There are two alternative hypotheses related to body size and competition for restricted food sources. The first one supposes that larger animals are superior competitors because of their increased feeding abilities, whereas the second one assumes superiority of smaller animals because of their lower food requirements. We examined the relationship between two unrelated species of different size, drinking technique, energy requirements and roles in plant pollination system, to reveal the features of their competitive interaction and mechanisms enabling their co-existence while utilising the same nectar source. We observed diurnal feeding behaviour of the main pollinator, the carpenter bee Xylocopa caffra and a nectar thief, the northern double-collared sunbird Cinnyris reichenowi on 19 clumps of Hypoestes aristata (Acanthaceae) in Bamenda Highlands, Cameroon. For comparative purpose, we established a simplistic model of daily energy expenditure and daily energy intake by both visitor species assuming that they spend all available daytime feeding on H. aristata. We revealed the energetic gain–expenditure balance of the studied visitor species in relation to diurnal changes in nectar quality and quantity. In general, smaller energy requirements and related ability to utilise smaller resources made the main pollinator X. caffra competitively superior to the larger nectar thief C. reichenowi. Nevertheless, sunbirds are endowed with several mechanisms to reduce asymmetry in exploitative competition, such as the use of nectar resources in times of the day when rivals are inactive, aggressive attacks on carpenter bees while defending the nectar plants, and higher speed of nectar consumption.  相似文献

Artibeus jamaicensis is a medium-sized frugivorous microchiropteran bat that complements its diet with nectar and pollen during the dry season. We investigated which species of pollen are carried by A. jamaicensis in order to determine its potential role as a plant pollinator in the northern Yucatan Peninsula. We collected pollen from the fur of 192 individuals throughout the year from April 2004 to March 2005. We recorded pollen from nine plant species of eight families and found five unidentified pollen types, with the highest pollen species richness recorded in June. A. jamaicensis moved pollen of Erythrina standleyana and Mimosa bahamensis, which have not hitherto been reported as visited by this species. The most abundant pollen in the samples was found to be that of three tree species: Ceiba pentandra, C. aesculifolia and Lysiloma latisiliquum. Very few samples contained pollen in the rainy season, when the bats fed mainly on fruits. A. jamaicensis can fly several kilometres among foraging locations and dispersed large amounts of pollen from tree species growing near cenotes as well as those not present at cenotes but occurring in other forest fragments, highlighting its importance as a pollen vector among forest fragments in the largely deforested landscape of the Yucatan Peninsula, helping to reduce the negative effects of forest fragmentation. Ceiba appears to benefit from the role of A. jamaicensis as a pollen vector, and the species play an important ecological role in the Yucatán landscape, supplying shade, nectar and fruit for wildlife.  相似文献

Members of Oncidiinae are widely known for their interactions with oil-collecting bees that explore lipophilic secretions on flowers. They may also be pollinated through food deception and the offering of nectar. Although data on breeding systems are available for many Oncidiinae orchids, little is known about the reproductive strategies in Rodriguezia, a neotropical genus of ca. 55 species. In this paper, we explore the reproductive biology of two species of Rodriguezia with distinctive morphologies: R. decora and R. lanceolata. Floral features, spectral reflectance, pollinators and pollination mechanisms, and breeding systems were studied. Both species are scentless and produce nectar as a reward. Floral nectar is secreted by a gland at the base of the labellum and stored into the sepaline spur. Rodriguezia decora reflects mainly in the blue and red regions of the light spectrum, while R. lanceolata reflects in the red region. Rodriguezia decora is exclusively visited and pollinated by butterflies, while Trochilidae hummingbirds are the pollinators of R. lanceolata. Pollinaria attach to the upper third of the proboscis of butterflies (R. decora), and to the bill of hummingbirds (R. lanceolata), during the collection of nectar from the spur. Both Rodriguezia species are self-sterile. Flower features and floral reflectance support the occurrence of psychophily in R. decora and ornithophily in R. lanceolata.  相似文献

