Idotea metallica establishes self-sustaining populations exclusively on objects drifting at the sea surface. Large-scale transport of drift material with surface currents results in an efficient dispersal of the species. Two types of drifting objects are utilised (biotic and abiotic), providing quite different conditions of life. Ephemeral biotic substrata (mainly uprooted macroalgae) may be used for transport and food, however, resulting habitat destruction from feeding must be a major threat for local population persistence of I. metallica. Abiotic substrata or wood represent efficient vectors for long-distance dispersal due to their resistance to biodegradation, but do not provide food for this herbivorous species. In laboratory experiments, the spatially-limited conditions of drifting substrata were simulated in microcosms. Idotea metallica established persistent populations on both types of substrata. On abiotic substrata, however, where the animals were fed only on Artemia larvae, high variations in density and a reduced intrinsic rate of population growth increased the risk of population extinction. Idotea metallica avoids habitat destruction by limited feeding on macroalgae. In contrast, the coastally distributed congener Idotea baltica destroyed algal habitats by feeding about 10 times faster than I. metallica.  相似文献

Six species of isopods and 18 species of amphipods were collectedin the neuston of the Bay of Fundy and adjacent waters. Collectionswere made over a grid of stations covering 2.4x104 km2 duringthree spring, three summer and two autumn surveys. No isopodsand only five species of amphipods were found in spring surveys.Isopods and amphipods were diverse and plentiful in the neustonin summer and autumn. Dominant isopods were Idotea baltica andI.metallica, and dominant amphipods were Calliopius laeviusculusand Parathemisto gaudichaudi. Amphipods and isopods reach theneuston of the Bay of Fundy in three ways. Idotea metallica, the only euneustonic species present, was probably advectedinto the Bay of Fundy from southern waters in summer, and didnot appear to overwinter in the Bay. Most species, includingI.baltica, were collected with drifting littoral vegetation, and we suggest that transport by surface currents is an importantfactor in dispersal of some shoreline crustaceans. Midwaterplankton, such as Parathemisto gaudichaudi, reached the neustoneither by advection in upwelling waters or by an extension oftheir normal diel vertical distribution.  相似文献

Two general approaches have usually been taken towards understanding the distributions and dynamics of localised species in heterogeneous landscapes, namely habitat characterisation and metapopulation dynamics. We show how habitat and metapopulation dynamics interact to generate a highly localised distribution of a butterfly, despite the extremely widespread nature of the butterfly’s host plant. Egg placement, macro-habitat requirements and dispersal were studied for the butterfly Erynnis tages, in North Wales, where it shows a restricted distribution relative to that of its host plant, Lotus corniculatus. Females laid eggs disproportionately on large plants growing in hollows, with intermediate cover of bare ground and high cover of L. corniculatus. Ideal macro-habitat, studied at 100-m grid resolution, consisted of areas with high host plant densities, sheltered from wind, with light or no grazing or cutting. These specialised conditions are represented as localised patches in the landscape, and define the potential habitat network, within which metapopulation dynamics take place. Although there was a moderate (22%) level of exchange of individual E. tages among local populations, the total number of potential colonists in the whole system was low because source population sizes were small (≤200 individuals at peak in any site in 1997 and 1998). Four unoccupied but apparently suitable 500-m grid squares were colonised between 1997 and 1998, and isolated habitat was less likely to be occupied. Overall, our study suggests that long-term regional persistence of E. tages is very likely to depend on metapopulation processes within the restricted patch network, rather than on the long-term survival of local populations. We conducted the most intensive estimate of the endangered Lower Keys marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris hefneri) metapopulation to date using pellet surveys and capture–recapture methodology. We livetrapped 83 rabbits, evaluated 5 closed population models, and selected the model that best represented the data. We considered the variation in behavioral response model the best model and correlated (r2 = 0.913) its patch population estimates to patch pellet densities. From the prediction equation, we generated a range-wide metapopulation estimate of 317 rabbits, a western clade population of 257 rabbits, an eastern clade population of 25 rabbits, and translocated marsh rabbit populations of 35 and zero on Little Pine and Water keys, respectively. A subset of patches whose marsh rabbit subpopulations were last estimated in 1993 exhibited a 46% decline in abundance over 15 yr. Due to the low estimate of the eastern clade population, special effort should be initiated to avoid loss of genetic diversity. The prediction equation suffers from limited data at high pellet densities, patches with ≥5 pellets/m2. Future studies should investigate if the slope of the regression is indeed near 1 by sampling patches across the range of pellet densities, especially those with ≥5 pellets/m2. The equation provides managers a quick, efficient, and noninvasive method to estimate marsh rabbit abundance from pellet counts but the confidence of predicted rabbit densities from high pellet density patches is low. © 2011 The Wildlife Society  相似文献

