The time between infection and the onset of reproduction (maturation time) is a key determinant of body size, fecundity and generation time in parasitic nematodes. An optimality model for maturation time is developed centred on prematurational growth, the duration of which has opposing consequences for fecundity and for survival to reproductive age. The maturation time favoured by natural selection is found to be inversely proportional to prematurational mortality rate. The product of maturation time and mortality rate is predicted to be an invariant number equal to the allometric slope linking daily fecundity to maturation time. Predictions are tested using comparative data on mammalian gastrointestinal nematode taxa. Half the cross-species variation in prepatent period (the time from infection until propagules are shed from the host) is accounted for by this adaptive trade-off hypothesis, even though many biological details are not explicitly modelled. These results are discussed in the light of previous studies and in the context of general models of life history evolution. 相似文献

Fifteen economically important plant species were tested for their suitability to commonly occurring plant parasitic nematodes viz, Hoplolaimus indicus, Helicotylenchus indicus, Tylenchus filiformis, Rotylenchulus reniformis, Tylenchorhynchus brassicae, Pratylenchus zeae and Meloidogyne incognita. The plants reacted differently to different nematodes. Moreover, eight fruit trees/plants were also tested for their suitability to nematodes. 相似文献

While ageing is commonly associated with exponential increase in mortality with age, mortality rates paradoxically decelerate late in life resulting in distinct mortality plateaus. Late-life mortality plateaus have been discovered in a broad variety of taxa, including humans, but their origin is hotly debated. One hypothesis argues that deceleration occurs because the individual probability of death stops increasing at very old ages, predicting the evolution of earlier onset of mortality plateaus under increased rate of extrinsic mortality. By contrast, heterogeneity theory suggests that mortality deceleration arises from individual differences in intrinsic lifelong robustness and predicts that variation in robustness between populations will result in differences in mortality deceleration. We used experimental evolution to directly test these predictions by independently manipulating extrinsic mortality rate (high or low) and mortality source (random death or condition-dependent) to create replicate populations of nematodes, Caenorhabditis remanei that differ in the strength of selection in late-life and in the level of lifelong robustness. Late-life mortality deceleration evolved in response to differences in mortality source when mortality rate was held constant, while there was no consistent response to differences in mortality rate. These results provide direct experimental support for the heterogeneity theory of late-life mortality deceleration. 相似文献

Six cultivars of banana grown widely in Malappuram district of Kerala were evaluated for the diversity of plant parasitic nematodes in their respective rhizosphere. The genotypes evaluated include Nendran, Poovan (Mysore), Njali poovan, Mysore poovan, Chenkadali and Ponnan. The study aims on a comparative analysis of rhizosphere of different banana varieties for the occurrence of plant parasitic nematodes, diversity, frequency of occurrence and to determine the most vulnerable type of banana variety. Cobb’s decanting and sieving method was used to isolate nematodes from soil. Thirty three samples randomly collected from different blocks of Malappuram district are subjected to analysis and a ten species of nematodes were reported. Among the six varieties analysed both Nendran and Mysore Poovan variety seems to be more susceptible to phytoparasitic nematodes. With respect to eight blocks of Malappuram district, Helicotylenchus sp. shows highest prominence value followed by Radopholus similis, reniform nematode and Meloidogyne incognita. 相似文献

Many animal species across different taxa change their habitat during their development. An ontogenetic habitat shift enables the development of early vulnerable-to-predation stages in a safe “nursery” habitat with reduced predation mortality, whereas less vulnerable stages can exploit a more risky, rich feeding habitat. Therefore, the timing of the habitat shift is crucial for individual fitness. We investigate the effect that size selectivity in mortality in the rich feeding habitat has on the optimal body size at which to shift between habitats using a population model that incorporates density dependence. We show that when mortality risk is more size dependent, it is optimal to switch to the risky habitat at a smaller rather than larger body size, despite that individuals can avoid mortality by staying longer in the nursery habitat and growing to safety in size. When size selectivity in mortality is high, large reproducing individuals are abundant and produce numerous offspring that strongly compete in the nursery habitat. A smaller body size at habitat shift is therefore favored because strong competition reduces growth potential. Our results reveal the interdependence among population structure, density dependence, and life history traits, and highlight the need for integrating ecological feedbacks in the study of life history evolution. 相似文献

