The ubiquitous, biogenic trace gas dimethylsulfide (DMS) represents the largest natural source of atmospheric sulfur. Given DMS involvement in cloud formation and climate, understanding and parameterizing the oceanic DMS source and cycling processes is a necessary challenge. We report DMS cycling rates from microzooplankton dilution grazing experiments conducted monthly during 1 year in coastal northwestern Mediterranean waters. Concentrations of DMS, its algal precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSPt) and chlorophyll a (Chla) ranged 0.9–11 nmol L?1, 10–71 nmol L?1, and 0.2–1.5 µg L?1, respectively. By comparing the growth and stock production rates of the DMSP-producing algae to those of total phytoplankton, we estimated that 3?±?4% (range 0.4–12%) of the carbon primary production was invested in DMSP biosynthesis. Microzooplankton grazing rates on DMSP-producing phytoplankton (0.46–1.45 day?1) were generally higher than those on the bulk assemblage (0.08–0.99 day?1), except in midsummer months. This could have been due to the smaller size of most DMSP producers. There was no indication of micrograzer selection against DMSP-containing phytoplankton, since they were not grazed at lower rates than the bulk phytoplankton assemblage. A proportion of 6–20% of the grazed DMSP was converted into DMS, and this grazing-derived production accounted for 32–96% of dark gross DMS production by the total community. Bacteria consumed daily?≤?14–100% of the gross DMS production, which resulted in biological DMS turnover times of 1 to?≥?10 days. Throughout the year, grazing-mediated DMS production explained 73% of the variance in the DMS concentration, implying that microzooplankton grazing plays a major role in controlling DMS concentration in surface waters across a broad range of environmental and productivity conditions in the Mediterranean Sea. These findings should help improve the representation of herbivore grazing in prognostic models to predict the distribution and dynamics of the global DMS emission and its feedback response to changing climate.  相似文献

The algal osmolyte, dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP), is abundant in the surface oceans and is the major precursor of dimethyl sulphide (DMS), a gas involved in global climate regulation. Here, we report results from an in situ Lagrangian study that suggests a link between the microbially driven fluxes of dissolved DMSP (DMSPd) and specific members of the bacterioplankton community in a North Sea coccolithophore bloom. The bacterial population in the bloom was dominated by a single species related to the genus Roseobacter , which accounted for 24% of the bacterioplankton numbers and up to 50% of the biomass. The abundance of the Roseobacter cells showed significant paired correlation with DMSPd consumption and bacterioplankton production, whereas abundances of other bacteria did not. Consumed DMSPd (28 nM day−1) contributed 95% of the sulphur and up to 15% of the carbon demand of the total bacterial populations, suggesting the importance of DMSP as a substrate for the Roseobacter -dominated bacterioplankton. In dominating DMSPd flux, the Roseobacter species may exert a major control on DMS production. DMSPd turnover rate was 10 times that of DMS (2.7 nM day−1), indicating that DMSPd was probably the major source of DMS, but that most of the DMSPd was metabolized without DMS production. Our study suggests that single species of bacterioplankton may at times be important in metabolizing DMSP and regulating the generation of DMS in the sea.  相似文献

Bacterial degradation of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) represents one of the main sources of the climatically–active trace gas dimethylsulfide (DMS) in the upper ocean. Short-term enrichment studies to stimulate specific pathways of DMSP degradation in oligotrophic waters from the Sargasso Sea were used to explore regulatory connections between the different bacterial DMSP degradation steps and determine potential biological controls on DMS formation in the open ocean. Experiments were conducted with surface water at the BATS station in the western North Atlantic Ocean. We added selected organic substrates (25 nmol L?1 final concentration) to induce different steps of DMSP degradation in the microbial community, and then measured DMSP dynamics (assimilation and turnover rates), DMS yields (using 35sulfur-DMSP tracer), and bacterial production rates. In most treatments, the main fate of consumed S-DMSP was excretion as a non-volatile S product. 35S-DMSP tracer turnover rates (accumulation + assimilation + excretion of transformed products as DMS or others) increased upon addition of DMSP and glucose, but not acrylate, methymercaptopropionate (MMPA), methanethiol, DMS or glycine betaine. DMS yields from 35S-DMSP never exceeded 16 % except in a short term DMSP enrichment, for which the yield reached 45 % (±17 %). Results show that availability of non-sulfur containing labile C sources (glucose, acrylate) decreased bacterial DMS production while stimulating bacterial heterotrophic production, and suggest an influence of bacterial sulfur demand in controlling DMS-yielding pathways. However, regulatory effects on 35S-DMSP fate were not consistent across all reduced sulfur compounds (i.e., methanethiol or MMPA), and may reflect alternate roles of DMSP as a bacterial energy source and osmolyte.  相似文献

