The washout of inert gas from tissues typically follows multiexponential curves rather than monoexponential curves as would be expected from homogeneous, well-mixed compartment. This implies that the ratio for the square root of the variance of the distribution of transit times to the mean (relative dispersion) must be greater than 1. Among the possible explanations offered for multiexponential curves are heterogeneous capillary flow, uneven capillary spacing, and countercurrent exchange in small veins and arteries. By means of computer simulations of the random walk of gas molecules across capillary beds with parameters of skeletal muscle, we find that heterogeneity involving adjacent capillaries does not suffice to give a relative dispersion greater than one. Neither heterogeneous flow, nor variations in spacing, nor countercurrent exchange between capillaries can account for the multiexponential character of experimental tissue washout curves or the large relative dispersions that have been measured. Simple diffusion calculations are used to show that many gas molecules can wander up to several millimeters away from their entry point during an average transit through a tissue bed. Analytical calculations indicate that an inert gas molecule in an arterial vessel will usually make its first vascular exit from a vessel larger than 20 micron and will wander in and out of tissue and microvessels many times before finally returning to the central circulation. The final exit from tissue will nearly always be into a vessel larger than 20 micron. We propose the hypothesis that the multiexponential character of skeletal muscle tissue inert gas washout curves must be almost entirely due to heterogeneity between tissue regions separated by 3 mm or more, or to countercurrent exchanges in vessels larger than 20 micron diam.  相似文献

The organization of the peripheral vascular apparatus in two haplotaxids has been studied and compared with that of other microdriles. Considerable differences in the circulatory systems of Pelodrilus leruthi and Haplotaxis gordioides, especially in relationships to the body wall muscle fibers, separate and distinguish the two animals. Different organizations of the peripheral apparatus that can be observed in these microdriles are: in the first species, capillary vessels have no contact with the body wall; in the second species, capillaries extend between the longitudinal muscle fibers until they reach the body surface, thus approaching the situation in megadriles where circulation can become intraepithelial.Generally, vessels hanging in the coelom are of a large diameter. When a capillary network related to the body wall muscle develops, vessels are small in diameter and their walls have variable numbers of contractile elements, ensuring the forced circulation of the blood.  相似文献

This study demonstrates gross arterial supply, venous drainage and microvascular patterns of larval and adult thyroid glands in the African Clawed Frog, Xenopus laevis by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts and light microscopy of stained serial tissue sections. Results confirm published findings gained by microscopical dissections with respect to gross arterial supply. However, in adult frogs one rather than two thyroid veins are found. This study reveals for the first time that bilaterally located thyroid glands in premetamorphosis have immature capillary networks, lack a clear hierarchy of blood vessels, and show many signs of sprouting angiogenesis. During metamorphic climax, blood vessels gain a clear hierarchy and capillaries form closed networks around thyroid follicles. From climax onwards, non‐sprouting angiogenesis (intussusceptive microvascular growth) becomes the prevailing mode of angiogenesis intensifying follicle capillarization. Due to narrow interfollicular spaces, thyroidal arterioles remain superficial while draining venules are located interfollicularly. In contrast with the mammalian thyroid gland where most thyroid follicles have their own capillary beds, most thyroid follicles in Xenopus share their capillary beds with neighbouring follicles. Consequently, the concept of individual morphological and functional angiofollicular units applicable to adult mammalian and human thyroid glands is not applicable to larval and adult amphibian thyroid glands.  相似文献

The electron microscopic investigation has revealed in the body of the leech two types of vessels, that together with common signs possess a number of peculiarities in composition of endothelial cells. These vessels have different level of organization: the vessels of the first type, concerning the parenchyma of the leech, are nutritive, and the vessels of the second type combine capacitance and transport functions and are the place of hemolymph renovation at the expense of an active metabolic and synthetic activity of the endothelial cells. A fact is stated concerning a specific position of mitochondria in the endotheliocytes of the second type vessels: from the vessel's lumen they are not covered with plasmolemma along their whole extent and come into an immediate contact with hemolymph. Therefore, a hypothesis is suggested on functional activity of the endothelial cell mitochondria in the second type vessels. Presumptive differentiation of the two major vessels of the leech body makes it possible to suppose that there exist functional predecessors of the vessels of branchial and pulmonary type, that is vessels of lesser and greater circulation.  相似文献

