We investigated the fire resistance conferred by bark of seven common tree species in north Australian tropical savannas. We estimated bark thermal conductance and examined the relative importance of bark thickness, density and moisture content for protecting the cambium from lethal fire temperatures. Eucalypt and non-eucalypt species were contrasted, including the fire-sensitive conifer Callitris intratropica. Cambial temperature responses to bark surface heating were measured using a modified wick-fire technique, which simulated a heat pulse comparable to surface fires of moderate intensity. Bark thickness was a better predictor of resistance to cambial injury from fires than either bark moisture or density, accounting for 68% of the deviance in maximum temperature of the cambium. The duration of heating required to kill the cambium of a tree (τc) was directly proportional to bark thickness squared. Although species did not differ significantly in their bark thermal conductance (k), the thinner barked eucalypts nevertheless achieved similar or only slightly lower levels of fire resistance than much thicker barked non-eucalypts. Bark thickness alone cannot account for the latter and we suggest that lower bark moisture content among the eucalypts also contributes to their apparent fire resistance. Unique eucalypt meristem anatomy and epicormic structures, combined with their bark traits, probably facilitate resprouting after fire and ensure the dominance of eucalypts in fire-prone savannas. This study emphasises the need to take into account both the thermal properties of bark and the mechanism of bud protection in characterising the resprouting ability of savanna trees.  相似文献

Eucalyptus L'Héritier (Myrtaceae: Leptospermoideae) species are native to the Austro-Malaysian region, but have been widely planted in temperate and subtropical regions around the world. In most regions whereEucalyptus have been imported, the Eucalyptus Longhorned Borer (Phoracantha semipunctata F.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) has been accidently introduced. Larvae of the beetle bore through the bark and mine along the cambium of stressed trees, usually killing their host. We report here the relative susceptibilities of 12Eucalyptus species in two mixed-species plantations in California, USA. These trees were stressed by water deficit resulting from a prolonged drought.Eucalyptus species that appeared resistant to the borer includedE. camaldulensis Dehnhardt,E. cladocalyx F. Muller,e. sideroxylon A. Cunn. ex Woolls, andE. trabutii (anE. camaldulensis hybrid). Species that were more susceptible to attack wereE. diversicolor F. Mueller,E. globulus LaBillardière,E. grandis Hill ex Maiden,E. nitens (Deane & Maiden),E. saligna Sm., andE. viminalis LaBillardière. Survival of trees was influenced by fine-scale moisture variation resulting from slope and irrigation effects. Resistance characteristics of theseEucalyptus species did not correlate with taxonomic relatedness or bark characteristics, but did correspond to drought tolerance traits in their native habitat.Eucalyptus species that were resistant to attack byP. semipunctata were those that are most tolerant of drought in Australia.  相似文献

The inner bark of Japanese cedar,Cryptomeria japonica D. Don., is the main food of the sugi bark borer,Semanotus japonicus Lacordaire, but may also be involved in resistance to attack by the borer. I used newly hatched larvae to inoculate cedar logs that had been cut 2-weeks to 12-months earlier, and undamaged living cedar trees. On living trees, all larvae were killed by resin flow from the traumatic resin canals between the outer- and inner bark or between the inner bark and cambium. In logs that were cut more than 4 months prior to inoculation, larvae were unable to complete development. In logs cut 2 weeks prior to inoculation, almost all larvae were able to reach the adult stage but they were smaller in size than adults from living trees damaged by this borer. These results suggest that poor nutrient conditions in the inner bark of logs affected development and survival of the borer. Because of its nutritional advantage, living cedars provide a better environment for the sugi bark borer. However, all larvae are killed by resin flow, suggesting that this insect is “in between” being primary and secondary with respect to living trees, or a “weak” primary insect. The sugi bark borer seems to develop early in the season so that early instar larvae encounter reduced amounts of resin flow and so that late-instar larvae feed mostly in summer when nutrient levels in the inner bark are at their highest.  相似文献

