Yearly population fluctuations of M. pustulae were investigated at 19 sites in Kyushu. In sites where a platygastrid is the only parasitoid of the midge, the percentage parasitism was very low in the incipient stage of the outbreak of the midge populations. After the number of midges reached a peak, the midge populations declined as the percentage parasitism increased, and then the outbreak ceased. On the other hand, in several populations no outbreak was found and the percentage parasitism was constantly at a high level. Therefore, the immediate cause for the outbreak seemed to be a decline of the percentage parasitism. Like the midge, the platygastrid has one generation each year, and its females also emerge in spring to deposit their eggs within host eggs. The decline of the percentage parasitism seemed to be mainly affected by the time lag between emergence periods of M. pustulae and the platygastrid. In the midge populations parasitized by both the platygastrid and a eulophid (Chrysonotomyia sp.), an extinction of the population was observed, resulting from parasitism by the latter, Chrysonotomyia sp. is polyphagous and multivoltine, and is a late parasitoid, as discussed byAskew (1975). When the density of the midges is very low, the platygastrid may leave the host eggs unparasitized, while Chrysonotomyia sp. may not, because the mature galls are conspicuous.

In situ preservation of fossil insect damage in plant fossils is an excellent tool to study the coevolution of flora and fauna through geological time, but finding both damage and the insect causing that damage in the same specimen is a very rare phenomenon. Galling is a common form of angiosperm leaf damage, which can be regarded as a kind of extended phenotype of the causal insects, essentially the gall midges, but galls usually lack remains of the insects themselves. Here we report the in situ occurrence of a gall midge (Insecta, Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) as well as its pupal exuviae on the abaxial cuticular surface of fossilized leaf cuticle fragments of Fabaceae leaves (cf. Albizia) that also bear galls, recovered from the latest Neogene (Rajdanda Formation, Pliocene) sediments of the Chotonagpur Plateau, Jharkhand, northeastern India. This Pliocene gall midge features well-preserved legs, segmented antenna with distinct and enlarged scape, elongate curved setae, and longer than broad terminal plate of the ovipositor lamellae. The in situ presence of a gall midge on a host fabaceous leaf cuticle indicates the existence of a host-ectoparasite relationship in the ancient warm and humid tropical monsoon-influenced forests of eastern India during the Pliocene. This is the first authentic fossil record of an in situ phytophagous insect of Cecidomyiidae from India, as well as southeast Asia. Although the identification of the recovered phytophagous insect associated with the fossil leaf cuticle is only possible to family level, this find reveals that such plant-insect relationships existed in the Pliocene of eastern India.  相似文献

Abstract:  We determined the influence of temperature on post-diapause development of overwintered Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye (Dipt., Cecidomyiidae) under various treatments (12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30°C) in an effort to predict its spring emergence. Survival and developmental period for the overwintered larvae and pupae were significantly influenced by temperature. Linear and nonlinear regression models quantitatively described temperature-dependent development and survival of T. japonensis . The survival models exhibited right-skewed bell shape patterns for all stages, indicating a more detrimental impact on survival at high temperatures. Theoretical optimum temperatures with highest survival were 22.3, 24.0 and 24.0°C for the overwintered larvae, pupae and total post-diapause development (the larvae to adults) respectively. Pupal mortality was higher at all temperatures than larval mortality and the suitable range of temperature for pupae was narrower than that of larvae. The nonlinear Briere model estimated that optimum temperatures with the fastest development were 29.1°C for larvae, 27.6°C for pupae and 27.0°C for larvae to adults. In a linear model, the lower threshold temperatures were 5.1, 7.1 and 5.9°C for larvae, pupae, and larvae to adults respectively. A predictive degree-day model was developed using trap catches of T. japonensis adult emergence during 1991–1995. The model accounted for 84.6% of year-to-year variation in adult emergence and predicted accurately the median emergence time in 1996.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The causes and incidence of mortality in populations of the yew gall midge Taxomyia taxi at Kingley Vale, West Sussex, are described in relation to the various life cycles of the midge.
2. Life table analysis of populations studied for 10 years indicates that the key factor in mortality is failure to achieve maximum fecundity, although in 1-year life cycles parasitism by Mesopolobus diffinis is equally important. Densities and mortality vary considerably between different life cycles, and no regulation has been firmly established.
3. Interactions between the host populations and their parasites are complex and as yet not fully analysable, but the pattern of parasitism seen may explain some of the complex life history pattern of the host. The existence of long-term cycles of host and parasite densities are predicted.  相似文献

Ten microsatellites were isolated from the barley stem gall midge, Mayetiola hordei. Polymorphism at each locus was tested on 40 individual midges, among which 34 were collected on barley and six on wheat crops in Tunisia. Six loci were polymorphic with the number of alleles ranging from two to seven. The observed heterozygosity varied between 0.025 and 0.2. These microsatellite loci revealed a strong effect of host plant on the population genetic structure of M. hordei.  相似文献

Two dominant parasitoids, Platygaster matsutama Yoshida and Inostemma seoulis Ko, often coexist in the host-parasitoid community of the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye. Subtle differences in parasitoid phenology appear to play a key role in reducing interspecific competition, but the specific thermal conditions for development of each species have not been defined. We examined the thermal biology of two sympatric parasitoids during postdiapause development at seven constant temperatures (12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30 °C) to determine species-specific developmental parameters. The lower developmental threshold was estimated to be 4.2 °C and 8.4 °C, and the thermal constant was 741.2 and 946.1 degree days (DD) for P. matsutama and I. seoulis, respectively, using the linear model. The nonlinear model determined that the optimal temperature was 24.8 and 26.5 °C for P. matsutama and I. seoulis, respectively, but with an upper threshold temperature (30 °C) that was the same for both species. The development rate of P. matsutama was higher than that of I. seoulis over the entire thermal range, and the difference was highest at 21.5 °C. Despite the lower developmental rate, I. seoulis was more heat tolerant and its optimal temperature was closer to that of host insect than those of P. matsutama. The results showed clear differences in thermal biology between P. matsutama and I. seoulis. Potential implications are discussed with respect to coexistence of two parasitoids on a single host and biological control of T. japonensis.  相似文献

