Several aspects of agonistic experience are described for freeranging infant rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta)on Cayo Santiago. Even before infants are fully integrated with peers in rank dominance based on maternal ranks, infants of highranking mothers tend to be threatened less frequently by other members of the group and are less likely to
be threatened by unfamiliar individuals than are infants of lowranking mothers. There is no evidence that fearful interactions
between pairs of infants are related to their mother’s ranks before 22 weeks of age. However, an imperfect hierarchy can be
constructed for infants between 27 and 30 weeks of age. At this age, infants of higherranking mothers are also more likely to receive protection when threatened than are infants of lowerranking
mothers. When protected, their protectors are less likely to emit fearful gestures to the infants’ threatener. Close female
relatives appear to play a large role in the protection of infants and may be more directly responsible for the differences
described above than the mother, other relatives, or other highranking members of the group. It is suggested that more than
one mechanism, including intervention by the mother and by close female relatives, may be important in rank acquisition among peers. 相似文献

This study reports on social modulation of exploratory behavior and response to novelty by members of a captive rhesus monkey colony. The group was trained to split in half, with one subgroup composed of dominant members only, the other of subordinates. The animals were then presented the same initially novel stimuli (i.e., sand-filled metal boxes containing hidden food items) in two social contexts differing in hierarchical composition. In a combined context, all group members (i.e., both subgroups together) were simultaneously presented the stimuli. In a split context, only members of the top or bottom half of the group (i.e., each subgroup in turn) was independently presented the stimuli. Subordinates responded similarly to dominant animals in the combined context but differently in the split context, where they were far more hesitant. Rank-related differences were evident in the way animals used their home compound and in their approach and responsiveness toward the stimuli. These findings show that social context influences how animals explore novel situations, possibly reflecting different social roles or status effects on the perception of social structure. Also, despite the complexity of primate social relationships, the separation technique produced no permanent or adverse effects on the social integrity of the group. This study shows that manipulating the social environment through separation training can be a powerful tool for assessing contextual influences on behavior. Am. J. This paper reviews aspects of life history that influence the reproductive success of male rhesus monkeys. Recent theories
propose that there is some optimum level of inbreeding for each population and that behaviors related to group transfer by
males are the result of selection pressure toward such an optimum. Group changing by males is clearly linked to the effects
of testosterone at sexual maturation. A male’s maternal genealogical rank is not consistently related to the age at which
it leaves the natal group, but social interactions within the natal group may influence the age of departure. Choice of the
new group is influenced by the operational sex ratio and the presence of maternal relatives. Rank in the new group is positively
correlated with seniority. Seniority, in turn, is influenced by the rank of the male’s natal group, his mother’s genealogical
rank, and the presence of male siblings in the new group. Much of this effect is due to the high mortality of males born to
females and/or groups of low rank. Most studies show a positive association between male reproductive success and rank. Males
from high-ranking groups and/or maternal genealogies that join groups containing brothers tend to remain in those groups longer,
attain a higher rank, and probably achieve higher levels of reproduction than other males. 相似文献

The accepted model of breeding seasonality in rhesus monkeys states that females become reproductively active in response to an environmental cue and that males become sexually active in response to ovulating females. This model must be modified to include direct responses of the male to the physical environment, endocrine responses of males to sexual activity, and responses of the female to the sexual activation of fellow group members. The complex set of social stimuli that influences the breeding readiness of both sexes may serve to delimit more precisely the annual periods of conception and birth than would be the case if each individual responded only to the changing physical environment. 相似文献

Changes in dominance rank for adolescent and subadult natal males in a semi-free-ranging rhesus macaque group were seasonal.
Three 4-year-old natal males of the highest-ranking matriline occupied high ranks in the adult male dominance hierarchy during
the premating period. In the mating season they dropped in rank, and this decrement was related to a concomitant drop in their
alliances. After the mating season, these males rose in rank along with their two 3-year-old kin to occupy ranks 2–5 and 7–8
in the adult male dominance hierarchy. Three-year-old natal males of matrilines lower ranking than first did not become integrated
into the hierarchy at this time. 相似文献

The distribution of four affiliative behaviors (proximity within 3 m, allogrooming, contact calling, and co-night-resting)
were examined in a group of wild patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) during a nonmating, nonbirth season. To a greater or lesser extent, dominance rank and kinship influenced these behaviors
of the adult females. Since high-ranking females tended to exhibit some of these behaviors with high frequency, they were
considered to be acting as the focus of affiliative behaviors and as the center for group cohesion. Furthermore, related adult
females also tended to exhibit some of these behaviors with a high frequency toward one another, so that matrilineal kinship
was also seen to be an important factor for group cohesion. In contrast, the harem male tended to exhibit these behaviors
at a low frequency and/or had no affiliative partner for any of them. Thus, it appears that the social organization of the
patas group is concentric, being composed of high-ranking females in the center, low-ranking females at the periphery, and
the harem male at the distant periphery. 相似文献

