This paper studies the genetic importance of growth curve parameters and their relevance as selection criteria in breeding programmes of Segureño sheep. Logistic and Verhulst growth functions were chosen for their best fit to BW/age in this breed; the first showed the best general fit and the second the best individual fit. Live weights of 41 330 individuals from the historical archives of the National Association of Segureña Sheep Breeders were used in the analysis. The progeny of 1464 rams and 27 048 ewes were used to study the genetic and phenotypic parameters of growth curve parameters and derived traits. Reproductive management in the population consists in controlled natural mating inside every herd, with a minimum of 15% of the females fertilized by artificial insemination with fresh semen; with the purpose being the herd genetic connections, all herd genealogies are screened with DNA markers. Estimates of growth curve parameters from birth to 80 days were obtained for each individual and each function by the non-linear regression procedure using IBM SPSS statistics (version 21) with the Levenberg–Marquart estimation method. (Co)variance components and genetic parameters were estimated by using the REML/Animal model methodology. The heritability of mature weight was estimated as 0.41±0.042 and 0.38±0.021 with the logistic and Verhulst models, respectively, and the heritability of other parameters ranged from 0.41 to 0.62 and 0.37 to 0.61, with the models, respectively. A negative genetic correlation between mature weight and rate of maturing was found.  相似文献

The heterogeneity of climate and different agro-ecological conditions in Iran have resulted in development of 27 indigenous sheep breeds. Wild Asiatic mouflon (Ovis orientalis) is believed to be the ancestor of Iranian sheep. Evaluation of genetic diversity and population structure within and among domestic breeds has important implications for animal breeding programs and genetic resources management. Based on 50K SNP genotype data, we studied the genetic diversity of five indigenous Iranian sheep breeds: Afshari (n = 37), Moghani (n = 34), Qezel (n = 35), Zel (n = 46) and Lori-Bakhtiari (n = 46), and Asiatic mouflon (n = 8) sampled from Iran. Furthermore, genetic diversity and the breed admixture of Iranian sheep were assessed on a larger geographic scale using a reference panel comprising: three indigenous Afghan breeds – Arabi (n = 15), Balouchi (n = 15) and Gadik (n = 15); three indigenous breeds from Turkey and Cyprus – Cyprus Fat Tail (n = 30), Karakas (n = 18) and Norduz (n = 20); and three commercial European breeds – Suffolk (n = 19), Comisana (n = 24) and Engadine Red Sheep (n = 24). The results revealed that the investigated breeds are divided into five genetically distinct clusters according to their geographic origin. Afshari was closest to the local mouflon population and showed signs of mouflon admixture. Qezel was identified as a hybrid sheep breed. Much evidence supported the Afghan breeds being identical. Inbreeding values, which were estimated based on ROHs, were highest for Suffolk (FROH = 0.0544) and lowest for Balouchi (FROH = 0.0078). In conclusion, analysis of selected breeds from neighboring countries along with Asiatic mouflon gave a deeper insight into the evolutionary history and origin of Iranian sheep with important implications for future breed management.  相似文献

The identification of the presence of genotype by environment interaction effects on important traits in Holstein cattle allows for the use of international genetic evaluations and a more efficient design of regional genetic evaluation programmes. The aim of this study was to determine the genotype × environment interaction effects in Chilean Holstein dairy cattle through the analysis of records corresponding to calvings between 1998 and 2015. Herds were classified in the central and southern regions of Chile based on herd location as well as by high and low levels of production environments based on the fat plus protein yield averages per herd within each region. The central region has a Mediterranean climate and a confined production system while the southern region has a humid temperate climate and a production system based on grazing with supplementation. Traits studied were milk yield (MY), fat yield (FY), protein yield (PY), fat content (FC) and protein content (PC) by lactation, age at first calving (AFC) and calving interval (CI). Several four-trait mixed animal models were applied to environmental category data as different traits, which included herd-year-calving season (herd-year-birth season for AFC) and lactation number as fixed effects, and animal additive genetic, sire-herd, permanent environment and residual effects as random effects. Genetic correlations (rg) for MY, FY, FC, PC and CI were found to decrease as differences between environmental categories increased. The rg between the most extreme environmental categories considered in this study for AFC (0.26) was the only one found statistically lower than 0.60. Genetic correlation values statistically lower than 0.80 (P < 0.05) were observed for AFC, CI, MY, FY and PY between some environmental categories. If separate genetic evaluations are adopted as practical criteria when the value of rg is lower than 0.60, the consequence of improving a multi-trait economic breeding objective in this population is likely to be small unless extreme environmental categories are considered. However, a moderate decrease in selection response and re-ranking of selection candidates is expected for AFC, CI and yield traits when selection is performed in different environmental conditions. Genotype × environment interaction effects involving production systems in a Mediterranean climate and confinement vs. Temperate Oceanic climate and grazing with supplementation, and between two fat plus protein yield level categories within each environment, were at most moderate for the studied traits.  相似文献

Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for several fruit traits in tomato were mapped and characterized in a backcross population of an interspecific cross between Lycopersicon esculentum fresh-marker breeding line NC84173 and L. pimpinellifolium accession LA722. A molecular linkage map of this cross that was previously constructed based on 119 BC1 individuals and 151 RFLP markers was used for the QTL mapping. The parental lines and 119 BC1S1 families (self-pollinated progeny of BC1 individuals) were grown under field conditions at two locations, Rock Spring, PA, and Davis, CA, and fruits were scored for weight (FW), polar (PD) and equatorial diameters (ED), shape (FS), total soluble solids content (SSC), pH and lycopene content (LYC). For each trait, between 4 and 10 QTLs were identified with individual effects ranging between 4.4% and 32.9% and multilocus QTL effects ranging between 39% and 75% of the total phenotypic variation. Most QTL effects were predictable from the parental phenotypes, and several QTLs were identified that affected more than one trait. A few pairwise epistatic interactions were detected between QTL-linked and QTL-unlinked markers. Despite great differences between PA and CA growing conditions, the majority of FW QTLs (78%) and SSC QTLs (75%) in the two locations shared similar genomic positions. Almost all of the QTLs that were identified in the present study for FW and SSC were previously identified in six other studies that used different interspecific crosses of tomato; this indicates conservation of QTLs for fruit traits across tomato species. Altogether, the seven studies identified at least 28 QTLs for FW and 32 QTLs for SSC on the 12 tomato chromosomes. However, for each trait a few major QTLs were commonly identified in 4 or more studies; such ‘popular’ QTLs should be of considerable interest for breeding purposes as well as basic research towards cloning of QTLs. Notably, a majority of QTLs for increased SSC also contributed to decreased fruit size. Therefore, to significantly increase SSC of the cultivated tomato, some compromise in fruit size may be unavoidable. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to evaluate microMOSFET as in-vivo dosimeter in 6 MV shaped-beam radiosurgery for field sizes down to 6 × 6 mm2. A homemade build-up cap was developed and its use with microMOSFET was evaluated down to 6 × 6 mm2. The study with the homemade build-up cap was performed considering its influence on field size over-cover occurring at surface, achievement of the overall process of electronic equilibrium, dose deposition along beam axis and dose attenuation. An optimized calibration method has been validated using MOSFET in shaped-beam radiosurgery for field sizes from 98 × 98 down to 18 × 18 mm2. The method was detailed in a previous study and validated in irregular field shapes series measurements performed on a head phantom. The optimized calibration method was applied to microMOSFET equipped with homemade build-up cap down to 6 × 6 mm2. Using the same irregular field shapes, dose measurements were performed on head phantom. MicroMOSFET results were compared to previous MOSFET ones. Additional irregular field shapes down to 8.8 × 8.8 mm2 were studied with microMOSFET. Isocenter dose attenuation due to the homemade build-up cap over the microMOSFET was near 2% irrespective of field size. Our results suggested that microMOSFET equipped with homemade build-up cap is suitable for in-vivo dosimetry in shaped-beam radiosurgery for field sizes down to 6 × 6 mm2 and therefore that the required build-up cap dimensions to perform entrance in-vivo dosimetry in small-fields have to ensure only partial charge particle equilibrium.  相似文献

