We describe responses of seven mothers and other troop members to dead and dying infants in several troops of ring-tailed lemurs(Lemur catta) at the Berenty Reserve, Madagascar. In contrast to mothers in simian species, ring-tailed lemur mothers rarely carried their dying, immobile or dead infants. However, they sniffed, licked, and touched them even after they had died. While the dying infants were still peeping, their mothers remained near them, and 15 to 76 min after the infants ceased to peep, they were left by their mothers. Six of the seven mothers returned to their dead infants several times within the first few hours after they had left them. All seven mothers gave repeated calls, such as “mew” and “pyaa,” when they were separated from either their dead infants or other troop members or both. Thus, each mother exhibited some form of maternal behavior toward her dead infant for hours after its death. These results indicate that there may not be a great gap in terms of maternal affection between simian and prosimian mothers. We also discuss visuospatial memory ability in ring-tailed lemurs and the causes of the infants’ deaths.  相似文献

The underwater behaviour of 11 belugas or white whales was examined during summer using time-at-depth records relayed by satellite-linked data-loggers. Simultaneous tracking information was obtained for each whale. Eight distinct dive profiles were identified in submergences made to depths of >40 m. Four of these, together comprising 84% of these “deep” dives, were of a square profile. They were characterised by a continuous descent to a particular depth (usually the sea bed), a “bottom phase” at or near that depth, and a direct ascent to the surface. These dives are presumed to be made for benthic foraging. Other, much less common, dive shapes were “V”-shaped, parabolic and trapezoidal. “Shallow” dives (15–40 m depth) were of a variety of shapes, short duration and high average horizontal speeds. Many probably occurred during periods of directed travel. This population of belugas treats most of the water column as dead space separating resources of oxygen and nutrition. We performed multiple-breath N2 washouts (MBNW) with tidal volumes of 1 liter at 8-16 breaths/min and constant flow rates in six normal subjects. For each breath we computed the slope of the alveolar plateau, normalized by the mean expired N2 concentration (Sn), the Bohr dead space (VDB), an index analogous to the Fowler dead space (V50), and the normalized slope of phase II (S2). In four subjects helium (He) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) were washed out after equilibration with a 5% gas mixture of each tracer. The Sn for He and SF6 increased in consecutive breaths, but the difference (delta Sn) increased only over the first five breaths, remaining constant thereafter. In all six subjects Sn, VDB, and V50 increased progressively in consecutive breaths of the MBNW, the increase in Sn being the greatest, approximately 290% from the first to the 23-25th breath. In contrast, S2 was unchanged initially and decreased after the sixth breath. The results indicate that after the fifth breath the increase in Sn during a MBNW is diffusion independent and may constitute a sensitive index of convection-dependent inhomogeneity (CDI). Subtraction of this component from the first breath suggests that Sn in a single-breath washout is largely due to a diffusion-dependent mechanism. The latter may reflect an interaction of convection and diffusion within the lung periphery, whereas CDI may comprise ventilation inequality among larger units, subtended by more centrally located branch points.  相似文献

A compartmental lung model with any number of synchronously filling and emptying functional chambers and a common dead space or conducting region is considered. It is shown that the model gives rise to an output, in an open circuit washout determination, which is a weighted sum of exponentials. From estimates of these weights and exponential components, estimates of the model parameters can be recovered. Relations giving the unique correspondence between the output parameters and the model parameters are derived and the existence and uniqueness of solutions established.  相似文献

Changes have been studied in space and time in the proportion of dead individuals in the zooplankton of the Curonian Lagoon. Dead individuals were found in the populations of all dominant invertebrate species. Their proportion was shown to increase during “hyperbloom” by a factor of 5 to 6. In the vegetation period without algal hyperbloom (2007), the dead individuals accounted on average for 1.9 ± 0.7% of the total abundance and 1.7 ± 0.8% of the total biomass of zooplankton; in the vegetation period with hyperbloom (2008), their proportion increased to 6.7 ± 3.0% and 5.9 ± 2.5%, respectively. Differences in sensitivity to bloom of Cianobacteria have been revealed in hydrobionts from different groups. Cladocera and nauplial Copepoda are the most sensitive groups; Cyclopoida is the least sensitive. The highest proportion of dead individuals was recorded in the most eutophicated and polluted part of the lagoon. It is suggested that parameters of zooplankton mortality be used for estimating the ecological state of the Curonian Lagoon.  相似文献

