Fish tagged as kelts at a number of Irish stations have been recaptured outside Irish waters along the coasts of Great Britain, Norway and West Greenland. Salmon tagged as smolts in three Irish rivers have been recaptured off the coast of West Greenland and one off the Faroes. Sixteen fish tagged as smolts in Denmark, Great Britain and Sweden were recaptured in Irish rivers or on the coastline of Ireland. Clean salmon tagged in the open sea have travelled to the coasts of Great Britain and a single fish travelled to southern Sweden. Feeding salmon tagged off West Greenland, in the Labrador sea and off the Faroes have been recaptured in Irish waters.  相似文献

Farmed non-native Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is the largest agriculture export product of British Columbia, Canada. Chronic low-volume escapes of salmon from farms into Pacific waters (“leakage”) are typically undetectable (Britton et al. 2011). Analysis of escape-reporting from farmers indicates that reports greatly underestimate the true number of Atlantic salmon inadvertently released from open-net pen rearing sites (Morton and Volpe 2002). To quantify the spatial extent of escaped Atlantic salmon in Canadian Pacific rivers, we systematically snorkel-surveyed 41 known Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.)-supporting rivers and creeks on Vancouver Island over a span of 3 years. We estimated and accounted for imperfect detections using multi-season occupancy models. We detected Atlantic salmon in 36.6 % of surveyed rivers. After accounting for imperfect detection, occupancy models estimated that over half of surveyed streams across the study area contained Atlantic salmon, and that 97 % of streams with high native salmon diversity were occupied by Atlantic salmon. Even in intensive snorkel surveys, Atlantic salmon are detected in occupied streams only 2/3 the time, suggesting abundance and distribution of non-native salmon is greater than indicated by the only existing data. Further, Atlantic salmon are more likely to occupy streams with high native Pacific salmon diversity—and more likely to maintain occupancy across years—potentially increasing competitive pressure on native salmonids. Understanding local biotic and abiotic predictors of Atlantic salmon occupancy, stream colonization, and local extinction requires more data; the same is true for the effects of escaped Atlantic salmon on local salmon diversity and sustainability. These data for the first time show that Atlantic salmon occupy Pacific coastal rivers for multiple years. The impact of Atlantic salmon occupancy in British Columbia rivers must be factored into policy decisions regarding the future of salmon farming in the provincial waters.  相似文献

Young Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar , brown trout, Salmo trutta , and Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus , from eight rivers in North and Mid Norway were examined for Gyrodactylus. The fish were collected from 1975 to 1980. A Gyrodactylus salaris type was observed infecting salmon from six of these rivers. No trout or char were infected. A high frequency and intensity of infection of salmon were observed in all but one of the rivers surveyed. In the Saltdalselva, only one specimen of Gyrodactylus infecting one fish was observed. No subsequent mortality of salmon was observed in this river while there were signs of a high mortality of salmon in the other rivers. The salmon parr were more frequently attacked than the fry, the mortality of salmon seemed to have happened in most of the rivers one year after the first observations of Gyrodactylus were made. The mortality of salmon and the high infection rate of Gyrodactylus in these rivers appears unique, and as far as known to the authors there are no other described cases of mortality due to Gyodactylus in Atlantic salmon in natural waters. The reasons for the outbreak of Gyrodactylus in these rivers are not known. Two theories are discussed: one that the fish were weakened by environmental factors and the other that Gyrodactylus was introduced from some of the infected salmon hatcheries in Scandinavia.  相似文献

Sera from approximately 10 000 Atlantic salmon collected from rivers in the British Isles have been analysed. Polymorphism at the transferrin locus was observed and the distribution of the transferrin alleles provides further evidence supporting the presence of two races of salmon first postulated by Payne et al. (1971 a ).  相似文献

