To evaluate the effects of pulp mill and municipal sewageeffluents on the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) status of northernCanadian rivers, the Northern River Basins Study required an integratedresearch and assessment program consisting of field observation andexperimentation. Analysis of monitoring data collected over 3–13 yshowed that on an annual basis, pulp mills contributed 22% of theP and 20% of the N load discharged from the Wapiti to the Smokyriver, and 6 to 16% of the P load and 4 to 10% of the Nload in the Athabasca River. Despite these low contributions, N and Pconcentrations were elevated below pulp mill discharges on all threerivers during the low discharge period of September to April. Insitu experiments conducted with nutrient diffusing substrata showedthat periphyton biomass was maintained at low levels by insufficient Pin the upper reaches of the Athabasca River and insufficient N+P inthe Wapiti River upstream of point-source discharges. In contrast,effluent loading from pulp mill and sewage inputs alleviated nutrientlimitation downstream of major discharges on both rivers. Experimentsconducted in artificial streams located beside the Athabasca Riverupstream of the first pulp mill showed that P addition increasedperiphyton biomass (expressed as chlorophyll a content) suchthat biomass increased sharply at low P concentrations (2–5µg/L soluble reactive P) and approached saturation at 35µg/L soluble reactive P. As a result of recommendations fromthis integrated program of river monitoring and experimentation,nutrient loading has been reduced to the most affected river(Wapiti-Smoky) and federal and provincial departments of environment arereviewing loading limits for other river reaches.  相似文献

The biology of Corbicula fluminea, the Asiatic clam, in the Vermilion River, Louisiana, as affected by sediment, dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, and sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents was investigated. A point source of high DO water to the Vermilion River established a gradient of DO that decreased as the river moved towards the Gulf of Mexico. Lowering DO levels were exacerbated by municipal sewage treatment plant discharges in the 20 km reach studied. Low dissolved oxygen was associated with reduced Corbicula density in the river and 30-day in-stream growth studies (weight and length) demonstrated that low DO inhibited growth. Generally, if DO was < 1.0 mg l–1 in sediment pore water and/or < 3.0 mg l–1 at the sediment-water interface, growth was significantly impaired (p < 0.05). Corbicula experienced substantial mortality near the STP discharges (up to 70% in 30 days) and laboratory toxicity tests with Ceriodaphnia dubia, a sensitive cladoceran, also strongly suggested discharges were chronically toxic at 6.25–25.0% effluent. Respiration experiments along with environmental measurements of DO, temperature, and STP discharge chemistry support a hypothesis that clam populations are adversely affected by the suite of environmental conditions present in the Vermilion River. Further, growth studies were consistent with observed population densities in situ.  相似文献

A simple, efficient and cost-effective method for municipal wastewater treatment is examined in this paper. The municipal wastewater is treated using an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor followed by flash aeration (FA) as the post-treatment, without implementing aerobic biological processes. The UASB reactor was operated without recycle, at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h and achieved consistent removal of BOD, COD and TSS of 60-70% for more than 12 months. The effect of FA on UASB effluent post-treatment was studied at different HRT (15, 30 and 60 min) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations (low DO = 1-2 mg/L and high DO = 5-6 mg/L). The optimum conditions for BOD, COD and sulfide removal were 30-60 min HRT and high DO concentration inside the FA tank. The final effluent after clarification was characterized by BOD and COD values of 28-35 and 50-58 mg/L, respectively. Sulfides were removed by more than 80%, but the fecal coliform only by ~2 log. The UASB followed by FA is a simple and efficient process for municipal wastewater treatment, except for fecal coliform, enabling water and nutrients recycling to agriculture.  相似文献

The regulation of the Jamari River advanced peak floods by 1–2 months and increased dry-season discharges from 60 to 200 m3 s–1, resulting in water levels approximately 1 m above those recorded before regulation. Daily variation in water level associated with fluctuations in electricity production by the dam propagated to the lower reaches of the tributary Candeias River. Dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, pH, and conductivity measured over 1.5 years on three locations along the regulated and two free-flowing rivers indicated important alterations in the case of oxygen concentrations. DO levels shifted from saturated (7–8 mg l–1) during the flood season (when the spillways were open releasing epilimnetic water) to hypoxic (1.5–3 mg l–1) during the dry season (when the floodgates were closed and only hypolimnetic water used to run the turbines was feeding the river). Fluctuations in water level and variation in dissolved oxygen tended to be greater at the site closest to the dam, gradually attenuating downstream. Mitigation of the downstream effects of river regulation would require modifications in the operation of the dam.  相似文献

