Summary The effects of a gametic disequilibrium (DSE) in an autotetraploid population on response to selection as measured by the covariance of selection were investigated. The theoretical responses were calculated for mass selection [Mass (1)] and half-sib progeny test selection (HSPT) in a two-allele (B and b), single locus, autotetraploid population. The complexity of calculations precluded analytical expressions for the covariances so numerical analysis was used assuming the following genetic models: monoplex dominance, partial monoplex dominance, duplex dominance, partial duplex dominance, and additive gene action. The results indicated the DSE could greatly affect the covariance of selection. For a constant allele frequency the DSE might double the covariance expected with selection in a population at random mating equilibrium (RME) of gametes, but in other instances approach zero. For all genetic models and the two breeding methods investigated the covariance of selection was always increased when the frequency of BB gamete exceeded p2 (where p is frequency of allele B) and decreased when the frequency of BB gamete was less than p2. The possible incorporation of this information into a long term breeding program and some other ramifications were briefly discussed. With the DSE the covariances of selection with HSPT and Mass (1) had a proportionality of 1:2, respectively, with the additive genetic model, but this relationship rarely occurred for other genetic models. The deviations from this ratio were not large in comparison to differences between selection in populations in DSE and RME.Cooperative investigations of the Alfalfa Production Research Unit, United State Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station, Reno, Nevada. Summary Male and female larvae ofDrosophila melanogaster at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of age were placed upon a standard type of food to which14C labelled formaldehyde had been added. They were left to feed for specified periods of time and then removed and autoradiographs were prepared. The technique used demonstrated that formaldehyde enters the male and female gonad with penetration equally in all regions. The differential sensitivity demonstrated by genetic techniques seems, thus, to be a consequence of differential response to the presence of formaldehyde rather than to differential penetration. It has been pointed out that a positive autoradiograph indicates the presence of14 C atoms but does not tell anything about the compounds in which they are present.Work carried out during term as Fellow, Agricultural Research Council of United Kingdom at Institute of Animal Genetics, Edinburgh/ScotlandWith 5 figures in the text  相似文献

11 , Evolution 34 : 292–305) equations for predicting the evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) through frequency‐dependent sexual selection, and frequency‐independent natural selection, were tested against results obtained from a stochastic genetic simulation model. The SSD evolved faster than predicted, due to temporary increases in the genetic variance brought about by directional selection. Predictions for the magnitude of SSD at equilibrium were very accurate for weak sexual selection. With stronger sexual selection the total response was greater than predicted. Large changes in SSD can occur without significant long‐term change in the genetic correlation between the sexes. Our results suggest that genetic correlations constrain both the short‐term and long‐term evolution of SSD less than predicted by the Lande model.  相似文献

Genetic polymorphism in varietal identification and genetic improvement   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary New sources of genetic polymorphisms promise significant additions to the number of useful genetic markers in agricultural plants and animals, and prompt this review of potential applications of polymorphic genetic markers in plant and animal breeding. Two major areas of application can be distinguished. The first is based on the utilization of genetic markers to determine genetic relationships. These applications include varietal identification, protection of breeder's rights, and parentage determination. The second area of application is based on the use of genetic markers to identify and map loci affecting quantitative traits, and to monitor these loci during introgression or selection programs. A variety of breeding applications based on these possibilities can be envisaged for Selfers, particularly for those species having a relatively small genome size. These applications include: (i) screening genetic resources for useful quantitative trait alleles, and introgression of chromosome segments containing these alleles from resource strain to commercial variety; (ii) development of improved pure lines out of a cross between two existing commercial varieties; and (iii) development of crosses showing increased hybrid vigor. Breeding applications in segregating populations are more limited, particularly in species with a relatively large genome size. Potential applications, however, include: (i) preliminary selection of young males in dairy cattle on the basis of evaluated chromosomes of their proven sire; (ii) genetic analysis of resource strains characterized by high values for a particular quantitative trait, and introgression of chromosome segments carrying alleles contributing to the high values from resource strain to recipient strain.Contribution from The Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Bet Dagan, Israel, No. 767-E, 1983 Series  相似文献

Summary The probability of negative analysis of variance estimates of genetic variance components due to sampling error (Ps) was investigated. The objectives were to evaluate the magnitude of Ps, to compare Ps for estimates of A 2 and D 2 , and to compare Ps for genetic variance component estimates from the nested and factorial mating designs. Ps was defined in terms of ratios of mean squares and the F distribution was used to calculate probabilities of the negative estimates. The results indicated that Ps is often greater than 0.20 for D 2 . It is generally lower for A 2 than for D 2 , and lower for the factorial mating design than the nested mating design.Technical Contribution No. 2589 from the South Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, Clemson University  相似文献