Patterns of blood flow were examined in the surface vessels of the surgically exposed brain by intracarotid injection of 1% fluorescein and rapid serial photographs timed by a photo-cell signal. Matching colour filters were used for black and white or Ektachrome film.As developed in cats and monkeys, and applied in five patients during craniotomy, the technique gave a picture of flow patterns in the pial and cortical vascular bed, demonstrating “water-shed” areas bordering major arterial territories, laminar flow in veins, and, in particular, the details of filling and clearing in the fine pial vessels, the superficial cortical capillary bed and in the vascular beds of tumours.Since these features are rendered in finer detail and sharper contrast than by standard x-ray angiography, the method affords a new means of more adequately examining the epicerebral circulation in man during craniotomy for a variety of lesions.  相似文献

Summary The angioarchitecture of the hypophysial portal system of the White-crowned Sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii, was investigated by electron microscopy in conjunction with light microscopy of serial thick sections. The small arteries or arterioles supplying the primary capillary plexus of the median eminence have the typical form of arterioles. The vessels of the primary capillary plexus, on the surface of the median eminence, with their many fenestrations and pinocytotic vesicles, are typical of the form of capillary usually found in other endocrine organs. The portal vessels in the pars tuberalis have wide perivascular spaces between the basement membrane of the endothelium and that of parenchymal lobules of the pars tuberalis. These perivascular spaces are occupied usually by the perivascular cells, but sometimes contain erythrocytes. The endothelial cells of the portal vessels often protrude into vascular lumen giving the appearance of valve-like structures. These may have a role in the regulation of blood flow. The endothelial cells of the portal vessels are invested by a definitive basement membrane and by the cytoplasm of pericytes which are oriented spirally to the longitudinal axes of the vessels. The pericytes may have a function in the mechanical support of the vascular wall and a contractile function that might regulate the flow rate of blood. The investigation reported herein was supported by a scientific research grant (No. 291049) from the Ministry of Education of Japan to Prof. Mikami; by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft to Prof. Oksche; by a grant (5 ROI-NB 06817) from the National Institutes of Health to Prof. Farner, and by a research grant (5 ROI-HE 07240 NEUA) from the National Institutes of Health to Prof. Vitums.  相似文献

Although several molecular players have been described that play a role during the early phases of lung development, it is still unknown how the vasculature develops in relation to the airways. Two opposing models describe development of lung vasculature: one suggests that both vasculogenesis and angiogenesis are involved, whereas the second describes vasculogenesis as the primary mechanism. Therefore, we examined the development of the murine pulmonary vasculature through a morphological analysis from the onset of lung development [9.5 days postcoital (dpc)] until the pseudoglandular stage (13.5 dpc). We analyzed fetal lungs of Tie2-LacZ transgenic mice as well as serial sections of wild-type lungs stained with endothelial-specific antibodies (Flk-1, Fli-1, and PECAM-1). Embryos were processed with intact blood circulation to maintain the integrity of the vasculature; hence individual vessels could be identified with accuracy through serial section analysis. Furthermore, circulating primitive erythrocytes, formed exclusively by the blood islands in the yolk sac, are trapped in vessels during fixation, which proves the connection with the embryonic circulation. We report that from the first morphological sign of lung development, a clear vascular network exists that is in contact with the embryonic circulation. We propose distal angiogenesis as a new concept for early pulmonary vascular morphogenesis. In this model, capillary networks surround the terminal buds and expand by formation of new capillaries from preexisting vessels as the lung bud grows. The fact that at an early embryonic stage a complete vascular network exists may be important for the general understanding of embryonic development.  相似文献

The permeability properties of fenestrated capillaries in the colon and exocrine and endocrine pancreas to exogenous and endogenous molecules were examined. The exogenous tracers horseradish peroxidase (Einstein-Stokes radius [ESR], 3.0 nm), hemoglobin (ESR, 3.2 nm), and ferritin (ESR, 6.1 nm) were injected intravenously and allowed to circulate for 5-90 min. Tissues were removed and processed for cytochemical or standard electron microscopic examination. The endogenous plasma proteins albumin (ESR, 3.5 nm) and IgG (ESR, 5.5 nm) were localized by immunocytochemistry using the protein A-gold technique. All vessels examined were permeable to HRP in less than 5 min. In contrast, these vessels were restrictive to the slightly larger hemoglobin molecule (60-min circulation) and to ferritin (90-min circulation). Capillaries in the exocrine and endocrine pancreas were restrictive to albumin and IgG. These results demonstrate the presence of fenestrated capillary beds, in addition to the choriocapillaris, that are restrictive to molecules with ESR greater than or equal to 3.2 nm. Capillaries in the mucosa of the colon were restrictive to hemoglobin and ferritin but did not restrict albumin or IgG. This indicates that these vessels are of the permeable type. However, the rate of transendothelial movement of molecules is slower than that of other permeable vessels, such as in the ileo-jejunum. This study has provided further evidence for the existence of fenestrated endothelia that are restrictive to exogenous and/or endogenous molecules.  相似文献