Large body size confers a reproductive advantage to adults of the wood‐boring beetle Phoracantha semipunctata (F.) (Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae: Phoracanthini). Larvae of this species feed subcortically in stressed and dying eucalypt trees and logs. We evaluated the influence of the larval environment on larval performance and adult body size by manipulating the post‐felling age of host logs (from freshly cut to 2‐weeks‐old) and the density of colonizing neonates (low density with minimal competition for resources vs. high density with intense competition). Adult beetles emerged in greater numbers from logs that had been subjected to the aging treatment which reduced bark moisture content and favored colonization by neonates. Survival was greatest in larger logs having lower densities of neonates, but was greatly diminished in all treatments by mortality during pupation. Development time varied from 2 months to more than a year and was shortest in smaller logs having high densities of larvae. The size of adult beetles emerging from a log was not influenced by larval density, but was positively correlated with the age of logs when the neonates colonized, and log size. These findings suggest that the optimal developmental conditions for P. semipunctata larvae, in terms of larval performance and adult body size, are available in large, aged host logs having low densities of larvae. Manipulation of the larval environment in this study resulted in a considerable variation in adult body size, but large individuals were relatively more common in the wild population that was the source of neonates for the experiment. Potential body size may have been constrained by our use of only one host species and a narrow range of log dimensions.  相似文献

Chile has more than 330 000 ha of eucalypt plantations, predominantly in the eighth to the tenth region (approximately 34 to 41°S). Eucalyptus globulus ssp. globulus is the principal eucalypt planted, but Eucalyptus nitens, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus delegatensis and Eucalyptus viminalis are also grown. There are four main insect pests that have been detected attacking these eucalypts in Chile: the defoliator Gonipterus scutellatus, the bark borers Phoracantha semipunctata and Phoracantha recurva and the native wood borer Chilecomadia valdiviana. More recently, Thyrinteina arnobia and Ctenarytaina eucalypti have been detected. Gonipterus scutellatus and P. recurva have been discovered in Chile within the last 2 years and it is hoped they may still be eliminated using a combination of biological control and chemical control of local populations. Phoracantha recurva and P. semipunctata are not considered a problem because attack only occurs in areas of water deficit, away from current eucalypt plantations. Chilecomadia valdiviana can damage plantations of E. nitens but rarely attacks other eucalypts.?Chilecomadia valdiviana may cause future problems through further host shifts. Thyrinteina arnobia has only been detected during quarantine surveillance in the port of Valparaiso. Ctenarytaina eucalypti, recently detected in August 1999, had an initial limited distribution in the first region. However, since then, this insect has expanded its distribution south up to the tenth region. None of the insects recorded on eucalypts in Chile to date currently presents a threat to the eucalypt industry. It is also essential that additional resources are made available for their continued monitoring and control, particularly given that the 44% of plantations are held by small to medium property owners that would otherwise be unable to control a serious outbreak because of economic restrictions.  相似文献

