During the periods 1956–1963 and 1967–1970 traps were operated to catch upstream- and downstream-migrating sea trout, Salmo trutta L. A total of 15 788 sea trout were tagged, using Carlin tags. The number of recaptures made in the traps was 4481, of which 1796 were recaptured more than once.
The distribution of the 2122 recaptures in the sea provides a picture of the sea-migration pattern. Of the sea recaptures, 52.8% were reported as within a distance of 3 km from the river mouth, compared to 0.7% more than 80 km away. All the different size-groups of sea trout were represented among both the long-distance and the short-distance migrants. The results of this study of sea trout migrations are discussed in relation to the published results for Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and sea charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), from the same river.
The four highest values recorded for mean distance of daily travel away from the river were 20, 8, 8 and 6km day−1 by smolts and 6, 6, 5 and 5km day−1 by larger-sized sea trout.
Recaptures of tagged sea trout in rivers other than the Vardnes totalled 506, of which 306 had been tagged as smolts. The calculated minimum percentage of stray is 15.5%. The proportion of sea trout from the Vardnes river that actually spawn in other rivers is not known. No significant difference in length distribution was found between the sea trout caught in the Vardnes river and those caught in other rivers. An hypothesis concerning the selective advantages of straying by anadromous salmonids living in small rivers is discussed.  相似文献

We estimated the effect of the gill‐net fisheries targeted at whitefish (Coregonus sp.) on anadromous sea trout, Salmo trutta, in the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea using separate data for fish species. The analysis of sea trout captures was based on tagging and recapture data collected in 1998–2011, while whitefish data were derived from individual samples of commercial fisheries from the same period. The mesh sizes used in gill‐net fishing and the seasonal and temporal distributions of recaptured sea trout and sampled whitefish were compared in the northern and southern Gulf of Bothnia. The trout had typically spent 1–2 years at sea, and they were mainly immature with a median body length of 40–43 cm at the time of recapture in gill nets. Despite the increase in the minimum permitted landing size from 40 to 50 cm in 2008, the median length of recaptured trout remained unchanged during the study period. Most (59%) of the gillnetted trout were caught in the southern Gulf of Bothnia in gill nets with mesh sizes of 40–45 mm, which were also used in the whitefish fishery (72%). In the northern Gulf of Bothnia, nets with a smaller mesh size of 25–39 mm took 83% of the whitefish catch and 39% from recaptured trout. In both areas, the overlap in mesh sizes used to gill‐net catch whitefish and sea trout increased during the study period. There were clear seasonal and areal differences in the relative probability of sea trout being captured in gill nets, suggesting that carefully tailored spatial and temporal restrictions on gill‐net fisheries could provide a tool to protect young sea trout without causing intolerable difficulties for the fisheries targeting other species.  相似文献

In the present study, pop‐off data storage tags (pDST) without any transmitting capabilities were attached to 118 adult salmonids in a 19 000 km2 freshwater system (Lake Ontario). The 9·3 cm long cylindrical tags were externally attached to fishes using a backpack‐style harness, set to record pressure (dBar ≈ depth in m) and temperature every 70 s (and at some key times, every 5 s) and programmed to release from the harness and float to the surface after c. 1 year. Recapture of the bright‐orange tags for data retrieval relied on members of the public finding tags on shore, or on anglers capturing fishes with tags attached and using the contact information displayed on each tag to mail tags to the research team in exchange for a monetary reward. Thirty‐seven tags were found and returned from the 118 released (31%), while 26 of the 118 tags (22%) remained scheduled to pop‐off in summer 2017. Of the 37 tags returned, 23 were from wild‐caught fishes (out of 88 wild‐caught and tagged fishes; 26%) and yielded useful data whereas 14 were from hatchery‐reared fishes that were opportunistically tagged and appear to have been unable to acclimate to life in the wild and died days to weeks after release. The field study described here thus demonstrated that pDSTs can be a viable option for collecting large amounts of high‐resolution depth and temperature data for salmonids in freshwater systems. Technical challenges, limitations and unknowns related to the use of pDSTs with freshwater fishes are discussed. In addition, pDSTs are compared with alternate electronic tagging technologies and assessed for their potential as a more widespread tool in research on freshwater fishes.  相似文献