Actinoptychus splendens is a conspicuous and widely distributed marine diatom. At present it is common in the coastal waters of the southern North Sea, but it appears to be absent in the older Holocene deposits along the Dutch and Belgian coasts. Its first postglacial appearance here can be dated at between 4400 and 4100 BP. By 3800 BP it is well established in the region. Although generally not abundant, it can be found in nearly every sample of younger marine or brackish deposits. The large amount of material investigated from the area, as well as the high preservation potential and easy recognition of the species, preclude any other explanation for its apparent absence along southern North Sea shores prior to ±4100 BP, than a late natural immigration. This appears to be quite exceptional, all the common species which generally occur in association with A. splendens being present from the onset of Holocene sedimentation. A. splendens may become an important marker taxon in the Holocene stratigraphy of the coastal plains along the southern North sea.  相似文献

In 1988 a long-term study was started of the isopod fauna associated with surface drift material off Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea). In the summer of 1994 specimens ofIdotea metallica Bosc were recorded for the first time. There is no evidence that this species has ever been present in the German Bight before. The samples contained males, both gravid and non-gravid females, and juveniles, indicating that the species reproduced successfully in the Helgoland region. Interbreeding of specimens from Helgoland and the western Mediterranean produced fertile off-spring. As a neustonic species,I. metallica shows a high natural capacity for dispersal. It thus seems unlikely that the arrival of the species in the North Sea resulted from an accidental introduction by man. We are probably witnessing an extension of the species’ geographical range by natural means of dispersal, as a response to recent changes in the ecological conditions of the German Bight. Temperature data measured by the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland since 1962 show that the last decade (except 1996) was characterized by unusually mild winters. Following the severe winter of 1996,I. metallica was again absent from the Helgoland region. After the subsequent mild winters (1997 and 1998), however, the species reappeared in the summer of 1998 with higher numbers than ever before. This suggests that the observed phenomena are closely connected with the recent temperature anomalies.I. metallica can be regarded as a potential immigrant to a warmer North Sea, and may be useful as a sensitive indicator of the predicted long-term warming trend.  相似文献

The variability of the Gmo3, Gmo34, Gmo35, and Pgmo32 DNA microsatellite loci in Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus samples from different areas of the North Pacific was analyzed. The data obtained show that Pacific cod from the southern Kuril Islands significantly differs from the populations of the Bering Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the coastal waters of Canada (the microsatellite loci Gmo3 and Pgmo32 bear the highest differentiating capacity). Despite the significant geographical remoteness of these areas from one another, the above three Pacific cod populations exhibit a high degree of similarity (I = 0.997–0.999).  相似文献

Despite almost a hundred years of studies on the Pacific cod’s biological and ecological peculiarities, many of them and especially population structure remain poorly understood. The variability of DNA microsatellite loci Gmo3, Gmo34, Gmo35, Pgmo32, and Gmo 19 was analyzed for the cod sampled in different areas of the North Pacific. The cod sampled nearby the Southern Kurils, differed significantly by Gmo3 and Pgmo32 compared to the populations inhabiting the Bering Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk and the coastal waters off Canada. Further, Pacific cod of the three latter populations demonstrated high similarity (I = 0.996) in spite of considerable geographic remoteness of these areas from one another.  相似文献

Tidal influences on appendicularian densities were observedat North Inlet, South Carolina, by sampling along a transectwhich ran from a tidal creek to a station 5 km offshore. Oikopleuradioica was the dominant species in North Inlet, while Oikopleuralongicauda and Appendicularia sicula contributed marginallyto appendicularian numbers during midsummer and fall. A strongtide-dependent density pattern was clear for inshore waters.Low-tide densities of all three species showed a dramatic increasein an offshore direction. At high tide, densities were similarbetween all stations for O. dioica, while O. longicauda andA. sicula showed a less pronounced density gradient than atlow tide. Population densities within the inlet were greateron spring tides than neap tides and tidal influences were generallyconsistent between seasons. Appendicularians enter the estuaryin densities as high as 20 072 animals m–3, indicatingthat tidal currents may be an important mechanism for exchangeof appendicularian biomass between coastal and estuarine waters. 1Present address: Allan Hancock Foundation, University of SouthernCalifornia, Los Angeles, CA 90007, USA.  相似文献