In Utricularia, the flower spur is a nectary and in this organ, nectar is produced and stored. This study aimed to examine the structure of the nectary trichomes in four Utricularia species (Utricularia vulgaris L., U. australis R.Br., U. bremii Heer and U. foliosa L.) from the generic section Utricularia. We have investigated whether species with different spur morphology had similar spur anatomy and nectary trichome structure. In Utricularia flowers, nectar is produced by spur capitate trichomes (sessile or stalked). Our results showed that regardless of the various spur morphology, trichomes have similar architecture and ultrastructure. Head cells of these trichomes are transfer cells with an eccrine nectar secretion. Examined species differed in the micromorphology of papillae in spurs. The fly Eristalis tenax was found to be a pollinator of U. vulgaris. Small Halictidae bees seem to be pollinators of U. foliosa.  相似文献

One way the public can engage in insect conservation is through wildlife gardening, including the growing of insect-friendly flowers as sources of nectar. However, plant varieties differ in the types of insects they attract. To determine which garden plants attracted which butterflies, we counted butterflies nectaring on 11 varieties of summer-flowering garden plants in a rural garden in East Sussex, UK. These plants were all from a list of 100 varieties considered attractive to British butterflies, and included the five varieties specifically listed by the UK charity Butterfly Conservation as best for summer nectar. A total of 2659 flower visits from 14 butterfly and one moth species were observed. We performed a principal components analysis which showed contrasting patterns between the species attracted to Origanum vulgare and Buddleia davidii. The “butterfly bush” Buddleia attracted many nymphalines, such as the peacock, Inachis io, but very few satyrines such as the gatekeeper, Pyronia tithonus, which mostly visited Origanum. Eupatorium cannibinum had the highest Simpson’s Diversity score of 0.75, while Buddleia and Origanum were lower, scoring 0.66 and 0.50 respectively. No one plant was good at attracting all observed butterfly species, as each attracted only a subset of the butterfly community. We conclude that to create a butterfly-friendly garden, a variety of plant species are required as nectar sources for butterflies. Furthermore, garden plant recommendations can probably benefit from being more precise as to the species of butterfly they attract.  相似文献

Urbanized landscapes are the theater of multiple simultaneous biological invasions likely to affect spread dynamics when co-occurring introduced species interact with each other. Interactions between widespread invaders call for particular attention because they are likely to be common and because non-additive outcomes of such associations might induce negative consequences (e.g., enhanced population growth increasing impacts or resistance to control). We explored the invasions of two widespread invasive taxa: the Japanese knotweed species complex Fallopia spp. and the invasive garden ant Lasius neglectus, in the urban area of Lyon (France). First, we investigated landscape habitat preferences as well as co-occurrence rates of the two species. We showed that Fallopia spp. and L. neglectus had broadly overlapping environmental preferences (measured by seven landscape variables), but their landscape co-occurrence pattern was random, indicating independent spread and non-obligatory association. Second, as Fallopia spp. produce extra-floral nectar, we estimated the amount of nectar L. neglectus used under field conditions without ant competitors. We estimated that L. neglectus collected 150–321 kg of nectar in the month of April (when nectar production is peaking) in a 1162 m2 knotweed patch, an amount likely to boost ant population growth. Finally, at six patches of Fallopia spp. surveyed, herbivory levels were low (1–6% loss of leaf surface area) but no relationship between ant abundance (native and invasive) and loss of leaf surface was found. Co-occurrences of Fallopia spp. and L. neglectus are likely to become more common as both taxa colonize landscapes, which could favor the spread and invasion success of the invasive ant.  相似文献