In 1998, 9500 juvenile New Zealand longfin eels Anguilla dieffenbachii (mean total length, LT, 42 cm) captured from the lower Clutha River were transferred upstream to Lake Hawea, a high‐country oligotrophic lake in the same catchment where recruitment of juvenile eels has been prevented by hydroelectric dams since 1958. A total of 2010 of the transferred A. dieffenbachii were tagged with coded wire tags. Ten years later in 2008, the A. dieffenbachii population in Lake Hawea was sampled resulting in 399 recaptures (distinguishable by the presence of tags and by LT from the remnant resident population of large old A. dieffenbachii) of the 1998 transfers; 79 (19·2%) of the recaptured fish had tags compared with 21·3% at release, indicating good tag retention and low mortality due to tagging. All recaptured tagged A. dieffenbachii were female. Mean annual growth over the 10 years since release was 3·80 cm year?1 for all recaptures and 3·65 cm year?1 for tag recaptures, and both were significantly greater than the estimate of 2·38 cm year?1 at release. After release, mean condition (K) increased significantly (P < 0·001) for all recaptures and tag recaptures. Annual length growth increment was linear. Tag recaptures showed significant increases in somatic growth rate post‐transfer, and otoliths from the 2008 recaptured A. dieffenbachii were examined to see whether any similar enhanced growth after transfer was incorporated into the otolith structure that would serve as a date stamp. Measurement of otolith ring radii indicated that an increase in the radius occurred on most otoliths corresponding to the year after transfer. Because there was 9 years of completed growth following the observed growth inflection on the otoliths, this was strong evidence that opaque rings were formed annually.  相似文献

Lice-infected sea trout populations were monitored using fish traps in the Romsdalsfjord (Norway). The reliability and efficiency of this capture technique, which allows estimation of lice infestation rates without killing the fish, was evaluated through a mark–recapture study. A total of 2447 sea trout smolts were captured, tagged and released over a three-year period. There was a considerable variation in capture rates (range: 0.4–17.7 fish per day) and sea lice numbers (number of lice per fish: 2.8–30.3; number of lice per gram body weight: 0.02–0.69) among localities, sampling times and years. Recapture rates of tagged fish with traps, which were low (2% or 0.11 fish per day), showed that the risk for pseudoreplication was minor, in terms of counting lice on the same fish several times. Most of the tagged sea trout (90%) were recaptured within the first two months after release, and no significant variations in lice numbers were found between tagging and recapture. The lack of differences in lice levels between tagging and recapture during the first week after tagging indicated that the method most likely would not significantly underestimate the lice infestations due to loss of lice during handling. Therefore, our results confirm that the use of fish traps is a suitable method for estimation of lice numbers on wild salmonids.  相似文献

Passive integrated transponder (PIT) technology was used to study the behaviour of fishes during the summer season in two headwater streams of northeastern Portugal. A total of 71 PIT tags (12 mm long × 2.1 mm diameter) were surgically implanted in 1+ stocked (39) and native (32) brown trout of two size classes (<20.0 and ≥20.0 cm). Eight independent antennae, connected to a multi-point decoder (MPD reader) unit, were placed in different microhabitats, selected randomly every 3 days during the observation period (29 August–9 September in Baceiro stream and 19 September–4 October in Sabor stream). The results confirmed this method as a suitable, labour efficient tool to assess the movement and habitat use of sympatric stocked and native trout populations. About 76.9% of stocked and 59.4% of native PIT tagged trouts were detected. Multivariate techniques (CCA, DFA and classification tree) showed a separation in habitat use between the two sympatric populations. Stocked trout mainly used the microhabitats located in the middle of the channel with higher depths and without cover. Furthermore, these fishes displayed a greater mobility and a diel activity pattern different to native trout populations.  相似文献

