Rate of decline in plasma progesterone concentration may influence the success of lactogenesis in the sow. The aim of this experiment was to investigate whether progesterone concentration and rate of decline of progesterone in the periparturient sow could be manipulated by changing her feeding level. Forty-two sows received either 1.15 or 2 times maintenance energy daily from day 100 of gestation up until and including the day of farrowing. Blood samples were taken on days 98 (pre-treatment baseline) and 109 of gestation, during farrowing, 6h after farrowing and at 09:00 h for the 3 days following farrowing. Plasma progesterone concentration was determined and progesterone half-life was calculated for each sow. High intake feeding had no effect on plasma progesterone concentration at any time of sampling. Progesterone half-life averaged 41.2 +/- 3.81 h and did not differ between treatments. There was no relationship between progesterone concentration, or half-life, and litter weight gain, although there was a weak correlation between decline in progesterone in the first 6h after birth and piglet growth rate from birth to 6 days of age (R(2) = 0.109, P < 0.05). It was concluded that increasing feed intake in late gestation cannot be used to increase progesterone clearance rate and hasten the onset of lactogenesis in sows.  相似文献

Eighty seven sows, taken from a herd whose mean gestation length was 116 days, were allotted at random on day 114 of gestation to one of five treatment groups as follows: (1) 175 mug prostaglandin analogue (closprostenol I.C.I. Ltd) (2) 1 mg K11941 (alfaprostol VETEM Ltd), (3) 2 mg K11941, (4) 3 mg K11941 (5) 2 ml saline (control). All prostaglandin analogues induced parturition significantly earlier than controls (P < 0.05), but there were no differences between any of the prostaglandin treatments in the interval to birth of the first piglet (P > 0.05). The mean intervals to parturition were 24.6, 22.3, 24.9, 30.7 and 53.0 hours for treatments 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Almost two-thirds of treated sows farrowed during the working period of the day following injection compared with a small proportion of control animals. Induction of parturition had no effect on birth weight, piglet survival to 3 weeks or on subsequent weaning to service interval in treated sows. Results show that this new analogue of prostaglandin (K11941) is effective in inducing farrowing in the sow.  相似文献

A 4000 sow farm in the US using early weaning and a computerized record system was recruited. Farrowed sows were assigned into two experimental treatments: prostaglandin F2alpha injection or control. Sows were assigned by a farm worker to obtain even parity distributions between two groups in each farrowing group. A single i.m. injection of 2 ml of prostaglandin F2alpha between 24 and 48 h after farrowing was administered in the muscle immediately lateral to the vulva. Control sows received no treatment. Of 3562 farrowed sows, 1592 were administered with prostaglandin F2alpha. Parity distributions were not different between control and treatment groups. Parity was categorized into two groups: parity 1-2 or > or = 3. Mean lactation length was 18 days and there was no difference between the control and treatment groups. No main effects of prostaglandin F2alpha administration were found in either parity group on adjusted 21-day litter weight, weaning-to-first-mating interval or weaning-to-conception interval. In parity > or = 3 sows, a two-way interaction between the association of lactation length and treatment with pigs born alive at subsequent farrowing was found (P = 0.044), while no such interaction was found in parity 1-2 sows (P = 0.14). The prediction line for subsequent pigs born alive indicates that prostaglandin F2alpha administration alters the relationship between lactation length and subsequent litter size on mid- or old-parity sows.  相似文献

