Chromosome-banding studies have been carried out on 31 specimens of Otomys irroratus from six localities. Light-microscope preparations of chromosomes were obtained from cultures of fibroblasts, spleen lymphocytes, peripheral blood lymphocytes, and directly from bone marrow. Karyotypic variability, both numerical and morphological, was detected in three populations. Diploid numbers ranged from 2n = 23 to 2n = 32. Intrapopulation differences were chiefly caused by variation in the number of copies in two pairs of small, biarmed, partly heterochromatic autosomes suggestive of B chromosomes. A major morphological variation in the karyotypes involved the presence of seven pairs of biarmed autosomes with totally heterochromatic short arms in the populations distributed to the west of 26 degrees 57' E. To the east of this longitude, populations of this species exhibited mostly acrocentric autosomes. G-banding patterns of these karyotypes and those of a karyotype from a previous study (Robinson and Elder, 1987) were compared. A chromosome originating from a tandem fusion, possibly leading to partial reproductive isolation, was found in one population. Possible implications of these results for mechanisms of speciation are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Diurnality in rodents is relatively rare and occurs primarily in areas with low nighttime temperatures such as at high altitudes and desert areas. However, many factors can influence temporal activity rhythms of animals, both in the field and the laboratory. The temporal activity patterns of the diurnal ice rat were investigated in the laboratory with, and without, access to running wheels, and in constant conditions with running wheels. Ice rats appeared to be fundamentally diurnal but used their running wheels during the night. In constant conditions, general activity remained predominantly diurnal while wheel running was either nocturnal or diurnal. In some animals, entrainment of the wheel running rhythm was evident, as demonstrated by free-running periods that were different from 24 h. In other animals, the wheel running activity abruptly switched from nocturnal to subjective day as soon as the animals entered DD, and reverted back to nocturnal once returned to LD, suggesting the rhythms were masked by light. Wheel running rhythms appears to be less robust and more affected by light compared to general activity rhythms. In view of present and future environmental changes, the existence of more unstable activity rhythms that can readily switch between temporal niches might be crucial for the survival of the species.  相似文献

G- and C-banding delimits two cytogenetic groups within the vlei rat, Otomys irroratus. One has a diploid number of 2n = 24, resulting from a centric fusion of chromosomes 7 and 12 of the O. irroratus standard coupled with a tandem fusion to chromosome 8. The second has a diploid number of 2n = 28, lacks the compound chromosome, and appears to have a far wider geographic distribution within South Africa. Additionally, the two groups differ through the presence of cytotype-specific heterozygous centric fusions and one to three B chromosomes which appear as floating polymorphisms in the 2n = 28 complex.  相似文献

We studied the gut morphology of the ice rat Otomys sloggetti robertsi, a non-hibernating murid rodent endemic to the sub-alpine and alpine regions of the southern African Drakensberg and Maluti mountains. The gut structure of O. s. robertsi is well adapted for a high fibre, herbivorous diet, as is the case with other members of its subfamily Otomyinae. Despite the broad similarity in gross gut morphology with mesic- and arid-occurring otomyines, O. s. robertsi has a larger small intestine, caecum, stomach volume and parts of the colon, which we suggest are adaptations for increased energy uptake and/or poor diet quality in alpine environments. However, O. s. robertsi has a smaller larger intestine than other otomyines, perhaps because it occupies a mesic habitat. Seasonal sexual differences occurred, with females increasing dimensions of the stomach, small intestine length, caecum, and large intestine in summer. Sexual asymmetry in gut morphology may be related to increased energy requirements of females during pregnancy and lactation, indicating phenotypic plasticity in response to poor quality vegetation and a shorter growing season in alpine habitats.Communicated by G. We studied the architecture of the burrow system of the African ice rat Otomys sloggetti robertsi, a non–hibernating, diurnal murid rodent endemic to the sub–alpine and alpine regions of the southern African Drakensberg and Maluti mountains. In our study site we found ice rat burrows in two substrates (organic and mineral soils). The structure of the burrow system was similar in both soil types, comprising several interlinking tunnels, numerous burrow entrances and 1–2 nest chambers. However, the surface area of the burrow systems in organic soils was larger, the tunnels were deeper, and some of the systems contained two levels, all of which was contrary to our assumption that digging would be more difficult in the compact organic soils. Ice rats occur in colonies of up to 17 individuals, and the collected efforts of several individuals are required for constructing complex burrow systems. The burrow structure is similar to those of two arid–adapted relatives, Parotomys brantsii and Parotomys littledalei, suggesting that the burrow architecture among these three taxa may reflect the similar functions of burrows in extreme environments. For ice rats, burrows could provide a suitable microhabitat in which to escape adverse environmental conditions, particularly during winter. Moreover, ice rat burrows contained far fewer nest chambers than those of both Parotomys species, indicating that members in a colony share nest chambers, thereby facilitating huddling. Finally, the extensive interlinking tunnels may provide underground routes to aboveground feeding sites, thereby reducing exposure to adverse conditions.  相似文献

