The continuously increasing usage of cell phones has raised concerns about the adverse effects of microwave radiation (MWR) emitted by cell phones on health. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have claimed that MWR may cause various kinds of damage in tissues. The aim of this study is to examine the possible effects of exposure to low‐intensity MWR on DNA and oxidative damage in the livers of rats. Eighteen Sprague–Dawley male rats were divided into three equal groups randomly (n = 6). Group 1 (Sham‐control): rats were kept under conditions the same as those of other groups, except for MWR exposure. Group 2: rats exposed to 1800 MHz (SAR: 0.62 W/kg) at 0.127 ± 0.04 mW/cm2 power density, and Group 3: rats exposed to 2,100 MHz (SAR: 0.2 W/kg) at 0.038 ± 0.03 mW/cm2 power density. Microwave application groups were exposed to MWR 2 h/day for 7 months. At the end of the exposure period, the rats were sacrificed and DNA damage, malondialdehyde (MDA), 8‐hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8‐OHdG), and total oxidant‐antioxidant parameter analyses were conducted in their liver tissue samples. It was found that 1800 and 2100 MHz low‐intensity MWR caused a significant increase in MDA, 8‐OHdG, total oxidant status, oxidative stress index, and comet assay tail intensity (P < 0.05), while total antioxidant status levels (P < 0.05) decreased. The results of our study showed that whole‐body exposure to 1800 and 2100 MHz low‐intensity MWR emitted by cell phones can induce oxidative stress by altering oxidant‐antioxidant parameters and lead to DNA strand breaks and oxidative DNA damage in the liver of rats. The aim of this study was to investigate effect of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted from mobile phones on DNA damage in follicle cells of hair in the ear canal. The study was carried out on 56 men (age range: 30–60 years old)in four treatment groups with n = 14 in each group. The groups were defined as follows: people who did not use a mobile phone (Control), people use mobile phones for 0–30 min/day (second group), people use mobile phones for 30–60 min/day (third group) and people use mobile phones for more than 60 min/day (fourth group). Ear canal hair follicle cells taken from the subjects were analyzed by the Comet Assay to determine DNA damages. The Comet Assay parameters measured were head length, tail length, comet length, percentage of head DNA, tail DNA percentage, tail moment, and Olive tail moment. Results of the study showed that DNA damage indicators were higher in the RFR exposure groups than in the control subjects. In addition, DNA damage increased with the daily duration of exposure. In conclusion, RFR emitted from mobile phones has a potential to produce DNA damage in follicle cells of hair in the ear canal. Therefore, mobile phone users have to pay more attention when using wireless phones.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the role of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in smoker and nonsmoker male CVD patients (n = 457) of two age groups (31–45) and (46–60). The both elements were determined in biological samples (scalp hair, blood, and urine) of CVD patients and healthy referents for comparison purpose. The concentrations of Zn and Cd were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer prior to microwave-assisted acid digestion. It was observed that the mean values of Cd were significantly higher in the biological samples of smokers CVD as compared to nonsmoker CVD patients, while the level of Zn was lower in both smoker and nonsmoker patients. The concentrations of Zn in whole blood and scalp hair samples were lower in CVD patients as compared to referents (p > 0.001). Results showed significant changes of levels of Cd and Zn in blood and scalp hair samples of CVD patients when compared with healthy referents, while reverse in the case of urine samples. It was observed that low Zn levels were associated with both smoker and nonsmoker CVD patients, while increased cadmium accumulation was observed in smoker patients as compared to nonsmoker patients (p > 0.025).  相似文献

