Given that it has been shown that urohyal bones can be used to identify gerreid fish to the species level, predictive regression equations between urohyal size and fish standard length and weight of thirteen species of Gerreidae living along the coasts of Mexico, were calculated. All regressions were statistically significant with coefficients of variation and coefficient of determination values around 0.90 in most of cases. These regression equations could provide a reliable tool in trophic ecology and other studies by estimating the original body size and weight of fish from measuring urohyal bone lengths. Information provide from the urohyal bone-fish length and weight relationships also facilitates the assessment of the potential role of gerreid fish found in the diet of piscivorous species from Mexican waters.  相似文献

Ontogenetic diet patterns and trophic guild structure of a 15 species temperate lake fish assemblage were analysed over wide size intervals (up to seven orders of magnitude in body mass), representing practically the whole life span in most species. A two-step objective clustering technique supplemented with other multivariate statistical tools proved that size-related diet changes clearly played an important role in structuring trophic organization of fishes inhabiting Lake Balaton. As many as 13 out of the 15 fish species showed marked size-related dietary changes with two to four ontogenetic feeding stages. At the assemblage level, 11 trophic guilds were separated. Guild membership was size-dependent in 11 fish species that participated in two to four trophic guilds during their life span. The most complex trophic ontogeny was observed in roach Rutilus rutilus and asp Aspius aspius with four guild memberships. This study showed that trophic status of fishes may be very size-sensitive and thus a universal classification of fish species to general trophic guilds, such as 'planktivore', 'benthivore', 'piscivore' or 'herbivore', should be applied very carefully even in environmental monitoring and fisheries management applications, unless it is supported by relevant results of life span diet analyses.  相似文献

Detailed information of fish diets is required if we are to understand complex interactions between species and successfully manage resources at an ecosystem level. We compiled diet information from 76 species of fish targeted by recreational and commercial fishers in North West Australia. Based on 81 independent studies we demonstrate that species targeted by the fishery are all carnivores, however the type of prey they consume and their trophic level is variable (3.31–4.49) and trophic range of some species spans different trophic levels (e.g. Lethrinus nebulosus, 3.46–4.35). These findings infer that in highly diverse systems, such as coral reefs, trophic cascades instigated by fishing must be investigated at the species, rather than functional or trophic level. Moreover, as prey availability is likely to vary spatially and temporally, diet must be quantified locally to assess ecosystem level impacts of fishing.  相似文献

Thiamine concentrations were monitored in various organisms ranging from plankton to fish in the Lake Ontario ecosystem. The low concentrations found in most samples indicated thiamine levels were not strongly influenced by the trophic status of an organism. A similar conclusion was indicated from data reported by other studies in freshwater and marine ecosystems. Thiamine is produced by microbes and microalgae, and is acquired by higher trophic level organisms through the diet. The issue of thiamine deficiency in wild fish was also examined. It was concluded that increased dietary consumption of prey containing thiaminase was an important factor that can reduce thiamine levels in higher trophic level species.  相似文献

Knowing the trophic level of marine organisms is essential to understanding their ecological role in the ecosystem and for quantifying the ecosystem effects of fishing to establish effective management of fishing resources. In comparison to other systems, information about the trophic level of marine organisms in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea is very scarce. Here, the main aim was to estimate trophic level in these areas using all available diet information from different marine species using TrophLab software. The trophic level of 32 fish species was estimated with the available diet data. The trophic level ranged from 2.28 to 4.50. High trophic levels were found for Chorocentrus nudus (TL = 4.7), Saurida tumbil (TL = 4.6), Rhizoprionodon acutus (TL = 4.5), Torpedo sinuspersici (TL=4.5), Gymnura poecilura (TL = 4.5), Sphyraena putnamae (TL = 4.5) and Euthynnus affinis (TL = 4.5). In contrast, lower trophic levels were estimated for Tenualosa ilisha (TL = 2.28) and Sardinella sindensis (TL = 2.92). As expected, a positive correlation was found between the trophic level and body size, indicating changes in the diet due to variations in predatory capacities. The results of this study may be useful in the formulation of trophic indicators and modelling of the ecosystems.  相似文献