By the 1950s, pollution had extirpated Atlantic salmon in the river Mersey in northwest England. During the 1970s, an extensive restoration program began and in 2001, an adult salmon was caught ascending the river. Subsequently, a fish trap was installed and additional adults are now routinely sampled. In this study, we have genotyped 138 adults and one juvenile salmon at 14 microsatellite loci from across this time period (2001–2011). We have used assignment analysis with a recently compiled pan‐European microsatellite baseline to identify their most probable region of origin. Fish entering the Mersey appear to originate from multiple sources, with the greatest proportion (45–60%, dependent on methodology) assigning to rivers in the geographical region just north of the Mersey, which includes Northwest England and the Solway Firth. Substantial numbers also appear to originate from rivers in western Scotland, and from rivers in Wales and Southwest England; nonetheless, the number of fish originating from proximal rivers to the west of the Mersey was lower than expected. Our results suggest that the majority of salmon sampled in the Mersey are straying in a southerly direction, in accordance with the predominantly clockwise gyre present in the eastern Irish Sea. Our findings highlight the complementary roles of improving water quality and in‐river navigability in restoring salmon to a river and underlines further the potential benefits of restoration over stocking as a long‐term solution to declining fish stocks.  相似文献

The extent of genetic variation in wild Atlantic salmon parr, Sulmo salur L., from river systems in Ireland, Iceland and eastern Canada, was investigated using starch gel electrophoresis. Within Ireland, seven polymorphic enzyme loci ( sAAT-4 *, GPI-1 *, IDDH-1 *, IDDH-2 *, IDHP-3 *, MDH-3 * and mMEP-2 *) were screened in nine different rivers and nine tributaries from the River Blackwater. Significant heterogeneity in gene frequencies occurred between riverine samples and between samples from tributaries of the River Blackwater. Variation between tributaries was as great as between rivers elsewhere in the country. Levels of population differentiation were comparable to those found in other regions throughout the range of the species, and temporal stability in gene frequencies was apparent when the results were compared with previously published data. Screening of riverine samples from Iceland and eastern Canada (Newfoundland and New Brunswick) allowed the Irish results to be considered in a broader context. Irish salmon cluster in the western European group, to which may be added Icelandic populations. Salmon from eastern Canada show a high level of genetic distinctiveness from the European group.  相似文献

The population structure of 'lake‐type' and 'river‐type' sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka , primarily in transboundary rivers in northern British Columbia, was examined with a survey of microsatellite variation. Variation at 14 microsatellite loci was surveyed from c . 3000 lake‐type and 3200 river‐type sockeye salmon from 47 populations in six river drainages in British Columbia. The mean F ST for the 14 microsatellite loci and 47 populations was 0·068, and 0·034 over all river‐type populations. River‐type sockeye salmon were more genetically diverse than lake‐type sockeye salmon, with expected heterozygosity of river‐type sockeye salmon 0·72 and with an average 12·7 alleles observed per locus, whereas expected heterozygosity of lake‐type sockeye salmon was 0·65 with and average 10·5 alleles observed per locus. River drainage of origin was a significant unit of population structure. There was clear evidence of genetic differentiation among river‐type populations of sockeye salmon from different drainages over a broad geographic range in British Columbia.  相似文献

The freshwater phase of the first seaward migration of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is relatively well understood when compared with our understanding of the marine phase of their migration. In 2021, 1008 wild and 60 ranched Atlantic salmon smolts were tagged with acoustic transmitters in 12 rivers in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Large marine receiver arrays were deployed in the Irish Sea at two locations: at the transition of the Irish Sea into the North Atlantic between Ireland and Scotland, and between southern Scotland and Northern Ireland, to examine the early phase of the marine migration of Atlantic salmon smolts. After leaving their natal rivers' post-smolt migration through the Irish Sea was rapid with minimum speeds ranging from 14.03 to 38.56 km.day−1 for Atlantic salmon smolts that entered the Irish Sea directly from their natal river, to 9.69–39.94 km.day−1 for Atlantic salmon smolts that entered the Irish Sea directly from their natal estuary. Population minimum migration success through the study area was strongly correlated with the distance of travel, populations further away from the point of entry to the open North Atlantic exhibited lower migration success. Post-smolts from different populations experienced different water temperatures on entering the North Atlantic. This was largely driven by the timing of their migration and may have significant consequences for feeding and ultimately survivorship. The influence of water currents on post-smolt movement was investigated using data from previously constructed numerical hydrodynamic models. Modeled water current data in the northern Irish Sea showed that post-smolts had a strong preference for migrating when the current direction was at around 283° (west-north-west) but did not migrate when exposed to strong currents in other directions. This is the most favorable direction for onward passage from the Irish Sea to the continental shelf edge current, a known accumulation point for migrating post-smolts. These results strongly indicate that post-smolts migrating through the coastal marine environment are: (1) not simply migrating by current following (2) engage in active directional swimming (3) have an intrinsic sense of their migration direction and (4) can use cues other than water current direction to orientate during this part of their migration.  相似文献

