The importance of litter to nutrient and organic matter storage and the possible influence of species selection on soil fertility in ten stands each consisting of a separate tree species were examined in this study. The plantations had been grown under similar conditions in an arboretum in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. The species involved were: Anthocephalus chinensis, Eucalyptus × patentinervis, E. saligna, Hernandia sonora, Hibiscus elatus, Khaya nyasica, Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis, P. elliottii var. densa, Swietenia macrophylla, and Terminalia ivorensis. After 26 yr, litter mass ranged from 5 mg ha-1 in the H. sonora stand to 27.2 Mg ha-1 in the P. caribaea stand. Nutrients in the litter (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) also varied widely, but stands were ranked in different order when ranked by nutrients in the litter than then ranked according to accumulation of mass. Only E. saligna and A. chinensis stands were ranked similarly in accumulation of both nutrients and mass, and the stand of H. elatus was ranked higher with respect to nutrient accumulation than to accumulation of mass. The nutrient concentration in standing leaf litter generally increased in the order of recently fallen <old intact< fragmented. Nutrient concentration of standing leaf litter appears to increase with age and depth in the litter layer. The amount of nutrients stored in the litter compartment of these plantations was in the same order of magnitude as the quantity of available nutrients in the top 10-cm of mineral soil. Total litter mass was negatively correlated with the mass-weighted concentration of N, K, and Mg. The same relationship was found for Ca in the leaf litter and N in the fine wood litter compartments. In some stands (notably P. caribaea, P. elliottii, and E. saligna), leaf litter derived from species other than the species planted in that particular stand had higher nutrient concentration than leaf litter from the planted species. Soils of the 10 stands were classified in the same soil series and had similar texture (clay soils). However, significantly different chemical characteristics were found. Results obtained by analysis of covariance and by limiting comparisons to adjacent stands with similar soil texture, indicate that different species have had different influences on the concentration of available nutrients in soil.  相似文献

为探讨巨桉连栽对土壤微生物生物量和数量的影响,采用时空互换法,研究了马尾松(Pinus massoniana)林和不同连栽代次的巨桉(Eucalyptus grandis)人工林的微生物生物量、数量与土壤理化性质的关系。结果表明,巨桉一代林的土壤微生物生物量碳、生物量氮和土壤真菌、细菌数量与马尾松林的差异不显著,放线菌数量则显著增加。随巨桉连栽代次增加,土壤微生物生物量碳、生物量氮和土壤细菌、放线菌、真菌数量均递减。回归分析表明,土壤全磷能独立解释微生物生物量氮、细菌和真菌数量71.7%、86.1%和63.0%的变异,与总孔隙度共同解释微生物生物量碳87.9%的变异,与全氮共同解释放线菌数量89.6%的变异。可见,土壤全磷较大程度解释了微生物的变化。  相似文献

在前期巨桉(E.grandis)人工林土壤生物多样性在轮伐期前(4年左右)降低,此后随林龄显著升高的研究基础上,在四川省丹棱县选择轮伐期前即4年和轮伐期后即8年的不同密度(D1:2000, D2:1600, D3:1200株/hm~2)巨桉人工林,研究了其土壤动物群落结构特征。结果显示:1)共捕获土壤动物2904只,隶属于4门8纲22目70科,其中大型土壤动物541只,以蚁科和康叭科为优势类群;中小型土壤动物2363只,以大翼甲螨科、等节虫兆科和线虫为优势类群。2)土壤动物类群数、个体数和密度随林分密度和林龄具有显著差异,4年生林地大型土壤动物个体数随密度降低显著增加,8年生巨桉人工林中小型土壤动物个体数及类群数随密度降低均显著增加;土壤动物个体数及类群数除D1密度时4年高于8年,其余密度均表现为8年高于4年。3)林分密度对土壤动物多样性指数有显著影响,4年生林地大型土壤动物Margalef丰富度指数随密度降低显著增加,8年巨桉人工林中小型土壤动物Shannon-wiener指数及Margalef丰富度指数随密度降低显著升高。4)巨桉人工林大型土壤动物以杂食性为主,枯食性次之,中小型土壤动物以腐食性为主,杂食性次之。5)RDA分析显示,林分密度、土壤含水量和土壤pH为对土壤动物的主要作用环境因子,4年时对奥甲螨科、长角长虫兆科、寄螨科、隐翅甲科、丽甲螨科等类群影响较大;8年时对线虫、蜚蠊科、康叭科、厉螨科、棘虫兆科等类群影响较大。为此,延长轮伐期、降低林分密度可改善巨桉人工林土壤动物生境、增加土壤动物多样性、促进土壤动物群落结构稳定性。  相似文献

