Human mate choice is central to individuals' lives and to the evolution of the species, but the basis of variation in mate choice is not well understood. Here we looked at a large community-based sample of twins and their partners and parents ([Formula: see text] individuals) to test for genetic and family environmental influences on mate choice, while controlling for and not controlling for the effects of assortative mating. Key traits were analyzed, including height, body mass index, age, education, income, personality, social attitudes, and religiosity. This revealed near-zero genetic influences on male and female mate choice over all traits and no significant genetic influences on mate choice for any specific trait. A significant family environmental influence was found for the age and income of females' mate choices, possibly reflecting parental influence over mating decisions. We also tested for evidence of sexual imprinting, where individuals acquire mate-choice criteria during development by using their opposite-sex parent as the template of a desirable mate; there was no such effect for any trait. The main discernible pattern of mate choice was assortative mating; we found that partner similarity was due to initial choice rather than convergence and also at least in part to phenotypic matching.  相似文献

In this study, assortative mating for different morphological traits was studied in a captive population of house sparrows (Passer domesticus). Males were larger than females. Assortative mating was found for tail length, wing length and general body size. Males with larger badge size mated with females with longer tails. The strongest assortative mating occurred for tail length (r=0.77), and this assortative mating remained significant after controlling for wing length, mass and tarsus length, suggesting that it was not an artefact of assortative mating for body size. The possibility of sexual selection for tail length in the house sparrow is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

This review presents a comprehensive survey of the literature on mate selection and non‐random mating in man. The topics discussed include: (1) genetic aspects of non‐random mating for complex traits; (2) evidence on resemblance between spouses on a large variety of traits such as intelligence, personality, physical characteristics, and sociocultural traits; (3) a critical review of sociological and psychological theories offered to account for assortative mating, and (4) implications of assortative mating for marital satisfaction. It is suggested that the factors leading to choice of marriage partners need to be studied from the point of view of multivariate profiles rather than single traits. Such studies will require sophisticated methodologies of research design and data analysis.  相似文献

Traits that are attractive to the opposite sex are often positively correlated when scaled such that scores increase with attractiveness, and this correlation typically has a genetic component. Such traits can be genetically correlated due to genes that affect both traits (“pleiotropy”) and/or because assortative mating causes statistical correlations to develop between selected alleles across the traits (“gametic phase disequilibrium”). In this study, we modeled the covariation between monozygotic and dizygotic twins, their siblings, and their parents (total N = 7,905) to elucidate the nature of the correlation between two potentially sexually selected traits in humans: height and IQ. Unlike previous designs used to investigate the nature of the height–IQ correlation, the present design accounts for the effects of assortative mating and provides much less biased estimates of additive genetic, non-additive genetic, and shared environmental influences. Both traits were highly heritable, although there was greater evidence for non-additive genetic effects in males. After accounting for assortative mating, the correlation between height and IQ was found to be almost entirely genetic in nature. Model fits indicate that both pleiotropy and assortative mating contribute significantly and about equally to this genetic correlation.  相似文献

Mate choice matters for inclusive fitness, household economic efficiency, assimilation, stratification, and economic inequalities in society. In positive assortative mating, people pair with someone who resembles them along a trait, whereas in negative assortative mating, people pair with someone who differs from them along a trait. In industrial nations, people tend to follow positive assortative mating for fundamental demographic dimensions (e.g., age, schooling) and might practice negative assortative mating for economic outcomes (e.g., earnings). Research on assortative mating has focused on industrial nations, generally compared only one trait between couples, and paid scant attention to the effects of assortative mating for offspring well-being. If assortative mating enhances inclusive fitness, it might also enhance offspring well-being. Drawing on data from a farming–foraging society in the Bolivian Amazon (Tsimane') that practices preferential cross-cousin marriage, we (a) identify six parental traits (age, knowledge, wealth, schooling, height, and smiles) for which Tsimane' might practice assortative mating and (b) test the hypothesis that assortative mating enhances offspring well-being. Proxies for offspring well-being include height and school attainment. Tsimane' resemble people of industrial nations in practicing mostly positive assortative mating. Pairwise, mother–father and Pearson correlations of age, schooling, and earnings among Tsimane' resemble correlations of industrial nations. Correlation coefficients for the six parental traits were far higher than correlations that might happened just by chance. We found weak support for the hypothesis that assortative mating improves offspring well-being.  相似文献