1. We test the hypothesis that the thermal physiology of Otomys sloggetti restricts its distribution to altitudes above 2000 m, below which it does not occur.
2. The thermal physiology of O . sloggetti is typical of rodents from warm/hot areas: the thermoneutral zone is relatively broad and lies between 26 and 28 °C; the upper limit of the thermoneutral zone can be extended by 4 °C through the use of hyperthermia; basal metabolic rate concurs with the allometrically predicted value; the lower critical temperature is high; minimal thermal conductance is 21% higher than the allometrically predicted value; and the capacity for noradrenaline-induced non-shivering thermogenesis is 19% lower than the allometrically predicted value.
3. Evaporative water loss and water flux rates are high and typical of mesic-adapted rodents.
4. The absence of O . sloggetti from warmer, lower-lying habitats cannot be attributed to its thermal physiology. We suggest that non-physiological factors, such as interspecific competition with Otomys irroratus , are more likely to restrict the distribution of O . sloggetti .  相似文献

The African ice rat Otomys sloggetti robertsi is a small rodent confined to cold, alpine habitats. It does not hibernate and is poorly adapted physiologically to low temperatures. We predicted and showed that its fur is denser than its congeners from warmer habitats, but it had shorter fur than expected. Dense fur would provide insulation and piloerection of short fur would facilitate heat gain from solar radiation during sun basking. These traits, in addition to other behavioural and morphological traits, would assist O. s. robertsi in meeting its thermoregulatory requirements in response to low temperatures.  相似文献

Pericentric inversions are important for evolutionary biology because of their potential role in speciation. They may result in reproductive isolation due to illegitimate pairing of homologues at meiosis which leads to the production of aneuploid gametes (containing deletions or duplications of chromosomal segments), and consequently mediate chromosomal divergence. In this study, we describe the prevalence of pericentric inversions in the African vlei rat, Otomys irroratus (OIR). The species is characterized by intraspecific chromosomal variation (2n = 23-32) across its distribution in southern Africa. Here, we analyzed 55 individuals collected from 7 localities in South Africa by G- and C-banding and chromosome painting with flow sorts of Myotomys unisulcatus. Of the 55 specimens that were analyzed, 47% contained inversions or centromeric shifts on 4 autosomes (OIR1, 4, 6 and 10) which were present singly in specimens (i.e. none of the specimens contained all 4 inversions concurrently). These inversions were found in both homozygous and heterozygous state over a wide geographic range suggesting that they are floating polymorphisms. Given the potential role of inversions in post-mating isolation (through production of aneuploid gametes), the prevalence of inversions as floating polymorphisms in the vlei rats suggests that they are probably retained in the population through suppression of recombination in the inverted regions of the chromosomes.  相似文献