Seasonal pulses of phytoplankton drive seasonal cycles of carbon fixation and particle sedimentation, and might condition recruitment success in many exploited species. Taking advantage of long‐term series of remotely sensed chlorophyll a (1998–2012), we analyzed changes in phytoplankton seasonality in the North Atlantic Ocean. Phytoplankton phenology was analyzed based on a probabilistic characterization of bloom incidence. This approach allowed us to detect changes in the prevalence of different seasonal cycles and, at the same time, to estimate bloom timing and magnitude taking into account uncertainty in bloom detection. Deviations between different sensors stressed the importance of a prolonged overlap between successive missions to ensure a correct assessment of phenological changes, as well as the advantage of semi‐analytical chlorophyll algorithms over empirical ones to reduce biases. Earlier and more intense blooms were detected in the subpolar Atlantic, while advanced blooms of less magnitude were common in the Subtropical gyre. In the temperate North Atlantic, spring blooms advanced their timing and decreased in magnitude, whereas fall blooms delayed and increased their intensity. At the same time, the prevalence of locations with a single autumn/winter bloom or with a bimodal seasonal cycle increased, in consonance with a poleward expansion of subtropical conditions. Changes in bloom timing and magnitude presented a clear signature of environmental factors, especially wind forcing, although changes on incident photosynthetically active radiation and sea surface temperature were also important depending on latitude. Trends in bloom magnitude matched changes in mean chlorophyll a during the study period, suggesting that seasonal peaks drive long‐term trends in chlorophyll a concentration. Our results link changes in North Atlantic climate with recent trends in the phenology of phytoplankton, suggesting an intensification of these impacts in the near future.  相似文献

Despite the global importance of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP)/dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and their role in climate regulation, little is known about the mechanisms of their production and storage in Phaeocystis sp., a major contributor of DMS in polar areas. Phaeocystis secretes polymer microgels, by regulated exocytosis, remaining in condensed phase while stored in secretory vesicles ( Chin et al. 2004 ). In secretory cells, vesicles also store small molecules, which are released during exocytosis. Here, we demonstrated that DMSP and DMS were stored in the secretory vesicles of Phaeocystis antarctica G. Karst. They were trapped within a polyanionic gel matrix, which prevented an accurate measurement of their concentration in the absence of a chelating agent such as EDTA. Understanding the production and the export mechanisms of DMSP and DMS into seawater is important because of the impact the cellular and extracellular pools of these highly relevant biogeochemical metabolites have on the environment. The pool of total DMSP in the presence of Phaeocystis may be underestimated by as much as half. Obtaining accurate budget measurements is the first step toward gaining a better understanding of key issues related to the DMS ocean–air interaction and the effect of phytoplankton DMS production on climate change.  相似文献

In temperate coastal seas, phytodetritus settling from the spring phytoplankton bloom is a potential food source for benthic deposit-feeders. The ability to exploit this seasonally variable resource could be enhanced by sensitivity to chemical cues signalling its arrival at the seabed. The biogenic sulphur compound dimethylsulphide (DMS), a breakdown product of dimethylsulphonioproprionate (DMSP) produced by some phytoplankton species, is a potential candidate for this role. We investigated the behavioural response of a sedentary surface deposit-feeder, the echiuran worm Maxmuelleria lankesteri, to DMS by observations and manipulative experimentation under natural conditions in a Scottish sea loch. Experimental addition of sediment enriched with DMSP-producing phytoplankton caused no significant increase in either the frequency of feeding by M. lankesteri or the rate of sediment ejection from observed burrows. Naturally occurring (DMSP+DMS) content of surface sediment was low during the winter, then peaked in April before declining in May. There was no consistent relationship between this parameter and rate of sediment ejection from M. lankesteri burrows. The results therefore provide no evidence that M. lankesteri uses DMSP or DMS as a stimulus to increased activity. An observed imbalance between the frequency of surface deposit-feeding and sediment ejection from individual burrows remains unexplained.  相似文献