Pregnant sows and gilts were administered either 0, 2.5, 5, 10 or 20 mg prostaglandin F(2)alpha (PGF(2)alpha) intramuscularly on Day 112 or 113 of gestation at 0800 h in an effort to induce parturition. The average interval from PGF(2)alpha injection to farrowing was 55.1 +/- 5.7, 29.4 +/- 3.1, 32.1 +/- 4.6, 27.8 +/- 1.8 and 26.9 +/- 1.1 h for 0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg, respectively. All PGF(2)alpha treatments increased (P < 0.01) over controls the number of sows farrowing 23 to 33 h after injection. The average gestation length was significantly shorter in treated gilts; however, no detrimental effect on pig performance or pig survivability was observed. A second trial evaluated the effect of a 10-mg dose of PGF(2)alpha on the induction of parturition in sows in order to obtain a majority of sows farrowing within normal working hours (0700 to 1700 h). The interval from injection to farrowing was decreased (P < 0.05) by PGF(2)alpha treatment (66.2 +/- 5.3 vs 28.1 +/- 2.2 h). Fifty-seven percent (P < 0.05) of PGF(2)alpha-treated sows farrowed between 0700 and 1700 h as compared to 13.6% for control sows. A third trial was conducted to examine a sequential treatment of PGF(2)alpha and oxytocin to control the time of parturition more precisely. Sows receiving only 10 mg of PGF(2)alpha farrowed on an average 31.1 +/- 1.4 h after injection. The injection of 40 IU oxytocin 24 to 28 h after PGF(2)alpha decreased (P < 0.05) the interval from PGF(2)alpha to farrowing (28.1 +/- 0.9 h). The addition of oxytocin increased (P < 0.05) the number of sows farrowing within 3 h of injection (33 vs 86% for PGF(2)alpha and PGF(2)alpha + oxytocin treatments, respectively). A fourth trial was designed to determine if the addition of exogenous estradiol benzoate (EB) to a sequential treatment of PGF(2)alpha and oxytocin would improve the predictability and synchronization of the induced parturition. Sows were assigned to receive either saline, 10 mg PGF(2)alpha + 40 IU oxytocin or 10 mg PGF(2)alpha + 5 mg EB + 40 IU oxytocin. The addition of EB reduced (P < 0.01) the variance in the interval from oxytocin to farrowing and added precision to the predicted time of induced parturition.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of two types of housing on the duration of farrowing and the physiology of sows before and after farrowing. We assigned 20 sows (PEN) to farrowing pens (210 cm x 335 cm) enriched with straw bedding and 18 sows (CRATE) were placed in farrowing crates (80 cm x 210 cm) with no bedding material. We sampled the animals during period A (from day -5 before farrowing to day +1 of lactation) and during period B (from days +2 to +5 of lactation). We took daily venous blood samples for progesterone measurements and four salivary samples per day (at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00) for cortisol determination. In addition, intensive blood sampling was performed in 18 catheterised sows (9 PEN and 9 CRATE) to determine the level of oxytocin during farrowing. The treatment had no effect on litter size, piglet mortality at birth and weaning, growth of the piglets between days 1 and 5 of life. We found no significant difference in the cortisol concentration between the two groups during period A (p=0.36). Significant difference was found in period B, where the CRATE group had a higher concentration of cortisol than the PEN group (p=0.03). Progesterone concentration did not differ between the two groups (p=0.80). The duration of farrowing was on average 93 min longer in the CRATE sows (n=15), with a mean of 311+/-35 min (mean+/-S.D.), than in the PEN sows (n=19), with a mean of 218+/-24 min (p=0.03). In addition, the mean interval between each piglet expulsion was longer in the CRATE group (n=11), with a mean of 25+/-4 min, than in the PEN group (n=15) with a mean of 16+/-2 min (p=0.05). During farrowing, the post-expulsion oxytocin pulses average tended to be higher in the PEN group (77.6+/-47.6 ng/ml) than in the CRATE group (38.1+/-24.6 pg/ml) (p=0.08). The concentration of oxytocin strongly affected the duration of farrowing (p<0.001). In conclusion, this study showed that the environment influences the physiology of the sow during farrowing and early lactation.  相似文献