Most gall insects use young developing plant organs for gall formation; however, little information is available on the histological identification of such tissues or the changes in their availability with plant growth. We investigated the oviposition site of and the tissue used for gall formation by the midge Asphondylia aucubae Yukawa and Ohsaki, which is responsible for galls on the fruit of Aucuba japonica Thunb., by comparing the internal structures of young developing fruit, mature intact (uninfested) fruit, and galled fruit. The midge deposited eggs between the integument and the carpel of young fruit. Larval chambers were made of callus‐like tissue and were formed between the embryo sac and the carpel, where the integument was initially situated. The integument and part of the carpel were thus identified as critical plant tissues used by A. aucubae in forming galls. The integument degenerates in mature intact fruit; therefore, the season of emergence and oviposition by the midge may be determined by the timing of integument degeneration.  相似文献

Galls on Bauhinia cupulata (Fabaceae) were investigated in two physiognomies of the Cerrado, riparian and dry forest, in the municipality of Barreiras (Western Bahia, Brazil) from October 2012 to July 2014. Four insect gall morphotypes were found. They were characterized based on shape, color, indumentum, plant organ of occurrence and galling taxon. A new galling species, Schizomyia barreirensis, is described, illustrated (larva, pupa, male, female and gall) and compared to other Neotropical congeneric species.  相似文献

Summary Variability within and between shoots of the grass Phragmites australis proved to be important for both survival (successful gall induction) and reproduction (larval weight) of the gall-inducing midge Giraudiella inclusa. The ovipositing females and the migrating first instar larvae chose a predictable microhabitat within shoots and within internodes characterized by a high nutritional quality (nitrogen, mineral content, sugar, water) and reduced palnt defense properties (silicate). Clutch size increased with the shoot diameter, larval scramble competition could not be detected. Female shoot selection was random, although the chances of successful gall induction greatly differed between shoots. Thick and intact shoots (6 mm) led to a high larval mortality. But thick shoots destroyed apically by stem-mining caterpillars (of the noctuid moth Archanara geminipuncta) had on average large gall clusters. Accordingly, the adjustment of the clutch size to the shoot diameter resulted in an advantage for the gall midge females only when shoots were thin and short (i.e. stressed by water and nutrient deficiency) or heavily damage (i.e. stressed) by caterpillars. Thus, the monophagous gall maker G. inclusa did not compensate for all features of intershoot variation of P. australis, although grasses are well-known for their simple plant architecture and their low diversity and low concentration of secondary compounds.  相似文献

Invasion by the Australian paperbark, Melaleuca quinquenervia, has degraded large areas of south Florida wetlands. Restoration of these wetlands requires the removal of expansive monocultures of this large tree while simultaneously curtailing its spread. Management strategies developed by federal and state agencies include biological control to halt the spread of this species and to prevent reinfestation of cleared areas. This requires biological agents able to reduce flowering, seed production, and growth while increasing mortality of seedlings and saplings. Two of the three introduced agents (Oxyops vitiosa Pascoe and Boreioglycaspis melaleucae Moore) partially meet these needs but outcomes are not spatially or temporally consistent. Thus, additional agents are needed. The bud-gall fly Fergusonina turneri Taylor, with its mutualistic nematode Fergusobia quinquenerviae Davies and Giblin-Davis, is actively being released but has not established. A fourth promising agent, the gall midge Lophodiplosis trifida Gagné, manifested an extremely narrow host range during laboratory testing. Oviposition was indiscriminant in caged environments. Small, incipient, unilocular galls were initiated on Melaleuca viminalis, but larval development ensued only on M. quinquenervia. The unilocular galls on M. viminalis did not grow and produced no adult flies. As a result, M. viminalis test plants suffered only minor cosmetic damage. Observations from both Australia and Florida attest to the ability of this midge to impede M. quinquenervia growth and kill small plants. Thus, L. trifida is safe to release and will likely contribute to management objectives for control of this pernicious wetland invader.  相似文献

Platygaster diplosisae and Aprostocetus procerae attack both the African rice gall midge (AfRGM), Orseolia oryzivora, and Orseolia bonzii, a closely related gall midge that feeds on Paspalum scrobiculatum. Recent research has shown that managing this weed at the edge of rice fields offers African farmers, low-cost non-chemical control of AfRGM.  相似文献

Synchronization between the appearance of herbivorous insects and their host-plant phenology is a critical event, especially for short-lived insects such as gall midges. We studied a natural population of Pseudasphondylia neolitseae (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) that induces leaf galls on Neolitsea sericea (Lauraceae) to evaluate the effect of synchronization on gall density in the subsequent generation. To do so, we combined quantitative data on host resources with time lag between emergence and host-available seasons. The gamma distribution model was applied to the emergence curve of P. neolitseae and the normal distribution model to the daily changes in the number of host buds suitable for oviposition; the latter model was transformed into an available-resource curve based on the mean number of host buds required for a single female to realize her eggs. By superimposing the emergence curve on the available-resource curve and calculating overlapped area, the degree of synchronization was evaluated more accurately than previous studies, which had treated only the time lag. The number of females that synchronized with host buds affected gall density in the next generation.  相似文献