Within food webs, trophically transmitted helminth parasites use predator–prey links for their own transfer from intermediate prey hosts, in which they occur as larval or juvenile stages, to predatory definitive hosts, in which they reach maturity. In large taxa that can be used as intermediate and/or definitive hosts, such as fish, a host species’ position within a trophic network should determine whether its parasite fauna consists mostly of adult or larval helminths, since vulnerability to predation determines an animal’s role in predator–prey links. Using a large database on the helminth parasites of 303 fish species, we tested whether the proportion of parasite species in a host that occur as larval or juvenile stages is best explained by their trophic level or by their body size. Independent of fish phylogeny or habitat, only fish body length emerged as a significant predictor of the proportion of parasites in a host that occur as larval stages from our multivariate analyses. On average, the proportion of larval helminth taxa in fish shorter than 20 cm was twice as high as that for fish over 100 cm in length. This is consistent with the prediction that small fishes, being more vulnerable to predation, make better hosts for larval parasites. However, trophic level and body length are strongly correlated among fish species, and they may have separate though confounded effects on the parasite fauna exploiting a given species. Helminths show varying levels of host specificity toward their intermediate host when the latter is the downstream host involved in trophic transmission toward an upstream definitive host. Given this broad physiological compatibility of many helminths with fish hosts, our results indicate that fish body length, as a proxy for vulnerability to predators, is a better predictor of their use by helminth larvae than their trophic level based on diet content.  相似文献

Worldwide, local anthropogenic extinctions have recently been reported to induce trophic cascades, defined as perturbations of top consumers that propagate along food chains down to primary producers. This focus on the effects of top‐consumer extinction (i.e. of species presence) ignores potential cascading effects of the rapid morphological changes that may precede extinction. Here, we show in an experimental, three‐level food chain including medaka fish, herbivorous zooplankton and unicellular algae that varying body length of a single fish from large (36.3 mm) to small (11.5 mm) induced a stronger trophic cascade than varying an average‐sized (23.8 mm) fish from being present to absent. The strength of fish predation on zooplankton scaled quasi linearly (not with a power exponent) with fish body length and associated gape width, suggesting that the resultant trophic cascade was morphology (not metabolism)‐dependent. The effect of fish body length was stronger on phyto‐ than on zooplankton, because large‐sized fish had the unique ability to suppress large‐sized herbivores, which in turn had high grazing capacities. Hence, our results show that consumer body size, by setting diet breadth, can both drive and magnify the strength of trophic cascades. In contrast, fish body shape had no significant effect on fish predatory performances when its allometric component (the effect of size on shape) was removed. In the wild, human‐induced body downsizing of top consumers is widespread, and mitigating the resultant perturbations to ecosystem function and services will require a paradigm shift from preserving species presence towards preserving species size structure.  相似文献

The diets and trophic guilds of small fishes were examined along marine sandy beaches and in estuaries at depths <1·5 m in western Taiwan, Republic of China. Copepods were the most frequently identified item in fish guts, indicating they are key prey for the fish assemblages studied. Piscivore, crustacivore, detritivore, omnivore, zooplanktivore and terrestrial invertivore trophic guilds were identified. The zooplanktivore guild contained the most fish species. Maximum prey size consumption was positively correlated with standard length (LS) in seven species and at the assemblage level and negatively correlated with LS in a single detritivorous species. The diet data and trophic guild scheme produced by this study contribute to an understanding of coastal marine food webs and can inform ecosystem‐based fisheries management.  相似文献

The flatfish Citharichthys spilopterus Günther 1862 is the most common bothid in the coastal lagoons of the Gulf of Mexico. The objective of the present study was to describe the trophic biology of this species in the tropical coastal lagoon of Tampamachoco, Mexico. For the diet analysis, we used multivariate discriminant analysis and trophic niche breadth. The morphological analysis showed that the features of the bucco-pharyngeal cavity, the large stomach and the short intestine of this flatfish relate to a carnivorous habit. The overall diet showed that this species is a third-order consumer, feeding mainly on fish (52%, mainly gobies) and crustaceans (36%, mostly decapods). Diet and trophic niche breadth showed no significant differences between sexes (P > 0.1). By contrast, there were significant ontogenetic differences in the diet and trophic niche breadth, where larger C. spilopterus were almost entirely piscivorous and showed the narrowest trophic niche. As the flatfish grew in size there was a trend toward the consumption of larger prey. The importance of copepods and peracarids correlated inversely with flatfish size (P < 0.001), but fish prey correlated directly to flatfish size (P < 0.001). Likewise, there was an inverse significant correlation between niche trophic breadth and flatfish size (P < 0.005). There were also significant seasonal differences in the diet (P < 0.02), related to the availability and vulnerability of prey in the lagoon during the dry and rainy seasons. However, the trophic niche showed no significant differences between seasons. Finally, we discuss the advantages of discriminant analysis applied to evaluate differences among diets of fish groups when compared with other bivariate and multivariate techniques.  相似文献

