General health, clinical-chemical blood analysis and copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se) and vitamin E concentrations in plasma and liver tissue (wet weight, ww) of two extensive grazing sheep flocks without mineral supply were compared to the status of local roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) populations (liver samples). Both sheep flocks were classified as healthy except for a remarkable variation in body weight and a slight foot rot infection in one flock. Hematology of sheep was normal, and total protein and creatinine as well as activities of creatin kinase, aspartat-amino-transferase, alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl-transferase in plasma were within reference levels. The mean of glutamate dehydrogenase (13.8 U/l) was slightly elevated in one flock. Mean liver concentrations of Zn (38.9 and 43.5 mg/kg ww) and Cu (111 and 87.5 mg/kg ww) in sheep flocks were higher compared to the respective roe deer populations (27.5 and 36.3 mg Zn/kg ww; 18.3 and 28.6 mg Cu/kg ww). This is supposed to be caused by differences in Cu and Zn metabolism in sheep and roe deer. Selenium deficiency was diagnosed in liver samples of both sheep flocks (0.21 and 0.23 mg/kg ww). There were neither significant differences compared to roe deer (0.21 and 0.27 mg Se/kg ww) nor differences depending on location. Correlations between plasma and liver concentrations of Cu, Zn and Se were not significant in sheep. Means of vitamin E in liver samples (30.6 and 41.8 mg/kg ww) were higher in roe deer populations. This may be caused by the opportunity of selective browsing for wild ruminants, which allows access to younger plants which are higher in vitamin E.  相似文献

Summary Hyperaccumulators (here defined as species containing at least 500 μg/g dryweight of either copper or cobalt in leaves), are of interest for the fields of mineral exploration and phytochemistry. Reported hyperaccumulation of copper inAeolanthus biformifolius and the presence of two other species on copper/cobalt mineralization in Shaba (Za?re) led to a survey of these elements in 49 species of the African genusAeolanthus Mart.A. biformifolius appears to be also a hyperaccumulator of Co (2520 μg/g in leaves, 4300 μg/g in corms). Cobalt levels for most species ofAeolanthus were considerably above typical values for phanerogams and indicate the favorable potential of the genus for further study.  相似文献

Comparative study of copper and zinc metabolism in cattle and camel   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
At an experimental farm, five camels and five cows were fed a similar basal diet for 6 mo. They received oral trace element supplementation for 3 mo (day 22–112). This supplementation included zinc, copper, selenium, managanese, iodine, and cobalt, and corresponded to twice the requirements generally recommended for cows. Plasma copper and zinc concentrations were significantly lower in the camels (61 μg/100 mL for copper and 38 μg/100 mL for zinc) than in the cows (111 and 83, respectively). The supplementation had no effect on plasma zinc concentration in the camels in spite of the low observed values in this species. Liver copper concentration at the beginning of the trial was lower in the camels (9 ppm) than in the cows (35 ppm), and stayed at lower levels during the entire supplementation period. There was no clear difference in fecal excretion of copper and zinc between the camels and the cows. The results suggested that trace element requirements are lower in camels than in cows and that camels regulate their plasma zinc concentration at a very low level (<40 μg/100 mL).  相似文献

Serum samples of 749 sheep from 75 sheep flocks in Norway, i.e. 361 lambs (6 to 7 months old) and 388 adults (>1.5 year), were analysed for antibodies to Ehrlichia equi. Ten animals from each flock were examined. Seropositive animals were found along the coast of southern Norway from Vestfold to S?r-Tr?ndelag (as far north as 63°38'N). Seropositive sheep were not found in southeast, east or northern Norway. Thirty-two flocks were seropositive, although tick-borne fever had only been diagnosed earlier in half of these. In 78% of the seropositive flocks, more than 80% of the sheep were seropositive. A total of 35.7 % and 36.3 % of lambs and adults were found seropositive, respectively. However, the overall seroprevalence among animals that had been grazing on Ixodes pastures were 0.80 for the lambs and 0.84 for the adults. Mean antibody titres (± SD) (log10) in seropositive lambs and adults were 2.59 (± 0.449) and 2.70 (± 0.481), respectively. No significant differences in either seroprevalence or mean antibody titre between sheep of different ages were obtained in this study. Based on antibodies 94% of sheep flocks on Ixodes pastures were infected with a granulocytic Ehrlichia infection. The association between seropositive flocks and Ixodes infested pasture shows a very high degree of agreement (p < 0.00001). The present study indicates that granulocytic Ehrlichia infection in sheep is underdiagnosed in Norway.  相似文献