Parasitism changes the host environment and may influence resource allocation between reproductive effort and somatic maintenance. We characterized the impact of dose-dependent schistosome exposure and/or infection establishment on intermediate host survival and reproduction. Four matched groups of Biomphalaria glabrata snails were individually exposed to increasing doses of Schistosoma mansoni parasites, with a fifth control group remaining unexposed. Increased mortality was observed amongst both snails infected and also those snails exposed to the parasite but within which infection did not establish, although only exposed but uninfected snails showed a dose-dependent increase in mortality. Snails also facultatively altered their reproductive output in response to parasite exposure: egg mass production decreased with increasing parasite dose in patently infected snails, whilst, in contrast, exposed but uninfected snails demonstrated a positive association between egg mass production and parasite dose in the post-patent period. These results uniquely suggest an exposure-dose-dependent post-patent fecundity compensation occurring in relation to the risk of future parasite-associated mortality. 相似文献

- The functional response to, and preference for, the host density in a parasite were examined experimentally using an icheumon wasp, Exidechthis canescens, and its host Cadra cautella under controlled conditions.
- Wasps were more active in host-searching at higher than lower host densities. Percent parasitism increased rapidly with initial increments in host density and then tended to increase more slowly at higher host densities. A sigmoid functional response curve is indicated, which implies that the parasite is able to control its host even at low densities.
- Wasps actively selected areas of high host density in which to concentrate host-searching behavior.
- Host-searching by E. canescens is stimulated by the odor of the host when present, and by food in which hosts have developed but have been removed.
- Both the functional response and the host-density preference of the parasite are mediated by its host-searching behavior. This relationship is discussed in the context of population regulation.

Using field surveys and experimental infections, we investigated the influence of a trematode parasite on life history traits
of adult Lymnaea elodes snails. We found that parasitism significantly affected the growth, fecundity, and survival of host snails. Within five of
the six natural L. elodes populations we sampled, shell length of echinostome-infected hosts was significantly greater than for uninfected conspecifics.
Furthermore, we show that gigantism occurs among experimentally infected snails due to an accelerated growth rate and size-selective
mortality following an Echinostoma revolutum infection. The fecundity of infected snails sharply decreased beginning at 3 weeks post exposure (PE) and all egg production
eventually ceased for most hosts by 5–6 weeks PE. Energy constraints, imposed by parasite development, alter the host energy
budget. Early in the infection, parasite depletion of host energy reserves reduces host reproduction, but sufficient resources
remain to allow accelerated host growth. Mortality was increased among host snails at two distinct stages: shortly after exposure
and several weeks after cercariae were first released. We did not observe tissue degradation in snails during the first 4
weeks after exposure to the parasite, but destruction of host tissues was noted among snails dying later in the infection.

The evolution of reproductive strategies in dasyurid marsupials: implications of molecular phylogeny 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Dasyurid marsupials show a remarkable diversity of reproductive patterns ranging from aseasonal polyoestry to restricted annual breeding in which males synchronously die after a brief mating season. Previous studies have categorized dasyurid reproduction into six strategies, defined on the basis of five life-history characters. We provide an up-to-date summary of reproductive traits in dasyurid species and examine the evolution of these characters on a phylogeny for the family recently obtained from DNA sequence data. Our results suggest that reproductive evolution in modern dasyurids is characterized by a basal separation of subfamily lineages employing Strategy II (monoestrous females, restricted breeding season, 11 months to maturity; Dasyurinae) and Strategy V (polyoestrous females, extended breeding season, 8–11 months to maturity; Sminthopsinae). Strategies I (male die-off) and III (facultative polyoestry) appear to have arisen several times from Strategy II or V ancestors, and Strategy IV appears to have arisen within Sminthopsis from a Strategy V ancestor. Strategy VI (aseasonal breeding) has arisen independently in each of the four major dasyurid lineages (tribes), and is highly (but not perfectly) correlated with New Guinean endemism. This scenario is not strongly affected if reproductive characters are optimized on an alternative phylogeny more consistent with morphology-based opinions on species relationships. When evaluated in light of current habitat associations and geographic distributions, the reproductive data suggest that the Miocene diversification of modern dasyurids may have been correlated with the invasion of dry forest or woodland habitats. 相似文献

Grayling Thymallus thymallus in Lake Aursjøen, Norway, showed a remarkably uniform growth pattern throughout life, whereas brown trout Salmo trutta showed far more variation. In addition, a narrower age-length interval of maturation was found in grayling. The restricted life history variation in grayling is discussed and it is suggested that all grayling of Lake Aursjøen experience similar environmental conditions as juveniles, which induces low phenotypic variation. In contrast the existence of several spawning populations, adapted to as many as 28 different tributaries, may have created large life history variation in Aursjøen trout. Logistic models revealed that both age and length had significant, simultaneous effects on the maturation of both species. Furthermore, the sexes of trout differed in maturation patterns, i.e. males matured earlier and at smaller sizes than female conspecifics, but no difference was found between the sexes of grayling. In addition, larger sex-specific growth differences were found in trout. An absence of early maturing males in grayling and their presence in trout is discussed as a possible explanation of the restricted life history variation found between sexes of grayling. Male grayling experienced a larger mortality rate than did females, whereas no such differences were found in trout. It is suggested that grayling males invest more in reproduction than do females, due primarily to large investments in breeding behaviour. The equal mortality rates found for both sexes of trout, albeit males starting to spawn earlier than females, is probably explained by a female-selective fishing mortality. 相似文献