1. The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is an aquatic nuisance species that invaded Ireland around 1994. We studied the invasion of the zebra mussel combining field surveys and genetic studies, to determine the origin of invasion and the vector of introduction. 2. Field surveys showed that live zebra mussels, attached to the hulls of pleasure boats, were transported from Britain to Ireland. These boats were lifted from British waters onto trailers, transported to Ireland by ferry and lifted into Irish waters within a day. Length‐frequency distributions of dead and living mussels on one vessel imported 3 months earlier revealed a traumatic occurrence caused by the overland, air‐exposed transportation. Results show that a large number of individuals survived after re‐immersion in Irish waters and continued to grow. 3. Zebra mussels from populations in Ireland, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France and North America, were analysed using amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP)‐fingerprinting to determine the origin of the Irish invasion. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Irish and British mussels clustered closely together, suggesting an introduction from Britain. 4. Ireland remained un‐invaded by the zebra mussel for more than 150 year. The introduction of the zebra mussel to Ireland occurred following the abolition of value added tax in January 1993 on imported second‐hand boats from the European Union (UK and continental Europe). This, together with a favourable monetary exchange rate at that time, may have increased the risk of invasion of the zebra mussel.  相似文献

We examined regional and latitudinal variation in fecundity and egg weight for five species of Pacific salmon ( Oncorhynchus ) along the Pacific coast of North America. Data were examined for 24 chum salmon, 15 pink salmon, 34 sockeye salmon, 44 chinook salmon, and 40 coho salmon populations from published sources, unpublished Canadian hatchery records, our own laboratory investigations, and other unpublished sources. Substantial regional variation in fecundity and egg weight was observed, with salmon on the Queen Charlotte Islands and Vancouver Island in British Columbia generally having lower fecundity and larger egg size than nearby mainland populations. The relative distance of freshwater migration to the spawning grounds generally had a marked effect on both fecundity and egg size, with populations spawning in the upper portions in the drainages of large rivers like the Fraser River in British Columbia having reduced fecundity and egg size compared with coastal spawning populations. Fecundity was generally higher and egg size generally lower in more northern populations of sockeye, chinook, and coho salmon compared with southern ones. We suggest that egg size tends to be lower in northern populations of some species as a result of increased fecundity due to their older ages at maturity and a limited amount of energy that can be expended on egg production.  相似文献

The results of observations on the distribution of beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas (Pallas, 1776), in three large rivers of western Kamchatka in the summer and autumn seasons are discussed. In the summer, the number of beluga whales in the Khairyuzova, Belogolovaya, and Moroshechnaya rivers reaches 111–250 individuals. Most of the belugas enter the rivers during the flood tidal phase: the number of animals in the estuaries increases along with the rising water level to the maximum value at spring tide. The belugas do not move upstream out of the estuaries and tend to remain in the zone of mixing riverine and marine waters, where 20 species of fish and three species of invertebrates have been identified. At ebb tide, the belugas leave for the sea; however, during a large run of salmon some individuals remain in the estuaries and continue hunting in deep-water areas. The main issue that causes beluga whales to form summer aggregations in Kamchatkan rivers is the hunt for salmon. The distribution of beluga whales in river estuaries is defined by the dynamics and intensity of salmon spawning runs. The preference of beluga whales for these rivers can be explained by the channel type of their estuaries.  相似文献

