We report an investigation into the impact of temperature and illumination on in vitro symbiotic and asymbiotic germination of the threatened taxon Caladenia huegelii, and three other orchid spp. namely—Caladenia latifolia, Microtis media and Pterostylis sanguinea, all species from south-west Western Australia, a recognized biodiversity hotspot. High symbiotic germination on oatmeal agar (OMA + fungal symbionts specific to each species) was recorded in three species in continuous dark incubation i.e. C. huegelii seeds (98 % germination at 25 °C), and M. media and P. sanguinea (93 and 98 % respectively at 20 °C). Highest symbiotic germination for C. latifolia (100 %) was observed at 15 and 20 °C under light treatment (12/12 h light/dark). Low temperature incubation (10 °C) significantly suppressed symbiotic germination/development of seedlings across all species. Asymbiotic media treatments assessed (OMA minus fungal symbionts, Pa5 and ½ MS), failed to stimulate any germination with C. latifolia seeds at 20 °C in either light or dark treatments after an 8 week incubation period. Seeds of M. media sown onto ½ MS medium resulted in higher germination in all developmental stages (3–5) in dark treatment than OMA and Pa5. Seeds of P. sanguinea sown onto ½ MS medium resulted in higher overall germination in all developmental stages (3–5) in light and dark incubation compared to OMA and Pa5. OMA supported the highest asymbiotic germination (100 %) in both light and dark incubation with M. media (only to stage 3) but did not support germination and development with other spp. tested. Caladenia huegelii seeds reached developmental Stage 3 (i.e. germinated), but only on Pa5 medium and only at a relatively low rate in either light (2.6 %) or dark (2.1 %). Germination was higher and development of seedlings faster overall in all test species in symbiotic compared with asymbiotic media treatments. P. sanguinea seeds demonstrated the best response (among species tested) to asymbiotic germination on ½ MS with 40–53 % of germinated seeds spread over developmental stages 3–5 in light or dark incubation (at 20 °C) respectively. Illumination had no effect on fungal symbiont growth across all species, however incubation temperature treatments (10, 15, 20 and 25 °C) affected fungal growth rate. Growth of the fungal symbionts of C. huegelii, M. media and C. latifolia demonstrated significantly lower activity at 10 °C, but the cumulative radial growth rate of the P. sanguinea fungal symbiont reached 64 cm2 after only 2 weeks at all temperatures tested, including 10 °C. The study highlights differences in symbiotic and aysmbiotic germination and early protocorm development in vitro between co-occurring herbaceous terrestrial Australian orchid taxa in response to variations in basal media, temperature and light.  相似文献

Responses of seed germination to air temperature, water potential, light, and smoke were studied in the laboratory for seeds of the invasive bunch grass Pennisetum ciliare (L.) Link (syn. Cenchrus ciliare L.; buffel grass). First introduced to North America during the mid-twentieth Century for establishing pastures, this African bunch grass has become an invasive species of concern. Across all the experiments conducted, a low germination was observed for P. ciliare fascicles that never exceeded 30 % at 21 days after sowing. Optimal day/night air temperatures for germination, controlled with an environmental chamber, were 25/15 and 30/20 °C, while extreme temperatures of 15/5 and 45/35 °C inhibited germination. By sowing seeds of P. ciliare under different water potentials, created with aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol, an optimum of ?0.03 MPa led to the highest germination, while no germination was observed at ?1.0 MPa. Monochromatic optical filters were utilized to germinate seeds under various wavelengths, of which red (650 nm) and far red (730 nm) led to the highest germination. In addition, seeds that were incubated in the dark had higher germination than those incubated under white light. Incubation in smoke water, which can stimulate germination of pyrophytic species, resulted in a marginal inhibition of germination compared with imbibition with distilled water.  相似文献