The influence of behavioral context and social characteristics on the physical aspects of social grooming in rhesus monkeys 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The extent to which dominance status and sex can influence the physical act of grooming was examined in two groups of rhesus
monkeys. Both the sex and the dominance status of the groomee, but not of the groomer, were found to affect the body sites
groomed and the positions assumed by the animals during the grooming bout. Females were groomed more on the back and head
and less on the tail, rump, upper leg, and lower arm than males. Females with infants tended to face away from the groomer.
Higher-ranking groomees were groomed more on the tail and rump and less on the upper leg and back than lower-ranking groomees.
Higher-ranking groomees spent more time lying down during grooming than lower-ranking groomees, while lower-ranking groomees
faced away from the groomer more then higher-ranking groomees. The behavioral interactions just prior to and immediately after
grooming were also recorded. Although the onset of grooming was preceded by social interactions between the partners, the
end of grooming was followed by a complete break in interactions. Particular types of social signals displayed by the groomee
just prior to grooming were highly correlated with the grooming of specific body sites. These results suggest that the groomee
controls the behavior of the groomer by the social signals it displays and the positions it maintains during the grooming
bout. Thus, the grooming act itself may play an important role in the social relationships between group members. 相似文献

The paternity of 202 of 220 offspring of rhesus monkeys housed in six separate half-acre field cages at the California Primate Research Center was determined by genetic marker techniques. Reproductive success of the adult males was statistically significantly correlated (r = 0.76, P <0.0005) with rank. Marked systematic changes in reproductive success were, however, observed for two adult males during the three years covered by this study. Based upon these results and those of another study, it is argued that changes in rank position typically follow, rather than precede, changes in reproductive success. 相似文献

Social relationships of adult male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were studied over a period of 14 months. Sixteen focal males were chosen from a single group in the Cayo Santiago colony,
Puerto Rico. Immatures were defined as infants, yearlings and 2-year-olds. There was a tendency for males to spend more time
in proximity to immatures in the birth seasons than in the mating season. Time spent in proximity to immatures was correlated
with male dominance rank. Several male-immature dyads had persistent relationships and nine were apparent throughout the study
period. Most of the latter involved the top-ranking males. There were no consistent effects of sex or rank of the immature
on the distribution of persistent relationships. In almost all male-immature dyads the immature was primarily responsible
for maintaining proximity. Two ways were found in which immatures could benefit from these relationships. Protection and agonistic
aiding of immatures by adult males were rare, but occurred exclusively in dyads with persistent relationships. In addition,
immatures apparently gained greater access to food resources as a result of their relationships with adult males. There was
no clear evidence of adult males benefiting from these relationships. 相似文献

Young (3–4 years old) laboratory-reared rhesus monkeys were observed in five 15-minute tests with 1–15-day-old infants. Males and females were equally likely to investigate infants. Females communicated more with infants by grin-lipsmacking and gurgling–-gestures that were not shown by any males. More females presented the ventrum to infants than did males. Females contacted infants more than did males by grooming, crouching over, and having full body contact with them. To see whether prenatal androgens produced the male pattern of response, we conducted similar tests with pseudohermaphrodites (prenatally androgenized genetic females) and neonatally castrated males. On most sexually dimorphic behaviors, pseudohermaphrodites behaved more like females than like males. Castrated males, like females and pseudohermaphrodites, crouched over infants more than did intact males. Castrated males differed from females only on one infant-directed response, the grin-lipsmack. These comparisons showed that defeminization of the repertoire of infant-directed responses was measurable only in intact males. We conclude accordingly that prenatal androgens alone are not responsible for defeminization of this repertoire and that a contribution from postnatal androgens is likely to be necessary. 相似文献

Although most primates live in groups, experiments on reciprocity usually test individuals in dyads. This could hide the processes emerging in richer social settings, reducing the ecological validity of the results. We run an experiment on reciprocal food transfers testing capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) in triads, so that subjects could choose to allow access to their food to either of their two partners. We tested the hypothesis that partner choice was related to a comparison of long-term social bonds with the two partners, more than to a comparison of recent food transfer events from the two partners. The results confirmed this hypothesis, thus supporting the notion that reciprocal partner preferences are based on long-term accounts of benefits that have been exchanged. 相似文献

