1. P. plebeius, a trichopteran with marine intertidal larvae, oviposits in the coelom of a starfish, Patiriella exigua. Oviposition occurs mainly in the spring and autumn months. 2. In spite of the intracoelomic location of the embryos, the development of P. plebeius follows an unmodified trichopteran mode, including the characteristic blastokinesis. Nutrients are not supplied to the caddis embryos by the host starfish. 3. Hatching takes place in the starfish coelum after 17-18 days. The newly hatched caddis larvae quickly escape to their rock pool habitat. 4. The form of the female ovipositor indicates that other species of Chathamidae utilize starfish species as oviposition hosts. 5. This mode of oviposition offers protection to the caddis embryos in the intertidal habitat.  相似文献

1. Six species of drosophilid parasitoids of the genus Leptopilina (Hymenoptera: Eucoilidae) exist in Europe. Laboratory experiments reveal that the fundamental niches for most of these species overlap. Field collections indicate that overlap in their realised niches is much smaller.
2. Here data are presented for the little known species Leptopilina longipes. Field and laboratory observations indicate that its niche overlaps with both that of L. clavipes and L. heterotoma .
3. The host detection behaviour of L. longipes is examined and it is shown that L. longipes uses vibrotaxis to detect its hosts. This behaviour of L. longipes is compared with that of L. heterotoma and L. clavipes , which both use the ovipositor in host detection.
4. The ways in which differences in host searching behaviour can contribute to niche segregation and coexistence of these species are discussed.  相似文献

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy involving genetic and environmental factors whose interaction might influence disease risk. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of milk-feeding practices and the HLA-DQ genotype on intestinal colonization of Bacteroides species in infants at risk of CD development. This study included 75 full-term newborns with at least one first-degree relative suffering from CD. Infants were classified according to milk-feeding practice (breast-feeding or formula feeding) and HLA-DQ genotype (high or low genetic risk). Stools were analyzed at 7 days, 1 month, and 4 months by PCR and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The Bacteroides species diversity index was higher in formula-fed infants than in breast-fed infants. Breast-fed infants showed a higher prevalence of Bacteroides uniformis at 1 and 4 months of age, while formula-fed infants had a higher prevalence of B. intestinalis at all sampling times, of B. caccae at 7 days and 4 months, and of B. plebeius at 4 months. Infants with high genetic risk showed a higher prevalence of B. vulgatus, while those with low genetic risk showed a higher prevalence of B. ovatus, B. plebeius, and B. uniformis. Among breast-fed infants, the prevalence of B. uniformis was higher in those with low genetic risk than in those with high genetic risk. Among formula-fed infants, the prevalence of B. ovatus and B. plebeius was increased in those with low genetic risk, while the prevalence of B. vulgatus was higher in those with high genetic risk. The results indicate that both the type of milk feeding and the HLA-DQ genotype influence the colonization process of Bacteroides species, and possibly the disease risk.  相似文献

为了解小长蝽Nysius ericae(Schilling)线粒体基因组结构及长蝽总科的分子系统发育关系。本试验采用Illumina MiSeq测序平台对小长蝽线粒体基因进行测序,对基因组序列进行拼装、注释和特征分析,利用最大似然法和贝叶斯法构建基于12种长蝽总科昆虫线粒体全基因组核苷酸序列的系统发育树。小长蝽线粒体基因组全长为16 330 bp(GenBank登录号:MW465654),基因组包括13个蛋白编码基因(PCGs),22个tRNA基因,2个rRNA基因和1段非编码控制区。11个蛋白质编码基因的起始密码子为典型的ATN;cox1,nad4l的起始密码子为TTG。cob的终止密码子为TAG,其余蛋白编码基因的终止密码子为TAA。只有trnS1缺少DHU臂,其余tRNA基因均能形成典型的三叶草结构。12种长蝽总科昆虫线粒体全基因组序列构建的昆虫系统发育树结果显示,小长蝽与Nysius plebeius具有更近的亲缘关系,且与传统形态学分类基本一致。小长蝽线粒体基因组符合长蝽总科线粒体基因组的一般特征。结果表明小长蝽与N.plebeius的亲缘关系更近。  相似文献