Juvenile Pacific salmon display a marked surface water orientation during downstream migration, estuarine and nearshore coastal rearing phases. Many estuaries in British Columbia are vertically stratified with a shallow, well-defined halocline which can restrict the dispersion of wastes discharged into less saline surface waters and impose constraints upon aquatic organisms. In situ experiments in an estuary receiving a surface discharge of treated pulp mill wastes, revealed conditions which were lethal to underyearling salmon at, and below the halocline (4.0–6.5 m depth). Behavioural bioassays determined that juvenile chinook salmon were biased towards the water surface and avoided waters at depth. Dissolved oxygen was the variable which affected this distribution most significantly. Surface waters receiving effluent from another pulp mill were lethal to juvenile salmon within 350 m, and a significant vertical avoidance response occurred within 350–950 m of the outfalls. The behavioural response was significantly correlated with in situ temperature, pH and colour (effluent). As a complement to field experiments we developed a 4500 l water column simulator (WCS) to examine salmon behaviour in the laboratory. We investigated the surface water orientation behaviour of juvenile salmon in relation to variations in salinity and dissolved oxygen. Under simulated vertically stratified estuarine conditions, the fish moved freely between overlying fresh water and salt water. Induction of hypoxic conditions in fresh water elicited a downward distribution shift towards the halocline and oxygenated, but more saline, waters. Avoidance reactions (50% level) occurred consistently up to 7–8 mg · l–1 dissolved oxygen. Salmon continued to examine the hypoxic freshwater zone despite sub-optimal conditions.  相似文献

The study aimed to characterise the gametes of salmon (Salmo salar L.) ascending Polish rivers, the first such characterisation since initiation of the salmon restitution programme in the 1980s. Gametes of ascending salmon were examined in two Polish rivers: the Wieprza in the western part of the Polish Baltic coast and the Vistula in the eastern part. Additional gametes were sampled from salmon maintained in pond cultures at fish farms that had provided stocking material for the restitution programme. Spermatocrit, spermatozoa concentration and motility, egg size and weight, as well as egg membrane resistance were analysed. The parameters studied were found to differ both within individual populations and between them. The high variability of the gamete characteristics bodes well for the salmon population in Polish waters, because it evidences high species plasticity and an ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Despite the variabilities observed, the egg and sperm parameters showed values within ranges optimal for salmon reproduction under natural conditions. Sperm quality was found to be largely dependent on environmental conditions affecting the adult males (environmental conditions explained 73.9% of sperm parameter variability), whereas egg quality was mainly related to individual characteristics of the respective female (environmental conditions explained as little as 28.3% of the egg parameter variability).  相似文献

Since the late 20th century, the biomass of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. has increased. Hokkaido, northern Japan, is one of the main areas of chum salmon O. keta production in the North Pacific and intensive hatchery programs support the recent high abundance. However, proper management of naturally spawning populations is necessary to conserve healthy stocks of this species. In 2008, we started a program to assess the naturally spawning chum salmon populations in Hokkaido. Of the total of approximately 1,500 rivers in Hokkaido, 238 rivers with lengths of longer than 8 km (excluding those rivers used for hatchery broodstock collection) were surveyed in 2008 and 2009. The number of non-enhanced rivers found to contain naturally reproducing chum salmon was 59 (31.4% of surveyed rivers) and 50 (37.6% of surveyed rivers) rivers in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Including the rivers where hatchery broodstock were collected and rivers shorter than 8 km that contain naturally spawning chum salmon, chum salmon ascended at least 191 and 175 rivers in Hokkaido in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Repeated foot surveys indicated that the run timings of naturally spawning chum salmon may be affected by coastal commercial fisheries. This study showed that naturally spawning chum salmon remain in many rivers in Hokkaido where hatchery programs have been intensively conducted.  相似文献