Bees and their host flower populations were studied by identifying pollen to species or genus, from trap nests where bees were reared. Rare plant species in bee diets, and disturbance regimes, have not previously been researched and are emphasized here. Two focal bee groups with one species each (Megachilidae and Apidae) were studied in a 500,000-ha tropical reserve in the Yucatán Peninsula nine complete years. The number of rare or major pollen species in nests had no statistical correlation; thus, rare pollen analysis complements study of major brood provisions. We found most nests (87 % Megachile zaptlana, 93 % Centris analis) contained rare pollen; only 12 % of the 438 nests contained major pollen alone. Rare pollen sometimes indicated an energy source rather than a scarce protein resource. Trichome nectar of Cydista, along with Ipomoea and Caesalpinia, were nectar sources. Malpighiaceae, despite lacking nectar, often provided the complete Centris diet. Considering rare pollen, only Centris responded to drought, or competition from immigrant honeybees. Neither bee responded to hurricanes. Drought years coincided with low bee populations; Centris nests contained more rare species then. After feral Africanized honeybees colonized, Centris had more major species and fewer rare. Some herbarium vouchers from the study area contained exotic pollen, demonstrating in situ floral contamination and ecological generalization by bees, but this rarely occurred in plants found among the bee diets. Megachile and Centris responded differently to competition and resource scarcity, and plausibly evolved under different disturbance regimes, yet appeared well adapted to hurricane disturbance.  相似文献

Raffinose (sucrosylgalactoside oligosaccharide) is a water soluble carbohydrate and accumulates in response to abiotic stresses in plants. Plant raffinose synthases are poorly characterized, and the genes involved in raffinose biosynthesis are unknown in sugar beet. Here, we report the isolation of two genes encoding raffinose synthase (BvRS1 and BvRS2) as well as a gene encoding galactinol synthase (BvGolS1) from sugar beet. BvRS1 and BvRS2 show high homologies to Arabidopsis raffinose synthase AtRS5. BvRS1 and BvGolS1 were expressed in Escherichia coli. Crude extracts showed the activities of raffinose synthase and galactinol synthase. The K m values of BvRS1 for galactinol and sucrose and the K m values of BvGolS1 for UDP-galactose and myo-inositol were determined. The expression levels of BvRS1 were significantly higher than that of BvRS2. The mRNA for BvRS1 was rapidly induced by cold stress whereas the mRNA for BvRS2 was slowly induced by cold and salt stresses. These data suggest that BvRS1 and BvRS2 encode raffinose synthase genes responsible to cold and salt stress, respectively.  相似文献

The life cycle of flowering plants is partially defined by environmental cues like day length and temperature. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and temperate cereals, such as barley (Hordeum vulgare) and wheat (Triticum spp.), differences in life cycle control have been associated with a natural variation in FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) and VERNALIZATION 1-3 (VRN1-3). In sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.), variation in vernalization requirement and life cycle is determined by a major gene at the B locus. This gene has recently been identified as a pseudo-response regulator (PRR) gene BOLTING TIME CONTROL 1 (BTC1). A second gene in beet with homology to BTC1 and ARABIDOPSIS PSEUDO RESPONSE REGULATOR 7 (APRR7) in Arabidopsis was identified and termed Beta vulgaris PSEUDO RESPONSE REGULATOR 7 (BvPRR7). We functionally characterized BvPRR7 by transgenic analysis in Arabidopsis and expression profiling during development in beet. We show that BvPRR7 was diurnally regulated and responded to cold. Constitutive expression of BvPRR7 distorted diurnal rhythms and caused late flowering in Arabidopsis suggesting a conserved function of BvPRR7 in clock regulation. Conceivably, the retention of a functional role of BvPRR7 in clock regulation may have facilitated the evolution of a distinct role as major floral regulator of the second PRR7 homolog in beet, BTC1.  相似文献

We monitored differences in rates of foliar carbon-compound increases with progressive drought as an indicator of sink limitation status and subsequent drought tolerance. We postulate that species which increase foliar carbohydrates and protein-precipitable phenolics (PPP) more quickly than related species over the same time period and drought conditions have stronger sink limitations and are therefore less drought tolerant. Quercus macrocarpa, Q. shumardii, and Q. virginiana saplings were subjected to two treatments for approximately 3.5 months: (1) watered, which received the equivalent of average weekly precipitation for College Station, TX, USA, and (2) droughted, in which precipitation was reduced by 100%. Q. virginiana’s photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) were 44 and 54% greater, respectively, than the other species in the drought treatment. Q. virginiana’s gs also increased more dramatically with watering and subsequent increases in predawn leaf water potential. This plasticity suggests Q. virginiana is best equipped to deal with sporadic rainfall events and soil moisture changes, at least in the short term. Results indicate that the three species allocate carbon from photosynthate in different ways. Q. shumardii had the most soluble sugar in its foliage but had the least PPP, while Q. virginiana and macrocarpa had more PPP and less sugar than Q. shumardii. Diameter:height growth rate was greatest in Q. shumardii. Foliar protein-precipitable phenolic content appears to be more affected by factors other than drought. Differences in species’ physiological responses to drought may result in stand composition shifts with future climate alterations.  相似文献

