In darkness, sporalation of Penicillium claviforme Bainier CBS strain 126–23 was uniform. A single 10 J m−2 blue light pulse (in the range 360 to 520 nm) was sufficient to elicit an endogenous zonation rhythm (coremia formation); the higher the fluence, the longer the rhythm expression. The period was 30 to 36 h as long as sufficient fluence rate (3 μW m−2 for broad band blue light and 18.1 nmol m−2 s−1 for wavelengths 433, 457 or 465 nm) was continuously maintained; this rhythm became desynchronized in about a week. The period increased rapidly and reached 72 to 120 h as soon as the fluence rate was too low or dark was established. The 445,479 and 495 nm radiations evoked the rhythm in pulse experiments, whereas the rhythm was immediately desynchronized in continuous light. The participation of two photosensitive reactions in the rhythm regulation of P. claviforme is postulated.  相似文献

Some relevant traits of a wild (L) and a laboratory (C) strain of Hylemya antiqua (Meigen ), determining differences in their pupation ability under experimental conditions have been investigated in relation to genetic control. The wild strain showed an intrinsic higher pupation ability than the laboratory strain. The minimum feeding period was 0.6 days longer for the C strain. The minimum larval dry weight was different for the two strains. With a normal feeding period C larvae pupated on average 1.63 days later than L larvae. By the shortening of the larval feeding period an acceleration of the larval development of both strains was observed: the acceleration of development was more marked for the wild strain. This result has been contrasted with published works on Drosphila. The consequences of these differences as far as the competitive ability of each strain is concerned, have been discussed in relation to genetic control.  相似文献

Several problems were discussed in relation toMacDonald' s method (MacDonald , 1957) for estimating the survival rate of a natural population of adults with varying survival rates and unstable age structure.
  1. Random samplings with a fixed sampling ratio and an appropriate census interval is pre-requisite during the occurrence of the adults.
  2. At each sampling, female adults are dissected to know the ratio, pi, of nulliparous females in ith sample (i=0, 1, 2, 3, …,). The Σnipi/Σni gives an estimate of the ratio, Fα/F, of nulliparous females in the population where ni refers to the population size on ith census date. If a constant daily survival rate is assumed, the daily survival rate is estimated from equation (4′). When the survival rate is not constant over the period of adult occurrence, e. g. before and after the initiation of oviposition, the survival rate during pre-ovipositional period is estimated by equation (4″).
  3. Decision of an economic census interval to obtain a reliable estimate of the ratio, Fα/F, is depending on the form of emergence curve, particularly on its duration and the length of pre-ovipositional period. If the normal distribution can be assumed for the emergence curve, an interval less than one third of the emergence period is recommended. Concerning with insects having a long pre-ovipositional period, a census interval which exceeds one third of the emergence period still gives a good estimate of Fα/F.
  4. The mean realized fecundity of some kind of insects can be estimated by equation (5′ or 5″) using the estimates obtained by the present method.

Chen et al. (2014) described a suite of one-celled, Parapandorina-stage, Megaclonophycus-stage (some with dyads and tetrads), and matryoshka-stage fossils from the Doushantuo Formation, and interpreted them as representing a sequence of ontogenetic stages of the animal embryo-like fossil Megasphaera. Tang (2015) argues that the matryoshkas might have been parasites or symbionts, rather than developmental products of dyads and tetrads in Megaclonophycus-stage fossils. Assessing Tang's (2015) arguments against available evidence, we conclude that the matryoshkas likely represent an ontogenetic stage of Megasphaera. As such, they have the potential to illuminate the developmental biology, life cycle, and phylogenetic affinity of the enigmatic fossil Megasphaera.  相似文献

