An efficient and cost effective micropropagation protocol using liquid medium was developed for Catharanthus roseus, a commercially important medicinal plant. Comparative analysis of shoot growth and proliferation in liquid Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different concentrations of cytokinins [6-Benzyladenine (BA), Kinetin (KN) and Thidiazuron (TDZ)] was conducted. Better response in terms of shoot proliferation, shoot diameter, number of leaves/shoot, number of branches/shoot, fresh weight and dry weight was observed in a liquid medium vis-à-vis solid medium. A sample of 20 ml of liquid medium supplemented with 5 ??M of BA was optimized for propagation of C. roseus by a liquid culture system. Among various concentrations of auxins tried, 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) 5 ??M was found to be the best for root induction. Quantification of pharmaceutically important constituents (vincristine and vinblastine) and total alkaloid content of microshoots grown in solid and liquid medium as well as in vitro raised plants and mother plant was also conducted, hitherto unreported in this high-value medicinal plant. This work further lays the foundations for the shifting of plant production from small to commercial scale.  相似文献

The lipophilic vitamin E, α-Tocopherol (α-Toc), has been considered as a potent cellular antioxidant naturally occurring in biological membranes. It plays a number of key metabolic roles in plants exposed to various stressful cues. A field experimental was conducted on mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] under varying water-limited regimes and the plants were sprayed with four levels of α-Toc (0, 100, 200, and 300 mg L?1) at the vegetative stage of plant growth. The results showed that limited field irrigation regimes (desiccated conditions) caused a marked reduction in growth parameters (shoot and root fresh and dry weights; shoot and root lengths), photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and b), total soluble proteins (TSP) and yield attributes (number of pods, seeds per plant, weight of ripened pods and 100-seeds weight), while, in contrast, water deficiency induced an increase in phenolics, proline, glycine betaine (GB), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA), reducing and non-reducing sugars, total free amino acids, endogenous tocopherol levels, and activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT). However, the foliar spray of α-Toc significantly improved shoot and root fresh and dry weights, shoot and root lengths, chlorophyll a and b contents, phenolics, proline, GB, reducing and non-reducing sugars, TSP, total free amino acids, endogenous tocopherol level, and activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, and CAT), as well as yield parameters. On the other hand, it significantly decreased the MDA and H2O2 levels. Of all varying levels of α-Toc used, 100 mg L?1 was most effective in causing enhanced accumulation of ascorbic acid (AsA), MDA, and cellular tocopherols particularly in cv. Cyclone 7008, while proline and catalase in cv. Cyclone 8009. Of both cultivars, Cyclone 7008 was superior to the other cultivar in proline, TSP, SOD, and POD enzymes, but cv. Cyclone 8009 being superior in shoot fresh weights, root fresh weight, shoot and root lengths, chlorophyll a and b, phenolics, H2O2, AsA, MDA, CAT, number of pods, seeds, weight of ripened pods, and weight of 100 seeds under dry land conditions. Overall, exogenously applied tocopherol improved yield and myriad of key physio-biochemical attribute in mungbean.  相似文献

Exogenously applied GABA modulates root growth by inhibition of root elongation when seedlings were grown in vitro on full-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts, but root elongation was stimulated when seedlings were grown on 1/8 strength MS salts. When the concentration of single ions in MS salts was individually varied, the control of growth between inhibition and stimulation was found to be related to the level of nitrate (NO3?) in the growth medium. At NO3? concentrations below 40 mM (full-strength MS salts level), root growth was stimulated by the addition of GABA to the growth medium; whereas at concentrations above 40 mM NO3?, the addition of GABA to the growth medium inhibited root elongation. GABA promoted NO3? uptake at low NO3?, while GABA inhibited NO3? uptake at high NO3?. Activities of several enzymes involved in nitrogen and carbon metabolism including nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (NADH-GOGAT), NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (NADP-ICDH), and phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) were regulated by GABA in the growth medium. Supplementing 1/8 strength MS medium with 50 mM GABA enhanced the activities of all of the above enzymes except ICDH activities in root tissues. However, at full-strength MS, GABA showed no inhibitory effect on the activities of these enzymes, except on GS in both root and shoot tissues, and PEPCase activity in shoot tissues. Exogenous GABA increased the amount of NR protein rather than its activation status in the tissues. This study shows that GABA affects the growth of Arabidopsis, possibly by acting as a signaling molecule, modulating the activity of enzymes involved in primary nitrogen metabolism and nitrate uptake.  相似文献