A persistent patch of high biomass water, associated with the Juan de Fuca Eddy, is often observed in surface chlorophyll a images off the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. Outbreaks of toxic Pseudo-nitzschia spp. along the Washington, USA, coast are believed to correlate with the transport of waters from Juan de Fuca Eddy southward to Washington beaches. A time series of Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) satellite ocean color images from late May 1999 of coastal waters off Washington and Vancouver Island, processed for surface chlorophyll a concentration and spectral remote sensing reflectance, captured a transport event where water from the Juan de Fuca Eddy was transported onto the Washington shelf. Strong upwelling-favorable winds appeared to deform the patch over an 8-day period and move it southward into Washington coastal waters with surface velocities of approximately 8–16 km d−1. SeaWiFS and sea surface temperature imagery showed the local phytoplankton response to wind-driven coastal upwelling restricted to a narrow (10–15 km) region along the Washington coast. Although we did not observe transport of high biomass water originating in the Juan de Fuca Eddy to Washington beaches in May 1999, transport of Pseudo-nitzschia cells could occur following a rapid shift to downwelling-favorable conditions. Tracking the trajectory of surface waters from the Juan de Fuca Eddy by remote sensing could be used to trigger conditional sampling for domoic acid along the Washington coast.  相似文献

On northeastern Pacific coasts, Ulvaria obscura is a dominant component of subtidal “green tide” blooms, which can be harmful to marine communities, fisheries, and aquaculture facilities. U. obscura is avoided by herbivores relative to many other locally common macrophytes, which may contribute to its ability to form persistent blooms. We used a bioassay-guided fractionation method to experimentally determine the cause of reduced feeding on Ulvaria by echinoderms, molluscs, and arthropods. Our results indicated that dopamine, which constituted an average of 4.4% of the alga’s dry mass, was responsible for decreased feeding by sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis). Subsequent experiments demonstrated that dopamine also reduced the feeding rates of snails (Littorina sitkana) and isopods (Idotea wosnesenskii). Dopamine is a catecholamine that is a common neurotransmitter in animals. The catecholamines dopamine, epinephrine (adrenaline), and norepinephrine also occur in at least 44 families of higher plants. The functions of catecholamines in plants are less well known than in animals but are likely to be diverse and include both physiological and ecological roles. Our results are the first experimental demonstration of a plant or algal catecholamine functioning as a feeding deterrent. This novel use of dopamine by Ulvaria may contribute to the formation and persistence of harmful Ulvaria blooms in northeastern Pacific coastal waters.  相似文献

We present data from a long time-series study to describe the factors that control phytoplankton population densities and biomass in the coastal waters of Oman. Surface temperature, salinity, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a (Chl a), and phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance of sea water were measured as far as possible from February 2004 through February 2006, at two stations along the southern coast of the Gulf of Oman. The highest concentrations of Chl a (3 mg m−3) were recorded during the southwest monsoon (SWM) when upwelling is active along the coast of Oman. However, results from our study reveal that the timing and the amplitude of the seasonal peak of Chl a exhibited interannual variability, which might be attributed to interannual differences in the seasonal cycles of nutrients caused either by coastal upwelling or by cyclonic eddy activity. Monthly variability of SST and concentrations of dissolved nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and silicate together explained about 90% of the seasonal changes of Chl a in the coastal ecosystem of the Gulf of Oman. Phytoplankton communities of the coastal waters of Oman were dominated by diatoms for most part of the year, but for a short period in summer, dinoflagellates were dominant.  相似文献

Recent studies on butterflies emphasize habitat characteristics together with metapopulation parameters (patch area and isolation) giving a more thorough understanding of processes influencing population persistence and patch occupancy, than either of them alone. We studied a coastal and an archipelago population of the Apollo butterfly (Parnassius apollo) in SW Finland. Larvae were surveyed for four years in both populations. Counting larvae on three consecutive days and temporarily removing them tested the survey accuracy. The removals showed four times higher larval abundance in the archipelago than on the coast. Survey methods were reliable, provided that empty patch status was not based on single visits only, if larval abundance was low. On the coast, large patches, and patches with high host-plant abundance were often occupied. In the archipelago, patches rich in host-plant were often occupied whereas patch area did not affect patch occupancy. In both populations, the probability of patches being occupied for three consecutive years increased with increasing host-plant abundance and patch area. Conservation of P. apollo depends on securing host-plant abundance on large enough patches in both study systems. In these systems, even crude habitat measures prove useful for understanding ecological processes behind observed patterns.  相似文献