Random graph theory is used to model and analyse the relationship between sequences and secondary structures of RNA molecules, which are understood as mappings from sequence space into shape space. These maps are non-invertible since there are always many orders of magnitude more sequences than structures. Sequences folding into identical structures formneutral networks. A neutral network is embedded in the set of sequences that arecompatible with the given structure. Networks are modeled as graphs and constructed by random choice of vertices from the space of compatible sequences. The theory characterizes neutral networks by the mean fraction of neutral neighbors (λ). The networks are connected and percolate sequence space if the fraction of neutral nearest neighbors exceeds a threshold value (λ>λ*). Below threshold (λ<λ*), the networks are partitioned into a largest “giant” component and several smaller components. Structure are classified as “common” or “rare” according to the sizes of their pre-images, i.e. according to the fractions of sequences folding into them. The neutral networks of any pair of two different common structures almost touch each other, and, as expressed by the conjecture ofshape space covering sequences folding into almost all common structures, can be found in a small ball of an arbitrary location in sequence space. The results from random graph theory are compared to data obtained by folding large samples of RNA sequences. Differences are explained in terms of specific features of RNA molecular structures. Exploring the relationships between landscape pattern and ecological processes is the key topic of landscape ecology, for which, a large number of indices as well as landscape pattern analysis model were developed. However, one problem faced by landscape ecologists is that it is hard to link the landscape indices with a specific ecological process. Linking landscape pattern and ecological processes has become a challenge for landscape ecologists. “Source” and “sink” are common concepts used in air pollution research, by which the movement direction and pattern of different pollutants in air can be clearly identified. In fact, for any ecological process, the research can be considered as a balance between the source and the sink in space. Thus, the concepts of “source” and “sink” could be implemented to the research of landscape pattern and ecological processes. In this paper, a theory of sourcesink landscape was proposed, which include: (1) In the research of landscape pattern and ecological process, all landscape types can be divided into two groups, “source” landscape and “sink” landscape. “Source” landscape contributes positively to the ecological process, while “sink” landscape is unhelpful to the ecological process. (2) Both landscapes are recognized with regard to the specific ecological process. “Source” landscape in a target ecological process may change into a “sink” landscape as in another ecological process. Therefore, the ecological process should be determined before “source” or “sink” landscape were defined. (3) The key point to distinguish “source” landscape from “sink” landscape is to quantify the effect of landscape on ecological process. The positive effect is made by “source” landscape, and the negative effect by “sink” landscape. (4) For the same ecological process, the contribution of “source” landscapes may vary, and it is the same to the “sink” landscapes. It is required to determine the weight of each landscape type on ecological processes. (5) The sourcesink principle can be applied to non-point source pollution control, biologic diversity protection, urban heat island effect mitigation, etc. However, the landscape evaluation models need to be calibrated respectively, because different ecological processes correspond with different source-sink landscapes and evaluation models for the different study areas. Transient solutions are developed for the buildup of a concentration gradient in the single loop solute cycling model of the renal medulla. The “pump” from ascending limb to descending limb is considered in both unsaturated and completely saturated modes of operation. Both analytic solutions and semianalytic solutions obtained from inverting Laplace transforms are considered. The classic representation of concentration buildup by the multiplication process is compared with calculated profiles. The “single effect” is found to vary both in time and space.  相似文献

Aluminium concentration was analyzed in roots, stems and leaves of species growing in morichals with extreme flooded acid soils, deficient in K, Ca, Mg and P. Mean aluminium saturation was 73%. Results seem to indicate that species depending on seasonal changes in the Al concentration of plant compartments, could be grouped into “perennial aluminium accumulators”, “late aluminium accumulators” and “threshold aluminium accumulators”.  相似文献

The major objective of this study was to establish standard glucose and lactose tolerance curves for the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). These data were utilized to establish criteria for detection of abnormal glucose tolerance and characterization of some aspects of the “marmoset wasting syndrome” which has been observed in this species. Glucose and lactose tolerance tests were performed on healthy animals and typical “marmoset wasters.” Eighteen normal animals were 18 to 36 months old and weighed 194–280 g. Six “wasters” were in the age range of 24 to 84 months and weighed 163–253 g. Seven experiments were carried out for each glucose tolerance test. In each trial it was observed that the serum glucose concentration (SGC) of the healthy animal after 90 min was two times higher than the pre-administration concentrations. The SGC returned to the pre-administration concentration within 150–300 min in animals administered glucose at dosages of 2 g/kg and 1 g/kg of body weight. However, at the dosage level of 5 g/kg body weight, the SGC of the animals tripled after 30 min and required 300 min to return to the pre-administration level. The 2 g/kg dosage level was chosen as typical. When similar experiments were conducted with animals identified as “chronic wasters,” all of the animals except one were observed to be inefficient in the absorption of glucose. When lactose was administered at a level of 4 g/kg, similar results were obtained. Normal and “waster” marmosets were also subjected to serum total protein, albumin and electrophoresis determinations in an effort to establish additional criteria that may be utilized in the identification of the “marmoset wasting” syndrome. Serum albumin was significantly higher in the “waster” marmosets 30 min following an oral administration of glucose than was observed in normal animals. Total protein values were not significantly lower in the “wasters” when subjected to the same tolerance test. The albumin level in normal animals was not affected by similar glucose tolerance tests. The electrophoretic patterns of serum protein for normal animals exhibited more bands than was observed in patterns of serum protein for “waster” marmosets. From these data, it seems logical that these diagnostic tests may be useful in developing a profile for the early detection of the “wasting” syndrome in marmosets.  相似文献