Ruderal plants can grow in polluted areas, but little is known about heavy metal accumulation and distribution in them. Here Ni and Zn accumulation, distribution and effects were investigated in Lepidium ruderale and Capsella bursa-pastoris grown at 5–30 µM Ni(NO3)2 or 10–80 µM Zn(NO3)2. Metal contents were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and tissue distribution of metals was studied histochemically. Ni was more toxic than Zn for both plants. When metal-induced growth-inhibiting effects were compared at various metal concentrations in solution, L. ruderale was more tolerant to Ni, whereas C. bursa-pastoris to Zn. However, when compared at similar Zn or Ni contents in roots, root growth of C. bursa-pastoris was more tolerant than that of L. ruderale. On the contrary, at similar Zn or Ni contents in shoots, shoot growth of L. ruderale was more tolerant. Both plants are excluders maintaining low metal levels in shoots. In roots, Ni located in protoplasts while Zn was also detected in cell walls. Metal accumulation in root apices resulted in growth inhibition. Ni accumulation in root cortex constrained metal translocation into central cylinder and then to shoots, where it located only in conductive tissues and epidermis, particularly in leaf trichomes of C. bursa-pastoris. Zn was translocated to shoots more actively and distributed in all shoot tissues, being accumulated in leaf vascular bundles and epidermis. To conclude, these patterns of Ni and Zn distribution are aimed at metal sequestration in roots and leaf epidermis, thus keeping mesophyll from metal penetration and pigment degradation.  相似文献

The marine red algae Grateloupia is the largest genus in the family Halymeniaceae and widely distributed from tropical to warm temperate regions of the world. In the genus Grateloupia, especially G. elliptica and G. lanceolata have common features of bladelike thalli with leather in texture and cruciately divided tetrasporangia. Due to this similar morphology, G. elliptica and G. lanceolata are frequently confused and resulted in considerable difficulty distinguishing these two taxa. We have reassessed the relationships between two species using molecular identification including plastid rbcL and mitochondrial COI genes to more accurately define their genetic diversity owing to the confusion of identification. As a result, the chloroplast-encoded rbcL sequence analyses support the distinction of two species, G. elliptica and G. lanceolata collected from Jeju Island, Korea and Japan at the species level, with interspecific divergence of 3.7-4.6 %. The genetic diversity of COI gene within species are estimated to be 0–0.3 % in G. elliptica and 0–1.0 % in G. lanceolata, respectively. The effectiveness of mtDNA COI barcoding in the identification for two species demonstrates in this study.  相似文献

The indigenous forage grasses Lasiurus scindicus and Panicum turgidum are candidate species for the restoration of degraded desert rangelands. The impact of five dormancy regulating chemicals on overcoming salinity-induced germination inhibition was assessed under the best germination conditions in the two species. Seeds were germinated in a series of NaCl concentrations: 0–200 mM NaCl for P. turgidum, and 0–300 mM NaCl for L. scindicus. Lasiurus scindicus seeds were more tolerant to salinity than those of P. turgidum. Twenty percent of P. turgidum seeds germinated in 100 mM NaCl and none in the higher levels, but 47.5% and 8.8% of L. scindicus seeds germinated in 100 and 200 mM NaCl, respectively. The five studied chemicals (fusicoccin, GA3, kinetin, nitrate and thiourea) did not succeed in improving germination of non-saline treated seeds of the two species, compared to the control, except thiourea in P. turgidum. The salinity-induced germination inhibition in P. turgidum was completely alleviated by the application of gibberellic acid (GA3), partially alleviated by the application of fusicoccin, kinetin and thiourea, but not affected by nitrate. In L. scindicus, the germination inhibition was completely alleviated by fusicoccin, GA3, nitrate and thiourea, but partially alleviated by kinetin. For using the two grass species in restoration of degraded rangelands affected by higher salinity, the results suggest using fusicoccin, GA3, nitrate and thiourea with L. scindicus and GA3 with P. turgidum seeds as a preseeding treatment can overcome the problem of reduced germination.  相似文献