A three-year survey (1997–99) was carried out on organically reared sheep flocks throughout Sweden. The aim was to determine the prevalence and intensity of nematode infections and to establish relationships between sheep management practices and parasite infections. Faecal samples from ewes and lambs were collected from 152 organic flocks around lambing-time and during the grazing-period for analysis. Results were compared with the different management practices that farmers use to prevent parasitism in their flocks. A high proportion of the flocks was infected with nematodes. The most prevalent species were Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumeincta, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis and Chabertia ovina and infections progressively increased during summer in lambs grazing on permanent pastures. Severity of parasitic infection in lambs was highly dependent on egg output from the ewes. H. contortus was found in 37% of the flocks, even at latitudes approximating the Polar Circle. Nematodirus battus was recorded for the first time in Sweden during the course of this study. Lambs turned out onto permanent pasture showed higher nematode faecal egg counts (epg) than lambs that had grazed on pastures, which had not carried sheep the previous year. This beneficial effect of lambs grazing non-infected pastures persisted if the ewes were treated with an anthelmintic before turn-out and if the lambs were kept on pastures of low infectivity after weaning. In lambs, the prevalence and the magnitude of their egg counts were higher during autumn in flocks where lambs were slaughtered after 8 months of age, compared with flocks where all lambs were slaughtered before this age. These results will be used in providing advice to farmers of ways to modify their flock management in order to minimise the use of anthelmintics, but at the same time efficiently produce prime lambs.  相似文献

In the case of experimental heart muscle infarction, the infarcted tissue of 18 pigs had a cadmium content of 0.38 μg/g dry weight and a cobalt content of 0.45 μg/g dry weight. In 25 non-infarcted pig hearts, the cadmium concentration amounted to 0.27 μg/g dry weight and the cobalt concentration to 0.37 μg/g dry weight. Thus, as far as the infarcted heart muscle tissue is concerned, there is a highly significant increase in the cadmium content (p<0.01) and a significant increase in cobalt content (p<0.05) compared to a non-infarcted heart. No differences were established with regard to chromium concentrations.  相似文献