Rapidly expanding use of biologging devices is increasingly bringing novel insights into ornithology. Consequently, to maximize bird welfare and data quality, this growth calls for ensuring that devices are properly attached. Here, we provide a diagram for constructing a simple, field‐adjustable leg‐loop harness suitable for many small and medium‐sized birds (< 200 g). We make harnesses prior to fieldwork using Teflon ribbon and a single crimp, then custom‐fit each harness to birds in the field. This largely removes the need for pre‐deployment field trials to determine harness size and ensures best possible fit. To evaluate the effects of harnesses on birds in the field, we marked 10 non‐migratory species in central Amazonia and assessed their body mass at recapture with linear mixed models. Of 90 tags deployed, we recovered 43 (48%) an average of 359 days later. No individuals lost their tag. Additionally, when recaptures were compared to original captures, body mass was not lower for either tagged birds or 17 banded‐only birds. This suggests that tags attached with our harness had little effect on birds, an encouraging result at a time when increasing options for tracking birds challenge researchers to properly attach various types of devices.  相似文献

While PIT-tag tracking using mobile antennas is being increasingly used to study fish movement and survival in streams, little is known about the limitations of the method, especially over longer periods of time and under different environmental settings. We used 6 years of data combining tagging, mobile antenna tracking and recaptures of Salmo trutta in multiple small streams in the Lake Lucerne drainage area in Switzerland to evaluate the relative importance of different environmental and intrinsic factors affecting the efficiency of the method. Our study system and experimental design allowed us to accurately verify the continuous presence and survival of recaptured fish in the stream after tracking, which meant that we could estimate detection probability with high confidence. The mean detection probability of tagged trout was 43%, but we found that fish length had a strong negative effect on detection probability, especially in males. Multivariate axes of stream environmental features did not predict efficiency but stream width alone was significantly positively correlated with efficiency. Additionally, stream temperature when tracking had a positive effect on fish detectability. Tag loss at recapture was globally rare (<8%) but common in large postspawn females (>30%). Based on the escape response of fish after detection, we could estimate the proportion of ghost tags, which reached a plateau of around 80% 2 years after tagging. We finally showed that our models of tag loss, fish detection and escape response are needed to interpret detection events. Our results highlight that individual variation in detection probability and tag loss is high and has to be considered for analysis.  相似文献

Hatchery-reared fish may not be behaviorally competent in the wild, thus increasing mortality rates of fishes stocked into natural environments. The goal of this study was to determine whether in situ acclimation at release sites can increase survival of juvenile hatchery-reared common snook (Centropomus undecimalis), a catadromous fish, stocked into an estuary in Sarasota, Florida. Juvenile snook (76-251 mm fork length) were tagged with coded-wire tags and released in four locations distributed along a salinity gradient of North Creek estuary. Three replicate releases were performed at each location. Overall, 1935 snook were acclimated in enclosures for 3 d, then, released simultaneously with 1925 non-acclimated snook (non caged snook transported direct from the laboratory and stocked into the creek). For recaptures of snook at large for 3 d or more, mean recapture rates of experimental release groups were significantly different (multiway ANOVA testing recapture rates by acclimation treatment, release site, and interactions, P = 0.001). Specifically, mean recapture rates of acclimated groups were 1.92 higher than those for non-acclimated groups (P = 0.002); hatchery snook recaptured from two of the four release sites represented 70% of total recaptures (P = 0.001); interactions between acclimation treatment and release site were not significant (P = 0.71). Site fidelity was approximately 60% regardless of acclimation condition, and did not significantly influence recapture rates. Thus, in situ acclimation has potential to significantly improve both post-release survival and information gained in stocking programs.  相似文献

