In the roof of cells built by the Oriental hornet, Vespa orientalis (Vespinae, Hymenoptera), there is one or more grains differing in their composition and shape from the surrounding structures. These grains have a diameter of 100-200 microm and protrude slightly from the roof inward. They contain primarily a large percentage of Ti but also Fe and occasionally Si. The mineral makeup in the grains is still uncertain, but it seems that the minerals belong to the group called perovskite. These grains in the hornet's comb may originate from the soil around the nest, that is, comprised of ceramic matter, but it is also possible that they are secreted from a gland within the frons plate of the hornet because the fungus-like secretion in this gland contains elements similar to those in the roof of the comb cells. We conjecture that the grain in question serves as a reference point for the hornets that build the cell walls in the direction of gravity. The cement whereby the building hornets conjoin the various building materials, whether organic (cellulose and the like) or inorganic (sand grains or tiny stones), is a saliva that is secreted from their oral gland, which upon release hardens into a polymeric glue. The ceramic grain embedded within this polymeric matrix is endowed with different physical properties and can therefore respond differently to the tension or pressure of the surrounding walls.  相似文献

The distribution and behaviour of particulate trace elements in the atmosphere have been studied by continuous measurements for 5 years at seven non-urban sites in the United Kingdom. Samples have been taken regularly of airborne dust, rainwater and dry deposition: these have been analysed for up to 36 elements. Concentrations of trace elements vary considerably between sites but the relative concentrations are among uniform: this suggests similarity of origin or good atmospheric mixing. By comparing the relative concentrations with those in soil it is possible to differentiate between trace elements that are derived from soil and those that may be attributed to industrial activity. This classification is supported by estimates of the particle sizes in air. The deposition of trace elements can be related to the concentrations presnet in soil and to the annual removal by crops. Retrospective analyses of stored samples from one site describe the history of trace element concentrations in air since 1957. The sea surface is considered as a possible source of atmospheric trace elements.  相似文献

The organization of the vertebrate cerebellum has been thoroughly studied over the past century, but the function of this structure remains poorly understood. In elasmobranch fishes, the cerebellum displays tremendous variation in size and development although the basic and conservative nature of cerebellar circuitry as seen in other vertebrate taxa is largely retained. Large and morphologically complex cerebelli have evolved independently in both sharks and batoids, and the relative development of this structure in both taxa parallels those of birds and mammals. There are relatively few studies of the physiological role of the cerebellum in generating or shaping behaviors, however, and a convincing explanation of cerebellar hypertrophy in elasmobranchs is lacking. The purpose of this article is to review the current understanding of the structure of the cerebellum in elasmobranch fishes, the physiological responses of cerebellar neurons and the possible role of the cerebellum in behavior. I will also provide a number of hypotheses for future research directions, based upon models that have been suggested by different investigators. These hypotheses include models of cerebellar function as a sensory coincidence detector, a dynamic state estimator and/or a direct modulator of motor programs. Hypotheses concerning the possible organization of cerebellar microcomplexes, the evolution of afferent and efferent cerebellar connections paralleling those observed in mammals and the role of the cerebellum in learning are also suggested.  相似文献

I factors in Drosophila melanogaster are transposable elements structurally related to Mammalian LINEs. Their transposition is activated at high frequencies during I-R hybrid dysgenesis and is associated with the production of mutations of various sorts. Very few of these mutations have been studied at the molecular level; those reported so far result either from chromosomal rearrangements or from insertions of complete I factors. We have analysed three I-R induced yellow mutations and have found that one of them is due to the insertion of an I element very similar to the complete I factor, whereas the other two are due to insertions of I elements that are truncated at their 5' ends; one of them exhibits an unusual 3' end. We discuss possible mechanisms of production of such modified I elements.  相似文献

Hypotension in adult animals recruits brain sites extending from cerebellar cortex to the midbrain and forebrain, suggesting a range of motor and endocrine reactions to maintain perfusion. We hypothesized that comparable neural actions during development rely more extensively on localized medullary processes. We used functional MRI to assess neural responses during sodium nitroprusside challenges in 14 isoflurane-anesthetized kittens, aged 14-25 days, and seven adult cats. Baseline arterial pressure increased with age in kittens, and basal heart rates were higher. The magnitude of depressor responses increased with age, while baroreceptor reflex sensitivity initially increased over those of adults. In contrast to a decline in adult cats, functional MRI signal intensity increased significantly in dorsal and ventrolateral medullary regions and the midline raphe in the kittens during the hypotensive challenges. In addition, significant signal intensity differences emerged in cerebellar cortex and deep nuclei, dorsolateral pons, midbrain tectum, hippocampus, thalamus, and insular cortex. The altered neural responses in medullary baroreceptor reflex sites may have resulted from disinhibitory or facilitatory influences from cerebellar and more rostral structures as a result of inadequately developed myelination or other neural processes. A comparable immaturity of blood pressure control mechanisms in humans would have significant clinical implications.  相似文献

