Background and Aims

Formation of calcium oxalate crystals is common in the plant kingdom, but biogenic formation of calcium sulfate crystals in plants is rare. We investigated the morphologies and elemental compositions of crystals found in phyllodes and branchlets of Acacia robeorum, a desert shrub of north-western Australia.

Methods

Morphologies of crystals in phyllodes and branchlets of A. robeorum were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and elemental compositions of the crystals were identified by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Distributional patterns of the crystals were studied using optical microscopy together with SEM.

Key Results

According to the elemental compositions, the crystals were classified into three groups: (1) calcium oxalate; (2) calcium sulfate, which is a possible mixture of calcium sulfate and calcium oxalate with calcium sulfate being the major component; and (3) calcium sulfate · magnesium oxalate, presumably mixtures of calcium sulfate, calcium oxalate, magnesium oxalate and silica. The crystals were of various morphologies, including prisms, raphides, styloids, druses, crystal sand, spheres and clusters. Both calcium oxalate and calcium sulfate crystals were observed in almost all tissues, including mesophyll, parenchyma, sclerenchyma (fibre cells), pith, pith ray and cortex; calcium sulfate · magnesium oxalate crystals were only found in mesophyll and parenchyma cells in phyllodes.

Conclusions

The formation of most crystals was biologically induced, as confirmed by studying the crystals formed in the phyllodes from seedlings grown in a glasshouse. The crystals may have functions in removing excess calcium, magnesium and sulfur, protecting the plants against herbivory, and detoxifying aluminium and heavy metals.  相似文献

A method of isolation of crystalline inclusions of plant cellsis described. The crystals consist mainly of calcium oxalatein plants grown under normal conditions, but when calcium isreplaced by magnesium, barium, or strontium in the culture solutionthese elements substitute for calcium in the crystals; evenunder normal conditions magnesium occurs in the crystals tothe extent of about 2 per cent. The crystal morphology vanesin the species examined from raphides to complex conglomeratesand X-ray diffraction demonstrates an association of raphideswith calcium oxalate monohydrate whilst other solitary formsand conglomerates are associated with calcium oxalate 2.25H2O.On this basis the species examined can be divided mto threegroups.  相似文献

Since calcium plays an important role in vitellogenin binding and uptake in Nauphoeta cinerea and because calcium channels have been described in follicles of this species, we investigated the effect of various ions, ionophores, and ion channel blockers on vitellogenin uptake in vitro. Calcium significantly stimulated vitellogenin uptake; this effect could be substituted best by barium and less well by strontium and magnesium. The stimulatory effect of calcium, and to a certain extent also that of barium, was dependent on the vitellogenin concentration, whereas the effect of strontium and magnesium was not. In the presence of calcium, vitellogenin uptake was inhibited by barium, strontium, and magnesium as well as by the transition elements nickel, cobalt, and zinc, but not by manganese which had a stimulatory effect. Valinomycin, verapamil, tetraethylammonium, and atropine reduced vitellogenin uptake, while amiloride and ouabain were ineffective. Our results indicate that calcium inward (and possibly potassium outward) fluxes play an important role in vitellogenin uptake.  相似文献

We determined effects of venation traits on hydraulic conductance of phyllodes (foliage), using an array of Acacia s.str. species with diverse phyllode morphologies as the source of variation. Measurements were made on phyllodes from 44 species, grown in common gardens but originating from different positions along a precipitation gradient. K(phyllode) varied 18-fold and was positively correlated with primary nerve hydraulic conductance, and with primary nerve (vein) density but not with minor nerve density, in contrast with previous studies of true leaves in other dicotyledons. Phyllodes with higher primary nerve density also had greater mass per area (PMA) and larger bundle sheath extensions (BSEs) from their minor nerves. We suggest that higher primary nerve conductivity and density may decrease the distance travelled in the high-resistance extra-xylem pathways of the phyllode. Further, larger BSEs may increase the area available for dispersion of water from the xylem to the extra-xylem tissue. High PMA phyllodes were more common in acacias from areas receiving lower annual precipitation. Maximizing efficient water movement through phyllodes may be more important where rainfall is meagre and infrequent, explaining relationships between nerve patterns and the climates of origin in Australian phyllodinous Acacia.  相似文献