Cultivation of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) requires irrigation. Improving crop water use efficiency (WUE) is important for future production. Fragaria chiloensis, a progenitor of cultivated strawberry, grows in sandy soils, and may prove useful in breeding for improved WUE. Little, however, is known about variation in drought tolerance within this species. This research explores drought tolerance in a range of F. chiloensis and F. × ananassa genotypes. Four cultivars of F. × ananassa and four accessions of F. chiloensis were compared when well watered, and when subjected to a water deficit (65% of evapotranspiration). New leaf production, stomatal conductance, and photosynthetic rate were significantly reduced under water deficit, and also significantly differed between genotypes. A significant interaction of genotype and irrigation was found for transpiration rate, leaf area and dry mass, production of runners, predawn water potential, a measure of transpiration efficiency (shoot biomass produced per litre water transpired), and carbon isotope composition, indicating that some genotypes were more severely affected by water deficit than others. The South American F. chiloensis accession ‘Manzanar Alto’ had a similar rate of transpiration to the commercial cultivars, but the remaining (North American) F. chiloensis accessions used far less water than the F. × ananassa. Well-watered F. chiloensis plants used less water than water-limited plants of the F. × ananassa cultivar ‘Florence’. Transpiration efficiency of the F. chiloensis accession ‘BSP14’ was improved by water deficit: this was the only genotype not to show a reduction in leaf area and dry mass under water deficit. Greater drought resistance in three F. chiloensis accessions compared to F. × ananassa results from a conservative vegetative growth strategy, reducing loss of water.  相似文献

Brazilian beef cattle are raised predominantly on pasture in a wide range of environments. In this scenario, genotype by environment (G×E) interaction is an important source of phenotypic variation in the reproductive traits. Hence, the evaluation of G×E interactions for heifer’s early pregnancy (HP) and scrotal circumference (SC) traits in Nellore cattle, belonging to three breeding programs, was carried out to determine the animal’s sensitivity to the environmental conditions (EC). The dataset consisted of 85 874 records for HP and 151 553 records for SC, from which 1800 heifers and 3343 young bulls were genotyped with the BovineHD BeadChip. Genotypic information for 826 sires was also used in the analyses. EC levels were based on the contemporary group solutions for yearling body weight. Linear reaction norm models (RNM), using pedigree information (RNM_A) or pedigree and genomic information (RNM_H), were used to infer G×E interactions. Two validation schemes were used to assess the predictive ability, with the following training populations: (a) forward scheme—dataset was split based on year of birth from 2008 for HP and from 2011 for SC; and (b) environment-specific scheme—low EC (−3.0 and −1.5) and high EC (1.5 and 3.0). The inclusion of the H matrix in RNM increased the genetic variance of the intercept and slope by 18.55 and 23.00% on average respectively, and provided genetic parameter estimates that were more accurate than those considering pedigree only. The same trend was observed for heritability estimates, which were 0.28–0.56 for SC and 0.26–0.49 for HP, using RNM_H, and 0.26–0.52 for SC and 0.22–0.45 for HP, using RNM_A. The lowest correlation observed between unfavorable (−3.0) and favorable (3.0) EC levels were 0.30 for HP and −0.12 for SC, indicating the presence of G×E interaction. The G×E interaction effect implied differences in animals’ genetic merit and re-ranking of animals on different environmental conditions. SNP marker–environment interaction was detected for Nellore sexual precocity indicator traits with changes in effect and variance across EC levels. The RNM_H captured G×E interaction effects better than RNM_A and improved the predictive ability by around 14.04% for SC and 21.31% for HP. Using the forward scheme increased the overall predictive ability for SC (20.55%) and HP (11.06%) compared with the environment-specific scheme. The results suggest that the inclusion of genomic information combined with the pedigree to assess the G×E interaction leads to more accurate variance components and genetic parameter estimates.  相似文献

We herein report the results of a whole genome scan performed in a Piétrain × Large White intercross counting 525 offspring to map QTL influencing economically important growth and carcass traits. We report experiment-wide significant lod scores (> 4.6 for meatiness and fat deposition on chromosome SSC2, and for average daily gain and carcass length on chromosome SSC7. Additional suggestive lod scores (> 3.3) for fat deposition are reported on chromosomes SSC1, SSC7 and SSC13. A significant dominance deviation was found for the QTL on SSC1, while the hypothesis of an additive QTL could not be rejected for the QTL on SSC7 and SSC13. No evidence for imprinted QTL could be found for QTL other than the one previously reported on SSC2.  相似文献

Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for body weight and tail length are mapped in an F2 population of 927 C57BL/6J × DBA/2J mice. We test the concordance between the locations of the mapped QTLs with those detected by changes of marker frequency under artificial selection in a previous experiment with the same base population. The directions of effects of the QTLs are generally in agreement, and in many cases significant QTLs are found in similar map positions, but there are also discrepancies between the two experiments. There are indications of age-specific QTL effects on growth. For body weight traits, the genetic variation in the F2 appears to result from many loci with relatively small effects. For tail length at 10 weeks, however, a single QTL on Chromosome (Chr) 1 with a peak LOD score of ∼33 contributes most of the genetic variation detected, changes the trait value by about 6%, and explains about 20% of the phenotypic variance of the trait. Resilience can be defined as the ability of an animal to remain productive in the face of diverse environmental challenges. Several factors contribute to an animal’s resilience including its ability to resist disease, cope with climatic extremes and respond to stressors. Immune competence, a proxy trait for general disease resistance, is expected to contribute to an animal’s resilience. This research aimed to develop a practical method to assess immune competence in Merino sheep which would not restrict the future sale of tested animals, and to estimate genetic parameters associated with the novel trait. We also aimed to explore associations between immune competence and other industry-relevant disease resistance and fitness-related traits and to assess the ability of immune competence phenotypes to predict health outcomes. Here, the ability of Merino wethers (n = 1 339) to mount both an antibody-mediated and cell-mediated immune response was used to define their immune competence phenotype. For that purpose, antigens in a commercial vaccine were administered at the commencement of weaning and their responses were assessed. Univariate sire models were used to estimate variance components and heritabilities for immune competence and its component traits. Bivariate sire models were used to estimate genetic correlations between immune competence and a range of disease resistance and fitness-related traits. The heritability of immune competence and its component traits, antibody-mediated immune response and cell-mediated immune response were estimated at 0.49 ± 0.14, 0.52 ± 0.14 and 0.36 ± 0.11, respectively. Immune competence was favourably genetically correlated with breech flystrike incidence (?0.44 ± 0.39), worm egg count (?0.19 ± 0.23), dag score (?0.26 ± 0.31) and fitness compromise (?0.35 ± 0.24) but not fleece rot (0.17 ± 0.23). Results suggest that selection for immune competence has the potential to improve the resilience of Merino sheep; however, due to the large standard errors associated with correlation estimates reported here, further studies will be required in larger populations to validate associations between immune competence and disease resistance and fitness traits in Australian Merino sheep.  相似文献

A mapping population of 104 F(3) lines of pearl millet, derived from a cross between two inbred lines H 77/833-2 x PRLT 2/89-33, was evaluated, as testcrosses on a common tester, for traits determining grain and stover yield in seven different field trials, distributed over 3 years and two seasons. The total genetic variation was partitioned into effects due to season (S), genotype (G), genotype x season interaction (G x S), and genotype x environment-within-season interaction [G x E(S)]. QTLs were determined for traits for their G, G x S, and G x E(S) effects, to assess the magnitude and the nature (cross over/non-crossover) of environmental interaction effects on individual QTLs. QTLs for some traits were associated with G effects only, while others were associated with the effects of both G and G x S and/or G, G x S and G x E(S) effects. The major G x S QTLs detected were for flowering time (on LG 4 and LG 6), and mapped to the same intervals as G x S QTLs for several other traits (including stover yield, harvest index, biomass yield and panicle number m(-2)). All three QTLs detected for grain yield were unaffected by G x S interaction however. All three QTLs for stover yield (mapping on LG 2, LG 4 and LG 6) and one of the three QTLs for grain yield (mapping on LG 4) were also free of QTL x E(S) interactions. The grain yield QTLs that were affected by QTL x E(S) interactions (mapping on LG 2 and LG 6), appeared to be linked to parallel QTL x E(S) interactions of the QTLs for panicle number m(-2) on (LG 2) and of QTLs for both panicle number m(-2) and harvest index (LG 6). In general, QTL x E(S) interactions were more frequently observed for component traits of grain and stover yield, than for grain or stover yield per se.  相似文献