β-Pinene, an oxygenated monoterpene, is abundantly found in the environment and widely occurring in plants as a constituent of essential oils. We investigated the phytotoxicity of β-pinene against two grassy (Phalaris minor, Echinochloa crus-galli) and one broad-leaved (Cassia occidentalis) weeds in terms of germination and root and shoot growth. β-Pinene (0.02–0.80 mg/ml) inhibited the germination, root length, and shoot length of test weeds in a dose–response manner. The inhibitory effect of β-pinene was greater in grassy weeds and on root growth than on shoot growth. β-Pinene (0.04–0.80 mg/ml) reduced the root length in P. minor, E. crus-galli, and C. occidentalis over that in the control by 58–60, 44–92, and 26–85 %, respectively. In contrast, shoot length was reduced over the control by 45–97 % in P. minor, 48–78 % in E. crus-galli, and 11–75 % in C. occidentalis at similar concentrations. Further, we examined the impact of β-pinene on membrane integrity in P. minor as one of the possible mechanisms of action. Membrane integrity was evaluated in terms of lipid peroxidation, conjugated diene content, electrolyte leakage, and the activity of lipoxygenases (LOX). β-Pinene (≥0.04 mg/ml) enhanced electrolyte leakage by 23–80 %, malondialdehyde content by 15–67 %, hydrogen peroxide content by 9–39 %, and lipoxygenases activity by 38–383 % over that in the control. It indicated membrane peroxidation and loss of membrane integrity that could be the primary target of β-pinene. Even the enhanced (9–62 %) activity of protecting enzymes, peroxidases (POX), was not able to protect the membranes from β-pinene (0.04-0.20 mg/ml)-induced toxicity. In conclusion, our results show that β-pinene inhibits root growth of the tested weed species through disruption of membrane integrity as indicated by enhanced peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, and LOX activity despite the upregulation of POX activity.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Mycorrhizal specialization has been shown to limit recruitment capacity in orchids, but an increasing number of orchids are being documented as invasive or weed-like. The reasons for this proliferation were examined by investigating mycorrhizal fungi and edaphic correlates of Microtis media, an Australian terrestrial orchid that is an aggressive ecosystem and horticultural weed.

Methods

Molecular identification of fungi cultivated from M. media pelotons, symbiotic in vitro M. media seed germination assays, ex situ fungal baiting of M. media and co-occurring orchid taxa (Caladenia arenicola, Pterostylis sanguinea and Diuris magnifica) and soil physical and chemical analyses were undertaken.

Key Results

It was found that: (1) M. media associates with a broad taxonomic spectrum of mycobionts including Piriformospora indica, Sebacina vermifera, Tulasnella calospora and Ceratobasidium sp.; (2) germination efficacy of mycorrhizal isolates was greater for fungi isolated from plants in disturbed than in natural habitats; (3) a higher percentage of M. media seeds germinate than D. magnifica, P. sanguinea or C. arenicola seeds when incubated with soil from M. media roots; and (4) M. media–mycorrhizal fungal associations show an unusual breadth of habitat tolerance, especially for soil phosphorus (P) fertility.

Conclusions

The findings in M. media support the idea that invasive terrestrial orchids may associate with a diversity of fungi that are widespread and common, enhance seed germination in the host plant but not co-occurring orchid species and tolerate a range of habitats. These traits may provide the weedy orchid with a competitive advantage over co-occurring orchid species. If so, invasive orchids are likely to become more broadly distributed and increasingly colonize novel habitats.  相似文献

The effect of arsenic on leaf photosynthetic rate, growth responses, and accumulation capability of Isatis cappadocica Desv., a Brassica collected from Iranian arsenic-contaminated mine spoils and control populations, was investigated. Both populations of I. cappadocica were considerably more tolerant than the reference Brassica species (Descurainia sophia). The 1,000 μM arsenate exposure inhibited root growth completely in D. sophia, but only by 50 and 40 % in the nonmine and mine populations of I. cappadocica, respectively. Furthermore, the chlorophyll contents of both populations of I. cappadocica were not statistically different, especially when plants were exposed to 5–800 μM As. The chlorophyll a fluorescence kinetics (F v/F m) and electron transfer rate values of treated I. cappadocica populations remained unaffected, indicating normal photosynthetic efficiency and strength of plants in the presence of arsenic. After 28 days of exposure to 1,300 μM As, shoot arsenic concentrations of mine and nonmine populations reached 310 and 345 mg kg?1, respectively, with the arsenic transfer factor and bioaccumulation greater than 1.0. According to these results, it was shown that I. cappadocica had strong tolerance to and the capability to hyperaccumulate arsenic; therefore, it is a potential As hyperaccumulator.  相似文献