While numerous studies have reported differential assortative mating coefficients for personality traits, little research has centered on cross-sample comparisons to determine their degree of generalizability. The present investigation examines the assortative mating coefficients for scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) from five separate studies. An examination of these patterns of significant coefficients offers little support for this cross-sample generalizability. No significant correlations resulted between these studies in their coefficients, even when the unreliability of the different measures was controlled. It is concluded that there is little evidence to support statements of differential importance in assortment for personality variables beyond the sample under investigation.  相似文献

Human mate preferences are known to be related to a number of morphological traits. Those relating to female waist-to-hip ratio or body mass index and to male height appear to be distinctive mate-choice criteria and are known to be related to reproductive success. In addition to absolute height, a possibly important mate-choice criterion may be relative height, i.e. the extent of sexual dimorphism in stature (SDS = male height/female height) between oneself and a potential partner. Here, I demonstrate that people adjust their preferences for SDS in relation to their own height in order to increase the potential pool of partners. This causes nonlinearity in assortative mating in relation to height and shows that in relation to intrapopulational SDS both men and women are responsible for stabilizing selection.  相似文献

It has been argued that size matters on the human mate market: both stated preferences and mate choices have been found to be non-random with respect to height and weight. But how universal are these patterns? Most of the literature on human mating patterns is based on post-industrial societies. Much less is known about mating behaviour in more traditional societies. Here we investigate mate choice by analysing whether there is any evidence for non-random mating with respect to size and strength in a forager community, the Hadza of Tanzania. We test whether couples assort for height, weight, body mass index (BMI), per cent fat and grip strength. We test whether there is a male-taller norm. Finally, we test for an association between anthropometric variables and number of marriages. Our results show no evidence for assortative mating for height, weight, BMI or per cent fat; no evidence for a male-taller norm and no evidence that number of marriages is associated with our size variables. Hadza couples may assort positively for grip strength, but grip strength does not affect the number of marriages. Overall we conclude that, in contrast to post-industrial societies, mating appears to be random with respect to size in the Hadza.  相似文献

The marital correlations between 97 pairs of parents of Punjabi twins reveal positive phenotypic assortative mating for body traits while almost random mating with respect to cranio-facial traits. There is no evidence of any significant negative assortative mating for any of the 50 traits. The results have been compared with those from other world populations. The data contradict the earlier reported hypothesis that assortative mating is associated with lowered fertility.  相似文献

Abstract

Correlation between parents for a given characteristic substantively affects estimates of both genetic and environmental parameters. Spouse similarity for biological, adoptive, and nonadoptive parents was examined in a study using a full‐adoption design. With regard to isophormic comparisons, moderate assortment was found for age, educational attainment, performance on tests of verbal ability, family background, and habits such as alcohol and current smoking behavior. The effects of cross‐assortative mating on population covariance and cross‐correlation between relatives are discussed. Although of considerable theoretical interest, little cross‐trait assortative mating for personality and cognition was found in the present study, suggesting that its effects will not be large, at least for these variables. Because “assortative mating” may differ from “assortative marriage,” comparisons among estimates of homogamy for birth, adoptive, and nonadoptive parents were made. Results indicated differential assortment among the three types of parents for some of the variables examined.  相似文献

Married couples in four Solomon Islands tribes did not mate assortatively for body size or shape. All four groups had high correlations (0.6 to 0.9) between spouses' age and moderate correlations, 0.3 to 0.5, for age-associated traits like nose height, ear length, and grayness of hair. Three brownskinned groups from Malaita (Kwaio, Lau, and Baegu) showed significant assortative mating for skin color whereas the very dark-skinned Nasioi, from Bougainville, did not. The positive correlations between spouses for skin color, with r's for various bodily regions ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 in the three Malaitan tribes, persisted when age was partialled out. As expected with assortative mating, the Malaitans' skin color was highly variable.  相似文献