This study aimed to assess the relationship of 3 spectrin repeat containing nuclear envelope protein 1 (SYNE1) and 4 KH domain containing RNA binding (QK1) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), their haplotypes, gene-gene (G × G), gene-environment (G × E) interactions and hypercholesterolaemia (HCH) and hypertriglyceridaemia (HTG) in the Chinese Maonan minority. The genetic make-up of the SYNE1-QK1 SNPs in 1932 unrelated subjects (normal, 641; HCH, 649; and HTG, 642) was obtained by next-generation sequencing technologies. The genotypic frequencies of following SNPs were suggestively distinctive between the control and HCH groups (rs2623963, rs7745725, rs9459317, rs16897566), or between the control and HTG groups (rs2623963, rs1358317, rs7745725, rs1923608, rs16897566 SNPs; P < .05, respectively). Multiple-locus linkage disequilibrium analysis indicated that the identified SNPs were not inherited independently. Several haplotypes and gene-gene interaction haplotypes among the detected SNPs may be related with an increased morbidity of HCH (C-G-A, C-G-G and C-G-G-T-C-A-T) and HTG (C-G-G, G-T-G-C, C-G-G-G-T-G-C and C-G-G-T-C-A-T), whereas others may be related with an decreased risk of HCH (G-A-A, G-C-A-T, C-A-A-T-C-A-T and G-A-A-G-C-A-T) and HTG (G-A-A, G-C-A-T, C-A-A-T-C-A-T and G-A-A-G-C-A-T). The association evaluation based on haplotypes and gene-gene interactions could improve the power of detecting the risk of dyslipidaemia than anyone of SNP alone. There was significant three-locus model involving SNP-SNP, haplotype-haplotype/environment and G × G interactions (P < .05-0.001) that were detected by GMDR in HCH and HTG groups. Different interactions between genetic and environmental factors would produce different redundancy or synergy effects on the morbidity of HCH and/or HTG.  相似文献

The International Trypanotolerance Centre's small ruminant breeding programme was initiated in 1995. The aim was to increase the efficiency of meat production and the trypanotolerance of the animals (sheep and goat). To achieve that goal, selection was based on estimated breeding values for daily weight gain from 4 to 12 months of age measured on trypanotolerance challenge. The purpose of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for growth traits and to evaluate genetic trends in West African Dwarf goat and Djallonké sheep resulting from the breeding programme under a low input production environment. Data for West African Dwarf goat and Djallonké sheep included birth weight (BW), weaning weight (W120), yearling weight (W360), pre-weaning (GR0–4) and post-weaning (GR4–12) growth rate. The data were analysed using an animal model that accounted for fixed effects of sex, year of birth, season of birth, parity of the dam, type of birth and the interaction year by season of birth. Estimates of heritability for BW, W120, W360, GR0–4 and GR4–12 were 0.5, 0.43, 0.30, 0.32 and 0.11 for goats and 0.39, 0.54, 0.21, 0.54 and 0.23 for sheep, respectively. The genetic correlation between BW and W120 was high for goats (0.74) and moderate for sheep (0.47). Genetic correlations between W120 and GR4–12 were high (0.92) for goats and moderate (0.49) for sheep. Between GR0–4 and BW the correlation was positive but low for sheep (0.26) and moderate for goats (0.60). Positive trends were found in mean estimated breeding values for animals born in the period 1995–2002 which demonstrated the effectiveness of the implemented breeding programs.  相似文献

The OLA genic frequencies were studied in both normal "Préalpe" Sheep and those affected with Scrapie. In the non-affected Sheep of contaminated flocks, frequencies were generally decreased, compared with frequencies of the same factors in sick Sheep or in non-infected controls. Three OLA-A genes significantly decreased; at this locus, results in "Préalpe" and "Ile-de-France" Sheep were inversed. This observation excludes OLA genes being involved in pathogeny or resistance to the disease, but suggests the existence of a linkage between the OLA loci and at least one resistance or susceptibility locus.  相似文献