The new three-layer microvascular mathematical model for surface tissue heat transfer developed in, which is based on detailed vascular casts and tissue temperature measurements in the rabbit thigh, is used to investigate the thermal characteristics of surface tissue under a wide variety of physiological conditions. Studies are carried out to examine the effects of vascular configuration, arterial blood supply rate, distribution of capillary perfusion, cutaneous blood circulation and metabolic heat production on the average tissue temperature profile, the local arterial-venous blood temperature difference in the thermally significant countercurrent vessels, and surface heat flux.  相似文献

The vascularization of the brain and the pituitary region of the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri is described from serial section reconstruction. The distal lobe has no direct arterial blood supply and receives blood solely from a pituitary portal system basically similar to that of other sarcopterygians. The primary capillary plexus of the median eminence receives its arterial blood from the infundibular arteries, which on their way distribute some small branches to the prechiasmatic region. The primary plexus also receives capillaries from the adjacent pial hypothalamic plexus. The primary capillary plexus of the median eminence comprises a rostral 'uncovered' and caudal 'covered' part which are not sharply delineated. Distinct portal vessels connect the 'uncovered' rostral part of the primary plexus with the secondary capillary plexus supplying the rostral subdivision of the pars distalis. The 'covered' caudal part of the primary plexus merges into the proximal subdivision of the pars distalis, apparently without formation of distinct portal vessels. The primary plexus has some connections with the plexus intermedius via a hypophysial stem capillary plexus. The plexus intermedius has a substantial arterial supply and gives off capillaries to the parenchyma of the pars intermedia. The adenohypophysis is drained into an unpaired hypophysial vein. The significance of the vascular pathways is discussed from comparative, functional, and evolutionary viewpoints.  相似文献

The blood circulation of the Stannius corpuscles, like that of the kidneys to which the corpuscles are attached, represents a portal system. The corpuscles receive blood from the dorsal caudal vein and from a vein coming from the hypaxial musculature. They are drained by veins which enter the caudal parts of the kidneys and therefore endocrine substances released by the corpuscles pass through the kidneys before they enter the general body circulation. The corpuscles are penetrated by sympathetic nerves coming from a small subvertebral ganglion. It is likely that these nerves innervate the muscular coat around the blood vessels. The muscular coat surrounding the renal blood vessels, the collecting tubules and part of the ureters, is innervated by nerves from the same ganglion. The secretory activity of the gland cells appears to be controlled by blood borne factors, because neither synaptic contacts with these cells, nor gap junctions among the cells, have been found in thin sections and freeze-etch replicas of the corpuscles. The corpuscles contain two cell types, both presumed to have endocrine function. Histochemical and ultrastructural data indicate that the gland cells produce glycoproteins. It is likely that the contents of the secretory granules are released by exocytosis. One cell type is structurally similar to the cells described in many other teleosts and thought to be engaged in the synthesis of a hypocalcemic hormone. The ultrastructure of the second cell type resembles cells described only in other migratory species: salmonids and eels. It may be involved in the control of monovalent ions.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Bellman, Jacquez, and Kalaba,Bull. Math. Biophysics,22: 181–198, 1960) a model of the processes occurring in the exchange of a drug between capillary plasma, extracellular space and intracellular space was developed. This included the possibility of a reaction between the drug and a component of the intracellular space. The equations developed thus describe the events within a capillary bed. In the present paper, a simplified model of the body is set up. Each organ is treated as a single capillary bed and is linked to other organs via the circulation, in the parallel and/or series arrangements found in the body. Mixing in the circulation is included at the simplest possible level. The concentration of drug entering any one capillary bed is determined by the concentrations leaving all other capillary beds, the time lags, and mixing involved in the circulation. The equations describing these processes in conjunction with the equations of the processes occurring within each capillary bed lead to a large set of differential-difference equations.  相似文献