We studied the effect of prostaglandin (PG) F(2alpha)-AGN 190851 on farrowing induction and compared it with that of PGF(2alpha)-oxytocin. Eighty crossbred, multiparous sows were randomly assigned to the following 4 treatment groups of 20 sows each: 1) control, saline-saline; 2) PGF(2alpha) (10 mg/sow)-oxytocin (30 IU/sow); 3) PGF(2alpha) (10 mg/sow)-AGN 190851 (0.06 mg/kg); and 4) PGF(2alpha) (10 mg/sow)-AGN 190851 (0.1 mg/kg). Either PGF(2alpha) or saline was administered intramuscularly on Day 111 of gestation at 11:30 h; AGN 190851, oxytocin or saline was administered intramuscularly 20 h after the first injection. The PGF(2alpha)-AGN 190851 (0.1 mg/kg) treated sows had the shortest mean farrowing interval (2.1 +/- 1.6 h, mean +/- SD) compared with the remaining treatment groups (control: 67.1 +/- 26.2 h; PGF(2alpha)-oxytocin: 5.6 +/- 6.7 h; PGF(2alpha)-AGN 190851 [0.06 mg/kg]: 3.0 +/- 2.8 h). Duration of farrowing, litter size, litter weight and interval from weaning to first estrus in sows were not significantly changed by these treatments. The PGF(2alpha)-oxytocin group had a significantly higher stillbirth rate than the control group, whereas the PGF(2alpha)-AGN 190851 (0.1 mg/kg) group had the lowest number of pigs born dead and stillbirth rate among the 4 treatment groups. These results suggested that the PGF(2alpha)-AGN 190851 combination can be used as an alternative method to PGF(2alpha)-oxytocin for synchronizing farrowing.  相似文献

Twin bearing mature ewes (n=40) were treated with exogenous progesterone (100mg daily in oil) or vehicle (oil control) from Day 143 of gestation until lambing to investigate the effects on gestation length, foetal survival and colostrum yield and composition. Compared to control ewes, progesterone treated ewes had increased (P<0.05) serum progesterone concentrations (by 4.3 ng/ml) before lambing and in the first day post-partum (by 10 ng/ml). Progesterone treatment increased gestation length (150.4+/-0.6 days versus 147.8+/-0.6 days, P<0.05) and colostrum yield at 1h after lambing (P<0.05) but the colostrum had a lower concentration of IgG (P=0.02). In the first 24h after lambing, total colostrum and IgG yields were not different between groups. Four (20%) of the progesterone treated ewes produced either one or two dead lambs, while one ewe died on day 155 without initiating the birth process. We conclude that the daily administration of 100mg progesterone resulted in extended gestation length and reduced lamb survival but did not lower colostrum yield.  相似文献

Forty-six crossbred sows were treated with a single intramuscular injection of 175 μg of cloprostenol on day 110, 112 or 113 of gestation and compared with 46 control animals farrowing naturally during the same period. Of the treated animals, 96% farrowed within 48 h. The mean time to the induced farrowing was 28 ± 1.2 h with 64% of the farrowings occurring during daylight hours. Piglet mortality was greater for farrowings induced at day 110 than for 112 or 113 days of gestation. Since the mean length of gestation for natural farrowings for untreated control sows was 115 ± 0.9 days, it may be concluded that farrowings could safely be induced within 2–3 days of the average expected farrowing date for the herd. For precise timing of treatment, the average gestation length for individual herds should be pre-determined and accurate breeding records are needed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the dose of alfaprostol (18, 19, 20-trinor-17-cyclohexyl-13, 14 didehydro-PGF(2)alpha-methylester) and the day of administration most effective in inducing sows to farrow during normal working hours (0700 to 1700). One-hundred forty multiparous crossbred sows, taken from a herd whose mean gestation length was 114.3 days, were assigned to one of five treatment groups: 1) control vehicle-propylene glycol, 2) 0.5 mg alfaprostol (AP). 3) 1 mg AP, 4) 2 mg AP and 5) 3 mg AP. Sows received an intramuscular injection of AP between 0800 and 0830 on either day 111, 112 or 113 of gestation. Parameters studied included interval from injection to birth of first pig, farrowing interval, total number of pigs born, number born alive, average birth weight, percent stillborn, interval from weaning to next estrus and number born alive next litter. The mean intervals from injection to the birth of the first pig were 55.2 +/- 7.1; 41.1 +/- 5.1; 29.6 +/- 4.0; 24.3 +/- 1.1; 24.8 +/- 0.9 h for groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively (P<0.05). The percentage of sows that farrowed during normal working hours (23 to 33 h after injection) for groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were 15, 53, 60, 77 and 70%, respectively. Average birth weights (kg) for treatment groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were 1.54 +/- 0.05; 1.65 +/- 0.05; 1.59 +/- 0.05; 1.54 +/- 0.05 and 1.42 +/- 0.05, respectively (P<0.05). Mean differences in total number of pigs born and number born alive were also statistically significant (P<0.05) but stillbirth rate was not different (P>0.05) among treatment groups. These results indicate that a single injection of 1, 2 or 3 mg of alfaprostol will successfully induce parturition the following day in a majority of the treated sows.  相似文献