Perkinsus chesapeaki is reported from stout razor clams Tagelus plebeius in Delaware Bay, extending the known range of P. chesapeaki north of Chesapeake Bay. P. marinus, which causes dermo disease, is prevalent in cultured and wild oysters at this site, but was not detected in T. plebeius. Evidence for the presence of disseminated neoplasia, also reported from Chesapeake Bay, was equivocal. Although P. chesapeaki infections were associated with mortality events, light infection intensities and a general lack of histopathological evidence of disease limit inferences about a causal relationship. A comparison of Ray's fluid thioglycollate medium (RFTM)-based and PCR-based detection assays highlight differences in detection capabilities related to the quantity and type of tissue processed rather than assay sensitivity per se, a point that should be considered when surveying populations for disease prevalence. Investigators are further cautioned to use care when applying and interpreting diagnostic assays when used with novel species.  相似文献

1. Large-scale habitat use of eight species of breeding birds was considered using data collected across Britain. The species were skylark Alauda arvensis (L.), dunnock Prunella modularis (L.), blackbird Turdus merula (L.), song thrush Turdus philomelos (L.), starling Sturnus vulgaris (L.), linnet Carduelis cannabina (L.), bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula (L.) and reed bunting Emberiza schoeniclus (L.). All are linked by roughly synchronous population declines over the last 25 years in southern Britain (and mostly in farmland landscapes). Discussion is limited to the conservation status of these species.
2. Breeding densities were estimated for broad habitat types and these were used to estimate population sizes within habitat types. Confidence limits on the estimates were derived using a bootstrap procedure.
3. For most species considered, farmland holds a high proportion of their population (in excess of 50% for four species), reflecting the predominance of this land use across Britain. This suggests that sympathetic changes in farming practices are likely to provide the best mechanism for improving the status of these species.
4. Substantial proportions of particular species occur outside farmland, but different species occur in different habitats. A considerable proportion of skylarks occur on upland moor, bullfinches in wooded habitats, and reed buntings in riparian habitats. Conservation of this group of species thus requires appropriate management of the wider countryside, including their main habitats.
5. Habitats associated with human habitation hold > 20% of the British populations of blackbird, song thrush and starling, and considerable numbers of other species. The management of parks, gardens and other 'green space' may have an important impact on their populations and should not be neglected by conservationists.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The immature stages of the craneflies Lipsothrix nigrilinea and L. fenderi are spent in galleries within decayed red alder ( Atntts rtibra ), in low order streams of the Pacific Northwest. L. fenderi also occurs in some coniferous wood and wood in semi-terrestrial sites at stream margins. Larvae of both species feed on the wood and are important degraders of this material.
2. The immature stages are briefly described and behaviour of the two species is compared.
3. L. nigrilinea has a predominantly biennial life cycle. It emerges from April to August in response to receding water level. The absence of this cue results in an extension of the life span to 3 or more years. The non-deterministic life cycle results in high variability of juvenile and adult weights.
4. L. fenderi is basically a biennial species, with a more synchronized autumn emergence. A portion of the population may emerge after 1 year if oviposition occurs early enough to allow autumnal growth of larvae or if growth is relatively rapid.
5. The extended life cycle of Lipsothrix spp. and the broad emergence of L. nigrilinea are concluded to be adaptations to a habitat/resource which is relatively stable and allows long-term association.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The first adult appearance of two insect species, the honey bee Apis mellifera (L.) and the small white Pieris rapae (L.), was examined between 1952 and 2004 in Spain.
2. After factoring out the variability resulting from the broad geographical and topographical range of the 798 sampling localities, multiple regression models were used to detect temporal trends in phenology.
3. The best models were repeated, including spring temperature as the explanatory variable to examine the effects of climate on appearance phenology.
4. Both species showed similar temporal trends, delaying their appearance phenology until the mid-1970s and advancing it since that time.
5. The appearance times for both species were negatively related to mean temperature between February and April, with both species appearing earlier in years with warmer springs.
6. The strong dependence of appearance dates on temperature indicates that climatic fluctuations are primarily responsible for the inter-annual variability in spring appearance phenology of both species, and consequently account for the observed long-term trends.
7. This study demonstrates that insect phenology is an accurate and sensitive bioindicator of climate change.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A survey was made of the distribution of Lonchopteridae over 2 years at forty sites in northern England. Material was collected by pitfall trapping.
2. Two species, Lonchoptera lutea and L.furcata , were taken in approximately similar numbers. No other species were recorded.
3. Considerable separation of the two species was found, with both species occurring at ten sites, whilst one species only was taken at twenty-five sites. L.furcata occurred coinrnonly on upland mineral sods, shallow peat soils and on lowland bogs whilst L.lutea was numerically most abundant on upland blanket bog.
4. Almost 39% of the L.lutea specimens and 14% of the L.furcata captures were males.
5. The capture of numbers of males of L.furcata is unusual, since the species is regarded as being parthenogenetic and males occur only in a very small part of the species' range. Confirmation of the association between the males and females of L.furcata is given, whilst there is close agreement between the cliaetotaxy of British males and females, and British and continental European females. The suggestion that the males belong to an undescribed species is rejected.
6. The seasonal capture of L.lutea adults is similar at all altitudes. Captures of males of L.furcata show an abrupt seasonal change above and below about 420 m; captures being in mid-summer in the higher altitude zone and between October and December at lower altitudes. The captures of females of L.furcata show the same trend, but this is partially obscured by the longer life-span of the females. It is suggested that this difference represents a change in the lifecycle, possibly from an annual to a biannual one at the higher altitudes.
7. The biology and distribution of the Lonchopteridae at low altitudes requires investigation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. An outdoor cage experiment was conducted to test the theory that localized interactions facilitate coexistence of species breeding in ephemeral habitats. The same amount of larval resource (50 g of liver) but divided into one, two, four, eight or sixteen pieces was placed into each of fifteen cages once a week from June to September for 4 years.
2. The cage populations were initially mixtures of thirteen species but after 4 years only Lucilia illustris (Meig.), Sarcophaga scoparia Pand. and S.aratrix Pand. remained. Lucilia illustris , by far the most abundant species in the field, predominated in every cage.
3. Sarcophaga went extinct in most cages, but they survived in five cages in which the larval resource was much divided, in agreement with the theoretical prediction.
4. Lucilia silvarum (Meig.) emerged about a week later than L.illustris in early summer; this phenological difference gave rise to a competitive asymmetry between the two species. This difference appears to explain why L.silvarum went extinct in the cages in 3 years, and it may explain why L.silvarum has consistently been less abundant than L.illustris in the natural community.
5. Other differences in phenology, voltinism and rate of development in the flies are described, and such differences are suggested to facilitate regional coexistence of many species in seasonal environments.  相似文献