Genetic parameter estimates for pre-weaning weight traits in Dorper sheep   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Genetic parameters were estimated for birth-, 42-day, and 100-day (weaning) weight in the Dorper flock of the Glen Agricultural Institute in South Africa. Direct heritability estimates of 0.11, 0.28 and 0.20 and maternal heritability estimates of 0.10, 0.10 and 0.10 were obtained for body weights at birth, 42 and 100 days, respectively. The corresponding genetic correlation estimates between direct and maternal effects were 0.35, −0.63 and −0.58, respectively. Both direct and maternal genetic correlation estimates among the traits were of moderate to high magnitude and positive. It is concluded that the traits can be improved by selection with no serious antagonisms among traits studied.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this article was to extend the model used to predict selection response with selfed progeny from 2 alleles per locus to a model which is general for number and frequency of alleles at loci. To accomplish this, 4 areas had to be dealt with: 1) simplification of the derivation and calculation of the condensed coefficients of identity; 2) presentation of the genetic variances expressed among and within selfed progenies as linear function of 5 population parameters; 3) presentation of selection response equations for selfed progenies as functions of these 5 population parameters; and 4) to identify a set of progeny to evaluate, such that one might be able to estimate these 5 population parameters. The five population parameters used in predicting gains were the additive genetic variance, the dominance variance, the covariance of additive and homozygous dominance deviations, the variance of the homozygous dominance deviations and a squared inbreeding depression term.Contribution from the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station.  Genetic gain equations are developed for selection on multiple traits using either multi- or univariate best linear unbiased predictors (BLUP) and for selection under controlled and open pollination and polymix mating schemes. The equations assume an infinite population and account for the effects of selection. A comparison with simulated populations under the same mating schemes show that the gain equations predict selection response well, with the predictions having some upward bias. The gain equations are used to compare across mating schemes, to compare univariate to multivariate analyses, and to measure the reduction in the rate of genetic gain due to selection disequilibrium. Results show controlled pollination schemes can offer as much as a 56% advantage in genetic gain relative to open pollination. The reduction in the rate of genetic gain due to selection disequilibrium is approximately 27% under controlled pollination for the breeding goals studied. The results show a limited benefit in using multivariate analyses for predicting breeding values. Received: 20 April 1997 / Accepted: 8 October 1997  相似文献

A second order perturbation theory is developed to show the difference between the average artery-vein temperature Tm and the local average tissue temperature theta. This theory demonstrates that the closure approximation in the Weinbaum-Jiji bioheat equation does not require that theta = Tm and that although the difference between these two temperatures is second order the magnitude of the countercurrent convection terms in the Weinbaum-Jiji equation can be of order unity. The theory also shows that to second order this new bioheat equation is the same as the simplified set of one-dimensional model equations used in Baish et al.  相似文献

Summary A set of complex crosses with multiple crosses as female parents were made using multiple pollen in turnip rape (Brassica campestris L.). These multiple cross — multiple pollen hybrids (mucromphs) were evaluated for a large number of quantitative characters including yield. New methods were proposed to study such genetic material in depth so as to formulate suitable strategies to breed for attractive seed yield.Part of the Ph. D. Differential equations for the kinetics of complementary replicating macromolecules in a flow reactor are derived. It is shown that such a model has many features in common with the differential equation for direct replication, the replicator equation. Two special cases of replication, and the influence of mutation on them, have been studied in detail. In the case of first-order mass action kinetics--the quasi-species model--complementary replication, like direct replication, exhibits an error threshold for the replication accuracy, below which the genetic information is lost. In turns out that the long-time behavior of many special cases of the second-order kinetics model can be described in terms of second-order replicator equations, although this is not possible in general.  相似文献