The effect of three feeding regimens on progesterone level was tested during early pregnancy in multiparous sows. A total of eighteen sows in their eighth parity (8.1 +/- 2.8, mean +/- S.D.) were used. During lactation the sows were fed to appetite and after weaning they received 4 kg (52 MJ) a commercial feed per day. Following ovulation, sows were allocated to one of three treatment groups and fed 2 kg/day (low feeding, LLL) or 4 kg/day (high feeding, HHH) throughout the trial or 2 kg/day for 11 days, 4 kg/day for 10 days, and 2 kg/day for the remaining days of the study (modified feeding, LHL). Blood for progesterone and cortisol analyses was collected daily throughout the study, and for luteinizing hormone (LH) assay for 12 h at 15 min intervals on days 14 and 21 of pregnancy. An adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) challenge test was performed on all sows day 28 of pregnancy. Dietary treatment did not significantly affect hormonal parameters. However, progesterone concentration tended to be lower (P = 0.08) in the HHH group than in the LLL group. In the LHL group venous progesterone concentration seemed to fluctuate. No effects of feeding were observed on progesterone concentration in allantoic fluid on day 35 of pregnancy. Venous cortisol level was significantly higher (P < 0.05) during proestrus and oestrus in all groups and there was no significant difference between groups in response to ACTH challenge. The mean amplitude of LH pulses decreased significantly (P < 0.01) from days 14 to 21 of pregnancy in all groups. In addition, an interaction was found between feeding level and baseline LH concentration and also between feeding level and mean LH concentration. Embryonic recovery was highest in the LLL (69%), lowest in the HHH (45%) and moderate in the LHL (55%) group. Neither high feeding nor modified feeding provided any benefits for reproductive performance in multiparous sows. A low feeding regimen thus appears optimal for multiparous sows in early pregnancy at least with the management regime described.  相似文献

Plasma progesterone and LH concentrations around estrus were determined for both PMSG treated (experimental animals) and non-treated (control animals) dairy cows and heifers of the Holstein Friesian and Jersey breeds, and these hormone profiles were related to the embryo quality. Most experimental animals experienced an increase in progesterone concentrations following PMSG treatment and an abrupt decrease to values below 3 nmol/l after PG injection. The mean (+/-SE) intervals from prostaglandin treatment to estrus were 46.9+/-1.8 h and 64.5+/-4.8 h for experimental and control animals, respectively. At the onset of heat the progesterone concentration in experimental animals with optimal embryo quality (group I) was significantly lower (p<0.01) than in experimental animals which yielded unfertilized eggs (group II) (1.2+/-0.1 versus 3.9+/-0.8 nmol/l) and significantly higher than the level in the control group (0.6+/-0.1 nmol/l). Following estrus the progesterone profiles in all 3 groups were studied and the length of the superovulatory cycle was measured to 26.0+/-4.8 days. The preovulatory LH surge occurred sooner after prostaglandin injection in experimental (41 h) than in control animals (65 h). The LH surge in group I occurred within a narrow range and reached a higher average level than group II (24.2+/-2.2 ng/ml and 16.3+/-3.7 ng/ml, respectively). The control group attained an even higher LH surge (31.8+/-8.8 ng/ml) than did the experimental animals. The data presented in this experiment indicate that plasma levels of progesterone and LH in PMSG-PGF(2)alpha treated animals are related to embryo or egg quality.  相似文献