Summary This study examined how assortative mating (without selection) based on linear combinations of two traits could be used to change genetic parameters so as to increase efficiency of selection. The efficiency of the Smith-Hazel index for improvement of multiple traits is a function of phenotypic and genetic variances and covariances, and of the relative economic values of the traits involved. Assortative mating is known to change genetic variances and covariances. Recursive formulae were derived to obtain these variances and covariances after t generations of assortative mating on linear combinations (mating rules) of phenotypic values for two traits, with a given correlation between mates. Selection efficiency after t generations of assortative mating without selection was expressed as a function of random mating genetic parameters, economic values, the mating rule, and the correlation between mates. Selection efficiency was maximized with respect to the coefficients in the mating rule. Because the objective function was nonlinear, a computer routine was used for maximizing it. Two cases were considered. When random mating heritabilities for the two traits were h X 2 =0.25 and h Y 2 =0.50, the genetic correlation rXY=-0.60, and the economic values were aX=3 and aY=1, continued assortative mating based on the optimal mating rule for 31 generations (with a correlation of 0.80 between mates) increased selection efficiency by 29%. Heritabilities changed to 0.38 and 0.66, respectively, and the genetic correlation became – 0.79. When h X 2 =0.60, h Y 2 =0.60, rXY=– 0.20, a1=1 and a2=1, 36 generations of continued assortative mating with the optimal mating rule increased the efficiency of selection by 17%, heritabilities became h X 2 = h Y 2 =0.71, and the genetic correlation changed to 0.25. Only three generations of assortative mating were required to change the sign of the genetic correlation.  相似文献

Summary Two simulated data sets, representing random mating and positive assortative mating in a beef cattle population over 10 rounds of mating, were each composed of 100 replicates. Three correlated traits were considered; calving ease (CE), 200 day weight (WW) and postweaning gain (PG). All selection practiced in the simulation was random. Positive assortative mating, which was based on parental WW phenotypic records, increased the progeny additive genetic variance of WW. The absolute values of genetic covariances and correlations between WW with CE and PG were also increased by positive assortative mating. This paper develops methods to partition the phenotypic correlation between mates for a focal trait--the standard measure for assortative mating--into a direct component and additional indirect components. Indirect assortative mating occurs when a nonassorting trait is correlated within individuals to a directly assorting trait. Direct and indirect assortative mating is assessed for flowering phenology in Brassica rapa. The flowering time of pollen recipients (mothers) was strongly correlated (rho=0.67) to that of potential pollen donors (fathers). Similarly, recipients and donors were correlated for duration of their flowering periods (rho=0.32) and stem diameters (rho=0.52). A partitioning of between-mate correlations revealed direct assortative mating for flowering time and period duration. However, assortment for stem diameter is explained solely through its correlation to flowering time. Examination of standard quantitative genetic theory shows that indirect assortative mating inflates genetic variance in a focal trait and the genetic covariance between focal and phenotypically correlated traits.  相似文献

Measures of four dimensions of personality (Psychoticism, Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Lie scores) and six aspects of social attitudes (to sex, taxation, militarism, politics, religion and a general conservatism scale) were obtained by mailed questionnaire from 29,691 US subjects including adult twins (n = 14,761) their parents (n = 2360), their spouses (n = 4391), siblings (n = 3184) and adult children (n = 4800). After correction for the average effects of age, sex and source of sample, familial correlations were computed for 80 distinct biological and social relationships. The data allow for the estimation of the additive and non-additive effects of genes, assortative mating, vertical cultural inheritance and other non-parental effects of the shared environment on differences in personality and social attitudes. The interaction of genetic and environmental effects with sex may also be analyzed. Model-fitting analyses show that personality and social attitude measures differ markedly in major features of family resemblance. Additive and dominant genetic effects contribute to differences in both personality and attitudes, but the effects of the family environment, including vertical cultural transmission from parent to child, are much more marked for social attitudes than for personality. There is substantial assortative mating for social attitudes and almost none for personality. The causes of family resemblance depend significantly on sex for almost every variable studied. These findings clarify and extend the more tentative findings derived from previous twin, family and adoption studies.  相似文献