We adopted an integrated systematic approach to delimit evolutionary species and describe phylogeographic, morphometric and ecological relationships in Otomys denti (from the Albertine Rift, Southern Rift in Malawi and the northern Eastern Arc Mountains) and Otomys lacustris (from the Southern Rift in Tanzania and Zambia, and the southern Eastern Arc Mountains). Molecular [cytochrome (cyt) b sequences, 1143 bp, N  = 18], craniometric (classical, N  = 100 and geometric, N  = 60) and ecological (Partial Least Squares regression of shape and ecogeographic variables) approaches show a profound, parallel disjunction between two groups: (1) Eastern Arc and Southern Rift (including the Malawi Rift) ( O. lacustris and Otomys denti sungae ) and (2) Albertine Rift ( Otomys denti denti and Otomys denti kempi ) taxa. Within both groups, cyt b sequences or craniometric analysis provided evidence for the differentiation of both southern and northern Eastern Arc from Southern Rift lineages (across the so-called Makambako Gap). Within the Albertine Rift ( denti – kempi ) lineage, populations from individual mountain ranges differed significantly in skull shape (but not size), but were similar genetically. Over-reliance in the past on very few morphological characters (e.g. number of molar laminae) and a polytypic species concept has obscured phylogenetic relationships and species discrimination in this group. We recognize at least three species in this group, and distinct lineages within two of these species. Each species or lineage was endemic to one of three regions: the Albertine Rift, the Malawi Rift or the Eastern Arc. Our result echo conclusions of recent studies of other mammalian and bird taxa and reflect the geomorphology and palaeoclimatic history of the region.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 913–941.  相似文献

Zokors (Myospalacinae) is a group of rodents specialized for underground life, endemics of eastern Asia, which is taxonomically and evolutionarily poorly studied. We examined genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships among zokors (Myospalax myospalax, Myospalax aspalax, Myospalax armandii, Myospalax psilurus, Myospalax smithii) using RAPD-PCR. The subfamily Myospalacinae was shown to be monophyletic and contain four evolutionary branches: M. myospalax, M. aspalax-M. armandii, M. smithii and M. psilurus. Genetic differences and high differentiation were found among the species and between two geographic forms of Manchurian zokor M. psilurus from the marginal parts of the range, Transbaikalia and Primorye. The psiluris phylogroup was shown to be dichotomically divided into two clades according to the geographical distribution of animals from Transbaikalia and Primorye. The genetic differentiation between the geographic forms of M. psilurus corresponded to the differentiation between morphologically similar species M. aspalax and M. armandii. M. armandii is a sister taxon with regard to M. aspalax. This new evidence on the evolutionary relationships among zokors does not contradict the traditional views inferred from morphological, karyological, and allozyme data, on apartness of M. myospalax and the character of evolution in this group. The species status of Myospalax psilurus Milne-Edwards, 1874, M. epsilanus Thomas, 1912, and M. armandii Milne-Edwards, 1867, which had been suggested earlier on the basis of biochemical and karyological data, was confirmed.  相似文献

Genetic variation was studied using protein electrophoresis of 28–38 gene loci in 1347 specimens of Apodemus agrar-ius, A. peninsulae, A. flavicollis, A. sylvaticus, A. alpicola, A. uralensis, A . cf. hyrcanicus, A. hermonensis, A. m. mystacinus and A. m. epimelas , representing 121 populations from Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Mean values of heterozygosity per locus for each species ranged from 0.02 to 0.04. Mean values of Nel's genetic distance ( D ) between the taxa ranged from 0.06 (between A. flavicollis and A. alpicola) to 1.34 (between A. uralensis and A. agrarius ). The highest values of D were found between A. agrarius and other Apodemus species (0.62-1.34). These values correspond to those generally observed between genera in small mammals. Our data show that A. agrarius and A. peninsulae are sister species, well-differentiated from other taxa. High genetic distance between A. m. mystacinus and A. m. epimelas leads us to consider them distinct species and sister taxa to other Western Palaearctic species of the subgenus Sylvaemus . The data also suggest a recent separation of members of the latter group from a common ancestor, and subsequent rapid radiation, making it difficult to infer phylogenetic relationships. Some taxonomic implications of the results are discussed further.© 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 75 , 395–419.  相似文献

