/- 5.6 vs. 15.2 +/- 3.9 microU/ml; ET, 17.6 +/- 1.9 vs. 13.9 +/- 2. 4 microU/ml; P < 0.05) decreased in both groups. There was a 40% reduction in plasma insulin during hyperglycemia (0-45 min) after LCD (peak: 118 +/- 18 vs. 71 +/- 14 microU/ml; P < 0.05) and ET (69 +/- 14 vs. 41 +/- 7 microU/ml; P < 0.05) and trends for reductions during arginine infusion and a high-fat drink. The 56% increase in glucose uptake after ET (4.95 +/- 0.90 vs. 7.74 +/- 0.82 mg. min-1. kg fat-free mass-1; P < 0.01) was significantly (P < 0.01) greater than the 19% increase (5.72 +/- 1.12 vs. 6.80 +/- 0.94 mg. min-1. kg fat-free mass-1; P = not significant) that occurred after LCD. The marked increase in glucose disposal after ET, despite lower insulin levels, suggests that short-term exercise is more effective than diet in enhancing insulin action in individuals with abnormal glucose tolerance.  相似文献

Biomarkers indicate changes associated with disease. Blood is relatively stable due to the homeostatic mechanisms of the body;however, urine accumulates metabolites from changes in the body, making it a better source for early biomarker discovery. The Li ethnic group is a unique minority ethnic group that has only lived on Hainan Island for approximately 5,000 years. Studies have shown that various specific genetic variations are different between the Li and Han ethnic groups. However, whether the urinary proteome between these two ethnic groups is significantly different remains unknown. In this study, differential urinary proteins were identified in the Li and Han ethnic groups using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS).In total, 1,555 urinary proteins were identified. Twenty-five of the urinary proteins were statistically significantly different, 16 of which have been previously reported to be biomarkers of many diseases, and that these significantly different proteins were caused by ethnic differences rather than random differences. Ethnic group differences may be an influencing factor in urine proteome studies and should be considered when human urine samples are used for biomarker discovery.  相似文献

Taste thresholds and consumption responses to above-threshold concentrations of fructose solutions were determined in eight callitrichid primate species using the "two-bottle preference test". Although taste thresholds are relatively similar across species, above-threshold responses may differ considerably between marmosets and tamarins. As fructose concentration increases, the rate of consumption increases less for most marmoset species (Cebuella and Callithrix spp.) than for Goeldi's monkey (Callimico) and tamarins (Saguinus and Leontopithecus spp.). It is proposed that distinct shapes of the curves illustrating these responses characterize species in terms of global taste system adaptations to different diets.  相似文献

Copy number variants contribute extensively to inter-individual genomic differences, but little is known about their inter-population variability and diversity. In a previous study (Bosch et al., 2007; 16:2572-2582), we reported that the primate-specific gene family FAM90A, which accounts for as many as 25 members in the human reference assembly, has expanded the number of FAM90A clusters across the hominoid lineage. Here we examined the copy number variability of FAM90A genes in 260 HapMap samples of European, African, and Asian ancestry, and showed significant inter-population differences (p<0.0001). Based on the recent study of Stranger et al. (2007; 315:848-853), we also explored the correlation between copy number variability and expression levels of the FAM90A gene family. Despite the high genomic variability, we found a low correlation between FAM90A copy number and expression levels, which could be due to the action of independent trans-acting factors. Our results show that FAM90A is highly variable in copy number between individuals and between populations. However, this variability has little impact on gene expression levels, thus highlighting the importance of genomic variability for genes located in regions containing segmental duplications.  相似文献

Understanding the micro-coevolution of the human gut microbiome with host genetics is challenging but essential in both evolutionary and medical studies. To gain insight into the interactions between host genetic variation and the gut microbiome, we analyzed both the human genome and gut microbiome collected from a cohort of 190 students in the same boarding college and representing 3 ethnic groups, Uyghur, Kazakh, and Han Chinese. We found that differences in gut microbiome were greater between genetically distinct ethnic groups than those genetically closely related ones in taxonomic composition, functional composition, enterotype stratification, and microbiome genetic differentiation. We also observed considerable correlations between host genetic variants and the abundance of a subset of gut microbial species. Notably, interactions between gut microbiome species and host genetic variants might have coordinated effects on specific human phenotypes. Bacteroides ovatus, previously reported to modulate intestinal immunity, is significantly correlated with the host genetic variant rs12899811 (meta-P = 5.55 × 10−5), which regulates the VPS33B expression in the colon, acting as a tumor suppressor of colorectal cancer. These results advance our understanding of the micro-coevolution of the human gut microbiome and their interactive effects with host genetic variation on phenotypic diversity.  相似文献

Hemispheric specialisation for speech in humans has been well documented. The lateralisation for song production observed in songbirds is reminiscent of this hemispheric dominance. In order to investigate whether song perception is also lateralised, we made multiunit recordings of the neuronal activity in the field L of starlings during the presentation of species-specific and artificial non-specific sounds. We observed a systematic stronger activation in one hemisphere than in the other one during the playback of species-specific sounds, with inter-subject variability in the predominant hemisphere for song perception. Such an asymmetry was not observed for artificial non-specific sounds. Thus, our results suggest that, at least at the individual level, the two hemispheres of the starlings' brain perceive and process conspecific signals differently.  相似文献

It has been shown that the polymorphisms of Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene are associated with susceptibility to several disorders including hyperhomocysteinemia, vascular disease, birth defect, and certain cancers, and exhibit great diversities among various populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of two common non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (i.e., C677T and A1298C) at MTHFR gene in 13 Chinese populations. A total of 1015 healthy individuals from 13 populations distributed widely from north to south in China were studied. DNA samples were isolated from peripheral blood samples and genotyped using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. For C677T polymorphism, the frequency in Chinese of CC homozygous was 42.4%; CT heterozygous was 49.8%; and TT homozygous was 7.9%. For A1298C, AA homozygous was 39.2%; AC heterozygous was 38.6%; and CC homozygous was 22.2%. The allelic frequency of 677T and 1298C was 32.8 and 41.5%, respectively, and each allele frequency had significant variance in 13 Chinese populations. The frequency of the 677T allele among southern populations was 30.7% compared to 38.0% among northeastern and 30.5% among northwestern populations. The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). The frequency of 1298C mutation in southerns was 58.9% whereas in northeasterns it was 24.0% and 37.6% in northwesterns. This was also statistically significant (p < 0.01). The MTHFR C677T and A1298C sites were in linkage disequilibrium in the Chinese population revealed by our data.  相似文献

We have analyzed eight human-specific Alu insertion polymorphisms in four Chinese populations belonging to three ethnic groups (98 Hans from Shanghai, 80 Hans from Guangzhou, 85 Uyghurs, and 60 Sibos). All populations exhibited high levels of average heterozygosity, and those in Uyghur and Sibo were higher than predicted by the island model of population structure. The degree of genetic differentiation among these populations is statistically significant, and lower than those observed in most parts of the world except for Europe and Sahul (Australia and New Guinea). Phylogenetic analysis of these data with published data from 29 worldwide populations shows that there is a close genetic affinity among all the East Asian populations except for the Uyghur, and that the Uyghur population was found to lie between the East Asian and the West Asian populations on the population tree. The greater heterozygosity and the significant genotype associations between unlinked loci observed for the Uyghurs support the scenario that the Uyghurs might have originated from an admixture between Europeans and East Asians. This study also provides further support for the "out-of-Africa" hypothesis of modern human evolution in East Asia.  相似文献