This study compared food insecurity, nutritional status (as measured through anthropometry and dietary intake), and food preparation patterns of low-income Puerto Rican female out-of-treatment drug users with that of low-income Puerto Rican women who reported no drug use. A convenience sample of 41 drug users was compared with 41 age-matched non-drug-users from inner-city Hartford, Connecticut. A culturally appropriate food frequency questionnaire was administered and anthropometric measurements were taken. The findings suggest a high degree of poverty among all study participants, but in particular among drug users. Drug users were more likely than the controls to be food insecure (P < 0.05) and to be exposed to increasingly severe food sufficiency problems. The daily frequency of consumption of vegetables was lower (P = 0.03) for drug users than non-drug-users. Conversely, the frequency of consumption for sweets/ desserts was significantly higher for drug users than the controls (P = 0.0001). Drug users, who were classified as food insecure were less likely to consume vegetables (P = 0.004) and fish (P = 0.03) than were controls who were food insecure. When comparing drug users with controls, the former group reported consuming fewer meals during a usual week than the latter group (P < 0.0001). Drug users were more likely to fry foods (P = 0.02) while the controls were more likely to bake (P = 0.005), boil (P = 0.02), and steam (P = 0.002) foods. All anthropometric measurements, except for height, were significantly lower for drug users. The results show that drug users generally maintain poorer nutritional status than non-drug-users. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) with the risk of gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Genotypes were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment-length polymorphism method in 592 patients and 624 healthy individuals. Significant differences in allele and genotype distributions of MMP-2 -1306C → T SNP were observed between ESCC and controls (P = 0.02 and 0.01, respectively). Compared with the C/T + T/T genotypes, C/C genotype significantly increased the risk of ESCC (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.10–2.23), especially in individuals in smoker group and in the group with positive family history. The stratification analysis showed there were risk changes of GCA for -735C/C genotype carrier in nonsmoker, for MMP-12 -82G allele and MMP-13 -77A/G genotype carrier in smoker. Our study indicated that these four functional polymorphisms might play roles in developing ESCC and GCA in high incidence region of North China.  相似文献

Modern mobile phones emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs) ranging from 900 to 2000 MHz which are suggested to have an influence on well-being, attention and neurological parameters in mobile phone users. To date most studies have investigated Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)-EMF and only very few studies were concerned with Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)-EMF. Consequently, we tested the effects of both types of EMF, 1950 MHz UMTS (SAR 0.1 and 1 W/kg) and pulsed 900 MHz GSM (1 W/kg), on well-being and vigilance-controlled resting electroencephalogram (eyes closed) in 15 healthy, right-handed subjects. A double-blind, randomised, crossover application of the test procedure was used. Neither the UMTS- nor the GSM-EMF produced any significant changes in the measured parameters compared to sham exposure. The results do not give any evidence for a deleterious effect of the EMF on normal healthy mobile phone users.  相似文献

Pulsed radio frequency, (RF), electromagnetic radiation from common GSM mobile phones, (Global System for Mobile Telecommunications) with a carrier frequency at 900 MHz, “modulated” by human voice, (speaking emission) decreases the reproductive capacity of the insect Drosophila melanogaster by 50%–60%, whereas the corresponding “nonmodulated” field (nonspeaking emission) decreases the reproductive capacity by 15%–20%. The insects were exposed to the near field of the mobile phone antenna for 6 min per day during the first 2–5 days of their adult lives. The GSM field is found to affect both females and males. Our results suggest that this field-radiation decreases the rate of cellular processes during gonad development in insects.  相似文献

Studies of hypocalcemia and osteoporosis frequently encountered in heavy users of alcohol have previously been performed on alcoholic people who have already recovered from alcohol intoxication. Bone and mineral metabolism during and after the intoxication may be different. We measured serum parameters of bone and mineral metabolism in 26 alcohol-intoxicated men and in 19 healthy control men. Although serum ionized calcium was 12% (P < 0.0001) lower in the patients than in the controls, serum intact parathyroid hormone was similar in the study groups. As reflected by decreased serum levels of osteocalcin (−43%; P < 0.001), bone formation was depressed in the patients. Serum cross-linked carboxyterminal telopeptide of human type I collagen (ICTP), a novel parameter of bone matrix degradation, was 9% higher in the patients (P = 0.03) than controls. The positive correlation between serum osteocalcin and ICTP in the controls (r = 0.59, P < 0.01) was absent in the patients (r = 0.05, P = 0.8). We conclude that in alcohol-intoxicated alcohol users, the parathyroid glands do not respond normally to a hypocalcemic stimulus, and that depressed bone formation is uncoupled from accelerated bone resorption.  相似文献