Eighty crossbred, multiparous sows, weighing between 190 and 320 kg, were randomly assigned to the following four treatment groups of 20 sows each: 1) saline-saline, 2) cloprostenol-saline, 3) saline-xylazine and 4) cloprostenol-xylazine. The mean gestation length of each multiparous sow was calculated. Cloprostenol (250 ug/sow, i.m.) or saline was given 3 d prior to the calculated due date at 11:30 a.m. Xylazine (2 mg/kg, i.m.) or saline was given 20 h after either the cloprostenol or previous saline treatment. Cloprostenol-xylazine treated sows had the shortest mean farrowing interval (1.5 +/- 0.3 h) when compared with the rest of the treatment groups (saline-saline:66.0 +/- 8.1, cloprostenol-saline:10.5 +/- 1.9, saline-xylazine:60.6 +/- 5.6 h). Farrowing time, percentage of stillbirths, average birth weight, d-5 and d-21 postbirth weights, number of pigs born, number of pigs born alive, and number of pigs surviving at 5 and 21 d afterbirth were not significantly different among the four groups. This study demonstrated that cloprostenol-xylazine treatment decreases the time to onset of farrowing with less variation than cloprostenol or xylazine alone. Therefore, the use of a cloprostenol-xylazine combination is suggested as an alternative method for inducing farrowing.  相似文献