Bacterial species associated with the dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP)-producing phytoplankton Scrippsiella trochoidea were cultured and identified, with the aim of establishing their ability to metabolise DMSP, dimethylsulfide (DMS) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Results demonstrate that of the cultivable bacteria only α-Proteobacteria were capable of producing DMS from DMSP. The concentration of DMSP was shown to affect the amount of DMS produced. Lower DMSP concentrations (1.5?μmol?dm?3) were completely assimilated, whereas higher concentrations (10?μmol?dm?3) resulted in increasing amounts of DMS being produced. By contrast to the restricted set of bacteria that metabolised DMSP,?~?70% of the bacterial isolates were able to ‘consume’ DMS. However, 98-100% of the DMS removed was accounted for as DMSO. Notably, a number of these bacteria would only oxidise DMS in the presence of glucose, including members of the γ-Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. The observations from this study, coupled with published field data, identify DMS oxidation to DMSO as a major transformation pathway for DMS, and we speculate that the fate of DMS and DMSP in the field are tightly coupled to the available carbon produced by phytoplankton.  相似文献

Processing of the phytoplankton-derived organic sulfur compound dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) by bacteria was studied in seawater microcosms in the coastal Gulf of Mexico (Alabama). Modest phytoplankton blooms (peak chlorophyll a [Chl a] concentrations of approximately 2.5 microg liter(-1)) were induced in nutrient-enriched microcosms, while phytoplankton biomass remained low in unamended controls (Chl a concentrations of approximately 0.34 microg liter(-1)). Particulate DMSP concentrations reached 96 nM in the enriched microcosms but remained approximately 14 nM in the controls. Bacterial biomass production increased in parallel with the increase in particulate DMSP, and nutrient limitation bioassays in the initial water showed that enrichment with DMSP or glucose caused a similar stimulation of bacterial growth. Concomitantly, increased bacterial consumption rate constants of dissolved DMSP (up to 20 day(-1)) and dimethylsulfide (DMS) (up to 6.5 day(-1)) were observed. Nevertheless, higher DMSP S assimilation efficiencies and higher contribution of DMSP to bacterial S demand were found in the controls compared to the enriched microcosms. This indicated that marine bacterioplankton may rely more on DMSP as a source of S under oligotrophic conditions than under the senescence phase of phytoplankton blooms. Phylogenetic analysis of the bacterial assemblages in all microcosms showed that the DMSP-rich algal bloom favored the occurrence of various Roseobacter members, flavobacteria (Bacteroidetes phylum), and oligotrophic marine Gammaproteobacteria. Our observations suggest that the composition of the bacterial assemblage and the relative contribution of DMSP to the overall dissolved organic sulfur/organic matter pool control how efficiently bacteria assimilate DMSP S and thereby potentially divert it from DMS production.  相似文献

DMSP (dimethyl sulphonium propionate) contents produced by an Antarctic marine phytoplankton species, Phaeocystis antarctica (Prymnesiophyta), which were incubated under light conditions with radiations of different UV wavebands, were measured by gas chromatography after various exposure times. Full light (UV-B + UV-A + PAR) caused the strongest decrease in the production of DMSP in the alga. A marked depression of DMSP content was also observed with short UV-B and UV-A wavebands after 3 h. It was therefore hypothesised that DMSP production in Phaeocystis antarctica was inhibited by UV radiation. There was a negative correlation on change of DMSP contents under UV radiation. There was a negative correlation on change of DMSP contents under UV radiation with exposure times. The conversion rate of DMSP dissolved to DMS (dimethyl sulphide) was significantly increased with UV radiation. The possibility could not be excluded that a high concentration of free chemical radicals in seawater due to UV radiation resulted in an increase of DMSP cleavage in seawater. The oxidation of DMS in seawater due to UV-B radiation could result in a decrease of its flux to the atmosphere. The effect of UV radiation on DMSP production and oxidation of DMS may be an important factor in the variability of DMSP and the global flux of DMS from ocean to atmosphere. The spatial distributions of dimethylsulfide (DMS), dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), DMSP-lyase activity (DLA) and their controlling factors including nutrients, phytoplankton community and bacterial abundance were investigated in the East China Sea (ECS) during fall from October 19 to November 2, 2015. Diatoms and dinoflagellates dominated the phytoplankton community, while other taxonomic groups were rare and mainly found in the oligotrophic open sea. Affected by the high nutrients concentrations, Chl a, DMS, DMSP and DLA showed high values in eutrophic inshore waters, and decreased from the costal zones to the open sea. Statistical analysis suggested that diatoms and dinoflagellates were the main controlling factors of DMS, DMSP, and DLA in ECS. For size-fractionated samples, a reduced contribution of the microplankton from inshore stations to offshore stations affected by the trophic conditions was noted. Meanwhile, this decrease in microplankton led to an increase in the ratio of DLA contributed by picoplankton and free-living bacteria from the estuary area to the offshore region. The DMS sea-to-air flux was calculated using the equation of Nightingale et al. (Glob Biogeochem Cy 14(1):373–387, 2000), and approximately 2.88 × 10?2 Tg of sulfur was transferred from the sea into the atmosphere in the form of DMS in ECS during fall.

Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is mainly produced by marine phytoplankton but is released into the microbial food web and degraded by marine bacteria to dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and other products. To reveal the abundance and distribution of bacterial DMSP degradation genes and the corresponding bacterial communities in relation to DMS and DMSP concentrations in seawater, we collected surface seawater samples from DMS hot spot sites during a cruise across the Pacific Ocean. We analyzed the genes encoding DMSP lyase (dddP) and DMSP demethylase (dmdA), which are responsible for the transformation of DMSP to DMS and DMSP assimilation, respectively. The averaged abundance (±standard deviation) of these DMSP degradation genes relative to that of the 16S rRNA genes was 33% ± 12%. The abundances of these genes showed large spatial variations. dddP genes showed more variation in abundances than dmdA genes. Multidimensional analysis based on the abundances of DMSP degradation genes and environmental factors revealed that the distribution pattern of these genes was influenced by chlorophyll a concentrations and temperatures. dddP genes, dmdA subclade C/2 genes, and dmdA subclade D genes exhibited significant correlations with the marine Roseobacter clade, SAR11 subgroup Ib, and SAR11 subgroup Ia, respectively. SAR11 subgroups Ia and Ib, which possessed dmdA genes, were suggested to be the main potential DMSP consumers. The Roseobacter clade members possessing dddP genes in oligotrophic subtropical regions were possible DMS producers. These results suggest that DMSP degradation genes are abundant and widely distributed in the surface seawater and that the marine bacteria possessing these genes influence the degradation of DMSP and regulate the emissions of DMS in subtropical gyres of the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Each year, several million tons of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) are produced by marine phytoplankton and bacteria as an important osmolyte to regulate their cellular osmosis. Microbial breakdown of DMSP to the volatile gas dimethylsulfide (DMS) plays an important role in global biogeochemical cycles of the sulphur element between land and the sea. Understanding the enzymes involved in the transformation of DMSP and DMS holds the key to a better understanding of oceanic DMSP cycles. Recent work by Shao et al. (2019) has resolved the crystal structure of two important enzymes, DmdB and DmdC, involved in DMSP transformation through the demethylation pathway. Their work represents an important step towards a systematic understanding of the structure–function relationships of DMSP‐catabolizing enzymes in marine microbes.  相似文献

Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is an abundant organic sulfur compound in marine algae and denitrification influences nitrogen availability to primary producers, the key regulators of coastal eutrophication. In this study, we tested the effect of DMSP on the nitrous oxide (N2O) reduction step of denitrification in sediments and biofilms from the Douro and Ave estuaries (NW Portugal) and in pure cultures of a denitrifying bacterium, Ruegeria pomeroyi. N2O accumulation rates were monitored in sediment slurries and bacterial cell suspensions amended with DMSP concentrations ranging from 0 to 5 mM. In these treatments N2O accumulation rates increased linearly with DMSP concentration (R 2 from 0.89 to 0.99, p < 0.001), suggesting an inhibitory effect of DMSP on the nitrous oxide reductase activity. The addition of DMSP to sediments and bacterial culture resulted in accumulation of dimethylsulfide (DMS) as well as N2O. However, no direct inhibition on N2O reductase activity by DMS was observed. Natural concentrations of DMSP in the different estuarine sites were found to be linearly correlated to natural N2O effluxes (R 2 = 0.64, p < 0.001), suggesting that DMSP may negatively affect N2O reductase in situ. This newly identified interaction between DMSP and N2O emissions may have a significant ecological role as the inhibition of the nitrous oxide reduction enhances nitrogen loss via N2O. Since N2O is a powerful greenhouse gas, the results from our study may be important for evaluating climate change scenarios.  相似文献