Complex diseases caused by Meloidogyne incognita and Fusarium fungus in cucumber is the most destructive disease under polyhouses. The experiment was conducted in the polyhouse of the Department of Horticulture, CCS HAU, Hisar, Haryana, India during summer season (2015–16) to evaluate the potential of bacterial and fungal biocontrol agents against Meloidogyne incognita and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum in cucumber. Bioagents - Trichoderma viride (Tv), Pseudomonas fluorescence (Pf), Purpureocillium lilacinum (Pl) were taken 10 and 20 g kg−1 seed and bioagents liquid formulation, 10- and 15-ml kg−1 seed, were mixed with the potted soil. Chemical as well as untreated check were also maintained. All the treatments significantly improved the plant growth parameter, viz., shoot length (SL), root length (RL), fresh shoot weight (FSW), fresh root weight (FRW), dry shoot weight (DSW) and dry root weight (DRW) as compared to untreated check. However, significant reduction in nematode population and maximum improvement in plant growth parameter was recorded with carbofuran followed by higher dose of bioagents liquid formulation. Among the bioagents, bioagents liquid formulation was most effective in suppressing root knot nematode galling (43 / root system) and final population in soil (131 J2s / 200 cc soil) and fungus wilt incidence (25 %) at 30th day of after germination and significantly improved the plant growth parameters - shoot length (147.3 cm), fresh shoot weight (55.6 g), dry shoot weight (22.51 g) and dry root weight (4.50 g) from other bioagents. Bioagents liquid formulation was effective in suppression of root-knot nematode and fungus complex disease than the powder formulations of bioagents. More studies should be needed in future to evaluate the efficacy of bioagents as seed treatments and soil applications under field conditions.  相似文献

In order to explore the mechanism of delayed and uneven germination in sharp tooth oak (Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata) (STO), mechanical scarification techniques were used to study STO root and shoot germination and growth. The techniques used were: removing cup scar (RS), removing the pericarp (RP), and cutting off 1/2 (HC) and 2/3 (TC) cotyledons. Germination percentage and root and shoot length for Chinese cabbage (Beassica pekinensis) seeds (CCS) were also investigated for CCS cultivated in a Sanyo growth cabinet watered by distilled water and 80% methanol extracts from the acorn embryo, cotyledon and pericarp with concentrations of 1.0 g, 0.8 g, 0.6 g and 0.4 g dry acorn weight per ml methanol. The results showed that the majority of roots and shoots from acorns with RP and HC treatment emerged two weeks earlier, more simultaneously, and their total emergences were more than 46% and 28% higher, respectively. TC accelerated root and shoot emergence time and root length, but root and shoot germination rate and shoot height had no significant difference from the control. Positive consequences were not observed on all indices of RS treatment. The germination rates of CCS watered by 1.0 g·ml−1 methanol extracts from the embryo and cotyledon were significantly lower than those from the pericarp, and all concentrations resulted in decreased growth of root and shoot. Methanol extracts from pericarp significantly reduced root length of CCS, but presented little response in germination percentage and shoot length. The inhibitory effect was gradually increased with the increasing concentration of the methanol extract. We conclude that both the mechanical restriction of the pericarp and the presence of germination inhibitors in the embryo, cotyledon and pericarp are the causes for delayed and asynchronous germination of STO acorns.  相似文献

The proposed work describes a protocol for high-frequency in vitro regeneration through nodal segments and shoot tips in Decalepsis arayalpathra, a critically endangered medicinal liana of the Western Ghats. Nodal segments were more responsive than shoot tips in terms of shoot proliferation. Murashige and Skoog’s (MS) basal medium supplemented with 5.0 μM 6-benzyladenine (BA) was optimum for shoot initiation through both the explants. Among different combinations of plant growth regulators and growth additive screened, MS medium added with 5.0 μM BA + 0.5 μM indole-3-acetic acid + 20.0 μM adenine sulphate effectuated the highest response: 11.8 shoots per nodal segment and 5.5 shoots per shoot tip with mean shoot length of 9.2 and 4.8 cm, respectively. Half-strength MS medium with 2.5 μM α-naphthalene acetic acid was optimum for in vitro root induction. The plantlets with the well developed shoot and root were acclimatized in Soilrite? with 92 % survival rate in the field conditions. During acclimatization, chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate were gradually changed in dependence of formation of new leaves. Further, the changes in activities of antioxidant enzymes, i.e., superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR) as well as activity of carbonic anhydrase were also observed: a continuous rise in SOD activity, but a rise and fall in the activities of CAT, APX, and GR were also noticed. Maximum fresh mass (3.1 g plant-1), dry mass (0.35 g plant-1) of roots and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde content of 9.22 μg cm-3(root extract) were recorded after 8 weeks of acclimatization.  相似文献