The subantarctic Kerguelen Islands (49°S, 70°E) contain freshwaters among the most isolated in the world from direct human activities. Cadmium and copper concentrations were analyzed in muscle and liver tissues of 57 non-migratory brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) inhabiting the Sud River of Kerguelen Islands. The mean cadmium concentration in liver was 1.13 μg/g dry wt, within the range of levels measured in liver of marine fish from the Southern Ocean. Muscular Cd levels (0.12 μg/g dry wt) were roughly ten times higher than those measured in Kerguelen’s marine fish species. Copper levels were very high in the two organs (62.27 μg/g dry wt in liver and 3.02 μg/g dry wt in muscle) compared to those detected in fish from the Southern Ocean. Regarding the seasonal trend, the highest Cu and Cd muscular levels were measured in fish at the end of the austral winter, whereas the highest hepatic levels were observed at the end of the austral summer. Moreover, hepatic cadmium levels were higher in females than in males. These results could be related to brook trout spawning physiological preparations and foraging behavior during the summer period. We provide here the first results about Cu and Cd levels in liver and muscle of a freshwater fish species in an insular subantarctic context. They are in agreement with the high cadmium contamination found in fish of the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Two-wk-old broiler chicks were inoculated via crop intubation withEimeria acervulina at two doses: 105 or 106 sporulated oocysts/bird or withEimeria tenella at a dose of 105 sporulated oocysts/bird. Serum and liver samples were collected on days 3 and 6 post-inoculation (PI). There were no significant changes in serum or liver zinc, copper, and iron concentrations in any of the infected groups by 3 d PI. However, on d 6, PI serum protein was significantly reduced in all of the infected groups compared to their pair-fed controls. The chicks infected withE. tennella had significantly reduced serum zinc (1.20 vs 1.77 μg/mL) and iron (0.44 vs 1.28 μg/mL) concentrations and significantly elevated serum copper (0.28 vs 0.17 μg/mL) and ceruloplasmin levels (20.33 vs 11.11 μg/mL) compared to their pair-fed counterparts. Those chicks infected withE. acervulina (106 oocysts/bird) exhibited significantly reduced serum iron concentration by 6 days PI (0.90 vs 1.14 μg/mL). Liver zinc was significantly increased in the chicks infected withE. tenella (349 vs 113 μg/g dry liver wt), as was copper (24 vs 19 μg/g), whereas liver iron concentration was significantly reduced (172 vs 243 μg/g) compared to pair-fed controls. At both dose levels, the chicks infected withE. acervulina exhibited a significant reduction in liver iron by 6 d PI. Hepatic cytosol metals generally reflected whole tissue levels. Metallothionein (MT)-bound zinc was significantly elevated in the chicks infected withE. tenella. Iron bound to a high molecular weight, heat-stable protein fraction (presumably cytoplasmic ferritin) was significantly reduced in chicks infected withE. acervulina, as well as those infected withE. tenella. Collectively, the changes in serum zinc, copper, and iron concentrations, as well as the changes in hepatic zinc and MT-zinc concentrations in the chicks infected withE. tenella were similar to changes evoked during an acute phase response to infection. It is possible that a secondary bacterial infection or inflammation stemming from erosion of the lining of the cecum may play a role in the response of trace element metabolism to theE. tenella infection. The quality of the diet of obese children is poor. Eating habits may alter micronutrient status in obese patients. In this study, we determined the serum levels of selenium, zinc, vanadium, molybdenum, iron, copper, beryllium, boron, chromium, manganese, cobalt, silver, barium, aluminum, nickel, cadmium, mercury, and lead in obese Turkish children. Thirty-four obese and 33 healthy control subjects were enrolled in the study. Serum vanadium and cobalt levels of obese children were significantly lower than those of the control group (0.244 ± 0.0179 vs. 0.261 ± 0.012 μg/l, p < 0.001, and 0.14 ± 0.13 vs. 0.24 ± 0.15 μg/l, p = 0.011, respectively). There was no significant difference between groups regarding the other serum trace element levels. In conclusion, there may be alterations in the serum levels of trace elements in obese children and these alterations may have a role in the pathogenesis of obesity.  相似文献

Muscle, liver, kidney and skin samples taken from 78 harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) were analysed for mercury, cadmium, zinc, copper and selenium. The highest concentrations of mercury were found in the liver (geometric mean 4.17 g/g wet weight), whilst the highest concentrations of cadmium were in the kidney (g.m. 13.2 g/g ww). The levels of cadmium were more than ten times higher than in harbour porpoises from the North Sea and the British NW coast, whilst the mercury levels were about the same. The importance of the cadmium content in the prey is discussed, but this attempt did not revealed the differences. Very high levels of zinc (g.m. 359 g/g ww) and selenium (g.m. 28.6 g/g ww) were found in skin samples, respectively seven and ten times more than in liver. A significant correlation was found between age and the level of mercury and cadmium in all organs. The concentration of mercury and selenium in liver and skin samples and of cadmium and zinc in kidney samples were highly correlated.  相似文献