本文探讨了科尔沁沙地土壤盐分对该区盐生植物群落复合体的形成、种类组成、水平分布格局和物种多样性的影响,阐明了在不同土壤盐分条件下同种植物体内K、Na、Ca、Mg总量的恒定性和Na含量的变化规律。根据植物体内Na含量和K、Na、Ca、Mg的组成比例,提出了植物对盐碱地的适应类型及其划分方法,并以此法将本区草甸植物归为4种类型:Na>K>Ca>Mg型;K>Na>Ca、Mg型;K>Na、Ca、Mg型和K>Ca、Mg>Na型。  相似文献

Young plants of Phaseolus and Canavalia were grown in nutrient solutions where calcium had been partially or totally replaced by either strontium or sodium. The deleterious effect of this replacement on growth and development was greater with strontium than with sodium. As the calcium content of the nutrient solution was decreased fewer calcium oxalate crystals were formed in leaf tissues. There were fewer crystals formed when calcium was replaced by strontium than by sodium. Changes in solubility characteristics of the crystals indicated that they had incorporated strontium.  相似文献

Lamellar single crystals of alkaline earth salts of poly(L -glutamic acid) have been grown by precipitation from dilute aqueous solution and studied by optical and electron microscopy and by x-ray and electron diffraction. The calcium, strontium and barium salts were crystallized in the β form above room temperature and could be converted to crystals of β-poly(L -glutamic acid) by washing in dilute hydrochloric acid. The magnesium salt, on the other hand, was crystallized in the α form at or below room temperature but could not be converted into crystals of α-poly(L -glutamic acid) by washing in hydrochloric acid. The crystalline lamellae are very thin (thicknesses range from 25 to 60 Å in β crystals and are about 100 Å in α crystals) and the polypeptide chains are oriented normal to the planes of the lamellae. It is clear from the disparity between crystal thickness and molecular length that the molecules crystallize by folding at the upper and lower surfaces of the crystals. Conformations of the molecules at these folds are discussed briefly.  相似文献

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA ICP-MS) was employed to image deposits of calcium phosphate based crystals in knee cartilage and synovial fluid from arthritic patients. A reaction/collision cell containing hydrogen minimised plasma interferences on calcium and also improved the image quality without significant sensitivity reduction. Areas of high calcium and phosphorus intensities consistent with crystal deposits were observed for both the cartilage and synovial fluid samples. These areas were also characterised by high magnesium and strontium intensities. Distribution patterns of other elements such as copper and sulfur did not correlate with the crystal deposits. Filtered and non-filtered solutions of calcium phosphate crystals grown in synthetic synovial fluid were also imaged as further evidence of crystal deposits. The crystal deposits were detected in the unfiltered solution, and were absent from the filtered solutions.  相似文献

—The effects of various cations on the calcium-binding properties of a brain phosphoprotein have been investigated employing an ultrafiltration binding assay. Sodium, magnesium, barium, strontium and manganese ions were competitive inhibitors of the calcium binding, and their affinity for the calcium-binding site increased in the order given. Potassium was a non-competitive inhibitor. Lanthanum, lead, mercuric and cadmium ions precipitated the phosphoprotein from solution. These findings are discussed in relation to a postulated role for the protein as a calcium-receptor molecule involved in release of neurotransmitters.  相似文献

The solubilities of monocalcium and monomagnesium diglutamate and calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium glutamate in water were measured in respect to both the l-form and the dl-form to conjecture the constitution of the racemic modification of each salt. It was concluded from the result that only magnesium dl-glutamate among six saltsis a congromerate and the others except the barium salt are all racemic compounds. The conclusion was supported by results from measurements of the infrared spectra and the X-ray diffractions. As for barium glutamate, a definite conclusion could not be obtained, but its racemic form seems to be congromerate or a racemic compound with a weak affinity between the isomers. Optical resolution based on the inoculation method was tried for calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium dl-glutamate, and the selective crystallization of the active form from the supersaturated solutions of magnesium and calcium dl-glutamate proceeded, though the process was unstable in the latter case; on the other hand, the resolutions of barium and strontium dl-glutamates were quite unsuccessful.  相似文献

