This experiment assessed the effects of training history on resurgence in three college students. Four-choice arbitrary-matching-to-sample trials occurred in two components of a multiple schedule. An A1 or A2 sample stimulus and four (B) comparison stimuli occurred on AB trials, and a C1 or C2 sample stimulus and four (D) comparison stimuli occurred on CD trials. By the end of training, accuracy and latency measures were comparable across separate discriminations, selecting B2 in the presence of A2 and selecting D2 in the presence of C2, despite a lengthier training correlated with the former discrimination. Next, in the presence of A2 and C2, respectively, responses to B2 and D2 were extinguished and responses to B3 and D3 were reinforced. These responses to B3 and D3 then were extinguished in a final condition. In this final condition, resurgence to B2 occurred for each participant, whereas resurgence to D2 occurred for only one participant. Thus, there was greater resurgence of the discrimination with the lengthier training history, despite the discriminations being similar in terms of accuracy and latency before extinction. This result, therefore, can be classified as a latent, or remote, behavioral history effect.  相似文献

The serial order in which events occur can be a signal for different outcomes and therefore might be a determinant of how an animal should respond. In this report, we propose a novel design for studying serial order learning in Pavlovian conditioning. In both Experiments 1a and 1b, hungry rats were trained with successively presented pairs of auditory and visual stimuli (e.g., A --> B) using four different stimuli (A-D). Four orders were paired with food (A --> B, B --> C, C --> D, D --> A) while the reversals were extinguished (B --> A, C --> B, D --> C, A --> D). An analysis of responding from the second element of each pair showed that the rats discriminated trial types that preceded food from those that did not. A replication of the effect using a completely counterbalanced design is described in Experiment 1b. These results suggest that rats can use the serial or temporal order of two sequentially presented non-overlapping elements as the basis for discrimination. Two associative accounts are suggested as possible mechanisms for solving the discrimination.  相似文献

Most experimental paradigms to study visual cognition in humans and non-human species are based on discrimination tasks involving the choice between two or more visual stimuli. To this end, different types of stimuli and procedures for stimuli presentation are used, which highlights the necessity to compare data obtained with different methods. The present study assessed whether, and to what extent, capuchin monkeys’ ability to solve a size discrimination problem is influenced by the type of procedure used to present the problem. Capuchins’ ability to generalise knowledge across different tasks was also evaluated. We trained eight adult tufted capuchin monkeys to select the larger of two stimuli of the same shape and different sizes by using pairs of food items (Experiment 1), computer images (Experiment 1) and objects (Experiment 2). Our results indicated that monkeys achieved the learning criterion faster with food stimuli compared to both images and objects. They also required consistently fewer trials with objects than with images. Moreover, female capuchins had higher levels of acquisition accuracy with food stimuli than with images. Finally, capuchins did not immediately transfer the solution of the problem acquired in one task condition to the other conditions. Overall, these findings suggest that – even in relatively simple visual discrimination problems where a single perceptual dimension (i.e., size) has to be judged – learning speed strongly depends on the mode of presentation.  相似文献

To study concept formation based on relations, adults were taught and tested on complex discriminations involving figures that varied in colors, forms, and orientations. In Experiment 1, participants learned to select figures with values A1 and B1 or values B1 and C1; thereafter, they consistently selected figures with values A1 and C1. Selections were based on the relations among the values, rather than on perceptual properties. Experiments 2 and 3 studied generalization with a matching-to-sample procedure: participants learned to select "yes" in the presence of the positive figures, such as A1B1, and "no" in the presence of the negative figures. Thereafter, all figures that resulted from combining three values of the three relevant dimensions were probed. Participants typically selected "yes" in the presence of the novel figures that had two or three values related to one another and selected "no" in the presence of the other figures. Finally, two participants learned a simple discrimination. They did not generalize responding to other figures with the same values; instead, their performance in the generalization test remained almost unaltered. Thus, the concept based on relations was not affected by the simple discrimination. These results showed some unique properties of the concept based on relations and challenge previous theories on concept formation.  相似文献