Seeds from ten terrestrial orchid species, nine from the south‐west Australian biodiversity hotspot (Caladenia arenicola, Caladenia flava, Caladenia huegelii, Diuris laxiflora, Microtis media ssp. media, Pterostylis recurva, Pterostylis sanguinea, Thelymitra crinita and Thelymitra macrophylla) and one from south‐east Australia (Diuris fragrantissima), were placed into experimental storage to assess their relative longevity and likely optimal conditions for long‐term conservation seed banking. Seeds from all species were desiccation tolerant, germinating after drying at 23% relative humidity (C. arenicola, C. huegelii, P. sanguinea and T. macrophylla) or 5% relative humidity (C. flava, D. laxiflora, M. media ssp. media, P. recurva and T. crinita) at 23 °C. From automatedly determined moisture adsorption and desorption isotherms at 23 °C, these equate to tolerance of drying to 0.03–0.06 g water g?1 dry weight or 0.013–0.028 g water g?1 dry weight, respectively. Results of storage experiments at a range of moisture contents and temperatures suggest conventional seed bank storage at ?18 °C after equilibration at c. 23% relative humidity (at 23 °C) may be suitable for most of the species, although there was higher germination of P. recurva seeds stored at ?80 °C and of M. media ssp. media seeds equilibrated at 75% relative humidity. However, there was considerable variation in germination of seeds sampled after different storage periods, making it difficult to identify optimal storage conditions definitively. Results of comparative longevity storage experiments at 60% relative humidity and 40 °C suggest seeds from these orchid species are short‐lived compared with non‐orchid species, and with Australian species in particular. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 164 , 26–41.  相似文献

Background and aims

Across the world, about 264 million ha forest plantations are monospecific. This practice has been found to cause site productivity and soil fertility decline in the regions where forests have been harvested several times. To mitigate these problems, mixed-species plantations, especially with broadleaved and coniferous species, are preferred. Understanding the effects of introducing broadleaved tree in monospecific coniferous plantation on ecosystem carbon (C) storage and soil organic C (SOC) stability is critical to improve our understanding of forest C sequestration and C cycle.

Methods

Plots were established in subtropical plantations with a randomized block design to examine the influence of introducing Michelia macclurei trees into pure Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation on biomass C storage, SOC storage of total, labile, and recalcitrant fractions (0–40 cm depth), and SOC stability.

Results

Introducing M. macclurei trees increased biomass C by 17.9 % and 14.2 % compared with monospecific C. lanceolata and M. macclurei plantations, respectively. Storage of different SOC fractions was not significantly different between monospecific C. lanceolata and mixed plantations. SOC stability in bulk soils was not affected, although it differed in 10–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil depth among three plantations.

Conclusions

Mixed species plantations can increase C sequestration, and in the subtropical forest ecosystem examined this was mainly attributed to an increase in biomass C.

Detailed pollen analytical investigations at a Neolithic lake dwelling site on Lake Chalain, Jura, France, show very characteristic variation in the Plantago lanceolata and P. major/media pollen curves in the period during which settlements are recorded (3030–2630 cal. B.C.). At first, P. lanceolata is the more important taxon but P. major/media representation gradually rises, to become the more important taxon in the uppermost settlement phase. After considering the present day ecology and phytosociology of the Plantago species in question, i.e. P. lanceolata, P. major and P. media, and the available archaeozoological and archaeological information, it is suggested that the changes in the representation of these two pollen taxa are the result of a change in the farming economy, at ca. 2800 cal. B.C., which involved a substantial rise in the numbers of domesticated grazing animals and more intensive land use.  相似文献

Galerucella placida Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a promising biocontrol agent of the rice-field weed Polygonum orientale L. (Polygonaceae) in India and Bangladesh. The longevity of G. placida adults was related with nutrients and antinutrients of young, mature and senescent leaves of P. orientale. Mature leaves of P. orientale had higher level of nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nitrogen and amino acids) and lower level of antinutrients (phenols and flavonols) compared to young and senescent leaves. Higher level of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nitrogen, amino acids including water content, and lower phenol and flavonol content of mature leaves had influenced higher survival of G. placida. Total larval developmental and pupal periods were 26.27 ± 0.45 SE and 7.06 ± 0.17 SE days on mature weed leaves, respectively; whilst adult males and females lived for 52.15 ± 0.33 SE and 58.0 ± 0.38 SE days on mature leaves, respectively. Fecundity of individual G. placida was 133.3 ± 3.2 SE eggs during life time. The net reproductive rate, generation time, intrinsic rate of increase, finite rate of increase and doubling time were 66.675, 27.5376, 0.1525, 1.2502 and 4.5452 days, respectively, under laboratory conditions (27 ± 0.5 °C, 12L:12D photoperiod, 65 ± 5% RH).  相似文献

