The simultaneous hatching of Daphnia resting eggs from a number of different lakes and ponds using one set of hatching cues can be difficult to achieve as environmental conditions differ considerably between water bodies. Therefore, optimal hatching conditions for ephippial eggs originating from shallow temporary waters may differ from those found in large lakes. The aim of our study was to compare the optimal thermal conditions for hatching ephippial eggs of Daphnia found in permanent lakes and those from shallow temporary ponds. We used ephippial eggs of Daphnia from the longispina species complex originating from two temporary city ponds and two deep lakes in Poland. The ephippia were protected against overheating at all stages of the field and laboratory work to prevent activation or killing of the eggs. After a refractory period (imposed storage in cool and dark conditions), ephippia were incubated at six different temperatures (6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 °C) under a 16:8 L:D light regime. Our results indicate that hatching of resting eggs of Daphnia that inhabit lakes or ponds may require different thermal conditions. The hatching success of ephippial eggs originating from temporary waters was relatively high (30–56%) at all tested incubation temperatures, while for the ephippial eggs from the deep lakes it was lower (7–37%) and inversely related to water temperature. The divergent hatching responses of the ephippial eggs originating from temporary pools and lakes may reflect the typical thermal conditions during hatching in their native habitats. While in the deep lakes of the temperate zone Daphnia hatching typically occurs during the low water temperatures of early spring, in shallow ponds Daphnia hatching may occur throughout the year at varying water temperatures, from a few to over a dozen degrees Celsius.  相似文献

The occurrence of a resting egg phase in the life cycle of marine and freshwater planktonic copepods is well documented and receiving increasing attention by investigators. The species generally occur in coastal marine waters, freshwater ponds and lakes in areas that undergo strong seasonal fluctuations, though examples have been reported for tropical and sub-tropical areas not subject to such extreme fluctuations. Typically such species disappear from the water column for portions of the year, but remain in the region as benthic resting eggs. Studies to date have focused on the conditions that promote the occurrence of resting eggs, the factors that affect their survival and hatching from sediments, the existence of egg banks in sediments, and the impact of resting eggs on plankton community structure. Benthic resting eggs of copepods include diapause eggs as well as subitaneous (non-diapause) eggs that are quiescent due to conditions in the sediments. As with other groups of organisms the resting egg phase is viewed as being critical for the perpetuation of species year after year, especially those that disappear from the water column for portions of the year. Some data indicate that eggs can survive for many years in sediments which would expand their influence to evolutionary time scales. This paper summarizes our understanding of embryonic dormancy in marine copepods.  相似文献

Zooplankton egg banks are the accumulation of diapausing embryosof planktonic animals buried in the sediments of many aquaticecosystems. These eggs, which are analogous life history stagesto the seeds of many plants, can survive in a ready-to-hatchstate for periods ranging from a few years to greater than acentury. Their presence in ponds, lakes and near-shore marineenvironments has substantial implications for understandingtrajectories of ecological and evolutionary change. When thesediments of lakes are structured in historical sequence, diapausingeggs extracted from different sediment ages can provide a meansof studying past changes in community or population-geneticstructure. A completely different aspect of egg banks derivesfrom the fact that hatching of diapausing eggs can influence, through what can be thought of as temporal dispersal, populationand community response to environmental change. Eggs hatchingfrom diapause introduce to current environments species or genotypeslaid at times in the distant past. In addition, egg banks createextended generation overlap that can play an important rolein maintaining diversity in a fluctuating environment when differenttypes (species or genotypes) are favored at different times. These distinct aspects of egg banks (i.e., their direct impacton ecological and evolutionary processes versus their usefulnessin reconstructing historical changes), are potentially in conflictbecause for old eggs to hatch, the sediments must be at leastpartially mixed. This same mixing, however, degrades the accuracyof the historical record. Both aspects are possible, however, even within a single lake when sediment-mixing intensity isspatially heterogeneous.  相似文献

