The present study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that the deficits in copulatory behavior observed in hyperprolactinemic male rats may be related to a reduction in hypothalamic release of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH). Adult male Fischer 344 rats were made hyperprolactinemic by ectopic pituitary grafts or were sham operated and 30 min prior to being tested for copulatory performance received a single subcutaneous injection of 500 ng LHRH, 100 ng LHRH, or saline. On different occasions, testosterone (T) levels were measured in plasma collected 30 min following identical treatments. Plasma prolactin (PRL) levels were determined in samples collected 30 min after injection of 500 ng LHRH. Pituitary grafting produced the expected, significant increase in plasma PRL levels and significant deficits in copulatory behavior. Treatment of hyperprolactinemic subjects with 500 ng LHRH significantly reduced both the time to first intromission and the time to ejaculation to times comparable with those of sham-operated subjects. The 100-ng dose produced a significant reduction in mount frequency. Plasma T levels were significantly elevated following either dose of LHRH. These results demonstrate that exogenous LHRH can restore normal copulatory performance in hyperprolactinemic male rats and support the hypothesis that a reduction in hypothalamic LHRH release is responsible for the behavioral deficits observed in those animals.  相似文献

Fifteen male SPF Wistar-Imamichi rats, aged 10, 27 and 44 weeks, that had been raised in the authors' laboratory, were used for the observation of copulatory behavior. Each male was given the opportunity to mate with a proestrous female. During a two hour period, standard measures of copulatory behavior, e.g., mounting, intromission and ejaculation, were documented by a video recording. The following results were obtained; the number of ejaculations in 10-week-old rats, over a two hour period, was 6 to 8. Males showed a subsequent post-ejaculatory interval. The males aged 27 weeks performed 3 to 4 times during the first hour, and then refrained from sexual activity. The copulatory behavior in males aged 44 weeks declined, as compared with that of their 10 and 27 weeks old counterparts.  相似文献

The effect of a single injection of testosterone on the number of stimuli required to trigger ejaculation and on copulatory behaviour was investigated in sexually experienced intact male rats. An intraperitoneal injection of 100 microgram free testosterone 1 h before testing facilitated the copulatory behaviour and decreased the number of mounts and intromissions needed for ejaculation; the latter effect was obtained in a test in which a constant interval was kept between each intromission.  相似文献

The penile reflexes of the rat were observed on interruption of the copulatory behavior sequence after intromission and ejaculation in the initial ejaculatory series, after the penultimate series, during sexual exhaustion, and during recovery from sexual exhaustion 24 and 72 hr later. These were compared to the reflexes of the normal rat in control conditions, to those of the male rat after spinal transection, and to those of the sexually rested and sexually exhausted male rat under cortical spreading depression (CSD). It was concluded that (1) the stimuli associated with copulation evoke disinhibition of the penile reflexes, these showing the short reflex latencies observed in the spinal animal. The release of the spinal mechanisms is lost within 30 min of the last copulatory event. CSD further inhibits reflex responsivity. (2) Stimuli associated with intromission provoke acceleration of the normal rhythmic presentation of reflexes seen in the normal and spinal rat, resulting in a decrease in the duration of intervals between reflex clusters and an increase in reflex number. This excitation decays within about 15 min after intromission. (3) The increase in degree of penile extension and percentage of penile flips after spinal transection suggests tonic inhibition of reflex intensity in the normal rat. The decrease in capacity to attain full erection with the approach of sexual exhaustion suggests an increase in this inhibition. This does not recover during a rest period but instead intensifies. CSD effects did not mimic the effects of spinal transection but instead depressed reflex excitability. The relationship of these changes to the copulatory behavior pattern is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of hyperprolactinemia on male copulatory behavior in adult male and female rats were studied. Hyperprolactinemia was induced by the transplantable purely prolactin-secreting tumor 7315b. Male rats were castrated and received testosterone-filled capsules of different sizes which induced normal and subnormal testosterone levels. After sexual training the rats of the experimental groups were inoculated with tumor 7315b. Three weeks after tumor-inoculation high prolactin levels (2000-30000 ng/ml) were found. During this hyperprolactinemia ejaculation latency increased significantly, while the mount frequency and intromission frequency remained unchanged. Only 9 out of 22 rats ejaculated 19 days after inoculation. Moreover, it appeared that the inhibitory effect of the tumor was as strong in the presence of normal (2.33 +/- 0.07 ng/ml) as in the presence of low (0.35 +/- 0.01 ng/ml) testosterone levels. The inhibitory effect of tumor 7315b on copulatory behavior was not influenced by adrenalectomy. In gonadectomized female rats bearing testosterone-filled capsules tumor 7315b induced prolactin levels of about 2000 ng/ml and an almost complete cessation of mounts and intromission patterns 4 weeks after tumor-inoculation. It was concluded that tumor 7315b causes a strong inhibitory effect on male copulatory behavior in male and female rats and that this effect is not influenced by the presence of normal or low testosterone levels or removal of the adrenals, suggesting a direct effect of prolactin on brain functions.  相似文献