The effects (and interaction) of two solution concentrations of Mg (50, 500, μM) and two of K (250, 4250 μM) on the growth of micropropagated plants of “F. 12/1” and “Colt” were investigated using a flowing solution culture system. Magnesium inflow and growth of “Colt” and “F. 12/1” were inhibited to a similar extent by an increased concentration of K in the nutrient solution. However, the consequences of this inhibition were different. Reduced inflow of Mg in “F. 12/1” caused Mg deficiency symptoms at high and low concentrations of K, whereas this only occurred with a combination of high K concentration and low Mg concentration in “Colt”. The distribution of dry matter within the plant was significant in determining susceptibility to Mg deficiency. Since “F. 12/1” has a smaller root:shoot ratio than Colt it is unable to sustain the same concentration of Mg in leaves as “Colt” irrespective of external K concentration. The molar ratio of K:Mg in soil solutions should remain <8.5:1 in order to ensure maximum growth of “F. 12/1” and “Colt”. In view of the increasing evidence that multicomponent diffusion effects could be significant in biological gas exchange systems, a non-equimolar film model of multicomponent diffusion was derived. “Osmotic” ternary diffusion was studied for the gas systems He−N2−O2, He−SF6−O2, and N2−SF6−O2. Diffusional fluxes and concentration profiles were calculated under both the “square-root” and the “product” flux conditions. Results were also compared with those obtained using the equimolar flux condition. It was found that the greater the difference of the diffusibilities between the two active components in a system, the greater the osmotic fluxes, and also the more alinear the concentration profiles. These results support the suggestion that the “product” condition applies to molecular diffusion in free space, the “square-root” condition to molecular diffusion in pores, and the equimolar flux condition to closed diffusion systems.  相似文献

We examined the influence of three variables (different breathing circuits, breath selected for analysis, and alveolar dead space ventilation) on the accuracy of noninvasive cardiac output determinations with the Fick CO2 (indirect) equation. We compared noninvasive determinations with invasive thermodilution measurements over a wide range of cardiac outputs in 17 2-mo-old pigs anesthetized with halothane and nitrous oxide and paralyzed with either pancuronium or d-tubocurare. We found that rebreathing and nonrebreathing circuits provide accurate cardiac output determinations and that the optimal breath for analysis with either the rebreathing or nonrebreathing technique appears to depend on the cardiac output. When alveolar dead space was increased by using positional changes and the intracardiac administration of glass beads, there was still a good correlation between noninvasive and invasive cardiac output determinations. We conclude that both rebreathing and nonrebreathing techniques of indirect Fick cardiac output determinations correlate well with thermodilution measures over a wide range of cardiac outputs and alveolar dead space/tidal volume fractions.  相似文献

Tidal volumes used in high-frequency ventilation (HFV) may be smaller than anatomic dead space, but since gas exchange does take place, physiological dead space (VD) must be smaller than tidal volume (VT). We quantified changes in VD in three dogs at constant alveolar ventilation using the Bohr equation as VT was varied from 3 to 15 ml/kg and frequency (f) from 0.2 to 8 Hz, ranges that include normal as well as HFV. We found that VD was relatively constant at tidal volumes associated with normal ventilation (7-15 ml/kg) but fell sharply as VT was reduced further to tidal volumes associated with HFV (less than 7 ml/kg). The frequency required to maintain constant alveolar ventilation increased slowly as tidal volume was decreased from 15 to 7 ml/kg but rose sharply with attendant rapid increases in minute ventilation as tidal volumes were decreased to less than 7 ml/kg. At tidal volumes less than 7 ml/kg, the data deviated substantially from the conventional alveolar ventilation equation [f(VT - VD) = constant] but fit well a model derived previously for HFV. This model predicts that gas exchange with volumes smaller than dead space should vary approximately as the product of f and VT2.  相似文献

The respiratory system is described as a control system. The controller consists of the peripheral and central chemoreceptors, the respiratory centre in the medulla oblongata and the controlling signal “alveolar ventilation”. The controlled system comprise three compartments (lung, brain, tissue) connected by the circulating blood. The controlled values of the system are explicit the arterial O2-pressure and the CO2-pressure of the brain-compartment. Hypoxia, hyperoxia and hypercapnia are the disturbing signals, which are caused by changing concentrations in the inspired gas. In this research both dynamic and steady-state behavior are studied. The steady-state and transient data of the model generally approach the findings of the experiments. The analysis of the efficiency of the regulation states the quality of the control system. In the on-and off-transients the CO2-fractions of the alveolar gas, and in the off-transient the alveolar ventilation deviate from the experimental results in hypercapnic disturbances. Reasons for these differences and others existing between simulation and experiment are discussed.