Rapidly increasing fragmentation of natural landscapes decreases the ability of many species to reach the smaller and more isolated patches of habitat in a metapopulation. The densities of local populations of several moth species and the butterfly Hipparchia semele in a network of small islands, and the rates of inter-island movement and movement patterns, were investigated, to determine the factors affecting the rate and pattern of movements. The estimated population densities ranged from 0.001 to 0.2 individuals/m2. The observed emigration and immigration rates depended on island isolation and various traits of the species, with great variability in migration rates among species. Thin-bodied, slow-flying species did not move among the islands, whereas many robust, fast-flying species moved among the islands relatively frequently. Migration rate increased significantly with body size and was significantly higher in oligophagous than in polyphagous species, suggesting that these factors are important determinants of the migration rate of the species. Migration rate was low when the surface temperature of the sea was low, and a greater proportion of individuals emigrated from small than large patches of habitat. The migration distances of female noctuids were shorter than those of males and those of both sexes of the butterfly H. semele. The observed movement patterns are consistent with a metapopulation structure in most of the moth species.  相似文献

In the Baltic Sea, abiotic factors are often supposed to explain the distribution of the key species Fucus vesiculosus. Still, in many areas, decline of F. vesiculosus has coincided with mass occurrence of the herbivorous isopod Idotea baltica. The aim of this work was to examine whether, how and at what densities I. baltica can affect the distribution of F. vesiculosus in the central Baltic proper. Both large-scale field surveys and a two-week grazing experiment have been performed. In the field survey there was a correlation between density of I. baltica and reduction in depth penetration of F. vesiculosus. At 80 animals per 100 g F. vesiculosus wet weight, the depth penetration of the F. vesiculosus belt was reduced by 2.5 m within a year. In the grazing experiment there was a correlation between density of I. baltica and loss of F. vesiculosus biomass and meristems. In the controls biomass and number of meristems increased by 50%, while at 20 animals per 100 g of F. vesiculosus there was no net growth of F. vesiculosus. Intensity of grazing did not differ between isopod densities of 20, 40 and 60/100 g. At isopod densities of 80 and 100/100 g though, biomass and meristems decreased by 50%, indicating a threshold for the survival of F. vesiculosus in the experiment. At all densities the isopods preferred younger tissue to older. Our results indicate that grazing by Idotea baltica is an important structuring factor in the Baltic Fucus vesiculosus populations.  相似文献

A recently described symbiosis between the metabolically streamlined nitrogen‐fixing cyanobacterium UCYN‐A and a single‐celled eukaryote prymnesiophyte alga is widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical marine waters, and is thought to contribute significantly to nitrogen fixation in these regions. Several UCYN‐A sublineages have been defined based on UCYN‐A nitrogenase (nifH) sequences. Due to the low abundances of UCYN‐A in the global oceans, currently existing molecular techniques are limited for detecting and quantifying these organisms. A targeted approach is needed to adequately characterize the diversity of this important marine cyanobacterium, and to advance understanding of its ecological importance. We present findings on the distribution of UCYN‐A sublineages based on high throughput sequencing of UCYN‐A nifH PCR amplicons from 78 samples distributed throughout many major oceanic provinces. These UCYN‐A nifH fragments were used to define oligotypes, alternative taxonomic units defined by nucleotide positions with high variability. The data set was dominated by a single oligotype associated with the UCYN‐A1 sublineage, consistent with previous observations of relatively high abundances in tropical and subtropical regions. However, this analysis also revealed for the first time the widespread distribution of the UCYN‐A3 sublineage in oligotrophic waters. Furthermore, distinct assemblages of UCYN‐A oligotypes were found in oligotrophic and coastally influenced waters. This unique data set provides a framework for determining the environmental controls on UCYN‐A distributions and the ecological importance of the different sublineages.  相似文献