Sudden increments of breeding material after windstorms, forest fires, or inappropriate management practices help bark beetles such as Ips sexdentatus Boerner (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) increase in numbers and colonize standing healthy pine trees. Preventing bark beetles from arriving to susceptible trees or logs may have great relevance for bark beetle management. Recent studies have reported inhibition of the aggregation response of I. sexdentatus using verbenone. Two field experiments were conducted to examine the effect of verbenone on the colonization pattern of this beetle. The first experiment tested the combined effect of trans‐conophthorin, a non‐host bark volatile with known repellent effect, and verbenone on Pinus sylvestris L. (Pinaceae) log piles of two sizes, but failed to protect them against I. sexdentatus attack when these two infochemicals were released at low rates. The results of this experiment suggested an interaction with the associated secondary bark beetle Orthotomicus erosus (Wollaston). A second experiment examined the response of I. sexdentatus and O. erosus to log piles that released verbenone at 0, 2, 10, or 40 mg day?1. Although I. sexdentatus colonization of Pinus nigra Arnold logs was completely prevented at 40 mg day?1, O. erosus could be found at all tested verbenone release rates. Besides verbenone, O. erosus colonization density and the height from which logs originated were the variables that best explained I. sexdentatus log colonization pattern. In addition, I. sexdentatus and O. erosus were rarely recorded colonizing the same log, and niche breadth analyses suggested that they excluded each other. The role of verbenone in the colonization process and its potential use in the prevention of population buildups of damaging bark beetles such as I. sexdentatus are discussed.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to develop a biological technology that would protect logs destined for oriented strand board (OSB) manufacturing from biodegradation. Aspen, red maple, and yellow birch trees were felled in one summer and the logs either debarked or not debarked, and either treated or not treated with a biological product of Gliocladium roseum. The logs were piled in different treatment groups and stored in a yard for 5 months and 1 year before evaluation. The results showed that all untreated logs, with or without bark, were seriously degraded by moulds, stain and decay fungi after a summer storage period of 5 months. The logs with bark were more degraded than the debarked logs, and the log ends were more degraded than the middle sections. After 5 months, 55–83% of the surface area of the wood discs was degraded in untreated logs. The biological treatment was effective, and only 4–16% of the surface area of the wood discs in treated logs was infected by various fungi. Strands cut from untreated logs consisted of 50–75% grey- or blue-stained strands, whereas those cut from biologically treated logs consisted of 10–25% such strands. Panels made using biologically treated logs had a lower thickness swelling and water absorption values compared to panels made using freshly cut logs and untreated stored logs. The other physical and mechanical properties of the various panels made in this test were comparable. In terms of mould resistance, all panels made from fungal-treated logs had a better mould resistance than those made from freshly cut and untreated logs.  相似文献

In the last two centuries, several species of Australian eucalypts (e.g. Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E.␣globulus) were introduced into the Iberian Peninsula for the production of paper pulp. The effects of the introduction of exotic root-symbitotic fungi together with the eucalypts have received little attention. During the past years, we have investigated the biology of ectomycorrhizal fungi in eucalypt plantations in the Iberian Peninsula. In the plantations studied, we found fruit bodies of several Australian ectomycorrhizal fungi and identified their ectomycorrhizas with DNA molecular markers. The most frequent species were Hydnangium carneum, Hymenogaster albus, Hysterangium inflatum, Labyrinthomyces donkii, Laccaria fraterna, Pisolithus albus, P. microcarpus, Rhulandiella berolinensis, Setchelliogaster rheophyllus, and Tricholoma eucalypticum. These fungi were likely brought from Australia together with the eucalypts, and they seem to have facilitated the establishment of eucalypt plantations and their naturalization. The dispersion of Australian fungal propagules may be facilitating the spread of eucalypts along watercourses in semiarid regions increasing the water lost. Because ectomycorrhizal fungi are obligate symbionts, their capacity to persist after eradication of eucalypt stands, and/or to extend beyond forest plantations, would rely on the possibility to find compatible native host trees, and to outcompete the native ectomycorrhizal fungi. Here we illustrate the case of the Australasian species Laccaria fraterna, which fruits in Mediterranean shrublands of ectomycorrhizal species of Cistus (rockroses). We need to know which other Australasian fungi extend to the native ecosystems, if we are to predict environmental␣risks associated with the introduction of Australasian ectomycorrhizal fungi into the Iberian Peninsula. Spatial patterns of soil water depletion by Eucalyptus spp. were surveyed to assess the potential of tree belts and short rotation phase farming with trees for groundwater recharge reduction and salinity control. Soils were sampled to depths of up to 10 m in transects perpendicular to 4- to 7-year-old mallee eucalypt belts (Eucalyptus horistes, E. kochii ssp. plenissima, E. loxophleba ssp. lissophloia, E. polybractea) and in a 4 year-old block of E. astringens. Results indicate that the eucalypt species can exploit soil water to depths of at least 8–10 m within 7 years of planting. The root systems of these eucalypts were able to penetrate clayey subsoils with bulk densities of up to 2.0 g cm−3. Leaf area indexes of tree belts were 2–10 times greater than those predicted for natural vegetation, probably as a result of exploiting a greater amount of soil water stored under the agricultural system. The lateral influence of mallee belts, as indicated by soil water contents that were depleted to wilting point, ranged from 15–42 m. The resulting dry soil zone provided an effective barrier to groundwater recharge by incident rainfall thereby lessening the risk of salinisation in the agricultural landscape. The width of this barrier to recharge was predicted to range from 7 m to 54 m based on leaf area.  相似文献

