This paper describes and then analyzes the decision-making arrangements that prevail among the Raikas—nomadic shepherds from Western India. The paper suggests, using a simple analytical framework, that the existing distribution of decision-making during migration helps the Raikasto utilize available economies of scale, represent the different interest groups in their collectives, and control their decision-makers. At the same time, the ordinary shepherds in the camp are able to extract a comfortable subsistence from a complex and harsh environment by delegating much of their decision-making responsibilities to the leaders in the camp. To the extent shepherds in other parts of the world migrate over long distances and must confront similar issues of delegation of responsibilities and control over decision-makers, the analysis holds general relevance.  相似文献

Lactase persistence (LP)—the ability to digest lactose in adulthood—is paradigmatic of Holocenic dietary change affecting the evolutionary trajectory of specific populations. Kuwait represents one location of high LP where the variation in associated genomic regions has not been examined. Here, we present new sequence data from a 427 bp amplicon 14 kb upstream of the LCT (lactase) gene for two Bedouin tribal populations, the Ajman and Mutran. We estimate the frequency of known LP associated alleles and discuss the impact of nomadic‐pastoralism on the associated genetic variation. We observe high frequency (56% on average) of the ?13,915*G allele in both tribes, which is consistent with the high prevalence of LP in Kuwait. Whilst LP associated alleles occur in Kuwait at a similar frequency to other regional populations, we suggest that the ?13,915*G allele frequency among the Kuwaiti Bedouin may be higher than among non‐Bedouin Kuwaitis, possibly due to greater historical reliance on milk consumption or genetic drift. Genetic relationships were studied by means of ten isoenzymatic systems, at the genus and species level, using two distances and four methods of aggregation in a germplasm collection of 198 cultivars and accessions of 54 species belonging to Citrus and 13 related genera. The most consistent results were obtained by the chord distance and the neighbor-joining clustering method. Citrus species were distributed in two main groups: the orange-mandarin group and the lime lemon-citron-pummelo group. The species C. halimii and C. tachibana are not included in these groups. Mandarin species fall into three main subgroups: one includes C. sinensis; the second, C. aurantium, the third, small-fruit species. The citron, the pummelo and the ancient lemon subgroups form a cluster to which the species belonging to subgenus Papeda and the cultivated limes, lemons and bergamots are related. Microcitrus spp, to which Severinia buxifolia and Atalantia ceylanica seem to be related, cluster with the lime lemon-citron-pummelo group while Fortunella is close to the orange-mandarin group. Poncirus trifoliata, the most important species for citrus rootstock improvement is located far from Citrus but connected to it through Fortunella spp. A broad distribution of species has been found that should be taken into account to sample new genotypes in the search of desired characters in order to fully and efficiently use genetic resources for citrus improvement.  相似文献

Recent field studies suggest that Macaca thibetana,a large endemic Chinese macaque, may be quite folivorous, distinguishing it from most other macaque species, which tend to be primarily frugivorous. To understand how this diet affects its masticatory system, we conducted a comparative morphometric study of mandibular dimensions. We took linear measurements from male and female mandibles of this species as well as four other macaques—M. fascicularis, M. nemestrina, M. arctoides,and M. assamensis—and four species of Presbytis—P. obscura, P. rubicunda, P. cristata,and P. phayrei—and subjected to them to a variety of analyses. Based on analyses of variances and discriminant analyses on each sex individually, the mandible of M. thibetanacorresponds to expected patterns for folivorous primates with respect to its wide condyles and thick corpora. However, the height of the corpus and symphysis are lower, and the anteroposterior length of the condyle is longer than predicted for a folivore. In addition to interpretations specifically relating to M. thibetana,we also discuss the functional morphology of the other species in light of what is published about their diets.  相似文献