Liver samples from 422 wild moose (Alces alces), 280 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and 73 reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) collected by hunters in various localities in Norway, 2002-2003, were analyzed for the essential trace elements cobalt, copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum, selenium (Se), and zinc. Significant differences in hepatic concentrations among species were found for all elements except for Mn, and considerable individual and geographic variations were seen. Roe deer had statistically significant lower Se levels (median: 0.51 μg Se/g dry weight) than did moose (0.77 μg Se/g) and reindeer (0.85 μg Se/g). Moose from two coastal municipalities with high precipitation had considerably higher Se concentrations than those from the other localities studied. Seventy-nine roe deer (28%) and 36 moose (9%) had Se concentrations below that regarded as deficient in domestic ruminants. The Se status in roe deer was lower than previously reported in Europe. Moose had a significantly higher Cu (222 μg Cu/g dw) than did roe deer (112 μg Cu/g) and reindeer (105 μg Cu/g). The Cu status of moose and roe deer in Norway are among the highest reported in Europe. However, a suboptimal Se and Cu status was found in moose from Tvedestrand, a population which has suffered from a reduced condition and productivity. The variability in trace element status among hunted cervids, with no apparent signs of deficiency or toxicity, probably reflects adaptations in these wild ruminant species to cope with this. However, subtle clinical signs and lesions are difficult to detect and further research is needed.  相似文献

Although the analysis of metallothionein (MT) by radioimmunoassay (RIA) is not a common technique, its use is preferred over other methods since it offers the advantages of sensitivity and specificity. In this paper we present data on the basal levels of MT in rat tissues and physiological fluids of female Sprague-Dawley rats. The mean basal MT concentrations of the following organs and fluids were determined by RIA to be: liver (9.8 μg/g), kidney (68 μ/g), brain (0.8 μg/g), spleen (1.0 μg/g), heart (5.4 μg/g), plasma (11 ng/ml), and urine (200–300 μg/g creatinine). Following subcutaneous exposure to inorganic mercury (0.2 μmol/kg/d, 5 d a week for up to 4 wk), the metal accumulated primarily in the kidney. There was also a simultaneous accumulation of zinc in the liver and of zinc and copper in the kidney. Induction of MT did take place in liver, kidney, brain, and spleen. No increases in the MT contents of blood and urine were noted. The excess zinc and copper in the kidney of exposed animals were found to be associated predominantly with MT. No overt signs of mercury toxicity were noted in these animals and the incidence of proteinurea was nil. The data are discussed with reference to methods of MT determination in animal tissues and in relation to mercury metabolism and toxicity.  相似文献

The regional brain distribution of metallothionein (MT), zinc, and copper in the brain was determined in nine anatomical regions (olfactory bulb, cortex, corpus striatum, hippocampus, thalamus plus hypothalamus, pons plus medulla oblongata, cerebellum, midbrain, and white matter) and was compared between two different strains of rat (Sprague-Dawley [SD] and Lewis). No significant difference was observed in the whole-brain MT level between the two strains (17.8 ± 3.4 μg/g in SD rats and 20.3 ± 2.3 μg/g in Lewis rats). In SD rats, however, MT was more highly expressed in the white matter than in the other regions studied. In contrast, MT concentration was highest in the cortex and lowest in the olfactory bulb in Lewis rats. The MT levels in the cortex, corpus striatum, hippocampus, and thalamus plus hypothalamus were significantly lower in SD rats than in Lewis rats. In both strains, the olfactory bulb contained markedly higher levels of both zinc and copper than the other regions (27.9 ±6.8 μg/g zinc in SD rats and 27.6 ± 6.9 μg/g zinc in Lewis rats, and 5.2 ± 1.5 μg/g copper in SD rats and 11.1 ± 4.8 μg/g copper in Lewis rats). The next high-est zinc levels were seen in the hippocampus, whereas the next highest copper levels were in the corpus striatum in both SD and Lewis rats. The high levels of zinc and copper in the olfactory bulb were not accompanied by concomitant high MT concentrations. These results indicate that the strain of rat as well as the anatomical brain region should be taken into account in MT and metal distribution studies. However, the highest concentrations of zinc and copper in olfactory bulb were common to both SD and Lewis rats. The discrepancy between MT and the metal levels in olfactory bulb suggests a role for other proteins in addition to MT in the homeostatic control of zinc and copper.  相似文献