The Eucalyptus longhorned borer, Phoracantha semipunctata (F.), is native to Australia, but it has been introduced without its natural enemies into many parts of the world in which its Eucalyptus spp. host has been planted. The beetle has developed large populations in these novel habitats and has been responsible for the mortality of large numbers of trees. Although there is a considerable catalogue of the parasitoids of the beetle in Australia, limited ecological information on the assemblage of parasitoids attacking P. semipunctata is available. We removed bark from 40 felled trees, recorded gallery width and bark thickness over parasitized larvae, and removed all parasitoids. Adult size, sex, and species were recorded when the parasitoid pupae eclosed. Syngaster lepidus Brullè, Jarra phoracantha Austin, Quicke, and Marsh, J. maculipennis Austin, Quicke, and Marsh, and J. painei Austin and Dangerfield were most commonly collected. The solitary parasitoid S. lepidus preferred smaller larvae than did the gregarious Jarra spp. The two species with shorter ovipositors, J. maculipennis and J. painei, parasitized larvae under thinner bark than did the other two species with longer ovipositors. There was a significant positive correlation between host larval size and number of parasitoid pupae of the gregarious species. Also, there was a significant positive correlation between host larval size and parasitoid adult size. The ecological relationships between this assemblage of parasitoids and their beetle host may be useful in establishing an effective biological control program.  相似文献

Clear-fell logging around small headwater streams in Tasmanian wet eucalypt forests was predicted to affect both the retention of leaf litter and the composition and size of leaf packs. Retention structures were surveyed in six natural streams and six streams in forest regenerated 3–5 years after clear-fell and burn logging. Logged streams had more wood, but retained less leaves than natural streams, and consequently had fewer and smaller leaf packs. Leaf packs from natural streams contained 200% more leaves, bark and twigs than packs from logged streams. The effect of buoyancy on leaf retention was assessed with release and recapture of marked Eucalyptus obliqua and Nothofagus cunninghamii leaves. Eucalypt leaves were more likely to be trapped by retention structures on the bed of the stream, while smaller, more buoyant N. cunninghamii leaves were mainly trapped by leaf packs. Leaf packs in natural streams were formed on a matrix of small twigs and long strips of bark, shed from the upper branches of mature stringybark eucalypts, while leaf retention was reduced in logged streams because there are no mature trees to provide effective retention structures. Changes to the channel form increase both discharge and sedimentation. These factors have strong implications for downstream nutrient processing and riverine food webs.  相似文献

Alginate encapsulation is a simple and cost-effective technique to preserve plant germplasm but there are only a few reports available on preservation of encapsulated explants of two highly valuable groups of tropical trees, the eucalypts (Myrtaceae) and mahoganies (Meliaceae). This study investigated alginate encapsulation for preservation of the eucalypt hybrid, Corymbia torelliana × C. citriodora, and the African mahogany, Khaya senegalensis. We assessed shoot regrowth of encapsulated shoot tips and nodes after storage for 0, 3, 6 and 12 months on media varying in sucrose and nutrient content, under storage conditions of 14°C and zero-irradiance. Encapsulated explants of both trees were preserved most effectively on high-nutrient (half-strength Murashige and Skoog) medium containing 1% sucrose, which provided very high frequencies of shoot regrowth (92–100% for Corymbia and 71–98% for Khaya) and excellent shoot development after 12 months’ storage. This technique provides an extremely efficient means for storage and exchange of eucalypts and mahoganies, ideally suited for incorporation into plant breeding and germplasm conservation programs.  相似文献