Pigeons trained to discriminate between either two differentodors or two different colored lights acquired their discriminationsat the same rate. When the discrimination problems were reversedwithin a modality, however, the birds using visual cues acquirednew discriminations more rapidly than in original learning (positivetransfer), whereas the birds using olfactory cues acquired thediscrimination reversal less rapidly. On subsequent reversals,pigeons in the visual task condition developed a successivediscrimination reversal set with repeated reversals of the stimuli,while those in the olfactory condition did not. In a secondexperiment designed to assess the acquisition of redundant cues,birds received additional training with visual and olfactorycues in compound as discriminative stimuli, and were then testedwith only visual or olfactory cues. Birds previously trainedwith odor attended to visual cues in the compound, whereas birdspreviously trained to discriminate between lights did not attendto odor cues until they were presented alone. These resultsdemonstrate that the selection of stimuli may play a crucialrole in the performance of successive discrimination reversalsand suggest that, in contrast to rats, birds selectively attendto visual over olfactory cues in discrimination learning.  相似文献

Bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) discrimination of targets with broadband reflectance spectra was tested using simultaneous viewing conditions, enabling an accurate determination of the perceptual limit of colour discrimination excluding confounds from memory coding (experiment 1). The level of colour discrimination in bumblebees, and honeybees (Apis mellifera) (based upon previous observations), exceeds predictions of models considering receptor noise in the honeybee. Bumblebee and honeybee photoreceptors are similar in spectral shape and spacing, but bumblebees exhibit significantly poorer colour discrimination in behavioural tests, suggesting possible differences in spatial or temporal signal processing. Detection of stimuli in a Y-maze was evaluated for bumblebees (experiment 2) and honeybees (experiment 3). Honeybees detected stimuli containing both green-receptor-contrast and colour contrast at a visual angle of approximately 5 degrees , whilst stimuli that contained only colour contrast were only detected at a visual angle of 15 degrees . Bumblebees were able to detect these stimuli at a visual angle of 2.3 degrees and 2.7 degrees , respectively. A comparison of the experiments suggests a tradeoff between colour discrimination and colour detection in these two species, limited by the need to pool colour signals to overcome receptor noise. We discuss the colour processing differences and possible adaptations to specific ecological habitats.  相似文献

观察条件必需氨基酸对放射损伤大鼠血浆蛋白的影响。以雄性Wistar大鼠 6 9只 ,普通饲料喂养 6天 ,随机分成A、B、C、D四组 ,A、B、C组各 2 0只、D组 9只。A、B、C三组动物均接受 6 .5Gy的γ线全身照射 ,D组动物不照射。照射后在A组饲料中添加 3%精氨酸 +5 %牛磺酸 +1%谷氨酰胺 ;B组饲料中添加与A组等氮量的甘氨酸 (10 .91% ) ;C组及D组仍喂普通饲料。照射后 7及 14天测血浆总蛋白、白蛋白、前白蛋白、纤维结合蛋白。结果显示A组在饲料摄入量、体重及血浆总蛋白、白蛋白、前白蛋白、纤维结合蛋白水平等方面均优于B组及C组。提示饲料中增加条件必需氨基酸含量可以改善进食 ,促进体重恢复及蛋白质合成 ,进而提高受照大鼠应激能力  相似文献

Genetic strategies for perturbing activity of selected neurons hold great promise for understanding circuitry and behavior. Several such strategies exist, but there has been no direct demonstration of reversible inactivation of mammalian neurons in vivo. We previously reported quickly reversible inactivation of neurons in vitro using expression of the Drosophila allatostatin receptor (AlstR). Here, adeno-associated viral vectors are used to express AlstR in vivo in cortical and thalamic neurons of rats, ferrets, and monkeys. Application of the receptor's ligand, allatostatin (AL), leads to a dramatic reduction in neural activity, including responses of visual neurons to optimized visual stimuli. Additionally, AL eliminates activity in spinal cords of transgenic mice conditionally expressing AlstR. This reduction occurs selectively in AlstR-expressing neurons. Inactivation can be reversed within minutes upon washout of the ligand and is repeatable, demonstrating that the AlstR/AL system is effective for selective, quick, and reversible silencing of mammalian neurons in vivo.  相似文献