Recent molecular studies have shown that highly mobile species with continuous distributions can exhibit fine‐scale population structure. In this context, we assessed genetic structure within a marine species with high dispersal potential, the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis). Using 19 microsatellite loci and mitochondrial control region sequences, population structure was investigated in the western North Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico and the Azores Islands. Analyses of the microsatellite data identified four distinct genetic clusters, which were supported by the control region sequences. The highest level of divergence was seen between two clusters corresponding to previously described morphotypes that inhabit oceanic and shelf waters. The combined morphological and genetic evidence suggests these two lineages are on distinct evolutionary trajectories and could be considered distinct subspecies despite their parapatry. Further analysis of the continental shelf cluster resulted in three groups: animals inhabiting shelf waters in the western North Atlantic, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the western Gulf of Mexico. Analyses of environmental data indicate the four genetic clusters inhabit distinct habitats in terms of depth and sea surface temperature. Contemporary dispersal rate estimates suggest all of these populations should be considered as distinct management units. Conversely, no significant genetic differentiation was observed between S. frontalis from offshore waters of the western North Atlantic and the Azores, which are separated by approximately 4500 km. Overall, the hierarchical structure observed within the Atlantic spotted dolphin shows that the biogeography of the species is complex because it is not shaped solely by geographic distance.  相似文献

The scarce heath (Coenonympha hero) is an internationally threatened butterfly in Western Europe, where it occurs primarily on hay fields and abandoned arable land in a small-scale agricultural landscape of south-central Scandinavia. Due to afforestation, this habitat is becoming increasingly fragmented in Sweden, and it can be expected that the scarce heath will decline abruptly when threshold conditions for metapopulation persistence are no longer met. We used stepwise polychotomous logistic regression to compare habitat characteristics and isolation measures for patches that harbour large, small or no populations, respectively, in an area of south-western Sweden. We found that patch area, distance to the nearest large population and amount of Galium spp. explained a significant part of the variation in relative abundance among patches. Distance to nearest large population resulted in a better model to predict occupancy than both distance to the nearest inhabited patch and connectivity, which suggests that primarily large populations act as sources for small satellite populations. Today, sites of three of the eight larger populations in the study area have been planted with spruce or pine and will disappear within 20 years. We argue that the disappearance of these patches may very well lead to rapid extinction of the whole metapopulation system.  相似文献

Plant reproductive success is usually positively related to conspecific floral density, but neutral or negative effects of floral density on reproduction have also been reported. Differences in the relationship between reproduction and floral density largely originate from a trade‐off between increasing attractiveness versus increasing competition for pollinators at high floral densities. Although floral densities strongly vary in the understory of tropical forests, for instance, due to variation in light availability, little is known about the density dependence of reproduction in tropical understory plants. We used path analyses to disentangle direct and indirect effects of canopy openness and floral density on fruit set and analyzed the relationship between pollen load and floral density for two Neotropical understory plants, Heliconia metallica and Besleria melancholica. In both species, fruit set was not directly related to canopy openness, but decreased with increasing floral density. In H. metallica, canopy openness had an indirect negative effect on reproduction mediated by its effects on floral density. Effects of floral density on pollen loads were species‐specific. In B. melancholica, pollen loads linearly decreased with increasing floral density, indicating competition for pollinators at high densities. In H. metallica, pollen loads were reduced at both low and high densities, indicating an interplay of facilitative and competitive effects of floral density on pollen deposition. In contrast to other studies, we found negative density dependence of reproduction in both understory species. Negative effects of floral density on reproduction appear to be related to pollinator‐mediated effects on reproduction rather than to variation in abiotic conditions.  相似文献

The marine environment provides an opportunity to examine population structure in species with high dispersal capabilities and often no obvious barriers to genetic exchange. In coastal waters of the western North Atlantic, common bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, are a highly mobile species with a continuous distribution from New York to Florida. We examine if the highly mobile nature coupled with no obvious geographic barriers to movement in this region result in a large panmictic population. Mitochondrial control region sequences and 18 microsatellite loci indicate dolphins are partitioning the habitat both latitudinally and longitudinally. A minimum of five genetically differentiated populations were identified among 404 samples collected in the range of New Jersey to northern Florida using both genetic marker types, some inhabiting nearshore coastal waters and others utilizing inshore estuarine waters. The genetic results reject the hypothesis of a single stock of coastal bottlenose dolphins put forth after the 1987–1988 epizootic that caused a large‐scale die‐off of dolphins and suggest instead the disease vector was transferred from one population to the next as a result of seasonal migratory movements of some populations. These coastal Atlantic populations also differ significantly from bottlenose dolphin samples collected in coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico, implying a long‐term barrier to movement between the two basins.  相似文献