Shock loading of toxic substances into natural waterways is apervasive practice which has substantial impacts on their biota.This paper describes the effects of shock (pulse) pollution loadingfrom two major industries on a river and wetland system in southernOntario, Canada. The assessment of shock loading frequencyindicated that sporadic discharges of polluted water occurred onaverage once every other day during the 38 days of monitoring inthe period April, 1986 to November, 1987.To estimate the frequency and intensity of the shock loads, anautomatic pump sampler that was activated by a thresholdconductivity was constructed and deployed. Samples were withdrawnfrom the river when the specific conductivity of the streamexceeded a threshold value of two times background. Backgroundspecific conductivity ranged between 200–250 S cm-1The impact of these shock load discharges on a downstream aquaticplant community in a Class One (Provincially Significant) wetlandwas examined. The area of Thompsons Creek upstream of the CyanamidChemical Company displayed a normal complement of aquatic organismswhile downstream of the companys main discharges for a distance ofnearly 2 km, the stream was barren of nearly all aquatic life.A reef-like structure in which nickel, chromium, and lead reachedrespectively 2900, 2100 and 2210 mg kg-1 dry weight ofsediment was located in the Welland River near the outfall of theAtlas-Mansfield storm sewer adjacent to the Atlas Specialty SteelsCompany. The average flow rate at the outfall of theAtlas-Mansfield storm sewer into the Welland River wasapproximately 28400 m3 day-1 in 1986 (MOE 1987). Dissolved free amino acid (DFAA) concentration and composition and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration were measured over 16 months at three depths in hypertrophic Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa and in its two perenially inflowing rivers. The range of DFAA concentrations in the reservoir and both rivers were similar with dominant DFAA consisting of serine, glycine, alanine and ornithine in all three systems. The range of DOC concentrations in the rivers was 1.5–11.1 mg l–1, the major river (Crocodile) having about twice the DOC concentration of the Magalies River. The DFAA/DOC ratios ranged between 0.02–1.1% in the Crocodile River and 0.13–3.7% in the Magalies River. DFAA and DOC concentrations were positively correlated to the Magalies River flow, but for the Crocodile River, which received domestic and industrial effluents, DOC was inversely correlated to flow. The source of DFAA in both rivers was mainly terrestrial, in contrast to the main DOC source in the Crocodile River which was the effluents. The DFAA load of the Crocodile River ranged between 0.22 and 208 kg C d–1.DOC (5.0–24.8mg l–1) in Hartbeespoort Dam generally decreased with depth but DFAA (15–4800 nmol l–1) concentration showed no clear trend. The DFAA/DOC ratios varied between 0.02 and 2.9%. DFAA concentrations were correlated (r = 0.3, n = 30, p = 0.04) with bacterial numbers at 0 and 10 m only while no significant correlations were found with bacterial production, chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton primary and EDOC (extracellular DOC) production at any depth. The rate of bacterial utilization of DFAA was low compared with data from other lakes. Diurnal phytoplankton production of DFAA in the euphotic zone of the whole lake was calculated to vary between 268 and 30 780 t C d–1 indicating autochthonous DFAA sources were dominant to allochthonous DFAA sources. The autochthonous production of DFAA was > 2 × gross bacterial production of the euphotic zone indicating that although DFAA concentrations were frequently < 10 g C l–1, the rate of DFAA production exceeded bacterial requirements.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sewage treatment on total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in domestic effluents and the contribution of urban sewage treatment facilities to THg and MeHg in rivers. We determined the concentrations of THg and MeHg in unfiltered samples of untreated and treated domestic sewage from the three treatment facilities and receiving river water within the City of Winnipeg. The concentrations of THg in the Red and Assiniboine rivers ranged from 3–31 ng/L. THg was related positively to suspended sediment concentrations in the rivers. The concentrations of MeHg in these rivers were usually 0.2–0.3 ng/L. THg concentrations in raw sewage varied widely, from 2–150 ng/L. Treatment removed an average of 88% of this mercury. MeHg concentrations in raw sewage were 0.5–4.3 ng/L, however, after treatment at two treatment facilities, MeHg was greatly reduced, usually to 0.1–0.4 ng/L. Most treated sewage, therefore, had MeHg concentrations that were similar to levels in the receiving rivers and the effect of discharged effluent was usually a change of about 2% or less on concentrations in the rivers. However, one of the facilities (the West End plant) was discharging higher concentrations of MeHg, up to 2 ng/L, causing calculated increases of up to 11% in the concentration of MeHg in the Assiniboine River.  相似文献