The ecological significance of fish and squid of the mesopelagic zone (200 m–1000 m) is evident by their pervasiveness in the diets of a broad spectrum of upper pelagic predators including other fishes and squids, seabirds and marine mammals. As diel vertical migrators, mesopelagic micronekton are recognized as an important trophic link between the deep scattering layer and upper surface waters, yet fundamental aspects of the life history and energetic contribution to the food web for most are undescribed. Here, we present newly derived regression equations for 32 species of mesopelagic fish and squid based on the relationship between body size and the size of hard parts typically used to identify prey species in predator diet studies. We describe the proximate composition and energy density of 31 species collected in the eastern Bering Sea during May 1999 and 2000. Energy values are categorized by body size as a proxy for relative age and can be cross-referenced with the derived regression equations. Data are tabularized to facilitate direct application to predator diet studies and food web models.  相似文献

Brush park fishery in Negombo estuary, Sri Lanka is a traditional fishing practice which relies on fishes attracted to artificial woody fish aggregation devices. This study investigates whether constituent species in these brush parks exhibit morphological variations in relation to their dietary habits. Fishes caught in brush parks were sampled from April 2014 to April 2016 covering rainy, intermediate and dry seasons. There were 817 specimens of 46 species belonging to 24 families. From each specimen, 17 morphological attributes were determined and diet composition of each species was analyzed in terms of relative biovolume. Trophic index of each species estimated from the proportions of dietary items and their possible trophic level in the community was significantly related to two body proportions (Maximum body height/Maximum body width and Total length/ Maximum body height) which described shape of fish. Principal component analysis of morphometric attributes and dietary habits indicated that the species in the higher trophic levels are characterized by slender, long-body shapes and those occupy lower trophic levels are predominantly laterally compressed with deep body shapes. As such, structure of coexisting species in brush parks of Negombo estuary is predominantly along the trophic dimension and is related to morphological traits of constituent species. The predictive power of ecomorphological correlates with diets of fish species other than mugilids which are attracted to brush parks, can therefore be considered as a useful tool for conducting rapid ecological assessment.  相似文献

Rough scad Trachurus lathami is a key pelagic fish in the Argentinean continental shelf (ACS, south-west Atlantic Ocean), with recent increases in abundance. It is a main prey of fishes and marine mammals, and shares the environment with commercially relevant pelagic species (Engraulis anchoita and Scomber colias), playing an important role linking lower and upper trophic levels in the ecosystem. This study aims to determine the ontogenetic changes in the diet composition, feeding strategy, trophic niche breadth and trophic level of T. lathami in the North Patagonian Shelf (43°–45°30′S). The stomach contents of adult fish (n = 238) were analysed. The results suggest a clear ontogenetic shift in the diet at a size of ~190 mm. Smaller individuals (160–190 mm) were specialized on misidaceans, and showed the highest trophic level, while larger T. lathami (221–230 mm) consumed decapods (Peisos petrunkevitchi) and teleosts (eggs and larvae). Trophic niche breadth was higher at the medium-sized class (191–220 mm), which mainly preyed on copepods (Calanoides carinatus) and chaetognaths (Sagitta spp.), evidencing a more diverse diet and a rather generalist strategy. Updated information on the trophic ecology of T. lathami evidences its extremely plastic feeding behaviour, being able to adapt its trophic niche to the most readily available food items from the mesopelagic community.  相似文献