This study describes reproductive and metabolic responses in sows fed at two different feeding levels from day 3-35 of second gestation. After insemination, 37 sows were assigned to one of two treatments: 1) Control: 2.5 kg/day of a gestation diet; 2) Plus Feed 3.25 kg/day of a gestation diet (+30%). Sow weight, back fat and loin muscle depth were measured at farrowing, weaning, start of treatment, day 14 after start treatment and end of treatment. Frequent blood samples were taken for progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), glucose and insulin, insulin-like-growth-factor-1 (IGF-1), non-esterified-fatty-acids (NEFA) and urea analysis. At day 35 after insemination sows were euthanized and their reproductive tract collected to assess ovarian, embryonic and placental characteristics. Plus Feed sows gained 5.4 kg more weight and 0.9 mm more back fat and tended to be heavier at slaughter compared to Control sows (193 vs. 182 kg, P = 0.06). No difference in loin muscle gain was found. Treatment also did not affect vital embryonic survival, which was 72.1 ± 3.9% for Control and 73.4 ± 3.2% for Plus Feed sows, resulting in, respectively, 15.9 ± 0.9 and 15.7 ± 0.7 vital embryos. No effect of treatment on any of the ovarian, embryonic or placental characteristics was found. Progesterone profiles during the first month of gestation, and LH characteristics at day 14 of gestation were not different between treatments. Progesterone concentration was lower (P < 0.05) 3 h after feeding compared with the prefeeding level on days 7-11 after first progesterone rise for Plus Feed and on days 8-10 after first progesterone rise for Control sows. At day 15, preprandial glucose and insulin concentrations were not different between treatments, insulin peaked later (48 vs. 24 min) and at a higher concentration in Plus Feed than in Control sows. Furthermore, glucose area under the curve (AUC) tended to be lower (−171.7 ± 448.8 vs. 1257.1 ± 578.9 mg/6.2 h, P = 0.06, respectively) for Plus Feed vs. Control sows. IGF-1 concentration was not different between treatments, but NEFA concentrations were lower for Plus Feed vs. Control sows (149.5 ± 9.2 vs. 182.4 ± 11.9 μm/L, respectively, P = 0.04) and urea concentration tended to be higher in Plus Feed than in Control sows (4.3 ± 0.1 vs. 3.9 ± 0.1, respectively, P = 0.13). None of the metabolic parameteres were related to reproductive measures. In conclusion, feeding 30% more feed from day 3 till d 35 of second gestation increased weight gain and resulted in lower NEFA concentrations, but did not affect progesterone, LH or IGF-1 and embryonic and placental characteristics.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was two-fold. First, to characterize the secretory profiles of oestradiol-17beta and progesterone in relation to the structural changes observed by ultrasonography during follicular dynamics in non-ovulating llamas. Second, to evaluate the effect of exogenous progesterone on follicular activity, in terms of follicle development and hormone production. In experiment one, six adult non-pregnant, non-lactating llamas were examined daily by rectal palpation and transrectal ultrasonography during 70 days. On day 54, intravaginal devices containing 0.33 g of progesterone (CIDR) were inserted and left in the vagina during 16 days. The mean duration of a follicular wave was 22.6+/-2.5 days. The follicular growth phase (follicles growing from 3mm to maximum size) averaged 9.2+/-2.8 days, the mature phase (follicles around maximum size) 5.2+/-1.4 days and regression phase (follicles with decreasing size) 8.2+/-2.2 days. Oestradiol-17beta plasma concentrations exhibited a similar wave pattern (P<0.05). In addition, oestradiol-17beta peak plasma concentrations (46.9+/-3.3 pmoll(-1)) were attained approximately 12 days after the beginning of the growing phase in connection with maximum follicle size (11.8+/-1.6mm). After CIDR insertion, a rapid increase in plasma progesterone concentrations was observed, with peak concentrations attained on day 1 after insertion. Thereafter, concentrations decreased gradually. Mean follicle size steadily decreased from the day of CIDR insertion to day 11 post-insertion (10.3+/-1.6 and 3.3+/-0.8mm, respectively). In order to investigate the effect of follicle size at CIDR insertion on the outcome of progesterone treatment, experiment two was designed. Sixteen adult non-pregnant and non-lactating llamas were divided into four groups according to follicle development at the time of CIDR insertion (group I: follicles < or =6 mm; group II: follicles between 6 and 9 mm; group III: follicles between 10 and 14 mm and group IV, regressing follicles). In groups II, III and IV, a significant decrease in follicle size was observed after the insertion of the CIDR device. In group I, no further development of dominant follicles was observed until the device was withdrawn. In all cases, the smallest diameter was registered between days 5 and 7 after the beginning of treatment. In conclusion, a detailed characterization of follicular waves using ultrasound and hormone determinations simultaneously in non-ovulating llamas and after the insertion of progesterone releasing devices, is presented.  相似文献

A total of 101 sows was used to examine postpartum progesterone levels and litter performance following administration of 15 mg prostaglandins F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha) n = 48) given within 12 h after farrowing. Daily blood samples and rectal temperatures were taken from all sows during the first 3 d post partum. Plasma progesterone (P(4)) concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Regardless of treatment, plasma P(4) levels for all sows decreased in a similar fashion over the 3 d sampled. Mean (+/- SEM) P(4) on Day 2 (0.55 +/- 0.06 ng/ml) and Day 3 (0.38 +/- 0.04 ng/ml) were lower (P<0.01) than on Day 1 (0.98 +/- 0.08 ng/ml). Rectal temperature did not differ between PGF(2alpha) treated and nontreated sows nor was it different over the days measured. Litter characteristics, including survival rates on Day 7 and at weaning, and body weight on Days 3 and 35, were not affected by treatment. It was concluded that PGF(2alpha) administration to sows within 12 h post farrowing had no affect on the rate of luteal regression, as determined by P(4) concentration, nor on subsequent litter performance.  相似文献