We describe here two new transposable elements, CemaT4 and CemaT5, that were identified within the sequenced genome of Caenorhabditis elegans using homology based searches. Five variants of CemaT4 were found, all non-autonomous and sharing 26 bp inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) and segments (152–367 bp) of sequence with similarity to the CemaT1 transposon of C. elegans. Sixteen copies of a short, 30 bp repetitive sequence, comprised entirely of an inverted repeat of the first 15 bp of CemaT4’s ITR, were also found, each flanked by TA dinucleotide duplications, which are hallmarks of target site duplications of mariner-Tc transposon transpositions. The CemaT5 transposable element had no similarity to maT elements, except for sharing identical ITR sequences with CemaT3. We provide evidence that CemaT5 and CemaT3 are capable of excising from the C. elegans genome, despite neither transposon being capable of encoding a functional transposase enzyme. Presumably, these two transposons are cross-mobilised by an autonomous transposon that recognises their shared ITRs. The excisions of these and other non-autonomous elements may provide opportunities for abortive gap repair to create internal deletions and/or insert novel sequence within these transposons. The influence of non-autonomous element mobility and structural diversity on genome variation is discussed.  相似文献

Codling moth is a notorious fruit-boring pest that has been neglected as a target for biological control introductions. Nonetheless, it is a suitable target as it is an exotic species in the western U.S., on an exotic crop plant, in a relatively undisturbed environment, and has a lower level of abundance in its region of origin in Central Asia. In contrast, it belongs to the Olethreutidae, a family of pests with a very poor history of past successes in the biological control record. From an analysis of a stage-structured model for codling moth, the second instar and cocoon are identified as the most vulnerable life stages in terms of the potential for additional parasitism-based mortality to reduce the intrinsic rate of increase of codling moth populations. Criteria used in the selection of effective parasitoids for introduction to the western U.S. from Central Asia were the absence of antagonistic interactions between parasitoid species, greater than 30% parasitism observed in the region or origin, and parasitoids targeting the second instar and cocoon stages. Three species selected for introduction were the larval parasitoid Bassus rufipes, and two cocoon parasitoids Liotryphon caudatus and Mastrus ridibundus. Of these, M. ridibundus also exhibits three attributes considered to be of value from a theoretical perspective, a positive response to patches of higher host density, a shorter generation time, and production of a greater number of female offspring per host attacked.  相似文献

Flexible pedicels are characteristic of birdpollinated plants, yet have received little attention in studies of hummingbird-flower interactions. A major implication of flexible pedicels is that flowers may move during pollination. We examined whether such motion affected interactions between ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) and jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) by increasing pollen deposition and by altering the effectiveness of nectar removal. For I. capensis, flower mobility enhanced pollen deposition: birds had significantly longer contact with anthers and more pollen deposited on their bills and crowns when foraging at mobile flowers than at flowers that had been experimentally immobilized. In contrast, flower mobility imposed a cost on hummingbirds by significantly increasing their handling times and reducing their extraction rates relative to their interactions with immobile flowers. Field observations indicated that the motion observed during hummingbird visits did not occur when bees (Bombus spp., Apis mellifera) visited I. capensis flowers, which suggests that the mobility of I. capensis flowers is an adaptation for hummingbird pollination.  相似文献

One important assumption in applying210Pb-dating is that atmospherically deposited Pb is immobilized in the peat or sediment column. This assumption has been challenged widely, but has never been evaluated experimentally. We evaluated Pb mobility and the chemical forms in which Pb is stabilized in peat profiles by adding either soluble or particulate Pb to intact peat cores that were maintained under different water level regimes (permanently high, permanently low, fluctuating between high and low) and were subjected to simulated precipitation over a five month period. By analyzing the behavior of stable Pb we made inferences about the expected behavior of210Pb. Results indicate that added soluble Pb2+ was retained in the peat through physiochemical binding to organic matter, and as such Pb2+ was largely immobile in peat even under conditions of a fluctuating water table. Added particulate Pb was largely (most likely by physical entrapment), but not completely, immobilized in peat. In none of the water table treatments was there evidence to support mobility of Pb by alternating formation and oxidation of Sulfides, or by any other mechanism. The binding of Pb2+ with organic matter at the peat surface, and the absence of Pb mobility lend credence to210Pb-dating ofSphagnum-dominated peat deposits, which are over 90% organic matter throughout, and have high cation exchange capacities.  相似文献