Parasites that are transmitted through predator–prey interactions may be used as indicators of trophic relationships between organisms. Yet, they are rarely used as such in the construction of topological (predator–prey) food webs. We constructed food webs of vertebrate trophic interactions using observed diet alone, trophically transmitted parasites alone, and the combination of the two based on data from 31 species of fish from the Bothnian Bay, Finland. The fish food web contained 530 links derived from observed diet, 724 links inferred from parasitism, and 1,058 links calculated from a combination of both stomach contents and parasites. This sub-web constructed from stomach contents had a mean of 17.1 links per fish species, while that using parasites had 23.4 links per fish. Combining the two diet indicators yielded 34.1 links per fish species, illustrating the complementarity of the two methods. Mean number of prey species per fish species was 12.5 using observed diet items, 15.8 using parasites, and 24.5 using both measures together. Mean number of predators per fish species was 7.4 using observed diet, 11.7 using parasites and 15.0 using both. A positive correlation was found between the mean number of parasites and the number of prey taxa in the diet among the fishes. Omnivorous fish had the highest diversity of both parasite species and prey items, while benthophagous fish had among the lowest. Mean total abundance and mean total prevalence of parasites correlated positively with fish size, with piscivores being the largest with the highest abundance and prevalence, while planktivores and benthivores had the lowest. Trophically transmitted parasites may be used to help construct vertebrate sub-webs and derive information about food web processes. Parasites alone provided equivalent if not more information than observed diet. However, resolution is improved by using parasites and observed diet together.  相似文献

An organism''s body size plays an important role in ecological interactions such as predator–prey relationships. As predators are typically larger than their prey, this often leads to a strong positive relationship between body size and trophic position in aquatic ecosystems. The distribution of body sizes in a community can thus be an indicator of the strengths of predator–prey interactions. The aim of this study was to gain more insight into the relationship between fish body size distribution and trophic position in a wide range of European lakes. We used quantile regression to examine the relationship between fish species'' trophic position and their log‐transformed maximum body mass for 48 fish species found in 235 European lakes. Subsequently, we examined whether the slopes of the continuous community size distributions, estimated by maximum likelihood, were predicted by trophic position, predator–prey mass ratio (PPMR), or abundance (number per unit effort) of fish communities in these lakes. We found a positive linear relationship between species'' maximum body mass and average trophic position in fishes only for the 75% quantile, contrasting our expectation that species'' trophic position systematically increases with maximum body mass for fish species in European lakes. Consequently, the size spectrum slope was not related to the average community trophic position, but there were negative effects of community PPMR and total fish abundance on the size spectrum slope. We conclude that predator–prey interactions likely do not contribute strongly to shaping community size distributions in these lakes.  相似文献

Despite the growing evidence for individual variation in trophic niche within populations, its potential indirect effects on ecosystem processes remains poorly understood. In particular, few studies have investigated how intraspecific trophic variability can modulate the effects of consumers on ecosystems through potential changes in nutrient excretion rates. Here, we first quantified the level of intraspecific trophic variability in 11 wild populations of the omnivorous fish Lepomis gibbosus. Outputs from stomach content and stable isotope analyses revealed that the degree of trophic specialization and trophic positions were highly variable between and within these wild populations. There was intrapopulation variation in trophic position of more than one trophic level, suggesting that individuals consumed a range of plant and animal resources. We then experimentally manipulated intraspecific trophic variability to assess how it can modulate consumer‐mediated nutrient effects on relevant processes of ecosystem functioning. Specifically, three food sources varying in nutrient quality (e.g. plant material, macro‐invertebrate and fish meat) were used individually or in combination to simulate seven diet treatments. Results indicated that intraspecific variability in growth and nitrogen excretion rates were more related to the composition of the diet rather than the degree of specialization, and increased with the trophic position of the diet consumed. We subsequently used microcosms and showed that critical ecosystem functions, such as primary production and community respiration, were affected by the variability in excretory products, and this effect was biomass‐dependent. These results highlight the importance of considering variation within species to better assess the effects of individuals on ecosystems and, more specifically, the effects of consumer‐mediated nutrient recycling because the body size and the trophic ecology of individuals are affected by a large spectrum of natural and human‐induced environmental changes.  相似文献