The maintenance of species and genetic diversity within zooplankton egg banks may be crucial to the re-establishment of zooplankton communities following historical disturbance, such as anthropogenic acidification which globally caused widespread damage to ecological communities. Despite this, no other study has described basic characteristics of zooplankton egg banks among lakes with different acidification histories, such as variation in resting egg concentration. Theoretically, habitats with frequent periods of harsh environmental conditions are expected to select for resting egg production or prolonged dormancy in zooplankton, which would increase the size of the resting egg bank in lake sediments. In this study, we compared abundances of viable and inviable calanoid copepod resting eggs among three freshwater lakes with different acidification histories. While Swan Lake underwent major chemical and biological changes from acid and metal deposition, Teardrop and Bat lakes were relatively unaffected by historical acidification and had comparatively constant, but different pH over time. We also tested the effect of age on the viability of resting eggs. As predicted, higher numbers of viable resting eggs were found in recent sediments from acid-recovering Swan Lake compared to study lakes with relatively temporally constant environments (Teardrop and Bat lakes) when the total number of eggs was held as a covariate. We detected this result in spite of similar pelagic abundances of Leptodiaptomus minutus, the dominant species in zooplankton communities of these lakes. This pattern did not necessarily hold for inviable egg concentrations since these eggs were more abundant in both Swan and Bat lakes compared to Teardrop Lake in older sediments (1939–1951, 1800s). Within study lakes, the abundance of viable resting eggs declined with increased egg age. Further study is required to test mechanisms underlying these patterns. Handling editor: S. I. 1. Reduction in diversity of both freshwater aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems has been attributed to salinity increase and such increases are a symptom of changes to land use. Hydrological alteration to ground and surface water are likely to be associated with salinity increase and its influence on biodiversity. However the combined effects of salinity and hydrology on aquatic biodiversity have not been elucidated fully in either field or experimental situations. 2. The effect of salinity and water regime on the biota in sediments from seven wetlands from inland south‐eastern Australia was tested experimentally using germination of aquatic plant seeds (five salinity and two water levels) and emergence of zooplankton eggs (five salinity levels). Salinity levels were <300, 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000 mg L?1 and water regimes were damp (waterlogged) and submerged. 3. Aquatic plant germination and zooplankton hatching was not consistent for all seven wetland sediments. Four of the wetland sediments, Narran Lakes, Gwydir Wetlands, Macquarie Marshes and Billybung Lagoon showed similar responses to salinity and water regime but the other three wetland sediments from Lake Cowal, Great Cumbung Swamp and Darling Anabranch did not. 4. As salinity increased above 1000 mg L?1 there was a decrease in the species richness and the abundance of biota germinating or hatching from sediment from four of the wetlands. 5. Salinity had a particularly strong effect in reducing germination from sediments in damp conditions when compared to the flooded conditions. In parallel, salts accumulated in the sediment in damp conditions but did not in flooded conditions. 6. There is potential for increasing salinity in freshwater rivers and wetlands to decrease the species richness of aquatic communities and thus of the wetland community as a whole, resulting in loss of wetland biodiversity. This reduction in diversity varies between wetlands and is at least partly related to hydrology. For aquatic plants the reduction in diversity will be more marked for plants germinating from seed banks at the edges of wetlands where plants are not completely submerged than for the same seed bank germinating in submerged conditions.  相似文献

Diapause dynamics of two diaptomid copepod species in a large lake   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Skistodiaptomus oregonensis and Leptodiaptomus minutus produce diapausing eggs in a large lake, Oneida Lake, in New York State. The timing of the switch from production of subitaneous (immediately hatching) eggs to diapausing eggs for both species is in October. This timing is consistent with a pattern, reviewed here, for other populations of diaptomid copepods: populations living in large lakes tend to begin production of diapausing eggs later in the season than those living in small lakes. Populations living in temporary ponds tend to switch still earlier in the season. All populations reviewed here live in the north temperate zone. The sediments of Oneida Lake contain densities of diaptomid diapausing eggs on the order of 105 m–2 per cm below the sediment surface down to 5 cm. Below this sediment depth, egg densities decline. The highest egg densities were found in sediments under the deepest water. Diapausing eggs of L. minutus survive in the sediments at least two years, as shown by the recovery of the population after a year in which no new diapausing eggs were produced, and probably for two or more decades. Long-term dormancy can have the effect of ensuring the continuation of a population through periods of poor recruitment, and can help create conditions for the coexistence of competing species. Other investigators have suggested that S. oregonensis and L. minutus are competitors in other lakes when they co-occur.  相似文献