Effects of temperature on life history variables in perch 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Population structure, recruitment, mortality, life expectancy, age at maturity, gonad development, fecundity, net reproductive rate and energy storage were studied in a perch population exposed to thermal discharge. The experiment was conducted during 1978–1990 in an artificial enclosure at a nuclear power plant on the Baltic Sea coast. Abundance increased after the plant started operating, although the proportion of larger perch dropped to a low level. Recruitment improved, but adult mortality increased. This effect was accentuated as the fishes matured very early and at a very small size, reducing their ability to support a growing gonad in high winter temperatures. During the spawning period, condition dropped to very low levels accompanied by increased mortality. Surviving fish delayed the next spawning by one or more years and reduced their fecundity. Body condition thus improved in large perch at the end of the study period. Life-time fecundity was reduced, and reproductive performance shifted to youner ages. 相似文献

Previous studies have shown that avian growth and development covary with juvenile mortality. Juveniles of birds under strong nest predation pressure grow rapidly, have short incubation and nestling periods, and leave the nest at low body mass. Life-history theory predicts that parental investment increases with adult mortality rate. Thus, developmental traits that depend on the parental effort exerted (pre- and postnatal growth rate) should scale positively with adult mortality, in contrast to those that do not have a direct relationship with parental investment (timing of developmental events, e.g. nest leaving). I tested this prediction on a sample of 84 North American songbirds. Nestling growth rate scaled positively and incubation period duration negatively with annual adult mortality rates even when controlled for nest predation and other covariates, including phylogeny. On the contrary, neither the duration of the nestling period nor body mass at fledging showed any relationship. Proximate mechanisms generating the relationship of pre- and postnatal growth rates to adult mortality may include increased feeding, nest attentiveness during incubation and/or allocation of hormones, and deserve further attention. 相似文献

The protein concentrations of fat body and ovaries in Ips sexdentatus either uninfected or infected by Parasitaphelenchus sp., P. sexdentati, or Contortylenchus diplogaster were measured at various stages of insect development, from preswarming maturation to the first oviposition (24 hr after mating). Weight variations of the fat body and ovaries in insects infected by C. diplogaster show the same evolution as those observed in uninfected insects, but at a much lower level. Fat body proteins in uninfected insects reach their minimum level during swarming, but they remain fairly constant throughout the maturation of the first egg. After dropping shortly after swarming, the ovarian protein level in such insects increases in two stages during ovarian maturation. The first stage, which corresponds to a slow protein incorporation, takes place during the first 12 hr after mating. During the second stage, i.e., beyond 12 hr, a significant level of proteins is rapidly incorporated into the ovaries. In insects infected by Parasitaphelenchus fat body proteins are reduced and protein incorporation into the ovaries is reduced; Parasitaphelenchus would thus affect at least some proteins required for ovarian maturation in their host. Fat body protein levels are even more affected by C. diplogaster than by Parasitaphelenchus, while incorporation into ovaries seems to be less affected in spite of slower ovarian growth. C. diplogaster might thus essentially act both upon proteins which are not required for the ovarian maturation of their host and upon nonproteinaceous substances that are required for such maturation. Results are discussed in relation to the possible mode of action of parasitic nematodes. 相似文献