Understanding predator–prey interactions and food web dynamics is important for ecosystem-based management in aquatic environments, as they experience increasing rates of human-induced changes, such as the addition and removal of fishes. To quantify the post-stocking survival and predation of a prey fish in Lake Ontario, 48 bloater Coregonus hoyi were tagged with acoustic telemetry predation tags and were tracked on an array of 105 acoustic receivers from November 2018 to June 2019. Putative predators of tagged bloater were identified by comparing movement patterns of six species of salmonids (i.e., predators) in Lake Ontario with the post-predated movements of bloater (i.e., prey) using a random forests algorithm, a type of supervised machine learning. A total of 25 bloater (53% of all detected) were consumed by predators on average (± S.D. ) 3.1 ± 2.1 days after release. Post-predation detections of predators occurred for an average (± S.D. ) of 78.9 ± 76.9 days, providing sufficient detection data to classify movement patterns. Tagged lake trout Salvelinus namaycush provided the most reliable classification from behavioural predictor variables (89% success rate) and was identified as the main consumer of bloater (consumed 50%). Movement networks between predicted and tagged lake trout were significantly correlated over a 6 month period, supporting the classification of lake trout as a common bloater predator. This study demonstrated the ability of supervised learning techniques to provide greater insight into the fate of stocked fishes and predator–prey dynamics, and this technique is widely applicable to inform future stocking and other management efforts.  相似文献

Marker-loss is a common feature of mark–recapture studies and important as it may bias parameter estimation. A slight alteration in tag-site of double tagged southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina), marked at Marion Island from 1983 to 2005 in an ongoing mark–recapture program, had important consequences for tag-loss. We calculated age-specific tag-retention rates and cumulative tag-retention probabilities using a maximum likelihood model selection approach in the software application TAG_LOSS 3.2.0. Under the tag-loss independence assumption, double tag-loss of inner interdigital webbing tags (IIT; 17 cohorts) remained below 1% in the first 5 yr and increased monotonically as seals aged, with higher tag-loss in males. Lifetime cumulative IIT tag-loss was 11.9% for females and 18.4% for males, and equivalent for all cohorts. Changing the tag-site to the outer interdigital webbing (OIT; 6 cohorts) resulted in increased and cohort-dependent tag-loss, although the variation (mean ± 95% CI) in cumulative tag-loss probabilities never exceeded 5.3% between cohorts at similar age. Although different studies may homogenize techniques, we advocate the importance of data set-specific assessment of tag-loss rates to ensure greatest confidence in population parameters obtained from mark–recapture experiments. Permanent marking should be implemented where feasible.  相似文献

The retention and readability of visible implant (VI) tags were evaluated in juvenile brown trout. The tags were implanted in the adipose eyelid tissue posterior to the left eye, in a total of 6697 fish in 18 groups. During the first year, tag retention increased with tagging experience, from 58 to 64% in 3–summer–old fish and from 86 to 96% in 4–summer–old fish. The effect of fish size at tagging on tag loss was clear in the 3–summer–old groups in 1991 (ANOVA, P = 0.00001). Tag retention in 3–year–old and 4–summer–old fish in 1992 and 1993 varied from 96 to 99% and the handling of the fish after tagging affected retention significantly ( t –test, P = 0.0002), the average being 98.7% for those transposed by submerging and 96.5% in those transposed by dropping. After inspection the fish were released into a natural environment. On recapture after 6 months or more the red tags (faded almost to white) and yellow tags (originally close to white) were difficult to distinguish. No infection or tissue damage was found after either inspection or stocking.  相似文献