The interaction is reported of selected chemical elements (cadmium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, strontium, and zinc) in cultured sea water, with soft tissues, prismatic calcite of the right valve, and foliated calcite of right and left valves of genetically similar American oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) grown in a natural habitat and in two environmentally controlled experimental systems (flow-through and recycle). The addition of trace elements as algal nutrients in ambient sea water was reflected in higher concentrations of trace metals in shells and soft tissues of oysters grown in experimental systems. Calcium was relatively uniformly distributed in major regions of valves from the three habitats, even though its concentration fluctuated widely in sea water in experimental systems. Magnesium and strontium were most concentrated in valves of oysters grown in the recycle system (magnesium in the prismatic layer of the shell and strontium in the foliated calcite). Iron was uniformly distributed. Cadmium, copper, manganese, and zinc were most concentrated in the prismatic calcite of valves from the flow-through system. In soft tissues, calcium was more concentrated in oysters from experimental systems than in those from the natural habitat. Manganese was about equally distributed in soft tissues from the three habitats, whereas copper and iron were more concentrated in soft tissues in experimental systems than in the natural habitat, and were many times more concentrated in soft tissues than in valves from all three habitats. As concentrations of magnesium, strontium, mangenese, zinc, and cadmium increased in valves in experimental systems, pigmentation of valves decreased. The study confirmed the capacity of oysters to concentrate several elements in their valves as concentration of these elements increased in ambient sea water and disclosed the heterogeneous distribution of these elements in major regions of the valves.  相似文献

Crystals in 16 species of poisonous plants growing naturally in Saudi Arabia were studied with light microscopy. Three types of crystals were observed: druses, prismatics, and crystal sand. Raphides and styloids were not observed in any of the species studied. Druses occur more frequently in the leaf midrib and in the cortex and pith of the stem. In contrast, crystal sand and prismatic crystals are rare and occur in the leaf, intercostal lamina, and in the vascular tissues. The preliminary results show the absence of the three types of calcium oxalate crystals in the stem and leaf of seven species: Ammi majus L., Anagallis arvensis L., Calotropis procera Ait., Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schard, Euphorbia peplis L., Hyoscyamus muticus L., and Solarium nigrum L., and the presence of druses, prismatic crystals, and crystal sand either in the leaf and stem or in the leaves or stems of nine species: Anabasis articulata (Forssk.) Moq. in DC., Chenopodium album L., Convolvulus arvensis L., Datura stramonium L., Nerium oleander L., Ricinus communis L., Rumex nervosus Vahl., Pergularia tomentosa L., and Withania somnifera (L.) Dun. in DC. These observations indicate that there is no apparent relationship between the distribution of calcium oxalate crystals and the toxic organs of the plants, and supports the view that the presence of calcium oxalate crystals may not be related to plant toxicity.  相似文献

Vanadium and sulphur were found by X-ray microanalysis in three different cell types, morula cells, signet-ring cells, and granular amoebocytes, from each of the ascidians Ascidia mentula (Müller) and Ascidiella aspersa (Müller). In addition to the cells containing vanadium and sulphur a few vacuolar cells containing high concentrations of iron, magnesium and calcium were also found. After fixation in the presence of strontium or barium chlorides another cell type containing large amounts of precipitated sulphur was also found, confirming our previous findings that many haemolymph cells in these species contain large amounts of sulphate only. The presence of these various cell types is discussed in relation to the question of the acidity of ascidian blood cells.  相似文献

The effects of barium, strontium and magnesium upon lens permeability characteristics were studied in the presence and absence of 2 mM calcium in the bathing medium. Permeability characteristics were determined by measuring lens potential, resistance and 42K efflux rates. Barium and strontium at equimolar concentrations to calcium were able to substitute for calcium in controlling lens sodium permeability. Magnesium was ineffective in this respect.Small changes in resistance and 42K efflux rates occurred when calcium was eliminated from bathing solution containing either 2 mM barium or strontium. These changes were interpreted to be the result of an increase in lens permeability to potassium. When 2 mM strontium was added to calcium-containing solution, there was no significant change in the electrical or flux parameters of the lens. However, the addition of 2 mM barium to calcium-containing solution resulted in a 54% increase in lens resistance and a 13 mV depolarization. These observations indicated a barium-induced decrease in lens permeability to potassium, and this was confirmed by an observed decrease in 42K efflux rate constant under similar experimental conditions.The rapid time course of all the observed changes implies that they are the result of changes in the permeability characteristics of membranes lying close to the surface of the lens.  相似文献

The magnitude of debarking by elephants was investigated in Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves. About 1617 plants were monitored for debarking intensities for 6 months spanning through dry and wet seasons. Debarking indices ranged from no debarking at all during the wet months to complete stem girding at the height of the dry season. A negative correlation was found between rainfall and debarking indices. It was hypothesized that nutrient content of the bark influenced the magnitude to which trees were debarked. Bark samples were collected from least, moderate and intensely debarked plants throughout the 6 months. These were analysed for calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), nitrogen (N), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn). Significant positive correlations were found between debarking intensity and each of the nutrients N [crude protein (CP)], P, K and Zn. Bark was found to be richest in CP and Calcium. Neutral detergent fibre content was on average 67%. Monthly variations in nutrient composition were minimal. Acacia elatior, the most preferred species had significantly higher quantities of each of the four elements N, P, K and Zn than Acacia tortilis, the second most preferred woody species.  相似文献