Recognition of genetic structure of populations and the ability to identify vulnerable populations is useful for the formation of conservation management strategies for plants. Eucalyptus grandis is a tall forest tree that has a major area of occurrence in subtropical eastern Australia, with smaller populations located in the east coast tropics. Many widespread forest species exhibit population differentiation that corresponds to geographic regions. However, Eucalyptus grandis appears to be an exception based on isozyme and morphological data. This is intriguing given a large discontinuity between northern populations and those in the southern part of the species range. In this study, the distribution of a maternally inherited chloroplast locus was examined because it was more likely to reveal genetic structure due to the slower evolution of the chloroplast genome and limited dispersal of seed in eucalypts. As expected, the G ST for chloroplast DNA was higher than that for nuclear DNA but indicated low population differentiation for a forest tree species. Phylogeographic analysis indicated that the 15 populations grouped into three broad geographical regions; however, overall population structure was weak suggesting that the large geographical disjunction in the distribution of E. grandis may be relatively recent. A paradigm for conservation management of E. grandis based on chloroplast DNA haplotype distribution would take into account the low differentiation among populations.  相似文献

为正确认识桉树(Eucalyptus spp.)人工林凋落物和土壤C、N、P时空分配格局及两者间的关系,对5个林龄尾巨桉林分凋落物及土壤C、N、P含量及化学计量比进行测定分析。结果表明,凋落物的C含量均显著大于土壤,且不同林龄间凋落物C含量无显著差异,1年生人工林土壤表层(0~20 cm)的C含量显著小于3~7年生,其他土层C含量在不同林龄间差异不显著。凋落物的N含量均显著高于土壤,且1年生人工林显著大于其他林龄的,而土壤表层的N含量以7年生人工林最大,1年生的最小。凋落物的P含量除1年生人工林显著大于3年生外,其他林龄间均无显著差异,土壤的P含量在不同林龄间的差异均不显著。凋落物C∶N随林龄呈逐渐增大趋势,且显著大于土壤层。凋落物的C∶P和N∶P在不同林龄间的差异不显著,但均显著大于土壤层。凋落物的N含量与表层土壤的C、N含量呈极显著负相关,凋落物的C∶N与表层土壤的C∶P,N∶P呈显著正相关,表层土壤C、N积累受到凋落物N的制约。因此,在桉树人工林经营管理过程中如何降低凋落物分解的N限制性、提高养分传递效率及合理施肥显得十分重要。  相似文献