Liver samples from 245 wild red deer (Cervus elaphus) collected during the licensed hunting season in 2001 from five different locations in western Norway were analyzed for copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), and selenium (Se). The associations between these trace elements and geographical location, age group, and sex were studied. The median (and range of) liver concentrations (microg/g wet weight) for all the examined deer were: Cu 20 (1.7-103), Co 0.08 (<0.01-0.18), and Se 0.09 (0.04-1.0). The results indicate a generally low status of Cu and Se. In total, 15 (6%) red deer had deficient Cu levels (< 4 (microg/g). For all three elements, the liver concentrations showed a significant geographic variation. The geographic difference was most distinct for Cu. The lowest median Cu concentration was found in deer from the island Hitra, where 13% of the animals had deficient Cu levels. Significant differences between age groups were found for all elements, and generally, the adults (> or =2.5 yr) had the highest levels. No significant sex differences within the various age groups were found, with three exceptions: female calves and adults had significantly higher Co levels than male deer, and adult males had significantly higher Se levels than adult females. The Cu and Se status of wild red deer in parts of Norway is low; however, the significance of this needs to be explored further.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to provide data on the main toxic and trace metals in the liver and kidney of domestic dogs in Galicia, NW Spain and to evaluate the influence of diet, sex, age, and pathological lesions on metal accumulation. Samples of the liver and kidney from 77 male and female dogs, aged between 6 mo and 18 yr, were collected during ordinary necropsy. Samples were acid-digested and metal concentrations determined by inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-mass spectrometry and ICP-atomic emission spectrometry. Mean toxic metal concentrations (geometric means for liver and kidney respectively) were 11.5 and 15.8 μg/kg wet weight for As, 56.3 and 166 μg/kg for Cd, 32.7 and 51.9 μg/kg for Hg, and 60.1 and 23.6 μg/kg for Pb. For the trace metals, these concentrations were respectively 16.3 and 21.0 μg/kg for Co, 57.6 and 43.9 μg/kg for Cr, 42.1 and 5.95 mg/kg for Cu, 394 mg/kg and 95.7 mg/kg for Fe, 2.39 and 0.956 mg/kg for Mn, 0.522 and 0.357 mg/kg for Mo, 23.8 and 26.8 μg/kg for Ni, 0.686 and 1.39 mg/kg for Se, and 46.7 and 26.0 mg/kg for Zn. Cd concentrations in the kidney significantly increased with age, and Co concentrations in the liver and kidney significantly decreased with age. Hepatic Pb concentrations were significantly higher in growing (<1 yr) and old (>10 yr) dogs. Animals with pathological lesions showed significantly higher Co and lower Mn and Zn concentrations in liver than animals with-out macroscopic abnormalities. Dogs that received commercial diets in general showed low variability in hepatic mineral status compared to animals that receive homemade feeds or a mixture of commercial and homemade feeds.  相似文献

Plasma α-tocopherol (vit E) and blood selenium (Se) concentrations in February were determined in samples from 314 dairy cows in Norway, selected to provide a representative subset of the Norwegian dairy cow population. Each sample was followed by a questionnaire with information about feeding of the cow at the time of sampling. The results were correlated to herd data and to calving and health data for each cow from the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System and the Norwegian Cattle Health Recording System. The mean concentrations were 6.9 μg vit E per ml plasma and 0.16 μg Se per g blood. Both levels were highest in mid lactation. Plasma vit E varied with the amount of silage fed to the cow, while blood Se varied with the amount of concentrates and mineral supplements, and with geographical region. No differences in vit E or Se levels were found between cows with recorded treatments for mastitis, parturient paresis or reproductive disorders in the lactation during or immediately prior to sampling, and those without such treatments. For ketosis, a small difference in blood Se was found between the groups with or without recorded treatments. It is concluded that winter-fed lactating cows in Norway had an adequate plasma level of vit E and a marginal-to-adequate level of Se.  相似文献