Many crustaceans are highly exploited fisheries species, but determining the population parameters of these animals via mark-recapture techniques is problematic, primarily due to tag-loss during moulting of the exoskeleton. Recently developed internal elastomer tags may overcome this challenging problem, since they are completely encased in the tissues beneath the exoskeleton. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of internal elastomer tags in a wild population of painted crayfish (Panulirus versicolor) over an 18-month period. Seventy animals were double-tagged in the abdominal musculature, with individuality obtained using different combinations of tag colour and tag location. Forty individuals were recaptured after 6, 12 and (or) 18 months, giving an overall recapture rate of 57%. Annual tag retention was estimated to be 98%, since only one instance of tag-loss was observed, despite numerous episodes of moulting among tagged individuals. The majority of tags (95%) were easily visible, even after 18 months at liberty. Nonetheless, small reductions in tag condition were observed after the first six months (mostly due to fading and [or] fragmentation), but this did not interfere with overall tag readability. Tag condition did not decline in the following 12 months, nor did it vary with gender or tag location. It is concluded that internal elastomer tags are an effective method for marking wild crayfish over long-term periods. Given the durability of elastomer, and the capacity for individual identification of large numbers of animals, such tags may be suitable for commercial-scale fishery applications.  相似文献

One- and two-year-old hatchery reared juveniles of seven freshwater resident and anadromous populations of Scandinavian brown trout were released in the outer and inner part of the Oslofjord and in the River Akerselva, flowing through the city of Oslo. Recapture rates were highest (mean 20.3%) for river released fish and lowest for those released in the outer (16.8%) and inner (12.1%) fjord. In general, recapture rate increased with fish size at release (r=0.76). When released in fresh water, most of the recaptures were from fresh water and when released in the fjord, most recaptures were from the fjord. In general, freshwater resident stocks showed a higher degree of freshwater residency than anadromous stocks. However, mean migratory distance was longer for freshwater resident than anadromous fish. Trout moved longer distances at sea when released in the outer than in the inner fjord. Specific growth rate and size at recapture varied among release sites and stocks; they were highest for fish released in the outer fjord and lowest for river-released trout. There was no consistent difference in sea growth between freshwater resident and anadromous stocks. Estimated total yield was highest for fish released in the outer fjord, whereas there was no significant difference in yields between trout released in the river and the inner Oslofjord.  相似文献

Old World vultures are in decline across their entire range. Although critical for the formulation of effective conservation measures, neither survival nor movement patterns of African vultures are adequately known. This paper presents survival and movement data on the African white‐backed vultures (Gyps africanus) from South Africa. Survival estimates were modelled on resightings of tagged vultures. Birds were captured en masse and resighted between November 2005 and December 2010. A total of 93 adult and subadult birds were fitted with uniquely numbered patagial tags, which were resighted 3707 times(mean of 39.8 resightings per bird). The programme MARK was used to estimate survival. The best model was one where survival and recaptures varied only with time (e.g. year). However, owing to the fading (illegibility) of tags in later years, the relationship with time is probably spurious. The second best model was one where survival and recaptures varied with age and time. Annual survival estimates increased from 85.2% in second‐year birds to 99.9% in adults. This corresponds well with the survival of two other Gyps vultures that have been studied to date and underscores the point that additional mortality of adults in these long‐lived species will result in rapid population declines.  相似文献

Archival tags were used to study the movement and depth behaviour of school sharks, Galeorhinus galeus, in southern australia. Thirty fish were tagged in late 1997, and to date there have been nine recaptures (30% recapture rate). Periods at liberty varied from 8 days to 18 months. The sharks spent about 80% of their time on the continental shelf, and appeared to swim close to the bottom during the day. At night they often ascended for periods of up to several hours, except at times around the full moon. When in deep water, the sharks typically descended at dawn to depths of up to 600m, before ascending at dusk. It was not possible to use the light data from the tags to estimate position when the sharks were in deep water, because they were often at depths beyond the sensitivity of the tag. In shallower water, longitude was estimated from the light data but latitude was estimated from the maximum daily depth, assuming the fish were on the bottom. The timing of the dives in deepwater appeared sufficiently regular to offer the prospect of using it to estimate longitude. We propose future research using archival tags on this species should address questions about female reproductive migrations, pelagic behaviour and vertical movements.  相似文献