The copulatory behavior of mammalian males is generally characterized by the male's repeated approaches to and mounting of the female. The mounting behavior can lead to intromission, and after several intromissions, an ejaculation occurs. Following ejaculation, the male refrains from sexual activity for a period of time, the so-called "post-ejaculatory interval (PEI)". Most mammals will return to copulate again. Both male hamsters and rats were used and each animal performed five series of copulations with a proestrous female. From the 1st to 5th series of copulations the hamsters showed a shorter PEI than the rats. In addition, the PEI of the hamsters showed no change after each ejaculation, while the rats gradually showed a significantly increased PEI during the five series of copulations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the sexual behavior of male rats kept under constant laboratory conditions for one entire year. A total of 213 sexually-inexperienced, male Wistar rats were maintained in controlled environmental conditions from birth. Depending the month in which they reached the age 3-month-old, the male rats were divided into 12 groups, one for each month of the year, and their sexual behavior was evaluated. Records of their sexual behavior were made from 09:00 to 11:00 hrs am. The following parameters were recorded: mount (latency and number), intromission (latency and number), ejaculation latency, and intromission rate. During the months of March, June, July and September, the rats showed lower mount and intromission latencies than in January, February, April, May and October-to-December. Similarly, in March, June, July and August they had higher copulatory efficiency than in January, February, April and December. Results suggest that male rats exposed to controlled environmental conditions could have endogenous mechanisms that regulate sexual behavior but are independent of seasonal environmental signals. The annual variability in the sexual behavior of male rats maintained under constant laboratory conditions should be considered when planning research and experiments.  相似文献

The electrocorticogram (ECoG) from the prefrontal cortex was simultaneously recorded with the accelerometric signals of pelvic thrusting performed by male rats during sexual behavior. The changes in the prefrontal ECoG were precisely correlated in time with well defined elements of male rat copulation. Principal component analysis allowed to identify three distinct bands of frequencies in the frontal ECoG: the absolute power (AP) of the 4–16 Hz band was increased in the 500-ms periods before, during, and after the execution of pelvic thrusting in mount, intromission and ejaculation responses; the AP of the 18–24 Hz band was selectively increased during the execution of pelvic thrusting at the three copulatory responses, whereas the AP of the 26–32 Hz band was increased only during the pelvic movements of mount and intromission responses. These results show that the electroencephalographic activity of the prefrontal cortex of the male rat is related to the performance of sexual behavior, supporting the concept that this cortical area is involved in the organization of sequential behaviors, as sexual behavior.  相似文献

Castrated androgen-insensitive rats exhibited mounting and intromission patterns in response to testosterone propionate (TP), estradiol benzoate (EB), or EB combined with dihydrotestosterone (DHT) treatment in adulthood. Treatment with DHT alone was ineffective in stimulating male mating behavior in the mutant rats. Since androgen-insensitive rats, like normal males, have the potential to show mounting behavior following hormone treatment in adulthood, the neural substrate underlying this behavior must be masculinized during development. The effectiveness of gonadal hormones in activating the entire copulatory sequence in castrated littermate males (King-Holtzman) was also examined. TP treatment induced mating behavior in the control rats. DHT also stimulated the complete copulatory pattern, although it was not as effective as TP. The administration of EB, however, did not induce ejaculation in control rats. These results do not support the hypothesis that the activation of male mating behavior by testosterone requires its metabolite estrogen (aromatization hypothesis).  相似文献

The copulatory behavior of sexually inexperienced male hamsters paired with natural proestrous females was observed between 1900 and 2000 hours under dim red light illumination. Each male was allowed 30 min to mate with a receptive female. Five out of 7 males showed at least one ejaculation within 30 min. Although the copulatory behavior of the above males was observed again, the activities of copulatory behavior did not facilitate.  相似文献