The hypophyseal portal vessels were studied in forty nine species of birds. The primary capillary plexus in the median eminence is single or divided into an anterior and a posterior plexus. Irrespective of whether the primary capillary plexus is single or divided, distinct, non-interconnected anterior and posterior groups of portal vessels are present in all the species investigated. The anterior group of portal vessels originates in the anterior region of the median eminence and breaks up into capillaries in the cephalic lobe of the pars distalis; the posterior group of portal vessels originates in the posterior region of the median eminence and breaks up into capillaries in the caudal lobe of the pars distalis. This type of regional distribution of portal vessels appears to be of general occurrence in the avian pituitary. The median eminence in the species investigated shows an AF-positive anterior region and an AF-negative posterior region. The pars distalis is differentiated into histologically distinct cephalic and caudal lobes. The arrangement of the portal vessels into anterior and posterior groups provides morphological basis for the view that the functions of the cephalic lobe may be controlled by the anterior median eminence, whereas those of the caudal lobe may be controlled by the posterior median eminence. However, experimental data available to date do not suggest a physiological significance to the widespread incidence of the regional distribution of portal vessels in the avian pituitary.  相似文献

The renal vasculature of the toad, Bufo marinus, was studied mainly by means of scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. All arterial branches terminated in a glomerulus. Each glomerulus was supplied by only one afferent arteriole. No shunts between afferent and efferent arterioles were observed. The glomerular channels appeared to be permanent capillaries. No evidence supporting the theory of freely shifting glomerular blood channels was found. Efferent arterioles radiated out towards the dorsal surface of the kidney where they connected with peritubular vessels. The renal portal veins produced an anastomosing plexus on the dorsal surface of the kidney, giving rise to the peritubular vessels. Peritubular vessels ran radially toward the ventral surface of the kidney, where they formed the roots of the renal veins. Attention is drawn to the possibility of hairpin countercurrent exchange between the capillary-like efferent arterioles and the peritubular vessels in the dorsal kidney.  相似文献

We applied scanning electron microscopy combined with imaging and morphometric techniques to analyze the dorsal topography and morphology of short portal vessels linking the capillary beds of the pituitary neural and anterior lobes in adult male albino rats. The pituitary microvasculature was replicated by intracarotid injection of Batson's No. 17 compound producing plastic casts that were advantageous for comprehensive morphometric analyses using an imaging device. The analysis revealed the existence of two types of portal vessels having quantitatively different morphological properties. The bilateral venular plexus of 3–4 vessels located at the base of the infundibular stalk (each venule measuring 300 m in length and 32 m in diameter) appears to be the major part of the short portal system in the dorsum of the rat pituitary gland. Narrower capillary-like shunt vessels (6.8 m in diameter), of about the same length as the venules, were situated throughout other subregions of the intermediate lobe cleft. The short portal vessels of both types made direct anastomoses with the capillary networks in the neural and anterior lobes. The neural lobe capillaries were twice as numerous (1324 per mm2), and only half as wide (6.2 m), as the sinusoidal capillaries in the anterior lobe (density of 637 per mm2; diameter of 13.7 m). The topographical position of the portal venular system suggests that the caudolateral subregions of the pituitary neural and anterior lobes have a functional relationship dependent on rapid interlobe transfer of neurohumoral factors such as hormones via the portal blood. This process appears to be supplemented throughout the rest of the cleft between the two lobes by a small number of capillary shunts that supply the epithelial cell lobules of the intermediate lobe in situ. The findings collectively indicate that this portal system provides a constant stream of neurohumoral information that is shared moment-by-moment between the pituitary neural and anterior lobes.  相似文献

Morphometry of cat's pulmonary arterial tree   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Morphometic data of the pulmonary artery in the cat's right lung are presented. Silicone elastomer casts of cat's right lung were made, and measured, counted and analyzed. The Strahler system is used to describe the branching pattern of the arterial vascular tree. These data are needed for any quantitative approach to the study of the pulmonary circulation. For all the pulmonary blood vessels of the cat lying between the main pulmonary artery and the capillary beds, there are a total of 10 orders of vessels in the right upper lobe, 9 orders of vessels in the right middle lobe and 11 orders of vessels in the right lower lobe. The ratio of the number of branches in successive orders of vessels or the branching ratio, is 3.58. The corresponding average diameter ratio is 1.72, whereas the average length ratio is 1.81.  相似文献