The profitability of pig production is constrained by high incidences of peri-parturient and pre-weaning piglet mortality. Supplementing sows with either progesterone or caffeine during the last week of gestation can reduce stillbirths and improve piglet performance. However, the consequences of combining these two substances has not been investigated. The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of oral supplementation of sows with progesterone (regumate) and caffeine at the end of gestation on the timing and progression of farrowing, as well as piglet survival and growth to weaning. From days 111 to 113 of gestation, 20 Large White pregnant sows (parity 3.0±0.45) received 5 ml of Regumate Porcine (0.4 w/v oral solution; MSD Animal Health) daily on top of their morning ration. Sows were stratified according to parity and predicted farrowing date, and allocated at random to receive a diet supplemented with either 0 g caffeine/kg diet (CONT) or 2.4 g of caffeine/kg diet (CAFF) from day 113 of gestation until parturition (n=10 sows/treatment). Treatment did not affect total litter size; however, CONT sows gave birth to more live and fewer dead piglets compared with CAFF sows; 14.5±0.73 v. 11.7±1.03 and 0.7±0.20 v. 3.2±0.77; P<0.05). Mean, minimum and maximum piglet birthweight were unaffected by treatment. Compared with the control, caffeine increased the proportion of piglets with a birthweight <1 kg (0.16±0.05 v. 0.05±0.02; P=0.072) and decreased the proportion of live born piglets surviving to day 5 postpartum (0.77±0.06 v. 0.90±0.02; P<0.05) and to weaning (0.74±0.06 v. 0.90±0.02; P<0.05). Overall, the current data provided the first evidence that caffeine supplementation of sows receiving progesterone to prevent premature farrowing impaired piglet survival during, and shortly after parturition. This negative outcome may be linked to extended farrowing durations and an increase in the proportion of very light piglets at birth. These data provide compelling, albeit preliminary, evidence that caffeine and progesterone should not be used together at the end of gestation.  相似文献

Thirty nine pairs of full sibs were investigated over 6 parities in a long term study on the effects of late pregnancy feed allowance on the occurrence of agalactia post partum and on the performance of sows and piglets. A careful examination of all sows with a rectal temperature exceeding 39.5°C was performed by a veterinarian within the first 48 h after farrowing. Milk-samples were taken from sows with elevated rectal temperatures and showing clinical symptoms of agalactia. During the last 15 days of gestation the sows in the control group were fed 3.4 kg daily and the sows in the experimental group 1.0 kg daily of a commercial type of diet. In 26.6 % of the farrowings in the control group the sows were agalactic whereas the corresponding figure in the experimental group was 14.4%. On clinical examination udder changes were observed in a majority of the diseased sows in both groups. However, the agalactic sows in the control group were generally more affected, with lower water and feed consumption than in the experimental group. No effects of age of the sow (parity number) or length of the gestation period on the incidence of agalactia were demonstrated. The rectal temperature of agalactic sows was significantly higher than in the healthy sows already 1 day before farrowing. The agalactic sows farrowed a larger number of stillborn piglets, which indicates an early establishment of the disease. The number of weaned piglets at 6 weeks did not differ between agalactic and healthy animals. The interval from weaning to first oestrus was not influenced by agalactia in the preceding lactation.  相似文献