Gentiana dinarica Beck, native to the Balkan Dinaric Mountains, was established in vitro from axillary shoot buds. It was maintained in the form of shoot cultures on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg l?1 6-benzyladenine (BA) and 0.1 mg l?1 α-naphthaleneacetic acid and excised root cultures were maintained on ½ MS medium with 0.5 mg l?1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Shoot cultures, adventitious roots and excised root cultures were analysed by HPLC techniques for the presence of secoiridoids and xanthones. Gentiopicrin and swertiamarin, the dominant components of shoot cultures, could not be detected in root cultures. Xanthones were present in both shoot and root cultures with norswertianin-1-O-primeveroside as the dominant metabolite. The secoiridoid and xanthone content, although characteristic for certain plant organs, was dependent on the concentration of plant growth regulators (BA and IBA) added to the medium. BA in the shoot multiplication stage strongly increased the secondary metabolite (SEM) content of shoot cultures. IBA had little effect on SEM accumulation in shoots during rooting, while it moderately stimulated SEM accumulation in excised root cultures.  相似文献

A rapid, prolific and reproducible protocol for in vitro shoot regeneration from mature cotyledons of Platanus acerifolia has been developed. The influences of different plant growth regulator (PGR) combinations and donor seedling ages on shoot regeneration were investigated. The results showed that the application of BA in conjunction with NAA was the most effective PGR combination for the induction of shoot regeneration. When cotyledon explants of 5-day-old seedlings were incubated on MS basal medium supplemented with 4.0 mg L?1 BA and 0.2 mg L?1 NAA, 67.6?±?4.9% of the cotyledon segments produced adventitious shoots. These regenerated shoots were initially formed as stunted rosette cluster forms and were encouraged to elongate to produce distinct shoots by transfer onto MS medium containing 0.5 mg L?1 BA and 0.05 mg L?1 NAA; the resulting mean number of adventitious shoots per explant was 5.81?±?0.36. The elongated shoots were readily induced to root (i.e. 89.3% of shoots) by incubation on ½-strength MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg L?1 IBA. This is the first report of an efficient in vitro shoot regeneration protocol for P. acerifolia through direct organogenesis using cotyledon explants. Hence, this provides a more efficient basis for the Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of Platanus than previously available.  相似文献

Salinity affects plant growth, development, yield, and is a big challenge for wheat growth across the globe. Possible feasible solution is creation of salt-tolerant material, genetic variation is a criterion to developing genetically superior individuals. To assess the genetic variation for salt tolerance, nationally and internationally-derived 81 wheat genotypes were selected and evaluated in 0- and 150-mM salt in nutritional culture at seedling stage. Results indicate that salinity levels reveal significant (p ≤ 0.01) differences for fresh root weight (RW), shoot length (SL), fresh shoot weight (SW), total plant length (TL), total fresh weight (TW), root/shoot weight ratio (RSWR), root/shoot length ratio (RSLR), and relative growth rate for weight (RGR-Wt). While, there was no difference for root length (RL). Hierarchical Clustering and Pairwise correlation analysis showed TW, RGR-Wt, SL, SW, and RW were positively correlated among themselves, whereas RL had poor correlations with all the traits except TL and RSLR. Hence, selection of SL can improve the performance of other parameters. Based on PCA analysis, SW and RGR-Wt were the major discriminative components for wheat genotypes. Present study explained that shoot related parameters could be used as a selection criterion to categorize salt-tolerant genotypes. Outperforming genotypes 1104 and 1106 in saline conditions could be used as parents in creation of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes, and parameters such as SL, SW, TW, and RGR-Wt for early screening will be important for creating salt-tolerant and high yielding wheat genotypes.  相似文献

Aims

Typha angustifolia is a heavy metal tolerant plant that grows in a uranium mine tailings highly contaminated with iron. In this study three iron oxidizing microbes (FeOBs) isolated from Typha rhizoplane were investigated for their role in plant growth promotion (PGP). Their effect on iron nutrition in Typha under iron replete and excess condition was also evaluated.