Schizophrenia is a common complex mental disorder. The lifetime prevalence of this disease is about 1% across different populations. The etiology is still unknown despite decades of intensive study. This report is aimed at studying the relationship between chromosomal fragile sites and the etiology of schizophrenia. Lymphocytes of 72 schizophrenic patients and 66 healthy controls were cultured in M medium, which is deficient in folic acid, and in medium RPMI1640 with distamycin A. G-banding was carried out on 100 metaphases of each individual. Fragile sites were characterized as specific chromosomal bands that exhibit nonrandom gaps or breaks. Culture in M medium resulted in significant differences in the total number of chromosomal lesions and the total number of cells with chromosomal lesions between patients and controls (P<0.001), while no difference was noted after exposure to distamycin A. In the case of M medium, 17 bands in both patients and controls were recognized as expressing fragile sites nonrandomly using a statistical method based on the relationship of the binomial and F distributions. Further analysis using Fisher’s exact test revealed a significant excess of expression of a rare fragile site at 2q11.2 among patients compared with controls (P<0.05). In the case of distamycin A induction, 13 bands were identified as having nonrandom expression of fragile sites using the same statistical method. A significant excess expression of a fragile site at 9q12 was identified among patients compared with controls by applying Fisher’s exact test (P<0.001). Thus, our data suggest that chromosomal bands 2q11.2 and 9q12 are interesting regions that may harbor important genes associated with schizophrenia. X-ray radiation is detrimental to human cells and may lead to development of life-threatening diseases. Cigarette paper and cigarette smoke contain toxic elements, whereas vitamins C and E (VCE) may have regulator effects on the elements. We investigated effects of VCE administration on X-ray-induced element changes in blood of smoker and nonsmoker X-ray technicians. Twenty technicians and 30 healthy age-matched control subjects were used in the study. Ten of the X-ray technicians and 15 of the control were smokers. Blood serum samples were taken from the control. Oral vitamins C (500 mg) and E (150 mg) were supplemented daily to the smoker and nonsmoker X-ray technicians for 5 weeks. Serum samples were taken from the X-ray technicians before and after 5 weeks. Copper, zinc, selenium, aluminum, iron, magnesium, and calcium levels were investigated in control and X-ray technicians, both smokers and nonsmokers. Copper, zinc, and selenium levels were lower in the total X-ray group and smoker X-ray group than in control and nonsmoker X-ray group, although iron, magnesium, and calcium levels were higher in X-ray group than in control. The copper, zinc, selenium, and aluminum levels were higher in the VCE treatment group than those in X-ray group, although magnesium and calcium levels were decreased by the treatment. The serum zinc, copper, selenium, and magnesium levels were lower in smoker control group when compared to nonsmoker control group. The serum zinc levels were lower in smoker X-ray group than nonsmoker X-ray group, although iron level was higher in smoker X-ray group than in nonsmoker X-ray group. VCE prevents the smoke and X-ray-induced selenium, zinc, magnesium, and copper decrease to strengthen the antioxidant trace element levels in the serum of the technicians.  相似文献

Chromosomal damage and apoptosis were analyzed in users of mouthwash and/or alcoholic beverages, using the micronucleus test on exfoliated oral mucosa cells. Samples from four groups of 20 individuals each were analyzed: three exposed groups (EG1, EG2 and EG3) and a control group (CG). EG1 comprised mouthwash users; EG2 comprised drinkers, and EG3 users of both mouthwashes and alcoholic beverages. Cell material was collected by gently scraping the insides of the cheeks. Then the cells were fixed in a methanol/acetic acid (3:1) solution and stained and counterstained, respectively, with Schiff reactive and fast green. Endpoints were computed on 2,000 cells in a blind test. Statistical analysis showed that chromosomal damage and apoptosis were significantly higher in individuals of groups EG1 and EG3 than in controls (p < 0.005 and p < 0.001, respectively). No significant difference in chromosomal damage and apoptosis was observed between the exposed groups. In EG2, only the occurrence of apoptosis was significantly higher than in the controls. These results suggest that mouthwashes alone or in association with alcoholic drinks induce genotoxic effects, manifested as chromosomal damage and apoptosis. They also suggest that alcoholic drinks are effective for stimulating the process of apoptosis. However, these data need to be confirmed in larger samples.  相似文献

Recently, many studies have been carried out in relation to 900 MHz radiofrequency radiation (RF) emitted from a mobile phone on the brain. However, there is little data concerning possible mechanisms between long-term exposure of RF radiation and biomolecules in brain. Therefore, we aimed to investigate long-term effects of 900 MHz radiofrequency radiation on beta amyloid protein, protein carbonyl, and malondialdehyde in the rat brain. The study was carried out on 17 Wistar Albino adult male rats. The rat heads in a carousel were exposed to 900 MHz radiofrequency radiation emitted from a generator, simulating mobile phones. For the study group (n: 10), rats were exposed to the radiation 2 h per day (7 days a week) for 10 months. For the sham group (n: 7), rats were placed into the carousel and the same procedure was applied except that the generator was turned off. In this study, rats were euthanized after 10 months of exposure and their brains were removed. Beta amyloid protein, protein carbonyl, and malondialdehyde levels were found to be higher in the brain of rats exposed to 900 MHz radiofrequency radiation. However, only the increase of protein carbonyl in the brain of rats exposed to 900 MHz radiofrequency radiation was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.001).