Analyzing cerebral asymmetries in various species helps in understanding brain organization. The left and right sides of the brain (lateralization) are involved in different cognitive and sensory functions. This study focuses on dolphin visual lateralization as expressed by spontaneous eye preference when performing a complex cognitive task; we examine lateralization when processing different visual stimuli displayed on an underwater touch-screen (two-dimensional figures, three-dimensional figures and dolphin/human video sequences). Three female bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were submitted to a 2-, 3- or 4-, choice visual/auditory discrimination problem, without any food reward: the subjects had to correctly match visual and acoustic stimuli together. In order to visualize and to touch the underwater target, the dolphins had to come close to the touch-screen and to position themselves using monocular vision (left or right eye) and/or binocular naso-ventral vision. The results showed an ability to associate simple visual forms and auditory information using an underwater touch-screen. Moreover, the subjects showed a spontaneous tendency to use monocular vision. Contrary to previous findings, our results did not clearly demonstrate right eye preference in spontaneous choice. However, the individuals' scores of correct answers were correlated with right eye vision, demonstrating the advantage of this visual field in visual information processing and suggesting a left hemispheric dominance. We also demonstrated that the nature of the presented visual stimulus does not seem to have any influence on the animals' monocular vision choice.  相似文献

Pigeons were shown four chromatic stimuli simultaneously (A, B, C, D) in daily 15-min sessions. A free correction procedure was used: production of the series A→B→C resulted in food delivery and ended a trial, while incorrect colour pecks had no consequences. The learning criterion (five consecutive correct series) was not achieved after 50 sessions, although the number of correct responses increased progressively. From around session 10, birds produced primarily transitions between items B and C or A and C and repeats on items B and C (BC 35%, AC 15%, BB 10%, CC 25%). Despite the low rate of the previously acquired A→B transition (6%), its production was highly correlated with that of the A→B→C series. On the other hand, item C was predominantly pecked and a recency effect occurred for this item. These data extend previous findings indicating that acquisition of series in pigeons involves the formation of associative links between stimuli according to direct and indirect reinforcing values.  相似文献

20 normal subjects were submitted to seven auditory ERP paradigms in which they were required to count regularly presented cliks (A1, A2, A3), cliks presented in pseudorandom order (B) and in which they had to discriminate relevant from non relevant stimuli characterized by side of provenience (C1, C2) or intensity difference (D). In paradigms C and D a P 300 component was evoked. Age was significantly correlated with P 300 latency only in paradigm D. There was a significant relationship between differences in subjective feelings of difficulty or engagement in performing the counting tasks in C and D and P 300 latency.  相似文献

Four experiments in rats examined whether occasion setters and target CSs play qualitatively different roles in occasion-setting discriminations. Two visual occasion setters, A and B, signalled reinforcement of two auditory target CSs, x and y, with sucrose and oil (A…x→suc, B…y→oil, A-, B-, x-, y-); in addition two transfer CSs w and z were paired with sucrose and oil (w→suc, z→oil). When w and z were substituted for x and y (A…w, B…w, A…z, B…z) more responding was observed when both stimuli had been paired with the same outcome (Experiments 1 and 3a). No effect was observed when two visual "pseudo-occasion setters", C and D (paired with sucrose and oil in a trace relation to the US:C…→suc, D…→oil), were substituted for the occasion setters A and B (C…x, D…x, C…y, D…y; Experiments 2, 3b and 4). These results could not be explained in terms of Pavlovian summation: responding to combinations of Pavlovian CSs paired with same or different outcomes was either the same, or lower when both stimuli had been paired with the same outcome (Experiment 4). Implications of these results for theories of occasion setting and configural learning are discussed.  相似文献