Summary Maximum yield under highly unpredictable environments should be associated with selection of genotypes with superior performance across good and poor environments. Several stability parameters have been proposed to identify superior genotypes over a wide range of environments. None of these has been used as selection criteria, however, because of their low heritability. The objective of the study presented here was to compare the relative efficiency of predicted gain from indirect selection among three stability parameters: the coefficient of regression (b), deviation from regression (S d 2 ), and principal components scores (PC) from the AMMI model; two indices including mean yield and a stability parameter; and three indices involving yield at the best, the worst, and an intermediate environment. Two hundred S1 families from each of two sorghum populations (TP24D and KP9B) were evaluated at four dry-land evironments over 2 years. The low heritability estimates and the low genetic correlation between the various stability parameters and mean yield resulted in their low relative efficiency as indirect selection criteria for high yield across environments. However, when the parameters were combined with mean yield over all to create indices, the relative efficiency increased for all the environments. In terms of resource allocation, these indices were not as efficient as mean productivity, rank summation, and selection index that involved fewer environments in their estimation.Contribution no. 9820 of Agricultural Research Division, Univ. of Neb. and no. 92-203-J of Kansas Exp. Sexual dimorphism in genetic parameters is examined for wing dimensions of Drosophila melanogaster. Data are fit to a quantitative genetic model where phenotypic variance is a linear function of additive genetic autosomal variance (common to both sexes), additive genetic X-linked variances distinct for each sex, variance due to common rearing environment of families, residual environmental variance, random error variance due to replication, and variance due to measurement error and developmental asymmetry (left vs. right sides). Polygenic dosage compensation and its effect on genetic variances and covariances between sexes is discussed. Variance estimates for wing length and other wing dimensions highly correlated with length support the hypothesis that the Drosophila system of dosage compensation will cause male X-linked genetic variance to be substantially larger than female X-linked variance. Results for various wing dimensions differ, suggesting that the level of dosage compensation may differ for different traits. Genetic correlations between sexes for the same trait are presented. Total additive genetic correlations are near unity for most wing traits; this indicates that selection in the same direction in both sexes would have a minor effect on changing the magnitude of difference between sexes. Additive X-linked correlations suggest some genotype x sex interactions for X-linked effects.  相似文献

Summary A matrix program to predict short term genetic gain from single trait selection for milk yield was developed. Rate of genetic gain was calculated as the annual change in the mean breeding value of all producing females. Several parameters sets representing various selection policies were used to examine situations pertinent to dairy populations of the United States. Approach to the asymptotic rates of genetic gain within the model varied with the choice of parameters, but even with consistent selection policies, predicted total genetic gain in the first 10 years was only half of the expected from classical theory. Considerable year to year variation in the rate of gain occurred. Early gains were more dependent on female selection decisions than gains during the steady state. In a two-phase model, the approach to the linear rate of gain in the second phase was accelerated by starting with an ongoing improvement program, but considerable delays still existed. Selection for sex- limited traits such as milk yield, which require pedigree selection and a waiting time for progeny test results reached asymptotic rates more slowly than previously assumed.  相似文献

The genetic basis of complex diseases is expected to be highly heterogeneous, with complex interactions among multiple disease loci and environment factors. Due to the multi-dimensional property of interactions among large number of genetic loci, efficient statistical approach has not been well developed to handle the high-order epistatic complexity. In this article, we introduce a new approach for testing genetic epistasis in multiple loci using an entropy-based statistic for a case-only design. The entropy-based statistic asymptotically follows a χ2 distribution. Computer simulations show that the entropy-based approach has better control of type I error and higher power compared to the standard χ2 test. Motivated by a schizophrenia data set, we propose a method for measuring and testing the relative entropy of a clinical phenotype, through which one can test the contribution or interaction of multiple disease loci to a clinical phenotype. A sequential forward selection procedure is proposed to construct a genetic interaction network which is illustrated through a tree-based diagram. The network information clearly shows the relative importance of a set of genetic loci on a clinical phenotype. To show the utility of the new entropy-based approach, it is applied to analyze two real data sets, a schizophrenia data set and a published malaria data set. Our approach provides a fast and testable framework for genetic epistasis study in a case-only design.  相似文献

Summary Use of chromosomal markers can accelerate genetic progress for quantitative traits in pedigree selection programs by providing early information on Mendelian segregation effects for individual progeny. Potential effectiveness of selection using markers is determined by the amount of additive genetic variance traced from parents to progeny by the markers. Theoretical equations for the amount of additive genetic variance associated with a marker were derived at the individual level and for a segregating population in joint linkage equilibrium. Factors considered were the number of quantitative trait loci linked to the marker, their individual effects, and recombination rates with the marker. Subsequently, the expected amount of genetic variance associated with a marker in a segregating population was derived. In pedigree selection programs in segregating populations, a considerable fraction of the genetic variance on a chromosome is expected to be associated with a marker located on that chromosome. For an average chromosome in the bovine, this fraction is approximately 40% of the Mendelian segregation variance contributed by the chromosome. The effects of interference and position of the marker on this expectation are relative small. Length of the chromosome has a large effect on the expected variance. Effectiveness of MAS is, however, greatly reduced by lack of polymorphism at the marker and inaccuracy of estimation of chromosome substitution effects. The size of the expected amount of genetic variance associated with a chromosomal marker indicates that, even when the marker is not the active locus, large chromosome substitution effects are not uncommon in segregating populations.  相似文献