We study the stochastic susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model with time-dependent forcing using analytic techniques which allow us to disentangle the interaction of stochasticity and external forcing. The model is formulated as a continuous time Markov process, which is decomposed into a deterministic dynamics together with stochastic corrections, by using an expansion in inverse system size. The forcing induces a limit cycle in the deterministic dynamics, and a complete analysis of the fluctuations about this time-dependent solution is given. This analysis is applied when the limit cycle is annual, and after a period doubling when it is biennial. The comprehensive nature of our approach allows us to give a coherent picture of the dynamics which unifies past work, but which also provides a systematic method for predicting the periods of oscillations seen in whooping cough and measles epidemics.  相似文献

Grammaticality judgement tasks show that second language learners who started during childhood are significantly more accurate on judging inflection than learners who started after puberty [Johnson, J., & Newport, E. Production data confirmthat inflection is a bottleneck in adult language acquisition, and that they differ from child learners in this respect [Lardiere, D. (1998). Second Language Research, 14, 359–375; Prévost, P. (2003). Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 25, 65–97; Pre vost, P., & White, L. (2000). Second Language Research, 16(2), 103–133]. Although the observations suggest that the acquisition of inflection is influenced by age, there is no study that focuses on this particular issue nor is there an articulated explanation available for the observed age-related difference. In this contribution, we compare child L2 learners of Dutch to child L1 and adult L2 learners of Dutch in order to investigate effects of age on the acquisition of verbal and adjectival inflection. We hypothesize that adult agreement paradigms differ from child agreement paradigms, the reason being that adult learners cannot rely on syntactic cues, whereas children make reliable use of syntax in building paradigms. By effect, adult learners end up with non-targetlike small paradigms that contain underspecified suffixes. We focus on the types of errors in the three learner groups (child L1, child L2 and adult L2). Our empirical basis consists of results obtained in a series of production experiments. Artificial moonlight was recently shown to shift the endogenous clock of fruit flies and make them nocturnal. To test whether this nocturnal activity is partly due to masking effects of light, we exposed the clock‐mutants per01, tim01, per01;tim01, cyc01, and ClkJRK to light/dark and light/dim‐light cycles and determined the activity level during the day and night. We found that under moonlit nights, all clock mutants shifted their activity significantly into the night, suggesting that this effect is independent of the clock. We also recorded the flies under continuous artificial moonlight and darkness to judge the effect of dim constant light on the activity level. All mutants, except ClkJRK flies, were significantly more active under artificial moonlight conditions than under complete darkness. Unexpectedly, we found residual rhythmicity of per01 and especially tim01 mutants under these conditions, suggesting that TIM and especially PER retained some activity in the absence of its respective partner. Nevertheless, as even the double mutants and the cyc01 and ClkJRK mutants shifted their activity into the night, we conclude that dim light stimulates the activity of fruit flies in a clock‐independent manner. Thus, nocturnal light has a twofold influence on flies: it shifts the circadian clock, and it increases nocturnal activity independently of the clock. The latter was also observed in some primates by others and might therefore be of a more general validity.  相似文献

Freeman (2009, 2010) argue that Ediacara “faunas” should be analysed using “promorphologies” of extant animals, that rangeomorphs and erniettomorphs are colonial animals, and that Vernanimalcula is a bilaterian animal. Recent studies of Ediacara fossils have provided multiple lines of evidence that these fossils represent a sample of phylogenetically diverse marine organisms that included crown-group animals as well as stem-group animals and non-animals. Thus, it is inappropriate to analyse Ediacara fossils using “promorphologies” of extant animals. The interpretation of rangeomorphs and erniettomorphs as colonial animals is inconsistent with the functional morphologies of these Ediacara fossils. Although Vernanimalcula is a fossil, the purported germ layers of Vernanimalcula are of diagenetic origin and there is no morphological evidence in support of its bilaterian affinity.  相似文献

The su of human soft tissue over long periods of time after death by mummification is common knowledge. Egyptian and pre-Columbian mummies from America are the best-known examples of this process. The survival of human blood cells, the most fragile of all soft tissue, over a period of about 2200 years by a process of fossilization is a phenomenon which had not been observed previously. Fossilized blood cells were found during the paleopathological examination of skeletons of soldiers buried near a Hellenistic fortress. The fortress had been built on an island in the Arab-Persian Gulf subsequent to the oriental expeditions of Alexander the Great.  相似文献