Here we report a novel clade of secondary endosymbionts associated with insects and other arthropods. Seed bugs of the genus Nysius (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) harbor the primary gammaproteobacterial symbiont Schneideria nysicola within a pair of bacteriomes in the abdomen. Our survey of Nysius species for their facultative bacterial associates consistently yielded a novel type of alphaproteobacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence in addition to those of Wolbachia. Diagnostic PCR survey of 343 individuals representing 24 populations of four Nysius species revealed overall detection rates of the alphaproteobacteria at 77.6% in Nysius plebeius, 87.7% in Nysius sp. 1, 81.0% in Nysius sp. 2, and 100% in Nysius expressus. Further survey of diverse stinkbugs representing 24 families, 191 species, and 582 individuals detected the alphaproteobacteria from an additional 12 species representing six families. Molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that the alphaproteobacteria from the stinkbugs form a distinct and coherent monophyletic group in the order Rickettsiales together with several uncharacterized endosymbionts from fleas and ticks. The alphaproteobacterial symbiont clade was allied to bacterial clades such as the endosymbionts of acanthamoebae, the endosymbionts of cnidarians, and Midichloria spp., the mitochondrion-associated endosymbionts of ticks. In situ hybridization and electron microscopy identified small filamentous bacterial cells in various tissues of N. plebeius, including the bacteriome and ovary. The concentrated localization of the symbiont cells at the anterior pole of oocytes indicated its vertical transmission route through host insect generations. The designation "Candidatus Lariskella arthropodarum" is proposed for the endosymbiont clade.  相似文献