Seedlings of Eucalyptus regnans (mountain ash) grow poorly in undried forest soil, where they develop purple coloration in the foliage, but their growth is markedly improved when forest soil has been air dried. Whether this growth promotion is purely due to improved nutrient status of the soil, as a result of air drying, was investigated. In several pot experiments, E. regnans seedlings were grown (i) in air-dried and undried forest soil with addition of different levels of complete fertiliser, (ii) in air-dried or undried soil diluted to different extents with sand, or (iii) in undried soil mixed with different amounts of air-dried soil. Seedling dry weight, P content and incidence of ectomycorrhizal root tips were determined.In all experiments, the dry weights of seedlings were 3–6 times greater in 100% air-dried soil than in 100% undried soil. Fertiliser application resulted in a significant increase in dry weight of seedlings in both air-dried and undried soil, but the dry weights in air-dried soil were always significantly greater than those in undried soil at the same level of fertiliser application. Even at the highest level of fertiliser application, the growth difference between seedlings in air-dried and undried soil remained. When air-dried soil was diluted with sand, there was a significant reduction in seedling dry weight only when soil was diluted to 20% or less (air-dried soil:total mix). Conversly, when air-dried soil was mixed with undried soil, there was a proportional decrease in seedling dry weight with increasing amounts of undried soil. In all experiments, the dominant ectomycorrhizal morphotypes in 100% air-dried soil were different from those in undried soil. Fertilisation and dilution of air-dried and undried soil did not result in a reduction in the overall incidence of ectomycorrhizal root tips, although the frequency of occurrence of different ectomycorrhizal morphotypes was affected.It is concluded that the growth difference between seedlings in air-dried and undried forest soils is not due solely to differences in the direct availability of nutrients in the soils, and different ectomycorrhizae may indirectly affect nutrient availability to the plant.  相似文献

为揭示固氮树种土壤养分转化的酶学机制,对固氮树种[厚荚相思(Acacia crassicarpa)、黑木相思(A. melanoxylon)、卷荚相思(A.cincinnata)、大叶相思(A.auriculiformis)和马占相思(A.mangium)]及非固氮树种尾巨桉(Eucalyptusurophylla×E.grandis)人工林的土壤养分含量、酶活性及其相关性进行研究。结果表明,相思林40~60cm土层的pH均高于尾巨桉林;5种相思林土壤各土层的TP、TK含量均低于尾巨桉林,而20~40 cm土层的TC、TN含量均高于尾巨桉林,黑木相思林和马占相思林各土层的有效养分均显著高于尾巨桉林(P0.05)。0~10 cm土层中,相思林的土壤酸性磷酸酶和纤维素酶活性均高于尾巨桉林,大叶相思林的土壤脲酶、蔗糖酶、纤维素酶和芳基硫酸酯酶活性显著高于尾巨桉林(P0.05),卷荚相思林的土壤脲酶、纤维素酶、几丁质酶和淀粉酶活性显著高于尾巨桉林(P0.05)。相关分析结果表明,土壤脲酶、蔗糖酶和几丁质酶活性与AP显著负相关(P0.05),蔗糖酶和纤维素酶活性与NH4+-N显著负相关(P 0.05),脲酶、纤维素酶、芳基硫酸酯酶与土壤TK显著负相关(P0.05),几丁质酶活性与TN含量呈显著正相关(P0.05),土壤淀粉酶活性与NH4+-N呈显著正相关(P 0.05),过氧化氢酶活性与土壤TK含量呈显著正相关。可见,与尾巨桉人工林相比,在我国南方退化山地引种相思树可提高土壤关键酶的活性,对土壤有效养分具有明显改良作用,有利于退化地土壤的生态修复及人工林长期生产力的维持。  相似文献

Litter decomposition and nitrogen mineralization were investigated in subtropical plantation forests in southern China. The CO2 –C release from incubated litter and the forest floor of Acacia mangium, Acacia auriculaeformis, Eucalyptus citriodora, Pinus elliotii and Schima superba stands were used to estimate relative rates of litter decomposition. Decomposition was not positively correlated with litter nitrogen. E. citridora litter decomposed most rapidly and A. mangium litter most slowly, both with and without the addition of exotic nitrogen. Aerobic incubation and intact soil core incubation at 30 °C over a period of 30 days were used to assess nitrogen mineralization of six forest soils. Although there were differences in results obtained using the two methods, patterns between legume and non-legume species were the same regardless of method. All soils had pH values below 4.5, but this did not prevent nitrification. The dominant form of mineral nitrogen was nitrate for legume species and ammonium for non-legume species. The nitrogen mineralization potential was highest for soils in which legumes were growing.  相似文献