To investigate their distribution and total numbers, resting eggs of the anostracan Chirocephalus ruffoi were collected from the bed of a temporary pool in southern Italy. Samples were taken at 0.5 m intervals along six transects oriented at 30° from each other, by means of a cylindrical core sampler. The horizontal distribution of intact resting eggs was extremely patchy, with cyst number per core ranging from 191 to 1,400 (CV = 32.7%), corresponding to a mean of between 0.8 and 4.3 cysts cm−3. Differences observed were related to core position and transect orientation, total cyst numbers being markedly higher in the leeward area of the pool compared to the windward area. Marked variation was also evident in vertical distribution, a significant, though weak correlation was recorded between egg density and sediment depth. Cyst‐bank size (± 95% confidence limits) of the pool bed, estimated from the mean cyst number cm−3 obtained for the 6 transects, ranged between 1.0 × 108 and 1.3 × 108 cysts. Hatching in the laboratory was very erratic. Despite significant differences in hatching, the observed variation was unrelated to most of the variables considered (position within sections, cores and transects, pre‐incubation treatment) and was explained only by initial sediment conditions (moist/dry). In none of the experimental conditions tested was synchronous hatching obtained. Possible causal factors (mixing of the bottom sediments by cattle, egg age, storage conditions, differential exposure to environmental cues as well as variability in hatching response even at clutch level) are discussed. The use of Artemia salina nauplii as live food has significantly aided culture of commercial fish and shrimps in recent years. However, reported deficiencies in the nutritional value of some strains originated the study of freshwater fairy shrimps as an alternative to Artemia. This study presents cyst biometry for Dendrocephalus geayi and D. spartaenovae (Anostraca: Thamnocephalidae), and the effects of some physicochemical variables on cyst hatching. The biometric characteristics of D. geayi and D. spartaenovae are within the size range of commercial Artemia strains. Favorable conditions to hatch D. geayi are 30 degrees C and conductivity near that of distilled water (<5 micromhos). For D. spartaenovae, these conditions are 28 degrees C and 280 micromhos. A very low salinity such as 1 per thousand inhibits hatching in both species.  相似文献

Some Permian, continental basins from Algeria, Morocco, France, Italy, Germany and Poland reveal algal remains and stromatolites, mainly during Lower Permian, but also during Middle and Upper Permian. The algae belong to 8 morphogenera and 12 morphospecies. Two species are new. The taxonomic attributions are difficult, even if some species resemble living species. The algae make unorganized masses, or laminated builtups (stromatolites, oncolites, oolites). Algal masses and stromatolites are contained in fluviatile sediments (active or abandoned channels) and lacustrine deposits (playas, ephemeral lakes shorelines, lakes several meters or decameters deep). Considering the sedimentological context, the water salinity could range from karstic springs (hard water) to evaporic ephemeral lakes (playas).  相似文献

Ships that enter the Great Lakes laden with cargo carry only residual ballast water and sediment in ballast tanks. These ships are designated ‘no ballast on board’ (NOBOB) and constitute > 90% of inbound traffic. We conducted in situ experiments using emergence traps to assess the viability and the introduction potential of invertebrate diapausing stages present in ships’ ballast sediment. All trials commenced while vessels operated on the lower lakes (Erie, Ontario) and were completed 6–11 days later at ports on the upper lakes (Michigan, Lake Superior). Eight trials were conducted on four ships using five different ballast sediments. Hatching was observed on every ship, although not from all sediments on all ships. Overall hatch rates were very low (0.5 individuals per 500 g sediment), typically involving activation of < 0.05% of total eggs present. Five species of rotifers and copepod nauplii were hatched from ballast sediments, although only one or two species typically hatched from any one sediment. Results of this study indicate that hatching of diapausing eggs contained in ballast sediment of NOBOB ships poses a relatively low risk of invasion to the Great Lakes. However, as reproduction may occur in tanks, and non‐indigenous species may be involved in numerous introduction events, the risk posed by this vector is small but potentially important. While dormancy is a characteristic enabling enhanced survival during transportation in ballast tanks, it becomes a hindrance for introduction.  相似文献