Recent progress in the comparative analysis of the vertebrate cerebellar organization shows that the cerebella of different tetrapods have a basically similar intrinsic organization, whereas the cerebellum of fishes displays a number of fundamental differences in this respect. Clear examples of teleostean cerebellar specializations are present in the gigantocerebellum of mormyrids, including a valvula cerebelli, the absence of a parasagittal zonal organization, the presence of eurydendroid projection neurons instead of deep cerebellar nuclei, a precerebellar nucleus lateralis valvulae, olivocerebellar fibers that do not climb into the molecular layer, uni- and bilateral locations of granule cells, parallel fibers without a T-shaped bifurcation and with a coextensive distribution in the transverse plane, and different Purkinje cell arrangements including a dendritic palisade pattern. A theoretical exploration of the possible significance of these configurations suggests that they all might be involved in a single main cerebellar function, i.e. coincidence detection of parallel fiber activity by Purkinje cells.  相似文献

Here we describe a two-stepped photobiotin-based procedure to enrich a target (canine retinal) cDNA library for tissue specific clones without removing those containing repetitive ( SINE ) elements, despite the presence of these elements in the driver population. In a first hybridization excess SINE elements were hybridized to a driver (canine cerebellar) cDNA. In a second hybridization target cDNA was added to this reaction. The resulting cDNA library was enriched for retinal specific clones, but contained the same ratio of clones with SINE elements found in the unsubtracted library.  相似文献

Arteriovenous differences of amino acids across the mammary glands of lactating rats are diminished when the rats are starved for 24 h. When 24 h-starved rats were refed for 2 1/2 h, the arteriovenous differences of amino acids returned to values similar to those found in well-fed rats. In order to find a possible explanation for these rapid changes, we tested the effect of ketone bodies on amino acid uptake by the gland. At 5 min after injection of acetoacetate to fed rats, when the total concentration of ketone bodies in blood was similar to that found in starvation, the uptake of amino acids by the mammary gland was similar to that found after starvation, i.e. lower than in fed rats. However, 30 min after administration of acetoacetate, when the arterial concentration of ketone bodies had returned to values similar to those in fed rats, the arteriovenous differences of amino acids were similar to those found in fed rats. We conclude that the changes in blood ketone bodies may be responsible, at least in part, for the changes in amino acid uptake that occur in starvation and in the starvation--refeeding transition.  相似文献

It is generally known that bone loss is one of the most important complications for astronauts who are exposed to long-term microgravity in space. Changes in blood flow, systemic hormones, and locally produced factors were indicated as important elements contributing to the response of osteoblastic cells to loading, but research in this field still has many questions. Here, the possible biological involvement of thyroid C cells is being investigated. The paper is a comparison between a case of a wild type single mouse and a over-expressing pleiotrophin single mouse exposed to hypogravity conditions during the first animal experiment of long stay in International Space Station (91 days) and three similar mice exposed to hypergravity (2Gs) conditions. We provide evidence that both microgravity and hypergravity induce similar loss of C cells with reduction of calcitonin production. Pleiotrophin over-expression result in some protection against negative effects of gravity change. Potential implication of the gravity mechanic forces in the regulation of bone homeostasis via thyroid equilibrium is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract: The neurological mouse mutant dystonia musculorum exhibits bizarre appendicular and truncal dystonia without known cerebellar histopathology. We evaluated striatal dopamine and cerebellar norepinephrine metabolism in this mutant and compared the results with those obtained in wild-type BALB/c and B6C3 controls. Tyrosine hydroxylase activity and dopamine metabolite levels (homovanillic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid) in the striatum of the mutant were similar to controls. Tyrosine hydroxylase activity and the steady-state level of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenethyleneglycol, a metabolite of norepinephrine, in the cerebellum were 38% and 42-66%, respectively, greater in the mutant. However, the level of norepinephrine was similar (∼350 ng/g). Further, a Purkinje cell-specific marker, cGMP-dependent protein kinase, was unchanged in the mutant and no Purkinje cell pathology was observed with light microscopy. The lack of Purkinje cell derangement and similar levels of cerebellar norepinephrine and cGMP-dependent protein kinase activity suggest that increased norepinephrine metabolism in the cerebellum of this mutant is not a morphological response to gross target cell loss during morphogenesis. The observed changes may be a reaction to abnormal impulse traffic or altered input/output pathways to the mutant cerebellum during its development.  相似文献

Cerebellar synaptogenesis: mutant mice--neuronal grafting.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Neurological mutations affecting the cerebellum of the mouse have offered the possibility to study some of the cellular mechanisms involved in the establishment of synaptic connections (see in Sotelo, 1990). Indeed, these mutations provoke through well-defined lesions, the disruption of the normal processes of synapse formation and, by examination of the perturbations in the adult cerebellar connectivity, it is possible to unravel some of the numerous and intricate cellular interactions taking place during synaptogenesis. Furthermore, some of these mutants primarily affect Purkinje cells, the pivotal elements of the cerebellar cortex and its only output, inducing their degeneration. These Purkinje cell-deficient cerebella offer an optimal material to try--by grafting experiments--to replace the missing neurons, and to analyze synaptogenic processes between neuronal partners of different biological ages: the host adult neurons and the embryonary grafted Purkinje cells (Sotelo et al., 1990). The aim of this paper is to summarize some of the work carried out in my laboratory concerning the two above-mentioned topics.  相似文献