Although they represent a quarter of the mammalian species, the evolutionary relationships among as well as within, the main murid lineages are still controversial. The subfamily Gerbillinae is no exception as previous studies based on morphological, karyotypical, and allozyme characters are highly incongruent. Here, we present the first molecular phylogeny for gerbils based on cytochrome b and 12S rRNA mitochondrial genes. Results are largely congruent between the two genes as well as with the concatenated data set with most of the nodes being well-supported. Based on the topologies retrieved here, we (1) propose the identification of three main clades, (2) support the split of Tatera genus into an Asian and an African group, the latter including Gerbillurus species, and (3) provide some evidence towards the inaccuracy of subgeneric divisions within both Gerbillus and Meriones. In addition, the sharp contrast between the genetic characters and morphological data sets suggest high levels of convergence, probably as a result of strong environmental constraints imposed on these rodents adapted to arid and semi-arid regions. Finally, molecular datings for the various cladogenetic events are in good agreement with the known gerbilline fossil record and support an African origin with subsequent migrations to Asia.  相似文献

The review, which consist of two parts, summarizes literature data on all genetic markers used in population studies of Atlantic salmon. The first part of the review concerns karyotype features and allozyme markers of Salmo salar. The latter are effectively used for distinguishing populations and subpopulations of Atlantic salmon, as well as for genetic monitoring of its populations. It is shown that the distribution of alleles of some allozymes may be related to selection for resistance to certain environmental conditions.  相似文献

1. Electrophoretic variations of 9 erythrocyte proteins, coded by a separate gene locus each, were analysed in and among the 5 Malayan species of Rattus belonging to the subgenus Lenothrix. 2. The average proportion of loci heterozygous per individual for the taxa analysed is 0.037. 3. The results obtained confirm the specific status of the 5 taxa studied. With respect to the relative affinities among the species studied, the present results could resolve the discrepancies between conclusions based on morphological evidence and those based on cytological evidence. 4. The 5 species of Rattus studied may be assigned to 4 groups and comparative data suggest that these groups are relatively distantly related to one another.  相似文献

1. Nine erythrocyte proteins coded by a separate locus each were analysed in and among seven Malayan species of Rattus belonging to three subgenera. 2. Electrophoretic data obtained confirm the specific status of the seven taxa and divide the seven species into three groups which correspond with Ellerman's (1949) subgenera Stenomys, Maxomys and Leopoldamys. 3. A comparative study together with 11 other species of Malayan Rattus previously analysed show that, with few exceptions, the overall relationships among the 18 species based on electrophoretic data correspond well with conclusions based on morphological evidence. 4. Malayan species of Rattus are relatively very diverse genetically (S = 0.27, range 0.01-0.94).  相似文献

Variation among loci in the distribution of allele frequencies among subpopulations is well known; how to tell when the variation exceeds that expected when all loci are subject to uniform evolutionary processes is not well known. If locus-specific effects are important, the ability to detect those effects should vary with the level of gene flow. Populations with low gene flow should exhibit greater variation among loci in Fst than populations with high gene flow, because gene flow acts to homogenize allele frequencies among subpopulations. Here I use Lewontin and Krakauer's k statistic to describe the variance among allozyme loci in 102 published data sets from fishes. As originally proposed, k > 2 was considered evidence that the variation in Fst among loci is greater than expected from neutral evolution. Although that interpretation is invalid, large differences in k in different populations suggest that locus-specific forces may be important in shaping genetic diversity. In these data, k is not greater for populations with expected low levels of gene flow than for populations with expected high levels of gene flow. There is thus no evidence that locus-specific forces are of general importance in shaping the distribution of allele frequencies at enzyme loci among populations of fishes.  相似文献