Chrysophyte stomatocysts were described from the surface sediments and other habitats (moss, rocks, and open water) of 36 ponds located on Cape Herschel, Ellesmere Island in the Canadian high Arctic (78°37'N). Thirty-five distinct stomatocyst types were described using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); 1 other cyst was common, but was not observed with SEM. Our study ponds were diverse limnologically and contained distinct cyst floras, but the cause(s) of the floristic differences are as yet unclear. Two ponds with extreme values of water chemistry (i.e. high salinity and low pH) supported unique cyst floras. Distinctive cyst floras were also observed in ponds with high nutrient input from nesting birds and/or with diverse microhabitats (e.g. moss banks), which may provide substrate for periphytic chrysophytes. Arctic pond cyst floras are typically less diverse than those from temperate regions. Highly ornamented cysts are also less common in arctic waters, but the reason for this is unknown. Stomatocysts could be used to augment paleolimnological research in arctic ponds, if the environmental factors controlling cyst distributions and possibly degree of ornamentation can be elucidated.  相似文献

A survey of dinoflagellate resting cysts in surface sedimentsamples was carried out in Tokyo Bay, Japan, to document theirhorizontal distribution. At least 21 different cyst types werefound. Dominant cyst types allowed the recognition of assemblageswhich form three different dinoflagellate cyst communities:the innermost part of the Bay, the central area and the moutharea. In all stations in Tokyo Bay, heterotrophic dinoflagellatecysts always occupied more than half of the cyst populations.Cysts of Polykrikos schwartzii/kofoidii are the most abundantheterotrophic species. These assemblages may reflect highlynutrient-enriched (hypertrophic) and turbulent water conditions.Among the cyst types found were probable ellipsoidal cysts ofAlexandrium tamarense. This is the first record of toxic Alexandriumspecies cysts in Tokyo Bay sediments.  相似文献

The intensity of the microbiological processes of methane formation (MF) and methane oxidation (MO) was determined in the sediments and water of different types of Baltic lakes. The emission of methane from the lake sediments and methane distribution in the water column of the lakes were studied as functions of the lake productivity and hydrologic conditions. During summers, the intensity of MF in the lake sediments and waters varied from 0.001 to 106 ml CH4/(dm3 day) and from 0 to 3.2 ml CH4/(1 day), respectively, and the intensity of MO in the sediments and water varied from 0 to 11.2 ml CH4/(dm3 day) and from 0 to 1.1 ml CH4/(1 day), respectively. The total methane production (MP) in the lakes varied from 15 to 5000 ml CH4/(m2 day). In anoxic waters, the MP comprised 9-18% of the total PM in the lakes. The consumption of organic carbon for methanogenesis varied from 0.03 to 9.7 g/(m2 day). The role of the methane cycle in the degradation of organic matter in the lakes increased with their productivity.  相似文献

Different environmental conditions may lead to diverse morphological, behavioral, and physiological adaptations of different populations of the same species. Lighting conditions, for example, vary vastly especially between aquatic habitats, and have been shown to elicit adaptations. The availability of short-wave ultraviolet (UV) light is especially fluctuating, as UV wavelengths are attenuated strongly depending on water properties. The island of North Uist, Scotland, comprises 2 differential habitat types, tea-stained and clear-water lakes, varying considerably in UV transmission. In previous studies, wild-caught 3-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus populations (3 populations of each habitat type) were tested with respect to their shoaling and mate preferences for fish viewed under UV-present and UV-absent conditions. The results revealed a habitat-dependent preference of UV cues during shoal choice (tea-stained populations: preference for UV-absent condition in tea-stained water; clear-water populations: no preference in clear-water) but an overall preference for UV-present conditions during mate choice. To assess genetic influences on these behavioral patterns, similar experiments were conducted with lab-bred F1-generations of the same stickleback populations that were raised in a common environment (i.e. standardized clear-water conditions). Offspring of sticklebacks from tea-stained lakes tended to prefer shoals viewed under UV-absent conditions (only in tea-stained water), while sticklebacks from clear-water lakes showed a significant preference for the shoal viewed under UV-present conditions in clear-water but not in tea-stained water. Mate-preference experiments demonstrated that females from the tea-stained lakes significantly preferred and females from the clear-water lakes preferred by trend the male viewed under UV-present conditions in the clear-water treatment. The results for both shoaling- and mate-preference tests were largely similar for wild-caught and lab-bred sticklebacks, thus hinting at a genetic basis for the preference patterns.  相似文献