Triad studies consisting of chemical characterizations in sediment, sediment toxicity testing, and benthic community assessments were used to determine the impacts of Motiva Enterprises oil refinery effluent [primarily polynuclear aromatic hydorcarbons (PAHs)] on aquatic biota in the Delaware River. Triad studies were conducted at 15 near-field, mid-field, and far-field sites near the Refinery in the Delaware River during the spring and summer of 2001 and 2002. Fingerprinting analysis showed that Motiva-related PAHs may be present at four near-field sites. A summary of all Triad data by site for 2001 shows a strong case for contaminant-induced degradation at one near-field site in the discharge canal of the Refinery and two far-field sites as all three lines of evidence suggest impairment. Stressful conditions for benthic communities at the near-field site include elevated temperature conditions and various pesticides (Dieldrin, 4,4′-DDD and 4,4′-DDT). Toxicity at the near-field site may also be related to the presence of pesticides exceeding sediment quality guidelines. Due to exceedances of individual Effects Range Low (ERL) guidelines for two individual PAHs, the Motiva effluent cannot be eliminated as a potential stressor at the near-field site during the summer of 2001. A summary of Triad data for the 15 Delaware River sites sampled in 2002 shows only one mid-field site where all three lines of evidence suggest impairment. Toxicity and benthic community impairment at this mid-field site may be related to PCBs and low molecular weight PAHs. Three individual PAH ERL values were exceeded at three near-field sites in 2002. The source of these PAHs is a combination of both background signature and the Motiva effluent. The Florida Everglades is an oligotrophic, phosphorus (P)-limited wetland that is experiencing eutrophication as a result of P-enriched agricultural runoff. Effects of P enrichment on diel water-column dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) profiles were measured along nutrient gradients downstream of agricultural discharges in two northern Everglades marshes and in field enclosures (mesocosms) exposed to different P loading rates. Reference (i.e., water-column TP < 10 g/L) areas in the marsh interior were characterized by strong diel fluctuations in DO, and aerobic conditions generally were maintained throughout the diel cycle. Enriched stations (water-column TP elevated to between 12 and 131 g/L) were characterized by dampened diel fluctuations and reduced DO, and the extent of these changes was correlated strongly with marsh P concentrations. Mean DO declined from between 1.81 and 7.52 mg/L at reference stations to between 0.04 and 3.18 mg/L in highly enriched areas. Similarly, minimum DO declined from between 0.33 and 5.86 mg/L to between 0 and 0.84 mg/L with increasing enrichment, and the frequency of extremely low DO (< 1 mg/L) increased from between 0 and 20% to as high as 100% in the most enriched areas. Diel oxygen profiles in P-enriched mesocosms declined progressively with time; all loading treatments exhibited similar DO during the 1st year of P loading, but concentrations declined significantly at higher loads by year 3. Reductions in water-column DO with increased P enrichment were associated with reduced oxygen production by submersed periphyton and macrophytes and increased sediment oxygen demand. Increased emergent macrophyte cover in enriched areas likely contributed to these changes by shading the water-column, which inhibited submerged productivity, and by providing inputs of nutrient-rich detritus, which increased oxygen demand. Declines in marsh DO are associated with other ecological changes such as increased anaerobic metabolism and an increase in invertebrate taxa that tolerate low DO. While background oxygen concentrations in wetlands can be lower than those in lakes and rivers, declines in water-column DO caused by eutrophication can result in biological impacts similar to those in other aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The performance of continuous flow intermittent decant type sequencing batch (CFID) reactor treating the effluent of an UASB reactor treating domestic wastewater and operated at 8 h hydraulic retention time (HRT) was investigated. The CFID was operated at three different HRTs (22, 8 and 6 h) and three different dissolved oxygen (DO) patterns (<0.5, 2.5–3.5 and 3.5–4.5 mg/L). The highest effluent quality was observed at the 8 h HRT and 2.5–3.5 mg/L DO concentration. At this operational condition, the average BOD, TSS, ammonia nitrogen and fecal coliform removal efficiencies were 83, 90, 74 and 99 %, respectively. The CFID is a promising post-treatment option for existing UASB systems, with a final effluent quality that comply with receiving water and effluent reuse criteria.  相似文献