Adaptive speciation occurs when frequency-dependent ecological interactions generate conditions of disruptive selection to which lineage splitting is an adaptive response. Under such selective conditions, evolution of assortative mating mechanisms enables the break-up of the ancestral lineage into diverging and reproductively isolated descendent species. Extending previous studies, I investigate models of adaptive speciation due to the evolution of indirect assortative mating that is based on three different mating traits: the degree of assortativity, a female preference trait and a male marker trait. For speciation to occur, linkage disequilibria between different mating traits, e.g. between female preference and male marker traits, as well as between mating traits and the ecological trait, must evolve. This can lead to novel speciation scenarios, e.g. when reproductive isolation is generated by a splitting in the degree of assortativeness, with one of the emerging lineages mating assortatively, and the other one disassortatively. I investigate the effects of variation in various model parameters on the likelihood of speciation, as well as robustness of speciation to introducing costs of assortative mating. Even though in the models presented speciation requires the genetic potential for strong assortment as well as rather restrictive ecological conditions, the results show that adaptive speciation due to the evolution of assortative mating when mate choice is based on separate female preference and male marker traits is a theoretically plausible evolutionary scenario.  相似文献

本研究以黑眶蟾蜍(Duttaphrynus melanostictus)为研究对象,通过对比黑眶蟾蜍抱对个体的体长、头长、头宽、眼间距、鼓膜径、耳后腺长、眼径、前臂及手长、前肢长以及后肢长等形态特征,分析雌性黑眶蟾蜍繁殖输出与其体型的关系,探究黑眶蟾蜍两性异形模式及其与雌性生育力的关系;同时通过对配对个体形态学特征的相关性分析探究了黑眶蟾蜍的配对模式。结果表明,黑眶蟾蜍雌性体长和体重显著大于雄体;两性的所有局部形态特征均与体长成正相关;去除体长因素影响后,雄性头长以及后肢长均明显大于雌性,其余局部形态特征两性间则皆无显著差异。雌体的窝卵重、窝卵数均与其体长和体重成正相关关系。雌性成体的前肢长与抱对雄性成体的前肢长之间呈显著正相关,其余形态特征两性间均无相关性。研究表明,生育力选择是导致黑眶蟾蜍两性异形的重要驱动力;黑眶蟾蜍的选型配对模式未表现在个体大小上,而是体现在局部特征(前肢长),这不仅为揭示两栖类配对模式的普遍性提供了参考,还表明对两栖类选型配对的研究应以多个性状为对象。  相似文献

Scrotal circumference as an index of testes size, along with body weight, wither height, heart girth and body condition score were measured fortnightly for 114 Menz ram lambs from weaning (91+/-7 SD days) until puberty, which was defined as age at first collection of an ejaculate with 50 x 10(6) spermatozoa and 10% motility. The animals were maintained on poor (n=28), low (n=29), medium (n=29) or high (n=28) levels of nutrition through grazing and supplementation. Further, half the lambs in each group were drenched for endoparasites. Daily gains in live weight, wither height, heart girth and scrotal circumference were 48.5+/-1.6 g, 0.05+/-0.01 cm, 0.07+/-0.01 cm and 0.07+/-0.03 cm, respectively for the period from weaning to puberty and varied with level of nutrition (P<0.05 to 0.001) but not with drenching or its interaction with nutrition level (P>0.10). Scrotal circumference increased linearly and was strongly correlated with age, body weight, wither height, and heart girth (r = 0.83 to 0.85, P<0.001), and lamb weight could be predicted by the equation: 6.35 + 0.53 scrotal circumference (R(2) = 0.73). Mean age, body weight and condition score at puberty were 288+/-6 days, 19.3+/-0.4 kg and 2.6+/-0.06, respectively, and varied due to season of birth, level of nutrition and weaning weight (P<0.01 to 0.001). The nutrition level also influenced (P<0.001) scrotal circumference at puberty, averaging 21.5+/-0.3 cm. It was concluded that postweaning nutrition management had a strong influence on lamb weight gain, which in turn was related to testicular growth and puberty onset in Menz ram lambs. The suitability of scrotal size measurement as a criterion for early selection of tropical ram lambs is emphasised.  相似文献