Summary Based on meiotic chromosome behavior in intra- and interspecific hybrids, genome symbols were assigned to the following diploid (2n=40) Glycine species: G. canescens = AA; G. clandestina- Intermediate pod (Ip)=A 1 A 1; G. clandestina-Short pod (Sp)=BB; G. latifolia = B 1 B 1; G. tabacina = B 2 B 2; G. cyrtoloba = CC; and G. tomentella = DD. Genome symbol GG was reserved for the soybean, G. max. At metaphaseI, loose chromosome associations were observed in completely sterile interspecific hybrids whose parents differed in their genomes, suggesting some chromosome homologies among species. Although G. clandestina-Sp, G. latifolia and G. tabacina are morphologically distinct species, they differ only by a paracentric inversion. Similar observations were recorded for G. canescens and G. clandestina-Ip. Evidence is presented that demonstrates that G. tabacina (2n=80) and G. tomentella (2n=78, 80) are allotetraploid species complexes. Hybrid weakness, sterility, seedling lethality and seed inviability were found in intra- and interspecific hybrids.This research was supported in part by the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Special grant 82-CRSR-2-2007). A strain of Ulocladium botrytis isolated from diseased Orobanche crenata shoots caused disease on the parasitic weed in pathogenicity tests. The potential of the fungus to be developed as a mycoherbicide for Orobanche spp. was further investigated. Although the fungus significantly decreased O. crenata germination in vitro by 80%, it did not generally lead to a decreased number of O. crenata shoots or tubercles in inoculated root chambers or pots. However, the number of diseased or dead tubercles and underground shoots was significantly increased compared to the noninoculated treatments. Postemergence inoculation of O. crenata shoots with a conidial suspension resulted in the death of almost all inoculated plants 14 days after application under greenhouse conditions. In preliminary host-range studies, the pathogen caused disease on Orobanche cumana on sunflower whereas on Orobanche aegyptiaca shoots parasitizing tomato only minimal disease symptoms could be detected after postemergence inoculation. Based on the results of our investigations, we conclude that Ulocladium botrytis has only a limited potential to be used as a biocontrol agent against Orobanche spp.  相似文献

Host-age selection by several Trichogramma spp. strains was examined in laboratory choice-tests, in order to use this as a criterion to select a candidate strain for inundative releases against lepidopterous pests of cabbage in the Netherlands. The behaviour of individual females toward combinations of host eggs of two different ages (zero vs 2 and 1 vs 3-day-old) of the host species Mamestra brassicae, Pieris brassicae and P. rapae was observed directly. Host age generally did not appear to affect contact or acceptance of eggs of either host species, except that oviposition was generally lower in the oldest M. brassicae eggs. The duration of the oviposition behaviour was sometimes influenced by host-age. All strains were able to discriminate between parasitized and unparasitized hosts by external or internal examation. The lack of variation among the strains suggests that the host-age selection pattern of a given host-Trichogramma combination is predominantly dependent on the host species. The results are discussed in relation to optimal foraging theory.
Résumé Afin de sélectionner une souche candidate de Trichogramma sp. pour des lâchés inondatifs contre les Lépidoptères, pestes du chou aux Pays-Bas, la sélection hôte-âge de plusieurs souches de Trichogramma spp., issues d'un éventail de 60 souches, a été examinée en laboratoire par des tests de choix. Le comportement de femelles individuelles, mises en présence de combinaisons d'oeufs-hôtes d'âges différents (zero ou 2 jours et 1 ou 3 jours) des espèces-hôtes Mamestra brassicae, Pieris brassicae et P. rapae, a été observé directement. En général, l'âge de l'hôte ne semble pas affecter le contact et l'acceptation des oeufs quelque soit l'espèce-hôte. La ponte diminue généralement dans les oeufs les plus âgés de M. brassicae, mais pas chez les autres espèces. La durée du comportement de ponte est parfois influencée par l'âge de l'hôte. Toutes les souches ont montré la capacité de discriminer entre les hôtes parasités et nonparasités, a l'examen externe ou interne et ceci, indépendamment de l'âge de l'hôte. Le manque de variation parmi les souces suggère que le mode de sélection hôte-âge est surtout caractéristique de l'espèce-hôte. Les resultats sont discutés en relation avec la théorie de fourrage optimal.