Eucalyptus L'Héritier (Myrtaceae: Leptospermoideae) species are native to the Austro-Malaysian region, but have been widely planted in temperate and subtropical regions around the world. In most regions whereEucalyptus have been imported, the Eucalyptus Longhorned Borer (Phoracantha semipunctata F.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) has been accidently introduced. Larvae of the beetle bore through the bark and mine along the cambium of stressed trees, usually killing their host. We report here the relative susceptibilities of 12Eucalyptus species in two mixed-species plantations in California, USA. These trees were stressed by water deficit resulting from a prolonged drought.Eucalyptus species that appeared resistant to the borer includedE. camaldulensis Dehnhardt,E. cladocalyx F. Muller,e. sideroxylon A. Cunn. ex Woolls, andE. trabutii (anE. camaldulensis hybrid). Species that were more susceptible to attack wereE. diversicolor F. Mueller,E. globulus LaBillardière,E. grandis Hill ex Maiden,E. nitens (Deane & Maiden),E. saligna Sm., andE. viminalis LaBillardière. Survival of trees was influenced by fine-scale moisture variation resulting from slope and irrigation effects. Resistance characteristics of theseEucalyptus species did not correlate with taxonomic relatedness or bark characteristics, but did correspond to drought tolerance traits in their native habitat.Eucalyptus species that were resistant to attack byP. semipunctata were those that are most tolerant of drought in Australia.  相似文献

Two glasshouse experiments were conducted to examine the effects of nutrient supply and rhizobial inoculation on the performance of Lupinus pilosus genotypes differing in tolerance to calcareous soils. In experiment 1, plants were grown for 84 days in a calcareous soil (50% CaCO3; soil water content 90% of field capacity) at four nutrient treatments (no-added nutrients, added nutrients without Fe, added nutrients with soil applied FeEDDHA, added nutrients with foliar applied FeSO4). In experiment 2, plants were grown for 28 days with supply of NH4NO3 without inoculation or inoculated with Bradyrhizobium sp. (Lupinus). Chlorosis in the youngest leaves was a good indicator of the relative tolerance of the genotypes to the calcareous soil in both experiments, except the treatment with FeEDDHA at 5 mg kg–1 soil which was toxic to all genotypes. Chlorosis scores correlated with chlorophyll meter readings and chlorophyll concentrations. The foliar application of FeSO4 did not fully alleviate chlorotic symptoms despite concentrations of active or total Fe in the youngest leaves being increased. Adding nutrients and chemical nitrogen did not change the severity of chlorosis or improve the growth of the plant. The nutrient supply did not alter the ranking of tolerance of genotypes to the calcareous soil. The results suggest that nutrient deficiency or poor nodulation was not a major cause of poor plant growth on calcareous soils and that bicarbonate may exert a direct effect on chlorophyll synthesis. The mechanism for tolerance is likely to be related to an ability to exclude bicarbonate or prevent its transport to the leaves.  相似文献

Summary The macronutrient variation within four 6 year oldEucalyptus saligna and four 5 year oldE. wandoo growing on rehabilitated bauxite pits was determined. Significant differences in mean nutrient concentrations were generally recorded between good soil condition sites and poor soil sites, between tree individuals, branch height, and plant organ type; but mean nutrient values were not different among canopy aspects. Fully expanded leaves of the current year provided the most uniform nutrient levels among the plant organs and showed major differences between sites with good soil nutrient conditions and those with poor conditions. Differences in foliar and branch levels of N, P, K, Ca and Mg, the variation between sites, canopy heights and plant organ types, and the use of foliar nutrient levels to indicate deficiencies are discussed.  相似文献