Baseline erythroid indices are increasingly involved as risk factors for common complex diseases in humans. However, little is known about the genetic architecture of baseline erythroid traits in pigs. In this study, hematocrit (Hct), hemoglobin (Hgb), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), red blood cell (RBC), and red cell distribution width (RDW) were measured in 1420 (day 18), 1410 (day 46), and 1033 (day 240) F(2) pigs from a White Duroc x Erhualian intercross resource population. The entire resource population was genotyped for 183 microsatellite loci across the pig genome, and the quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis was performed for all erythroid-related traits measured with QTL Express based on a least-squares method. A total of 101 QTL, including 46 genome-wide significant QTL and 55 chromosome-wide significant QTL, regulating erythroid traits were found on all pig chromosomes (SSC) except for SSC15 and SSC18. The genome-wide significant QTL were mainly localized on SSC1, 7, 8, 10, and X. These results confirmed most of QTL previously identified in the swine. More importantly, this study detected age-specific QTL for baseline erythroid traits in pigs for the first time. Notably, the QTL for MCV and MCH on day 18 on SSC8 with small intervals of 3 and 4 cM, respectively, provided a good starting point for identifying causal genes underlying MCV and MCH in the future.  相似文献

Peptidomic analysis was used to compare the diversity of host-defense peptides in norepinephrine-stimulated skin secretions from laboratory-generated female F1 hybrids of Xenopus laevis and Xenopus borealis (Pipidae). Skin secretions of hybrids with maternal X. laevis (XLB) contained 12 antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), comprising 8 from X. laevis and 4 from X. borealis. Magainin-B1, XPF-B1, PGLa-B1 CPF-B2, CPF-B3 and CPF-B4 from X. borealis and XPF-1, XPF-2, and CPF-6 from X. laevis were not detected and CPF-1 and CPF-7 were present in low concentration. The secretions contained caerulein and caerulein-B1 derived from both parents but lacked X. laevis xenopsin and X. borealis caerulein-B2. Skin secretions of hybrids with maternal X. borealis (XBL) contained 14 AMPs comprising 6 from X. borealis and 8 from X. laevis. Magainin-B1, XPF-B1, PGLa-B1, CPF-B2, XPF-1, CPF-5, and CPF-7 were absent and CPF-B3, CPF-B4, CPF-1 and CPF-6 were present only in low concentration. Xenopsin and caerulein were identified in the secretions but caerulein-B2 was absent and caerulein-B1was present in low concentration. No peptides were identified in secretions of either XLB or XBL hybrids that were not present in the parental species. The data indicate that hybridization between X. laevis and X. borealis results in increased diversity of host-defense peptides in skin secretions but point to extensive AMP gene silencing compared with previously studied female X. laevis × X. muelleri F1 hybrids and no novel peptide expression.  相似文献

Non-linear models were analysed to describe both the biological and commercial growth curves of the Segureña sheep, one of the most important Spanish breeds. We evaluated Brody, von Bertalanffy, Verhulst, logistic and Gompertz models, using historical data from the National Association of Segureña Sheep Breeders (ANCOS). These records were collected between 2000 and 2013, from a total of 129 610 weight observations ranging from birth to adulthood. The aim of this research was to establish the mathematical behaviour of body development throughout this breed’s commercial life (birth to slaughter) and biological life (birth to adulthood); comparison between both slopes gives important information regarding the best time for slaughter, informs dietary advice according to animals’ needs, permits economical predictions of productions and, by using the curve parameters as selection criteria, enables improvements in growth characteristics of the breed. Models were fitted according to the non-linear regression procedure of statistical package SPSS version19. Model parameters were estimated using the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. Candidate models were compared using the determinative coefficient, mean square error, number of iterations, Akaike information coefficient and biological coherence of the estimated parameters. The von Bertalanffy and logistic models were found to be best suited to the biological and commercial growth curves, respectively, for both sexes. The Brody equation was found to be unsuitable for studying the commercial growth curve. Differences between the parameters in both sexes indicate a strong impact of sexual dimorphism on growth. This can emphasize the value of the highest growth rate for females, indicating that they reach maturity earlier.  相似文献