Previous research has shown that after training simple discriminations (A1+/A2−, B1+/B2−), bringing these tasks under conditional control (J1–A1, J2–A2) leads to transfer of discriminative control (J1+/J2−) and to generalized matching on the basis of same discriminative functions (e.g. J1–B1, J2–B2). The same occurs when conditional discriminations are trained (D1–E1, D2–E2; F1–G1, F2–G2). When the subjects are then trained to demonstrate correct relations (D1–E1, D2–E2) when given X1 and to demonstrate incorrect relations when given X2 (XD–E), transfer of discriminative control (X1+/X2−) and generalized matching on the basis of same discriminative functions emerges (e.g. X1F1–G1, X2F1–G2). The present study investigated if these performances are dependent on the training and/or testing order. In Experiment 1, the lower-order contingency tasks were trained before the higher-order contingency tasks (A1+/A2−, B1+/B2− before J–A, and D–E, F–G before XD–E). Half the subjects received the J–B test before the more complex XF–G test (Condition A), while for the other subjects, this testing order was reversed (Condition B). Finally, all subjects received additional tests in which they were given the opportunity to demonstrate the discriminative properties of the J and X stimuli (J1+/J2−, X1+/X2−), and to match the A, J, and X stimuli with newly introduced stimuli of same discriminative properties (e.g. J1-POLITE, J2-RUDE). Experiment 2 was the same except that the training order was reversed (J–A before A1+/A2−, B1+/B2−, and XD–E before D–E, F–G). The results were affected by the training order but not by the testing order. Transfer of discriminative functions and generalized matching on the basis of same functions only occurred reliably when the lower-order contingency tasks were trained first. Controlling relations in the simple discrimination performances of capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) were studied in two experiments using a blank-comparison procedure. The main goal was to determine whether monkeys would (a) select an S+ stimulus if another stimulus was substituted for the S- (indicating a select-controlling relation) and (b) reject an S- if another stimulus was substituted for S+ (indicating a reject-controlling relation). In experiment 1, two simple simultaneous discriminations were established, one of which was reversed repeatedly until rapid reversal learning was exhibited. During subsequent probe tests, some behavior was consistent with select- and reject-controlling relations, but there was also substantial variability. To control the variability, the procedures of experiment 2 were designed to establish select- and reject-control relations directly by training with the blank-comparison procedure. On subsequent probe trials, new stimuli were substituted for the blank comparison. Both animals exhibited consistent, reliable select- and reject-controlling relations. These experiments are the first to employ the blank-comparison procedure with non-human subjects. They also demonstrate a reliable method for generating select- and reject-controlling relations for experimental study.  相似文献

Spatially directed attention strongly enhances visual perceptual processing. The metaphor of the "spotlight" has long been used to describe spatial attention; however, there has been considerable debate as to whether spatial attention must be unitary or may be split between discrete regions of space. This question was addressed here through functional MR imaging of human subjects as they performed a task that required simultaneous attention to two briefly displayed and masked targets at locations separated by distractor stimuli. These data reveal retinotopically specific enhanced activation in striate and extrastriate visual cortical representations of the two attended stimuli and no enhancement at the intervening representation of distractor stimuli. This finding of two spotlights was obtained within a single cortical hemisphere and across the two hemispheres. This provides direct evidence that spatial attention can select, in parallel, multiple low-level perceptual representations.  相似文献

The three main subtypes of dopamine D(1) receptor (D(1A), D(1B) and D(1C)) subtypes found in most vertebrate groups were generated by two major steps of gene duplications, early in evolution. To identify the functional characteristics contributing to conservation of these paralogous D(1) receptors in vertebrates, the pharmacological and functional properties of fish (Anguilla anguilla), amphibian (Xenopus laevis) and human receptors were systematically analysed in transfected cells. The ligand-binding parameters appeared essentially similar for orthologous receptors, but differed significantly among the subtypes. The D(1A) receptors from the three species displayed low intrinsic activity and a fast rate of agonist-induced desensitization. All the orthologous D(1B) receptors exhibited a similar desensitization time-course, but with smaller amplitude of decrease than D(1A) receptors, in agreement with their higher basal activity. In contrast, D(1C) receptors, which do not exist in mammals, have low intrinsic activity and exhibit only weak, but rapid, agonist-induced desensitization, without any changes upon longer treatment with agonist. Thus, each of the three D(1) receptor subtypes are characterized by activation and desensitization properties, in a sequence-specific manner, which has been probably acquired early after gene duplications, and constrained their conservation during vertebrate evolution. These properties have been instrumental to adapt dopamine system to the physiology of the numerous neuronal networks and functions they control in the large and complex brains of vertebrates.  相似文献