Methods

The PGP activities of the FeOBs were studied by measuring their influence on plant growth. To investigate the mechanism of growth promotion their ability to solubilize phosphate, and to produce Indole acetic acid and siderophores were studied. The influence of the FeOBs on root to shoot partitioning of iron was tested by measuring total iron content in roots and shoots treated with microbes.

Results

The FeOBs were named as Paenibacillus cookii JGR8, (MTCC12002), Pseudomonas jaduguda JGR2 (LMG25820) and Bacillus megaterium JGR9 (MTCC12001). The siderophore producers, influenced iron accumulation in the plant root. Additionally P. pseudoalcaligenes JGR2 increased shoot iron content overcoming the root- shoot barrier that allows Typha to exclude metals from its shoot. Among the PGP mechanisms tested, ability to solubilize phosphate appeared to be most significant for increasing the plant biomass.

Conclusion

FeOBs that produce siderophore increased iron content in plant and therefore can be of immense biotechnological importance. However Biomass increase was directly correlated with increased phosphate acquisition and not with enhanced iron accumulation in Typha.  相似文献

An in vitro plant regeneration protocol was successfully established for Cymbidium bicolor an epiphytic orchid by culturing seeds from green pods. Immature seeds were germinated on four basal media viz., Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, Knudson C (KC) orchid medium, Knudson C modified Morel (KCM) medium and Lindemann orchid (LO) medium. Seed germination and protocorm development was significantly higher in LO medium (96.6 %) followed by KCM (89 %), MS (77.5 %) and KC (62.7 %) media after 56 days. For multiple shoot induction the protocorms were transferred to B5 medium supplemented with cytokinin. Among the various cytokinins tested, BAP (4.42 μM) induced maximum (27.59) number of multiple shoots per explant. IBA was effective in inducing healthy roots. Tissue-cultured protocorms and seedlings of C. bicolor were inoculated with AC-01 fungal strain (Moniliopsis sp.) isolated from the mycorrizal roots of an epiphytic orchid Aerides crispum. Mycorrhizal fungi significantly enhanced number of roots, root length and shoot number.  相似文献

A healthy root system is vital for tissue culture plantlet survival and rapid adaptation from the in vitro microenvironment to glasshouse conditions. Optimization of the root induction medium is an effective way to promote root induction and elongation. Levels of three auxins (α-naphthaleneacetic acid [NAA], 3-indoleacetic acid [IAA], and 3-indolebutyric acid [IBA]) and copper sulfate (CuSO4) have been investigated in a series of experiments with a sorghum inbred line, Tx430. Significant improvement in root proliferation and shoot growth were observed on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1 μmol/L CuSO4, 1 mg/L NAA, 1 mg/L IAA, and 1 mg/L IBA. On average, one explant (the original in vitro-derived shoot) of Tx430 regenerated 56.7 roots, which was 20-fold higher on the optimal medium than on MS control medium. Another tested genotype SA281 showed similar response patterns as Tx430 across media. In addition, 100% of Tx430 and SA281 plantlets originating from the optimized root induction medium all survived after being transferred to potting soil in the glasshouse. The results demonstrate that a combination of auxins (NAA, IAA, and IBA) and CuSO4 together at optimal concentrations provide additive effects on promoting root proliferation and explant growth of in vitro sorghum in root induction medium, and subsequently resulted in 100% survival rate of plantlets ex tissue culture. Compared with two published and frequently used root induction media, the optimized medium significantly enhanced root induction and plantlet growth.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Plant competition studies are restricted by the difficulty of quantifying root systems of competitors. Analyses are usually limited to above-ground traits. Here, a new approach to address this issue is reported.

Methods

Root system weights of competing plants can be estimated from: shoot weights of competitors; combined root weights of competitors; and slopes (scaling exponents, α) and intercepts (allometric coefficients, β) of ln-regressions of root weight on shoot weight of isolated plants. If competition induces no change in root : shoot growth, α and β values of competing and isolated plants will be equal. Measured combined root weight of competitors will equal that estimated allometrically from measured shoot weights of each competing plant. Combined root weights can be partitioned directly among competitors. If, as will be more usual, competition changes relative root and shoot growth, the competitors'' combined root weight will not equal that estimated allometrically and cannot be partitioned directly. However, if the isolated-plant α and β values are adjusted until the estimated combined root weight of competitors matches the measured combined root weight, the latter can be partitioned among competitors using their new α and β values. The approach is illustrated using two herbaceous species, Dactylis glomerata and Plantago lanceolata.