Many ischaemic stroke patients who have a mechanical removal of their clot (thrombectomy) do not get reperfusion of tissue despite the thrombus being removed. One hypothesis for this ‘no-reperfusion’ phenomenon is micro-emboli fragmenting off the large clot during thrombectomy and occluding smaller blood vessels downstream of the clot location. This is impossible to observe in-vivo and so we here develop an in-silico model based on in-vitro experiments to model the effect of micro-emboli on brain tissue. Through in-vitro experiments we obtain, under a variety of clot consistencies and thrombectomy techniques, micro-emboli distributions post-thrombectomy. Blood flow through the microcirculation is modelled for statistically accurate voxels of brain microvasculature including penetrating arterioles and capillary beds. A novel micro-emboli algorithm, informed by the experimental data, is used to simulate the impact of micro-emboli successively entering the penetrating arterioles and the capillary bed. Scaled-up blood flow parameters–permeability and coupling coefficients–are calculated under various conditions. We find that capillary beds are more susceptible to occlusions than the penetrating arterioles with a 4x greater drop in permeability per volume of vessel occluded. Individual microvascular geometries determine robustness to micro-emboli. Hard clot fragmentation leads to larger micro-emboli and larger drops in blood flow for a given number of micro-emboli. Thrombectomy technique has a large impact on clot fragmentation and hence occlusions in the microvasculature. As such, in-silico modelling of mechanical thrombectomy predicts that clot specific factors, interventional technique, and microvascular geometry strongly influence reperfusion of the brain. Micro-emboli are likely contributory to the phenomenon of no-reperfusion following successful removal of a major clot.  相似文献

The fine structure of intraganglionic blood vessels of rat superior cervical sympathetic ganglia is studied with the light microscope and with both conventional and ultrastructural histochemical methods. Two sets of small capillaries together with larger sinusoidal ones are identified. One set of capillaries is associated with the clustered (type II) small catecholamine-containing (CC) cells and exhibits features suggestive of fluid transport function (multiple wide fenestrae and active pinocytosis). The second set of capillaries is in direct relation to the sympathetic neurons (SN) and shows characteristics suggestive of absorptive function (microvilli and pinocytotic vesicles). The larger sinusoidal capillaries are observed in the vicinity of type II CC cells, extend parallel to the long axes of the perikarya of the neurons and occasionally form loops around them. The latter are assumed to be larger blood spaces connecting the two capillary sets and serve to slow the circulation around the neurons. A pattern of portal-like intraganglionic microcirculation through which type II CC cells participate in modulating the SN is postulated. Type II CC cells secrete a catecholamine modulator which, driven by concentration gradient, gains access to the circulation through the fenestrated capillaries. The sinusoidal capillaries serve to perfuse the SN with a slow stream of blood rich in the catecholamine modulator. The latter can be filtered through the microvilli and pinocytotic vesicles of the second set of capillaries to induce slow inhibitory postsynaptic potential on the SN.  相似文献

We develop analytical expressions (scaling laws) for the local temperature fluctuations near isolated and countercurrent blood vessels during hyperthermia. These scaling laws relate the magnitude of such fluctuations to the size of the heated region and to the thermal equilibration length of the vessels. A new equilibration length is identified for countercurrent vessels. Significant temperature differences are predicted between the vessels and the immediately adjacent tissue when the equilibration length is comparable to or longer than the size of the heated tissue region. Countercurrent vessels are shown to have shorter equilibration lengths and produce smaller temperature fluctuations than isolated vessels of the same size.  相似文献

Microcorrosion casts of blood vessels in the skin of the spotted salamander, Salamandra salamandra L., were studied using scanning eletron microscopy. The investigated vessels include a subepidermal network of respiratory capillaries and the vessels of poison glands. A hypothesis is proposed, according to which both types of vascular beds possess a common origin. Probable factors involved in the differentiation of the primary netword of the subepidermal vessels in larvae are indicated and speculation concerning the supposed mosaic type of circulation in the capillaries of the subepidermal respiratory bed is presented.  相似文献