Using DNA sequence data from multiple genes (often from more than one genome compartment) to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships has become routine. Augmenting this approach with genomic structural characters (e.g., intron gain and loss, changes in gene order) as these data become available from comparative studies already has provided critical insight into some long-standing questions about the evolution of land plants. Here we report on the presence of a group II intron located in the mitochondrial atp1 gene of leptosporangiate and marattioid ferns. Primary sequence data for the atp1 gene are newly reported for 27 taxa, and results are presented from maximum likelihood-based phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian inference for 34 land plants in three data sets: (1) single-gene mitochondrial atp1 (exon+intron sequences); (2) five combined genes (mitochondrial atp1 [exon only]; plastid rbcL, atpB, rps4; nuclear SSU rDNA); and (3) same five combined genes plus morphology. All our phylogenetic analyses corroborate results from previous fern studies that used plastid and nuclear sequence data: the monophyly of euphyllophytes, as well as of monilophytes; whisk ferns (Psilotidae) sister to ophioglossoid ferns (Ophioglossidae); horsetails (Equisetopsida) sister to marattioid ferns (Marattiidae), which together are sister to the monophyletic leptosporangiate ferns. In contrast to the results from the primary sequence data, the genomic structural data (atp1 intron distribution pattern) would seem to suggest that leptosporangiate and marattioid ferns are monophyletic, and together they are the sister group to horsetails--a topology that is rarely reconstructed using primary sequence data.  相似文献

Flowers of Tupidanthus show an extreme case of floral polymery among asterids. Floral development and gynoecium structure have been examined. The floral meristem has a complex folded shape. The tiny calyx is initiated as a continuous ring primordium. The corolla is initiated as a lobed ring and develops into a calyptra. All stamen primordia appear simultaneously as a single whorl. The carpels, also in a single whorl, tend to alternate with the stamens. Some Schefflera species related to Tupidanthus are also studied. The flower of Tupidanthus is interpreted as a result of fasciation. Further investigation should determine whether mutation(s) in gene(s) of the CLAVATA family are responsible for the fasciation here. The significance of Tupidanthus for understanding spatial pattern formation in flowers of Araliaceae, and both functional and developmental constraints in angiosperm flowers with a single polymerous carpel whorl are discussed.  相似文献

Tentative identification using HPLC and RIA techniques indicated the presence of zeatin-O-glucoside, zeatin, ribosylzeatin, dihydrozeatin, iso-pentenyladenine and iso-pentenyladenosine in the petals of carnation flowers. Dihydrozeatin is apparently responsible for most of the biological activity. Within the petals most activity was detected in the basal parts which also senesced much slower than the upper parts of the petals. Treatment with AOA extended petal longevity and reduced ethylene production. This was associated with higher cytokinin-like activity in the basal parts of the petals.These higher levels of cytokinins were not observed in the petals of ACC treated flowers or in the detached control flowers. It is suggested that cytokinin transport and/or metabolism may play an important role in regulating ethylene production in cut carnations.  相似文献

Indigenous natural enemies occur within field grown crops at varying densities dependent upon a variety of other biotic and abiotic parameters. This natural control often does not provide adequate suppression, which results in the application of other pest management solutions including augmentative biological control. When releasing mass-reared natural enemies into a backdrop of existing natural enemy populations, competitive interactions are likely to occur. To assess the influence of these interspecific interactions on the outcome of such biological control practices studies were conducted in a simulated, field cage grown, cut chrysanthemum production system. Competitive interactions of two commercially available parasitoids were studied both in terms of parasitoid-host population dynamics and the impact of interspecific interactions on crop quality at harvest. The parasitoids Diglyphus isaea and Dacnusa sibirica attacking the leafminer Liriomyza langei were used as the model insect system. Both parasitoids are cosmopolitan and are known to occur in many ornamental production areas. Treatment comparisons included single species releases with complimentary releases of both species either simultaneously or with 2-week time lags, as well as a no release control to measure the background effects of natural mortality. Conclusions drawn from results of population-level studies replicated within and among years were that levels of interspecific competition among parasitoid species were undetectable at leafminer densities typical of field-grown ornamental crops (low densities), and thus, the efficacy of one species released into a backdrop of potentially competing parasitoids did not negatively or positively affect the outcome of the augmentative biological control, nor was there a positive outcome; however, crop quality at harvest was influenced.  相似文献