Key Results

Allometric modelling revealed a large and continuous increase in the root : shoot ratio by Dactylis, but not Plantago, during competition. This was associated with a superior whole-plant dry weight increase in Dactylis, which was ultimately 2·5-fold greater than that of Plantago. Whole-plant growth dominance of Dactylis over Plantago, as deduced from allometric modelling, occurred 14–24 d earlier than suggested by shoot data alone.

Conclusion

Given reasonable assumptions, allometric modelling can analyse competitive interactions in any species mixture, and overcomes a long-standing problem in studies of competition.  相似文献

Clonally propagated shoots of teak (Tectona grandis Linn) were cultured in vitro under photomixotrophlc (sucrose 10-40 g l-1) and photoautotrophic (sucrose-free medium) conditions in MS medium containing kinetin and benzyl amino purine (0.1 mg l-1 each). Sucrose concentrations were gradually depleted in mixotrophic cultures. Growth and fresh weight of shoot chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophyll content of leaves were estimated. In sucrose-free medium, growth and chlorophyll synthesis decreased after limited period of 2-3 subcultures, whereas they got stimulated under photomixotrophic condition with 10-30 g l-1 sucrose; optimum being the medium with 30 g l-1 sucrose. Higher concentration of sucrose (40 g l-1) inhibited shoot growth. Shoots can tolerate gradual depletion of sucrose upto a limit of 5 g l-1 under mixotrophic condition.  相似文献

Uromyces phaseoli, the causal agent of bean rust, suppressed shoot and root growth of three bean cultivars, reducing root weight more than shoot weight. The greatest suppression of root weight was on the cultivar that appeared most susceptible by visual ratings of shoot symptoms. Meloidogyne incognita suppressed shoot and root growth of all test cultivars; root weight reductions differed among cultivars identical in susceptibility to this pathogen in root-gall rating tests. Infection of plants with both pathogens suppressed plant weights significantly more than did infection by either pathogen alone, evidencing an additive effect. U. phaseoli and M. incognita on the same plant influenced the reproduction of one another, presumably through effects on the host. Fungal uredia were reduced in size and sporulation capacity; M. incognita produced fewer root galls, and fewer eggs per egg mass.  相似文献

Isogenic lines of pea (Pisum sativum L.) with the genetically determined changes in leaf morphology, afila (af) and tendril-less (tl), were used to study the relationship between shoot and root growth rates. The time-course of shoot and root growth was followed during the pre-floral period in the intact plants grown under similar conditions. The af mutation produced afila leaves without leaflets, whereas in the case of the tl mutations, tendrils were substituted with leaflets, and acacia-like leaves were developed. Due to the changes in leaf morphology caused by these mutations, pea genotypes differed in leaf area: starting from day 7, the leaf area was lower in the af plants and larger in the tl plants as compared to the wild-type plants. Such divergence was amplified in the course of plant development and reached its maximum immediately before the transition to flowering. Plants of isogenic lines did not notably differ in stem surface areas. In spite of significant difference in total leaf area, the wild type and tl plants did not differ in leaf dry weight. Starting from leaf 9, the af plants lagged behind two leaflet-bearing genotypes (wild type and tl) in leaf dry weight, whereas stem dry weight was similar in the wild type and tl forms and slightly lower in the af plants. Root dry weights were practically similar in the wild type and tl plants until flowering. The reduction of leaf area in the af plants drastically reduced root dry weight. In other words, the latter index was related to the total weight and total area of leaves and stems. The correlation analysis demonstrated an extremely low relationship between leaf and stem area and dry weight and those of roots early in plant development (when plants develop five to seven leaves). Later, immediately before flowering (nine to eleven leaves), root weight was positively related to leaf weight and area; however, stem area and root weight did not correlate. Thus, in three genotypes (wild type, af, and tl), at the end of their vegetative growth phase, leaf and root biomass accumulated in proportion, independently of leaf area expansion.  相似文献