Biodiversity conservation programmes are underpinned by seed banking following drying to low water contents (WC), and supported by both the assessment and prediction of seed viability over time. The means of judging viability is thus crucial to the comprehension of seed vigour. We selected seeds of three species and one hybrid in the Salicaceae likely to have variation in tolerance to drying, processing and storage, including in relation to cryobanking, and compared survival growth as radicle emergence (germination) and normal seedling production. With three seed lots of Salix gracilistyla, air-drying to 8–10 % WC enhanced seed survival after 40 days’ storage at 5 °C as compared with non-treated seeds at 14–20 % WC. Four seed lots of Populus alba × P. glandulosa showed equally high germination (88–100 %) and proportions of normal seedlings (81–99 %) when stored at 5 °C for 7–10 weeks. Among seven seed lots of S. gracilistyla, two groups with different storage behaviour could be statistically distinguished with normal seedling production ranging from 0 to 45 % after storage at 5 °C for 13 weeks. Seed tolerance to WC manipulation and cryopreservation was very variable among species and seed lots. Seed lots of S. hallaisanensis and S. gracilistyla with ~80 % germination survived cryopreservation at 10 % WC, but were sensitive to lower WCs. In contrast, Populus seeds had greater desiccation tolerance combined with cryopreservation capability. With seed lots of all species and hybrids, cryopreservation had little effect on viability unless the high moisture freezing limit had been exceeded (~10–20 % WC, depending on seed lot). However, under all conditions of handling (drying, rehydration, storage at 5 °C or cryopreservation) using germination as the only indicator of viability over-estimated survival compared with normal seedling production.  相似文献

Growth of Plantago lanceolata L., P. media L. and P. coronopus L. was followed at two levels of mineral nutrition (low-salt and high-salt). In addition the response of transfer of plants from low-salt conditions to high-salt conditions and vice versa was studied. Growth of these Plantago species was not much affected by the nutritional level. P. coronopus showed the least dependence on the level of mineral nutrition. The Ca2+- and Mg2+-stimulated ATPase activity of microsomal preparations of the roots of Plantago was also studied. A pH optimum at pH 6.5 was observed in all species, together with a relatively high ATPase activation by Mg2+ in P. lanceolata, by Ca2+ in P. media, and by both ions in P. coronopus. The specific activity of the ATPases was highest in preparations from low-salt roots. The three species all occur in relatively nutrient-poor habitats, but they are at the same time particularly adapted to circumneutral soils (P. lanceolata), to Ca2+-rich soils (P. media) and to alternating levels of mineral nutrition (P. coronopus). The properties of the ATPases (Km, Vmax, protein content) and the growth are discussed in relation to these ecological properties of the species.  相似文献

The effects of dry heat, wet heat, charred wood and smoke on the germination of dormant soil‐stored seeds from a Eucalyptus woodland in western Victoria were tested by using a glasshouse seed‐bank germination experiment. Seedling density, species richness and species composition were compared between replicated treated and control samples. A total of 5922 seedlings, comprising 59 plant species, was recorded from the soil samples over a period of 150 days. While a few species dominated (including Centrolepis strigosa, Wahlenbergia gracilenta and Ixodia achillaeoides), 26 species were represented by fewer than five seedlings and 18 species were restricted to single treatment types. With the exception of charred wood, all treatments led to a significant increase in seed germination relative to the control. The highest number of germinants was obtained for the smoke treatment, with a mean (± SE) of 12 547 ± 449 seedlings m–2. Heat treatments yielded intermediate densities, with means (± SE) varying between 7445 ± 234 and 9133 ± 445 seedlings m–2. In comparison with the estimates of seed‐bank sizes from other fire‐prone ecosystems, these densities are high. Species richness differed significantly among treatments. Highest mean richness was recorded in the smoke treatment and lowest for the control and charred wood treatments. There were significant differences in seed‐bank species composition between treatment types based on analysis of similarity (Anosim) using Bray–Curtis similarity. While heat was a specific requirement for triggering germination in hard‐seeded species (e.g. Fabaceae), smoke was the most effective trigger for species from a broad range of other families. The potentially confounding effect of physical and chemical mechanisms of germination stimulation in heated bulk soil samples is raised as an issue requiring further investigation in relation to the role of smoke as a germination trigger.  相似文献