In conclusion, 900 MHz radiation emitted from mobile/cellular phones can be an agent to alter some biomolecules such as protein. However, further studies are necessary.  相似文献

Ubiquitous and ever increasing use of mobile phones led to the growing concern about the effects of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted by cell phones on biological systems. The aim of this study is to explore whether long-term RFR exposure at different frequencies affects DNA damage and oxidant-antioxidant parameters in the blood and brain tissue of rats. 28 male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into four equal groups (n = 7). They were identified as Group 1: sham-control, Group 2: 900 MHz, Group 3: 1800 MHz, and Group 4: 2100 MHz. Experimental groups of rats were exposed to RFR 2 h/day for 6 months. The sham-control group of rats was subjected to the same experimental condition but generator was turned off. Specific absorption rates (SARs) at brain with 1 g average were calculated as 0.0845 W/kg, 0.04563 W/kg, and 0.03957, at 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz, respectively. Additionally, malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), total antioxidant status (TAS), and total oxidant status (TOS) analyses were conducted in the brain tissue samples. Results of the study showed that DNA damage and oxidative stress indicators were found higher in the RFR exposure groups than in the sham-control group. In conclusion, 900-, 1800-, and 2100-MHz RFR emitted from mobile phones may cause oxidative damage, induce increase in lipid peroxidation, and increase oxidative DNA damage formation in the frontal lobe of the rat brain tissues. Furthermore, 2100-MHz RFR may cause formation of DNA single-strand breaks.  相似文献

Aim: The aim of this article was to explore the hypothesis that non-thermal, weak, radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) have an effect on living plants. Subject and methods: In this study, we performed an analysis of the data extracted from the 45 peer-reviewed scientific publications (1996–2016) describing 169 experimental observations to detect the physiological and morphological changes in plants due to the non-thermal RF-EMF effects from mobile phone radiation. Twenty-nine different species of plants were considered in this work. Results: Our analysis demonstrates that the data from a substantial amount of the studies on RF-EMFs from mobile phones show physiological and/or morphological effects (89.9%, p < 0.001). Additionally, our analysis of the results from these reported studies demonstrates that the maize, roselle, pea, fenugreek, duckweeds, tomato, onions and mungbean plants seem to be very sensitive to RF-EMFs. Our findings also suggest that plants seem to be more responsive to certain frequencies, especially the frequencies between (i) 800 and 1500 MHz (p < 0.0001), (ii) 1500 and 2400 MHz (p < 0.0001) and (iii) 3500 and 8000 MHz (p = 0.0161). Conclusion: The available literature on the effect of RF-EMFs on plants to date observed the significant trend of radiofrequency radiation influence on plants. Hence, this study provides new evidence supporting our hypothesis. Nonetheless, this endorses the need for more experiments to observe the effects of RF-EMFs, especially for the longer exposure durations, using the whole organisms. The above observation agrees with our earlier study, in that it supported that it is not a well-grounded method to characterize biological effects without considering the exposure duration. Nevertheless, none of these findings can be directly associated with human; however, on the other hand, this cannot be excluded, as it can impact the human welfare and health, either directly or indirectly, due to their complexity and varied effects (calcium metabolism, stress proteins, etc.). This study should be useful as a reference for researchers conducting epidemiological studies and the long-term experiments, using whole organisms, to observe the effects of RF-EMFs.  相似文献