树皮是维管形成层以外的所有组织,其功能性状是反映植物生态适应策略的重要研究对象。为了揭示亚热带山地乔、灌木小枝树皮功能性状特征及其关联性,采用独立样本T检验和标准主轴回归方法对武夷山19种常见木本植物小枝树皮的主要功能性状的基本特征及其相关性进行了分析。结果发现:(1)树皮厚度、树皮密度与树皮含水量在乔、灌木之间无显著差异,其均值分别为(0.78±0.06)mm、(0.58±0.03)mg/cm3和(155.07±14.16)%。树皮碳(C)、氮(N)、磷(P)生态化学计量特征在乔、灌木之间差异也不显著,C、N、P平均值分别为(492.43±4.25)mg/g、(8.90±0.74)mg/g和(0.61±0.06)mg/g,树皮C∶N、C∶P与N∶P平均值分别为60.76±4.17、905.53±67.36与15.19±0.84。(2)树皮性状之间存在关联,其中树皮厚度与密度、密度与含水量均呈异速生长关系,而树皮厚度与含水量、氮含量与磷含量均呈等速生长关系。乔木树皮碳含量和磷含量间、灌木树皮密度和氮含量间均呈异速生长关系,乔木与灌木各性状间关系差异不显著。结果表明...  相似文献

Decomposing coarse woody debris (CWD) is a conspicuous and important component of forest ecosystems. Seasonal temperature and precipitation patterns influence heterotroph activity, which determines the rate of CWD decomposition. We tested the hypothesis that moisture content and heterotroph community composition influence carbon flux in freshly-cut Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) logs. To evaluate the effects of physical penetration of bark and wood and transmission of basidiomycete compared with ascomycete fungi by insects, 360 experimental logs were assigned to five replicate sites, each with 12 heterotroph×moisture treatment combinations in 1995. Half of the logs in each heterotroph treatment received normal rainfall and half were placed individually under elevated clear plastic tents to reduce water inputs. Respiration was measured every 1–3 months. In 1996 and 1997 a different log representing each treatment combination was harvested from each replicate and analyzed for the presence of inoculated and colonizing fungi. Logs inoculated with decay fungi had higher respiration than uninoculated logs but this effect only approached significance (P=0.08) during the first season. Respiration was significantly higher in sheltered than in exposed logs. Our results indicate that respiration and wood decomposition rates may be depressed by high moisture content in the wet forests of the coastal Pacific Northwest. 1 A field experiment was carried out to test the hypothesis that treatment of Norway spruce trees with the Ips typographus-transmitted blue-stain fungus Ceratocystis polonica enhances tree resistance to later mass attack by this bark beetle. 2 Twenty-five mature trees were pretreated by inoculating a non-lethal dose of the fungus into the bark, while 18 trees served as untreated controls. Three and a half weeks after treatment a bark beetle attack was initiated by attaching dispensers with I. typographus pheromone to the tree trunks. 3 A significantly larger proportion (67%) of the control trees than of the pretreated trees (36%) were killed by the beetle attack. The result is discussed in relation to recent results regarding defence mechanisms in Norway spruce trees.  相似文献

The terpenoid and phenolic constituents of conifers have been implicated in protecting trees from infestation by bark beetles and phytopathogenic fungi, but it has been difficult to prove these defensive roles under natural conditions. We used methyl jasmonate, a well-known inducer of plant defense responses, to manipulate the biochemistry and anatomy of mature Picea abies (Norway spruce) trees and to test their resistance to attack by Ips typographus (the spruce bark beetle). Bark sections of P. abies treated with methyl jasmonate had significantly less I. typographus colonization than bark sections in the controls and exhibited shorter parental galleries and fewer eggs had been deposited. The numbers of beetles that emerged and mean dry weight per beetle were also significantly lower in methyl jasmonate-treated bark. In addition, fewer beetles were attracted to conspecifics tunneling in methyl jasmonate-treated bark. Stem sections of P. abies treated with methyl jasmonate had an increased number of traumatic resin ducts and a higher concentration of terpenes than untreated sections, whereas the concentration of soluble phenolics did not differ between treatments. The increased amount of terpenoid resin present in methyl jasmonate-treated bark could be directly responsible for the observed decrease in I. typographus colonization and reproduction.  相似文献

