The DD-136 strain of Neoaplectana carpocapsae is capable of continued movement over dry surfaces at 35 and 5 C if relative humidity (RH) ranges above 90%. It can also live in the field on foliage for several hours at night and up to 24 days in bark beetle tunnels in pine bolts.Further nematode research should be directed toward a few insect species where precipitation and RH are suitable for the dispersion of the dauerlarvae. Such areas in the US are located in the Southeast, Northeast, and on the Northwest Coast.  相似文献

Laboratory tests determined the lateral and vertical dispersal patterns of Neoaplectana carpocapsae in sand. In the vertical tests, placement of infective juveniles 15 cm below the sand''s surface resulted in the majority (77%) being recovered above the point of placement after 48 h. Placement of the nematodes on the sand''s surface resulted in the majority (90.4%) remaining within 1 cm of the sand''s surface. Placement of nematodes at depths of 2.5 cm and 5.0 cm below the sand''s surface also resulted in little nematode dispersal. However, vertical hioassay tests showed that juvenile nematodes placed on the sand''s surface dispersed 12 cm down to infect 67% of the Galleria mellonella pupae placed at the depth. Conversely, when nematodes were placed 11 cm below the insect pupae no infection was observed, but 53% infection occurred when nematodes were 7 cm below the site of the insect pupae. In lateral dispersal, 87% of the nematodes rentained within 2 cm of the placement site, although 0.5% were recovered at 12-14 cm away from the point of placement. Lateral bioassay tests indicated that the nematodes were capable of infecting 90, 35, and 5% of the G. mellonella pupae at 7 cm, 10 cm, and 14 cm from the point of placement, respectively.  相似文献

Two newly developed media, H4 and H7, were found to be highly suitable for culturing Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis and B. sphaericus, respectively. These media contained 0.05% K2HPO4 and 4% HDL (H4 medium) or 0.05% K2HPO4 and 7% HDL (H7 medium); HDL is the by-product from a monosodium glutamate factory. Tests to compare endospore formation and toxicity values of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis in H4 medium and nutrient broth supplemented with salts and glucose (NBSG) medium were carried out in a 3-liter fermentor. The viable cell count and LC50 value of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis in H4 medium at 48 hr were 2.5 × 108 cells/ml and 10?7.2 (dilution), respectively, while those in NBSG medium were 1.6 × 108 cells/ml and 10?6.5, respectively. In the case of B. sphaericus grown in H7 medium, the number of cells and LC50 value were found to be 1.4 × 109 cells/ml and 10?7.8, respectively. B. sphaericus grown in nutrient broth supplemented with salt and yeast extract (NBSY) were found to produce 6.4 × 108 cells/ml and an LC50 value of 10?6.8. The toxicity of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis was tested against Aedes aegypti larvae, while that of B. sphaericus was tested against Culex quinquefasciatus. The cost of 10 liters of medium for production of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis and in B. sphaericus and H4 and H7 was $0.02 and $0.03, respectively. The cost of these newly developed media was much less than that of NBSG medium ($7.05 per 10 liters) for cultivation of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis and NBSY medium ($11.67 per 10 liters) for cultivation of B. sphaericus.  相似文献

Physiological data are needed for life history studies on krill, and as parameters for input into energy budgets and models. In conjunction with moult and growth data, these may also prove useful for assessing the fishable biomass of krill. Here, the development of physiological concepts in experimental krill research is briefly evaluated, with emphasis on the gaps to be filled. Krill growth is very flexible, as well as strongly temperature and nutrition dependent. The polar Antarctic krill Euphausia superba grows as fast as the boreal species Meganyctiphanes norvegica, at least during the first 2.5 years, and the species are comparable in terms of physiological plasticity. Accordingly, as krill appear to adjust quickly to specific laboratory conditions, short-term experiments are essential if field conditions are to be reflected as closely as possible. Furthermore, direct comparisons between laboratory experiments and swarming studies in the field are advantageous. For these, M. norvegica is particularly well-suited, as swarms can be followed over longer times and more easily than in E. superba. For example, processes of moult and reproduction were found to be highly coordinated in swarms and populations of Northern krill. For this species a conceptual model of reproduction was developed based on a combination of short-term laboratory observations coupled with field data on moult and ovary stages. In further physiological experiments krill should be studied as groups when swarming. Using proxies, that is applying physiological and/or biochemical methods side by side, is a promising way to enhance the reliability of life history data.  相似文献