Genetic variance is a central parameter in quantitative genetics and breeding. Assessing changes in genetic variance over time as well as the genome is therefore of high interest. Here, we extend a previously proposed framework for temporal analysis of genetic variance using the pedigree-based model, to a new framework for temporal and genomic analysis of genetic variance using marker-based models. To this end, we describe the theory of partitioning genetic variance into genic variance and within-chromosome and between-chromosome linkage-disequilibrium, and how to estimate these variance components from a marker-based model fitted to observed phenotype and marker data. The new framework involves three steps: (i) fitting a marker-based model to data, (ii) sampling realisations of marker effects from the fitted model and for each sample calculating realisations of genetic values and (iii) calculating the variance of sampled genetic values by time and genome partitions. Analysing time partitions indicates breeding programme sustainability, while analysing genome partitions indicates contributions from chromosomes and chromosome pairs and linkage-disequilibrium. We demonstrate the framework with a simulated breeding programme involving a complex trait. Results show good concordance between simulated and estimated variances, provided that the fitted model is capturing genetic complexity of a trait. We observe a reduction of genetic variance due to selection and drift changing allele frequencies, and due to selection inducing negative linkage-disequilibrium.Subject terms: Genetic variation, Quantitative trait, Agricultural genetics, Plant breeding, Agriculture  相似文献

Linseed is one of the most important oil seed crop in the central highlands of Ethiopia for which yield enhancement is the major breeding purposes and genotypic variability is important for selection in any breeding programs. However, shortage of improved varieties’ that provides optimum seed yield is one of the major constraints of the crop. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the genetic variability and association among quantitative traits of 36 linseed genotypes. The experiment was conducted in 2018 main cropping season by using simple lattice design. The analysis of variances reveled highly significant difference among the genotype for most of traits considered in present study. High phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation was recorded for tiller per plant, harvest index, oil yield (kg ha−1), and seed yield (ton ha-1) number of capsules per plant. High heritability along with genetic advance was observed for seed yield (tones ha-1), oil yield (kg ha-1) harvest index which indicates selection of these traits at early generation would be effective. Oil yield (kg ha−1) harvest index and number of capsules plant −1 showed highly significant positive with seed yield (ton ha−1). Cluster analysis revealed that 36 linseed genotypes were grouped into two clusters and four genotypes remain ungrouped. The maximum inter clusters distance was observed between clusters II and the local check. The data set was reduced into four significant principal components (PCs) that comprise (80%) of the variance. The first PC accounted for 34% of the variances that implies greater proportion of variable information explained by PC1. The traits, which contributed more to PC1, were seed yield per plant, primary branches per plant, secondary branches per plant and plant height showed positive association and had positive direct effect on seed yield. This indicates that any improvement of oil yield and harvest index would result in substantial increase on seed.  相似文献

Inbreeding depression for fitness traits is a key issue in evolutionary biology and conservation genetics. The magnitude of inbreeding depression, though, may critically depend on the efficiency of genetic purging, the elimination or recessive deleterious mutations by natural selection after they are exposed by inbreeding. However, the detection and quantification of genetic purging for nonlethal mutations is a rather difficult task. Here, we present two comprehensive sets of experiments with Drosophila aimed at detecting genetic purging in competitive conditions and quantifying its magnitude. We obtain, for the first time in competitive conditions, an estimate for the predictive parameter, the purging coefficient (d), that quantifies the magnitude of genetic purging, either against overall inbreeding depression (d ≈ 0.3), or against the component ascribed to nonlethal alleles (dNL ≈ 0.2). We find that competitive fitness declines at a high rate when inbreeding increases in the absence of purging. However, in moderate size populations under competitive conditions, inbreeding depression need not be too dramatic in the medium to short term, as the efficiency of purging is also very high. Furthermore, we find that purging occurred under competitive conditions also reduced the inbreeding depression that is expressed in the absence of competition.  相似文献

Summary The blood group ABO(H) determinants are major allogenic antigens in both erythrocytes and tissue of man. These antigens and related carbohydrates are markers of cellular maturation and differentiation in many epithelial tissues and have recently attracted great interest as tumor-associated antigens. Previous studies of endometrial tissues have indicated that glycosylation in this tissue may be related to hormonal stimulation. We have investigated the immunohistochemical distribution of type-2 chain histo-blood group-related carbohydrates in specimens of normal, cycling endometria obtained from hysterectomies on women with known ABO/Lewis erythrocyte type and saliva secretor status. N-acetyllactosamine and Lex were demonstrated to be uninfluenced by the genetic background. A and Aley antigens were exclusively demonstrated in endometria from blood group A individuals, while Ley was expressed in endometria from blood group 0 individuals mainly. The precursor N-acetyllactosamine as well as the terminal H, A, and ALey antigens were shown in only a few cells. In contrast, N-acetyllactosamine substituted by sialic acid and/or fucose residues (Lex, sialosyl-Lex, Ley) were demonstrated in epithelial cells of normal, cycling endometrium, but with both quantitative and qualitative differences in staining relating to the menstrual cycle, indicating that type-2 chain antigens are expressed under both genetic and hormonal influence in human cycling endometrium.  相似文献