The self-incompatible flowers of Linaria vulgaris have developed a range of mechanisms for attraction of insect visitors/pollinators and deterrence of ineffective pollinators and herbivores. These adaptive traits include the flower size and symmetry, the presence of a spur as a “secondary nectar presenter,” olfactory (secondary metabolites) and sensual (scent, flower color, nectar guide—contrasting palate) signals, and floral rewards, i.e. pollen and nectar. Histochemical tests revealed that the floral glandular trichomes produced essential oils and flavonoids, and pollen grains contained flavonoids, terpenoids, and steroids, which play a role of olfactory attractants/repellents. The nectary gland is disc-shaped and located at the base of the ovary. Nectar is secreted through numerous modified stomata. Nectar secretion began in the bud stage and lasted to the end of anthesis. The amount of produced nectar depended on the flower age and ranged from 0.21 to 3.95 mg/flower (mean?=?1.51 mg). The concentration of sugars in the nectar reached up to 57.0%. Both the nectar amount and sugar concentration demonstrated a significant year and population effect. Pollen production was variable between the years of the study. On average, a single flower of L. vulgaris produced 0.31 mg of pollen. The spectrum of insect visitors in the flowers of L. vulgaris differed significantly between populations. In the urban site, Bombus terrestris and Apis mellifera were the most common visitors, while a considerable number of visits of wasps and syrphid flies were noted in the rural site.  相似文献

A new strain of Chlorella sp. (Chlorella-Arc), isolated from Arctic glacier melt water, was found to have high specific growth rates (μ) between 3 and 27 °C, with a maximum specific growth rate of 0.85 day?1 at 15 °C, indicating that this strain was a eurythermal strain with a broad temperature tolerance range. To understand its acclimation strategies to low and high temperatures, the physiological and biochemical responses of the Chlorella-Arc to temperature were studied and compared with those of a temperate Chlorella pyrenoidosa strain (Chlorella-Temp). As indicated by declining F v/F m, photoinhibition occurred in Chlorella-Arc at low temperature. However, Chlorella-Arc reduced the size of the light-harvesting complex (LHC) to alleviate photoinhibition, as indicated by an increasing Chl a/b ratio with decreasing temperatures. Interestingly, Chlorella-Arc tended to secrete soluble sugar into the culture medium with increasing temperature, while its intracellular soluble sugar content did not vary with temperature changes, indicating that the algal cells might suffer from osmotic stress at high temperature, which could be adjusted by excretion of soluble sugar. Chlorella-Arc accumulated protein and lipids under lower temperatures (<15 °C), and its metabolism switched to synthesis of soluble sugar as temperatures rose. This reflects a flexible ability of Chlorella-Arc to regulate carbon and energy distribution when exposed to wide temperature shifts. More saturated fatty acids (SFA) in Chlorella-Arc than Chlorella-Temp also might serve as the energy source for growth in the cold and contribute to its cold tolerance.  相似文献