Group housing of sows during the mating and gestation period has become the overall common management practice in Sweden. Loose housing is probably less stressful for the animals because it allows them more opportunities to behave naturally, but mixing unfamiliar sows does create a stressful situation due to aggressive interactions, which can lead to food deprivation. The objective of the present study was to investigate and compare the effects of stress in form of food deprivation and ACTH administration at days 13 and 14 of pregnancy (day 1, first day of standing oestrus) in sows. The hormonal secretion of the sows and foetal survival by day 30 of pregnancy was, therefore, studied in 17 crossbred multiparous sows. The sows were randomly allocated into three different groups: one control (C-) group; one food deprived (FD-) group, which was deprived of food from the morning of day 13 of pregnancy until the evening meal on day 14; and a third group (A-), which was given intravenous injections of synthetic ACTH (Synachten Depot), at a dose of 0.01 mg/kg body weight every sixth hour from 6 a.m. on day 13 until 6 a.m. on day 15 of pregnancy. All sows were slaughtered at 30 +/- 2 day of pregnancy and the genital tracts recovered. Total number of corpora lutea (CL), total number of viable or nonviable embryos and foetal survival rates were determined. Samples from the peripheral blood circulation were collected four times a day from day 12 until slaughter, except during days 13-15 when blood was collected every second hour. The blood samples were analysed for cortisol, progesterone, oestrone, prostaglandin F(2alpha)-metabolite, oestrone-sulphate, insulin, free fatty acids and triglycerides. FD-sows had increased levels of cortisol, free fatty acids and progesterone, as well as a lowered level of insulin in the peripheral blood plasma, while A-group sows had increased levels of both cortisol and insulin compared with the C-group. Treatment with ACTH seemed to cause a 2-day delay in the increase of oestrone, from day 19, as seen in the FD- and C-group, to day 21 of pregnancy. At the time of slaughter, there were no significant differences among groups in terms of total number of foetuses and foetal survival rate. The results of the present study suggest a capacity of the sow to compensate for the influence of induced moderate stress at the time of pregnancy when maternal recognition occurs.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine management and seasonal effects on fertility in 1298 Finnish sow units over a 4-year period in 1992-1996. A multivariate analysis of the herd record data was undertaken to study the effect of various management factors on rebreeding rate. Factors found to have an effect were further subjected to time series plotting for seasonal effects. In addition, seasonal effects on the farrowing rate, age of gilts at first mating and littersize as well as the 3-week litterweight were studied. Year and month caused the most significant variation in the rebreeding rate. Moreover, geographical area, herd and way of breeding (mating vs. artificial insemination) were found to be significant determinants of rebreeding rate. Dry sows loosely housed were more likely to be rebred than sows housed in individual stalls. Sows receiving roughage feed (hay, straw) or bedding (straw) were less likely to require rebreeding. A significant seasonal fluctuation in farrowing rate was found with a nadir of 72.6% in August and a high of 80.9% in January. The average farrowing rate for the 4-year period was 77.7%. The age of gilts at first mating showed seasonal variation of 11 days (229.9 +/- 0.5 days in March and 241.4 +/- 0.5 days in November). In conclusion, this study indicates that group housing of dry sows increases the risk of rebreeding. In group housed sows, rebreeding more often occurs after an irregular oestrus-to-oestrus interval in summer-autumn whereas a not-in-pig seems to be a more common finding at late gestation in individually housed sows.  相似文献

The mechanism of action of leptin in pregnant breeding sows, in which hyperphagia is managed through dietary strategies, is yet to be clarified. The aim of this study was to monitor leptin concentrations and their interactions with lactogenic hormones in Large White×Landrace breeding multiparous sows (n=15). All sows showed a normal body condition (mean body condition score: 2.96). Blood samples were collected the day after weaning the litters, at insemination, every 15 days up to day 45 of pregnancy and every 7 days from day 46 to farrowing. At delivery, the placenta was collected for the analysis of leptin and leptin receptor expressions. Plasma leptin levels increased from the end of mid gestation (day 72) and remained high until farrowing (P<0.05). As expected, plasma prolactin (PRL), low during most of pregnancy, increased during the 2 weeks before farrowing (P<0.05), whereas progesterone levels reached plateau at 30 days of gestation and decreased at farrowing (P<0.05). Cortisol levels peaked close to farrowing (P<0.05). Leptin was expressed in the placenta, where the receptor expression analysis showed the presence of the short form but not of the long form. A positive correlation was found between leptin and PRL concentrations during mid (r=0.430; P<0.001) and late (r=0.687; P<0.001) pregnancy, and with progesterone in early pregnancy (r=0.462; P<0.05). During late gestation, a positive correlation was observed between leptin and cortisol (r=0.585; P<0.001). Our results suggested that, in restrictively fed pregnant sows, the leptin levels increased from the end of mid pregnancy to delivery, confirming the presence of leptin resistance. We showed a correlation between leptin and lactogenic hormones during different stages of pregnancy in sows. Lactogenic hormones show pregnancy-specific changes in their secretion and all may become involved in modulating leptin signal.  相似文献