Artificial sweeteners have been widely incorporated in human food products for aid in weight loss regimes, dental health protection and dietary control of diabetes. Some of these widely used compounds can pass non-degraded through wastewater treatment systems and are subsequently discharged to groundwater and surface waters. Measurements of artificial sweeteners in rivers used for drinking water production are scarce. In order to determine the riverine concentrations of artificial sweeteners and their usefulness as a tracer of wastewater at the scale of an entire watershed, we analyzed samples from 23 sites along the entire length of the Grand River, a large river in Southern Ontario, Canada, that is impacted by agricultural activities and urban centres. Municipal water from household taps was also sampled from several cities within the Grand River Watershed. Cyclamate, saccharin, sucralose, and acesulfame were found in elevated concentrations despite high rates of biological activity, large daily cycles in dissolved oxygen and shallow river depth. The maximum concentrations that we measured for sucralose (21 µg/L), cyclamate (0.88 µg/L), and saccharin (7.2 µg/L) are the highest reported concentrations of these compounds in surface waters to date anywhere in the world. Acesulfame persists at concentrations that are up to several orders of magnitude above the detection limit over a distance of 300 km and it behaves conservatively in the river, recording the wastewater contribution from the cumulative population in the basin. Acesulfame is a reliable wastewater effluent tracer in rivers. Furthermore, it can be used to assess rates of nutrient assimilation, track wastewater plume dilution, separate human and animal waste contributions and determine the relative persistence of emerging contaminants in impacted watersheds where multiple sources confound the usefulness of other tracers. The effects of artificial sweeteners on aquatic biota in rivers and in the downstream Great Lakes are largely unknown.  相似文献

The primary objective of the Northern Rivers Basins Study (NRBS)was to advance the understanding of how anthropogenic developments haveimpacted the ecology of the Peace, Athabasca and Slave rivers, Canada.To investigate these multiple stressor impacts, the NRBS used acumulative effects assessment (CEA) based upon a weight of evidenceapproach. This CEA determined the exposure and effects of multiplestressors on these systems and included experimental verification ofcausality and linkage of this understanding to field data. Fish studiesconfirmed that dioxins and furans occur in the food web at low levelsacross the basins; detection frequencies for all2,3,7,8-substituted dioxin/furan congeners (2,3,7,8 TCDD/TCDF)were highest near bleached kraft pulp mills. PCDD/Fs, rather thanPCBs or organochlorine pesticides, were the chemicals of concern forhuman exposure. In addition, the recent decline in concentrations ofdioxins and furans in fish was commensurate with improvements in pulpmill treatment technologies. Throughout the basins, enrichment occurredbelow pulp mill and municipal discharges. Multiple stressor effects ofpulp mill effluent were separated from one another by using experimentsthat demonstrated that the primary impact of the mill effluent wasnutrient enrichment. River state was also greatly influenced byhydrologic impacts. In particularly, the Bennett Dam changed the ecologyof the Peace-Slave river-delta systems more than 1500~km downstream,while climate variability was an important contributing factor for thesedelta impacts. Notable contributions of the NRBS model were thecooperation among governments, aboriginal peoples, non-governmentorganizations, industry and other stakeholders, and the two-waycommunications flow among the scientific community and these groups.NRBS science was also deemed relevant because 16 questions forwarded bystakeholders focused the Study's CEA on specific issues of importancewithin the basin. In summary, the NRBS model of CEA included four keycomponents: (1) communication of stakeholder priorities to producerelevant science questions; (2) pursuit of the best availablescientific understanding of ecosystem impacts by engaginginterdisciplinary science teams; (3) assessment of futureenvironmental condition through monitoring and follow-upinvestigation; and (4) communication of results to managers toproduce appropriate regulatory change. This CEA model combines theseelements with scientific rigor to generate meaningful information tostakeholders while also improving regional assessments of riverbasins.  相似文献