1. Four nymphalid butterflies, Aglais urticae L., Inachis io L., Polygonia c-album L. and Vanessa atalanta L., share the same primary host plant, Urtica dioica L., but have different margins to their U.K. and European ranges. Their developmental responses to a series of constant temperatures were measured.
2. Degree-day requirements were found broadly to explain the relative distributions and differences in voltinism of A. urticae , P. c-album and I. io . The migrant V. atalanta did not fit into the predicted pattern, and this species may be more limited by its ability to overwinter.
3. Although the most northerly distributed species, A. urticae , had the lowest degree-day requirement, it had the highest developmental threshold and performed best (for mortality, pupal weight and relative growth rate) at high experimental temperatures. It is suggested that this may be due to the gregarious nature of its larvae and their possible ability to thermoregulate.
4. At southern margins, different distributional limits may be explained partly by larval gregariousness (a more northern trait) and maximum temperatures at which development is possible.
5. Limits to the distributions of these mobile species are at least partially explicable by the interaction of climatic patterns and thermal biology. A rapid response to climate change is predicted, and has already been observed in two of the species.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Larvae of the caddisfly Limnephilus externus grew faster than those of Nemotaulius hostilis in a permanent pond in southern Alberta.
2. We investigated whether this was due to more efficient food processing by L. externus , whether their growth coincided with high environmental temperatures, or whether they had the ability to choose and exploit higher quality food.
3. Of five foods used, protein content was highest in wheat flakes, similar in alder, bur-reed and willow leaves, and lowest in the moss Leptodictyum .
4. Both species grew faster and survived better on the wheat flakes, but there was no statistically significant difference between species on the same food when reared at 4 or 8°C in the laboratory.
5. At 16°C L. externus grew better than N. hostilis when fed wheat, but N. hostilis survived better on alder. Both species had higher survival and growth rates per day-degree at 8 and 4 than at 16°C.
6. Thus, faster growth rates of L. externtus in the field appear to be due simply to higher temperatures during the larval growth period. Indeed, N. hostilis had a significantly higher growth rate per day-degree in a field experiment.
7. In food preference experiments, L. externus chose wheat first, moss second, alder third, and willow last; N. hostilis chose alder first, bur-reed second, moss third, and wheat last.
8. Protein content, leaf texture, microbial conditioning, and an interaction between larval behaviours selecting for food quality and case materials, are potential factors that influence'food preference'results.  相似文献

1. The feeding rates, diet composition and diel periodicity in feeding activity among larvae of the damselfly Enallagma cyathigerum Charp., exposed to chemical, visual and mechanical stimuli from the predators Ranatra linearis (L.), Notonecta glauca L. and Rutilus rutilus (L.) were investigated.
2. In response to chemical cues produced by all the predator species, larvae reduced their rate of feeding significantly (especially on large, sedentary prey).
3. Small larvae reacted more strongly than large ones to the kairomone produced by N. glauca.
4. The fish kairomone induced a reduction in feeding activity during daylight hours only. This reaction was more intense than the reaction to non-chemical cues.
5. Observed predator-induced changes in diet composition, caused directly by reduced activity during feeding, are discussed as an antipredator behaviour of damselfly larvae.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Experiments with nestling blue tits Parus caeruleus L. examined the effects of feeding them 7-spot ladybird Coccinella septempunctata (L.), 2-spot ladybird Adalia bipunctata (L.) or controls Tenebrio sp.
2. A feeding rate of 51/3 7-spot ladybirds per day 'killed' nestlings within 2 days. Three of six nestlings fed at half this rate survived 4 days. In contrast, all experimental birds survived sixty-four 2-spot ladybirds fed over 4 days (equivalent by weight to the high 7-spot diet).
3. Nestlings fed 7-spot ladybirds also grew more slowly than birds fed 2-spot ladybirds. The latter birds showed no difference in weight gain from the controls although they begged more strongly for food.
4. Cadavers of birds fed 7-spot ladybirds showed evidence of severe liver damage.
5. The results indicate a substantial difference between the ladybird species in their toxicity to nestling blue tits. They support the hypothesis that 2-spot ladybirds are largely-edible, polymorphic Batesian mimics of well-protected, monomorphic species such as the 7-spot ladybird.  相似文献