Though birch and alder are the common pioneer tree species which dominate in northeast Asia, little is known about the effects of the predicted increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]) upon their photosynthesis in field conditions. To investigate this, we grew 2-year-old saplings of three Betulaceae species (Betula platyphylla var. japonica Hara, Betula maximowicziana Regel, and Alnus hirsuta Turcz) for 2 years in a free air CO2 enrichment system in northern Japan. Since the effect of high [CO2] is known to depend on soil conditions, we evaluated the responses in two soils which are widely distributed in northern Japan: infertile and immature volcanic ash (VA) soil, and fertile brown forest (BF) soil. For B. platyphylla, photosynthetic down-regulation occurred in both soils, but for B. maximowicziana, down-regulation occurred only in VA soil. The explanation is reduced nitrogen and Rubisco content in the leaf. For A. hirsuta, down-regulation occurred only in BF soil because of the accumulation of starch in foliage, which restricts CO2 diffusion inside the chloroplast. The higher photosynthetic rate of A. hirsuta in infertile VA soil could be due to the sink for photosynthates in the N2-fixing symbiont. These three species are all able to down-regulate at high [CO2]. However, it is possible that A. hirsuta would dominate in VA soil and B. maximowicziana in BF soil in the early stages of forest succession in a CO2-enhanced world.  相似文献

Environmental sampling to monitor entomopathogen titre in forest soil, a known reservoir of insect pathogens such as fungi and viruses, is important in the evaluation of conditions that could trigger epizootics and in the development of strategies for insect pest management. Molecular or PCR-based analysis of environmental samples provides a sensitive method for strain- or species-based detection, and real-time PCR, in particular, allows quantification of the organism of interest. In this study we developed a DNA extraction method and a real-time PCR assay for detection and quantification of Entomophaga maimaiga (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales), a fungal pathogen of the gypsy moth, in the organic layer of forest soil. DNA from fungal resting spores (azygospores) in soil was extracted using a detergent and bead mill homogenization treatment followed by purification of the crude DNA extract using Sephadex–polyvinylpolypyrrolidone microcolumns. The purification step eliminated most of the environmental contaminants commonly co-extracted with genomic DNA from soil samples but detection assays still required the addition of bovine serum albumin to relieve PCR inhibition. The real-time PCR assay used primers and probe based on sequence analysis of the nuclear ribosomal ITS region of several E. maimaiga and two E. aulicae strains. Comparison of threshold cycle values from different soil samples spiked with E. maimaiga DNA showed that soil background DNA and remaining co-extracted contaminants are critical factors determining detection sensitivity. Based on our results from comparisons of resting spore titres among different forest soils, estimates were best for organic soils with comparatively high densities of resting spores.  相似文献

不同施氮水平对巨桉幼树耐旱生理特征的影响   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
采用盆栽方法,研究了巨桉幼树在N0(不施氮)、N1(1.4g尿素·盆-1)、N2(2.8g尿素·盆-1)3个氮处理水平下,连续干旱不同时间[分别停水0(D0)、3、6、9、12、15、18d]时巨桉的生理响应。结果显示:(1)除D0外,试验期内N1和N2处理的巨桉叶片含水量(LWC)、叶片相对含水量(LRWC)和叶片保水力(LWHC)基本低于N0水平,尤其在干旱中期最为明显,表明在干旱胁迫前施氮可能对巨桉叶片水分生理产生负面作用。(2)干旱初期,氮处理间的可溶性蛋白(SP)和可溶性糖(SS)含量的差异不大,而干旱处理后期(9~18d),N0处理的SP和SS较初期明显增加,但N1和N2处理相对于N0变化较为平缓,表明施氮不利于SP和SS积累;N1和N2处理下脯氨酸(Pro)含量的增幅随着干旱胁迫时间的延长明显大于N0处理。(3)随干旱时间延长干旱程度加重,N1、N2处理巨桉叶片过氧化氢(H2O2)和丙二醛(MDA)含量明显高于N0处理,表明施氮使得巨桉在干旱条件下水分缺乏更为严重,产生更多的活性氧(ROS)。(4)整个干旱处理期内,施氮并未显著改变巨桉的超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)活性和抗坏血酸(AsA)含量,但N1和N2的过氧化物酶(POD)活性明显高于N0。(5)施氮增加了巨桉叶片的色素含量并在干旱初期和中期保持较高水平,在干旱初期(0~3d)增加了巨桉叶片的净光合速率(Pn),但随着干旱时间的延长而迅速下降;施氮(N1、N2)的蒸腾速率(Tr)和气孔导度(Gs)在干旱初期均显著小于N0,但在干旱中后期(6d以后)各处理间差异不显著且均处于极低水平。研究表明,水分充足时施氮有助于增强巨桉的光合同化能力,促进其生长,但遇到持续干旱时施氮更易面临水分亏缺,降低其抵抗干旱的能力,因此在巨桉人工林的经营管理过程中,不应在干旱或季节性干旱即将到来之前施氮,若干旱过程中需施氮则应采取灌溉等途径保证其充足的水分供应。  相似文献