We have examined the possibility that prolonged visual contact between future sexual partners, in the absence of any direct sexual contact and mating activity, is sufficient to produce the familiar-female phenomenon and is associated loss of male potency. For 1 year, 32 intact, feral-reared male rhesus monkeys were housed so that 14 males were in constant visual contact with their four future testing females, and 18 of the males were without any visual contact with females. After 1 year, each male was then tested once with each ovariectomized, estrogen-treated female (128 tests). Males in the group having prolonged prior visual contact (group II) were significantly less potent than males without prior visual contact (group I), and this difference was not related to plasma testosterone levels, prior history, time since capture, or presumed age. Group II males had fewer ejaculations during tests and ejaculated with fewer partners, and this appeared to be because they required significantly more stimulation (mounting and thrusting) to reach ejaculation. The data suggested that the familiar-partner phenomenon was not restricted to the male and was associated with increased social affinity and decreased agonistic tension between partners. Under natural conditions, the phenomenon may encourage troop transfers and outbreeding, and in laboratory studies, prior visual contact between testing partners should be regarded as a potentially uncontrolled source of variation. 相似文献

The practicability of social enrichment for singly caged adult rhesus monkeys was examined. Twenty-nine weaned rhesus monkey infants were removed from breeding troops to avoid overcrowding and were placed with unfamiliar singly caged adults. An adult-infant pair was considered compatible when (1) the two animals started huddling with each other within the first 5 days after pair formation and (2) the infant showed no signs of depression and took its share from a limited amount of favored food. Adult-infant pairs were compatible in 90% (26/29) of cases. Compatibility depended neither on the sex, age, and origin of the adult nor on the sex of the infant. There was no evidence that partners lost interest in each other during 7–11 months of follow-up observations. Three adults exhibiting stereotypical behavior abandoned their peculiar habits after they had lived with their young companions for 4 months. It was concluded that the often-heard notion that rhesus monkeys are highly aggressive should not prevent simple attempts to provide singly caged animals with a companion. 相似文献

Identifying predictors of teenage alcohol use disorder (AUDs) is a major health initiative, with studies suggesting that there are distinct personality-related traits that underlie patterns of alcohol intake. As temperament is biologically based, identifiable early in life, and stable across time, it is considered the foundation of personality. As such, we hypothesized that neonatal temperament traits would predict anxiety-mediated adolescent alcohol consumption. To test this, N = 145 rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) infants (14 days of age), reared in a neonatal nursery (n = 82) or in a control condition with their mothers (n = 63) were assessed with a widely used standardized nonhuman primate testing battery, the Infant Behavioral Assessment Scale (IBAS), modeled after the Brazelton Neonatal Assessment Scale, evaluating visual orienting, temperament, motor maturity and, more recently, sensory sensitivity. As adolescents (3–4 years of age), these same subjects were allowed unfettered access to a sweetened-alcohol solution for 1 hr/day, 4 days/week, over 5–7 weeks. Subjects were allowed to self-administer alcohol while housed alone (n = 70) or socially in their home cage (n = 55). Linear regressions showed that alcohol intake was predicted by neonatal orienting ability (β = −.35; p = .01), state control (β = −.19; p = .04), and motor maturity (β = −.24; p = .01). Poor neonatal orienting, state control (ease of consolability), and motor maturity were associated with higher adolescent alcohol intake in rhesus monkeys. These findings suggest that neonatal temperament is predictive of patterns of adolescent alcohol intake. To the extent that these results generalize to humans, they provide evidence that early-life temperament and neurodevelopment may be important risk factors for adolescent AUDs and that the IBAS may be used as an assessment tool for identifying such risk. 相似文献

Social instability can adversely affect endocrine, immune and health outcomes, and recent evidence suggests that the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) might mediate these effects. We conducted two studies with adult male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) to understand how social conditions affect measures of SNS activity and immune function. In Experiment 1, animals were socialized in stable social conditions, then were switched to unstable (stressful) social conditions, then were returned to stable conditions. Analysis revealed quadratic effects for measures of behaviour, urinary metabolites of epinephrine and norepinephrine, and expression of immune response genes: as expected, social instability adversely impacted most measures, and the effects remediated upon re-imposition of stable conditions. Cortisol levels were unaffected. In Experiment 2, we used the sympathomimetic drug methamphetamine to challenge the SNS; animals also underwent socialization in stable or unstable groups. Surprisingly, while methamphetamine elevated plasma catecholamines, responses in lymph nodes tracked the social, and not the drug, condition: social instability upregulated the density of SNS fibres in lymph nodes and downregulated Type I interferon gene expression. Together, these results indicate that the SNS is extremely sensitive to social conditions; full understanding of the adverse effects of social instability on health should therefore incorporate measures of this health-relevant system. 相似文献