This study focuses on the strategy for the conservation of masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou, in the northern part of the species range (via the masu populations in Sakhalin Oblast), based on data of its population structure. It is shown that masu populations that inhabit different rivers genetically differ from each other in allele frequencies at microsatellite markers. In the Naiba River basin, at least two genetically distinct masu populations exist: in the upper reaches and in a tributary, the Bolshoy Takoy River. The masu populations on Iturup Island significantly differ from those on Sakhalin Island; within Sakhalin, the masu salmon from the Chernaya River in the southwestern part of the island is genetically distinct from the southeastern Sakhalin and Aniva Bay populations. The genetic diversity of Iturup populations is substantially lower than that on Sakhalin, probably due to their small sizes. The measures for the conservation and recovery of masu salmon populations should be based primarily on their own genetic resources, or, in the case of a lack of spawners, on the base populations of their ecological/geographical region. In the latter case, masu populations of large rivers can be considered as base ones: for southeastern Sakhalin, this is masu salmon of the Naiba River; for Aniva Bay, this is masu salmon of the Lyutoga River. Transplantation of fish, fertilized eggs, or any other genetic material from a population that is different genetically and inhabits the waters with different ecological gradients should be strongly restricted. The formosan masu salmon from Taiwan Island is studied as an example of a strict genetic isolate.  相似文献

Over the 6 years 1980–85, 212 Norwegian rivers have been examined for occurrence of Gyrodactylus salaris: it was found in 26 rivers and six salmon hatcheries scattered throughout the country from Troms county in the north to Sogn og Fjordane in western Norway. The distribution of G. salaris is connected with the stocking of fish from infected salmon hatcheries. The populations of salmon parr have been drastically reduced in the infected rivers. In later years catches of ascending salmon in these rivers have also sharply declined: in 1984 salmon fishery losses were estimated at 250–500 t.
Gyrodactylus salaris is most probably a recent introduction to Norwegian rivers. A primary aim is to exterminate this parasite from all infected rivers and hatcheries: so far this has been accomplished in one river and one hatchery.  相似文献

Serum thyroid hormone levels were determined in adult Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) of both sexes caught in the ocean and at a sequence of locations on their return migration to spawn. Tri-iodothyronine (T3) levels were greatest in fish caught in coastal or estuarine waters or in a river near head-of-tide. T3 levels were lower in fish caught in rivers throughout the angling season and lowest in those captured entering a tributary near spawning. Thyroxine (T4) levels were lowest in immature fish captured in the ocean in winter but raised in fish captured in spring; many of the latter group showed endocrine evidence of their becoming sexually mature. T4 levels were greatest in fish captured in coastal waters and progressively lower in fish captured in an estuary, near head-of-tide and in rivers. T4 levels in fish captured at tributary entry near spawning exceeded those in fish caught in rivers earlier in the year. In general, these data support the hypothesis that motor activity level in migrant fish is a determinant of thyroid status.  相似文献

The efficiency of reproduction of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus) in the rivers of the northeastern Sakhalin coast is characterized based on long-term observations. The rivers of the northern, central, and southern parts differ in the type of their channel, faunistic composition of aquatic biota, and prevalent salmon species. The northern rivers have a plain type of channel with rather low spawning efficiency of salmons and relatively poor freshwater ichthyofauna. The central area houses the largest rivers (Tym’ and Nabil’ Rivers) running to the Nyiskii and Nabil’skii Gulfs; the rivers there have developed channels of a plain type, high diversity of resident ichthyofauna, low spawning efficiency of the pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, and high (in the past) abundance of the fall chum salmon O. keta. Characteristic of the southern rivers with their prevalently mountain–foothill type of channels are poor fish population and high spawning efficiency of the pink salmon. The population dynamics of the salmonids in the northeastern coast of Sakhalin is described. The total number of breeders entering the rivers of the northeastern coast that provides an efficient reproduction is estimated as 3.5?9.0 million individuals for the pink salmon and 0.04–0.60 million individuals for the chum salmon (fall race).  相似文献