Summary Ecological trade-offs between growth, reproduction and both condensed tannins and cyanogenic glycosides were examined in Lotus corniculatus by correlating shoot (leaves and stem) size and reproductive output with chemical concentrations. We found that cyanide concentration was not related to shoot size, but that condensed tannin concentrations were positively correlated with shoot size; larger plants contained higher tannin concentrations. Both tannin and cyanide concentrations were depressed when plants produced fruits. Defense costs change as plants mature and begin to reproduce. These trade-offs indicate that cost of defense chemical production cannot be predicted merely on the basis of molecular size, composition or concentration.  相似文献

Virtually all Vibrio spp. known and available in culture collections and several newly isolated Vibrio sp. were tested for their ability to fix molecular nitrogen, using the acetylene reduction technique, the fixation of the heavy isotope 15N, and by growth on media devoid of combined nitrogen. Among the 27 species tested, four, including V. diazotrophicus, proved to be nitrogenase-positive. The potential of nitrogen fixation was now also discovered in V. natriegens, V. pelagius and V. cincinnatiensis. Among the 9 newly isolated strains, 4 were nitrogenase-positive. These strains were classified as V. diazotrophicus on the basis of DNA homology studies. Nitrogenase was only induced during growth under anaerobic conditions. Dissolved oxygen as low as 1 M inhibited nitrogenase completely. This inhibition at low oxygen concentration, however, was reversible. 50–100 M dissolved oxygen inhibited nitrogenase irreversibly.This work was carried out at Geomicrobiology Division, the University of Oldenburg, FRG  相似文献

Three hymenopteran parasitoids that attackPlathypena scabra (F.) larvae often oviposit into consecutive instars of the host. We investigated host discrimination by adults and competitive interactions among larvae of these three parasitoid species. Avoidance of superparasitism byCotesia marginiventris (Cresson) andDiolcogaster facetosa Ashmead was tested. Females of each species were presented either withP. scabra parasitized by a different female of the same species 6 h earlier or unparasitizedP. scabra. Under these conditions,C. marginiventris attacked similar numbers of parasitized and unparasitized hosts.D. facetosa attacked 31% fewer parasitized than unparasitizedP. scabra. The avoidance of multiple parasitism byD. facetosa was studied in a similar bioassay. AlthoughD. facetosa females parasitized fewerP. scabra that had been attacked byC. marginiventris 6 h previously, the reduction in parasitism was only about 23%. In competition studies, immatureD. facetosa were better competitors than immatureC. marginiventris. Aleiodes (=Rogas) nolophanae (Ashmead) was an inferior competitor against bothC. marginiventris andD. facetosa when the duration between parasitism events was 1 h, but their competitive ability increased when they multiply parasitized hosts at least 32 h after the initial oviposition.  相似文献

A cytological analysis of 37 experimental interspecific hybrids withinEpilobium sect.Epilobium, involving 23 taxa, has indicated that the CC chromosome arrangement differs from BB by a single reciprocal translocation and was probably, like AA and DD, derived from it. Preliminary results suggest that the CC arrangement may characterize the AsianE. cephalostigma andE. platystigmatosum, which do not closely resemble the species in which it had earlier been detected. The BB arrangement is shown to occur in all North American species of theE. palustre group, includingE. oregonense. Direct evidence on chromosome arrangement is now available for some 85 of the approximately 185 species of the section, and may be inferred for at least 25 more.  相似文献