Assessment of transdiaphragmatic pressure in humans   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Maximal force developed by the diaphragm at functional residual capacity is a useful index to establish muscle weakness; however, great disparity in its reproducibility can be observed among reports in the literature. We evaluated five maneuvers to measure maximal transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdimax) in order to establish best reproducibility and value. Thirty-five na?ve subjects, including 10 normal subjects (group 1), 12 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (group 2), and 13 patients with restrictive pulmonary disease (group 3), were studied. Each subject performed five separate maneuvers in random order that were repeated until reproducible values were obtained. The maneuvers were Mueller with (A) and without mouthpiece (B), abdominal expulsive effort with open glottis (C), two-step (maneuver C combined with Mueller effort) (D), and feedback [two-step with visual feedback of pleural (Ppl) and abdominal (Pab) pressure] (E). The greatest reproducible Pdimax values were obtained with maneuver E (P less than 0.01) (group 1: 180 +/- 14 cmH2O). The second best maneuvers were A, B, and D (group 1: 154 +/- 25 cmH2O). Maneuver C produced the lowest values. For all maneuvers, group 1 produced higher values than groups 2 and 3 (P less than 0.001), which were similar. The Ppl to Pdi ratio was 0.6 in maneuvers A and B, 0.4 in D and E, and 0.2 in C. We conclude that visual feedback of Ppl and Pab helped the subjects to elicit maximal diaphragmatic effort in a reproducible fashion. It is likely that the great variability of values in Pdimax previously reported are the result of inadequate techniques.  相似文献

Auditory evoked brain potentials (AEP) were recorded from nine healthy male subjects during three types of condition: A - subject and visual field stationary; B - subject vibrated (z-axis, 0.6 Hz, 1.85 ms-2 rms), visual field stationary; C - subject stationary, visual field vibrated (as for B). The visual surround was confined to a checkerboard pattern in front of the subject. Auditory stimuli (1000 Hz, 86 dB, interstimulus interval 7 s) were delivered via headphones to evoke AEP. Vibration-synchronous activity in the EEG was eliminated by a subtraction technique. In comparison with condition A, conditions B and C caused an attenuation of P2 and N1P2 components of AEP together with an increased latency of N1. Effects of conditions B and C did not differ. Direct vestibular stimulation and mechanisms specific for whole-body vibration were rejected as modes of action. The AEP-changes and the subjective evaluation of experimental conditions, arousal and performance, as well as symptoms of kinetosis (motion sickness) suggest a sensory mismatch, leading to a "latent kinetosis" with de-arousal, as the dominating mechanism by which the processing of information was affected. This suggestion was supported by an additional pilot study. Under real working conditions a similar effect can be expected during relative motion between the driver and his visual surround, i.e. even with perfect vibro-isolation of the driver's seat.  相似文献

Visual event-related potentials to moving stimuli: normative data   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Visual cognitive responses (P300) to moving stimuli were tested in 36 subjects with the aim to find the normal range of P300 parameters. Concomitantly, the circadian intra-individual variability of the P300 was studied in a subgroup of 6 subjects. Visual stimuli consisted of either coherent (frequent stimulus) or non-coherent motion (random stimulus). The oddball paradigm was applied for recording cognitive responses. P300 to rare stimuli had an average latency of 447.3 +/- 46.6 ms and amplitude of 12.9 +/- 6.0 microV. The average reaction time was in the range from 322 to 611 ms and there was no correlation between the reaction time and P300 latency. We did not find any significant circadian changes of the P300 parameters in the 6 subjects tested four times during the same day. Cognitive (event-related) responses (P300) displayed distinctly greater inter-individual variability (S.D. of 50 ms) when compared with pattern-reversal and motion-onset VEPs (S.D. of 6.0 ms and 14 ms, respectively). For this reason, the clinical use of P300 elicited by this kind of visual stimuli seems to be rather restricted and the evaluation of its intra-individual changes is preferable.  相似文献