An efficient protocol has been developed for in vitro plant regeneration via multiple shoot induction in lucerne (Medicago sativa L). Shoot tips from in vitro grown 5–6 days old seedlings of 3 cultivars, LLC-3, Chetak and RL-88 were used as explants for multiple shoot induction on MS medium supplemented with cytokinins. Maximum of 14 shoots per apical meristem were observed in case of cv Chetak on MS medium supplemented with BAP (12.6 μM) and KN (9.3 μM). Shoot elongation on MS medium supplemented with GA (5.8 μM), while root induction was achieved on MS medium supplemented with IAA (11.4 μM) and activated charcoal (2.0 g l?1). Tissue raised plants showed 75% survival after transfer to soil under field conditions.  相似文献

The physiological parameters of microcuttings, namely leaf area, weight (wt) and position on the stock shoot, had significant effects on root vigour, microshoot growth and incidence of shoot tip necrosis (STN) in cultures of grape (Vitis vinifera L.) ‘Arka Neelamani’. Single-node leafy cuttings cultured in MS medium containing 1 μM IAA and 0.1 μM GA3 generally rooted first and subsequently sprouted into a single shoot. Small leafed cuttings exhibited slow root emergence, poor quality roots, early sprouting and weak shoot growth. Large leafed cuttings on the other hand, showed early rooting, vigorous roots, delayed sprouting and healthier shoots. Significant correlations were observed between fresh root wt per plantlet at 1 month in culture and wt of lamina, total wt and leaf area of the cuttings in that order. A significant correlation also existed between wt of roots and height or wt of the sprout that developed. The study suggests that the weight or area of the leaf governed the root growth in a microcutting. STN was observed in some plantlets particularly those derived from large leafed cuttings. Such cuttings showed vigorous roots and delayed but fast sprout growth that ended in STN. Plantlets showing STN had less Ca++ and Mg++ in the shoot tissue than in the shoots of normal plantlets while the roots showed similar Ca++ or higher Mg++ contents. Both had comparable amounts of cytokinins in shoot and root tissues. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effects of combinations of organic amendments, phytochemicals, and plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) germination, transplant growth, and infectivity of Meloidogyne incognita were evaluated. Two phytochemicals (citral and benzaldehyde), three organic amendments (pine bark, chitin, and hemicellulose), and three bacteria (Serratia marcescens, Brevibacterium iodinum, and Pseudomonas fluorescens) were assessed. Increasing rates of benzaldehyde and citral reduced nematode egg viability in vitro. Benzaldehyde was 100% efficacious as a nematicide against juveniles, whereas citral reduced juvenile viability to less than 20% at all rates tested. Benzaldehyde increased tomato seed germination and root weight, whereas citral decreased both. High rates of pine bark or chitin reduced plant growth but not seed germination, whereas low rates of chitin increased shoot length, shoot weight, and root weight; improved root condition; and reduced galling. The combination of chitin and benzaldehyde significantly improved tomato transplant growth and reduced galling. While each of the bacterial isolates contributed to increased plant growth in combination treatments, only Brevibacterium iodinum applied alone significantly improved plant growth.  相似文献

We compared seedling growth of four Artemisia species dominated at different habitats to determine whether interspecific seedling growth variation of a same genus in tolerance to burial can be used to explain plant distribution in the sand dune field. Interdune lowland species, Artemisia gmelinii, stabilized dune species, A. frigida, semi-stabilized dune species, A. halodendron, and active dune species, A. wudanica were selected. Seedlings grown for 3 weeks were treated at five burial depths for three burial times in pot experiments. Species from the habitats with little burial had smaller survival rate, dry weight and stem elongation speed than those from the habitats with intensive burial when buried. Furthermore, when buried, the former tended to adjust biomass allocation between shoot and root and produce adventitious buds, while the latter tended to maintain a constant root:shoot ratio and produce adventitious roots. We conclude that (1) seedlings of species with a long evolutionary history of exposure to sand burial (from the active sand dune), show quicker stem growth when buried than do seedlings of species from the habitats with little or no sand burial; (2) seedlings of species which do not change root:shoot ratio might be more tolerant of sand burial than those do; (3) seedlings of species from the habitats with intensive sand burial is prone to produce adventitious roots and seedlings of species from the habitats with little or no sand burial tend to produce adventitious buds when buried.  相似文献