If a female survives an infection, she can transfer antibodies against that particular pathogen to any future offspring she produces. The resulting protection of offspring for a period after their birth is termed maternal immunity. Because infection in newborns is associated with high mortality, the duration of this protection is expected to be under strong selection. Evolutionary modelling structured around a trade‐off between fertility and duration of maternal immunity has indicated selection for longer duration of maternal immunity for hosts with longer lifespans. Here, we use a new modelling framework to extend this analysis to consider characteristics of pathogens (and hosts) in further detail. Importantly, given the challenges in characterizing trade‐offs linked to immune function empirically, our model makes no assumptions about costs of longer lasting maternal immunity. Rather, a key component of this analysis is variation in mortality over age. We found that the optimal duration of maternal immunity is shaped by the shifting balance of the burden of infection between young and old individuals. As age of infection depends on characteristics of both the host and the pathogen, both affect the evolution of duration of maternal immunity. Our analysis provides additional support for selection for longer duration of maternal immunity in long‐lived hosts, even in the absence of explicit costs linked to duration of maternal immunity. Further, the scope of our results provides explanations for exceptions to the general correlation between duration of maternal immunity and lifespan, as we found that both pathogen characteristics and trans‐generational effects can lead to important shifts in fitness linked to maternal immunity. Finally, our analysis points to new directions for quantifying the trade‐offs that drive the development of the immune system. 相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Field and laboratory investigations were combined in a 2‐year study on the initiation of a midsummer decline of Daphnia galeata Sars in a hypertrophic reservoir. Quantitative field samples were taken twice a week, and, adult and juvenile mortality rates were calculated. Patterns of reproduction and survival of daphnids born during spring and early summer under fluctuating food conditions were determined in life‐table experiments. 2. The abundance of Daphnia increased strongly in early May and declined in June 1998 (midsummer decline). In 1999, Daphnia density increased only slowly in spring and remained constantly high throughout the summer. 3. Food conditions (concentrations of POC<30 μm) for daphnids deteriorated in both years in response to increasing Daphnia densities, resulting in a clear‐water phase of about 4 weeks. When Daphnia abundance declined in 1998, POC<30 μm concentrations increased greatly, whereas in 1999 food conditions improved only slightly and Secchi depth remained high. 4. Survival of daphnids in life‐table experiments decreased greatly after food became rare and was strongly reduced in those animals born during the clear‐water phase compared with those born later. In addition, age at first reproduction was retarded during the clear‐water phase, resulting in very low population growth rates. Survivorship patterns in life‐table experiments suggest a strong impact of non‐consumptive mortality on Daphnia population dynamics. 5. Field data of mortality point to differences in mortality patterns between years, probably resulting from different predation impacts of juvenile fish. In both years, however, adult mortality contributed substantially to overall mortality at the end of the clear‐water phase. As bottom‐up effects on D. galeata were very similar in both years, the significance of non‐consumptive mortality on the initiation of midsummer declines appears to depend largely on recruitment patterns before the clear‐water phase. A high impact can be expected when Daphnia populations are dominated by a peak cohort of nearly identical age during the clear‐water phase. 相似文献

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is one of the principal pests of apiculture in the Pampas region of Argentina. As adults they prey on honey bees and other insects, while as larvae they are solitary ectoparasitoids of third instar scarab beetle larvae. Females of M. ruficauda lay eggs away from the host in tall grasses. After being dispersed by the wind, larvae drop to the ground, where they dig in search of their hosts. It is known that second instar larvae of M. ruficauda exhibit active host searching behaviour towards its preferred host, third instar larva of Cyclocephala signaticollis. Although the means by which host location occurs has been studied and since superparasitism is a frequent scenario in the field, no information about host discrimination and host acceptance is available. We carried out studies in the field and behavioural experiments in the laboratory to determine if M. ruficauda is capable of quality host discrimination. We also studied if this parasitoid is capable of conspecific detection in order to avoid superparasitism. Finally, we analyzed the conditions under which superparasitism occurs in the field. We report here that the second instar larva of M. ruficauda is able to discriminate the parasitism status of the host by means of chemical cues, but is not capable of detecting conspecifics prior to attacking a host. We also found that the host cannot detect the presence of the parasitoid by means of chemical cues, so that no counter-defense against parasitism occurs. Furthermore, we determined that superparasitism occurs on the heavier hosts, i.e. those with more abundant resources which could harbor several parasitoid individuals. Finally, we discuss the possible implications of larval host location and host discrimination decisions on the fitness of this parasitoid. 相似文献

Most members of the nonphotosynthetic parasitic genera Orobanche and Phelipanche (Orobanchaceae) have narrow host ranges, and, as they grow on perennial hosts, are (at least potentially) perennial themselves. A few species, however, have wide host ranges and grow on annual hosts, and are thus (at least facultatively) annuals themselves. Among the latter are the weedy species, which include economically important pest taxa such as Orobanche crenata or Phelipanche aegyptiaca. Using a phylogenetically based maximum likelihood approach, which takes phylogenetic and branch length uncertainty into account, we can show that the life trait host range and life history evolve in a correlated fashion. This supports the hypothesis that parasite specialization is associated with predictable resources (i.e. long-lived hosts) and generalism with unpredictable ones (i.e. short-lived hosts), a pattern often found in animal parasites. The mechanisms and temporal sequence of the life trait changes and their interrelations remain speculative. 相似文献