Cigarette smoking leads to uptake of a multitude of reactive chemicals including many electrophiles and may also give rise to oxidative stress. Human red blood cells are important targets for electrophilic and oxidant foreign compounds. We investigated the oxidative stress in erythrocytes upon cigarette smoking, and the response of antioxidant defense system against it. With this aim, simultaneous determination of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), selenium dependent glutathione peroxidase (Se-GPx), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities and plasma levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and the degree of erythrocyte membrane lipid peroxidation (EMLP) were carried out in blood samples of smokers and their controls. Plasma TBARS levels and EMLP in smokers were significantly higher than the control levels (p < 0.01 and p < 0.005, respectively). SOD activity was diminished in smokers compared to nonsmoker controls (p < 0.005). Erythrocyte Se-GPx activity was also found significantly diminished in smokers (p < 0.005), while plasma Se-GPx activity was not changed. We observed that erythrocyte CAT activity was not different in smokers compared to nonsmoker controls. We found that the erythrocyte GST activity is significantly lower in young adult smokers (3.03 +/- 0.18 U/mg protein; mean +/- SEM; n = 46) than in nonsmoking contemporaries (3.98 +/- 0.26 U/mg protein; mean +/- SEM; n = 41). Together with previously reported data, it can be concluded that the decrease in GST activity leads to extra GST synthesis during erythrocyte proliferation. The same data were also analyzed for the sex differences. The statistically significant differences remained the same between nonsmoker and smoker females. Only EMLP degree and SOD activity were significantly different between nonsmoker and smoker males; however, when compared the parameters between male and female nonsmokers, GST activity was found to be significantly higher in females than that of males.  相似文献

The incidence of hypertension has been associated to cigarette smoking and consumption of alcohol. In the present study, trace and toxic elements were determined in scalp hair of patients diagnosed with hypertension who are smokers and habitual alcohol drinkers living in Dublin, Ireland. These results were compared with age- and sex-matched healthy, nonsmokers, nondrinking controls. The concentrations of trace and toxic elements were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The validity and accuracy of the methodology were checked using certified reference material (NCS ZC 81002b) and by the conventional wet acid digestion method on the same certified reference material and on real samples. The recovery of all the studied elements was found to be in the range of 97.5%–99.7% in certified reference material. The results of this study showed that the mean values of cadmium, copper, iron, nickel and lead were significantly higher in scalp hair samples of both smoker and nonsmoker hypertensive patients than referents (P < 0.001); whereas, the concentration of zinc was lower in the scalp hair samples of hypertensive patients of both genders. The deficiency of zinc and the high exposure of trace and toxic metals as a result of cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption may be synergistic with risk factors associated with hypertension.  相似文献

Widespread use of mobile phones has increased the human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). It is required to investigate the effect of EMFs on the biological systems. In this paper the effect of mobile phone RF (910 MHz and 940 MHz) on structure and function of HbA was investigated. Oxygen affinity was measured by sodium dithionite with UV–vis spectrophotometer. Structural changes were studied by circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results indicated that mobile phone EMFs altered oxygen affinity and tertiary structure of HbA. Furthermore, the decrease of oxygen affinity of HbA corresponded to the EMFs intensity and time of exposure.  相似文献

Plasma and erythrocytes lipid peroxidation (LP), reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, erythrocytes glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px), and plasma antioxidant vitamin concentrations were investigated in control and X‐ray technicians with smoker and nonsmoker. Plasma and erythrocytes LP levels were higher in the total X‐ray group and smoker X‐ray group than in control and nonsmoker X‐ray group, respectively although the LP level was decreased by the VCE treatment. The plasma vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, and β‐carotene concentrations were lower in the X‐ray group than in control although their concentrations were increased by the treatment. The erythrocytes GSH level and GSH‐Px activity were found to be higher in the treatment group than in the X‐ray group. Plasma GSH level was not found to be different in all group. Reactive oxygen species may play role in the mechanism that has been proposed to explain the biological side effect of X‐ray radiation and smoke. VCE prevents the smoke and X‐ray‐induced oxidative stress to strengthen antioxidant vitamin concentrations in the blood of the technicians. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The incidence of chromosomal anomalies in early bovine embryos derived from follicular oocytes fertilized in vitro using sperm separated by Percoll density gradient centrifugation was investigated. Overall, chromosomal anomalies were observed in 13.7% (138/1005) of embryos. There were 14 haploids (1.4%), 2 hypodiploids (0.2%), 6 hyperdiploids (0.6%), 101 triploids (10.0%), 12 tetraploids (1.2%), 2 diploid/triploid mosaics (0.2%), and 1 diploid/tetraploid mosaic (0.1%). The frequency of triploidy was caused mainly by polyspermy. There was a significant difference in the frequency of embryos with abnormal chromosomes between the two bulls used (P < 0.005), but Percoll centrifugation did not affect the observed incidence of anomalies. The frequency of chromosomal anomalies in embryos at each stage increased with delay or arrest of development. These results suggest that the incidence of chromosomal anomalies depended on the conditions of in vitro fertilization and the arrest of development.  相似文献