This two-part study compared the efficacy of different plant species to extract Se from soils irrigated with Se-laden effluent. The species used were: Brassica napus L. (canola), Brassica juncea Czern L. and Coss (Indian mustard), and Hordeum vulgare L. (barley). In Study 1 we irrigated the plants with a saline effluent containing 0.150 mg Se L–1, while in Study 2, the same species were planted in a saline soil selenized with 2 mg Se L–1. Plants were simultaneously harvested 120 days after planting. In Study 1, there were only slight effects of treatment on dry matter (DM) yield. Plant Se concentrations averaged 21 g Se g–1DM for the Brassica species, and 4.0 g Se g–1 DM for barley. Total Se added to soils via effluent decreased by 40% for Brassica species and by 20% for barley. In Study 2, total DM decreased for all species grown in saline soils containing Se. Plant Se concentrations averaged 75 g g–1 DM for Brassica species and 12 g Se g–1 DM for barley. Total Se added to soils prior to planting decreased by 40% for Brassica species and up to 12% for barley. In both studies, plant accumulation of Se accounted for at least 50% of the Se removed in soils planted to Brassica and up to 20% in soils planted to barley. Results show that although the tested Brassica species led to a significant reduction in Se added to soil via use of Se-laden effluent, additional plantings are necessary to further decrease Se content in the soil.  相似文献

Three human cytochrome P450s, 3A4, 2C9 and 1A2, were each co-expressed with NADPH-P450 reductase in Escherichia coli and used in the preparative synthesis of drug metabolites. Low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration (<1%) during expression was found to be critical for producing active P450s. Control of temperature, pH and glycerol supplementation in 10-L fermentations enhanced enzyme expression 31–86%. Additional improvements were obtained by altering media formulations, resulting in bicistronic expression levels of 890, 1,800 and 1,010 nmol/L for 3A4, 2C9 and 1A2, respectively. The P450 titers achieved in fermentors exceeded those in flask fermentations by 3- to 6-fold in this study and up to 10-fold when compared with previously reported literature [FEBS Lett (1996) 397:210–214, Arch Biochem Biophys (1996) 327:254–259, Biochem Pharmacol (1998) 55:1315–1325, Drug Metab Pharmacokinet (2003) 18:42–47, Nat Biotechnol (1997) 15:784–788; Metab Eng (2000) 2:115–125]. Intact cells and isolated membranes obtained from 10-L fermentations were used to establish an efficient bioconversion system for the generation of metabolites. To demonstrate the utility of this approach, known metabolites of the anabolic steroid testosterone, the anti-inflammatory agent diclofenac and the analgesic agent phenacetin, were generated using 3A4, 2C9 and 1A2, respectively. The reaction conditions were optimized for pH, temperature, DO concentration, use of co-solvent and glucose supplementation. Conversion yields of 29–93% were obtained from 1-L reactions, enabling isolation of 59 mg 6-hydroxytestosterone, 110 mg 4-hydroxydiclofenac and 88 mg acetaminophen.  相似文献

This is the first report of the detection of two new anti-influenza drugs, peramivir (PER) and laninamivir (LAN), in Japanese sewage effluent and river waters. Over about 1 year from October 2013 to July 2014, including the influenza prevalence season in January and February 2014, we monitored for five anti-influenza drugs—oseltamivir (OS), oseltamivir carboxylate (OC), zanamivir (ZAN), PER, and LAN—in river waters and in sewage effluent flowing into urban rivers of the Yodo River system in Japan. The dynamic profiles of these anti-influenza drugs were synchronized well with that of the numbers of influenza patients treated with the drugs. The highest levels in sewage effluents and river waters were, respectively, 82 and 41 ng/L (OS), 347 and 125 ng/L (OC), 110 and 35 ng/L (ZAN), 64 and 11 ng/L (PER), and 21 and 9 ng/L (LAN). However, application of ozone treatment before discharge from sewage treatment plants was effective in reducing the levels of these anti-influenza drugs in effluent. The effectiveness of the ozone treatment and the drug dependent difference in susceptibility against ozone were further evidenced by ozonation of a STP effluent in a batch reactor. These findings should help to promote further environmental risk assessment of the generation of drug-resistant influenza viruses in aquatic environments.  相似文献

The study on the operational conditions of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) in the channel of oxidation ditch (OD) without the need for a special anoxic tank was carried out based on lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments using real domestic wastewater. The influence of sludge loading and component proportion in influent, temperature, hydraulic retention time (HRT), dissolved oxygen (DO) and operational mode on SND was investigated. The result indicated that the optimal DO (ODO) of SND occurrence was confirmed majorly by the sludge loading of influent and temperature, the high TCOD/NH3–N and short HRT can enhance the occurrence of SND. A new operational mode was proposed that achieved a higher removal efficiency of 60–70% for total nitrogen by SND with HRT of 4–6 h, and the concentrations of NH3–N and TN in effluent are less than 5 and 15 mg/L, respectively.  相似文献