The serum concentrations of copper, zinc, iron, and cobalt and copper/zinc ratio were investigated in horses infected with equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). Nine horses were naturally infected with the virus and nine healthy horses served as controls. The concentrations of copper, zinc, iron, and cobalt were determined spectrophotometrically in the blood serum of all horses. The results were (expressed in micrograms per deciliters) copper 2.80 ± 0.34 vs 1.12 ± 0.44, zinc 3.05 ± 0.18 vs 0.83 ± 0.06, iron 2.76 ± 0.17 vs 3.71 ± 0.69, cobalt 0.19 ± 0.37 vs 0.22 ± 0.45, and copper/zinc ratio 0.72 ± 0.38 vs 1.41 ± 0.36 for control vs infected group, respectively. In conclusion, copper and zinc concentrations of the infected group were lower than the control group (p < 0.001), whereas iron concentration and the copper/zinc ratio of the infected group were higher than the control group (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001). The cobalt concentration was not found to be statistically different between two groups. It might be emphasized that copper/zinc ratio was significantly affected by the EHV-1 infection, so it could be taken into consideration during the course of infection. Women with preeclampsia have been shown to have elevated blood levels of the metabolite homocysteine, and alterations in blood levels of zinc and copper have also been reported. This study measured plasma levels of zinc, copper, and homocysteine in women with preeclampsia and in women with healthy, normotensive pregnancies. For the patients with preeclampsia compared with controls, significantly higher mean plasma levels were found of homocysteine (16.39 vs 9.45 nmol/mL; p≤0.001), zinc (15.53 vs 11.93 μg/g protein; p < 0.05), and copper (47.90 vs 31.60 μg/g protein; p=0.001). The ratio of plasma Cu/Zn levels tended to be higher in preeclamptic women and could be taken as an index of inflammatory reaction, but the difference was not significant. Homocysteine concentrations correlated positively with plasma zinc concentrations in women with preeclampsia (r=0.588, p=0.003) but not in women with healthy pregnancies. No correlations were observed between plasma levels of homocysteine and copper. Thus, the present study found evidence that preeclampsia might be associated with hyperhomocysteinemia and elevated blood levels of zinc and copper. Furthermore, elevated blood levels of zinc were significantly associated with hyperhomocysteinemia in preeclampsia. More studies are warranted to investigate further any relationship between altered homocysteine metabolism and levels of zinc and copper in preeclampsia.  相似文献

In two fully crossed, three-way, two by three by three, factorially arranged experiments, female weanling rats were fed a basal diet supplemented with iron at 15 and 45 μg/g, nickel at 0, 5, and 50 μg/g and copper at 0, 0.5, and 5 μg/g (Expt. 1) or 0, 0.25, and 12 μg/g (Expt. 2). Expt. 1 was terminated at 11 weeks, and Expt. 2 at 8 weeks because, at those times, some rats fed no supplemental copper and the high level of nickel began to lose weight, or die from heart rupture. The experiments showed that nickel interacted with copper and this interaction was influenced by dietary iron. If copper deficiency was neither very severe or mild, copper deficiency signs of elevated levels of total lipids and lipid phosphorus in liver and plasma, and cholesterol in plasma, were made more severe by supplemental dietary nickel. Rats in which nickel supplementation exacerbated copper deficiency did not exhibit a depressed level of copper in liver and plasma. Also, although iron deprivation enhanced the interaction between nickel and copper, iron deprivation did not significantly depress the level of copper in liver and plasma. The findings confirmed that, in rats, a complex relationship exists between nickel, copper, and iron, thus indicating that both the iron and copper status of experimental animals must be controlled before data about nickel nutriture and metabolism can be compared among studies.  相似文献

The serum selenium (Se) concentrations were determined to be 105.6±15.6 μg/L ( ) and 116.7±18.4 μg/L ( ) for the ovarian cancer patients and the control subjects in Singapore, respectively (p<0.0065). When we separated the patients into three age groups, namely <30, 30–50, and >50 yr, the ovarian cancer patients showed significantly lower mean serum Se levels than the control subjects for the 30–50-yr age group only. However, when the analysis of variance was used to evaluate the data, the values indicated that the age of the subject did not significantly affect the serum Se level. Our findings suggest that there is an inverse relationship between serum Se concentration and the incidence of human ovarian cancer. A modified simple fluorimetric method for the determination of serum Se concentration is described. The procedure, with a sensitivity limit of 5 μg/L and percentage recoveries of 96.2–100.7%, requires only 0.2 mL of serum sample.  相似文献