It has been widely advocated that smoke–water application to topsoil can substantially improve restoration success by enhancing seed germination. This is despite few studies having tested the effects of smoke–water on seedling emergence in field-scale restoration trials. Here we report the effects of applying a commercially available smoke solution (Regen 2000®), at rates between 0 and 100 mL m 2, on jarrah forest sites being restored after bauxite mining in the southwest of Western Australia. Smoke solutions stimulated the seed germination of a range of species in laboratory experiments. In addition, smoke–water stimulated germination of Stylidium affine seeds sown directly into the first field experiment. However, apart from the effect on sown S. affine seeds, smoke–water application had no effect on subsequent seedling numbers, species richness or the relative proportion of seedlings in different growth-form categories in either of the two field experiments. These findings suggest that smoke–water application does not always ensure enhanced restoration outcomes.  相似文献

Abandonment and fragmentation are the primary causes of decline for many light-demanding grassland species in the modern agricultural landscape. In order to maintain a flora rich in such species, design of management practices based upon knowledge of life-history consequences following management shifts is essential. In this study, we investigated the demography of the perennial grassland species Plantago lanceolata for 4 years in one mulched site and two abandoned sites to compare how the two treatments influenced population dynamics. Compared to abandonment, mulching had a small but positive effect on the population growth rate (λ) of P. lanceolata. In both the mulched and the abandoned sites, growth and stasis among the largest plants contributed most strongly to λ, while the contribution of fecundity was negligible in both treatments. λ of P. lanceolata varied more between years than between treatments, most notably because λ values below unity were observed in the abandoned sites in a 1-year period that included a severe winter. The population of the mulched site consisted of larger ramets and had higher clonal growth rates than the populations of the abandoned sites. This explains the apparently higher resilience to unfavorable climatic conditions in the mulched site. We conclude that management by mulching is better than abandonment for the long-term persistence of P. lanceolata. However, due to low recruitment also in the mulched site, even mulching may be insufficient for P. lanceolata to persist over long time periods.  相似文献

Summary The production of nitrate in an old established dune grassland soil and its uptake by plants was studied by comparing amounts of mineral nitrogen and numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the rhizosphere on the one hand, and on the other accumulated nitrate and levels of nitrate reductase (NaR) of individual plants of three Plantago species,i. e., P. major, P. lanceolata andP. coronopus. For these three Plantago species andP. media basal levels of NaR in the absence of nitrate were determined in plants grown in culture solutions. The basal NaR levels ofP. major andP. media (species occurring on nutrient-rich soils) were significantly higher than those ofP. lanceolata andP. coronopus (species found on nutrient-poor soils). NaR activity increased in the presence of nitrate and was suppressed by ammonium. From the numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the rhizosphere and NaR activity in the leaves it was concluded that nitrate was produced in the root environments of the three Plantago species and that the compound was taken up by the plants. NaR activities and numbers of nitrifying bacteria were higher for individuals ofP. major than for those ofP. lanceolata andP. coronopus. No correlation was found between the ammonium levels and the numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the soil, and no indications of inhibition of nitrifying bacteria in the rhizosphere were obtained. For individuals ofP. lanceolata a correlation was found between the numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the soil and NaR activity in the leaves. The results are discussed in relation to the ecological habitats of the three species.Grassland Species Research Group Publication No.38.  相似文献

Here we report that a synthesised form of a naturally occurring chemical (a butenolide, 3-methyl-2H-furo[2,3-c]pyran-2-one) found in smoke can stimulate seedling emergence of the economically important weed species Avena fatua L. (Poaceae), Arctotheca calendula (L.) Levyns (Asteraceae), Brassica tournefortii Gouan (Brassicaceae), and Raphanus raphanistrum L. (Brassicaceae) under field conditions at rates equivalent to 2–20 g/ha a.i. The butenolide also stimulates germination of freshly collected seeds from wild populations of these species, as well as those of Sisymbrium orientale L. (Brassicaceae), Hordeum leporinum Link (Poaceae) and Echium plantagineum L. (Boraginaceae) under laboratory conditions, consistently greater than that of smoke water. Experiments using B. tournefortii seeds collected from several locations across Western Australia and in different growing seasons found that these factors significantly influence the butenolide response, implying a role of the maternal environment in seed germination/dormancy characteristics. This research highlights the potential of butenolide as an agent for broad acre weed control and land restoration.  相似文献