1. The nature of the diet can affect the gut retention time of food consumed by an animal, and a theoretical framework has been developed to explain this in terms of optimal digestion rates. However, diets may differ in a number of different attributes, all of which may separately affect the optimal length of time that they are retained in the gut.
2. Here an attempt is made to elucidate which of these features are important in determining gut retention time of different fish species when fed to nine north Atlantic seabird species, and discuss the different potential optimization criteria for retention time in seabirds.
3. Retention times of Lesser Sandeel ( Ammodytes marinus Raitt.) were shortest, and this species was also rapidly broken down in vitro . Sprat ( Sprattus sprattus (L.)) took longer to be broken down in vitro than Whiting ( Merlangius merlangus (L.)), and also had a high energy and lipid content, which might be expected to result in slow digestion; yet retention times of the two species were similar.
4. Meal size also had an important effect on gut retention times, large meals being retained for longer in the gut than small meals, apparently because of an upper limit on the peak excretion rate.
5. Diet and meal-size related characteristics are important factors influencing prey profitability, prey selection and foraging patterns in seabirds.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Field and published data reveal that there are at least twenty-three species of phytophagous insects associated with Prunus padus L. in Britain. Most of these species occur on the tree between May and September. Interspecific competition does not appear to be severe.
2. There are a total of 196 species of phytophagous insects feeding upon the various tissues of P. avium, P. cerasifera, P. cerasus, P. domestica, P. laurocerasus, P. padus and P. spinosa.
3. A highly significant species (5)-distribution (A) relationship of the form In (S+l)=0.92 In A-2.19, was obtained for the Prunus species examined within Britain (excluding Ireland), i.e. the wider the distribution of the plant the greater the number of insect species associated with it.
4. However, critical analysis of the data indicate that P. padus does not support as many different insect species as expected.
5. Neither plant form nor age of establishment within the British Isles accounted for this discrepancy.
6. The possibility of using a plant's insect fauna to describe its relationship to other plants in the same genus is discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. We test the hypothesis that defoliation has short-term and long-term negative effects on performance of winter moth Operophtera brumata L. on two species of food plants: Garry oak ( Quercus garryana Dougl.) and apple ( Malus domesticus L.).
2. Pupal weight (and hence potential fecundity of females) decreased with increased defoliation in the current year on both tree species.
3. Pupal weight increased, however, with increased level of defoliation in the previous year.
4. Increased weight of pupae from larvae which had fed on previously defoliated trees may buffer population decline by increasing fecundity of moths in the next generation.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The juveniles of dace ( Leuciscus leuciscus (L.)) and roach ( Rtuihts rtuihis (L.)) and yearling minnows ( Phoxtnus phoxinus (L.)) exhibited generally similar patterns of feeding behaviour and preferences for particular prey types.
2. Factors affecting prey selection included predator and prey size, prey activity and environmental conditions.
3. All three species preferred prey sizes approximately 0.6x their maximum gape.
4. Prey motion was essential to induce attack, and prey were usually selected in proportion to their relative activities.
5. Specialization on one prey type was observed in still water, and was always directed at the most active prey type. In flowing water no specialization was observed, and size selection was suppressed in the juvenile fish. Yearling minnows, however, were size selective in both still and flowing water.
6. The presence of macrophyte cover did not significantly change the pattern of prey selection, but did reduce the predation rale.
7. These results are discussed in the context of previous studies of prey selection and optimal foraging.  相似文献

Aim  Lepidium latifolium (Brassicaceae; perennial pepperweed) is a noxious Eurasian weed invading riparian and wetland areas of the western USA. Understanding which sites are most susceptible to invasion by L. latifolium will allow more efficient management of this weed. We assessed the ability of advanced remote sensing techniques to develop habitat suitability models for L. latifolium .
Location  San Francisco Bay/Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, California, USA.
Methods  Lepidium latifolium distribution was mapped with hyperspectral image data of Rush Ranch Open Space Preserve, providing presence/absence data to train and validate habitat models. A high-resolution light detection and ranging digital elevation model was used to derive predictor environmental variables (distance to channel, distance to upland, elevation, slope, aspect and convexity). Aggregate decision tree models were used to predict the potential distribution of this species.
Results  Lepidium latifolium infested two zones: near the marshland–upland margin and along channels within the marsh. Topographical data, which are typically strongly correlated with wetland species distributions, were relatively unimportant to L. latifolium occurrence, although relevant microtopography information, particularly relative elevation, was subsumed in the distance to channel variable. The map of potential L. latifolium distribution reveals that Rush Ranch contains considerable habitat that it is susceptible to continued invasion.
Main conclusions  Lepidium latifolium invades relatively less stressful sites along the inundation and salinity gradients. Advanced remote sensing datasets were shown to be sufficient for species distribution modelling. Remote sensing offers powerful tools that deserve wider use in ecological research and management.  相似文献