Foerster, Harold F. (The University of Texas, Austin), and J. W. Foster. Endotrophic calcium, strontium, and barium spores of Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus cereus. J. Bacteriol. 91:1333-1345. 1966.-Spores were produced by washed vegetative cells suspended in deionized water supplemented with CaCl(2), SrCl(2), or BaCl(2). Normal, refractile spores were produced in each case; a portion of the barium spores lost refractility and darkened. Thin-section electron micrographs revealed no apparent anatomical differences among the three types of spores. Analyses revealed that the different spore types were enriched specifically in the metal to which they were exposed during sporogenesis. The calcium content of the strontium and the barium spores was very small. From binary equimolar mixtures of the metal salts, endotrophic spores accumulated both metals to nearly the same extent. Viability of the barium spores was considerably less than that of the other two types. Strontium and barium spores were heat-resistant; however, calcium was essential for maximal heat resistance. Significant differences existed in the rates of germination; calcium spores germinated fastest, strontium spores were slower, and barium spores were slowest. Calcium-barium and calcium-strontium spores germinated readily. Endotrophic calcium and strontium spores germinated without the prior heat activation essential for growth spores. Chemical germination of the different metal-type spores with n-dodecylamine took place at the same relative rates as physiological germination. Heat-induced release of dipicolinic acid occurred much faster with barium and strontium spores than with calcium spores. The washed "coat fraction" from disrupted spores contained little of the spore calcium but most of the spore barium. The metal in this fraction was released by dilute acid. The demineralized coats reabsorbed calcium and barium at neutral pH.  相似文献

The solution conformations of complexes of valinomycin with magnesium and strontium were investigated by circular dichroism, nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared techniques. The results were compared with our earlier results on lithium, calcium, manganese and barium complexes. All these cations, except lithium, form 2:1 ion sandwich and 1:1 carrier-cation complexes with valinomycin. The 1:1 complex has a conformation different from that of the valinomycin-potassium complex. Lithium forms only the 1:1 complex. Strontium and barium form a large number of 1:2 complexes with open conformations rapidly interconverting in solution in addition to the above 2:1 and 1:1 complexes. These observations are rationalized taking into account the ionic radii and coordination numbers of the cations and the conformational restraints of valinomycin molecules. It is suggested that cations with co-ordination numbers of about six (magnesium and calcium) form the 2:1 and 1:1 complexes whereas those with higher co-ordination numbers (strontium and barium) form 1:2 complexes also.  相似文献

Summary. Calcium oxalate crystals are by far the most prevalent and widely distributed mineral deposits in higher plants. In Tradescantia pallida, an evergreen perennial plant widely used as an ornamental plant, calcium oxalate crystals occur in the parenchymal tissues of stem, leaf, and root, as well as in flower organs, in the form of either raphides or tetragonal prismatic crystals or both. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis revealed that C, O, and Ca were the main elements; and K, Cl, and Si, the minor elements. Infrared and X-ray analyses of crystals collected from these tissues detected the coexistence of two calcium oxalate chemical forms, i.e., whewellite and weddellite, as well as calcite, opal, and sylvite. Here, we show for the first time the occurrence of epitaxy in mineral crystals of plants. Epitaxy, which involves the oriented overgrowth of one crystal onto a second crystalline substrate, might explain how potassium chloride (sylvite) – one of the most water-soluble salts – stays insoluble in crystal form when coated with a calcium oxalate epilayer. The results indicate the potential role of crystals in regulating the ionic equilibrium of both calcium and potassium ions. This article deals with an osteoporosis model using New Zealand rabbits in order to study the function of inorganic elements for women patients with osteoporosis. Thirty cases of iliac crests were collected and determined using the neutron activation analysis technique. The results show that the fluorine concentrations in the experimental group are higher than those in the control group and that the magnesium concentrations are significantly lower (p < 0.001), but the concentrations of potassium, sodium, calcium, barium, manganese, and strontium show no significant differences. Combined with the serum biochemical markers of bone formation and resorption, the physiological functions of some metal elements in bone are also discussed.  相似文献