This article examines the trophic ecology of freshwater fishes (22 species in 15 families) in a wet and dry tropical Australian river of high intra‐annual and interannual hydrological variability. Seven major trophic groups were identified by cluster analysis; however, four food items (filamentous algae, chironomid larvae, Trichoptera larvae and Ephemeroptera nymphs) comprised almost half of the average diet of all species. The influence of species, fish size, spatial effects and temporal effects on food use was investigated using redundancy analysis. Size, time and space accounted for little of the perceived variation. Ontogenetic changes in diet were minor and limited to a few large species. Spatial variation in trophic composition of the fish assemblages reflected the effects of the Burdekin Falls and dam, a major geographic barrier, on species distributions. Little spatial variation in diet was detected after accounting for this biogeographical effect. Temporal variations in flow, although marked, had little effect on variations in fish diet composition due to the low temporal diversity of food resources in physically monotonous sand and gravel channels. Species identity accounted for<50% of the observed variation in food choice; omnivory and generalism were pronounced. The aquatic food web of the Burdekin River appears simple, supported largely by autochthonous production (filamentous and benthic microalgae, and to some extent, aquatic macrophytes). Allochthonous food resources appear to be unimportant. The generalist feeding strategies, widespread omnivory and absence of pronounced trophic segregation reported here for Burdekin River fishes may be common to variable and intermittent rivers of subtropical and tropical northern Australia with similar fish communities and may be a general feature of rivers of low habitat diversity and characterized by flow regimes that vary greatly both within and between years.  相似文献

Recent studies of aquatic food webs show that parasite diversity is concentrated in nodes that likely favour transmission. Various aspects of parasite diversity have been observed to be correlated with the trophic level, size, diet breadth, and vulnerability to predation of hosts. However, no study has attempted to distinguish among all four correlates, which may have differential importance for trophically transmitted parasites occurring as larvae or adults. We searched for factors that best predict the diversity of larval and adult endoparasites in 4105 fish in 25 species studied over a three-year period in the Bothnian Bay, Finland. Local predator–prey relationships were determined from stomach contents, parasites, and published data in 8,229 fish in 31 species and in seals and piscivorous birds. Fish that consumed more species of prey had more diverse trophically transmitted adult parasites. Larval parasite diversity increased with the diversity of both prey and predators, but increases in predator diversity had a greater effect. Prey diversity was more strongly associated with the diversity of adult parasites than with that of larvae. The proportion of parasite species present as larvae in a host species was correlated with the diversity of its predators. There was a notable lack of association with the diversity of any parasite guild and fish length, trophic level, or trophic category. Thus, diversity is associated with different nodal properties in larval and adult parasites, and association strengths also differ, strongly reflecting the life cycles of parasites and the food chains they follow to complete transmission.  相似文献

Food chain theory provides explicit predictions for equilibrium biomasses among trophic levels in food chains of different lengths. Empirical studies on freshwater benthic food chains have typically been performed on chains with up to three levels and in field experiments with limited spatial and temporal scale. Here we use a natural snapshot experiment approach to study equilibrium biomass and abundance among trophic levels in natural ponds differing only with respect to fish assemblage structure. Forty-four ponds were surveyed for their densityand biomass of fish, snails and periphyton. Ponds were divided into three categories based on fish assemblage: ponds with no fish (two trophic levels), ponds with molluscivorous fish (three trophic levels) and ponds that also had piscivorous fish (four trophic levels). Ponds without fish had a high density and biomass of snails and a low biomass of periphyton, whereas snails were scarce and periphyton biomass was high in ponds with molluscivorous fish. In the presence of piscivores, molluscivore populations consisted of low numbers of large individuals. Snail assemblages in piscivore ponds were characterised by relativelyhigh densities of small-bodied detritivorous species and periphyton biomass was not significantlydifferent from ponds with three trophic levels. Thus, predictions from classic food chain theory were upheld in ponds with up to three trophic levels. In ponds with four trophic levels, however, there was a decoupling of the trophic cascade at the piscivore-molluscivore level. Gape-limited piscivory, predation on snails by molluscivores that have reached an absolute size refuge from predation, and changes in food preferences of the dominant snails are suggested to explain the observed patterns.  相似文献