Biological control of snail-borne diseases: a review   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The need for alternatives to chemical control of snail-borne diseases and the growing interest in biological control methods are noted. Two groups of natural enemies of snails reviewed as especially promising for biological control are competing and predatory snails, and predatory fly larvae. Potentially useful natural enemies of the intramolluscan stages of trematodes include microsporidian infections and antagonistic trematode larvae. More unusual methods of biological control include the use of a toxic plant product (endod) and genetic manipulation of snails to decrease their susceptibility to trematode infection. The disappointing progress in biological control of snail-borne diseases in the past is attributed largely to delay in recognizing the need for alternatives to chemical control and to lack of interdisciplinary communication.  相似文献

Our current understanding of the mechanisms that lead to successful biological invasions is limited. Although adaptations play a central role in biological invasions, genetic studies have so far failed to produce a unified theory. The bluespotted cornetfish, a recent Red Sea invader in the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal, provides an ideal case study for research in the mechanisms of invasive genetics. In this study, we show that the invading bluespotted cornetfish underwent a severe population bottleneck that reduced the genetic diversity of this immigrant to only two mitochondrial haplotypes. Although loss of genetic diversity is considered detrimental to the need to adapt to new environments, bluespotted cornetfish experienced an unprecedented success and rapid spread across the Mediterranean.  相似文献

1. We tested the hypothesis that the non‐native rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) is less vulnerable to predators than two native species (O. propinquus and O. obscurus) it is replacing in streams of the upper Susquehanna River catchment (New York, U.S.A.). 2. We used laboratory experiments to compare species‐specific predation rates by smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) on crayfish of equal size and field tethering experiments to compare relative predation rates between native O. propinquus and non‐native O. rusticus by the suite of crayfish predators in our system. We predicted that crayfish size would affect predation rate but that predation rates would be equal among species when size was controlled. 3. We also tested for two potential artefacts of tethering. We tethered crayfish in cages to test whether the ability to escape from tethers is size specific, and we tested whether tethering alters differential predation among crayfish species by the smallmouth bass. 4. In the laboratory, smallmouth bass predation on rusty crayfish was lower than on either of the native species. In the field, predation risk for tethered crayfish was inversely related to size but did not differ among species when size was taken into account. Because rusty crayfish in the field experiment were slightly larger than the native species, as in nature, mortality was overall lower for the rusty crayfish. 5. In cages, smaller crayfish were more probably to escape from tethers than larger ones, an artefact that may partially confound results from our tethering experiments. Unexpectedly, tethering nearly eliminated predation by smallmouth bass. This artefact prevented us from testing for an interaction of tethering with differential predation and means that the results of field tethering experiments do not include any contribution from smallmouth bass predation. 6. Our experiments highlight the importance of explicitly considering potential artefacts that could confound results. 7. Our results indicate that differential predation contributes to the rusty crayfish's invasion of a stream community. In our study system, predation rates on rusty crayfish are lower than for native species mostly because of selection by predators for smaller crayfish; species‐specific characteristics such as behaviour that further reduce predation may also contribute, especially where smallmouth bass predation is important.  相似文献

Abstract A greater understanding of the relative impact of insecticide use on non‐target species is critical for the incorporation of natural enemies into integrated pest management strategies. Here we use a small‐plot field trial to examine the relative impact of an insecticide on herbivores and predators found in soybean (Glycine max L.), and to highlight the issues associated with calculating impact factors from these studies. The pyrethroid insecticide (Deltamethrin) caused a significant reduction in invertebrate abundance in the treated plots, and populations did not recover to pre‐treatment levels even 20 days after spraying. To assess the relative impact of the spray on arthropods we first examined the mean difference in abundance in each plot before and after spraying. All herbivores decreased in abundance in the sprayed plots but increased in the control plots after spraying. Most predators (excluding hemipterans) showed a decrease in the control plots but a proportionally greater decrease in the sprayed plots. Next we examined the corrected percentage population reduction calculated using Abbott's formula. All predators (including Araneae) experienced a greater reduction (mean 87% ± 3.54 SE) than herbivores (mean 56% ± 4.37 SE) and Araneae alone (mean 71% ± 8.12 SE). The range in values across the plots varied and made categorising overall impact subjective for some taxa. Despite the constraints associated with small‐plot trials, by using a combination of impact factors and examining community‐level response across time, we did get some indication of the likely impact of this insecticide if used in a commercial situation.  相似文献