We examined species composition and richness in the seed banks and established vegetation in lakes along the Yangtze River with two contrasting aquaculture types: pen-culture lakes, characterized by pen-culture of commercial fish and crab, and lake-culture lake with more intensive stocking of the entire lake. The mean live biomass and species richness of submerged vegetation was significantly reduced or absent in lake-culture lakes (0-159 g m−2 and 0-0.3 species per sample, respectively), compared to those with pen-culture lakes (1552-2971 g m−2 and 1.5-3.2 species per sample, respectively) in all three study years. Also mean seedling density and species richness of seed banks were significantly lower in these lake-culture lakes (133 m−2 vs. 265 m−2 and 0.6 species vs. 0.9 species per sample, respectively). These results suggest that intensive aquaculture in these lakes has had serious negative effects on submerged vegetation and the associated seed banks. Vegetation history was partly reflected by distribution patterns of seed banks across sediment depth strata. A principal component analysis produced a very clear separation of lakes from pen-culture and lake-culture on the basis of their species composition. Moreover, the principal component analysis also indicated that the variation in the soil seed bank corresponded poorly with vegetation data. This probably reflects species-specific strategies for seed production.  相似文献

The cell numbers and ecological characteristics of the distribution of certain species of butyric acid bacteria (BAB) of the genus Clostridium in the bottom sediments of inland basins of different types were studied using the optimal nutrient media. The seasonal dynamics of clostridial vegetative cells and spores in sediments with different ecological conditions were revealed. The cell numbers of the dominant BAB species were shown to depend on the redox potential of the sediments, the amount and composition of C(org), and the trophic state of the basin in general. C. pasteurianum was found to predominate in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs (5-11 x 10(6) cells/cm3), C. butyricum and C. felsineum predominated in mesotrophic ones (2-11 x 10(6) cells/cm3), and C. acetobutylicum was predominant in acidic chthionoeutrophic lakes and reservoirs (0.1-0.5 x 10(6) cells/cm3). The lowest cell numbers of BAB were found in river sediments, whereas the highest numbers were recorded in the sediments of polysaprobic zones (0.1-1.0 x 10(3) and 0.5-2.0 x 10(7) cells/cm3 respectively).  相似文献

Turbidity, and associated sedimentation, is increasing in aquatic ecosystems globally and is thought to be a major driver of aquatic biodiversity loss. In this study, hatching success of Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus), a Threatened species in Canada, is reported for eggs held under clear and turbid conditions. Spotted Gar embryos were held in either clear or mildly turbid water (~5 NTU). Fertilized eggs held in turbid water exhibited a final 24?% reduction in hatching success by the end of the hatching period. Turbidity is identified as a potential threat for this species in Canada. The decrease in hatching success found here indicates that this early life history stage is particularly vulnerable to disturbance by turbidity and sedimentation.  相似文献

Chrysophycean scales were examined in surface sediments collected from 22 high mountain lakes on the southern slope of the Central Alps, some in Italy and some in Switzerland. The study area receives slightly acidic precipitation and summer lake pH ranges between 5.2 and 8.0. In each lake chrysophycean scale assemblage was dominated by one or two species and its composition was related to lakewater pH. Five short cores were examined in low-alkalinity lakes and evidence of recent lake acidification was found.  相似文献

In recent years, in response to the increased need of water resources for different uses, construction of artificial lakes has created many problems, causing an irreversible modification in the natural environment: the possibility of flooding over adjacent areas increases, new local climatic conditions are created, and there is a loss in water and sediment that should be given back to the river downstream. Moreover, the mean lifetime of artificial lakes is greatly shortened by the accumulation of sediments coming from the rivers feeding into them. Thus, maintenance of these particular habitats by means of periodical sediment removal is necessary in order to keep a satisfactory level of functionality. To resolve this problem, and in the meantime improve the quality of the surrounding environment, we propose a system, based on the integration of both classical and ecological engineering techniques, which is able to: (1) refurnish satisfactory reservoir volumes by removing sediments from the bottom; (2) provide the possibility of reusing these sediments; and (3) increase local biodiversity. The case study is located in Southern Italy, in the Basilicata Region, and involves the Camastra Reservoir.  相似文献