Androgenized females, Day 1 male castrates, normal males, and normal females were tested for mounting behavior as adults following TP administration (1 mg/day). Genital anesthetization was used to eliminate all intromission and ejaculation behavior. Results showed that sexually-naive normal males and androgenized females mounted significantly more then Day 1 male castrates, while the Day 1 male castrates mounted significantly more than normal females. Sexually-experienced normal males and androgenized females displayed a significant facilitation of mounting behavior as compared to the sexually-naive animals. Tests of masculine copulatory behavior without genital anesthetization also were conducted with androgenized females and normal males. In these tests, androgenized females were indistinguishable from normal males in all aspects of the complete masculine pattern. The present results provide evidence that during perinatal development androgen acts directly on neural systems which will later regulate adult masculine sexual behavior.  相似文献

Some aspects of reproductive function in the GnRH-deficient hypogonadal (hpg) mutant mouse can be restored by transplanting normal fetal brain tissue containing GnRH cells into the central nervous system of adult hpg mice. However, hpg males showing physiological response to the graft fail to display sexual behavior and are infertile. We hypothesized that the reproductive deficit of these males is due to insufficient perinatal exposure to testicular androgens as a consequence of the GnRH deficiency. To test this hypothesis we androgenized hpg males by giving them neonatal injections of testosterone propionate (TP). Controls consisted of hpg males not androgenized neonatally and of normal males. All three groups received a TP implant in adulthood, and their copulatory behavior and reproductive capability were recorded. In addition, other hpg males, not androgenized neonatally, received fetal brain transplants containing GnRH neurons and were also tested for copulatory behavior and reproductive capability before and after receiving a TP implant. Three of 8 neonatally androgenized hpg males expressed the full repertoire of male sexual behavior, including intromission and ejaculation, and sired several litters. Three of 7 control hpg males that were not androgenized neonatally but received TP implants in adulthood also displayed mounting and intromission, but there was no evidence of ejaculation, and these males failed to impregnate normal females. Of the 8 hpg males that responded to a fetal transplant with testicular growth, only 1 displayed mounting behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) on male copulatory behavior in rats. EGb 761 (1 mg/ml) induced significant production of testosterone (T) in rat Leydig cells in vitro. Its effects on sexual behavior were then tested in Long-Evans male rats after 7, 14, 21, or 28 days of oral gavage of vehicle (distilled water) or EGb 761 at doses of 10, 50, or 100 mg/kg. Administration of 50 mg/kg of EGb 761 for 28 days and of 100 mg/kg for 14 or 21 days significantly increased intromission frequency compared to controls on the same day. An increase in ejaculation frequency was seen after treatment with 50 mg/kg of EGb 761 for 14, 21, or 28 days when compared to either the control group on the same day or the same group on day 0. A reduction in ejaculation latency was only seen after administration of 50 mg/kg of EGb 761 for 14 days compared to the vehicle-treated group. After treatment for 28 days, no significant difference was seen in mount latency, intromission latency, serum T levels, reproductive organ weight, sperm number, or levels of the metabolite of dopamine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid in the brain with any dose of EGb 761, but significantly reduced serum prolactin levels and increased dopamine levels in the medial preoptic area and arcuate nucleus were seen at the dose of 50 mg/kg. These findings show that EGb 761 (especially at the dose of 50 mg/kg) enhances the copulatory behavior of male rats and suggest that the dopaminergic system, which regulates prolactin secretion, may be involved in the facilitatory effect of EGb 761.  相似文献

It is not clear whether males in all mammalian species adjust their copulatory behavior when faced with risk of sperm competition (RSC). Previous work on meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, indicated that males increase their sperm expenditure but not the number of ejaculations in the presence of odors of a conspecific male. The present study follows up on this work and asks whether male meadow voles modify any aspect of their copulatory behavior when they face a RSC. We examined 46 variables of copulatory behavior and found that the presence of odors from a conspecific male did not affect any of these variables. Thus, male meadow voles, unlike some other species of mammals, do not adjust their copulatory behavior when exposed to cues associated with an elevated RSC.  相似文献

本文研究了皮质酮对雄性根田鼠交配行为的作用。实验个体分别注射0.10 ug/ g体重、0. 60 ug / g体重和1.00 ug/ g体重剂量的皮质酮,1 h后测定每只雄性根田鼠的交配行为。结果显示,3 个处理组动物具有射精能力的个体比率及其爬跨、抽动和射精潜伏期与对照组动物相比均无显著差异,爬跨和抽动频次也无显著变化。不同处理组个体的血浆睾酮含量无显著差异。因此,皮质酮没有影响雄性根田鼠的交配行为和性激素的分泌。该结果提示,哺乳动物在急性应激条件下所分泌的皮质酮可能不参与对性行为的调控。  相似文献