The mango sudden death syndrome has become a serious threat to the mango industry and caused significant decline in mango production worldwide. The bark beetle Hypocryphalus mangiferae (Stebbing) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) has been suggested as a potential vector of the disease based primarily on field observations with little or no supporting empirical data. In this study, we investigated the role of infected mango trees in host attraction and colonization by H. mangiferae to determine if beetle attack and colonization contributes to the disease progression on mango trees. Initially, the role of various stress factors on beetle attraction and disease progression was assessed under lathe house conditions from 2008 to 2009. Results suggest that symptomatic or recently inoculated mango trees (without any obvious symptoms) are preferentially colonized by H. mangiferae. Although not significant, high numbers of beetles attacked stressed or wounded mango trees, compared to healthy or dead mango trees. Disease symptoms after beetle colonization, such as bark splitting, wilting and oozing, were further evaluated. These symptoms showed positive correlation with the degree of disease severity and host plant condition. Furthermore, two fungi, Ceratocystis fimbriata and Lasiodiplodia theobromae, were frequently isolated from the beetle and beetle-colonized trees. Based on these findings, they suggests that H. mangiferae can vector multiple fungi associated with mango sudden decline disease and play a significant role in outbreaks of this disease.  相似文献

Seasonal and long-term changes in the water balance of conifer logs during the first 8 years of decomposition were studied in an old-growth Pseudotsuga/Tsuga forest in the Oregon Cascade Mountains. Measurements were made of the moisture content of outer bark, inner bark, sapwood, and heartwood and of the flow of water into and out of logs of four species (Abies amabilis, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Thuja plicata, and Tsuga heterophylla). After the logs had decomposed from 1 to 2 years, 38–47% of the canopy throughfall landing upon them ran off the surface, 29–34% leached from the bottom, and 21–30% was absorbed and evaporated. After 8 years of decomposition, water entering and then leaching from logs increased 1.3 times while runoff decreased a similar amount. The proportion of water stored by and evaporated from logs in this study indicates that in old growth forests they may intercept 2–5% of the canopy throughfall to the forest floor and that, even in early stages of decomposition, they may affect the hydrological cycle of Pacific Northwest old-growth forests.This is paper 2945 of the Forest Research Laboratory, Oregon State University, Corvallis  相似文献

Amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) are a useful molecular tool for studying species with little available genetic information; however, since universal primers are used contaminant DNA from non-target organisms may also be amplified. Cambium tissue may contain fewer biotic contaminants or plant defense chemicals, than the more commonly used leaf tissue, and therefore be more suitable for use as a source of DNA when using universal primers. On the other hand, cambium tissue can be difficult to identify, yields low DNA and requires the bark of the tree to be damaged, thereby increasing the risk of introducing disease. We show that within two tropical tree species, there are few differences between AFLP profiles obtained from either cambium or leaf tissue from the same tree. We studied 50 Brosimum alicastrum individuals at 119 AFLP loci and 40 Swietenia macrophylla individuals at 112 AFLP loci. The matrix of S?rensen similarity indices between individual AFLP profiles for cambium samples was strongly correlated to the matrix for leaf samples in each species (Mantel test; B. alicastrum r = 0.815, P < 0.001; S. macrophylla r = 0.895, P < 0.001). The phylogenetic relationship between the trees studied did not differ dependent on tissue type used and therefore shows that both tissues can be used within a single study without introducing substantial error.  相似文献