The effects of large, externally attached pop‐up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were compared with those of small implanted data storage tags (DSTs) on adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during their ocean migration in regards to depth utilization, diving depth, diving rate, diving speed and temperatures experienced. Additionally the return rate and growth of individuals tagged with PSATs was compared with those of small acoustic tags and DSTs. Overall, the depth distribution of individuals tagged with PSATs was similar to that of those tagged with DSTs, reflecting the pelagic nature of S. salar at sea. Individuals tagged with PSATs, however, dived less frequently and to shallower depths, and dived and surfaced at slower velocities. Sea surface temperatures experienced by individuals tagged with PSATs were similar to those experienced by those tagged with DSTs for the same time of year, suggesting that there were no large differences in the ocean migration. Return rates did not depend on whether individuals were tagged with PSATs or not, indicating that survival at sea was not impacted by PSATs in comparison to small internal tags. Individuals tagged with PSATs, however, had a smaller increase in body mass than those tagged with acoustic tags or DSTs. It was concluded that PSATs are suitable for use in researching large‐scale migratory behaviour of adult S. salar at sea, but that some effects on their behaviour from tagging must be expected. Effects of PSATs may be largest in the short term when S. salar are swimming in bursts at high speeds. Even though individuals tagged with PSATs performed deep and frequent dives, the results of this study suggest that untagged individuals would perform even deeper and more frequent dives than tagged individuals.  相似文献

The recapture rate of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) after river ascent was examined by the trapping and tagging of ascending spawners in the lower reaches of the Simojoki River, which flows into the northern Baltic Sea. In 1997 and 1998, altogether 825 Carlin‐tagged salmon were released to continue their upstream migration. Of these, 800 could be sexed and categorized as reared (91%) or wild (9%) salmon. In 1997, most of the ascending salmon were multi‐sea‐winter (MSW) fish, whereas in 1998 almost all were one‐sea‐winter (1SW) male grilse due to the late trapping season. About 10% of all tagged fish were recaptured, two‐thirds of which were caught in the river before their descent to the sea. There was no difference in the recapture rate between salmon of wild (8.5%) or reared (9.5%) origin, or between females (11.6%) and males (9.3%). Generalized linear models for data from 1997 showed that the recapture rate increased with length and age of females, but that the opposite was true for males. River fishing did not seem to remove proportionally more early ascending salmon than fish that ascended later.  相似文献

The efficacy and sub‐lethal consequences of single and double tagging European catfish Silurus glanis with Petersen disc and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags were examined in short (laboratory) and longer‐term (field) experiments. Tag retention in the laboratory was 100%, with normal behaviour (i.e. feeding) in all fish returning within 36 h. In the field, 65 of 120 tagged S. glanis were recaptured from five small study ponds, with 85% retaining their PIT tags, though recapture rates and tagging efficacy were highly variable amongst locations. This is consistent with literature for other fishes, suggesting that tagging efficiency is variable across species and largely context dependent (fish length, tagging location, habitat).  相似文献

Sea trout were sampled by shore seining in the sea lochs of the west coast of Scotland between 1970 and 1974, This area is of special interest because of the indentation of the coastline and the varying degree of freshwater and marine influence in the sea lochs. The majority of fish caught were in their first year after smolt migration. These post-smolts were caught mainly in May and June, after which the number of trout present was low until fish at the 'whirling' stage appeared in the catches at the end of August, continuing through to the following spring. An additional recruitment of mainly unsilvered young trout from the rivers to the sea lochs was found in the autumn. Age and sex composition of both spring and autumn recruits, and of mature fish, were investigated and compared.
A total of 3228 sea trout were tagged, with 311 recaptures. These recaptures supported the evidence from smolt trapping and beach seine catches that, in the first post-migration year, the smolts migrate from the rivers from late March to early May, they then migrate from the sea lochs in May and June and return in late summer and autumn.  相似文献