There are few insecticidal options for potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), control late in the growing season. We evaluated the PTM granulovirus (PoGV) and Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner ssp. kurstaki (Btk) for season‐long control of PTM on potato foliage in 2006 and 2007. Compared to untreated controls, 10 weekly applications of PoGV (1013 occlusion bodies/ha) reduced PTM populations in replicated 1‐m3 field cages by 86–96% on pre‐harvest foliage and 90–97% on tubers added to cages shortly before harvest. Infection rates of 82–95% of L4 larvae by PoGV were noted within individual larval cohorts. Equivalently timed Btk treatments (1.12 kg product/ha) were significantly less effective at population suppression, with a 36–76% reduction in larvae recovered from tubers added to cages. A PoGV/Btk alternation was significantly more effective than Btk alone and as effective as PoGV in 2007, but not in 2006. There was some evidence that reduced rate PoGV treatments (10% rate or 50% application frequency) were less effective than the standard program. There were no treatment effects on percentage of tubers growing in the ground that were infested at harvest, which remained comparatively low at ≤8.1%. Bioassays were conducted to evaluate the residual activities of foliar deposits. Early‐season applications were highly effective for the first 24 h (≥93% mortality) with a steady decline in activity over 10 days. A second application, applied later in the season, showed similar patterns, although in this case Btk was less persistent than PoGV, whereas both agents provided significant larval mortality compared with controls over 14 days. Both PoGV and Btk provide alternatives to manage field infestations of PTM prior to harvest, thus reducing the risk of tuber infestations in storage.  相似文献

The subtribe Diabroticina is a large group of New World Chrysomelidae that includes corn rootworms, cucumber beetles and other pests. Recent introductions of Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte into Europe, and the development of resistances to current management practices of rootworms in the USA have increased interest in new sustainable options for managing those pests. The only parasitoids that have been shown to consistently target and develop inside the beetle adults are Centistes gasseni Shaw, Centistes diabroticae Gahan (both Hym.: Braconidae), and Celatoria diabroticae Shimer, Celatoria compressa (Wulp), Celatoria bosqi Blanchard, and Celatoria setosa Coquillett (all Diptera: Tachinidae). This review improves our understanding of the realised and potential host range of these known parasitoids by rectifying erroneous references in light of new host records and from laboratory host range tests. Based on this critical review, all tachinid and braconid species studied are considered to be specific at least to the level of subtribe, i.e. Diabroticina. Celatoria setosa, Celatoria diabroticae and C. bosqi, have a narrow realized and potential host range; the former is restricted to the genus Acalymma and the last two to the fucata and virgifera groups of the genus Diabrotica. The braconids Centistes gasseni and C. diabroticae are also specific. The realized host range of C. gasseni includes species in the Diabrotica fucata and virgifera groups; while its potential host range also includes Acalymma species. The realized and potential host range of Centistes diabroticae includes Acalymma species as well as species in the fucata and virgifera groups of Diabrotica. Celatoria compressa has the broadest realised range compared to the other species studied, since it was obtained from species in several genera of Diabroticina; and its potential host range may also include Old World Aulacophora species.  相似文献

In experimental situations examining the effectiveness of p(p>1) treatments by comparing treated groups and untreated controls the following question arose: Which experimental arrangement is more appropriate, an arrangement A1 using for the p comparisons only one single control, or an arrangement A2 using for every comparison another control. To answer this question two criteria are formulated. The first criterion takes into consideration the expected numbers of type I and type II errors, and the second criterion the probabilities of type I and of type II errors. According to the first criterion A1 and A2 do not differ, generally. According to the second criterion A1 with the comparison of means of normal distributed variables is better than A2. Pooling of all p controls is better than A2 according to both criteria. A1 is better also according to the often used experimentwise type I error rate. The formulated criteria have some analogy to those of MILLER (1966). It may be possible to use them not only for comparing experimental arrangements but also tests.  相似文献