Pot and field experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and at three field sites (Marondera, Domboshawa and Makoholi) in Zimbabwe to examine the effects of soils and fertilizers on nutrient uptake and growth of 6 exotic tree species (Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. grandis, E. tereticornis, Leucaena leucocephala, Casuarina cunninghamiana, and Acacia holosericea). Plant growth, N and P contents of all species were increased by the application of N, P, K and micronutrient fertilizers. The effect of individual nutrients (N, P, K and micronutrients) and their combination on Eucalyptus species was further investigated in a pot experiment using soil from Domboshawa. Eucalyptus species responded only to N application and no significant interactions were found between N and the other elements. Nutrient uptake results showed that E. camaldulensis and E. tereticornis removed more cations than the N-fixing trees but only in the fertilized treatments. L. leucocephala and C. cunninghamiana were higher in P, but no clear trends were observed for N. Plant growth and nutrient uptake by E. camaldulensis. C. cunninghamiana and A. holosericea were assessed in the field at the three sites. Plant species grown in the Marondera site had greater height and diameter at breast height (DBH) than those in the two other sites. These results followed trends in soil nutrient contents. The analysis of foliage revealed differences in the nutrient concentration of leaves from different trees, but no effect of site was found. The interrelationships between plant characteristics, soil and foliage nutrients were examined. In a pot experiment, mineral N was the only variable correlated with growth response and nutrient uptake, while in the field the only significant correlation was obtained with soil pH.  相似文献

The degree of relationships withinLactuca sativa and three wild relativesL. serriola, L. saligna, andL. virosa was studied by observing the performance, vigour and fertility of the F 1 hybrids obtained from crosses made in and between the four species. The crosses ofL. saligna ×L. virosa and the reciprocal crosses produced no hybrids.L. saligna andL. virosa are the least related of the four species.L. sativa ×L. serriola and the reciprocal crosses were successful and produced fertile hybrids These two species are genetically very closely related.L. saligna is known to produce, as a female parent, hybrids withL. sativa andL. serriola. Now the reciprocal cross was successful for the first time, so the unability to obtain hybrids in the past was based on the choice of accessions and not caused by unilateral incompatibility.L. virosa ×L. sativa and the reciprocal combination produced hybrids. The combinationL. serriola ×L. virosa produced hybrids with very limited fertility. In contrast to earlier reports (sterile hybrids) one combination of the reciprocal cross too produced hybrids with very limited fertility.—Some of theL. saligna ×L. sativa (and reciprocal) hybrids were found to look strikingly likeL. serriola. This adds evidence for the descent ofL. serriola andL. sativa:L. saligna also made part of the ancestral complex of the cultivated lettuce.  相似文献