This article briefly reviews environmental history in the “Sister Cities” of Wuhan, China and Pittsburgh, USA. Specifically, it analyzes key changes in air, water, land, and sustainability in each of the two cities in terms of both “driving forces” and of the actions of key stakeholders (policymakers, educators, industry/business, nongovernmental organizations [NGOs], and the public). It concludes by discussing prospects for synergies between the two cities in continuing to improve environmental health, and the implications of these ideas for other cities in both the “developing” and the “developed” world.  相似文献

Two mathematical models of pulmonary single breath gas washout (one analytic, one numerical) are developed and their predictions compared with experimental data on human subjects. Weibel's 23 generation symmetric anatomical model is used as a guide to bronchial tree geometry. Experimental plots of nitrogen concentration versus volume expired, dead space versus breath holding time, and dead space versus tidal volume are compared with plots predicted by the models. Agreement is good. A plot of nitrogen concentration in the airways as predicted by the numerical model at different times during inhalation and exhalation of a single breath of oxygen is shown. Model predictions for changes in dead space with changes in washout gas and expiratory flow rate are discussed. Use of the analytic model for obtaining average values of the path length from mouth to alveoli in a given subject is discussed. To the extent of their agreement with experiment, the models provide a sound physical basis for the correlation of airway structure and function.  相似文献

A mathematical theory applicable to the biological effects of radiations as chain processes is developed. The theory may be interpreted substantially as a “hit theory” involving the concepts of “sensitive volume” or “target area”. The variability of the sensitivity of the organism to the radiation and its capacity of recovery between single hits is taken into account. It is shown that in a continuous irradiation of a biological aggregate in which the effect of each single hit cannot be observed, recovery and variation of sensitivity are formally equivalent to each other so that a discrimination between these two phenomena is possible only by discontinuous irradiation or by using different radiation intensities. Methods for the calculation of the “number of hits” and for the determination of the kinetics of the processes from “survival curves” or similar experimental data are given. The relation between the recovery and the Bunsen-Roscoe law is discussed. The case in which the injury of the organism is dependent on the destruction of more than one “sensitive volume” is also considered.  相似文献

We report a phylogenetic analysis of “core” Malvales (Tiliaceae, Sterculiaceae, Bombacaceae, and Malvaceae) based on morphological, anatomical, palynological, and chemical features. The results of the analyses lead to the conclusion that Tiliaceae, Sterculiaceae, and Bombacaceae, as variously delimited, are paraphyletic; only the Malvaceae are likely monophyletic. The genera of “core” Malvales form a well-defined clade. Genera of “Tiliaceae” constitute the basal complex within “core” Malvales. The “Sterculiaceae” (most genera)+ “Bombacaceae” + Malvaceae form a clade on the basis of a monadelphous androecium; “Bombacaceae”+ Malvaceae also form a clade, which is diagnosable on the basis of monoloculate anthers. It is clear that the traditional classification, with its arbitrarily delimited evolutionary grades, is unsatisfactory, especially if one seeks to reflect phylogeny accurately. Thus, Malvaceae is redefined to refer to the most recent common ancestor of plants previously considered to be “Tiliaceae,” “Sterculiaceae,” “Bombacaceae,” and Malvaceae, and all of the descendants of that ancestor. This broadly circumscribed Malvaceae can be diagnosed by several presumed synapomorphies, but we draw special attention to the unusual floral nectaries that are composed of densely packed, multicellular, glandular hairs on the sepals (or less commonly on the petals or androgynophore).  相似文献

“Bulk density” and “dry-matter content” are useful indices of dry-matter accumulation in plant organs. A theoretical equation describing the relationship between these two indices was put forward. To examine the reliability of this equation, the seasonal changes of these two indices were investigated in the leaves and stems of different ages ofAucuba japonica. In each organ both indices varied seasonally almost parallel to each other, but the seasonal changes of dry-matter content were less obvious than those of bulk density. The observed bulk density was always larger than that calculated from the observed dry-matter content by the theoretical equation. A drying experiment showed that this discrepancy was caused by the decrement of the volume of the plant material by water loss during the period from the weight measurement to the volume measurement. When the water loss was negligible, the equation described well the relationships between the two indices of the experimental materials. It was also shown that this equation was useful for the estimation of the amount of air space in plant materials.  相似文献