KM+ is a D(+)mannose-specific lectin with a carbohydrate structure-affinity relationship different from those of most mannose-binding lectins. KM+ elicits carbohydrate-dependent biological effects in several mammalian cell types, but it has not yet been employed as a probe for the detection of its specific ligands. We show here for the first time the screening and partial identification of cerebellar mannosyl-glycoconjugates recognized by KM+, by means of lectin-histochemistry and lectin-blotting. Biotinylated KM+ stained most cellular structures in the adult rat cerebellum, particularly Purkinje cells bodies and the surface of granule cells, but not cellular processes. Capillaries in the choroid plexus were also strongly decorated, while blood vessels in the cerebellar parenchyma remained unstained. D(+)mannose, but not D(+)galactose, abolished the staining of all cerebellar structures. Higher inhibitory potencies were found for mannosyl-glycans such as mannotriose (man-alpha1,3-[man-alpha1,6]-man) and the biantennary heptasaccharide carried by the enzyme horseradish peroxidase. After separation of cerebellar proteins by SDS-PAGE, KM+ recognized three major unidentified mannosyl-glycoproteins of 132, 83 and 49 kDa. KM+ also detected high-Mw bands corresponding to the light and heavy chains of Type-I laminin, but not a 160-kDa cleavage product of laminin. We conclude that KM+ binds preferentially to a specific subset of mannose-containing glycoproteins in cerebellar tissue, thus being much more restricted than other mannose-specific lectins. KM+ can be used as a novel probe to screen the central nervous system for this specific subset of complex mannosyl-glycoconjugates.  相似文献

The first part of the paper deals with a two emulsion autoradiographic technique for double labelling experiments with 3H- and 14C-thymidine which permits a clear discrimination of the different types of labelling. In the second part the application of this technique to cell kinetic studies is discussed. Accurate discrimination between the different types of labelling, namely purely 3H-, purely 14C- and double (3H + 14C) labelling, is only possible if the activity ratio of 3H- to 14C-thymidine is sufficiently high. This condition is necessary for a reliable distinction between those grains in the first emulsion which are due to true 3H-labelling and spurious grains which are simultaneously produced in the same emulsion by 14C-beta-particles. Experiments are described to determine the required activity ratio of 3H- to 14C-thymidine.  相似文献

In the present paper, we describe anatomical variants of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery in man for applicative purposes. Our goal was to provide the surgeon with a detailed anatomical view of the region. This is similar to what he may observe through the surgical microscope using modern microsurgical techniques. We have focused our attention on the segments of the artery comprising its origin, its course until it reaches the cerebellum and its main collateral branches. Our results confirm the great variability of the elements under study, but enable the establishment of a few basic variational patterns. These patterns together with their relative frequency may be helpful in microsurgery.  相似文献

Insertion sequences (ISs) can constitute an important component of prokaryotic (bacterial and archaeal) genomes. Over 1,500 individual ISs are included at present in the ISfinder database (www-is.biotoul.fr), and these represent only a small portion of those in the available prokaryotic genome sequences and those that are being discovered in ongoing sequencing projects. In spite of this diversity, the transposition mechanisms of only a few of these ubiquitous mobile genetic elements are known, and these are all restricted to those present in bacteria. This review presents an overview of ISs within the archaeal kingdom. We first provide a general historical summary of the known properties and behaviors of archaeal ISs. We then consider how transposition might be regulated in some cases by small antisense RNAs and by termination codon readthrough. This is followed by an extensive analysis of the IS content in the sequenced archaeal genomes present in the public databases as of June 2006, which provides an overview of their distribution among the major archaeal classes and species. We show that the diversity of archaeal ISs is very great and comparable to that of bacteria. We compare archaeal ISs to known bacterial ISs and find that most are clearly members of families first described for bacteria. Several cases of lateral gene transfer between bacteria and archaea are clearly documented, notably for methanogenic archaea. However, several archaeal ISs do not have bacterial equivalents but can be grouped into Archaea-specific groups or families. In addition to ISs, we identify and list nonautonomous IS-derived elements, such as miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements. Finally, we present a possible scenario for the evolutionary history of ISs in the Archaea.  相似文献

Inhibition of the hippocampus by the medial amygdala is mediated by vasopressin-like peptide. Because vasopressin has action on the periphery as well as the brain, we conducted experiments to evaluate the relationship between possible peripheral actions and the central effects of the endogenous peptide. In the acutely anesthetized rat, peptide-mediated inhibition of the hippocampus is not associated with significant changes in heart rate, blood pressure or body temperature. Peripheral injections of peptide agonist fail to evoke the central inhibition, and peripheral injections of peptide antagonist fail to block the central inhibition. Stimulation of central nuclei that contain vasopressin or a similar peptide also fail to duplicate the effect of stimulating the amygdala. We conclude that the peptidergic transmission is independent of peripheral causes or correlates.  相似文献