利用雄性结扎不育方法研究雄性结扎不育对布氏田鼠交配行为和繁殖的影响。结果表明:雄性结扎不育后不影响布氏田鼠雌雄两性的交配行为;不育雄性的存在对雌性的正常交配产生了干扰,降低了雌性的有效交配次数,并导致雌性怀孕率和产仔数的下降。结果一方面说明结扎不育雄性方法可用于布氏田鼠的不育控制研究,另一方面为不育后的竞争性繁殖干扰假设提供了实验证据。  相似文献

I observed seven pairs of sexually mature, captiveGalago moholi during the females’ ovarian cycles to determine the pattern of male copulatory behavior and its relationship to female receptivity. In this species, a copulatory lock was not apparent, a variety of thrusting patterns was displayed, and the male was capable of ejaculating following a single mount and intromission and may have ejaculated more than once during the 30-min test. Male mating indices did not differ significantly on consecutive days of the mating period, though declines in certain mating latencies on the second and third days of mating suggested increased female receptivity. Mating indices did not differ notably between the first and the second copulation within a test, though both showed some differences compared to the third copulation. InG. moholi, male copulatory behavior is typical of a prosimian species with a dispersed — nongregarious — mating system, in which copulation has a single prolonged intromission that extends into the postejaculatory period. This is characteristic of species in which more than one male has access to an estrous female.  相似文献

Early, anecdotal reports of patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) sexual behavior suggested that these primates were series-mount copulators. In 1975, limited evidence was presented in favor of single-mount copulations as the species-typical pattern for patas. The situation remained confused, however, as indicated by statements in a recent review article. This paper adds to our knowledge of patas sexuality by presenting quantitative data on the copulatory behavior of two additional adult males. Both males usually gave pelvic thrusts to intravaginal ejaculation once they had mounted a female and gained intromission. Mounts without ejaculation were clearly failed attempts at copulation, rather than segments of a stereotyped series-mount pattern. All of the available quantitative data indicate that the species-typical mating pattern for patas monkeys is copulation in a single mount.  相似文献

The seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia Baill. are rich in 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), a direct precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. In the present study we investigated the influence of the plant extract on male sexual behavior. The seed extract was orally administered to Sprague-Dawley male rats at three dose levels (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) both acutely and subchronically (daily for 9 days). Mating test with receptive female rats was performed 60 min after the acute treatment or the last dose when repetitively administered. Mount, intromission and ejaculation latencies and post-ejaculatory interval were recorded. Food intake and body weight were measured over the 9-day period of treatment. Microdialysis technique was used to detect the extracellular levels of serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in rat brain following the acute administration of the extract dosed at 100 mg/kg. The acute treatment significantly increased mount latency (at any dosage), intromission and ejaculation latencies (at 100 mg/kg) and post-ejaculatory interval (at 50 and 100 mg/kg). On the contrary the subchronic treatment failed to exert a significant influence on copulatory behavior. The daily administration of the extract dosed at 50 and 100 mg/kg for 9 days significantly reduced food intake and body weight. Finally in the microdialysis experiments we found a dramatic increase in 5-HT and its metabolite 5-HIAA.  相似文献

Male displacement of copulatory (sperm) plugs from female vaginas provides further evidence for sperm competition in ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta), a gregarious prosimian species with a multimale, multifemale mating system. During two mating seasons, I studied two groups of free-ranging ring-tailed lemurs on St. Catherines Island, GA, USA. I observed 22 mating pairs in which males achieved penile intromission. Copulatory plug displacement by males occurred in 9 cases. Plugs were displaced during copulation by male penes upon withdrawl following deep vaginal thrusting. In every case of copulatory plug displacement, the male displacing a plug mated to ejaculation with the estrous female. In a mating system in which females typically mate with more than one male during estrous, often in succession, copulatory plug displacement may function to disrupt or preclude other males' successful insemination of estrous females. The effects of sperm plug displacement on paternity in Lemur catta are unknown, as no study had heretofore documented copulatory plug displacement in this species. The first-male mating advantage suggested for Lemur catta should be re-evaluated where mating order is known, and copulatory plug displacement during mating, or lack thereof, is identified. Because there is a tendency for first-mating males to mate-guard for longer periods of time in Lemur catta, the latency period between the first mate's ejaculation and that of subsequent mates may be an important determinant of male fertilization success.  相似文献