The results of the study of the effects of heterozygosity for mutations affecting coat pigmentation on the response to the environmental stress caused by extreme feeding conditions are provided. The animals with the following genotypes were taken into the study: homozygotes standard (+/+), hedlund white (h/h), and aleutian (a/a) and heterozygotes hedlund white (h/+) and aleutian (a/+). The animals homozygous for the aleutian mutation (a/a) showed a statistically lower growth rate than the animals of other genotypes both in the control and in the experiment (p < 0.05). Under the control conditions, the animals homozygous for both the wild type standard allele (+/+) and the mutant hedlund white (h/h) and aleutian (a/a) alleles showed the evident tendency for the zona fasciculata and zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex broadening compared to the experimental conditions. At the same time, in the animals heterozygous for the hedlund white (h/+) and the aleutian (a/+) mutations, a clear tendency for increasing size of the zona fasciculata and zona reticularis under the experimental conditions was observed. In the heterozygous animals, although we observed single destructive changes in the adrenal cortex under stress conditions, they were much less profound than in the homozygous ones. This may be related to the broader range of morphological adaptation in the heterozygotes, which gives them the possibility of more significant enlargement of the secreting zone to provide for its adequate functioning.  相似文献

The rewarding orchid Epipactis flava was studied in NW Thailand. Its flowers were visited by a wide range of insects, most of which served as pollinators. The most frequent pollen bearers were (in decreasing order): the cricket Homoeoxipha lycoides, stingless bees of the Tetragonula testaceitarsis/hirashimai complex, hoverflies of subfam. Syrphinae, the wasp Polybioides gracilis and sweat bees of subfam. Halictinae. We found no evidence of a link between the rheophytic habit of E. flava and its pollinator fauna. Whereas most pollinators visited the flowers to feed on nectar, females of Episyrphus alternans (Syrphidae: Syrphinae) were observed to oviposit despite the absence of prey for their young. Hence, we suggest that dual pollination systems contribute to the opportunist strategy of E. flava, and we discuss, in a phylogenetic framework, how the strategy fits in with those previously reported for Epipactis sect. Arthrochilium. The elastic attachment of the epichile (a universal trait in sect. Arthrochilium) was found to promote outcrossing, and we hypothesize that loss of the elastic hinge has provided a key innovation facilitating recurrent evolution of obligate autogamy in sect. Epipactis (which is nested in sect. Arthrochilium).  相似文献

A series of novel C18–C22 trans ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) with a single trans double bond in the ω3 position was found in Northern and Southern Hemisphere strains of the marine haptophyte Imantonia rotunda. The novel ω3 PUFA were identified as 18:3(9c,12c,15t) (0.2–1.8 % of total fatty acids), 18:4(6c,9c,12c,15t) (1.9–4.1 %), 18:5 (3c,6c,9c,12c,15t) (0.7–8.8 %), 20:5(5c,8c,11c,14c,17t) (1.2–4.1 %) and 22:6(4c,7c,10c,13c,16c,19t) (0.3–4.3 %), and were accompanied by larger proportions of the all cis isomers: 18:3ω3(9,12,15) (2.7–3.5 %), 18:4ω3(6,9,12,15) (9.3–14.3 %), 18:5ω3(3,6,9,12,15) (7.8–18.5 %), 20:5ω3(5,8,11,14,17) (3.2–3.9 %), 22:5ω3(7,10,13,16,19) (0.1–0.3 %) and 22:6ω3(4,7,10,13,16,19) (2.3–5.2 %). GC analysis of FAME using a non-polar column did not reveal the trans isomers as they coeluted with the all cis PUFA. However, GC using a polar column resolved the trans PUFA from the all cis PUFA, with the trans isomers eluting before the all cis isomers. GC-MS of FAME fractionated by argentation solid-phase chromatography confirmed the molecular ions of all components. FAME were derivatized to form 4,4-dimethyloxazoline (DMOX) derivatives, and GC-MS revealed the same double bond positions for each trans and cis FAME. The results suggest that the ω3 trans double bond originated from the Δ15/ω3 desaturation of 18:2(9c,12c), suggesting that this desaturase has dual cis/trans activity in these species. These results indicate that 18:3(9c,12c,15?t) was the precursor trans isomer produced for the trans series and further desaturation by the common Δ6 desaturase to produce the trans tetraene and successive elongations and desaturations led to the subsequent series of trans ω3 PUFA isomers. To our knowledge, this is the first report of these trans ω3 isomers occurring in strains of I. rotunda. These trans ω3 PUFA may be used as biomarkers in marine food webs for this species and with their unique structure may be biologically active.  相似文献