The olfactory bulb (OB) of rodents has been suggested to possess a self-sustaining circadian oscillator which functions independent from the master circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus. However, neither histology nor physiology of this extra-SCN clock is studied yet. In the present study, we examined circadian variation of major clock gene expressions in the OB and responsiveness to single photic stimuli. Here we show significant circadian variation in the expression of clock genes, Per1, Per2 and Bmal1 in the OB. Per1 and PER2 were mainly expressed in the mitral cell and granular cell layers of the OB. Light responsiveness of Per1 and Per2 expression was different in the OB from that in the parietal cortex. Both Per1 and Per2 are expressed in the OB only by l000 lux light pulse, whereas 100 lux light was enough to induce Per1 mRNA in the parietal cortex. Interestingly, even 1000 lux light failed to induce Per2 mRNA in the parietal cortex. These clock gene-specific and brain region-dependent responses to lights in the OB and parietal cortex suggest that single light stimulus induces various physiological functions in different brain areas via specific clock gene.  相似文献

A mathematical model for the perturbation of a biological oscillator by single and periodic impulses is analyzed. In response to a single stimulus the phase of the oscillator is changed. If the new phase following a stimulus is plotted against the old phase the resulting curve is called the phase transition curve or PTC (Pavlidis, 1973). There are two qualitatively different types of phase resetting. Using the terminology of Winfree (1977, 1980), large perturbations give a type 0 PTC (average slope of the PTC equals zero), whereas small perturbations give a type 1 PTC. The effects of periodic inputs can be analyzed by using the PTC to construct the Poincaré or phase advance map. Over a limited range of stimulation frequency and amplitude, the Poincaré map can be reduced to an interval map possessing a single maximum. Over this range there are period doubling bifurcations as well as chaotic dynamics. Numerical and analytical studies of the Poincaré map show that both phase locked and non-phase locked dynamics occur. We propose that cardiac dysrhythmias may arise from desynchronization of two or more spontaneously oscillating regions of the heart. This hypothesis serves to account for the various forms of atrioventricular (AV) block clinically observed. In particular 22 and 42 AV block can arise by period doubling bifurcations, and intermittent or variable AV block may be due to the complex irregular behavior associated with chaotic dynamics.  相似文献

An increased understanding of the factors affecting behavioral and neurological responses to alcohol and alcohol physiology is necessary given the tremendous toll alcohol abuse and alcoholism exert on individuals and society. At the behavioral and molecular levels, the response to alcohol appears remarkably conserved from Drosophila to humans, suggesting that investigations across model species can provide insight into the identification of common modulatory factors. We investigated the interaction between the circadian clock and alcohol sensitivity, alcohol tolerance, and alcohol absorbance in Drosophila melanogaster. Using a loss-of-righting reflex (LoRR) assay, we found that flies exhibit a circadian rhythm in the LoRR, with the greatest sensitivity to alcohol occurring from mid to late night, corresponding to the flies' inactive phase. As predicted, a circadian rhythm in the LoRR was absent in circadian mutant flies and under conditions in which the circadian clock was nonfunctional. Circadian modulation of the response to alcohol was not due to circadian regulation of alcohol absorbance. Similar to other animals, Drosophila develop acute and chronic tolerance to alcohol upon repeat exposures. We found that the circadian clock did not modulate the development of acute alcohol tolerance measured as the difference in sensitivity to alcohol between naïve and pre-exposed flies. Thus, the circadian clock modulates some, but not all, of the behavioral responses to alcohol exposure, suggesting that specific mechanisms underlie the observed circadian modulation of LoRR rather than global cellular circadian regulation. This study provides valuable new insights in our understanding of the circadian modulation of alcohol-induced behaviors that ultimately could facilitate preventative measures in combating alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