Summary Glasshouse experiments have shown that the application of an acidulating agent to a calcareous soil can increase growth and alleviate severe chlorosis in an acidic population ofE. obliqua. In contrast, a calcareous population showed only a slight response to this treatment and maintained adequate growth and a low frequency of chlorosis on both control and treated calcareous soils. Foliar analyses of seedlings of the acidic population showed that alleviation of chlorosis was concomitant with a reduction in the levels of P, Ca and K, and an increase in uptake of Fe. However, the total Fe content of foliage was poorly correlated with the occurrence of severe chlorosis. Although this evidence suggested that the differential susceptibility ofE. obliqua to lime-chlorosis can be reduced by increasing the availability of Fe, the greater concentration of Fe in chlorotic seedlings indicated that lime-chlorosis may also be due to an inactivation of Fe within the plant (i.e. by P). This hypothesis was partly confirmed by a water culture experiment which showed that a combination of relatively high pH and high external levels of P could induce severe chlorosis in seedlings of the acidic population. In contrast, it appears that the calcareous population has a more efficient mechanism for absorbing Fe and holding it in an available form, even when external concentrations of P are high. It is suggested that plants which have an efficient mechanism for the uptake of Fe at relatively high pH and are less susceptible to the detrimental effects of P have been selected for on these alkaline calcareous soils.  相似文献

Our goal was to evaluate the mycorrhizal colonization, as well as the density of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal spores, in Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E. grandis monocultures at 2 years in a semiarid part of Brazil. Soil and root samples were collected in 2 consecutive years. Eucalyptus camaldulensis showed varied AM colonization level according to season of sampling, and Glomus was dominant in spore numbers. Eucalyptus grandis showed dominant ectomycorrhizal (ECM) colonization and lower AM fungal spore density. Overall results suggest that E. camaldulensis has both AM and ECM dependencies, whereas E. grandis is solely ECM dependent in the monocultures.  相似文献

Summary In Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata Donn ex Sm.) forest of south-western Australia dense germination and regeneration of the native legumeAcacia Pulchella R. Br. can occur following moderate to high intensity fire. The effect of this legume understorey on rate of decomposition and change in nutrient content ofE. marginata litter was investigated using the mesh bag techniques and by examining four components of forest floor litter representing increasing stages of decomposition. E. marginata leaf litter confined in mesh bags lost 37% of its initial dry weight in the first 8 months on the forest floor and 44% of its initial dry weight after 20 months. During this period weight loss was similar for leaf litter located in forest without legume understorey and for leaf litter placed under dense stands ofA. pulchella. MixingA. pulchella litter withE. marginata litter had no significant effect on rate ofE. marginata litter breakdown. The presence of understorey vegetation had a marked effect on chemical composition of decomposingE. marginata leaves. After 8 and 20 months exposure on the forest floor, leaf litter in mesh bags placed underA. pulchella understorey had significantly (P<0.001) higher concentration and contained significantly (P<0.001) greater amounts of N, P, K, S, Ca and Mg than leaf litter placed in areas without legume understorey. This effect was particularly marked for N and P. In forest without legume understorey the amounts of these two nutrients inE. marginata leaf litter changed little during the first 20 months of decomposition, but forE. marginata leaf litter in mesh bags underA. pulchella there were absolute gains of up to 68% in the amount of N and 109% in the amount of P during this period. This represents accumulation of N and P from sources outside the litter bags. The concentration of N, P, S, Ca and Mg were higher at each of the four stages of decomposition in eucalypt leaf litter collected from the forest floor beneathA. pulchella compared to eucalypt leaf litter collected in forest without understorey. Concentrations of N, P and S increased with stage of decomposition. Levels of these three nutrients in eucalypt litter from under the legume were 1.5 to 2.9 fold higher than in the same component of litter from forest without understorey. The effect of legume understorey on nutrient concentrations in the forest floor and on Cielement ratios in decomposing litter is discussed in relation to long term rates of litter breakdown and net mineralisation of litter nutrients.  相似文献