Macrobenthos and physicochemical conditions in the lower 39 km of the Neches River estuary were studied from August, 1984 to May, 1985. The results were compared with data collected in 1971–1972. Between 1972 and 1984 the permitted BOD waste load in the tidal Neches River was reduced from 123 125 kg d to 8717 kg d. River discharge and dissolved oxygen concentrations were consistently higher and salinity was lower, during the same seasons, during the 1984–1985 study. A total of 50 taxa of macrobenthos were collected in 1971–1972 and 104 taxa were collected in 1984–1985. The numbers of taxa per collection at each station in 1984–1985 were at least twice those found in 1971–1972. Minimum densities in 1984–1985 were much higher than the maximum densities in 1971–1972 at all stations. Patterns of dominance, Sorenson's similarity index, and diversity ( ) values indicated improved water quality in 1984–1985. Statistical analysis of macrobenthic diversity indicated significant differences between upper estuary and lower estuary stations in 1971–1972. No significant differences were found in 1984–1985. Significant differences in numbers of taxa, macrobenthos densities, and values between the two studies were found. Reductions of waste loads, increased river discharge, and deepening of the navigation channel were among the factors that probably contributed most to the changes in community structure of the macrobenthos observed.  相似文献

The effect of guanidinoethanesulfonic acid (GES) on rat electrocorticograms (ECoG) and the effects of -aminobutyric acid (GABA) and GABA-agonists on the ECoG changes induced by GES were studied. Sporadic spike discharges began 2–5 min after 1 mol GES/10 l on filter paper was applied to the pia mater of the left sensorimotor cortex; spike discharges extended to the opposite cerebral hemisphere 60 min after the onset of the ipsilateral spike discharges. The spike discharges with a frequency of 5–10 spikes/min lasted until the end of the 4 hour recording. The induced spike discharges were suppressed when the original GES soaked filter paper was replaced by one containing GES (1 mol) supplement combined with taurine (1 mol/10 l). GABA (1 mol) and its receptor agonist, muscimol (10nmol) and (3R)-(–)-4-amino-3-hydroxybutyric acid (1 mol) also suppressed the GES-induced spike discharges when applied topically. Diazepam (DZP) (10 mg/kg) suppressed the GES-induced spike discharges 10 min after i.p. injection, but phenobarbital (20 mg/kg) increased the frequency and voltage of spike discharges 100 min following subcutaneous administration. Intraperitoneal injection of either valproate (200 mg/kg) or phenytoin (25 mg/kg), after the completion of the spike discharges, showed no effect. These findings suggest that neurotransmission or neuromodulatory effects of taurine participate in GES-induced seizure activity, and that GABAA and DZP receptors may play a role in the mechanism that suppresses GES-induced seizures.  相似文献

A more or less continuous load of pesticides has been noted in the River Meuse in recent years. In April 1996, when high concentrations (up toca. 1 g 1–1) of the insecticide diazinon were measured in the River Meuse at the Belgian-Dutch border, the maximum concentration for drinking water production was exceeded. This was alerted after activity changes of fish and daphnids in the biological monitoring systems (RIZA). These observations were compared with literature toxicity data of diazinon, in order to determine the ecological impact of this diazinon discharge on the aquatic macroinvertebrates. LC50 values of several aquatic macroinvertebrate species were exceeded. In addition, a high mortality was observed in bioassays with the midgeChironomus riparius and the caddisflyHydropsyche angustipennis. It is inferred that the species composition of the macrofauna community in the River Meuse is likely to be reduced by such an accident. Recolonization of the River Meuse by sensitive macrofauna species may therefore be prevented by incidental pesticide discharges.  相似文献

Summary A novel Acinetobacter sp. BTJR-10 isolated from highly acidic (pH 2.5–4.5) rubber latex centrifugation effluent with high COD (22000 mg/L) and BOD (5000 mg/L). This strain could effect 39.5% COD reduction on free cell inoculation of effluent without incorporation of additional nutrients after 8 days. Calcium alginate immobilized cells showed 16.4% and 25% COD reduction after 6 hrs. without aeration and after 1 hr. with mild aeration under batch process respectively. Whereas 44.0% COD reduction could be achieved after 6 hrs. on continuous treatment in a packed bed reactor with mild aeration. Further, even after 3 cycles 37% COD reduction was recorded with continuous treatment.  相似文献
